Know the Rules: 18.2 Ball Lost or Out of Bounds

Know the Rules: 18.2 Ball Lost or Out of Bounds: Stroke and Distance Relief Must be Taken What’s it all about? Rule 18.2 explains how to determine when your ball is lost or out of bounds. The rule also explains how to proceed with stroke and distance relief after that determination.

Rule 18.2a When Ball Is Lost or Out of Bounds: A ball is determined to be lost if it is not found within three minutes after the player begins to search for it. A ball at rest is determined to be out of bounds if the entire ball is outside the boundary edge of the course. This determination is shown in the figure below. When using a painted white line as the boundary edge, the ball must be completely on or over the white line to be considered out of bounds. When using stakes as the boundary edge, the ball must be completely past the inside edge of the stakes. A ball is in bounds when any part of the ball: 1. Lies on or touches the ground or anything else (such as any natural or artificial object) inside the boundary edge, or 2. is above the boundary edge or any other part of the course. A player may stand out of bounds to play a ball on the course.

Rule 18.2b What to Do When Ball Is Lost or Out of Bounds: If a ball is lost or out of bounds, the player must take stroke-and-distance relief by adding one penalty stroke and playing their ball from where the previous stroke was made.

Rule 5.6 In Action: Alex hit his tee shot down the left side of the hole where white out of bounds stakes are located. His ball was sitting very close to the boundary line, but after a rules official tied string stake to stake it was determined that his ball is completely outside the inside boundary edge. Alex did not hit a provisional ball, so his only option is to go back to where he previously hit and take a one stroke penalty.

Why is Rule 5.6 is Important? This rule is important to understand because there are penalties for playing a ball from the wrong place. If a player has a lost ball or a ball out of bounds and they do not take stroke-and-distance relief there is a General Penalty under Rule 14.7: Playing from Wrong Place. This rule is also important in understanding that after a three minute search, a ball in considered lost and when a ball is determined to be out of bounds.
