EDITOR’S NOTE
This issue of Discovering Stone is primarily about sealant companies and those who are included in the 2018 Sealant Guide which can be found on page 26. The section on sealants beings on page 16. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Tony Stock for his efforts on Discovering Stone magazines. We wish him only the best as he leaves his role as contributing editor to explore other opportunities. The response to Finishes & Surfaces magazine has been overwhelming since its release in late-2017. This publication specifically targets architects, specifiers, interior designers and fit out professionals. We are currently working on the 2018/2019 edition. Publisher, Vicky Cammiade, said, “The architect and specifier constantly needs a source for new ideas, applications, important technical data, as well as a focus on sustainability. These details important to the commercial sector. “This is vital to readers of Discovering Stone magazine as we can provide direct access to the marketplace they’re after, by providing a unique opportunity to be an integral part of the next edition, by showcasing important projects and fully detailing the product line used and why it was successful in all the tender requirements. “Sandie Velkovska our advertising sales manager has several marketing packages available that are very individual and will definitely get the attention you require. Contact Sandie on 03 9890 0815 or email sandie@elitepublishing.com.au to reserve your prime positions now.”

SHOW REPORT
The International Surface Event 2018 The Discovering Stone team hit the ground running at TISE 2018. It was impressed with the energy and positive sentiments at the show.
S
weeping into Las Vegas at night in an airplane, one thing seems certain: energy conservation and light pollution are not two of the most important issues for this community. Where Los Angeles at night looks like some animated illustration of circulation in living tissue, the long freeways traced by a seemingly endless procession of moving red taillights, and San Francisco resembles nothing so much as a printed circuit board, with its tall skyscrapers plugged into the flatland of the financial district like so many massive capacitors, Las Vegas really does look like a combination pinball/ video game/jukebox.
That’s especially so when it comes to what the locals (and experienced visitors) refer to as “The Strip”, a nearly seven-kilometre stretch of city street where virtually all the city’s most famous resorts and casinos are located. It’s a proximity that makes it easy for a tourist to wander from what seems like one fairy-like extravaganza to the next, ablaze in lights, all about entertainment — and the omnipresent slot-machines, never more than five metres away from any particular point. The well-known Mandalay Bay hotel (named after a famous poem by Rudyard Kipling) sits at one end of the strip. First opened in March
4 | DISCOVERING STONE #32 | www.discoveringstonemagazine.com.au
1999, the hotel was expanded with a second hotel tower, which opened in December 2003. Most importantly, a convention centre was added to the hotel, which opened in January 2003. With 140,000 square metres of space, it is, on its own, the fifth largest convention centre in the US. This vast convention centre is the annual location of the The International Surface Event (TISE). This year the event comprised three world-class tradeshows: SURFACES, StonExpo/Marmomac, and Tile Expo. It’s a four-day extravaganza of everything to do with coverings and facades for just about any horizontal or vertical surface. 6

Frequently used as an event to launch new products, it is also heavy on information about upcoming trends. Every major North American manufacturer is represented, along with most major global suppliers as well. It’s one of the few conventions of this type that offers solid opportunities to study and learn what really is going on in the world of surfaces. Some of the educational events included: State of the Industry Report in the Residential and Commercial Markets, presented by the well-known Farnsworth Group; Ageing in Place: Surfaces for Seniors; and multiple talks on subjects such as new flooring types, stone restoration, employee management, and style/design issues.
Department of Finance, Services and Innovation Notice of acceptance of a WHS undertaking under Part 11 of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 Workers were exposed to silica dust on 23 November 2016 and 13 December 2016 at the Department of Finance, Services and Innovation’s Heritage Stoneworks Alexandria production facility. A worker at the Heritage Stoneworks Alexandria facility suffered head injuries when struck by an overloaded stacker lift on 31 January 2017. The Department of Planning and Environment investigated the incidents and subsequently alleged that the Department of Finance, Services and Innovation contravened section 32 of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act) by failing to comply with a health and safety duty under section 19(1) of the WHS Act for each of the incidents.

In case all of that seems a little stuffy and formal — don’t worry, stuffy and formal might actually be the only thing that is illegal in Vegas! For example, it is the first convention we’ve been to that had its own DJ grinding out tunes to keep the attendees’ feet tapping. And if the convention did get a little overwhelming, you had only to step outside into the waiting wonderland of Las Vegas for a half-hour or so to rediscover your sense of enthusiasm. According to event organiser, informa, attendance at TISE 2018 was up 12% from the previous year. Over the past three years, attendance has increased 30%. Aimee Gilmour, CEM, director of TISE, said, “The TISE team has been truly honoured by the influx of emails from the industry … with how impressive the event was this year … It is our goal to create a marketplace for the industry to gather, do business, and build relationships. We’ll continue to listen and strive to fill the needs of the industry.” There is simply too much for Discovering Stone to cover comprehensively, but in what follows we’ve picked out some of the more significant events, people and products that really caught our attention.

