On September 27, Elite Lifestyle Magazine co-hosted an exclusive cocktail party to celebrate the 2018 Mid-Autumn Festival with Hueb, a fine jewelry brand from Brazil sold in Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and its Madison Avenue flagship store. The emcee Anastasia Lin, Miss World Canada, opened the evening. Dozens of guests from the Elite Club attended the event, enjoying mooncakes, light refreshments, cocktails, and a raffle of Hueb products. Gift bags from Elite Lifestyle Magazine were sponsored by Dior, Clé de Peau, and Neuhaus.

aterina and Raffaele Fabrizio have an innate sixth sense about textiles. Just as a mariner might read the almost imperceptible ocean currents or shifting wisps of clouds, the Fabrizios are fluent in the language of fabrics. The Milan-based siblings, co-owners and directors of their family-run company, Dedar, earlier this summer opened their first stateside showroom on the 10th floor of Manhattan’s Decoration and Design Building. The 2,600-square-foot space was inspired by mid-century aesthetics and designed by their friend

and collaborator, the celebrated Florentine architect and designer Michele Bönan. The fabrics, illuminated under beautiful lighting, are clearly the stars of the show. Dedar was founded in 1976 in the Italian silk region of Como, and after Caterina and Raffaele took over from their parents, the fabric house expanded internationally, with clients in 80 countries. In 2011, it launched a partnership with Hermès, producing and distributing home fabrics and wallpapers. The Fabrizios have been living in the tactile world of textiles for much of their lives, thanks to parents who took them on travels through eastern Europe, Turkey, and India, among many places, and collected rugs along the way. Caterina, a vivacious woman blessed with lush, wavy hair, said, “I think we have seen thousands of carpets being opened and closed.” Raffaele remembers “the sensation in Anatolia of looking and choosing those fabrics—the sensation and the smell of the wool.” The old patterns of the Anatolian kilims were a mystery. “It was a kind of language that you cannot read— because it is an old pattern that has meaning in the local culture that we loved, but without understanding the meaning … a hidden language I’d say.” Through their travels, the more they saw, and the more they came to understand what was valuable. “Sometimes you find pieces that are part of a typology of carpets but that are very special, so you

understand that the person who was behind it had a very special eye,” Caterina said. “Sometimes something pops up which is quite extraordinary—sometimes it’s an imperfection that makes you connect to the piece, sometimes it’s the fact that it is a little bit not symmetrical, or a little bit off the average.” “Something magical,” added Raffaele. The ease with which they travel through cultures has made them uniquely suited to work with their mostly international clientele (only 20 percent is in Italy), with their different, cherished values: refinement and elegance at a premium with French and Italian clients, and comfort in the United States, according to Caterina. Raffaele is an architect by training, and he joined the family business when he was 29. “I tried to fight my destiny but I lost,” he joked, adding, “I thought there was a good seed that could be grown.” Caterina studied international relations, but when she started supporting her parents when they asked for her help, she became instantly hooked by the possibilities, from both creative and business perspectives. Dedar’s technical expertise is renowned. The textile producing process is highly complex and fragmented, and the company creates its own textiles, working with Como-based experts specialized in different tasks along the way—making for an enriching exchange, Caterina said. IMAGINATION The gorgeous New York showroom is a window into Dedar’s world. Patterns and colors are a delight for the eyes; the textiles—over 3,000 of them—just beg to be touched. “It’s something that touches your eyes, and at the same time something that has to do with dreams, with imagination, with the visual memory of patterns. Fabrics activate so many things at the same time,” Caterina said. And then, endless possibilities beckon. “You imagine already what you could do with it,” she said. “The way it will be used, and the way you will be in connection with this product that you make. The magical part of the fabric is that it speaks to many senses at the same time, and it also requires you to go into a future imagination.” Asked about her personal favorite textiles, Caterina lit up as she lovingly showed off Romeo & Giuletta, a silk velvet. Velvet is a pillar of Dedar—with about 300 solid colors—made from silk, cotton, mohair, wool, and Trevira. Blending visual elegance, softness, and durability, the collection is continuously updated. The sheen of Romeo & Giuletta is delicate but rich, with beautiful reflections; and the texture, soft to the touch, is a dream. “Because silk takes color in a way that no other fabric can, it’s very vibrant,” Caterina said. “And with silk, the colors can be very bold and they still remain very refined.” In her mind’s eye, she sees its possibilities: “I see wonderful upholstery and pillows … and I like to touch it, but it is actually a beautiful velvet to be used for draping.” Dedar’s first velvet is a cotton velvet named Adamo & Eva, “the beginning of all velvets,” said Caterina, which has been used by the Queen of England and Tiffany. “But if your heart is romantic, you want Romeo & Giuletta.” As for Raffaele, one of his favorites is an abstract floral pattern called Dalie Papaveri Tulipani. The inspiration is the reverse side of a jacquard fabric—it has no function, the yarns are loose, it looks nice, and

