歲月的佳釀 秋天的旭日升起,陽光如鳥兒的翅膀,優雅地拂過葡萄園的枝枝 蔓蔓。晨間,小溪上的霧氣升騰起來再散開,葡萄園中出現了釀 酒人的影子。他嗅著空氣中發酵的微醺氣息,彷彿看到了園中一 顆顆圓潤的小葡萄,化作醇香的美酒,滋潤著品酒人的脾胃。 本期《時尚精英》,帶您走進法國南方夏朗德省——干邑白蘭地 的故鄉。這裡有一個百年製酒人家「 卡慕 」,其第五代傳人,傳 承家族工藝傳統,釀造出別出心裁的新風味。 正如葡萄歷經歲月中的風霜雨雪,終成人間佳釀。在美麗的台 灣,有一位電影人,闖過最凜冽的「 資本寒冬 」,「 釀就 」熱血 而真摯的精釆電影。他就是創造台灣票房神話的電影導演魏德 聖。他瘦削的身軀裡,似乎藏著一股特別的力量,每每助力他 披荊斬棘。本期人物故事,帶您一起走進這位追夢導演的內心世 界,一探究竟。 從美麗的台灣來到美國,平面設計師李明軒留學異鄉,畢業之 後,幾番折騰,卻總也拿不到留美的工作簽證。困境之中,她只 能不斷地找工作、換工作、加倍努力工作。回憶起來,她一字一 頓地說「 很辛苦,很辛苦,很辛苦 」。多份工作之後,她終究也 沒有拿到工作簽證。然而,峰迴路轉,命運給她安排了另外一份 特別的「 美國通行證 」。 從法國到台灣,從台灣到北美,生命總有「 化腐朽為神奇 」的際 遇。李寶滿從小隨父母移居到加拿大生活。作為海外華人,他原 本覺得中國的傳統文化距離自己很遠,然而命運卻賦予他一條恢 宏又有意義的尋根之旅。 緣分是一條看不見的線,歲月是一壺未知的佳釀。一思一念、一 言一行,都可能是敲響生命奇蹟的契機。 謹以本期精英人物的故事,致敬每一個勇敢的追夢人。

or most of us, it takes years to find our path. However, designer Ming-Hsuan Lee had always known that art would be hers. While many artists have a “signature” style, Ming-Hsuan is a Jill of all trades. She is always trying new techniques, changing up her style every few months. Just like her style is constantly evolving, her journey has been full of unexpected twists and tribulations, spanning all the way from Taipei to the Big Apple. Ming-Hsuan has a special relationship with New York—a bond that goes back many years. She first fell in love with the city at 18, when she and three friends visited to celebrate their high school graduation. Inspired by the city’s energy and vibrancy, she vowed to return. “It was that trip that motivated me to come here and study design,” Ming-Hsuan reminisced. Upon graduating from the National Taiwan University of Art, she came to the Pratt Institute to pursue a master’s degree in communications design. PERSISTING THROUGH HARDSHIPS After graduating from Pratt in 2015, Ming-Hsuan was determined to stay in New York. This proved to be a challenge. Not only did she have to overcome the language barrier, but she also faced a bigger hurdle—getting a worker visa. With the number of international students increasing every year, as the number of H-1B visas awarded dwindled, her chances looked slim. Ming-Hsuan had one year after graduating to secure a job at a company that would sponsor her visa before she would have to return to Taiwan. In just that first year, she went through four job changes. “I wanted to get in a company and prove that I had talent and skills, before asking them to sponsor my visa,” she explained. Ming-Hsuan’s fifth job was a turning point in her career. The company, called Imagemme, was relatively small; as a result, she was its only graphic designer. This meant that she had to handle all aspects of projects—from concept creation, to execution, to creating the print-ready production files.
Ming-Hsuan Lee is a multidisciplinary designer and illustrator living in New York City.

Though the experience was difficult, it paid off immensely. Ming-Hsuan’s time at Imagemme helped her grow as an artist and become more independent. Most importantly, with all the projects she added to her portfolio while working there, she was able to find an alternative solution to her visa dilemma. Instead of the H-1B, she successfully applied for an artist visa in 2017. This meant that she no longer needed a company to sponsor her, and she was free to stay in the city of her dreams.

Many times, the companies have complicated concepts that are difficult for the general public to understand. Therefore, it’s Ming-Hsuan’s responsibility to simplify the concept and convey it in an efficient and engaging manner. Ming-Hsuan faced this struggle in a recent project for Arianee, a company that uses blockchain technology to help users authenticate luxury products. The company reached out to Ming-Hsuan, asking for two videos explaining Arianee’s mission and the technology behind it. Ming-Hsuan had to read the script several times before she could even grasp the concept. Nevertheless, she rose to the challenge, creating a pair of videos that are elegant and easy to understand. Part of what makes Ming-Hsuan’s designs so successful is her dedication to research, a skill she honed during the year she spent as an exchange student at Kobe Design University in Japan. “Japanese designers really emphasize doing research,” Ming-Hsuan said. “What I learned the most from my time in Japan was to actually think about the problem I aim to solve before starting my design.” This often means learning about the brand’s history, interviewing target audiences, and studying the methods of competitors. Doing research was especially important when Ming-Hsuan was creating her award-winning pieces for the Domestic Slave Trade Narrative exhibition at The Legacy Museum. Being non-native to America, she wasn’t very familiar with the country’s history of