The start of Colin Morrow’s (ACT Australia) relationship with Custom Building Products, a major producer of grout and adhesives, began on a “wing and a prayer” after previous dealings with it through another company. Around the same time last year, Colin said he “just rocked up to the stand” without an official invitation and met up again with one of its founders, Tom Peck, and said, “How are you going?” This simple introduction and the inevitable pitch for the business was met with an enthusiastic response. It eventually led to Colin bringing into the Australian market a specialist colour range. “The higher end stuff”, he explains.
“So we are trying to re-introduce Custom. We have about 10 new product lines and we are looking at doing more in the future. They are products that complement my existing lines.” One of the Custom products being imported by ACT Australia is RedGard SpeedCoat®. Colin said: “The beauty of this product is that it is premixed and you can use it on a damp substrate. So if you are repairing a shower recess, and it is still damp, normally you would have to let it dry out. That’s when you’d be using a normal membrane. “With SpeedCoat, you can put straight on a damp substrate. You can re-coat it within an hour and you can tile over it within an hour. Using standard products, it could take over 24 hours. And you can even flood test it. So you can waterproof the bathroom … it can be flood tested before you even get to tiling it, to make sure it’s not leaking. They are there having a bit of success with it here in America because it brings down the building timeframe and therefore the cost of building.” The Aqua Mix range is exclusively imported and distributed throughout Australia by NSWbased Custom Surface Solutions (Aqua Mix Australia). Aqua Mix has been the most preferred brand of sealers for seven consecutive years, according to the Tile & Stone Installation Contractor CLEAReport. This report is based on data from the US-based Clear Seas Research company. It measures opinions and current trends from professionals involved in the tile and stone installation industry. Both professional end-users and homeowners favour Aqua Mix for its easy-to-use formulas and high-quality results. The brand has also offered low and no VOC sealers for a long time and now these sealers are part of Custom Building Products BuildGreen® program and earn points toward LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. 8
TECHNI Waterjet™ Cutters are the preferred cutting tool for stone fabricators using modern stones such as Dekton, Neolith, or Maximum Fiandre. These man made stones are extremely hard and abrasive, and can therefore be very difficult to cut with traditional cutting tools such as saws, drills, and milling cutters. However, a TECHNI waterjet cutter can easily cut any shape, including accurately mitred edges ready for assembly, at speeds up to 1000mm/min.

SEALER GUIDE
Preserving the beauty of stone Countertops made from natural stone are beautiful but have always had one major drawback: they degrade over time and use. As they are permeable, they stain easily, which mars their stark, natural beauty. Cuts and scratches can usually be buffed out. One way to extend their life is to use sealants. However, these can sometimes offer limited protection and need to be reapplied on a regular basis, every one to two years. In the early 2000s an Australian company, Innovative Composites, developed a solution to this problem. Instead of a coating, it created a resin which covers the stone surface with a 1.6mm layer that acts as a barrier between the stone and anything that comes into contact with it. Clearstone, as the product is called, makes natural stone surfaces virtually impermeable to substances such as red wine, lemon juice, beetroot and even champagne. There has also been VOC testing and approvals to ensure the product is food safe. It offers permanent protection against etching and staining for marble, onyx, concrete, limestone, travertine, sandstone and other natural stone, and comes with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty.
The bathrooms of the Bel-Air Hotel have received the Clearstone treatment.
Clearstone has been used in the bathrooms of the Beverley Hills hotel.
Uwe Backes, CEO, Clearstone Holdings Pty Ltd, explains: “You can leave products like red wine, lemons, champagne, food colouring and any other food products on the surface for days and it will just wipe off with soapy water. “In bathrooms, Clearstone is impervious to foundation and makeup spills. Even nail polish which would normally be disastrous for natural stone, simply wipes off with acetone.” Clearstone is a self-levelling resin product, which means it is suitable only for horizontal surfaces, and not suitable for floors. It requires applicators who have been trained to apply it. Training takes two days, and this is followed by further onsite training with a certified Clearstone trainer. Clearstone Holdings was established in February 2014 as the distributor for Clearstone in the USA, based in Los Angeles, California. “In July 2017 we bought out Innovative Composites and moved the office and the manufacture of Clearstone from Melbourne to Sydney,” said Uwe.
Shari Mitchell is Clearstone’s US-based vice president and Tim Harper is the head trainer for all applicators while running his own Clearstone application business. The company has been involved in some major hotel projects including the Beverly Hills Hotel and Bel-Air Hotel in Los Angeles, the Waldorf, Langham and Loews hotels in New York, and the Lanesborough Hotel in London. As a German immigrant to Australia, Uwe has already had a number of successful businesses including launching the silicone brand Maxisil which is still selling in Bunnings and other retail stores around Australia. In 2002, Uwe and a business partner started Ecosmart Fires, a company that makes an environmentally friendly collection of vent-free ethanol fireplaces. It won many international design awards and was sold into 52 countries before Uwe sold out in late 2010. At the moment, Uwe and his current business partner Sara Heath are focused on Clearstone. In addition to Australia, the team is looking at new customers in Poland and the UAE.
“In the Australian market, we believe Clearstone complements the services offered by stone professionals, kitchen/bathroom specialists, builders and architects. Not only does it provide long term client satisfaction with the performance of their natural stone, it removes many of the maintenance and staining concerns that traditionally make customers shy away from natural stone.” Clearstone trades as Clearstone Coating Inc. in the USA. In November 2016, it relocated to Las Vegas where the company is currently based, as a distributor and training centre for new applicators.

