Satellite and Meteor export to UK and South Africa The success of Satellite triple disc SP planetary and six disc grinders from Floorex in Australia and New Zealand has led to these machines being in demand in other countries. In particular, the UK market is proving the Satellite and Meteor to be a standard of machine that has not previously been available. The unique SP planetary drive is a system delivering a much more consistent grinding intensity across the width of
the grinder and delivers a standard of flatness in excess of older design machines. This makes it perfect for the floorcoverings industry for flattening floors, removal of glue and preparation for selflevelling products. Ruggedness is what makes these Floorex Australian designed and manufactured machines so attractive, with the cost to maintain around 20 to 30% of complex drive planetary machines.

News AFS continues to expand its network
Top of his (weight) class
On 17 October, QEP Australia announced the acquisition of Flooring Trade Supplies (FTS) in Sydney, an expansion of its Australian Flooring Supplies (AFS) operations. This acquisition provides a new trade centre in the inner city Sydney suburb of Alexandria as well as a daily metropolitan Sydney van delivery service. In addition, Craig Hildebrand, the principal of FTS, who is well known to the flooring industry, will remain with the business and has been appointed as General Manager NSW for AFS. The Holdfast brand of adhesives, previously sold by FTS, will now exclusively be distributed by AFS throughout NSW, Victoria and the ACT. Bruce Maclaren, Managing Director of QEP commented: "This acquisition will significantly strengthen the AFS business by expanding our trade centre network, adding the Holdfast range of adhesives to our offer and bringing the experience of Craig Hildebrand into our organisation. “It represents a clear message to our customers and the general market that we are committed to keeping AFS at the forefront of accessory distribution in Australia."
BCITO is delighted to highlight the success of a stage one flooring apprentice, who can well and truly say he pulls his own weight,” said Gloria McGuire, Marketing and Communications, BCITO (Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation, NZ). Eighteen year-old Ethan Hawken recently took first place in his category (Junior Men, 77kg class), at the 2014 NZ National Weightlifting Championships held at the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health in Auckland. The young Southlander, who works for Chris Burns of Winton Flooring Xtra, 30km north of Invercargill, signed up for his apprenticeship in carpet, resilient and substrate in December 2013 and is going from strength to strength. Ethan has been weightlifting for four years and the sport is clearly in his genes. “I definitely want to go as far as I can in the sport and to lift as much as I can,” he said. “I take training seriously and I try to watch what I eat and look after myself. I have to eat a lot to stay in my weight class but that’s easy living at home at the moment, I pretty much eat whatever mum cooks – she’s onto it.”
Ethan got into flooring by chance when he was looking for possible future job options at a local careers expo. “I didn’t really see anything I liked at first, but then I met Scott Cato, BCITO Training Advisor, and we started talking. He was really great and helped me get a job with my current boss, who then signed me up for an apprenticeship.” Flooring is a very physical discipline – rolls of carpet and vinyl can weigh up to 150kg – so being able to lift a combined total of 225kg is a definite advantage. However, lifting a barbell and lifting equipment at work require different skills and levels of concentration. “When I’m lifting in the gym or in competition, I’m in the zone. It doesn’t mean that it’s easy to lift a massive bucket of glue, that’s a really different technique.”

The move to New Zealand two years ago was Kennards Hire’s first foray into the international market, and the Kennards Hire New Zealand team have gone from strength to strength ever since. The latest success – tertiary accreditation with Workplace Safety Management Practices (WSMP) – is perhaps the biggest source of pride for the business so far. WSMP recognises medium to large businesses that have implemented effective health and safety systems and practices in their workplaces. There are three levels of accreditation– secondary, primary and tertiary. Only a very small percentage of businesses applying for WSMP accreditation receive a tertiary level on their first attempt, and Kennards Hire NZ did exactly that. Tom Kinross, General Manager of Kennards Hire New Zealand is thrilled with the level of workplace responsibility displayed by his staff and managers.
“WSMP accreditation is satisfying for Kennards Hire on a number of levels,” Kinross explained. “It is an affirmation from a highly respected industry body that we are doing the right things in terms of looking after our employees and customers. “It places us in the upper echelon of companies in terms of safety, which in turn makes us a top contender for those considering hire companies for large scale jobs. That’s the space we occupy in Australia, and now that is the space we will occupy on both North and South islands of New Zealand,” he concluded. The application process is rigorous and involves written submissions, interviews with a selection of management staff and drivers, and a presentation to the WSMP board. Kennards Hire currently has branches in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington and caters to a wide range of industries and trades, from single person operations right up to large construction companies.