slavery. Additionally, it was hard to find pictures or videos to use for reference. Ming-Hsuan’s goal was to represent the events as realistically as possible. Therefore, she watched numerous movies that took place during the time period to find inspiration. She drew everything using charcoal, giving the pieces a dark and solemn ambiance. “I wanted to remind people about the sadness of this part of history,” she explained.

DOING WHAT SHE LOVES In her free time, Ming-Hsuan enjoys rock climbing, bouldering, and photography. However, her hobbies always come back to creating art. She is currently working on a typography series about female climbers, in which every letter of the alphabet represents a different climbing technique. She has another typography series that showcases her love for New York City, which she has compiled into a book. “This book is a good way for people to see the city from a designer’s point of view,” she said. When asked about her favorite part of living in New York City, Ming-Hsuan smiled blissfully. “There are too many,” she said. “I love that you can find inspiration from people from all over the world here.”

ith a pristine smile, Wei Te-Sheng walks into sight; though he is perhaps not always the most noticeable, he constantly radiates charisma. Just as his movies have touched the hearts of millions, his own journey is equally as inspiring—from the son of clockmakers in Tainan to one of Taiwan’s most influential film directors. Wei has directed two of Taiwan’s highest-grossing domestic films: Cape No. 7 and Seediq Bale. Over the years, he has poured his heart and soul into every production he leads, even if it means bringing himself to the brink of bankruptcy. In the face of every imaginable adversity, he has persevered as “it is a natural instinct,” he told Elite Lifestyle Magazine during an interview in New York. Like him, Wei’s movies are passionate and sincere, sensational yet down-to-earth. Cape No. 7 captures the stories of ordinary people chasing their everyday dreams. This romantic musical drama was Wei’s first full-length motion picture, and it has become one of Taiwan’s most acclaimed movies. With Seediq Bale, Wei brought to light the often neglected tales of Taiwan’s indigenous people. A NEW PERSPECTIVE Wei has written the screenplays for his films himself, including Seediq Bale. “Seediq Bale was an extremely crucial start; it established the way I view history and its values,” he said. Based on the actual events of the Wushe Incident, the movie recounts the conflict between Taiwanese aboriginals and Japanese soldiers during the Japanese colonial period. Wei strove to capture the tragic incident as accurately and realistically as possible. He spent nearly two years conducting research, delving into primary sources until he held a vivid grasp of every detail. It was during these two years that Wei came to the realization that “in history, it is important to understand the motives of the people involved, because everyone fights for their meaning of life, and the legacy of their souls.” Wei decided to make this newfound perspective the theme of Seediq Bale.

“As the Rainbow-believers (aboriginals) encounter the Sun-worshippers (Japanese soldiers) in the Taiwanese mountains, they fight and bleed, dying to protect their different faiths—somehow forgetting to embrace the same sky,” he said. From this perspective, Wei showed audiences that the figures involved in the Wushe Incident were only seeking dignity and freedom. Another one of Wei’s works, Kano, chronicles the journey of a high school baseball team and takes place in Japanese Taiwan. The team was a mix of Taiwanese natives, Han-ethnic Taiwanese, and Japanese players. In 1931, Team Kano won Silver at the Japanese National High School Tournament. “A lesser-known team, comprised of three different ethnic groups, ended up achieving such an honor,” Wei said. In Kano, the collaboration between different ethnicities resulted in friendship; whereas, in Seediq Bale, anger and hatred led to a tragic ethnic conflict—the Wushe Incident. With these two stories, Wei encourages audiences to view history in a more compassionate and reflective light.

A FEARLESS HEART Just like with any dream, Wei’s first attempts were not always met with victories. In 2003, he personally raised the funds for Seediq Bale’s trailer—however, this wasn’t nearly enough. Thus, the movie was put in a six-year-long hiatus. It was one of the hardest times of his life. Wei said that he felt lost and weary, as if stuck in a dark tunnel with no light in sight. Feeling uninspired, Wei decided to focus on Cape No. 7. He hoped that if the film was successful, he would have better luck financing Seediq Bale. Wei gave Cape No. 7 his all, leaving no room for regrets. He even went so far as to mortgage his house to pay for the expenses. His hard work and dedication paid off. Although the movie attracted only moderate box-office success in its first few weeks, it spread quickly by word of mouth and eventually reached record-breaking success. Wei had finally earned recognition, and he was able to fulfill his dream of bringing Seediq Bale to life. However, the Taiwanese movie industry in 2009 was far from Wei’s expectations. Nevertheless, and despite having limited resources, he managed to pull in expert scene designers from Japan, computer