FUTURE AND PAST Dedar is evolving while keeping its roots alive. “There is always something to be discovered, and this is what keeps us going forward doing new things … There are no mistakes at the base,” Raffaele said. “Maybe there are successful products or unsuccessful products, but no mistakes.” Similarly, inspiration for many of their fabrics sometimes comes from the past with a look toward the future, like how a tiger design from ancient Tibetan rugs inspired a contemporary version on opulent velvet. The Fabrizios’ sense of humor comes through too, as with a Tie Break collection of fabrics inspired by men’s ties. Still, the pace of production nowhere nears that for fashion. “What is wonderful in textiles for interiors is that they don’t need to change that often,” Caterina said. “A fabric may take a year, two years, to become a product because of the creativity of the study, the technical aspect takes time, but then the fabric can last maybe 10 years, maybe 20 years in the collection.” “It’s timeless, what we do.”

he mirror is an apt metaphor for paintings by Dutch masters. These works reach across centuries to transfix contemporary viewers with their luminous surfaces and lifelike details. They reflect quotidian experience, the virtues of domestic life, and local landscapes. But the precise re-creation of detail in Dutch painting is at the same time a mastery of illusion, and that duality continues to fascinate viewers. Mirrors, after all, both ref lect and alter. Jewel-like still life paintings that faithfully capture each flower petal and fold of velvet carry warnings of rot in a curled lemon slice. Boisterous family scenes that display familiar affection and mischief are as staged as a Shakespearean play, and as encoded with moral messages. “By illuminating an interior world as much as illustrating an exterior one, [Dutch art] … moves back and forth between morals and matter, between the durable and the ephemeral, the concrete and the imaginary, in a way that was peculiarly Netherlandish,” writes historian Simon Schama in his book Embarrassment of Riches: An interpretation of Dutch Culture in the Golden Age. The exhibition In Praise of Painting: Dutch Masterpieces at the Met showcases some of the museum’s most revered paintings of the Golden Age while challenging assumptions about the canon. “I wanted to have a blend of very iconic, and beloved paintings, like the Vermeers, and the paintings that had long been in storage and would surprise even regular visitors,” says

Adam Eaker, Assistant Curator of European Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “The show emphasizes cultural and historical context. It juxtaposes celebrated realist paintings with lesser-known idealizing or classical works.” The title of the show is taken from a 1642 treatise by Philip Angel, which celebrates painting’s ability to realistically transcribe nature. The presentation’s 67 works, all from the Met’s permanent collection, are arranged thematically, addressing such concerns as religion, the domestic lives of women, consumer culture, and the influence of Rembrandt’s work on his peers and students. It upends visitors’ preconceptions about the period, demonstrating that naturalism in painting coexisted with classicism and romanticism, and explores various artists’ approaches to the human form.

