On February 1, Elite Lifestyle Magazine co-hosted an exclusive wine tasting to usher in the lunar new year with Ao Yun, a luxury red wine backed by Moët Hennessy. Its vineyards are nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas in China’s Yunnan Province. The region’s high altitudes, dry climate, and intense sunlight endow it with a unique terroir perfect for creating wines of unmatched character. At Hennessy’s headquarters in New York City, Elite Club members were first treated with some of the world’s finest vintage Champagne—Dom Pérignon. During the wine tasting, Olivier Gailly, prestige brand manager of the Estates and Wines division of Moët Hennessy USA, described Ao Yun’s distinctively rich taste and silky smooth texture. Only 24,000 bottles of the winery’s first vintage, Ao Yun 2013, were released worldwide, with 4,000 available in the United States. Tasting the fine wine, Elite Club members relished in Ao Yun’s intense flavors and aromas drawn from the distant Himalayas.

In celebration of the 2018 Lunar New Year, Elite Lifestyle Magazine co-hosted an exclusive cocktail party with Tommy Hilfiger at its Fifth Avenue flagship store, a classy space adorned with crystal chandeliers and a grand spiral staircase. As one of the world’s leading designer lifestyle brands, Tommy Hilfiger celebrates the essence of classic American cool style, featuring preppy with a twist designs. Dozens of guests from the Elite Club attended the event, enjoying light refreshments, cocktails, and a raffle of Tommy Hilfiger products. A skilled Chinese calligraphist at the event wrote auspicious Chinese characters—personalized for each guest—on lucky red envelopes. Ellen Wang, the publisher of Elite Lifestyle Magazine, greeted friends and family from the Elite Club and wished everyone a prosperous 2018, the Year of the Dog.

ost of us are familiar with the dietary benefits of lemons, but did you know that this tiny yellow citrus fruit is also good for the skin and hair? Packed with antioxidants like vitamin C, the juice from fresh lemons can work miracles, doing everything from lightening dark spots on your skin to removing hair product buildup from your scalp. In fact, they can be used in a myriad ways in your daily beauty routine. Lemons can help strengthen nails (just mix the juice with some olive oil) and whiten yellowing nails. They can also help brighten your hair color, soothe dry scalp, and even remedy dandruff. Adding a few drops of lemon juice to your cleanser or soap will help remove dirt and bacteria. The antibacterial properties of lemons also make them a perfect natural alternative to treating acne, and they can help efficiently remove blackheads and combat oily skin. They help to deep cleanse and tighten large pores, as well as refresh the skin. Lemons contain a natural alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), which helps remove dead skin cells and smooth rough skin. The citric acid found in lemons can also gradually lighten dark spots and blemishes, and even overall skin tone. While citric acid is safe for most skin types, you should avoid using lemons if you have sensitive, dry, or cracked skin as it may cause irritation. Also avoid using them on sensitive areas such as the eyes and lips, or on any open skin sores. To avoid irritation, always dilute lemon juice with water (two parts water to one part lemon juice).

MASK TO LIGHTEN DARK SPOTS Dilute the juice from half a lemon with water. Then mix the diluted juice with an egg white, half a tablespoon of almond oil, and 2–3 tablespoons of oatmeal. Apply the mixture to dark spots and leave it on for 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

