又是一年。你好,2020 ! 2019年就這樣溜走了,就如同和《時尚精英》走過的日日夜夜,埋案工作 中,一抬頭時光就消失得無影無蹤。 關於這本刊物的故事,始於2011年。那時,幾個海外華人在一起暢聊,他 們發現美國還沒有一本「 為華人而辦 」、「 講述華人成功故事 」的高品質 生活雜誌。 為什麼不呢?他們深知每一個華人背後都有一個承載歲月、 汗水和情感的發光故事。這些故事中或許沒有驚濤駭浪,或許沒有蓋世奇 功,或許沒有感天動地,但卻是一個個鮮活人的真實人生。這些認真、努 力的人生故事,值得被發現、被記載、被刊出。就是懷著這樣的初心, 《時尚精英》的創刊之旅開始。 對於當年的每一個創刊人而言, 《時尚精英》這本雜誌,都是他們人生中所 經營的第一個雜誌出版物。磕磕絆絆中,他們走過了很多的人生第一次, 第一次發現彩版印刷是一個如此複雜和精細的工藝,第一次鼓起勇氣、抹 開臉皮去推廣行銷,第一次約訪到一個仰慕已久的華人精英興奮與雀躍之 情。每一個「 第一次 」,都像是奇妙的緣分之旅。緣分未到時,總是好事 多磨,不見佳音。緣分到了,一切似乎都水到渠成。 Maggie Huang和顏佳團隊以誠

hat relationship does a modern spectator have with a painting created over 500 years ago? It’s sometimes difficult to see meaning in art seemingly outdated in style and subject matter. But if a viewer can look at Sandro Botticelli’s Primavera (Spring), for example, as it relates to certain questions that still affect us, it can regain relevance. For example, asking “How do I feel about the ideas presented in the painting, such as love, beauty, chastity, marriage, humanism, and ethics?” can lead, possibly, to self-discovery. Botticelli created Primavera in the early 1480s as a gift for the Medici family. He often painted for the Medicis, who were interested in the ideas and imagery of classical Greek texts, so this painting contains symbolism and imagery from many ancient authors, with the most influential being Ovid. It helps to read the painting from right to left and to know the characters presented. It begins with Zephyrus (the West Wind) and the nymph Chloris, whose union causes Chloris to pull f lowers from her mouth and transform into Flora, the goddess of spring and flowers. Flora scatters flowers in front of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, who serves as the protector of marriage. Cupid, the son of Venus and Mercury, f loats above his mother, blindfolded, with his arrow pointing toward the Three Graces. The Three Graces often accompany Venus. Respectively, they represent the purity of the virtues chastity, beauty, and love and are often seen in the context of marriage. Mercury, the messenger of the gods, has his back turned to the happenings to the right as if he is leaving the event to report what he has seen to the gods beyond. The painting has been interpreted in many ways, with the most widely accepted interpretation being

All of the characters and their interactions suggest a celebration of marriage and procreation— except for the interaction between Zephyrus and Chloris, which is often seen as a forced union. Yet, this depiction is somewhat appropriate since the marriage this painting supposedly celebrates was a political one. It is not a union of love, emotion, or passion but one in which its participants are forced into a union to increase power for their families. Zephyrus and Chloris, however, eventually have a loving union, which brings about the beauties of spring. This serves to remind the bride that her new journey, though filled with the unknown, will move toward the joys of love and harmony as represented by the center and left side of the painting. An interesting fact that broadens the interpretation of the painting for some is that Primavera was accompanied by another painting, which hung next to it in the bride’s bedchamber: Minerva and the Centaur. The scholar Frank Zöllner believes that the second painting, in contrast to Primavera, presents a powerful woman subduing and taming a sensuous centaur, reminding the new bride that her role is not necessarily a submissive one. She is not merely the subject of politics in this engagement, but a partner in her and her husband’s mutual development. Primavera can also be interpreted in the context of one of the most famous philosophers of the Italian Renaissance, Marsilio Ficino. According to historian E.H. Gombrich, Ficino held great influence over the Medicis and may have been the motivation for Primavera. Ficino suggests that the contemplation of beauty ser ves as a path to the divine. According to Gombrich, Ficino takes the philosophy of Plato,

