FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS NEED MORE ROLE MODELS MOVING PAST TOKEN NEDS, MAKING ROLE MODELS MORE VISIBLE AND CALLING ON MEN TO CHAMPION THE CAUSE WILL HELP OPEN RETAIL UP TO A NEW GENERATION OF ENTREPRENEURIAL WOMEN
T
HERE IS A HUGE AMOUNT of female talent out there that we are just not embracing. We’re seeing hugely competent women leaving large corporations because they hit the glass ceiling and are not able to fulfil their potential. That’s tragic, both for companies and the economy. The business case for better female representation on boards makes it a no-brainer: if you look at the figures, businesses that have more gender-diverse boards vastly outperform those that don’t. In my 35-year-career, I’ve contributed £1.5bn to the UK economy and I am certain that there are many other women out there that would have a similar impact. Retail can be better at embracing female talent than many industries. For example, Ronan Dunne, the CEO of Telefonica UK, is very supportive of women in business and smaller retailers like Jigsaw, the fashion retailer, do it very well. Small to mid-sized businesses that are very consumer-focused also tend to excel at this because they recognise that 70% of those we employ in retail and 70% of those making purchasing decisions are women. But, despite this,
IT’S IMPERATIVE THAT WE HAVE FEMALE REPRESENTATION UP ON STAGES, IN THE MEDIA, IN ALL OF THESE IMPORTANT ARENAS
Insight First-hand experience from high-profile entrepreneurs
there are still many larger businesses in the retail space that are struggling with board equality and failing to recognise the amazing female talent they have in front of them. So what can we do to change this? Often many businesses’ strategy is to put a token female NED on a company’s board but every woman I know wants to achieve her place on the board for her achievements and ability, not because of tokenism. Additionally, going down that road results in us ending up with these NED superwomen who hop from one board to another. Instead, businesses should be focusing on organically growing talent and helping women ascend the ranks. If they really want to give women confidence, they need to create a culture that demonstrates they genuinely care about and recognise female talent. But it’s not only within the businesses themselves that progress can be made. Tackling social conditioning also plays a big part here. When my daughter was five, I took her to one of my speeches: I wanted her to see that this is normal and not just something that men do. It’s imperative we have female representation up on stages, in politics, in the media and in all other important arenas. Because that’s what makes up-and-coming women feel that there is an opportunity for their talent to be celebrated. Lastly, we need men to be agents of change and to champion this. It isn’t just a women’s issue: it’s an everyone issue. Fathers, more than anybody, need to be championing this change if they want their daughters to have the best start in life that they possibly can. I urge men to talk about the business case for embracing female talent and inspiring change with their own actions. That will go a long way to help change perceptions and start to address gender inequality. JULY 2016 ELITEBUSINESSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

audwell was aware of his entrepreneurial and creative streak even as a child, engaging in schemes like growing worms in a box under his mother’s bed to sell to anglers and flogging motorcycle clothing – a business so successful that the manufacturer eventually blocked his supply after complaints from competitors. But it was in the mid-1980s, when operating a car dealership in Stoke, that he turned a business problem into a business opportunity. Ever proactive, Caudwell would go looking for cars for customers if he didn’t have them in stock. One of the sources of these cars was auctions – Caudwell would see a car about to come through and then phone a prospective
18
customer to see if they were interested. However, there was a challenge: there was one payphone but lots of car dealers, which resulted in many missed sales. He’d heard about mobile phones but knew little about them. After doing some preliminary research, Caudwell tried to buy one direct from the manufacturer, and was quoted a price of £1,600. The entrepreneur managed to negotiate a deal on two models for £1,350 each but there was one catch: the manufacturer would only shake on the deal if Caudwell became a dealer, which required him to buy 26 phones. Caudwell agreed and it took him nine months to sell all his stock. Things were about to pick up, though. By the time he sold Caudwell Group in 2006 – the retail arm of which was monikered Phones 4u – the business was selling 26 phones a minute. It employed 10,000 people around the world and was turning over £2.25bn a year. Its sale to Providence Equity Partners and Doughty Hanson & Co fetched £1.5bn. Since 2006, while he has remained involved in business – including sectors such as marine, aviation, property and wealth management – his prime focus has been charitable and philanthropic work. Indeed, Caudwell has pledged to give a significant part of his wealth to good causes.

iven that Notonthehighstreet.com, the online retailer, provides a platform for over 5,000 partners and small businesses to sell more than 200,000 original products, it’s hard to imagine that this successful business has ever faced any difficulties. However, in the first year after Tucker and her cofounder Sophie Cornish launched the gift website they realised that they were going to run out of money and desperately needed to secure finance. The situation could have turned dire as the usual small business finance channels would not provide the required investment. However, salvation came in the form of funding from a VC firm and Notonthehighstreet.com has gone from strength to strength ever since. Refusing to relinquish quality for the sake of quantity has enabled this Elite Business cover star to grow her startup at an impressive speed. By 2015, the business had reached a turnover of £156m, the same year as she and Cornish released their book Shape Up Your Business. And it seems this is only the beginning. Looking back on the years that have gone by since she launched the company from her own kitchen, Tucker will reveal her inspirations for starting and growing the company, as well as providing an invaluable insight into how entrepreneurs can successfully pitch for investment.