News Record number of international players registered for DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR Although the 17th DOMOTEX asia/CHINALFOOR is not taking place until 24 to 26 March 2015, the number of international suppliers registered to participate already exceeds the figure for the previous event. In fact, the number of wood flooring manufacturers expected to exhibit next time is 50% higher than in 2014. Four entire exhibition halls have been allocated to the display category wood flooring and laminates, for which leading international companies such as Kronoswiss, Kronotex, Beaulieu, Ter Hürne, Egger, Berry Alloc and Witex have signed up. Major Chinese
exhibitors include Nature, Sunyard, Yihua, Boer, Jinqiao, Teclic and Huaming. With this impressive lineup DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR reaffirms its status as the leading specialist show in the Asia-Pacific region not only for carpets and floorcoverings but also for wood and laminate flooring. DOMOTEX asia/ CHINAFLOOR 2014 attracted 1,177 exhibitors from every segment of the floorcoverings industry. Of these companies around 22% came from outside China. In 2015 the trade fair for carpets and floor coverings will occupy 12 exhibition halls with a total area of 140,000 m2.
RugMark founder wins Nobel Peace Prize While Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teen activist shot in the head by the Taliban while going to school in 2012 is well known, her Indian Nobel Peace Prize corecipient is not. Kailash Satyarthi is a 60-year-old New Delhibased activist, has been almost singlehandedly leading India’s fight against child slavery for over three decades. To that end, he founded a grassroots nonprofit, Bachpan Bachao Andolan, or Save Childhood Movement, in 1980, which has to date rescued more than 80,000 Indian children from various forms of exploitation, like child labour and child trafficking. He also founded the widely recognised international tag RugMark that guarantees carpets being sold were made in factories free of child labour. India is the largest exporter of handmade carpets and a large number of the weavers are underage child workers. Satyarthi hopes his prize will renew focus on the plight of these children. India has one of the largest working child populations in the world. There are close to 50 million
child labourers in the country, more than 10 million of them in bonded labour, having been sold by their families to work off loans they couldn’t repay. Despite the remarkable success of his organization, Satyarthi, who is trained as an electrical engineer, has preferred working almost anonymously in the backdrop. His work has involved organising almost weekly raids on Indian manufacturing plants and other workplaces that employ children often forced into bonded labour. Since 2001, Satyarthi’s organisation has convinced families in more than 300 Indian villages across 11 states to avoid sending their children to work, and instead put them in school and send them to various youth programs. In one of his initial reactions to the award, Satyarthi told an Indian news channel that he hopes the recognition will once again bring and keep the spotlight on the exploitation of children globally. In India, for sure, the often-fringe topic of child labor has gained some mainstream clout—and Satyarthi’s Nobel prize will only bring more.

News Mapei sponsors the inaugural Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race In the previous two decades Mapei has forged inextricable links with Australia and the world of professional cycling. These close ties will once again be in evidence in January 2015 when Mapei sponsors the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, which promises to be one of Australia’s greatest weekends of professional and recreational cycling. This commitment carries particular poignancy as it enables Mapei to express its abiding gratitude to an iconic Australian sportsman who has represented the company with professional and personal distinction over the past 12 years.
His impending retirement draws the curtain on a remarkably successful career, which has seen Cadel become the first and only Australian Tour de France champion. “We are very proud of Cadel’s achievements,” said Dr Adriana Spazzoli, Mapei’s Operational Marketing Director. “He is a quiet, serious and dedicated person, who is a credit to Mapei and the sport of cycling. “His decency and personal qualities are as important as his sporting successes and the forthcoming event provides Mapei with a wonderful chance to show our appreciation. We cannot be there in person but our
Australian representatives will be present, to convey our thanks and support.” The partnership between Mapei and Cadel has been built on shared ambition and mutual respect, with individuals such as CEO Giorgio Squinzi, and the greatly admired Aldo Sassi, helping to create an environment in which the tenacious and naturally gifted Australian could fulfil his considerable talent. Cadel wore the Mapei team’s famous cubetti jersey during the 2002 season and has trained subsequently at the state-of-the-art Mapei sports centre in northern Italy, where his transition from promising mountain biker to eminent road cyclist took place. Mapei established its Australian subsidiary in Brisbane some 21 years ago and has developed a strong reputation with the building and construction industries. Mapei manufactures and

supplies over 1400 innovative products across 15 product ranges, positioning Mapei as a world leader in the supply of eco-sustainable building products (adhesives, grouts, waterproofing, primers, concrete repair, concrete admixtures, protective coatings and much more). Mapei Australia is flourishing and ground will soon be broken in Wacol, Queensland where new production premises are to be constructed on a 16,300 m2 site. Mapei and its local enterprise are exceptionally proud of Cadel and look forward to supporting him and the other competitors as they cycle along the Great Ocean Road this summer. The event starts on Saturday 31 January 2015, with the people’s ride in the morning followed by the Elite Women’s Race in the afternoon. The Elite Men’s Race will be staged on Sunday 1 February, 2015.