The show opens with a work by Rembrandt van Rijn, regarded as the greatest artist of the Dutch Golden Age. In Aristotle with a Bust of Homer (1653), the artist contemplates the fleeting quality of fame. The painting depicts the philosopher dressed in luxurious contemporary clothing and a shimmering gold medallion with the portrait of his patron Alexander the Great. Standing in darkness, his face and robes are illuminated in golden light, his gaze ruminative, as he rests a hand on the head of the poet. Works by Dutch masters have a long history at the museum. “In the late 19th century, when the Met was founded, Dutch painting enjoyed immense cultural prestige,” Eaker says. “The Met’s early donors also felt connected to the history of New York, which was founded as a Dutch colony in the 17th century.” On display are paintings mainly from Benjamin Altman’s bequest, the Robert Lehman Collection, and the Jack and Belle Linsky Collection. The exhibition’s thematic arrangement seems to urge us to draw parallels between the world of 17thcentury Holland and our own. “I haven’t made those connections explicit, but I do think there’s a lot in common between our society and the Dutch Golden Age,” Eaker says. “I do hope that visitors will find these works relevant to their own lives in the present day.” The Golden Era spanned the 17th century when the Netherlands had achieved independence from Spain and controlled a maritime global empire, dominating over half of European trade and monopolizing trade with Asia. It was a literate, religiously tolerant and diverse society, experiencing rapid urbanization, due in large part to foreign and domestic immigration. Social status was based on income rather than birth. What some experts consider one of the world’s first modern economies created a booming market for luxury goods, and that wealth is recorded in the luminous paintings of the period. This artistic blossoming took place in the wake of the Protestant Reformation, and a number of works reflect that transition. In Emanuel de Witte’s Interior of the Oude Kerk, Delft (probably 1650), the church is depicted as a social meeting place: Children play on the base of a column, and a dog urinates on a column. There is no pulpit and the walls are whitewashed, in obedience to a ban on religious images in churches and Calvinist notions of simplicity. But in this playful

scene, there is also evidence of a fresh tomb: a stern reminder of mortality. At a time of social mobility, portraits featured members of the mercantile class and are embedded with clues to status. In The Van Moerkerken Family (1653– 54), Gerard ter Borch the Younger tenderly depicts a father, mother, and small son, the parents dressed in elegant black clothing from previous Spanish rule. The wife is positioned on the left, underscoring her status as the mother of a male heir. The husband holds a gleaming pocket watch, simultaneously a symbol of wealth and status as well as a warning of mortality. The Dutch were proud of their cultivated land, reclaimed from watery terrain. Landscape painting was elevated as a genre; the term itself comes from the

Dutch “landschap.” In Wheat Fields (1670) by Jacob van Ruisdael, clouds with dark undersides rise up over a wide-angle view of grain fields, a glimpse of sea on the far left. The dramatic work naturalistically depicts the Dutch countryside, yet there is majesty in the image that suggests providence at work. Frans Post’s A Brazilian Landscape (1650) reveals a nostalgia for colonial power and a darker side of the Dutch narrative. Women as subjects and artists are featured prominently in the exhibition. The newly restored A Vase of Flowers (1716) by Margareta Haverman is one of two known works by the artist in existence. detail crawl up stems and petals. Haverman was innovative in her use of Prussian blue and Naples yellow, pigments new to artists in the Netherlands at the time. Johannes Vermeer’s iconic Young Woman with a Water Pitcher (1662) was the artist’s first to enter an American public collection. The image is one of serene stillness and harmony: A woman in a blue dress and white headpiece rests one hand on an open window, light falling on her forearm, and holds a pitcher with the other. The gold-plated pitcher and basin and Persian carpet suggest prosperity. The viewer glimpses the sanctity of a private moment, intimate but distant. When confronted with domestic disorder, the Dutch still use the proverb “as messy as a Steen painting.” Jan Steen’s The Dissolute Household 1663–64) comically depicts family members engaging in a litany of moral transgressions: mischievous boys torment a sleeping woman, a husband flirts with the maid, a Bible is trampled underfoot. Hanging overhead, a basket of sticks and a plague rattle warn of a dire fate to come. One of the presentation’s high points is Rembrandt’s Self-Portrait from 1660, restored for the exhibition. The removal of layers of synthetic varnish applied in the 1950s reveals the subtlety of his colors and the vigor of his brush strokes. He was 54 at the time it was painted, and his straightforward gaze and face scored with lines convey the mastery of the artist, as well as some of the woes he had experienced at this point in his life: bankruptcy and the loss of both a wife and son. Paintings came out of storage for the exhibition, including Apollo and Aurora (1671) by Gerard de Lairesse. Perhaps stung by Rembrandt’s portrait of him, showing his features ravaged by syphilis, de Lairesse became a fierce opponent of his rival’s uncompromising realism. His sumptuous depiction of deities with youthful features reflects classical ideals of beauty, sharply diverging from the naturalistic style we now associate with Dutch painting. With their surface richness and encoded messages, these works present a complex and nuanced narrative of the Dutch artistic tradition, and the diverse and dynamic culture they arose from. Says Eaker:

n a bustling restaurant of excited chatter and shouting toddlers, Kaidi Wu is the opposite of her surroundings. Her voice is like a spring breeze— gentle and slow, serene and unhurried. She seems to emerge from a different world, a realm of tranquility and grace. Kaidi first saw Shen Yun Performing Arts after she had immigrated from China to Toronto, Canada. Like many in the audience, she thought to herself, “Oh, how I wish I could become one of them!” Now, Kaidi is a principal dancer with the performing arts company that inspired her dream, and she has come to embody the ethereal beauty that had mesmerized her when she first saw Shen Yun.

INNER BEAUTY Dressed in a flowing white gown adorned with yellow and blue, Kaidi flurries a pink silk cloth and floats across the stage as if carried by a cloud in New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television’s 2012 International Classical Chinese Dance Competition. There’s a twinkle in her eyes, a smile on her lips. Immersed in Kaidi’s self-choreographed piece, audiences can almost see the rippling waters in a turquoise lake, feel the gentle breeze of a balmy morning, and hear the chirping swallows in a secluded valley. How does a dancer capture such beauty, we wonder. “This kind of beauty should be the natural reflection of your inner self,” Kaidi tells us. It’s not about outward appearances, but instead about the channeling of inner virtues. Thus, classical Chinese dance cannot be separated from the cultivation of a kind and virtuous character. This past September, in NTD Television’s recent competition, Kaidi chose to perform the role of Wang Baochuan. From an aristocratic family, Wang Baochuan had fallen in love with the commoner Xue Rengui because he was a kind man of excellent character. After they married, he rose up the ranks to become a Tang Dynasty general and was away on the battlefield for many years. Living alone in a crude cave dwelling, Wang Baochuan “had to overcome all kinds of hardships. But she was not fearful, and she simply persisted in waiting,” Kaidi says. Eighteen years later, she was finally rewarded when she reunited with her beloved husband, who had returned triumphantly from the battlefield. Kaidi says that in Wang Baochuan, she saw loyalty, perseverance, and selflessness—all characteristics she admires. As part of Shen Yun Performing Arts, Kaidi is not only reviving traditional Chinese dance but also showcasing the values of the ancients. Back then, the paragon of a Chinese woman epitomized refinement, grace, and virtue, things swept under by the tides of modernity.

無論是飄逸靈秀的長袖仙子,或氣質秀雅的大唐仕 女,抑或是活潑俏麗的苗族少女,她皆能游刃有餘地生動 詮釋,帶給觀眾情溢乎詞的美好體驗。 曼妙優雅 動靜咸宜 訪談中,吳凱迪憶起這些年演出的劇目,她不時佐以手勢 來解釋舞蹈中的意境,那纖柔的手指搭配動作線條,彷彿 連周遭的空氣也饒富韻味。 2012年,吳凱迪參加了新唐人電視台第五屆「 全世界 中國古典舞大賽」,並榮獲少年女子組銀獎。她在參賽曲 目 《輕紗曼舞》中,舞步輕柔如踏雲霓,手舞薄紗若綿綿細 水,眼帶一抹淡雅微笑。人們沉浸在其曼妙舞姿中,彷彿 能見一汪碧水上的漣漪,感到晨間徐風拂面,側聞幽谷中 的鶯燕輕鳴。「 動中有靜」,在疏密相間的舞步中,她成 功舞出一幅悠然恬靜畫面,盡現傳統東方女性的溫柔慧秀 之美。 我們 問:妳是如何達到那 種美?她回道: 「 這 種美, 應是內心自然的流露。」吳凱迪表示,她性格本較柔,因 此演繹較為優美的曲目時,她感到格外舒心。隨其日益成 熟的心境,她越發能體會東方女性之所以能體現柔美的氣 韻,是源自內在的賢良淑德。 今秋九月,吳凱迪亦出賽第八屆古典舞大賽,演出舞 劇《寒窯》。民間傳說中,唐朝大將薛仁貴,長年在外領兵 打仗,其妻王寶釧在簡陋的窯洞苦守十八年,靜待丈夫歸 來。「 她要克服種種困難,但是她不畏懼,就是堅持等下 去。」吳凱迪認為,王寶釧的故事正體現了中華傳統女性 的忠貞、堅忍、無私等美德。 吳凱迪擔綱領舞的神韻藝術團,旨在恢復與弘揚中 國傳統文化藝術。可以說,神韻賦予了她舒展傳統東方女 性之美的舞臺,她和同團的舞蹈演員一同藉此舞臺,向世 人展現純正的中華文化內涵。誠如觀看過神韻演出的觀眾 評價,神韻展現了何謂真正的女性之美,告訴大家「 中國女 人本應有的模樣——溫柔、柔和、美麗、沒有野心、令人 愉悅。」 修習心性 純淨內心 談起舞蹈學習面臨的考驗,吳凱迪說老師曾指出她表現得 不夠穩,她形容: 「 就是氣浮著、不夠穩,不夠像個大演員 一樣。」她進一步坦露自己以往的心理素質不夠穩健,較 易緊張。後來她認真反省,一步步地修正,果然漸入佳境。