entists developed in 1993. With high concentrations of exfoliating acids, it eliminates dead skin cells and renews the skin, but without causing irritation or sensitization. With the launch of Glyco Peeling and Glyco Peeling Plus, Natura Bissé was the first company to offer professional results at home—placing a safe, but also highly effective skin-renewal product into the hands of the consumer. When researchers at Natura Bissé discovered the skin-rejuvenating properties of magnetite, they searched far and wide for the best form of magnetite to incorporate into a new anti-aging product. Their quest brought them to a University of Munich biologist who had devoted over a decade to studying a microorganism that naturally generates its own magnetite. Unlike the magnetite found in the earth, the magnetosomes extracted from these microorganisms do not have the same impurities and also penetrate the skin more effectively. “We don’t follow trends just because they’re trends,” Patricia says. Although certain active ingredients may suddenly gain popularity, the product development team refuses to be swept away by the whimsical market current. “Maybe we already have active ingredients that are the equivalent or even better,” she says. “If we really think it's going to provide something different, new, and give an excellent result to our products, maybe we will incorporate it.” Besides searching for more effective ingredients, researchers at Natura Bissé also avidly observe trends in other fields for creative ideas for new skin treatments and experiences. They were the first to marry skin care with cuisine in 2011 with “The Taste of Beauty,” an experience that offers a sublime spa treatment perfectly complemented by the flavors, aromas, and textures in the private, seven-course dinner that follows. At luxury golf resorts, Natura Bissé introduced the Quirogolf massage, which relieves tension with golf balls that are pressed and rolled across the entire body. “Our concept of luxury is not about having material things. It’s about time—to have time to spend your life, to have time to experience things, to have pleasant
sensations,” Patricia says. In February last year, Natura Bissé launched “The Mindful Touch,” which unites a spa treatment with virtual reality and mindfulness. The immersive experience frees people from their bustling daily lives, the bombardment by to-dos, so they can relax and indulge not only their skin but also their minds. “You enjoy yourself, giving yourself time to feel the touch, the products, the textures. And with the mindfulness audio and virtual reality, it’s amazing because you really disconnect,” Patricia explains. A LEGACY OF DIGNITY AND RESPONSIBILITY In 2008, Ricardo Fisas Mulleras passed the mantle to his children, appointing Patricia’s older sister, Verónica Fisas Vergés, as president and CEO, with Patricia and other members of the family heading the different divisions and subsidiaries of the company. From the time she started working at Natura Bissé during college, Patricia has assumed many different roles over the years, including overseeing the company’s American subsidiary in Dallas, before arriving at her current position as head of product innovation. While exploring and researching new areas of potential development, which includes regularly bringing home new

formula samples to try, she juggles her personal life and being a mother of four children. Although the company has gone global, it’s still a relatively tight-knit company with around 300 employees. Patricia says she knows the names of almost all of them. “People are people. We are not numbers,” she says. The company trains its teams at department stores, spas, and hotels to have extensive knowledge of Natura Bissé’s products and their targeted solutions for different skin concerns. Most importantly, it teaches them to truly care for the needs and wants of consumers, rather than seeking to maximize sales. Patricia says that instead of thrusting multiple products onto a customer, it is best to begin with one or two. “Maybe you can see this person has spots, but maybe this customer is not worried about her spots. She's worried about her fine lines and wrinkles. OK, treat the fine lines and wrinkles because it's what she's concerned about. And sample her, maybe, with a product that can work on the spots,” she says. “I prefer going little by little, and they will enjoy it,” she says. With this approach, the company has prospered despite spending only minimal funds on advertising. Patricia says it is what their father always
told them: “Our best advertisement and tool is our product.” Instead of expanding and developing in other fields, Natura Bissé has chosen to focus exclusively on skin care. “There are thousands of makeup brands, thousands of fragrances, and we are not experts. We will never be experts in those areas. So let’s focus on what we really know,” Patricia says. Their philosophy is simple: “Dignity, responsibility, and the quality of the product are the most important,” she says. 可以提