artists from Korea, as well as the “influencer of the action genre,” John Woo from Hong Kong. Yet even with everything prepared to Hollywood standard, the filming process for Seediq Bale encountered many roadblocks. Expenses piled on quickly, and anticipation and excitement soon turned into doubts and criticism. Nothing was going as Wei had planned; even his most trusted partner eventually left the team. However, Wei was ready to fight the battles, even if he had to do it alone. THE TAIWAN DREAM Wei worked tirelessly, running between his studio and various companies to try and find new sources of support. Eventually, his hard work came to fruition. He was fortunate to receive just enough funding for Seediq Bale to hit the big screen in 2011. Thinking back on the experience, he expressed gratitude. “I was so lucky to have been able to accomplish all that I’ve dreamed of without a single penny,” he said. As soon as Seediq Bale was released, it achieved overwhelming popularity, breaking the box-office
record in Taiwan. As the result of its success, Wei began receiving invitations to work on productions all around the world. However, “that is not where my ambition lies,” Wei explained. “My spirit and dreams remain within Taiwan.” For many, especially in the entertainment industry, happiness stems from fame and wealth. However, for Wei, happiness comes from having something to pursue. He is also looking forward to future projects and coming up with new ideas. Just last year, he began the production of Taiwan Trilogy, which dates back 400 years to the era of colonial Dutch-Taiwan and chronicles the growth of his homeland. As with all of his productions, Wei doesn’t hold back—the intricacy and large scale of Taiwan Trilogy will make it his most expensive production yet. Many have doubted the success of this project, and Wei has already faced many hardships regarding it. Nevertheless, he has persisted—Wei has never been one to back down from a challenge. As impossible as it might seem, the heavens will help those who are splendid. │51

e’re changing the art world,” claims the New Masters Academy website. I wanted to understand exactly how and why the internet’s subscription-based art education website is making this ambitious assertion. I had an opportunity to tour the impressive film and sculpture studio facilities in Huntington Beach, California, where the art demonstrations are filmed and edited, and to meet the company’s founder, Joshua Jacobo, in his home, where I learned more about the mastermind behind New Masters Academy (NMA). His home, which he shares with his wife, Austrian sculptor Johanna Schwaiger, has shelves lined with a notable collection of art books that rivals the library at my prestigious East Coast art school. But then again, that’s at the core of what Jacobo and NMA are doing: challenging the present art school paradigm. WHAT NEW MASTERS ACADEMY AIMS TO DO NMA is challenging the paradigm in both form and content. “Our goal is to offer the world’s most affordable, most comprehensive art education and to get it in the hands of anyone who wants to learn the craft of drawing, painting, or sculpture,” Jacobo said in a follow-up email interview. He wants “to empower artists from many different backgrounds with many different stories to tell with a solid education of art fundamentals as well as a historical context for how these crafts have evolved.” Learning art history is important. Just as scientists “stand on the shoulders of giants” who preceded them, artists should learn from the art and masters of the past, he believes, in order to move beyond the artistic nihilism and obscurantism of our day. In this way, we can move art forward. By returning to the “humility and discipline of our craft, we can create the almost magic and sacred experience in the minds of our viewers once again,” he said.

JOSHUA JACOBO’S EARLY YEARS Though his childhood was filled with the wonder of creativity, Jacobo took many years to come to this craft, career, and mission. It happened in a circuitous manner, befitting a hero’s journey. “My mother taught my brother and me how to draw at an early age. She would decorate our rooms with murals of dinosaurs, jungles, circuses, or whatever our │53

particular fascination was at the time. She showed us how drawing could be used to connect our imaginations with the real world,” he explained. But life took a sharp and traumatic detour when, at 20, while studying at a Los Angeles university, Jacobo learned that his mother and stepfather had been killed in an auto accident. This catapulted his life in unexpected ways. Within mere weeks of the accident, Jacobo started working to pay rent and legal bills. He put any and all of his skills toward earning money and gathering skills and experience that would later prove invaluable to his future endeavors: He worked as a designer, copywriter, salesperson, software developer, videographer, photographer, and anything else he could, to try to make ends meet. After almost a decade of living a responsible adult life, and with the attainment of some financial security and a range of professional experience, his feeling of panic and survival started to dissipate. But the call to create—to engage in the mysterious activity of observing, extracting, and recording the relationship between truth and beauty—did not abate. He began to draw again, only part-time at first. But as he regained stability and financial security, Jacobo felt that, if he was serious about pursuing art for a lifetime, it was time to study it full-time. “I had fantasies about creating masterpieces that rivaled those of the old masters. I felt I had aptitude and talent and only needed the right training,” he said. The search to learn how to paint and draw like the master draftsmen of the Renaissance, however, proved more difficult than he imagined. Jacobo’s quest became the impetus that set him on his path.