A TRANQUIL MIND When speaking about the challenges of learning classical Chinese dance, Kaidi reveals that her biggest challenge was mental, not physical. A teacher once told her that she was not steady enough as a dancer, as if holding her breath on the surface. She was like a leaf that drifted about at the whims of the breeze. “I easily became nervous,” Kaidi says. Over time, she realized the source of the problem. “I worried about how others would view me. If I thought about myself, I would become more nervous.” She thus had to learn to calm her mind and dispel the insecurities that distracted her. For Kaidi, handkerchief dances have always been especially challenging. One of the most impressive parts of the dance is when a dancer twirls her handkerchief into the air, performs a front aerial, and then successfully catches the handkerchief before it falls to the ground. As she worried about potentially failing to catch the handkerchief, she would do poorly. “When we perform, we shouldn’t think about ourselves. Just think about what you should do with a steady, unwavering heart,” Kaidi says. Beginning in 2012, Kaidi was given lead roles in dances in Shen Yun’s world tours. Her new roles brought on more responsibility, and it became more important for her to maintain a steady mindset. “You can’t stand out by yourself,” Kaidi says. Instead, she strives to assimilate to the larger body, to perfect the performance as a whole. “We are all doing the same thing. One person’s strength cannot match what the group has as a whole,” Kaidi says. Over time, she learned to focus less on herself and to adapt to those around her, putting their needs above her own. Only then could her performances truly move audiences.

我們好奇她是如何克服這種心理狀態?她說: 「有 時候比較緊張是因為擔心別人怎麼看我,想自己的時候 就會比較緊張。其實放下自己後,去做好該做的,就不 會感覺緊張,也會跳得比較好。」 這份 體悟也體現在表演中,她分享了演出神韻《手 絹舞》的考驗。該舞蹈的精采看點是先將手絹旋轉拋上 空後,再「 前挺 」( 騰空翻躍技巧)將手絹接回,此舞 技每每迎來滿堂喝彩。在無數次的練習過程中,她有個 深刻感觸: 「 我們表演時,不要去想自己,你就想你該做 的,抱著一個平平穩穩的心去做。」擔心自己的表現好 壞會影響正常發揮,若能將「 自我 」拋諸在後,自然水到 渠成。 2012年吳凱迪便開始擔綱神韻領舞,如今已有6年 的經驗。演出中除了群體舞蹈,領舞還須負責一些特殊 舞段,此外,演出舞劇時若擔任要角,則需時刻留心與 其他角色之間的配合。她強調: 「 一定要跟大家感覺是在 一起的,不能把自己擺出來,而是要將自己擺在其中。」 「 因為我們做的是同一件事,一個人的力量比不了 大家整體加在一起,大家都要放下一些個人的東西。」 吳凱迪深信並如此實踐著。如今她謙和、成熟而穩重, 待在神韻多年,她感覺自己提高最多的不僅是日益精進 的舞藝,更重要的是心性的修習,純淨了她的內心。 心繫使命 傳遞真相 除了唯美優雅的舞蹈以及再現傳統美德,吳凱迪也曾詮 釋令人敬佩的現代角色。 2017年的神韻巡演劇目 《善與 惡》,她飾演一位孤兒,多年後才發現當年失去父母的 真相:父母因修煉法輪大法而遭受中國共產黨的迫害。 劇中,女孩 在 隨 時可能 遭受 迫害 的 環 境 下,仍 毅 然追尋雙親足跡走入信仰,堅守她心中的正確價值。劇 末,她堅定地拉起寫著「 真、善、忍 」的橫幅,那份堅忍 與無畏強權的表現,使觀眾潸然淚下。 這樣的劇情並非單純的「 創作」,而是正在中國發 生的真實故事。法輪大法是以「 真、善、忍 」為原則的修 煉大法,在中國曾有上億人學煉。孰料1999年後風雲變 色,中國共產黨下令鎮壓法輪功,開啟一場長達19年的 迫害,至今仍未結束。

