DR. SEBAGH Star Power For The Skin Text by Pia-Maria Norris │ Photography by Bill Xie

r. Sebagh, the skin care line founded by Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh, the internationally acclaimed cosmetic surgeon and anti-aging guru to the stars, is capturing the hearts of women around the world. With such global recognition, it is easy to understand why so many women, including celebrities, models, and socialites, flock to his exclusive clinics in Paris and London for his renowned anti-aging treatments and have become such loyal customers of his skin care line. As one of the world’s foremost experts in “age maintenance” and a pioneer of treatments such as Botox and mesotherapy, it was only a matter of time before Dr. Sebagh applied his anti-aging expertise to create products that would enable millions of women to benefit from his regimens on a daily basis. And so, in 2004 the Dr. Sebagh anti-aging skin care line was launched, offering advanced anti-aging products that address specific concerns as well as support and boost the skin’s natural cellular rejuvenation process. “My goal is to create a range of skin care that provides everything that skin needs to look and feel its best, both now and in the future,” Dr. Sebagh says. Using cutting-edge technology, Dr. Sebagh and his team of top scientists have not only excelled in creating superbly potent, effective skin care for the modern woman, but have also sealed Dr. Sebagh’s legacy as one of the “superstars” of the skin care industry.

Text by Pia-Maria Norris │ Photography by Bill Xie

S

pain might not be the first country one immediately associates with luxury skin care. Nonetheless, one of the jewels of the luxury skin care world was born in Barcelona in 1979, conceived by Ricardo Fisas Mulleras. Based on the pioneering concept of natural freeform amino acid technology, Natura Bissé first entered Spanish beauty establishments with five creams targeting different skin needs. By the end of the 1980s, the company had a total of 150 skin care products. By the 1990s, after solidifying its position at home, Natura Bissé entered the United States, where its innovative and efficient formulas quickly captured the attention of the luxury market. The launch of the Glyco Peeling and Glyco Peeling Plus (the first professional strength but completely safe at-home peels) was an instant success, and Natura Bissé was soon given entry to some of the most luxurious American department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and Barneys New York. Success in the United States, in turn, opened the door to the international market, where Natura Bissé gained access to some of the most exclusive spas and department stores around the world. The company’s legacy was sealed in 2000 with the launch of the luxurious anti-aging Diamond Collection, and in 2003 with the launch of the Inhibit Collection, which has been hailed as one of the most efficient cosmetic alternatives to microinjections and other medical aesthetic procedures. Today, after many product and industry awards for its dedication to research and innovation, it is the spirit of its founding principles, a commitment to excellence, that ensures Natura Bissé continues to excel and solidify its position as one of the world’s leading luxury skin care brands.

PRO T

Sun exposure is one of the major reasons for skin aging. Avoiding the sun altogether is virtually impossible, particularly during the summer months, so it is important to take preventive measures to protect the skin. While UVB rays (that cause sunburn) are strongest in summer, UVA rays (that cause wrinkles) remain constant throughout the year, so make sure to protect your skin every day, year-round, regardless of season and weather.

REDEFINING LUXURY The Elegant, Versatile Bag Tailored for Modern Women 精

時尚

English text by Irene Luo | Chinese text by Janet Qiu | Photography by Bill Xie and Senreve

s rising female professionals, Coral Chung and Wendy Wen searched far and wide for the luxury bag to match their bustling lifestyles. Finding none, they decided to craft their own. After being introduced by a mutual friend, the two Stanford business school graduates pioneered Senreve, a premier luxury brand designed precisely for the sophisticated career woman. Together, Coral and Wendy are redefining luxury. Unlike European luxury brands that traditionally target the more leisurely gentlewomen of a bygone age, their brand caters to a new generation of luxury shoppers. “She understands luxury and designer craftsmanship. But she also lives a very busy life. And for something she uses on a daily basis, it can’t just be a decorative item,” Coral says. But that does not mean she would have to sacrifice beauty for functionality. Instead, Senreve marries the elegant craftsmanship of top European luxury brands with innovative versatility to craft a product that promises all, yet sacrifices nothing. With Senreve, the globetrotting female professional can now live and work in style.