THE SEARCH FOR AN ART SCHOOL “While I was aware that the skill of artists today paled in comparison to the great masters of the past, I assumed that serious artistic training still existed in the world,” Jacobo said. He was willing to move to wherever a school could be found and pay whatever was needed. Jacobo spent a year researching university art programs, specialty schools, and ateliers around the world to find the perfect fit. He was shocked, however, to discover that most of the fundamentals of the craft of drawing, painting, and sculpture were no longer being taught.

“Something had happened to art training, and art itself, and I struggled to piece together the enormity of this disaster,” said Jacobo, contextualizing the state of art within the frame of Western history. He learned that the 20th century had seen a radical shift in culture, so dramatically altering the visual arts that figure painting was proclaimed dead, painting irrelevant in some countries, and the craft aspect of it had become separated from the “effable notion of ‘art.’” Traditional art was replaced by the “highly subjective, infinitely inscrutable, and quite lucrative for a select few,” he said. He hadn’t realized that art had been “liberated” from “the authoritarian, nationalistic, bourgeois, power structures that had apparently so oppressed it.” “The newly liberated artists … dispensed with restrictions like drawing fundamentals, humility, and a collective sense of artistic tradition in favor of individual expression, originality of style, and above all, the edgy concept. Beauty had become kitsch, and mastery of craft irrelevant.” So rather than enrolling in a deficient or misguided art program, Jacobo decided to teach himself, laying out a self-imposed training regimen of copying masters, studying anatomy, and drawing from the imagination, practices he continues daily and that he thinks are vital. He purchased a four-volume set of beautiful reproductions of the corpus of Michelangelo’s drawings from the master’s home, now a museum called Casa Buonorotti, in Florence, and began the exercises given to

apprentices for hundreds of years: painstakingly copying hundreds of the master’s works. FINDING A TEACHER AND A MISSION Recently, there is a revival of academic representational art being taught in ateliers in the United States and Europe. Of these few artists that Jacobo found who were versed in the craft of drawing and painting, one stood out to him—Glenn Vilppu. “Learning about Glenn from another artist, I was astounded when I first saw his drawings. Here was a living person who could really draw like the old masters.” Vilppu, then in his 70s, was a drawing teacher who had studied with some of the best draftspeople of this generation and had taught for nearly 50 years in schools, and later worked in the animation industry. He traveled the world giving workshops and selling a wide variety of self-published books and videos on his technique: an approach to drawing with an emphasis on gesture—the visual movement that ties together nature, design, and inventiveness. “I had no choice but to hunt him down and demand that he teach me, perhaps having watched too many kung fu movies as a kid,” Jacobo joked. But it worked, and what transpired became a mutually beneficial relationship, both professionally and personally. It would also become the genesis of the New Masters Academy. With real-world professional and technical experience, Jacobo offered to help Vilppu’s art business in exchange for the opportunity to study with Vilppu one-on-one. Jacobo suggested that Vilppu take his business online to reach the maximum number of art students around the world, as both agreed that what was needed was a return to traditional foundational training. As a result, the new, small, online school called the Vilppu Academy transformed Vilppu’s business, “winning awards and getting great buzz from the art community.” With this success and the desire to reach more people, Jacobo thought: “What if there was an online art school that functioned like a modern subscription site such as Netflix. Instead of one master artist, what if there were dozens, each providing expert training on a range of art subjects from anatomy, perspective, painting technique, creature design, the portrait, and, of course, the figure?”
At first, the content was recorded in the garage of Jacobo’s Newport Coast home, but eventually they rented a studio space in Huntington Beach. The website went live in March of 2013 with about 100 hours of content in the library, with thousands of beautiful reference images of art models in portraits and dynamic poses. They developed the world’s first 3D-art reference viewer. It allows artists to study scans of people and of master sculptures as well as references to anatomy. Artists can then transfer the real measurements from the web app to their own work. The comprehensive resources offered on the website are nothing short of remarkable. Since 2013, the website has grown to include over 1,000 hours of content from over 20 instructors, including Juliette Aristides, John Asaro, Mark Westermoe, David Simon, Johanna Schwaiger, and Rey Bustos. It turns out that there were many others around the world who, like Jacobo, were dissatisfied with the educational options available. Over a million people follow their network, and tens of thousands around the globe study with their program. “We started seeing the influence of our instruction early on. The quality of work being produced and shared online on art forums, Facebook, or Instagram was improving, and many artists were crediting us with their changes of understanding and thinking, some of them quite influential and well-subscribed,” he said. Universities, film and game studios, and other professionals contacted NMA, and soon the website was being used to train artists at Disney Animation Studios and art departments globally. “My decision to pursue my love for art as a full-time career was the best one I ever made,” Jacobo said. “I am healthier, happier, and I have found the woman of my dreams in my wife, all as a result of taking the plunge and betting on the risky world of art and art education,” he said. LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE This year, NMA will add the world’s most comprehensive landscape painting courses to its website, and many international artists from China, Russia, and Europe have been invited to film their traditional cultural arts—from Tyrolean wood carving to traditional Chinese ink painting.