FULFILLING HER PURPOSE As a dancer, Kaidi evokes not only the grace of celestial fairies and imperial palace maidens but also the dignity of modern-day heroes. In Shen Yun’s 2017 world tour, in the piece titled “A Child’s Choice,” she played an orphaned girl who later discovers the truth behind her parents’ deaths. As practitioners of the Chinese spiritual discipline Falun Dafa, they had been brutally killed by the Chinese communist regime for their faith. The dance’s storyline draws from real events occurring in China. The spiritual practice of Falun

「 在演的時候會想到他們又堅強但又要忍,可是在 那 種 痛 苦的 情 況下,就 得 堅 定信念,要 把 那 些 融在一 起,然後把自己放在那個角色裡。」吳凱迪訴說著揣摩 角色的心境。在《善與惡》的演出中,她感到自己真的成 為那位女孩,每一手勢與眼神皆真摯而傳神,細膩地舞 出其心境的轉變。 其實 在現實中,她 也曾 有過 類似 遭 遇。吳 凱 迪當 年在中國家鄉時,因家人修煉法輪大法,姥姥家曾被抄 過。此外,她在校就讀期間老師不讓她參加期末考試, 使她被迫留級,她也曾莫名被同學以水瓶攻擊頭部,當 時的她很是困惑。 │39

Dafa once had an estimated 100 million adherents in China. But in 1999, the Chinese Communist Party ordered a nationwide persecution, beginning 19 years of brutality and inhumanity that continue to this day. Instead of succumbing to the pressure of the persecution, Kaidi’s character continues her parents’ legacy, standing up for what is right. At the end of the piece, she resolutely unfurls a banner with the Chinese characters for truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance— the central tenets of Falun Dafa. Her determination and fearlessness move audiences to tears. Growing up in a family of Falun Dafa practitioners, Kaidi had personally experienced the far-reaching claws of the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution. When she was living in China with her grandparents (her parents had immigrated to Canada first), their home was raided by police because they practiced Falun Dafa. At elementary school, Kaidi was discriminated against, forcibly held back one year, and sometimes bullied by her classmates, who once hit her with a water bottle. At the time, young Kaidi was simply bewildered. It wasn’t until she was about to leave China that she came to realize she had been treated unfairly because of her family’s faith. Kaidi speaks of these past circumstances lightly, and she laughs as she recalls how clueless she was back then. Although her own suffering was relatively minor, she feels for her fellow Falun Dafa practitioners in China who have lost their freedoms, their careers, and even their lives as a result of the persecution. She thus cherishes opportunities to portray these stories on stage. “Many people say they cannot believe this is happening in China. Many people also say they were moved to tears,” Kaidi says. At these moments, she feels in her heart, “We didn’t do this for nothing. Everything we do is worth it.” As our interview concluded, we set off for a photo shoot in a nearby park. At our last stop on the sandy beach of a lake, we asked Kaidi to perform a few dance poses and leaps. She found a nearby wooden pole to lean on as she stretched, and she pressed on it two or three times to check its sturdiness. In the next second,

