Her delicate look, slender frame and gentle demeanour cloak her single-mindedness – she wants to make good movies and excel in her roles, and she will pull out all the stops to achieve her dreams. Born in 1980, Zhang had a stint with the Fujian TV station in her hometown after graduating from a teacher training school. She then moved to Beijing in search of greater opportunities, and was discovered by a talent scout who lined up some advertising assignments for her. In 1997, she was admitted to the filmmaking department at The Central Academy of Drama (CAD). At the same time, she attended classes at Beijing Foreign Studies University and went to New Zealand to learn English.

No complaints As time goes on, Zhang has learned not to complain. In the past, if things had not gone her way, she would have demanded: “Why can’t it be done? I have said it time and again.” Now she would say: “I would still like it this way. Could you do that?” Zhang believes a different way of saying the same thing imparts a completely different energy, adding: “Complaining is not helpful. It gives off bad energy. What for?” She likes warrior women and concedes she’s “the type who can self-heal after getting hurt.” “I rarely share my troubles with friends. It’s not that I don’t believe in my friends, but I feel that I’ll have to deal with it myself eventually. I prefer dealing with it sooner rather than later. I always remind myself to face it, accept it, solve it and put it away.” She admits she’s still got more to learn, but says she has one important message to impart: “As a woman, you have to love yourself. Only if you love yourself can others love you. This is the truth.”

Master Control is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s flagship collection. Each timepiece has to undergo 1,000 hours of stringent testing before release. On the collection’s 25th anniversary, three iconic designs have been reinterpreted, using the retro-sector dial to set them apart. The blue-black tone is set off by the blue leather strap, while the blue cutout hands, indices and date stand out on the silvery white dial. The simplest version, Master Control Date, is offered at $7,300, which is highly accessible for a stainless steel watch featuring a Jaeger-LeCoultre automatic date mechanism. The Master Chronograph, slightly pricier at $10,300, sports a refreshing twotone sector dial and light blue indices. Master Geographic, at $12,200, is priced at the top end, but still presents great value for it features the brand’s signature time-zone complication. The city names are in blue, and the day-night indicator next to the hometime indicator is subtle. The sector dial is a neat new look for the Geographic. While these three special-edition watches are not stated as limited editions, they are only being manufactured this year.

Of all things in nature, the peacock is one of the most stunning and majestic species. Bulgari loves the glamour and the spirit of the peacock, and takes inspiration from it for its luxury jewelry watches. A fan-shaped mosaic depicts the beauty of peacock feathers. Hand-painted peacock motifs and diamonds add depth to the fan-shaped feathers. At the heart of the Divas’ Dream Tourbillon Skeleton is the brand’s proprietary Calibre BVL 208 skeleton tourbillon handwinding mechanism. The tourbillon forms a part of the peacock in the bottom half of the dial. The openwork dial is sprinkled with stars, creating a picture of an exquisite garden. The 37-millimetre case is in rose gold. The fan-shaped lugs are unique. The stars, bezel and lugs are adorned with a total of 127 diamonds weighing a total of 2.14 carats. It is limited to 50 pieces. There are two other diamond peacock watches in the Bulgari collection, one in rose gold and the other in white gold. Both feature a 37-millimetre case and are powered by a Calibre BVL 191 automatic mechanism, with a 42-hour power reserve. Without the tourbillon, the dials provide a bigger canvas for showing off the mosaic setting of the peacock feathers. The white gold version representing the night is characterized by a starry night sky against the aventurine glass backdrop. It shines with 135 diamonds totalling 1.96 carats. The peacock itself features 14 shades of blue and green that takes 20 hours to apply. The blue tone is carried through by the dark blue alligator strap and the sapphire-set winding crown. (Approx. $38,000) The day version is bright with gold, featuring a 18-karat rose gold case, dial and hands. The sunny shade casts warmth on the motherof-pearl dial, on which a green and blue peacock, with a touch of rose gold and diamonds, proudly stands. As with the night version, it features 135 diamonds totalling 1.96 carats. (Approx. $36,500)