Coral first entered the world of luxury goods while working at Prada. Afterward, she learned strategy at Bain & Company and data analytics while working at Medallia in Palo Alto, California. Throughout her professional career, she had struggled with finding an elegant, luxury bag that could also fit her laptop. Upon further thought, she realized this quandary could be transformed into opportunity. Pouring her passion and experience into building Senrenve, Coral captivated investors with her vision and drive. Reflecting on Senreve’s maturation, she said, “it’s like your vision come to life. A year ago there was no bag,” she marvels. It was just an idea, a PowerPoint presentation. Now, hundreds of women traverse the globe with a Senreve bag on their shoulder. Like many of her clientele, Coral is a travel-loving nomad. With her husband, she has journeyed to over 50 countries, from the Maldives to the Dominican Republic. Echoing her bottomless wanderlust, her vision for her company sees no limits. Coral is always brainstorming, innovating, and reflecting on ways to improve both herself and her brand. “I’m like a tiger parent for myself. I always feel like I could do better,” she says. For Coral, the mother of a 4-year-old toddler, Senreve is a labor of love, almost like a second baby. “It’s a piece of you,” she says. “You have to put your heart and soul into it.”

Senreve 's manufacturing partner, a multigenerational family business, has extensive experience in the luxury bag industry, crafting products for top brands like Fendi and Balenciaga.

Through extensive interviews and surveys of hundreds of women, as well as feedback from their burgeoning customer base, Coral and Wendy analyze female preferences and use this data to inform every step of their design. After Senreve released the Maestra to the market, women loved the functionality of the product, but some women told the company that they wanted a bag designed to hold an iPad, not a laptop. Promptly responding to that feedback, Senreve designed a mini version of the Maestra. By harmonizing dichotomies—tradition with modernity, beauty with performance, and modern inno-

TOUCHING HEARTS THROUGH ANIMATION The Story of a Former Disney Artist English text by Irene Luo | Chinese text by Nicole Hao Photography by Joan Liu

ittle Davy Liu was always enchanted by the f luffy white clouds beyond his elementary school window. First he would spot a nose, then some eyes, and soon a beaming lion would emerge, decorated with a massive ice cream cone growing out of its mane. What a stark contrast from the textbook Davy was supposed to read, covered with indecipherable black symbols crowding the page like dead worms. But unraveling them and performing well in school were the keys to future prosperity, or so everyone said. Frustrated and bored, Davy picked up his pencil and started doodling instead. From a young age, drawing was Davy’s refuge, a gateway to limitless possibilities. His passion for art would ultimately launch this f ledgling Taiwanese artist into a blossoming career as an artist and animator, working on blockbuster Disney films like Mulan, Aladdin and The Lion King. And a few years after leaving Disney, he would pioneer his own company—a creative animation studio, dedicated to artistic exploration and emboldening children who resemble his disheartened younger self.

(Above) With this illustration of a dragon, made up of an eclectic array of architecture, Davy placed in the largest national middle school art competition. (Left) Whenever Davy works, he imagines himself as an 8-year-old child, infusing playfulness and curiosity into his creations.

bemoaned his dismal grades, especially in contrast to those of his five older siblings. When he was 13, his parents immigrated with him to the United States, hoping that the American education system might save him. His grades, however, showed no signs of improvement, and he now had to grapple with being the only Asian kid in an alien, English-speaking environment. In the end, a miracle did come, but not in the way his parents had expected. On his first day in class, Davy’s art teacher, Poppy Kincaid, told him he was artistically talented. For the first time in Davy’s life, someone validated rather than demoralized him. “You can do it!” she always reminded him. Invigorated by her support, he started drawing for hours every day after school. After she entered one of his illustrations in the nation’s largest middle school art competition, he won a prestigious award and even received a letter of recognition from then-President Ronald Reagan. This watershed moment transformed Davy’s view of himself and prompted even his parents to see his passion for art in a new light.