in combination with others, and suggests that the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece represent the ethical principles found in Platonism, rather than the indulgent characteristics the painting is usually associated with. Therefore, in Primavera, Venus is not the goddess of sensual love, nor a representation of a pagan spring, but instead represents an ethical humanism through which the young Medicis could be educated. For me, the creation of Flora is symbolic of the harmony that results in creation. This harmony is a characteristic of love. Here, Flora, the visual beauty of nature, is the product of love and gives birth to the beauty that is spring. Materially, this represents the actual experience of beautiful things; abstractly, it represents the shift, or spring, from the material to the divine caused by the platonic contemplation of the beautiful. It is at this point that the goddess Venus appears with the Three Graces, but these depictions present more than mere representations of Roman gods and goddesses. They represent a love for humanity, a cultivation of the beautiful, and the restraint of indulgent desires. Mercury turns his back on earthly understandings and points through the clouds to suggest a communion with the divine. To me, this painting attempts to depict the process by which humans become closer to the gods. Each stage is a new beginning, a spring toward the beautiful virtue that deserves to be loved as divine. f just one work by Leonardo da Vinci sings for me the word genius—genius, that is, in the original sense of the word, which describes a life guided by a spirit or even a higher power—it is his drawing The Virgin and Child With Saint Anne and Saint John the Baptist. Scholars don’t agree when the work was created; some say as early as 1499 to 1500 and others as late as 1506 to 1508. Some just throw up their hands and say a range that encompasses the extremes of those dates. The drawing is not a typical cartoon, which most often was a preparatory work for a painting or fresco. It bears no pricked holes along the sketched lines that would have been dusted with charcoal to transfer the image onto a canvas or wall. So it may be that Leonardo intended it as a completed work. It is similar in subject matter to his painting The Virgin and Child With Saint Anne, now in the Louvre. But little St. John does not appear in that painting. Instead, the toddler Jesus is playing with a lamb, meant to symbolize the sacrificial lamb he is destined to become.

The drawing tells a story of motherhood through time—for nothing suggests the mother-child bond more aptly than a child on a mother’s lap. Over the generations, from lap to lap to lap, mothers hold their children until they see them off and into the world to embark on their own journeys. Of the two mothers, the larger and more substantial one is St. Anne, who holds her child Mary as an adult: Mary as a mother herself. Mary cradles her own child, still a babe, as he reaches out. He is almost crawling away from her, out to his own future meeting with John the Baptist. But while meekness can mean submissiveness, its synonyms include patience and forbearance, and even adjectives like long-suffering and resigned. Anyone who’s been a mother or has closely watched a mother knows that patience is crucial to the role. But unless a child has turned wayward, we don’t often think of mothers as long-suffering. But aren’t they? In the course of rearing a child and even in the years beyond those early ones, mothers are likely to endure the pain that their children do, whether it’s a cat scratch, doing poorly on a test, a romance turned sour, or bouts of chemotherapy. Every trial the child faces, the mother, in some measure, does as well. What tremendous strength this requires! How strange that we should see these attributes as weakness. In the attributes of patience and forbearance, we can see in Mary the wisdom to gracefully submit to a power greater than her own. This, however, takes strength of character. Leonardo makes just this point. Taking another look at Mary and Anne, we see that these women are not meek in the sense of weakness. Irrespective of the soft expressions on their faces, Leonardo embodied them with tremendous strength: These legs are more than sturdy. These laps are solid and can bear the weight of the world. Of course, this is not just a painting about motherhood and children. Not only are these biblical figures, but St. Anne’s index finger points to heaven. RADIANT WITH COMPASSION Somehow, with just touches of white chalk, Leonardo managed to show a soft light on St. Mary and the Christ child and around Mary’s head, and the light seems to emanate from within them. artist wanted to acknowledge the lack of their spiritual status in comparison to that of the Madonna and child. Baby Jesus seems to be wriggling out of Mary’s arms as she patiently watches him give a benediction to St. John, who one day will baptize him and set him on his journey as savior. Taken together—in a visual arc moving from Anne to Mary to Jesus to John—this is an image of human love meeting God’s compassion as it pours forth, beyond the family, to the world, as represented by Jesus’s benediction to John.
How well Leonardo’s drawing reveals that enduring for others is the same thing as compassion. STRENGTH AND COMPASSION The image of Anne’s finger pointing to heaven seems almost out of place in this intimate scene. As Anne gazes at her daughter, why is her hand telling us something else? It seems unconnected to the story of family love and God’s compassion. I believe Leonardo shows us a way to better ourselves spiritually. The finger is pointing to heaven for our sake. How can what is depicted in this drawing speak to us? First, of course, we can understand that Anne and Mary represent more than mothers. It is not only mothers who can empathize with the pain of their children; fathers can as well. And, going one step further, the ability to show empathy and compassion is not reserved for parents alone. Since every life in its course must submit to troubles, illnesses, and death, on this point, all humanity is one family. And we can, as all traditional spiritual paths remind us, treat each other with compassion as we suffer through life together. But doing so requires patience to endure insults, disregard faults, and allow ourselves to feel each other’s troubles as our own.