After broad research, this author has concluded that “check” refers to horizontal and vertical stripes of equal width and spacing, intersecting to form equal-sized squares. “Tartan” refers to the pattern formed by horizontal and vertical stripes of different widths, and is the pattern of Scottish kilts. As for “plaid”, it refers to horizontal and vertical stripes creating varied patterns. While the horizontal stripes can be of a defined width, the vertical stripes vary in width. Burberry’s September collection makes use of the tartan, or what the brand refers to as “vintage check”. “Tartan, meet check” is the main theme of Burberry designer Christopher Bailey’s newest creations. The tartan pattern has already been used extensively by Bailey. So how does this new creation show innovation? Popular Russian fashion designer Gosha Rubchinskiy invited Burberry to collaborate on the design of several check-patterned shirts. This project may have helped broaden Bailey’s creative horizon. The September collection trends youthful and casual, like the four tartan baseball caps, which are very colourful and bright, and makes one look at least 10 years younger.

Some 15 to 20 years ago, dining in Vancouver basically came down to a choice between popular chain eateries and high-end restaurants, with not many alternative choices. But it seems we are witnessing the beginning of a new chapter … call it the ‘New Yorkification’ of Vancouver, if you will. Neighbourhood restaurants with intimate atmospheres and highly imaginative cuisine are proliferating in the city, most of them run by young chefs trained abroad. There are more first-class yet relaxed dining experiences characterized by open kitchens, creative ingredient combinations, low-profile but eye-catching decors, attentive and genuinely friendly servers and chefs that interact with customers.

Mak N Ming is one such restaurant. One of the first interesting twists you will notice is the absence of an à la carte menu. There is only a Chef’s Menu at $78 per person, which features six courses, or the Demi Menu, which features three courses at a reasonable $54 per person and which changes every two or three months.
A Restaurant Prodigy Comes Home The second interesting aspect is the mixed background of the married co-owners. Amanda (Ming) Cheng is a Vancouver-born Chinese-Canadian pastry chef, who studied at the Culinary Institute in New York. Chef Makoto (Mak) Ono was born in Winnipeg, the son of Japanese immigrants. “Makoto won a restaurant competition early in his career,” boasts wife Amanda. “Soon after that, he opened a Japanese restaurant in Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics.” Then Makoto’s business partner offered him an opportunity to open a restaurant in Hong Kong. Perhaps it was fate, for “that’s where Makoto and I met,” Amanda says. “I opened a dessert bar in Hong Kong, just above his restaurant.” Later on, the couple wound up their businesses in Hong Kong and moved to Canada, eventually landing at Pidgin Restaurant in Gastown, before opening their own eatery.

Western Classicism Meets the Avante Garde East When entering Mak N Ming, the two rectangular pieces of grey velvet hanging at the entrance doorway may give you a vague feeling that this is an Asian restaurant. Once inside, you are greeted by a contemporary Scandinavian palette of pale blonde wood, hard-backed, front-facing booths and polished concrete floors. It’s a very serene space that is upscale, but not intimidating. The interiors were designed by Scott and Scott, a local architectural firm. “We didn’t tell them to do anything specific,” Ono says. “They came up with the idea of a clean and minimalist interior.” As for clientele, Cheng says, “We have more regulars than newbies, actually. They keep coming back to taste the new menus that change every couple of months.” The restaurant offers cuisine cooked with Japanese and local ingredients and presented in a French style, which has definitely won the pair a lot of loyal customers. The Demi Menu offered at the time of this review started off with an amusebouche sandwich of lightly salted red beets. The first course that followed was a salad of Humboldt squid over rutabaga. Next was a second course of sous vide chicken with rice, capped off by a lovely chocolate lava cake with pink peppercorn filling and vanilla ice cream on the side.

The Chef’s Menu offered a mussels, apple and tonkotsu dish with salad, followed by salted cod and egg. The main course of venison was complemented by chanterelles and chestnuts, followed by a noodle dish with eggplant and shisho. The fifth course was a pre-dessert dish of apple, cheese and walnuts, followed by the same chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream found on the Demi Menu.