Also underway are an artist store, an art news section called “Canvas,” and an original program for children (think Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood meets Bob Ross) that teaches art fundamentals as well as life lessons and values, such as the power of creativity and how to find beauty in the world around us. “What I love most about art is its ability to connect us with our intrinsic nobility and love for each other and for nature,” Jacobo said. “I love how great art can inspire, challenge, and comfort us. I believe art can elevate us, that it is anything but useless. In some respects, our artistic creations represent the best of our natures.” “We can make our society better, and despite new challenges and crushing setbacks, I think that we are succeeding,” he said. So it seems that New Masters Academy is changing the art world, one brush stroke at a time.

hen Victor Li’s parents suggested that he follow his gregarious older brother’s footsteps and audition for an elite dance school in upstate New York, he agreed to give it a try, and by a fortunate stroke of serendipity, he passed the audition. Upon entering the prestigious dance school, challenges began to materialize. “It was very tiring and painful,” Victor recalled of his early training. Nevertheless, despite the pain and hardships, something inside of him propelled him to keep going. Li is now a principal dancer at Shen Yun Performing Arts, the world’s top classical Chinese dance company. Li is outgoing and confident, driven by a keen sense of purpose to share his passion for Chinese culture with audiences around the world.

Although his career has taken him to perform on stages across continents, being a classical Chinese dancer is equally—if not more—about the inward journey.

FROM IMITATION TO INNER FEELING The movements of classical Chinese dance were developed throughout different Chinese dynasties, and they reflect the unique culture of different eras. The fullest expression of the dance is achieved when meaning motivates the gestures, and they arise from a dancer’s inner feeling. Li said that it has taken him years to develop “inner feelings” for dance. When he started, he said, he would just copy what he saw older dancers doing. It took years of practice, but slowly and surely, he began developing a sense for the meaning behind the movements. It is also the case that a dancer’s personality informs the movements, and not everyone can play all roles. In the 2012 NTD International Classical Chinese Dance Competition, he chose the role of a king from China’s late Spring and Autumn Period, and he didn’t place in the competition. Afterward, in history class, Li learned that the king had a vengeful side that didn’t suit his personality. For later competitions, he chose scholarly characters or themes, even though he thought it would be fun to dance the role of a general. It was only last year that he felt ready to take on a more martial figure. He chose a scholar who “laid down the pen to take up the sword” because he felt a duty and love for his country. Duty has also been a theme in Li’s life for the past several years. In 2016, he became a principal dancer and simultaneously took on the role of supporting newer dancers. He takes this responsibility seriously, and always goes the extra mile. He recalled how as a young dancer, he watched and learned from older ones—not only to observe their dance moves but also to see how they acted offstage. So, he does his best to set a good example, joining his troupe for extra practice in the mornings and staying with them late into the evenings to be sure that everyone has mastered the day’s lesson. This kind of commitment and determination is a

key part of the mindset of a successful artist. In traditional Chinese culture, it was held that an artist’s state of mind to a great extent determined the quality of their art. Sincere optimism is also an important part of this mindset. Being an artist is a path riddled with difficulty and challenges; in order to succeed, Li has come to view setbacks and mistakes as opportunities to strengthen himself. He has also found that it is important to let go of negativity, because no matter how well-justified it feels, it is counterproductive to his art. “[They’re] for me to improve,” he said of situations that upset him. Being able to mentally overcome difficult situations has allowed him to appreciate the struggle and sacrifice of people in the past, and has helped him understand the inner feelings of classical Chinese dance.