Having gone from a tenement in Glasgow’s East End to the House of Lords, Baroness Michelle Mone’s story should serve as an inspiration to entrepreneurs of every stripe
L
isted as one of the top three female entrepreneurs in the UK – not to mention being recognised by the Queen with an OBE and the government with a peerage for her contribution to the lingerie industry – Mone has built a hugely successful career on giving today’s women what they want. Ultimo was born in 1996. Whilst attending a dinner dance, Mone wore a very uncomfortable cleavage-enhancing bra and had a lightbulb moment: she was going to invent the most comfy bra on the market. The company has since gone from strength-to-strength, developing beyond the original umbrella of Ultimo to encompass 13 patented ‘miracle’ inventions and brands, including Ultimo Bridal, Ultimo Swimwear, Ultimo Shapewear and joint venture lines like Adore Moi for Debenhams. Other launches include UTan and USculpt, both of which have been well received by retailers and beauty buyers alike. Because of this, her success has soared. Not only was Ultimo the first UK
lingerie brand to debut on the catwalk at New York Fashion Week in 2009 but it has also opened ‘shop in shops’ within Debenhams in key cities throughout the UK and landed a mammoth deal with F&F, Tesco’s clothing range. Over the years, Ultimo has established contracts with a string of high-profile models and celebrities including Penny Lancaster, Rachel Hunter and Luisana Lopilato. Hardly surprising then that the underwear tycoon has established herself as one of Scotland’s biggest exports; in 2000, she won the World Young Business Achiever Award at the Epcot Centre, Florida and Business Woman of the Year at the Corporate Elite Awards in London. Her experience also made the bra baroness the perfect choice to lead the government’s review on how to support startups and how to overcome hurdles budding entrepreneurs may face in impoverished areas. She’s also a popular media personality, having appeared on Comic Relief Does the Apprentice and Celebrity MasterChef.

aving successfully launched, grown and subsequently sold Pacific Direct, Morgan is now sharing her experience with the next generation of entrepreneurs. When Morgan’s father went bankrupt, it meant the end to her aspirations of going to university. Instead, she found herself leading a sales team across six different countries by the age of 21 and launching her own business, Pacific Direct, at the age of 23.
22
Having revolutionised the hotel amenities industry, Pacific Direct was exporting to 110 countries around the globe in 2008, the same year Morgan sold the business for £20m. Unwilling to rest on her laurels, Morgan has kept busy after selling the company. Not only has Morgan outlined her secrets to success in the book More Balls Than Most and been a part of the The Apprentice: You’re Fired panel but she has also launched her new business: Company Shortcuts. Drawing on her experience, the company specialises in sales-growth acceleration for entrepreneurs with ambition and business leadership development for CEOs. Morgan particularly enjoys transformational opportunities building outstanding results. She does not settle for mediocrity. In addition to sharing her advice with entrepreneurs, Morgan is also drawing on her experience for her new role as an export ambassador for UK Trade and Investment, the department working with businesses based in the United Kingdom to assist their success in international markets.

MARK FOSTER Olympic swimmer & entrepreneur, FitSteps
You may know him from his glittering sporting career – or perhaps from his twirling round the Strictly dance floor – but Olympian Mark Foster is also a motivational speaker, TV presenter, blogger, entrepreneur and a model with a stash of stories up his sleeve

fter kicking off his career aged 16 at the 1986 Commonwealth Games, Mark Foster went on to do his country proud for 23 years, becoming Britain’s most decorated male swimmer, winning 47 major international medals, breaking eight world records and being crowned World Champion a total of six times. Since retiring from swimming, Foster has become a familiar face on television, presenting alongside Clare Balding during the 2012 Olympic Games and popping up on Countdown, Question of Sport, Come Dine With Me and Celebrity Juice for the Sports Relief Special. But it’s perhaps his appearance on the 2008 series of Strictly Come Dancing that helped the British public get to know the real Mark Foster, revealing his sense of humour and big personality. The series also sparked a foray into the world of business. Inspired by his dancing experience, the Olympian teamed up with Strictly professionals Natalie Lowe and Ian Waite in 2014 to form FitSteps, an enjoyable dance and fitness programme that fuses the graceful steps of ballroom with the up-tempo pace of Latin dance. He hasn’t hung up his swimming cap by any means though. As well as mentoring swimmer James O’Shea for the 2012 Paralympic Games, his passion for social justice has seen him set up the Mark Foster Swimming Academy for aspiring young swimmers and lend his support to a number of charities, including the Anaphylaxis Campaign, the UK charity for people with severe allergies; WellChild, a children’s charity; and Battersea Dogs Home. When he’s not doing the two-step or modelling for brands like Ted Baker, Foster’s long list of achievements makes him a sought-after motivational speaker and blogger for the Huffington Post. With a treasure trove of stories amassed over his diverse career, you don’t want to miss this session by the sportsman-turned-entrepreneur. SEPTEMBER 2016 | ELITEBUSINESSLIVE

C
hampions of Small Business is hosting four speed-networking events during the show. It’s a fullon, fast-paced, face-to-face way of introducing yourself to new people, fresh opportunities and potential future relationships – whether you’re looking for customers, suppliers or even jointventure partners. Whatever you’re presenting, make it snappy: you’ll have two minutes to say your piece before the roles are reversed, so make sure you come armed with plenty of cards and a well-honed pitch. Once that time’s up, it’s on to the next contact. A bottle of water is optional but there’s a chance you might need it by the end of the session. Come down to the sponsored networking area to take part and maybe even meet your next client.