he joyful sounds of firecrackers and laughter fill the air, as millions of families engage in festivities to celebrate the new year. Beginning on the first day of the lunar calendar, Chinese New Year is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in Asia. It traditionally symbolizes the removal of evils and misfortunes, as well as the welcoming of hope and prosperity. Fireworks are used to scare away evil spirits, while families hang New Year couplets, images of family guardians, and auspicious characters on their front doors to avert bad luck. People don their finest new clothes—typically in red, a lucky color—and gather with loved ones to indulge in delectable meals.

Among the many traditions used to celebrate Chinese New Year, a lesser-known one is the custom of enjoying New Year paintings, also known as “Sui Zhao” paintings. These paintings originated in the courts of the Song Dynasty and were created by royal court artists for the enjoyment of the nobility. Due to their elegance and expressiveness, they became a tradition that was passed down throughout dynasties to come. There are traditionally two types of New Year paintings. One depicts dynamic scenes of celebration and symbolizes the replacement of the old with the new. The other is more similar to Western stilllife art; these paintings typically depict vases of flowers, bowls of fruit, and antiquities as symbols of good fortune and prosperity. These artworks offer us valuable glimpses into ancient Chinese culture and traditions. Ding Guanpeng was an artist who served the court in the Qianlong era. He was known for his paintings of Buddhist and Daoist figures, and often incorporated Western methods of perspective in his works. His painting titled Spring Market at Peace and created in 1742 under the Qianlong Emperor, depicts a cheerful scene of people in the countryside celebrating the new year. Various traditions and customs can be observed; fellow countrymen greet each other with deep bows, a merchant sells fireworks, and a performer beats on peace drums. Meticulous shading gives the painting a vivid, lifelike effect. Traditionally, several generations of a family lived in one residence known as a “siheyuan,” or courtyard house. These homes are centered around an open yard surrounded by rooms on all four sides. On New Year's Day, every family’s courtyard has a happy and festive atmosphere. Yao Wenhan’s A Celebration of Chinese New Year was created in the Qing Dynasty and depicts a large family celebrating the Chinese New Year. In the painting, several elders sit in the front hall, leisurely chatting and watching the children play. The children are engaging in a variety of celebratory activities—from lighting fireworks, to frolicking, to playing various games and with silk puppets. The