Tech driven sealants
Protection for pool surrounds The areas that encircle many pools are aggressive environment with ingress of water, salts, organic stains, body fats, beverages and foods all having contributory impact. And the natural stone, masonry or concrete products installed are often chosen for their aesthetic appeal without due consideration for their resilience in this environment. Sealing natural stone is done primarily to preserve the integrity of the stone. It is also often used to prevent or limit staining or soiling. Ideally, both are required for pool surrounds and in this order.
repellence and are key to preserving the integrity of natural stone. Combine this with stone strengthening technology and users can have a fail-safe answer for stone preservation. This includes stone from igneous rock, calcite stone, sandstones, masonry and concrete. Fluorochemical treatments will provide a certain level of water repellence but typically do not provide for the level of water lock-out needed. Where fluorochemical sealers do perform their much-needed work is to preserve the surface from the unsightly consequences of food and beverage spills as well as body oils, typically found in pool surrounds.
Some areas, of course, are more vulnerable than others such as the coping/ bullnosing of any stone overhanging the pool.
So an exceptional protection treatment comprises of an application of a highquality silicone derived water repellent (preferably with stone strengthening technology) followed by an application of a solvent based fluorochemical penetrating sealer. Another option is the application of an intensifying, enhancing sealing. These penetrating sealers are a powerful water repellent and provide a high level of protection against oily spills and stains. Whichever treatment is chosen, users should ensure the integrity of the stone is adequately cared for before considering protection from staining.
Silicone derived treatments provide the most robust and durable water types of

Water and its damaging dissolved salts must be kept out of the porous structure of the stone. The most common damage and disfigurement is caused by salt attack and efflorescence. Water provides ingress for dissolved salts into the porous stone structure which upon drying, either crystallises and breaks up the stone, or are deposited on the surface in the form of efflorescence.

Aqua-Seal has introduced C6 Fluoro-Seal™ Technology to its range of high-calibre sealers. CEO A’nge Kokkaliaris said, “We are one of the first manufacturers in Australia to move to C6 Fluorocarbons. C6 Fluorocarbons are the safest alternative for the environment whilst delivering premium performance. Our Aqua-Seal Gold – Rapid Seal is a water-based sealer that delivers water, oil and grime repellence and has the added bonus of RAPID-SEAL™ curing in four hours. It drastically reduces the down time on domestic and commercial jobs. It has zero VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) making it ideal for where environmentally green products are required.” Other features and benefits include: • Maximum stain resistance against oil, food and grime • Reduces freeze/thaw damage, spalling and efflorescence • UV resistant - non flammable - inhibits mould & mildew • Suitable for high traffic, food preparation and serving areas because it is non-toxic • Useable for walls, floors, interiors and exteriors
SEALER GUIDE
Translating claims of sealer performance Nearly all sealer manufacturers use the same criteria for describing the performance characteristics of sealers. However, there is a huge difference between how these characteristics are portrayed, according to Clayton Strine (CJ) from Aqua Mix Australia. He writes the following. All sealers are described as having some degree of stain resistance, but from here some manufacturers say or infer that their sealers are stain proof. So, I thought it prudent to look at these common performance claims, strip away the marketing, and translate exactly what these mean in true terms. The following are the main performance characteristics and claims used by manufacturers to describe sealer performance: 1. Sealers are stain proof. This is the most extreme claim made by some manufacturers regarding their sealers. Most do not make such a claim thankfully. However, many do not define exactly how well they do seal. The truth is that all sealers on the market today will eventually fail. They are not stain proof! Sealers work by affording the sealed surface some reaction time to remove any offending contaminant. Without a sealer, a contaminant is working its way into a porous product immediately. A sealer however increases the time it takes for the contaminant to enter, thus giving you time to remove it without damage. A premium sealer offers the longest reaction time, not a stain proof impenetrable barrier. 2. The sealer will last 15 years. Claims of longevity are numerous in the
marketplace. Most make you believe the sealer will last this time regardless of what it is used on or where. But how long a sealer will last is totally dependent on several things. Firstly, the physical characteristics of the stone or tile. For example, the surface of sandstone is softer than granite and will obviously wear away faster especially if installed underfoot. Moreover, the thermal and moisture expansion of the two products is different. When a penetrating sealer is applied to both of these products in the same underfoot installation, it is obvious that the sealer will not last as long on the softer sandstone compared to the granite. The softer sandstone surface is abraded faster along with the sealer, and its increased expansion increases the shear force on the sealer also reducing its lifespan. So claims of longevity must be made relative to the physical characteristics of the sealed surface and the surfaces use and environment. 3. Sealers are waterproof. This is another claim that is often made but sealers cannot fill cracks and holes in surfaces and hence cannot be considered water tight surface coatings. Effective sealers are also designed to allow water vapour transmission, something that is not desirable in a critical primary waterproof membrane. Photos of water beading on the sealed surface are due to the low surface tension a good sealer affords the stone or tile surface which in turn allows the water to retain its high surface tension and bead. Lightly scrub the surface and you will see the water beads relax, dampen out the stone or tile surface and slowly

penetrate. These are not necessarily all of the performance claims made by sealer manufacturers, but they are generally considered the most common. At Aqua Mix we strongly recommend our clients do their own investigation into performance claims before selecting a suitable product.
Aqua Mix has been voted the most preferred brand of sealers for several years in a row