FAMILY CIRCLE Had he been able to grow up near his extended family, a younger Li might have been inspired to become an artist as a young child. In China, where he was born, his mother and several of his aunts and uncles were professional performers. However, because of their spiritual beliefs, his parents were forced to f lee China when Li was a baby. After years as refugees, they were allowed to come to Canada in 2001. Growing up in Canada, Li had little connection to his culture and roots. He said that he didn’t at all “feel Chinese.” However, distance did not change his destiny to dance, and Shen Yun’s mission to revive China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture is important and personal to Victor’s family. For millennia, Chinese people felt that their culture was given to them by gods, and reverence for the spiritual was a belief carried through all of China’s dynasties. By contrast, when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) came to power, it tried to make atheism the foundation for society, carrying out numerous campaigns aimed at suppressing spiritual beliefs. In 1999, it banned the practice of Falun Gong, the spiritual practice of Li’s parents. The core of the practice are the principles of truth, compassion, and tolerance, and adherents are encouraged to work on themselves so that their conduct in daily life aligns with these principles. Li and his family practice Falun Gong, and his mother and younger sister have also performed with Shen Yun. His mother said she was glad for him to dance with the company because she felt that it would be a healthy environment for him to learn and grow, and that it would allow him to do great good for society. “Shen Yun portrays traditional, pure, and beautiful Chinese culture, which was all lost or deviated under the CCP's ruling in China.” Li said. Becoming a dancer with Shen Yun has given Li a connection to his true heritage, and a respect for people of the past: “From history, you can learn from what has happened to the people before, what's good and what's bad, what's right, what's wrong. ... There are so many stories you can look back at and solve your problem or situation better,” he said.
修己修身 遇見更好的自己 來到美國學習舞蹈之後,宿舍生活和周圍積極的環境, 讓原本內向寡言的李寶滿,變得開朗起來,「 現在見到 老師和同學,我都會打招呼,原來的我不是這樣。」同 時,中國古典舞作為一門舞臺藝術,需要演員向觀眾傳 達自己的精神世界。經常登台演出中,寶滿逐漸放開了 自己,更樂於和人們溝通交流,性格變得開朗大氣。 「 從前,我只是一個每日遊玩、沒有積極人生目標 的小孩。」歷經十年的正統中國古典舞訓練和中國文化傳 統的洗禮,寶滿感慨, 「 舞蹈讓我遇到了更好的自己 」。 神韻藝術團的演出劇目以群舞居多。談到這一過 程,李寶滿覺得樂在其中:「 大家在舞台上一起將一個 宏大的圖景表現出來。那種配合默契、融為一體的感覺 很棒。對於演員而言,群舞當然比獨舞更難。因為如果 集體中一個人出了錯,每個人都要想一想自己有什麼責 任。雖然很難,但是我覺得這一過程很值得回味。」 舞台演出也讓寶滿遇到了更多「不一樣的自己」。他 舉例說,「我可以體驗多種人生。如果我演唐僧的角色, 他那種超脫世外的境界,會讓我有種俯仰蒼生的感覺。」 守望傳統 兌現命運的誓言 每年,寶滿和同團夥伴們都會隨神韻巡迴演出,一年幾 百場。過程中,他也更進一步認識自己的舞蹈之路, 「弘 揚中國的傳統文化,廣傳真相,是一件非常有意義的事 情。越深入了解中國傳統文化,我就越對我在做的事情 感興趣。」 談及神韻藝術團的使命,李寶滿的嗓音稍顯嚴肅起 來:「 在現代社會中,人們都在追逐著新鮮的事物,渴 望變化與刺激。可是,有時我們應該回頭看一看歷史, 因為以史為鑑,善與惡,對與錯,歷史會給出很多問題 的答案。應該讓人們知道,歷史與我們的傳統文化,對 於此時今日依舊意義重大。新事物也許不錯,但是回顧 歷史,會發現類似的事情已經發生過。五千年的歷史長 河中,有著無數動人的故事,有太多值得今人借鑒的地 方。很多西方人可能不了解中國傳統文化的博大精深, 只看到共產主義統治的現代中國,其實已與古時的中國 相去甚遠。所以弘揚中國傳統文化、揭露迫害,就是神 韻的使命。」 回望自己一路走來的舞蹈之路,寶滿心懷感恩,他 說:「 因為命運的眷顧,我出生在一個藝術之家,家人 大多都是藝術家,最後自己也成為一名藝術家。 生活 不易,舞蹈這條路異常艱辛。但是能夠來到飛天學習舞 蹈,成為神韻藝術團的一員,是命運對我最大的眷顧。 因為家人和朋友們的幫助,一步一步,我走到了今天。 神韻讓我認識到了真正的自己,也讓我明白,自己注定 是成就神韻恢宏使命的一員。『 努力兌現自己的命運之 約 』,是鼓舞我不斷向前的動力,幫助我一次次從低谷 站起來,奮力向上。」 │63

In classical Chinese dance, there is a principle that in order to go a certain way, you must first go the opposite direction. Not only is this aesthetically pleasing, but it also has an inner meaning that arises from the understanding in Chinese philosophy that the energies of yin and yang (dark and light) must be kept in balance. Li and his family had to go West to find the true essence of the East. In order to succeed, they first went through great hardship—but like his ancestors, Li believes that the hands of destiny were guiding them all throughout. “I believe in predestination and consider myself blessed to have been born into a family of artists and

ocated in Bridgehampton, New York, this 6,500-square-foot home was built in the classic Hampton style of the late 1990s. The spacious abode contains seven bedrooms, seven and a half bathrooms, a large pool, and a separate garage with living quarters. Situated on 1.5 leafy acres of land, it was the perfect find for a New York-based couple looking for a relaxing getaway for themselves and their three young children. The couple sought out Timothy Godbold, an Australian-born interior designer and former senior designer for Ralph Lauren. As Godbold saw, “this home had beautiful old trims, and came with a lot of character.” Keeping with the philosophy of a traditional Hamptons home, he modernized the house with a Swedish aesthetic. As an avid appreciator of Swedish design, Godbold often travels to Sweden, where he sources many of his furnishings. In the home’s front room, the wallmounted sofa designed by Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen and Torben Lind was purchased by Godbold in Stockholm. Additionally, the floating wooden console was