figures are all dressed in brightly colored clothes, as was customary during New Year’s. The artist paid an extraordinary amount of attention to detail. The children's figures are lively and child-like, rich in color and full of festivity. Two children can be seen squatting on the ground, smiling as they count a basket of colorful firecrackers. Another boy in red is holding incense, carefully approaching the firecrackers on the ground, while the child in green covers his ears, looking over his shoulder with nervous excitement. Judging from the lit firepot, the family may have just completed a spiritual ceremony. According to Chinese folk custom, on the 24th of the twelfth lunar month, the gods will rise and return to the heavens to report back to the Jade Emperor. Therefore, on this day, people hold a “god sending” ceremony. The stunning silk tapestry titled Bird-and-Flower Painting to Celebrate New Year by Song Kesi is an elegant celebration of life. In it, a pair of babblers and pheasants frolick among blooming plum blossom branches. Traditionally, Chinese artwork containing f lowers and birds weren’t created merely to depict the subjects as realistically as possible; instead, artists often expressed their own thoughts and feelings through the subjects. Birds depicted in pairs often symbolize the combination of yin and yang, and represent family harmony. Traditional Chinese New Year customs are deeply infused with ancient beliefs in the gods and the heavens. People in ancient China treated life with humility; for instance, if there was a good harvest, it would be considered a result of the gods’ blessings for doing good deeds. The ancients believed that there was a god dedicated to every aspect of life, and they were all to be devoutly worshiped. Therefore,

he late nights, six-day intensive weeks, and six-month-long tours don’t feel like an overwhelming schedule to dancer Angela Xiao. What for many of us would be a great personal sacrifice, for her is a life well-lived. “I don’t like wasting time,” said Xiao, who has been dancing for ten years with the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, Shen Yun Performing Arts. Exuding a fascinating mix of bubbliness and sincerity, she said that she feels lucky to be doing something purposeful; in fact, sometimes on vacation, she doesn’t know what to do with her time. Xiao loves the excitement of touring—trying new foods and learning new things—but after nearly a

decade of traveling all over the world, she doesn’t rely on novelty to keep her going. Rather, a big part of what keeps her on point is consciously working on her outlook to overcome those subtle negative thoughts that otherwise build up and make long-term commitments difficult. “I’ve had to learn to be more self less,” she said. “When you put yourself first, it actually just causes a bunch of troubles.” Due to the nature of her art, this selflessness is also a key to improving her dance skills. FACING HER SELF In ancient Chinese culture, there was awareness that spiritual principles were behind the workings of natural phenomenon, as well as guiding the events of a person’s life. It was held that to produce great art, artists must align themselves with spiritual principles. People of high caliber would have brightly shining spirits and transmit some of this light to others through their art. The art of someone with a negative outlook would be dark and spread unhappiness. For Xiao, there is very practical and tangible application of this in her art. She explained to Elite Lifestyle Magazine how, beneath the gorgeous costumes and perfectly timed moves, confident self lessness gives her dance life. “You can’t escape yourself,” she said. “In classical Chinese dance, you show your inner self because when dancing—you can’t hide anything. People can see your personality,” she explained. “Sometimes my moves are too small, and I feel like that’s connected with my personality … [So] I try to be more open,” she said. EXPRESSING FEELINGS THROUGH DANCING A dancer’s emotion is also directly addressed in classical Chinese dance training, through a skill called bearing. “Bearing emphasizes internal spirit, breath, intent, personal aura, and deep emotional expression,” the Shen Yun website explains.

Bearing is one of the more advanced skills. For Xiao, it comes more naturally to her in court dances, which are her favorites. She has also played a number of different character roles. Each role presents a unique challenge because she needs to understand the character’s emotions. She recalls one of the first roles she played—a goddess of mercy. After being cast, she felt that it was a good opportunity to cultivate greater mercy and compassion in herself. Other roles have required her to portray more human emotions, including ones that she would normally not experience; for example, those of a mother on her deathbed. For her to understand these feelings and give them form through her movements, it takes great empathy and letting go of her self.