SEALER GUIDE
Marble restoration project An eight-storey building in Melbourne’s CBD that is over a century old had a marble floor, estimated to be half that lifespan, that began to show its age. Stone Doctor Australia received a call from the landlord inquiring if it could restore the floor at the entrance, steps and foyer. The team arrived at the project site to find the once gleaming floor in a very sorry state. Deep scratches and gouges marked its surface and its shine had long given way to a cloudy dullness. Stone Doctor outlined an eight-step process, assembled the necessary products and equipment from its Bellinzoni Italy and Coor & Kleever Spain ranges, and began work earlier this year. First, it carefully removed all existing grout between each tile using special circular handheld saws made in Germany. The dust shrouds on these saws kept the work area dust-free and clean throughout the entire process. Next, it re-grouted the floor with specialty colour-matched epoxies from Bellinzoni (Epox 2000) and used the same product to repair and patch up the surface cracks and other imperfections. Once this was done, it removed the excess epoxies with diamond abrasives. As it moved on to the restoration stage, Stone Doctor used a Coor & Kleever single-disc
grinding machine and seven different grits of diamond abrasives to prepare the floor for polishing. Then it relied on Coor & Kleever’s KM Marble Polishing Powder to restore shine to the floor and followed up with a surface impregnating treatment using Bellinzoni Idea Gold, a specialised nano-tech stone penetrating sealer to protect the floor from absorbing stains. Coor & Kleever’s K2 Crystallisation Liquid was the final touch to the finish. The work itself was intensive and multifaceted but the real challenge was the unavoidable constraints around the working environment. Space was very tight. The landlord also made it clear that Stone Doctor was only permitted to work on Sundays or after hours on weekdays. After each day was, a complete clean up had to be done and removal of all the equipment from the project site so it would be business as usual when the building opened the next morning. The lack of storage space and no water supply on site meant that Stone Doctor was hauling its equipment and water drums while trying to fit them into the narrow space. Despite the challenges, it successfully completed the project within eight weeks and to a standard that satisfied its client and the other owneroccupiers of the building.

Safeguarding against staining Lithofin MN Stain-Stop contains high quality water and oil resistant components based on alkoxysilanes, according to its data sheet. (Alkoxysilane is a general name for chemically reactive silane compounds.
They were introduced in the 1980s as sealers and consolidants for concrete and sandstones. The silane solution permeates well into the pores of the stone and deposits a nonlinear glasslike matrix of silicon dioxide. They are used alone or in combination with acrylic resins.) This Lithofin product penetrates into the surface and coats the capillaries with an extremely thin, invisible film. Oil, grease and water are not absorbed by the surface, but remain on the surface – between12 to 36 hours on polished marble and limestone, and up to 48 hours on granite and gneiss). During this time, oil can easily be removed without leaving stains. The effectiveness d pends on the amount of product absorbed by the surface. The appearance of the natural stone is not affected. Some stones may become slightly darker in colour. The water absorbency of the stone is greatly reduced; the water permeability is only slightly affected.
32 | DISCOVERING STONE #32 | www.discoveringstonemagazine.com.au
Lithofin Stainstop >W< is a water based, solvent free impregnator. As a result, the application method differs from solvent based impregnators. The product is ready-touse and contains highly active water and oil repellent polymers and additives. This impregnator effectively protects surfaces against the penetration of oil, grease, dirt and water, and it largely prevents staining. The appearance of the treated surface is either unaffected or only slightly altered. Durability can last up to four years depending on the type and use of the treated material. Surfaces that are subject to heavy use (kitchen work tops, bathrooms, etc.) should be touched up once per year. Both Lithofin products are easy to apply, safe to use around food, UV-resistant, and do not yellow. The Lithofin range for marble, natural and engineered stone is available from CDK Stone.

Staining is the most common problem affecting such porous materials, but there are other common types of damage. Water can be harmless, but if stone or paving is wet for long enough, moulds and bacteria take hold, and the material can be softened and weakened. Water also contains minerals (salts) which can leave unsightly residues or stains, and even cause major corrosion of pavers and tiles. One of the world’s most advanced impregnating sealers for protecting porous surfaces come from Dry-Treat, a company founded in Australia that has become a leading manufacturer of surface protection products for porous building materials.

Dry-Treat’s invisible impregnating sealers provide many advantages over traditional ‘topical’ (coating) sealers and other impregnating sealers. “Our technology comes down to two basic things”, explains vice president of sales, Gabriel Chapman. “Our impregnating sealers penetrate much deeper, and our special water and oil-repelling molecules actually bond
permanently inside the treated material – so you get a very deep and very long-lasting barrier of protection.” Dry-Treat’s flagship STAIN-PROOF™ sealer not only protects natural stone, paving and tiles against stains to keep them looking good, but also maintains the slip resistance of the surface, retards moss and mildew growth and makes the surface easier to clean. A 15-year performance warranty is available when the product is applied by an accredited applicator, although the simple application instructions have made it popular for DIY use as well. “Dry-Treat’s reputation has spread across 40 countries largely by word of mouth, because our sealers really do work”, said Gabriel. “Today STAIN-PROOF protects thousands of homes, and many well-known public icons, including the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the new BBC Scotland Headquarters, football stadiums, city malls, hotels and monuments. So, we are very comfortable backing our products with extraordinary warranties.”