DISCOVERING THE ESSENCE OF ANIMATION AT DISNEY While in college, he applied to intern at Walt Disney Feature Animation. Again and again, he failed. But he persevered, and on his fourth try, he beat all the other college art students to one of the eight coveted positions. He was only 19 at the time, and he was also the first ethnically Chinese animator to work for Disney. He was fascinated by the world of animation—a versatile art form, combining emotional storytelling with moving images, dialogue, and music. “This art goes far beyond just 3-D. It spans multiple dimensions,” he marveled. Observing the top animators at Disney, Davy was captivated by their meticulous attention to detail. If they made the tiniest mistake, they would promptly discard their work and start again. Voraciously enthusiastic to learn, Davy sifted through the trash bin after work to find these discarded drafts. To others they 40│時尚精英 ELITE

were garbage, but to him they were priceless troves of artistic brilliance. Over time, Davy developed from a novice animator to one of the main creative forces behind classic films like Mulan and The Lion King. Today, people still often ask him about the Disney animation process. Is there some secret formula to creating that perfect movie? But Davy says there is only one essential ingredient: “In Disney, all the stories—regardless of whether they were about Westerners, Asians, or even aliens—contain one key element: the ability to move people.” Of the many films he has worked on, The Lion King holds a special place in his heart. The original story pitch was nearly tossed out and forgotten like numerous other ideas. But its creators ultimately saw its potential, transforming and breathing life into the storyline to create the “Circle of Life” classic adored by audiences around the world.

Tails, which reinvents classic stories from the Christian canon, retelling them from the perspective of endearing animals at the scenes. In recent years, as he travels around Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China giving talks, he always tells parents, “Don’t mistake diamonds for marbles.” Like the seemingly dull story of The Lion King, every child is a diamond, including Davy the doodler who hated studying, if only given the opportunity to flourish and to dream.

FORGING HIS OWN PATH After three years at Disney, Liu started working at Warner Bros. as an art director. In 1998, he joined Industrial Light & Magic, a visual effects company founded by filmmaker George Lucas, and worked on the production of Star Wars: Episode I and Frankenstein. His illustrations were also featured in prominent publications like Businessweek, Time magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. Despite his enormous success, especially as an ethnically Chinese artist in the Hollywood movie business, Davy felt he had a greater purpose. To the surprise of many, he chose to leave his high-paying career and started his own animation studio, Kendu Films, in 2004. The company name was inspired by his art teacher’s words of encouragement, which remain close to his heart. Davy hopes the stories and animations produced by his studio will instill an “I can do it” spirit of confidence and optimism within the next generation of children. “My mission,” he said, “is to help people, through art, live more beautiful, fulfilling lives.” He is currently working on an animated book series called Invisible

Each detail belies a wealth of culture and history, and promotes an awareness of traditional craftsmanship and tastes from specific regions, cultures, and periods, dating as far back as three millennia. Taking the time to craft the details is, for Molyneux, all about priorities. Each piece, each color, each

material is chosen to bring tranquility and balance to a space. “The key is to know how to edit. I mean there are so many things we love, we cannot have them all. So we have to edit, or somehow be able to concentrate on the very, most important things,” Molyneux said. His mansion in the Le Marais historic district in Paris was built in 1619. It saw every room vandalized during the French Revolution, and it was then divided into apartments. Despite the beauty of his mansion’s exterior, the original entry vestibule, which was the last piece of the home that he bought from former residents, had nothing inside, not a single architectural element to restore. Molyneux recreated the space, adding blue and white tiles to the walls that feature pictures inspired by engravings in the Louvre Museum of historic architectural sites that no longer exist: the Château de Saint-Cloud palace, and the 17th-century fountain garden of Liancourt at the Château de Bénouville, famous for its canals, fountains, waterfalls, and more than 160 water jets. Porcelain shelves on the walls display three antique Chinese zodiac figures from the Victorian period (1850s or 1860s), and each statue is rather large, around three feet tall. The table in the center of the room is supported by carved griffins that act as the wooden legs. Above it all, is an exquisite chandelier. “It’s a mélange, a little bit of everything. I think everything actually comes together in a very nice way,” Molyneux says. Molyneux has created uber-luxury private residences around the world for important clients, including a sheik in Qatar and important families in Europe. About nine years ago, he completed work on a very large property the size of Belgium in northwest Quebec, Canada. He renovated and restored a protected 1920s Italian villa with a Roman swimming pool in its base on the cliffs overlooking the sea in Sorrento. Unfortunately, he will not speak of many of his projects, because he is a guardian of his clients’ privacy. Today, he sits on the boards of The American Friends of Versailles, The French Heritage Society, 44│時尚精英 ELITE