she had kicked her leg effortlessly behind her head to form a straight line pointing to the heavens. As she took off her sneakers for the photo shoot, we saw that her toes and heels were covered in scars, the battle wounds of a professional dancer. But she seemed not to notice the existence of these wounds. Wearing an unadorned black shirt, she leapt into the air with the brilliant colors of sunset as her backdrop, blossoming in time that seemed to stop. Her silhouette was like an imprint of her many years on stage, a decade of stirring splendor. Through it all, we see the warm smile on her face, gentle and sincere, accompanied by the radiant hues of twilight. 吳凱迪輕輕地談起這些往事,沒有情緒波動,她只 笑說自己當年傻呼呼的,全然沒發覺背後因由。直到出 國前,她才知道這些不公的待遇,僅因家人堅持自己的 信仰。能有機會在神韻的舞臺上親自演出與迫害法輪大 法相關的劇目,於她而言意義非凡。 「 很多人會說,不敢相信這些竟然在中國發生,很多 人也說到他們感動得流淚⋯⋯」吳凱迪轉述她曾聽聞的 觀眾反饋,那一刻她心想: 「 我們做的一切都是值得的!」 採訪結束當天還安排了拍攝行程,最後的拍攝地是 在湖邊的沙岸。到達後目的後,吳凱迪在附近的木桿旁 熱身,她試了試那木桿是否夠堅固,用力地壓了兩到三 下,下一秒便把腿往後一踢,雙腿成一字型,看似毫不 費力。 她脫下鞋後,腳趾、腳背上有無數的傷疤,湊近一 看都替她覺得疼,但她似乎感覺不到這些傷口的存在。 她身著樸素輕便的黑衣在沙岸凌空而躍,在恍若靜止的 時間裡綻放。 那綽約的舞姿在夕陽下的剪影,彷如她十年來在舞 臺上的縮影,是歲月的積澱,更是一種使命的兌現。雖然 逆著光,但仍能清晰瞥見她掛在臉上的笑靨,那是心繫 觀眾的真摯神情,伴著溫黃的落日餘暉,顯得格外動人。

ituated in Toronto’s bustling Little Italy district is a cozy yet contemporary home, designed to accommodate a family seeking the conveniences of an apartment with all the amenities of a house. Audax, a Toronto, Canada-based architecture and interior design firm, has impeccably transformed the third floor of a 1980s commercial building into this family-friendly abode. The home harmoniously integrates modern and traditional design elements, giving the space a luxurious yet cozy feel. Upon walking out of a private elevator, directly accessible from the street below, one steps onto the Nero Marquina and statuario marble f loors of the foyer. Sweeping, floor-length windows and minimal white walls give the living room a bright and airy feel, contributing to the welcoming ambience. The symmetrical layout adds balance to the room; matching blue velvet sofas surround the Fibonacci coffee table, and twin double French doors with cremone bolts flank the marble-clad fireplace.

hen a client reached out to Larson Architecture Works with a vague “something is not quite right” about her apartment on Park Avenue, the New York City-based architecture firm found the perfect solutions. Directed by Douglas Larson, the firm thoughtfully reinvented the apartment to echo the great houses of Europe, creating a design that is classical in structure and luxurious in its spaciousness and textures.

and inclinations. At Park Avenue, these nuances are reflected in the redesign of a bathroom shared by the guest bedroom and the library. Originally a bathroom shared by two bedrooms, it now had to do double duty as a bathroom for the guest bedroom and a powder room that could be discreetly accessed from the library. Larson Architecture Works’ ingenious solution: a bookcase that acts as a hidden door to the powder room. The door is situated in a corner of the library, so guests can slip in and out without calling attention to themselves. BALANCED SURROUNDINGS According to the firm’s design philosophy, “the organization of space and the unfolding of experiences in the environment should enhance our understanding of our surroundings.” This philosophy is core to the experience Larson strove to create in his renovation of the Park Avenue apartment, and it is most clearly reflected in the new enfilade, an architectural feature characterized by a suite of rooms with aligned doorways. Inspired by the enfilades in the great houses of Europe, Larson broke through walls to align the openings of the library, living room, and dining room, which all line a window wall of the apartment. The result is a beautiful sightline through the house and a feeling of spaciousness. These three rooms all embody Larson’s philosophy regarding the design of a space’s surroundings. The library, which originally had only one wall of books, is now lined with shelves on all four walls, creating a cozy reading nook surrounded by literature and art. Similarly, the dining room walls are decorated with matching wallpaper panels. The living room, situated in between the library and dining room, features 11 Ionic pilasters in a pattern around the room, creating a regular rhythm of walls and openings. Larson also found inspiration from the architecture surrounding the apartment. As such, he designed the living room pilasters to mirror the facade of a nearby church, visible through the windows of the dining room.