DEDICATION, SACRIFICE, AND TRIUMPH When 3-year-old Nathan stepped onto the ice of one of the former Olympic skating rinks in his hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah, he fell in love almost instantly. “At the end of the session, the Zamboni comes on and cleans the ice, and everyone has to get off. I refused. I threw this huge tantrum,” Nathan shared with a few weeks prior to the Olympics. Like many Chinese immigrants, Nathan’s parents came to the United States with little money, and they worked hard so their five children could flourish. Nathan’s family was unable to afford new skates when he first started, so he used a pair of his sister’s hand-me-downs. When Nathan outgrew them, his father turned to a foundation run by two-time U.S. Olympian Michael Weiss, which offered scholarships to budding skaters. Although Nathan was too young to apply for the scholarship, Michael offered to fund the purchase anyway. And over the next 10 years, Michael’s charity would continue to support Nathan’s figure skating career, sending him up to $75,000 in total, according to . Despite the demands of training, Nathan treasures his time practicing, as he pushes himself to meet ever higher standards. “It’s time where I can always improve on myself,” Nathan says. “When I do something successful in training, I get an adrenaline rush, and I just feel so happy that I did something different.” Through persistent hard work, Nathan mastered difficult techniques like the quadruple jump—the most celebrated maneuver in men’s figure skating and the move that gave him worldwide renown. The difficult trick, called a quad for short, requires skaters to launch into the air and spin four rapid-fire revolutions before landing gracefully back down. At the 2017 U.S. Championships, Nathan became the world’s first figure skater to successfully land five quadruple jumps in one program—a feat once considered impossible. Although quads now seem indispensable to a medal-winning program, American Evan Lysacek managed to secure Olympic gold without performing a single quad just eight years ago. Nathan seems to pull off multiple quads almost effortlessly, but it is extraordinarily taxing to successfully land just one, let alone five in quick succession. Fumbles and falls dot the records of even the world’s best figure skaters. And Nathan was no exception when he stumbled on a quadruple toe loop and fell on his famed quadruple lutz during his short program at the Pyeongchang Olympics. “As much as I tried to deny it, I think I did feel the pressure a lot, thinking about medals and placement and things like that, things that were entirely out of my control,’’ Nathan told reporters after the compe-
tition. “That just tightened me up, made me really cautious on the ice, and that’s not the way to skate.’’ The pressure to win gold had crippled Nathan, but audiences watched with astonishment when he rebounded the next day to land a world record of six quads and receive the highest score for the long program. “I think after having such a disastrous short program and being so, so low in the ranking—lower than I usually ever am—it allowed me to completely forget the results and focus on enjoying myself out on the ice,” Nathan said, “and getting rid of expectations helped a lot.” “The sixth quad was almost a game-time decision. I knew I had nothing to lose,” he said. Precisely because he had nothing to lose, he was able to achieve the greatest triumph. Although he didn’t place, he achieved a spectacular personal victory and made an unprecedented leap from 17th to 5th place. Nathan had regained his confidence and perhaps tapped into that euphoric energy he had described to before the Oly mpic s: “Once the music starts, once you really get into the program, it’s like you go into a completely different world. n Manhattan’s Chinatown, a foodie paradise brimming with scrumptious noodles and mouthwatering dumplings, perhaps no establishment is as legendary as the Nom Wah Tea Parlor. Almost a century ago, Nom Wah was the first dim sum parlor to open in New York City. Since Nom Wah’s relaunch in 2011, flocks of restaurant-goers congregate outside every day, awaiting a taste of Nom Wah’s famed dim sum offerings, from its original “OG” egg rolls to its classic shrimp dumplings. Wilson Tang, Nom Wah’s current owner, is a towering figure with a friendly, youthful face belying his 39 years. Although Wilson grew up in a family of restaurateurs, his Chinese immigrant parents despised the idea of their son working in a restaurant. “‘We do not want you in the restaurant at all. Stay far, far away.’ And I think that’s the immigrant’s mindset,” Wilson said. Toiling away at multiple jobs, they hoped Wilson would end up in a comfortable and stable white-collar position. So that was exactly what Wilson did, studying hard through school to land himself a banking position at Morgan Stanley. But deep down, he always felt a different calling. Wilson’s uncle Wally, Nom Wah’s then-owner, felt it was time to retire and offered ownership to Wilson. “As

When Wilson took over, he decided to keep its quintessential, antique appearance—from the faded red sign outside to the decades-old tables, chairs, and red vinyl booths inside. Tucked away on quiet, winding Doyers Street, Nom Wah is a timeless glimpse into an earlier era. Doyers Street was not always the street it is today. Wilson still recalls the Doyers Street of his youth, dubbed the “Bloody Angle” because it witnessed so many shootings among rival gangs. Now the street is free of violence but filled with historical distinctiveness, preserved by old establishments like Nom Wah.