To ensure that the whole house f lows gracefully, Godbold applied a neutral scheme, full of natural woods, stone, tile, metal, and black and white hues. His team stripped the dark floors to a natural pine, a meticulous process that took over 30 different finishes. Any overly fussy details were removed, giving the home a clean and minimalistic look. grandeur and sophistication, yet remains simple and comfortable. It contains Verellen Linen sectional sofas, an armchair by Michael Dawkins Home, and a MARCH dome light fixture. A pair of gold sconces from Stahl + Band flank the fireplace, standing out strikingly against the white wall. Full of soothing hues of white and natural woods, the master bedroom is the ultimate tranquil haven to unwind in. A pair of Guillerme et Chambron chairs from the 1950s border the fireplace, and a soft B&B Italia bed sits atop the knitted, cream-colored rug from Restoration Hardware. The kitchen features Belgian bluestone f looring and Absolute Black granite countertops, suited to withstand the wear and tear that comes with a family of five. A cozy sitting area is the perfect place for casual meals and gatherings. The room was designed with a focus on function and flow, as the clients needed a space where they could prepare meals while their kids hung out nearby. The open floor plan seamlessly connects the kitchen with the family room. In the family room, large, expansive windows provide a plethora of natural light, creating a warm and welcoming ambiance. Additionally, the A-frame ceiling with an exposed wooden beam lends itself to a cozy, laid-back vibe. “Overall, I wanted the home to have a casual and relaxed atmosphere, with a few elevated elements,” Godbold explained. “Modern, clean, and approachable, but still simplistic, with a Hamptons beachstyle vibe.” The game room, the bar, and comfy sofas scattered throughout the home were all intended to keep the emphasis on togetherness, relaxation, and fun. “Everything we did was created with the family in mind,'' Godbold said. The library is one of Godbold’s favorite rooms in the house. White shearling Maralunga chairs add warmth to the serene sanctuary, and contrast starkly with the moody black walls. Godbold was surprised by how open the clients were to the concept of a black room. “They loved it. And they actually use it a lot! It’s become their alone-time space,” he said. The entryway’s arched console table, designed by Godbold and custom-made, was inspired by the Square Colosseum in Rome. Godbold wanted to bring a sculptural element into the foyer, but as the room is not very big, he needed something that was also functional.
The unique wall sconces above the console table are from Allied Maker and were, in fact, discovered by the client. Throughout the entire design process, there was a profuse flow of ideas and resources between Godbold and the client. “She taught me to always read the reviews on products; it was truly a mutually beneficial collaboration,” Godbold recalled. Godbold described the home as “a hybrid of Swedish clean lines and American comfort.” By blending elements from various eras and different cultures, he created a graceful sanctuary that transcends trends and withstands the test of time.

ituated in Russian Hill, one of San Francisco’s most affluent neighborhoods, is a magnificent, 4,127-square-foot Victorian mansion. This architecturally significant home was originally built in 1866, and in 1916, it was transformed into classic Italianate style by esteemed California architect Julia Morgan. A couple with three children recently purchased this landmark home, with hopes of modernizing the historic site while retaining its original essence. They reached out to NICOLEHOLLIS, an award-winning, San Francisco-based interior design practice, to bring their vision to life. Before beginning renovations, the NICOLEHOLLIS team took time to separate the elements of the home that are truly timeless from the areas that needed to be contemporized. installed with current-day amenities with respect to Morgan’s intricate craftsmanship. The team thoroughly studied the contrasting materials and textures applied throughout the home. Original Victorian moldings, marble fireplaces, and brass mirrors were preserved during renovations, and served as inspiration throughout the material and color palette selection process. To create a more open and functional floor plan, the wall between the kitchen and living room was removed. NICOLEHOLLIS emphasized the home’s expansive windows, filling rooms with an abundance of natural light and highlighting the striking views. The designers made sure to choose furnishings that worked in harmony with the family’s extensive art collection, which includes works by both renowned and burgeoning talents.
In the formal dining room, the NICOLEHOLLIS team custom designed the brass and black oak dining table, which they paired with wishbone chairs by Hans Wegner. The polished brass bar cabinet was also custom-made, and stands next to the stunning marble fireplace. A unique Bec Brittain light fixture, along with artwork by contemporary artist Christopher Badger, adds a modern touch. The second floor of the house initially came with a ballroom, which NICOLEHOLLIS transformed into the master bedroom. The designers decided to keep the room’s original herringbone flooring, Victorian moldings, marble fireplace, and rococo mirror. To fix the lack of closet space, they installed a mirror polished-brass wardrobe on each side of the room. To suit the needs of a family of five, many custom fixtures were added. For example, the two youngest

children needed space to store their toys. To solve this problem, NICOLEHOLLIS added storage space beneath the stairs leading from the main level to the lower floor, which had been turned into a play area and media room. Additionally, as the clients enjoy ice climbing and motorcycling, NICOLEHOLLIS added a gear room with custom shelves to hold equipment. A f ter a three-year-long remodeling process, NICOLEHOLLIS immaculately transformed the interior of this historic residence into an open, kid-friendly home complete with a new kitchen, three bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a gear room. This was all done with a deep reverence for the home’s history, as well as the preservation of the mansion’s myriad original details.