Mahogany and Bone Console with Silver Frieze inspired by the work of one of the earliest exponents of French Neoclassical architecture, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, who used very particular columns made up of cylinder and cube shapes on important buildings. He has beautifully renovated and restored it, filling it with exquisite, beautiful decor. In his garden room, a curving sofa crafted from light-colored teak wood employs a Greek design from the period four centuries before Christ. “It’s a very simple wooden furniture with metal corners, verte-green, a green-blue bronze,” Molyneux explains. The sofa is suitable for outdoor use. Because it is teak, if it is left outside, the wood will change color and become a very beautiful gray. Molyneux drew inspiration from the furniture pieces in the Villa Kérylos, along the shoreline in the south of France near Nice and Monte Carlo. The Villa Kérylos is a Greek-style property that was built by wealthy French archaeologist Theodore Reinach in the early 1900s, designed by an architect who had studied Greek architecture from the second century B.C. Reinach had furniture for the property commissioned after intensively researching furniture and artifacts kept in museums such as the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, and others in Athens and Berlin. Molyneux says his matching reclining armchairs are not part of the ancient Greek design. “We’re going to the 21st century now,” he said, laughing. Molyneux credits French architects Louis Le Vau (1612–1670), Ange-Jacques Gabriel (1698–1782), and Claude-Nicolas Ledoux (1736–1806) for his initial induction into historical styles. Architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux’s work served as inspiration for a striking console Molyneux had commissioned from mahogany and bone with silver frieze. Ledoux was renowned for his columns made up of cylinder and cube shapes, like those Molyneux employed in his console. The console stood for a time framed by a magnificent Chinese lacquer panel on the landing of Molyneux’s former townhouse on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Ledoux was considered a modernist in his time, with his use of neo-Roman and neo-Greek elements, 48│時尚精英 ELITE

but is now considered one of the earliest exponents of French Neoclassical architecture. His most famous building is the Saline Royale d’Arc-et-Senans, a UNESCO monument in France. Specially trained artisans are required to craft Molyneux’s furniture using traditional methods that have stood the test of time. An exquisite writing desk housed in the master bedroom of his château is no exception. The 17th-century tapestry with gold threads in the tabletop was too delicate to hang on a wall, so Molyneux repurposed it, protecting it under the glass of the tabletop and encasing it in the table’s steel frame that resembles carved wood. A pair of twin bronze side tables were based on icons that date to a civilization before both the Greek and Roman empires in the northern part of Rome. They are Etruscan sculptures of feminine figures, and they are supporting a plateau. “They’re very, very beautiful. They look very contemporary, but the original art that they are based upon is from 3,000 years ago,” says Molyneux. He is particularly fascinated by fish skin—the material that has featured in at least two of his tables— sturgeon skin to be precise. “Other people aren’t that interested in it; I’m fascinated by it,” he said, laughing. He commissioned an eye-catching coffee table embellished with a bright blue sturgeon skin top, supported on masculine lion legs. At first glance it appears to be contemporary, but in reality the legs were molded in bronze from a marble sculpture designed in the 1400s or 1500s. “These legs are very typical lion’s rear legs, very Renaissance, when sculpture was enhanced with masculinity,” he says. Molyneux puts himself into everything he designs and says his attention to detail all come down to his priorities, which are the first step of destiny: “When you say, ‘my priorities are these,’ then you really start navigating through a route that takes you somewhere.”

A Mountain Refuge Imbued With Cultural Vitality

English text by Irene Luo Chinese text by Yichun Lin Photography by Anantara Jabal Akhdar