The team at Spirit constantly tests its sealers and cleaners on various substrates to determine which of those will perform the best in any given situation. The business has distributors across Australia in most states and territories. Its distributors are very experienced, long-standing players in the sealing and cleaning industry. They bring a wealth of practical knowledge to Spirit’s customers. The company regularly writes specifications and maintenance programs for its clients which in turn enables them to offer a complete service to their clients. Spirit said it not only tests for which sealer is the best option for a particular stone or tile, but it will put the sealed product through a cycle of accelerated wear and tear and test it again. It believes this is an honest appraisal of the capabilities of a sealer.

Five stone finishes Melbourne-based stone care professionals, Stone Doctor offer a unique service for home-owners and commercial properties. When it comes to stone, most people are generally aware of only two possible finishes: the more matte “honed” finish, and the glossier “polished” finish. The former is more common in Australia, and the latter can often be seen throughout south-east Asia.
Semi-polished finish For property owners who can’t do without a bit of gloss, the semi-polished finish offers a good compromise between glamour and practicality. Ideal for interior floors, especially in marble and limestone, it has a more subtle sheen, creating understated elegance and provides better traction for foot traffic.
Brushed finish Stone Doctor can introduce property owners to a total of five possible stone finishes: - Honed finish - Polished finish - Semi-polished finish - Brushed finish - Antique finish It specialises in in-situ restorative work that does not require stone removal or replacement.
Honed finish Honed stone has been ground down to produce a perfectly flat surface, often lightening the basic colour of the stone as well. The popularity of the honed finish is due to the properties of this matte surface. A less polished surface means a more “natural” look, better camouflage of wear and tear, and high slip resistance. This makes the honed finish most suitable for countertops, as well as indoor and outdoor paving with high foot traffic, such as hallways and entrances.
Polished finish This finish provides the best visual appreciation of stone. When a stone is ground and processed to a refined state, the full depth of colour and beauty of the material itself are revealed. Commonly used on interior floors, bench tops and kitchen countertops, it provides a high-gloss, “designer” finish to interiors. However, this finish does have a real Achilles heal, in that it reveals signs of wear quite early in its life-cycle. Scratches and etch marks can easily mar the ultra-smooth surface. It has limited anti-slip properties, making it unsuitable for wet areas.
In the brushed process, the stone is textured to a rough finish using brushes and water. This process removes the softer stone particles from the surface. This gives is a rough, rustic look, and can often transform the base stone to which it is applied. It also creates a good anti-slip surface, making it a finish that is ideal for uses such as outdoor kitchens and outdoor paving.
Antique finish Also known as a leathered or river wash finish, antique finish is rapidly gaining popularity for the way it enhances a stone’s attractiveness and durability. The process involves the use of various techniques to artificially “age” the appearance of the stone. It can combine high-design with practicality. For example, kitchen countertops with this finish are pleasant to the touch, and yet remain practical when it comes to cleaning and general maintenance. Stone finishes have come a long way from the days of just pure gloss and shine. Knowing them well enough to make bold and creative recommendations will not only do justice to the stone but will earn you the reputation of being an industry trendsetter. Stone Doctor can help you achieve the very best with your use of stone, securing a better match between material and design, while also ensuring the stone functions to help deliver an optimal result. Want to know more about the suitability of these stone finishes for your residential or commercial project? Contact Stone Doctor Australia at (03) 9429 1223.

PROFILE
CMP Stonemason Supplies Established in 1991, CMP Stonemason Supplies believes keeping abreast of the ongoing changes in the industry is critical to remaining a viable supplier.
T
o keep up with this rapid pace of change that has seen the evolution from traditional granite or marble benchtops to the emergence of engineered stone, to the latest porcelain materials and its many variants, diamond tool manufacturers have had to work very hard to develop new technology for bridge saws, mitre saws, smaller diameter blades for hand-held grinders and an increasing range of CNC tooling; core bits, milling fingers, profiling tools and rebating and grooving tips. Fortunately, the companies that CMP is associated with have succeeded in producing the tools that can do the job – technology has caught up with the advancements in material development.
Dekton Cosentino, manufacturers of Dekton, have worked very closely with CMP’s Italian diamond tool maker, Italdiamant, to produce tools that allow benchtop fabricators to cut and mitre their materials. Cosentino recommend using Italdiamant’s EvoGres range for processing Dekton. There are certain procedures and parameters to follow, recommended by both material and tool
manufacturers to enable the best outcome. CMP is also able to bring to its customers the latest range of CNC tools from Nicolai and Diamut. Both companies are constantly developing new tools for porcelain products.
Tenax PowerBond Tenax has developed the PowerBond range of injectable epoxy adhesives using a special dispensing gun to deliver pre-mixed, pre-coloured glues where required for porcelain and Dekton. PowerBond has the significant advantage of being user-friendly – it has no odour, and is far less likely to cause skin irritations It is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and is not as runny as some other products. Being a genuine epoxy, PowerBond has unsurpassed strength. It also comes in a form known as “GlaxS”, which cures as clear as water.
Abrasivos Alicante The latest range of tools available from CMP are the Spanish-made products from Abrasivos Alicante, an inventor and manufacturer of stone tools that includes the 3 Step UltraBond Pads to repolish granite, marble and engineered stone (including dark colours!) to an extremely high-gloss finish.
Chisels from Trow & Holden, a US-based maker of chisels for the traditional stone sector.