CULTURAL INSPIRATION The sparkle and grandeur of ancient Chinese court life has intrigued Xiao since she was young. Now, after a decade of performing classical Chinese dance, she’s come about as close to it as possible in the modern era. Xiao grew up in Canada, having moved there when she was only four years old. However, she was lucky enough to have her grandparents living with her; they kept her connected to her roots by telling her many Chinese children’s stories. In her teens, she read the four Chinese classic novels; her favorite is Romance of the Three Kingdoms. And she has an affinity for the poem “The Sea” written by the Han Dynasty warlord Cao Cao. In it, he describes his great delight in gazing at the ocean.“It makes me feel very refreshed after reading it,” Xiao shared with Elite. In addition to performing with Shen Yun, Xiao has studied at Fei Tian Academy of the Arts, a private school in upstate New York, where she was further immersed in traditional Chinese culture through in-depth, bilingual courses in history and Chinese language. Two of her current favorite historical characters are Emperor Taizong and his wife, Empress Zhangsun. Following his father’s death, Taizong became the second emperor of China’s Tang Dynasty— the dynasty that is considered China’s golden age.

In the 2016 NTD International Classical Chinese Dance Competition, Angela Xiao portrayed Lady Wenji, a poet and musician who lived during China’s late Eastern Han Dynasty. She spent part of her life as a captive of the Xiongnu until 207, when the warlord Cao Cao, who controlled the Han central government in the final years of the Eastern Han, paid a heavy ransom to bring her back to Han territory. Her twelve-year ordeal became a legend that has been celebrated in ancient Chinese classical poetry, paintings, and dramas. (Courtesy of Larry Dye)
His wife then became empress and was known for her tolerance, wisdom, and personal sacrifices for the country. For example, when she fell ill, it was suggested that the emperor donate more money to temples so that the divine might be inclined to bless her and restore her health. But Empress Zhangsun objected to this, saying that her death would be determined by fate and that the country’s resources should not be wasted on trying to change her destiny. Empress Zhangsun passed away at age 36, but before she left, she made two requests of her husband:

A WEEKEND GETAWAY Located across 165 acres, twenty minutes from the nearest paved road, this idyllic rural getaway is situated among the coastal valleys of Northern California. The homeowners are passionate environmentalists and sought a weekend home to escape from their busy, urban lives. To fulfill the owners’ request for a home that maintained the sense of a camp, Davis designed the house to blend in with its surrounding landscape. For more effective protection from the elements—the scorching sun, coastal fog, and rain that frequents the area—Davis devised two rectilinear dogtrot structures. Each one was carefully crafted by Fairweather & Associates from low-maintenance and wildfire-resistant materials: concrete slabs for the flooring, corrugated Cor-Ten steel that blends into the environment, and heat-reflecting, galvanized corrugated metal for the roofing. The property is made up of two structures: a car barn, and a main pool house placed in an L-shaped orientation. The main structure has three large, primary spaces on opposite ends of the central south-facing porch. Theses spaces are multifunctional, meant for any variety of activities—sleeping, gathering, lounging, yoga, or playing games.

A TREEHOUSE-LIKE RESIDENCE Located amid the stunning greenery of Portola Valley, California, this hillside mid-century home is designed around an existing oak tree and comes with a breathtaking valley vista. The exterior is finished with burnt cedar siding and stucco, giving the home an earthy tone. By pulling inspiration from its woodland environment, the house seamlessly blends into the surrounding landscape. Throughout the main level, which features an open floor plan, the existing windows were swapped for large glass walls to bring in more light. Vast floor-to-ceiling glass doors allow the residents to take full advantage of the beautiful landscape and natural lighting. A cantilevered balcony was added around the dining room, bringing the homeowners closer to the oak tree at the center of the site.

A COASTAL RETREAT IN SEA RANCH A couple who both worked in the San Francisco tech industry sought a relaxing countryside holiday home in Sea Ranch, a planned community in California’s Sonoma County. Located atop a grassy slope, the striking view of the area’s rocky outcrops, ocean, and trees were a key driver in the project. Malcolm Davis worked on carefully positioning openings so as to maintain a strong visual connection between the inside and outside. Smaller windows on the walls facing the road minimize this view. Windows strategically placed to maximize the amount of light help the relatively compact two-bedroom home feel bright, airy, and spacious. Throughout the house, sleek Ligne Roset and Stonco lighting, Hansgrohe f ixtures, and white quartz countertops lend an industrial vibe. The exterior language of natural material continues in the airy, open-plan interiors, with thermal-mass flooring in slab concrete and red oak, and walls lined with plywood.