“I studied at Dubrulle Culinary Arts School,” Ono says. “My parents were both chefs. They opened the first-ever sushi restaurant in Winnipeg. “We offer fusion dishes at Mak N Ming,” Cheng adds. “We love local ingredients, as well as the seasonal ones. We also like fish from Japan. “We love to put more food on the plate and always remind ourselves not to make the portions too small. We want to make sure that we give customers value for money, in order to encourage them to come visit again and again.” Not only is Mak N Ming good value for the money, but it’s also a terrific addition to the list of highly innovative restaurants that are cropping up in the city. It’s a great spot for casual and fun gatherings, an unpretentious place that attracts a mixed-age group. The husband-and-wife owners are friendly and amiable, who leave the kitchen every night to greet their guests. Previously known as The Aerie Resort, the property was renamed Villa Eyrie Resort after a $2 million renovation and reopened in November 2016. It looks classic and elegant on the outside, but boasts contemporary and comfortable facilities on the inside, including a two-person massage pool. This resort is comprised of several buildings of varying heights, showing off a unique style and superior craftsmanship. Each room has windows and balconies that provide guests with fabulous views of the diverse geography that surrounds the facility. It’s not the flashiest car on the block, nor the most powerful, but the 2018 Audi S4 could very well provide the best value of all when it comes to European sport sedans. The S4 may fly under the radar with its rather conservative styling, but it’s what’s underneath that really matters here and the S4 has got the goods.

When it comes to Audis, I like to think of the cars with the ‘S’ designation as more sporty and speedy. Thus, the S4 is the performance variant of the more sedate A4, a stalwart in the Audi lineup for many years. Redesigned for 2018, the S4 has a new powertrain — a direct-injection, turbocharged 3.0-litre V6, generating 354 horsepower and 369 lb/ft of torque. It’s mated with an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic. The outgoing supercharged 3.0-litre V6 was a great engine, but this one is better and 14 kilograms lighter to boot. It’s more powerful and also more fuel efficient. How can you not like that combination? And, oh, the delightful sound of the exhaust when you punch the go-pedal is music to the ears of any auto aficionado. Peak torque is available from 1,370 rpm, meaning acceleration is quick right from the get-go. Peak power comes from 5,400 to 6,400 rpm. Audi suggests a 0-100 km/h time of 4.7 seconds. During my week with the car, I was never left wanting for more power. When I needed to punch the accelerator to merge into high-speed traffic or overtake another vehicle, there was always power aplenty. Braking was equally impressive. The car stopped as well as it accelerated. The dreaded turbo lag was minimal and the S4 proved to be an agile, capable performer in every driving situation. Sadly, there was no track time, but on the open road, the S4 was a gem to drive. The Audi drive-select system allows the operator to choose from different modes to make adjustments to things like steering, throttle and suspension. The modes include efficiency, comfort, auto, dynamic and individual. I left it in auto for the majority of my test, only venturing to the other modes to test them out.

Elite Car Power is sent to the road through Audi’s famous Quattro all-wheel-drive system. It’s a rear-based system with 60 per cent of torque heading to the back wheels. Our tester also came with the optional Quattro sport differential ($1,900) that splits the torque between the two rear wheels. As Audi explains it, when the car accelerates into a curve, the majority of the torque is delivered to the outside wheel to push the car into the curve and eliminate any tendency toward under- or over-steering. At a glance, it’s difficult to tell the S4 from the A4, but our tester sure stood out with the brilliant Navarra Blue paint that is exclusive to the S4 version. There are other subtle hints that set the S4 apart, including aluminum exhaust tips and unique wheels. The optional red brake calipers, a $500 option, also help the S4 stand out from the crowd. With a base price of $62,100 for our Technik trim, our tester had a number of other options, including dynamic steering ($1,500), S adaptive suspension ($1,000), heated rear seats ($350), carbon atlas inlays ($900), advanced driver assistance package ($2,100) and heads-up display ($1,100) that brought the as-tested price to $74,535, plus a freight charge of $2,095.

But for the buyer who values driving pleasure as much as the luxury touches, the S4 checks all the boxes — luxury, elegance, performance and outstanding driving dynamics.