A BEAUTIFUL FINISH Larson Architecture Works aims to make each of its projects truly memorable—and it is the final overlay of visual artistry that achieves that. The apartment features an eclectic variety of furniture, with French-designed chairs and a Chinese-inspired carpet in the living room, a classic English Georgian dining table in the dining room, and a modern-style sofa in the library. All the furniture was custom-made to perfectly match its respective space in the home. To enhance the flooring, Larson Architecture Works sanded off the dark finish of the original white oak parquet de Versailles and left it natural, allowing light to play off the unstained wood.

hen we ask Belinda Leong about her special granola, her face lights up. “Want me to get some? Do you want to try it?” She quickly disappears and reappears holding a neatly packaged bag of granola. The granola is delightful: It smells like popcorn and has a kind of heartwarming deliciousness that reminded me of childhood. Belinda describes it better: “It’s like a party of textures in your mouth. It’s crunchy, airy, crispy, and it’s not sweet.” Once you start, it’s hard to stop, and it tastes wonderful on its own, without milk or yogurt. Over the next few days, I keep popping some into my mouth. At her bakery in San Francisco, b. Patisserie, Belinda conjures up a delightful assortment of pastries that are much like her granola—enchanting combinations of flavors and textures that excite your taste buds without ever feeling too sweet or intense. Since Belinda opened b. Patisserie with Michel Suas, a renowned baker and pastry chef from France, they’ve built it into a neighborhood fixture and one of the most beloved bakeries in San Francisco. Belinda and Michel were also recently honored with the 2018 James Beard Award for Outstanding Baker. Each of their meticulously baked pastries represents their humble, sincere heart toward their customers.

the San Francisco Baking Institute and impressed Michel. And she was always eager for more opportunities to learn hands-on. After eight years at Gary Danko, she flew to Europe to stage for giants in the culinary and pastry world like Pierre Hermé in France, Bubó in Spain, Noma in Denmark, and In de Wulf in Belgium. Like Belinda, Michel was never particularly suited for learning in a classroom. At 14, he was deemed too rowdy for school and was told to go learn a trade. So he chose cooking, later switched to pastry, and by 21, he was the head pastry chef of Restaurant Charles Barrier, one of the few French restaurants honored with three Michelin stars. It was nerve-wracking—“You never gain weight because you’re scared”—but also wonderfully fun. After two or three years, Michel was ready for a new adventure, so he flew to the United States with a backpack and three hundred dollars to begin his career anew. Now he’s the go-to guy for artisan bread and pastry, offering advice to many establishments like La Brea Bakery in Los Angeles and Balthazar in New York City. When Belinda returned to San Francisco, she sought Michel’s advice on starting her own bakery. Together, they built b. Patisserie, which unites the exquisite highend pastries of France with the casual, relaxed vibe of San Francisco. It’s comfortable and welcoming—no chef coats, no chef hats—and the open kitchen allows people to see all the dessert-making magic. Instead of choosing the busiest part of town, Belinda and Michel went for a quieter part of San Francisco. It’s not the kind of place you stumble upon while walking through the city. It’s the kind of place you hear about from friends and go searching for.“Whoever decides to come, they decided to,” Michel says. “You see people coming with big smiles because it’s a destination.”

FLAVOR AND TEXTURE In a single pastry, Belinda never uses more than three flavors, so she doesn’t confuse the palate. Besides the flavors typically found in French pastry, she also incorporates more Asian ingredients, like red bean, sago, mango, coconut, green tea, and almond jello. So what makes the ideal dessert? “The flavors pop, and they’re alive in my mouth, and there’s a lot of textures that surprise my palate and a balance of sweetness to savory to saltiness, ” Belinda says. Michel elaborates with a description of the perfect

croissant: “It has to be that when you bite on it, you get a little crust on it; you can hear a little crust. Then you go through it and start to feel a little more of a velvety texture, and then all of a sudden you have an explosion of flavor with the butter and fermentation.” BUILDING A COMMUNITY Every day, customers pour into b. Patisserie to get their “shot of sugar or happiness” as Michel likes to phrase it. “You can become a little cocky and pretentious because of the crowd,” Michel says. 對於喜歡逛博物館、美術館的朋友而言,美國首都華盛