Seated upon a mountainous throne at the edge of a precipice over 2,000 meters above sea level, Anantara Jabal Akhdar Resort shines like a reimagined citadel cradled within the vast and rugged Saiq Plateau in the Sultanate of Oman. Among all the five star resorts of the Middle East, it enjoys the highest views. Designed by Lotfi Sidirahal and his team at Atelier Pod, Anantara Jabal Akhdar Resort is a mountain refuge that not only features breathtaking canyon vistas and opulent infinity pools, but also spotlights the essence of the neighboring region. Its design is an ode to the mountainscape—dotted with pomegranates, wild figs, olive trees, and the area’s renowned damask roses—as well as the region’s rich cultural heritage. Before they started designing, the team first immersed themselves in the local community, exploring the landscape, architecture, and the lifestyles of the villagers. Afterwards, they meticulously imbued the cultural vernacular of the region into their design, bridging contemporary luxury and indigenous elements. The team found inspiration for the resort exterior from the magnificent strongholds of the Nizwa region, renowned as the pearl of the Middle East. “We designed the entrance with the idea of a fort in mind,” Sidirahal said. “The exterior, with its great wooden doors, impressively showcases commanding strength.” With its sandy, earth-colored hue, the resort seamlessly blends with the majestic mountain landscape. Many of the materials used in the construction were extracted from the mountains themselves, including gray Jabel Akhdar stone and beige Nizwa stone. Although difficult to cut, these materials helped create a beautiful aesthetic complementing the surrounding

Gentle and graceful, the resort interior is enriched by lush green terraces, rose bushes, fruit trees, and the twinkling sounds of water flowing through the falaj-inspired waterways. The falaj, meaning “split into parts,” is an ancient system of water irrigation passed down through five millennia of civilization. These water channels fill the resort with the pleasant sound of flowing water. Gently curved arches, beautiful domes, and carved wooden doors embellish the resort and situate it

within the architectural traditions of the region. Throughout the resort, travelers can admire the nature-inspired artwork, Arabic-themed photography, and handmade pottery. Surrounded by the warm, rich colors that permeate the interior design, visitors are filled with a sense of tranquility. A central theme of Middle Eastern architecture is elaborate and repeating geometric or floral patterns like the arabesque. Such ornamental forms appear throughout the resort as seen in the intricate latticework and lantern designs. The hotel rooms are further furnished with antique

Sidirahal and his team also custom designed eighty unique furniture pieces, drawing inspiration from local forts, citadels, and villages. Traditionally, Omanis would sit on cushions or a carpet, so the team had to create much of the furniture from scratch. Sidirahal described their furniture pieces as “contemporary interpretations of traditional Omani design.” They used the base of an Omani chest in their sofa design, for instance, and a doorframe inspired their design of a luminaire. “We tried to continue the Omani design 56│時尚精英 ELITE

EXALTING BALANCE

Finding Peace in Nature’s Unassuming Beauty English text by Irene Luo Chinese text by Ying Han Photography by Ben Rahn / A-Frame

evering quiet harmony rooted in the beauty of nature, the Toronto-based firm superkül designed this graceful residential home in Mulmur, Ontario, Canada. Balanced with its rural surroundings, Compass House is a haven of spiritual resonance, endowing its residents with an elevated experience of nature’s unassuming wonder. Its name, Compass House, alludes to its purpose: to chart a new course for a family that has returned to Canada after an extended stay in the United Kingdom. Located on the great, rocky Niagara Escarpment— known as the ancient “backbone” of North America— Compass House sits in the center of a diverse landscape, surrounded by vast fields to the north and east, a hill to the south, and a forest to the west. The thicket of flora next to the home provides a sense of privacy and doubles as a windbreaker. The all-white exterior of the home evolves with the seasons, allowing the house to stand out distinctly among the verdant greenery during the summer, while fusing with the snowy landscape in the winter. The L-shape design of the house, with two perpendicular wings, partially encompasses a tranquil outdoor courtyard, making it feel expansive yet private. As residents relax in the courtyard, they can absorb the balmy rays of sunlight, gaze at the radiant blue skies, and enjoy the lush and hearty earth. In the living room, the large bifold doors can be opened in the summer, blurring the boundaries between the interior and exterior spaces. The designers of the home were inspired by the 58│時尚精英 ELITE

longhouse, a narrow, elongated architectural form found historically throughout Europe and parts of North America. With this design, all the rooms in Compass House enjoy abundant ventilation and natural light. The designers prudently positioned large windows and skylights to fill the house with warm rays while ensuring the light would not become overly hot or intense. The wooden walls and floors—built with white oak and knotty white cedar—create a sense of warmth and comfort, whereas the white ceilings engender a sense of boundlessness and expansiveness. This juxtaposition mirrors the meeting of land and sky. The design perfectly balances dichotomies—intimacy and expansiveness, light and darkness, earth and sky—giving residents a perfect dose of all. Throughout the design process, Compass House’s architects devoted themselves to creating a sustainable, energy-saving home. They used low-maintenance materials to construct the house, like cement-board siding, aluminum windows, and a steel roof. And they strove to minimize waste while increasing insulation and the flow of natural light into the home. The result is a beautiful, balanced home with the strength to endure the passing of time.

