JUNIOR TOUR MEMBER HIGHLIGHTS

Congratulations to Junior Tour member Griffin Haas for Back To Back Hole in One’s!

The 2017-2018 Philadelphia Junior Tour season came to an end on Monday August 20 at Old York Road Country Club as 52 juniors teed it up in the Junior Tour Championship. The William Gordon design proved to be a fair test of golf, playing at 6,366 yards for the boys and 5,502 for the girls. These 52 juniors were considered to be the top players of the year by qualifying for this event. In order to do so, juniors either had to win a tournament or finish in the top 25 in The Graham Company Player of the Year Points the boys/girls 13-18 division. The Graham Company Player of the Year races would come to end as well as the Sam Penecale Scoring Average Leaders. Finnian McGarry (Haddonfield, NJ) won the Boys 16-18 Division with a round of 77 (+6). McGarry picked up two birdies during his round, one on each side. Win Thomas (Unionville, PA) claimed both the Boys 13-15 Division and the Overall Boys 13-18 title with a round of 77 (+6). Thomas took the top spot in a three-person playoff, winning on the second hole of sudden death. James Dalzell (Linwood, NJ) was the second-place finisher in the division, also with a round of 77 (+6). JUNIOR TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

PHILADELPHIA JUNIOR TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP

2018 Philadelphia Junior Tour Championship

What’s it all about? There will no longer be any restrictions when a ball is in a “penalty” area. A player will be allowed to touch or move loose impediments and touch the ground with a hand or club in a “penalty” area (such as grounding the club right behind the ball) for any reason, subject only to the prohibition on improving conditions for the stroke (see new Rule 8.1a). Why Change? The USGA found that the ruling was never practical, so a series of exceptions were created for rules 13-4, 12-1, and various decisions. The current prohibitions have led to penalties that some view as overly harsh, such as:  Where the breach was so inconsequential that the player could not have gained any advantage or where even a careful player could not have avoided the penalty, and  In a televised competition, where the breach could not be detected by the player or others on the course and was discovered only through later video review. Rule 17 In Action: On August 15th 2010 Dustin Johnson hit his drive right on the 72nd hole of the 2015 PGA Championship and the ball was resting in a sanded area. When Dustin approached his ball he lined up and grounded his club. At Whistling Straights every “sanded area” is considered a bunker or penalty area, and even though it looked like a trampled mud patch it is still a one stroke penalty for grounding your club in a penalty area. Because of this , Dustin Johnson was pulled from the playoff. Here the player did not gain any advantage and it was detected after the fact by video review. Is it fair that Dustin Johnson was penalized? Why is this change Important? For Dustin Johnson to lose the opportunity to possibly win the PGA Championship for grounding his club in an area that was difficult to define as a bunker, is a little unpractical. This was a huge reason for the change, the USGA understood that over the past decade multiple rule changes made the game significantly more complex. This increased the difficulty of spreading the game to other demographics that were not as prominent at the time. This is one change , of many, that will create a better experience for new players and hopefully grow the game even more.