BREATHABLE HOME IN NOE VALLEY Located on a dense street in Noe Valley, San Francisco, this residence was purchased by a young family looking for a more seamless floor plan after having their second child. Malcolm Davis reinterpreted and expanded the home, reinstating its connection to the neighborhood context so as to celebrate its “old bones.” It was also revamped to maximize access to daylight, the garden below, and the views beyond. Eventually, this house was transformed into a relaxed and inviting family home with plentiful natural light. By taking advantage of sun exposure from all four sides of the home, Malcolm Davis brightened the living areas. Skylights, strategically placed along
the northern walls over existing exposed framing, animate the home with a changing play of light and shadow throughout the day. The floor plan and interior were completely reworked and expanded. A single sloped roof, paired with 11-foot-tall multi-slide doors, defines the addition at the rear. The doors allow the living room and kitchen to open directly onto a generous deck that welcomes indoor-outdoor living. To add warmth to the space, Malcolm Davis brought more cedar wood into the kitchen, where it was added to the underside of the island and on the ceiling. The same original cedar wood was also added to the master bedroom, where a full wall of the golden wood serves as the headboard for the bed.

eeking a living space close to work, a plastic surgeon decided to convert the second f loor of his clinic into a home for his wife and three children. He reached out to Audax, Toronto’s premier interior design firm, which transformed the 4,200-square-foot space into a luxurious, open-concept domicile. Influenced by Milanese design, the home is cozy yet full of style. It has all the comforts of a traditional family home, including a formal foyer, dining room, a hidden butler’s pantry, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and an outdoor patio. A private elevator

Audax’s custom Donatello Console is featured in the formal dining room, along with velvet Rialto Navy Jonathan Adler chairs and a rosewood table. The living room includes a double-sided fireplace with a marble mantel, Restoration Hardware swivel chairs, and a tufted red sofa with custom-made cushions. The powder room is the height of luxury, with gold umbrella hexagon wall tiles, textured gold wallpaper, and a custom Noir Saint-Laurent marble vanity. Inside the dramatic master ensuite, a striking burled elmwood wall in a high gloss piano finish is paired with Grand Antique black marble flooring.

In the kitchen, traditional wall paneling is set against contemporary-styled walnut and blue cabinetry and an integrated breakfast banquette. Designed by Montalba Architects, an international architecture firm based in Los Angeles, whose team values emphasize the importance of material, the Zen Pod boasts an elegant wooden interior design, seemingly effortless yet refined to the utmost detail. What’s more, inspired by Japanese Zen culture, the Montalba designers constructed each of their pods based on the notion of interconnection between all things, attributed to the philosophy of Wu Xing, or the movement of Five Elements. Together with six music students supervised by NACMS, nine NACMS musicians performed classical music and famous pieces by Mozart, Alexander Borodin, and Jean-Baptiste Barrière as well as the D Major String Trio, which is a piece from their upcoming album Imagery in Music, which will be released soon. The D Major String Trio was composed by Sergey Ivanovich Taneyev in 1907.
The year 2020 is the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. A WELL-CURATED MENU The menu at missKOREA includes a wide variety of barbecued meats, each with its own distinctive appeal. These include dry-aged rib eye, beef rib, beef bulgogi, beef tongue, thin-sliced beef brisket, pork ribs, pork belly, and more. missKOREA’s signature dish is the Clay Pot Galbi, which is made from short ribs and marinated in its own original sauce, before being placed in a special clay pot for over 48 hours. The meticulous two-day process brings out the best texture and finest flavor. To allow guests to enjoy a diverse sampling of meats, missKOREA has curated three barbecue set meals: the Longevity Set, the Happiness Set, and the Love Set.