an and land. The land is an accident of geography where there is beauty and determination. It is captivating to see the working of the land and to meet the people who gather its treasures. The land identifies its people. Man and nature shaping each other to form a nation’s history, characteristics, and destiny. No matter how much countries disagree with each other, they have one thing in common—and that is, land is life. Some take only sustenance from the earth while others take its treasures that enrich most mankind and themselves. And that is the beginning of our story. There is a famous little corner of one of the most visited countries in the world. It is located in Charente, in southwestern France, named after the Charente River. It is the source of oysters and, most importantly, the grape that produces the unmatched “eaude-vie”—the water of life, or Cognac, derived from the Charentes district of Cognac. There, you will see a landscape dotted with chalky hills and land that characterize the terrain lined with famous and ancient vineyards that, for centuries, have produced the most distinctive Cognac. No other spot in the world combines the unique climate and soil conditions that produce the Cognac grapes. These remarkable grapes produce a superlative aroma once their juice has been distilled into Cognac. Once the grapes on the vines ripen in September and early October, they are finally ready for harvesting and are pressed into juice and fermented into wine. This is the beginning of a long, complicated, and exacting process as the wine is distilled and then aged into Cognac. Cognac AOC (Appellation d’Origine Controlée), or controlled appellation of origin, is an area that totals about 79,000 hectares of vineyards (that is, 790 million square meters). The wine region of Cognac is in fact the second biggest in France, right after the wine region of Bordeaux. In the Cognac regions, there are six different growth areas: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, Fins Bois, Bons Bois, and Bois Ordinaires. Standing at the heart of it all, right in the center where Cognac originated, is the last international Cognac House that is entirely family-owned. It is the House of CAMUS, known for its very complex yet very pleasant Cognacs. These Cognacs have intense f loral and fruity aromas ref lecting the best of the

terroir. From the Borderies region come some of the most floral of all Cognacs, with unique aromas not found in other types of Cognacs made in the region. Since its inception in 1863, the House of CAMUS has the focused passion to produce Cognacs with unprecedented intense aromas like no other. From generation to generation, the vision and tradition have been passed down. Each generation strives to improve the superiority of their Cognac. Each generation tries to take one step further in that direction. It is almost like an act of faith. In a world dominated by globalization and standardization, the Camus family is staunchly independent and creates Cognacs that best reflect the rich flavors of their terroirs. Today, Cyril Camus resides at the helm of the House of CAMUS, and just like his forefathers before him, he is leaving his mark on the House by reinventing the Cognacs that bear his name. With a group of experts, Cyril invented the patented technique called “instensity,” bringing his Cognacs to new highs of aromatic intensity. CAMUS’s new fifth-generation range of Cognacs is the culmination of 15 years of innovation and development applied and supported by over 150 years of expertise and traditional know-how of the House. It is also the largest vineyard owner in the Borderies region, with Borderies wines being a major component of the family’s Cognacs. In a phone conversation with Cyril, he told me that the House of CAMUS is “meticulous in every step of the way—from the way we harvest to the distillation and aging—to really tweak every step and focus it on increasing the aromatic intensity. And we keep improving our systems to ensure this happens.” This unique method of fractional reintroduction of the heads into the eau-de-vie, differs from the standard process used by other Houses. Cyril continued to say: “It is exclusively performed by hand, whereby the first liters of ‘heads,’ which are usually discarded in traditional distillation, are systematically and carefully tasted liter by liter at CAMUS, with the most complex and aromatic of them integrated into the ‘heart’ of the distillation, to get a higher concentration of esters and a more pronounced aromatic intensity. This is a non-automated system and is done by hand, under the close supervision of the Cellar Master, Patrick Léger, only in small pot stills. At this point, ‘man’s’ work is done and the rest is left in the hands of nature to do its magical work. The eau-de-vie is now put to sleep for

aging in small, toasted, old Limousin oak barrels to help it mature and provide elegant and delicate tannins for a perfect balance between the fruity and floral aromas, thereby creating more intense, distinctive, fruity and floral aromas with just a hint of oak.” Traditionally, seven grape varieties are allowed in the production of Cognac, under the strict requirements of the French government’s minimum standards. Today, three principal grape varieties are used: Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, and Colombard. There are many Cognac producers in the region, each applying the same basic principles: Grapes must be planted and harvested in the specified AOC regions, the Cognac must be twice distilled, and
aging must take place in oak barrels. Ugni Blanc is the main grape used in Cognac, with each producer having its own unique blend and preferred size of oak cask. CAMUS, however, is unique in many ways: First it opts for a higher blend of Colombard and Folle Blanche varietals, using three different strains of yeast in the fermentation process. Distillation takes place on the lees, and aging is done in very old, small, lightly toasted casks. All of these techniques deliver unique aromatic complexity and balance to the spirit. In 2019, using the patented “instensity” process, the House of CAMUS produced three new and exceptionally aromatic Cognacs: Very Special, VSOP, and XO.