THE CHARLES

Two Decades of Contemporary Chic by B&B Italia Text By Xinyu Lo Photography by B&B Italia

wenty years ago, master Italian furniture designer Antonio Citterio designed the Charles sofa to pay his utmost respect to American designer, architect, and film director Charles Eames, who was renowned for his contributions to modern architecture. Citterio presented his sofa with the elements and spirit of Eames. The Charles sofa has a slim base and light legs with inverted-L-shaped die-cast aluminium feet. It is an innovative convertible system in which different elements can make different compositions: two- or three-seat sofas, sofas with a chaise longue addition, and a corner sofa. A classic from its inception, the Charles has become a best-seller and has inspired bedroom furniture, outdoor furniture, and other B&B Italia furniture series. To celebrate the 20th birthday of the Charles sofa, B&B Italia is introducing two new sets of innovative fabrics: one in gray-blue, and the other in orange-red. The essential elements of the Charles sofa are contemporary, light, and optimized for comfort, and have earned the admiration of many in the design world.

SUMMER SWEET SPOTS Text By Xinyu Lo

A pond-like natural swimming pool in South Yorkshire, Great Britain (BIOTOP).

Tucci air lounge hammock

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BIOTOP AND TUCCI

THE POOL REINVENTED Imagine coming home to a natural swimming pool filled with lotus plants. Manmade “Natural swimming pools” first gained popularity in Germany in the 80s, and have spread through Europe and North America in recent years. All natural swimming pools have a clearly defined swimming area and constructed wetlands (regeneration zone) that consist of deep water, shallow, and marginal zones. Instead of chemicals, the pool makes use of plants, which are rooted hydroponically in the regeneration zone to create a biological filtration system that balances impurities and bacteria. A natural swimming pool can be designed in almost any shape, and some even resemble traditional chlorine swimming pools in terms of the shape. A natural swimming pool maintains harmony with the environment, so adults and children can unwind in pristine lake-like surroundings. The recreational aspects aside, a natural pool conserves energy and water, and also takes less of a toll on the environment. A traditional swimming pool requires the water to be replaced periodically and the chemicals concentrations adjusted, whereas the ecological pool needs to be filled just once.

GARDENING Landscaping around the exterior of your home can create beautiful pockets of color and self expression. Studies have shown that gardening can effectively relieve stress and anxiety, reduce cortisol levels, and decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and many other stress-related diseases. In addition, 30 minutes of gardening can burn off the same amount of body fat as 30 minutes of moderate calisthenics.

KELLY WEARSTLER California-based designer Kelly Wearstler defined a natural and organic palette of sandstones, shell pinks, rusts and moonstone grays to help shape an imaginative modernist dialogue with the sea in the redesign of this four-level Southern California coastal escape owned by an A-list actress. “The most important aspect of a room is the spirit it conjures and art is a favorite way of mine to imbue a room with mood, color and inspiration while taking you on a spirited adventure,” Wearstler said. Marine metaphors sophisticatedly punctuate the design, with vintage 1960s Italian mohair chairs representing birds on the sand, and chrysanthemum root from Hong Kong acting as the home’s elegant “driftwood.” A two-story, 17-foot carved ceramic fireplace by local artist Stan Bitters commands the living room, which, like the rest of the house, is layered in warm, honey-colored wood paneling that evokes a sense of being on a classic sailing yacht. Touches of vintage glamour accent the 3,500 square-foot space, from a 1960s Italian brass-and-gunmetal chandelier to a set of Warren Platner chairs.