These pads come as 100mm diameter for a hand-held wet polisher and 330mm, 430mm and 505mm for use on a radial arm polisher or floor scrubbers. Colour-coded, the UltraBond system is 100% ecofriendly, requires no chemicals and is used with water to help remove some scratches and achieve the glossiest shine. CMP also stocks its honing pads, Snail-lock/M14 and Frankfurts as well its Ageing Brushes in silicone carbide and diamond, once again available in Snail-lock/M14 and Frankfurt. Abrasivos Alicante has also developed a more durable form of bush hammering tools in a range of formats to create textured finishes to the surfaces of most materials.
Trow & Holden CMP is now the Australasian distributor for Trow & Holden, the leading American maker of chisels for the traditional stone sector. Quality and durability are a priority in these tools. It offers pneumatic chisels, pneumatic hammers to lettering chisels, both Tungsten Carbide and hardened steel tools as well as Tungsten Carbide handheld hammers for heavy-duty work. Intermac, the inside story Technology editor Phil Ashley recently visited Intermac in Pesaro, Italy to take a look at how its quality machines are built.
B
ack in 1987, Intermac was set up as a branch of the wood working machine company of Biesse. Initially producing only glass processing machinery for seven years, Intermac ventured into stone processing machinery with enormous success. It seems fitting that Italy; where city-states such as Florence erected great stone structures such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Laurentian library, would produce some of the finest CNC stone processing machines today. Biesse’s first foray into other materials processing was the Master Glass for the automatic CNC shaped scoring of glass. The Master Edge for the CNC machining of edges of straight and curved glass panels followed in 1990. Master Stone was created in 1994, Intermac’s first CNC for stone machining. Intermac inherited the
technology of the Pesaro-based company that had become one of the market leaders in high technology processing of wood and it remains at the forefront of advanced materials processing technology. The similarities of the processing needs for glass and stone meant that for the stone industry, the new machines were ideally suited to a product that until this time was mainly based on traditional stone craftsmanship. Now, homeowners can benefit from technology that brings the beauty and durability of designer-benchtops within reach of their budgets. Director Gianluigi Casadio said, “I can’t help thinking of the Master which has always been synonymous with machining throughout the world. The association is solid and undisputed, and that’s something we’re proud of.
44 | DISCOVERING STONE #32 | www.discoveringstonemagazine.com.au
A large frame structure made by an Intermac machine. (Inset) Machining a table.
“When Intermac designed and developed the first machining centres, it introduced innovation and technology to a world that still did things manually. This insight made us true leaders and over these years we have been able to maintain that position. But we don’t want our past success to limit us. We know that companies that innovate, market leaders can go one of two ways. They can either remain leaders or sit and wait for someone to outdo them. We certainly don’t plan to sit and wait; we want to be sure that other models like the Primus waterjet or the Vertmax vertical glass processing machines will be associated by everyone with the technology they use.”
The Master Glass for the automatic CNC shaped scoring of glass.
The production in Pesaro has been based on the Kaisen continuous improvement manufacturing system for five years. The system guarantees a consistency of quality that is essential to a company that manufactures for the world market. In fact, there are 160 checks made on each machine during the assembly stage. Several different models of machine can be manufactured on the same assembly line. Due to increased sales, it has been split into two lines. The company manufactures between 12 and 15 machines every week but interestingly 80% of its fabrication is production cells of two or more machines with some form of materials transfer and handling. Most machines are different and built to satisfy the unique needs of the customer. In many cases an acceptance test is required before the machine even leaves the factory. Like all modern manufacturing of major machines, sub-assemblies are built to a very exact timing method called takt time. Takt comes from the German word, taktzeit or clock interval, and each stage is carefully planned so that the sub-assembly arrives at the machine in the correct order and at the exact time. Takt time is not the time it takes to make a product but refers to the rate of production needed for meeting customer demand, a different thing altogether. The work required to assemble a sub-assembly is also carefully considered so that mistakes can be eliminated and new workers can be trained quickly. At Intermac,
every machine on the production line is different but its logistics are advanced and can accommodate a wide range of variations of the product. Many people refer to quality but the real question is, “Is it fit for purpose?” or, “Will it do what it was intended to?” To ensure that every machine will do what the customer expects, the parts are continually tested during the entire manufacture of the machine. Because of this, the electrical cabinet is installed as early as possible and as every cabinet is designed for a specific machine it carries the same serial number as the machine it was designed for. After the machine is built, it goes through two days of additional trials before it is disassembled for packaging and transport to local and international customers. To further ensure that all the parts on every machine are the quality needed for continuous machine operation, only limited numbers of parts are kept in stock with deliveries. In some cases, this could be every day. Defective parts are identified early and replacements can be resupplied in a very short time. Intermac’s production has total control over the end product. Director Franco Angelotti said, “Our customers need to produce more at lower costs and keeping the process in check. In an increasingly competitive world, where margins keep getting tighter, having control becomes a crucial part of staying competitive.