customers through active promotion on new channels, especially social media. Along the way, he’s created a booming online business for Nom Wah merchandise— think T-shirts, gift cards, and teapots—and launched a curated wine and beer menu. Wilson transformed the dim sum eating experience when he decided to switch out the classic carts for picture-filled menus. At traditional dim sum restaurants, servers push around carts loaded with different dim sum dishes that people pick and choose from. Growing up, Wilson watched as carts clogged walkways, food rolled around getting cold, and people shouted at servers, clamoring to order. In lieu of that cumbersome process, he introduced picture-filled menus and gave restaurant-goers a checklist of options they could mark with a pen. And within minutes, fresh, steaming dim sum would be delivered to the table. Over the past few years, Wilson’s revived Nom Wah has become one of Chinatown’s most famous eateries, attracting crowds of locals, tourists, and even famous celebrities. The restaurant got a publicity boost when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 production crew decided to shoot a scene at Nom Wah for the Hollywood blockbuster. Wilson also opened four Nom Wah sister stores in downtown New York and Philadelphia, each a continuation of the Nom Wah brand with some unique twists tailored for each neighborhood. FORGING AHEAD These days, Wilson juggles time at his various Manhattan locations, offering mentorship to up-and-coming restaurateurs, donating time and food to different charitable causes, and spending time with his wife and two toddlers.

Wilson plans to make sure Nom Wah keeps to its roots, combining affordable prices with delicious flavors. All the dishes are between $5 and $10, in accordance with Wilson’s philosophy to “underpromise, overdeliver.” Growing up, Wilson was ingrained with a spirit of hard work as he watched his father work multiple jobs, every day of the week. At age 14, Wilson started working part-time jobs too, from pushing grocery handcarts for a restaurant supply business to delivering messages and mail for a bank. He hopes to instill this ethos in his children as well as the younger generation of restaurant entrepreneurs. “I encourage my younger Asian-Americans to work hard, to try to figure out what they need to do to make a great restaurant, and to make a great menu, a more creative menu,” Wilson said. “Don’t get discouraged by pessimism or people that aren’t facing upward.”

hen a client from the West Coast came to Dorothee Junkin Design Studio, she was in need of a suitable second home in New York City for her busy, bicoastal lifestyle. The 3,800-square-foot loft she had purchased was ready for a complete renovation, and as lead designer Junkin saw, it had everything needed to become an airy, relaxing sanctuary: high ceilings, opportunity for a sweeping, contemporary floor plan, and the texture of history. Soon after Junkin completed her vision for the home, the design won the 2017 American Architecture Award for Apartment Interior Design. The client’s original brief—“Open space. Contemporary. Serene”—sent the project, scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2018, away from strong patterns and bold colors and toward satisfying materiality and natural textures. In the master bathroom, Nero Marquina and Calacatta marble, both from Italy, wrap the space in timeless glamour while calming the mind and senses. The custom, freestanding sculptural soaking tub is carved from a solid block of marble. Here, the play of dark and light finishes is achieved with black brushed wenge cabinetry. High contrast is a feature throughout the home and handled uniquely from room to room. The master bedroom is a bastion of relaxation, with a wallcovering from Calico simulating a vast stone headboard, a sofa by Vladimir Kagan, and a custom bed. An abundance of natural light complements the room’s sublime simplicity. Entertaining came high on this client’s list of priorities, and Junkin’s fulfillment of the request paid off handsomely. For a client who values serenity and openness above almost all else, this peaceful inner sanctum of a master bedroom was born.
warm brass accents. The kitchen’s backsplash is bookmatched Italian Pietra Grigio marble. The great room contains a tactile connection to the loft’s past: the wood beams and columns. As the timbers had withstood some damage from the ravages of time, they were lovingly restored where needed using reclaimed wood. The result is another layer of calming, yet interesting, texture that adds to the home’s character.
One of the project’s most prominent features is a slender blackened steel staircase leading to the private rooftop. Initially, the staircase was perceived as a spatial challenge since it couldn’t be put anywhere except prominently in the center of the great room. But Junkin turned it into a feature design element, and now the staircase acts as a partial screen between the dining and living areas, merging necessity and composition by subtly defining the large space.