VICENTE WOLF New York City-based interior designer Vicente Wolf said the relationship between art and interior design is symbiotic; both are able to stand alone, but when put together they should be complementary. Whether the art or the interior is traditional or contemporary, juxtaposition between both styles can help unify a room. “In creating this bedroom, I tried to blend together different cultures and periods. I felt that it was important to have a strong element in the center of the room, hence the usage of the Chinese screen, which is balanced with an 18th-century mirror leaning against the wall,” Wolf said. “I wanted to bring elements which spoke of the past, but could be interpreted in a modern way.” For example, Wolf chose to modernize a classic Chinese Minister hat chair by having it crafted from stainless steel, allowing the piece to be a sculptural, but still functional piece of furniture. The desk, from Burma, is an Anglo-Indian piece from the late 19th century. The bronze Ikebana fish on top of the desk is Japanese from the 18th century. These objects play against a contemporary bed designed by Wolf. A mixture of Asian, European, and modern furniture, in what is a very traditional room, bring the room into the present, creating a cohesive, timeless space.

JESSICA LAGRANGE Selecting artwork for a client’s home is always personal. Chicago-based interior designer Jessica Lagrange said that some of her clients request that she design an entire space around a single work of art, while others prefer to add artwork as the final flourish to a room. “We collaborate with consultants when choosing art for clientele but at the end of the day our clients’ emotional responses to a piece determines whether it stays or goes,” she said. For this vintage home in Chicago, Lagrange wanted something historical, yet fresh, and completely unique. She turned to Gracie Wallcovering, a family-run furniture and textile business established in 1898 by Charles R. Gracie in New York City. Gracie began importing hand-painted Chinese textiles in the 1930s. Today the family creates their own wallcovering at studios in China and the U.S., specializing in a technique they call Papier-Chinois. “A team of 15 artists in New York employed Papier-Chinois to produce this artwork for our client,” Lagrange said. Using water-based paint in shades of white, yellow, teal and pink, the artists hand-painted the company’s “Slate Forest” design onto seven handmade paper panels. “We chose this design because the decorative flora and fauna are elegant yet whimsical,” she said. Lagrange often returns to Gracie because the designs’ intricacies are breathtaking and entirely customizable. Clients can opt to have the panels reinforced, so the artwork is moveable should they ever change residences.

LO CHEN

Lo Chen

New York City-based designer Lo Chen believes incorporating artwork in living spaces is one of the best ways to reflect one’s personality. Furthermore, the process of selecting art enables everyone to be part of the interior design process. “Regardless of the size, price, or style of the chosen artwork, the most important thing is to adapt to the taste of the client and designer; so that the interior space will reflect its uniqueness,” Chen said. “Just like women choosing the right jewelry to reveal their beauty and temperament, artwork is the soul of the interior space.” Creating subtle movement, Chen made this elegant, serene interior space vibrate with mobile ceiling lighting, a hanging bubble chair, and playful artwork on the coffee table. Chen masterfully complemented the setting, layout, and views provided by the apartment by bringing out all the best features with harmonious contrasts and colors.

I like the educational aspect of antiques; it’s one reason I teach. I see objects as a window into the past. And the way I see it, the past is something that we own. And we should understand it and enjoy it. And we can do it successfully by looking at art and objects, but particularly objects.” Nicholas Dawes, Heritage Auctions VP and Antiques Roadshow appraiser

Nicholas Dawes is an appraiser on Antiques Roadshow, which airs on PBS, vice president of special collections at Heritage Auctions in New York City, and a faculty member of the Parsons School of Design.

NICHOLAS DAWES Objects as Windows into the Past and Opportunities for the Future

English text by Sarah Matheson Chinese text by Ming Yi Photography by Heritage Auctions and Xuehui Zhang

icholas Dawes never gets too attached to his possessions. An antiques dealer for 25 years, he used to say that everything he owns is for sale. “I would say that’s normal for a dealer.” An expert appraiser with Antiques Roadshow since the first season 21 years ago, Dawes is an auctioneer and has more than 40 years’ experience in the antiques and auction industries. He says that aside from the beauty, quality, and educational aspects, art and objects can make great investments, either in the short term or over a longer period. “In other words, think like a dealer. Dealers buy for investment, they buy to make a living; they know exactly what to pay for something because they can sell it for a little bit more or a lot more. And I’m not against that. I believe that now there is a great opportunity to buy and sell objects. Or to buy objects and keep them for investment,” he says. Dawes is vice president of special collections at Heritage Auctions in New York City, and a faculty member of Parsons School of Design, where he has taught courses in American and European history and luxury marketing since 1984. He offers very simple advice for investing in antiques and other speciality items: Furnish and decorate your home with things of value. “You do not have to spend more money than you would in a store. You can buy furniture, objects, painting, art, decor, anything, plates and knives and forks—everything that you use can be bought with a view to the long-term value of it. Buying at auction can be very successful.” His advice goes against some industry conventions:

“Most people in the arts and antique world say, ‘Buy what you like and don’t worry about value.’ I disagree. I think you should always have one eye on the investment potential of what you buy. I think it’s prudent and sensible.” Dawes was born and educated in England. His mother was an antiques dealer, and he started trading objects at age 12. “I loved the concept of buying things for this and selling them for that; it was just great,” he recalls. Dawes moved to the United States in 1979, and he worked as a specialist and auctioneer at Phillips in New York for four years. During that time, he was promoted to head the European Ceramics, Asian, and 20th Century departments. In the late ’90s, he worked at Sotheby’s as an auctioneer and a vice president. He has published four books about antiques and objects, and every summer he takes part in filming for Antiques Roadshow. “I love the educational aspect, the opportunity to tell either one person face-to-face or a whole audience if it gets on TV, something that they wouldn’t necessarily be able to see, or something that they would not know… and you can do that through books, but people don’t read books very often, so if you can do it in front of 10 million people it’s fantastic,” he says, laughing. His four books include one on Lalique glass in 1986, one on Victorian majolica ceramics in 1989, one on art deco collectibles with Judith Miller in 2005, and one on automobile hood ornaments, which were popular with wealthy car owners around 1920. In terms of trends in antiques and objects today, he says Chinese scholar’s objects are very respectable antiques to own. “I believe that America is still a great source for Chinese art and objects. Particularly those made in the 19th century, toward the end of the Qing Dynasty, when there was a large amount of export to this country, great quality things.” He has passed the family passion for objects and art to the eldest of his three sons, who is a vice president in Sotheby’s art department in New York. “I do like things that represent a certain period in history, a certain point in time, because you can learn so much from them,” Dawes says. “I see objects as a window into the past. And the way I see it, the past is something that we own. And we should understand it and enjoy it. And we can do it successfully by looking at art and objects, but particularly objects.” 80│時尚精英 ELITE

I think you should always have one eye on the investment potential of what you buy. I think it’s prudent and sensible. In other words, think like a dealer. Dealers buy for investment, they buy to make a living; they know exactly what to pay for something because they can sell it for a little bit more or a lot more.” Nicholas Dawes, Heritage Auctions VP and Antiques Roadshow appraiser

Offering a deconstructed take on traditional dishes with rare ingredients, the innovative menu at minibar rotates with the seasons. Dishes such as Coconut Cuttlefish, in which the fish is sliced so perfectly that it resembles coconut, and little pink piggy-shaped meringues in “mud” are designed to thrill each of the senses. Adding to the luxury of the experience, as each dish arrives at the table, servers explain the concept behind it, the traditional techniques used to create it, and the combination of ingredients. Adjacent to the Chef’s Counter lies José’s Table, a private dining room where an exclusive dining experience awaits a party of up to six guests. José’s Table serves Andrés’s newest creations, as well as unique and rare wine pairings. Beverage pairing options range from $115 to $195, while custom premium pairings start at $500.

May 2014. He has published three books on Spanish and Spanish-American cooking. As a television personality, Andrés has produced and hosted food programs for Spanish-speaking audiences, and defeated chef Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America in 2007. He was a judge on Top Chef in 2010, and guest judge and mentor on The Taste in 2013. The East Coast can look forward to a little more of Andrés’s flavor in coming years, as he prepares to launch a 32,000-square-foot Spanish food court inside New York’s luxury Hudson Yards complex, which is still under development. The food court will be similar to chef Mario Batali’s Eataly, located a dozen blocks away in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. Andrés is also preparing to open his first New York restaurant this summer, inside 444 Park Avenue South, near Korea Town in Manhattan. This restaurant is in partnership with French designer Philippe Starck and sbe hospitality CEO Sam Nazarian.