AWISA
“The needs that have become standard are having machines integrated one with the other, having machines communicate with the management system, reporting on the flow. Other advantages that come with integration include diagnostics to correct interruptions and being able to spot and correct problems quickly. The priority mission these days is improving efficiency and having control over the production process.” Intermac produce an extensive range of equipment for processing materials. Machines include the Primus waterjet cutting machines for laminated and monolithic glass, marble, granite and engineered stone; the Master series for stone and glass processing; and the Vertmax for vertical processing of glass. It is supported by the Donatoni range of bridge saws and a complete range of processing tools from Diamut. With so much at stake, it is important that the customer trusts that the machine will do exactly what was promised. Director Gianluigi Casadio said, “I can tell you how we try to maintain trust: by being consistent and knowing how to listen. We’re consistent in providing the specifications our customers expect, but we also know how to listen to their changing needs. The market changes all the time and businesses

can no longer simply respond to expectations. We need to interpret, always thinking ahead and putting oneself in the customer’s shoes. A machine that doesn’t work well, or doesn’t do what is expected of it, hampers the customer’s work as well. That’s a risk we’re not willing to take”. By launching the next generation of Master machining centres, Intermac aims to reaffirm and consolidate its leadership in the machining of glass, stone and metal for years to come. It’s a leadership entrenched in the company’s ongoing drive for innovation and solutions that can meet the needs that come with the new manufacturing philosophy that is Industry 4.0. ■

AUSTRALIAN STONE - BEST RESIDENTIAL PROJECT ARCHITECT: Finnis Architects DESIGNER: No specific architect – this was a team project BUILDER/DEVELOPER: The Rattray Group – Julian Rattray STONE SUPPLIER: Bamstone STONE INSTALLER: Peninsular Stone Masons
Bluestone in Brighton Situated in the Melbourne bay side suburb of Brighton, this two story home featuring Bluestone from Bamstone celebrates modern design. Diamond sawn Australian bluestone wraps the external walls in a harmonious rhythmic pattern, according to Bamstone. Each paver was fixed to the exterior façade with mechanical and megaproxy fixing. Additionally, sawn Australian bluestone paving surrounds the exterior of the house, leading the eye to the outdoor drop edge bluestone pool and entertainment space. Bringing the outdoors in, bluestone flows into the interior space via feature wall pillars, complementing the natural wood architectural features throughout. The stone has been fixed with an open 2mm join with mitred corners. High ceiling details and large open living spaces
make the interior space a simplistic and timeless oasis. Cam Freeden, director, Peninsula Stonemasons Group, said: “One of the important lessons learned by us after 40 years as building masons in Victoria is, choose your suppliers wisely. For first grade geology, service and sheer technical ability Bamstone set all the standards”. Bamstone is an Australian, familyowned and operated business with a reputation for superior customer service and the production of highest quality natural stone products. The company have been paving projects in Australia and the world with Bamstone Bluestone for more than four decades. Today, it is Australia’s largest stone processing facility. It also produces unique artisan-created stone furniture.

Giant stone playground CATEGORY
AUSTRALIAN STONE - BEST CIVIC PROJECT ARCHITECT: Mike Hewson Studio, in association with Fiona Robbe Landscape DESIGNER: Mike Hewson BUILDER/DEVELOPER: Mike Hewson Studio STONE SUPPLIER: Bundanoon Sandstone STONE INSTALLER: Bundanoon Sandstone
Three large sandstone carved units weighing 16 tonnes, 17 tonnes and 30 tonnes were lifted into place to form the main structure of the certified children’s playground. In addition, 42 “forklift rocks” weighing an average of 3.1 tonnes were placed in Wollongong’s Crown Street Mall. Project manager, Mike Hewson, said: “The artwork brings the Illawarra’s unique geographical feature, the escarpment, into the mall both conceptually and
physically. The two elements selected to represent this transportation of nature were firstly sandstone, the geological formation and secondly, the cabbage tree palm, a distinctive tree native to the Illawarra. “These elements were placed in the mall in a provisional manner as if it was temporary decoration in the mall. The forklift slots cut into the base of the beautiful weathered stone blocks is an almost irreverently practical modification. The four palms are also placed haphazardly throughout the mall, one strapped up a lamppost like a flag or an extension to the pole, two are laid on their sides to be used as seats and the fourth is slotted through a giant stone for kids to climb on. “The playground became to the most prominent and important aspect of the project, something that thematically ties the rest of the artwork together. The three giant stone formations were carved in collaboration with Troy Stratti of Bundanoon Sandstone into specific forms that assembled together like an abstract modernist maquette.”

AUSTRALIAN STONE - BEST CIVIC PROJECT ARCHITECT: Urban & Landscape design by Outlines DESIGNER: Urban & Landscape design by Outlines – team project BUILDER/DEVELOPER: Project delivery by 2Construct and build by KL Design and Construction STONE SUPPLIER: Bamstone STONE INSTALLER: KL Design and Construction (Kings Landscaping – Geelong)
Installed by Kings Landscaping Design and Construction along with 2Construct, over 5000sqm of 40mm, 60mm, 80mm and 100mm thick Diamond Sawn Australian Bluestone paving was supplied to Stage 1 of the Liebig Street redevelopment, as part of the Warrnambool City Centre renewal project. There was approximately 2km of straight and radial 200 x 300mm kerb, along with various straight and radial flush tray and wings for several crossings. Unique to this design was the creation of “Activity Node Paving Junction” stones which were specific to Outlines’ design and were used to create the custom planter boxes which now line the main street of Warrnambool. Bespoke overflow kerbs were also created for this
project along with four freestanding bluestone seats (400 x 300mm). Custom engraved paving featuring the name of the streets was also installed at the pedestrian crossings along each corner of the main areas. As a gift from Bamstone to the Warrnambool City Council, director Michael Steel created and donated the uniquely carved “Liebig” Street sign, which was installed at the beginning of the new streetscape. This custom seat took three days to carve out on the CNC Wire Saw and a few additional weeks to be finished by hand by Bamstone’s expert stonemasons. It took Bamstone around 12 months to produce all the stone required for this project and six months for Kings Landscaping and 2Construct to complete construction.