ot just anyone can look at a simple concrete building on a Mexican hillside and have a vision worthy of the 2017 American Architecture Prize. But Sergio Portillo isn’t just anyone. His work has been featured on magazine covers worldwide since he established his firm in 2014. The award-winning Villa Jardín, or “Garden Home,” is one of his latest and most noteworthy, accomplished with landscape designers Integración Orgánica. Villa Jardín began its life as no more than a rectangular footprint with views across a leafy, placid canyon outside Mexico City. By the time it was complete, it had become an homage to the natural world and to modern indoor-outdoor living, with multiple sanctums of activity and contemplation, one for each part of the day. It earned the American Architecture Prize for Outdoor Designs by creating, as its maker says, “a dialogue between the constructed building and the environment.” It’s a conversation that will go on and on as long as its residents live there, thanks to three convertible walls placed throughout: an interior sliding accent wall that can close the kitchen off from the formal areas; glazing that opens to create a grand indoor-outdoor living area; and a small, trellis-like privacy screen that can convert a cube-shaped outdoor sitting area into the wraparound patio’s pièce de résistance, or slide closed to form a private sanctuary accessible from the bedrooms. While certain forms divide the space, others, like the vertical boxed garden adorning the entire northern exterior wall, unify it. Its boxes are built from reclaimed wood from the shoring system used in the home’s construction. While the vertical garden seems to extend the canyon’s vegetation all around the home,

Close the glazed sliding doors and sit in the shade inside to beat the noontime heat. But, because of Mexico City's high elevation, the temperature is usually mild yearround, giving this villa's outdoor living areas the advantage when it comes to deciding which room to spend the most time in.

its repetition of rectangles echos the graphic nature of the patio roof and keeps the ambience chic and modern, yet relaxed. The wall of foliage sets the stage for three elemental features that provide identity and transition from terrace to terrace. The first is a pool of water that symbolizes purification and provides soothing movement and sound. The second is a garden of energy stones. The third is a vertical vegetable garden in the farthest sanctuary, designed to blend the gully’s natural vegetation with the living space.
Villa Jardín’s private nooks make for excellent midday or evening escapes, but there’s only one place to be when the sun is setting over the hills and painting the sky: the lower terrace, a few steps below the main living area. This terrace provides access, via a staircase, to the canyon below. Its closer proximity to the natural landscape and entrance into it are more signals of the home’s close relationship to the environment. Without cover, this is the place to soak up the last rays of sunshine and light lamps in preparation for an evening celebration.

raditional Japanese aesthetics define XIV Toba Bettei, a membership resort hotel in Ise-Shima. The Ise-Shima region is located in Japan’s southern Mie Prefecture and consists of the cities of Ise, Toba, and Shima, and the town of Minami-Ise. The area is home to Ise Jingu, Japan's most sacred Shinto shrine and one of its most impressive. The resort overlooks the waters of Ise-Shima, and features a traditional Japanese-style garden with a large pond that creates an illusion of continuity with the sea. The design of the facility expresses the idea of “teioku ichinyo,” a Japanese expression representing the exquisite natural harmony between the building and the garden.

Japanese culture. In Praise of Shadows is an essay on Japanese aesthetics by renowned Japanese author and novelist Junichiro Tanizaki. Paper-framed lamps provide low lighting, and furniture is arranged with a low center of gravity, establishing a low line of sight. Guided by these concepts, the rooms incorporate features of Japanese architecture, using traditional materials and colors to create a new Japanese-style space. Headboards are designed as bedside screens to protect against the wind, while traditional Japanese paper screens and lattices, marked with watermark techniques, allow the light and breeze to gently pass through. The panels on the walls where television storage boards are arranged are overlapped using a 12-layer nesting method, lending them a resemblance to a work of art. Traditional wood, paper, gilt leaf, and lacquer are frequent motifs, and gold, silver, and copper colors join a traditional palette of vermillion, indigo, and mustard-yellow to create a unique Japanese style. The resort is a testament to the time-honored beauty of Japan, and the persistence of its traditional values of harmony and oneness with nature in the modern world.
