We have all heard the mantra, “Tee it Forward”. This phrase is more than likely associated with the beginning golfer, and therefore, the experienced player never thinks of how this simple idea can improve their game. Collegiate teams and seasoned teachers have been utilizing the forward tees to improve the game of their students, many of whom are top players in the country. Using the forward tees when practicing at your home course can not only mentally prepare a player to “go low”, but it can also provide a fresh, fun look to a golf course that may be routine at this point. How many of you reading this barely even look at the yardage markers on your home course anymore? A course that has five sets of tees has five different course options, why not utilize them all?
The saying “golf is 90% mental, and the other 10% is mental” is not false. A player’s mental approach to golf is often the defining characteristic of their overall game. Lower your scores by improving your mental game, it’s as simple as that. By playing the forward tees every hole will offer the chance at a birdie. You can say goodbye to playing defensively, as a more aggressive approach will slowly creep into your game. Top 100 teacher, Mitchell Spearman, is an advocate for this style of practice and feels that it can drastically improve scores. When describing this practice routine, Spearman said that it will help to “motivate you and increase your confidence…”, and isn’t this is what we’re all looking to achieve.