EVENTS
The Surface Design Show, reviewed They say size isn’t everything, and The Surface Design Show (SDS) proves the point. This annual event is held at The Business Design Centre (BDC), Islington, London, UK. Most Australians will never have heard of this venue, which is located 10 minutes from Kings Cross St. Pancras International and a short walk from Angel tube station. However, the Business Design Centre is one of London’s most popular conference and exhibition venues, hosting over 300 events a year. At events like The Surface Design Show, the space restrictions actually prove a benefit. Stand space for the 170 exhibitors is carefully controlled. As a result, rather than large corporate flag waving, the exhibitors curate a restricted portfolio of innovative products, so that visitors really get to see the very latest in surface solutions. For lovers of all things natural, the Stone Gallery, launched in 2016, is for architects and designers to meet and specify natural stone. Co-located with the Surface Design Show and Light School, Stone Gallery is supported by Stone Federation GB. Exhibitor highlights include SSQ, owner and operator of the Riverstone Phyllite quarry in central Argentina. Stronger, harder and denser than slate, Phyllite is now the preferred choice of many architects across the UK, Europe and USA. New Image Stone is a leading supplier, manufacture and installer of natural stone products to the high end residential and commercial fit out sector. Skarlis Marble has 30 years experience and is accommodated in its large modern plant in Greece with an exclusive quarry of 200.000sqm area on Skyros Island. At SDS, the company concentrated on two marbles. Yellow Whitish has a white background with yellow and scarlet veins. It is an elegant translucent marble of stunning beauty. Its perfect chemical composition (pure calcite) combined with its beauty makes it ideal for flooring, cladding, vanity tops and wall cladding.
Golden Sky from Skarlis Marble was a highlight at SDS.
Golden Sky has a blue/grey background, white veining and yellow highlights. It is a very resistant marble and its neutral colour suits most kinds of decoration, from the simplest through to the most luxurious. Johnsons Wellfield operates one of the UK’s largest, best equipped stoneworking plants, extracting and manufacturing the renowned Crosland Hill Hard Yorkstone from its 300 acre site in the Yorkshire Pennines. Harrison Goldman is a leading independent stone consultant and design company, providing the construction industry and private sector with carefully-engineered natural stone solutions. Kentish Ragstone is the most widespread stone used throughout the South East of England. To maintain the character of Kent’s local architecture, Gallagher supplies stone for restoration, new build and bespoke projects. Founded in Carrara, Italy, and now operating in UK, Fontanili Marble aims to offer the highest stone quality and advanced manufacturing for projects. At SDS, it displayed a selection of eight Palissandro marbles (nuvolato, bluette, bronzo, oniciato, crevola fiorito, classico, bronzetto, and reale) all sourced from one quarry in the north of Italy. This material is becoming more and more popular due to its variety and its resistance. It has been used on the Hilton Hotel in Shekou, China; the Radisson Royal in Moscow; and the Marriot hotel in Baku. Zclad and Century Stone offers a cladding system made from natural and cast stone. They create a stylish veneer, suitable for both contemporary or traditional designs. Autumn Gold Zclad is a simple natural stone walling cladding panel. Made from natural quartz stone with gold and brown tones, it is set in a concrete panel with mechanical fixing clips. From Joe Simpson

Euro Natural Stone stand at DesignBUILD.
The DesignBUILD speaker program provides access to leading industry professionals who will discuss new products, policy and applications needed to keep ahead of the game. Keynote speakers Michael McCormack (Milieu Property Group), Robert Simeoni (Robert Simeoni Architects) and Simon Knott (BKK Architects) will be joining the town planners and design panel to discuss how the growth of Melbourne as an international city depends on a successful working relationship between developers, architects and town planners. Product compliance and conformity – informed by the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London last year and the 2014 Lacrosse building fire in Melbourne – is a critical issue at DesignBUILD this year. They will be addressed through a panel discussion hosted by the Building Products Innovation Council’s Rodger Hills. In addition to speakers, DesignBUILD’s “Incubator” is a creative pavilion at the trade show that champions innovative thinkers and gives them a commercial platform to launch their inventions. The five most innovative entries are judged by
an industry advisory panel against a set of criteria covering: innovation, creative, sustainability and proposed impact on industry. In another project, DesignBUILD’s RAW allows university students to experience the full tender and construction process as they compete to have their designs built as key feature areas on the show floor. Conference director Pia Argiratos said this year’s event will include three panels led by respected architecture and design journalist Stephen Crafti. The discussions will be focused on: whether property speculation is compromising design outcomes; innovations in multi-level development; and how architects and town planners can collaborate rather than clash, for mutual benefit. “DesignBUILD is about bringing together people who are talking about the big topics that the industry is starting to deal with. It’s bringing together industry leaders to be able to lead discussions on this,” says Argiratos. “DesignBUILD is an opportunity for people to come together and not only learn about the latest products and innovation, but also to pause and reflect where the industry could do better… “[It] represents a space for the many ‘tribes’ of the industry to come together off the work site and learn together. This event is an opportunity to think about better ways to do things – so it’s a chance to work on the business, not in it. ■