Retailer of the month
Upholding high standards Carpet House, Newtown, Victoria
16 Flooring Dec 2014/Jan 2015
Staff members Ann Hayes, Mark Baker and Michael Kenny with owner Brendan Lewtas.
E
stablished in 1973 by Doug and Liz Baldwin and originally located in Pakington Street, Geelong West, Carpet House has a long and proud history of providing Geelong and its surrounding regions with quality carpet. It’s a tradition that continued to grow in 1991 when Greg Midolo purchased the business and further enhanced it’s reputation for quality and attention to detail. Current owner and former employee, Brendan Lewtas knows only too well the values and work ethic on which the business is based and now has the responsibility of upholding the high standards set by those before him. Brendan worked in the store for 10 years before buying the business four years ago. “I knew the previous owner and he took
me on when I left school,” he said. “I really enjoy the job – it is a great industry to be involved with.” Carpet House specialises in carpet and rugs for the domestic market and is a proud member of the Woolset Group. While the emphasis is on quality Axminster and New Zealand wool and alpaca, the store also stocks solution dyed nylon and recycled PET fibre carpets – all aimed at the mid to high end of the market in Geelong and the surrounding areas – the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surfcoast, the Otways and even as far as Melbourne. The showroom is currently divided between carpet and rugs with around one third of the space devoted to displaying the rugs – up to 400 hundred when all the racks are full. For
the convenience and peace of mind of their customers, Carpet House has a ‘Try Before You Buy’ policy that gives their clients the assurance they need when making a rug purchase. “If it’s not right, they can simply return it,” said Brendan. The carpet range is housed in purpose built displays, which are quite unique to Carpet House. There are also a large number of samples installed on the floor so customers can walk on and feel the carpet underfoot before they buy. Currently there is no resilient or hard flooring stocked by Carpet House but that is set to change in 2015 when they are added to the showroom display. “Up until now carpet and rugs have been enough for us but we are conscious that other flooring stores in the region offer a broader selection of floorcoverings,” Brendan explained. “We also know that today’s consumers
like to purchase all their flooring products from one store because they are time poor so we need to increase our offering or risk losing out to our competitors. “We are always trying to evolve to keep up with what our customers want.” While the showroom is quite large at around 1000 m2, this isn’t the totality of the premises with a large warehouse also on site so that customers can be sure of a quick turnaround with their order. “We pride ourselves on the excellent service provided by our experienced sales team who possess an extensive knowledge of the products supplied,” said Brendan. “Above all else, we are committed to providing quality carpet at the best possible price. “We only deal with trusted Australian suppliers, who stand by their product, and every aspect of each job is fully guaranteed.”

According to Shaw Contract Group Australia National Sales Director, Aaron Martin, the main attraction of the collection is its uniqueness and the impressive finished result. “Hexagon is unlike any other carpet tile collection on the market with its thoughtfully planned colour palette and it’s ability to create an impact,” said Aaron. “It’s design assists movement through space and helps develop socially attractive pockets to facilitate networking and collaboration. “These features have seen the collection prove particularly popular for office projects with thousands of square metres recently installed at QBE Insurance
Sydney, Liberty Insurance Melbourne, On The House Brisbane and Abbott Pharmaceuticals Sydney. “It has also been popular in education facilities with it recently being installed at Coloola College, Brisbane,” added Aaron. At Melbourne Indesign (22 to 23 August, 2014) Hexagon also made a design statement in the Chairbiz showroom, Richmond, sparking conversation upon entry. “In addition to visually impressive results, Hexagon offers limitless installation options and it’s no harder to lay than ordinary carpet tiles,” said Aaron. “And when installed with Lok Dots, our pressure sensitive installation system, there are also other benefits including no need for a traditional wet adhesive, meaning the installation areas can be trafficked while working and there’s no cure time, meaning the floor can be walked on immediately after installation. “To assist with the initial set out of hexagon there are detailed step-by-step installation directions available for download from the installation section of our website and our experienced team is always here to assist,” he said. There are four styles within the Hexagon collection with the foundation being Plane, available in 29 colours of varying hue and value, ranging from cool to warm. Linear provides a classic, striated visual to create a random herringbone texture when installed in a multidirectional manner while Linear Shift creates a subtle shift of value across the

Flight assists way-finding and defines movement Offering a new solution for open environments, Shaw Contract Group’s new carpet tile collection, Flight, creates movement and defines space in environments free of structural constraint. Bold patterns inspired by how we move interplays with colour, stripes and a shifting ombre – achieving a directional impact within a vast space. Drawing inspiration from the pavers of ancient plazas and the mathematics behind people moving from one location to another, the designs fold movement into static statements and provide new options for building scale and dimension.
“This collection is the result of our interest in the science of how people move through space,” said Shaw Contract Group Commercial Sales Director Aaron Martin. “Our design team explored computational studies of exactly how people move through airports and immersed themselves in Levy Flights, a garrulous mathematical model, which echoes our movement through space and time,” said Aaron. Large scale and open, public spaces are typically impacted by architecture. Flooring serves as a third facade, in addition to walls and ceilings. Free of structural constraint, Flight assists
with way-finding and defines movement – offering places to walk, places to pause and places to gather. Designed for public ambiance and engineered for heavy foot traffic, Flight provides a comprehensive flooring solution, featuring four 61cm x 61cm tile products that are varied yet connected. Available in 13 colours, the palette features warm and cool tones as well as bold colour options, which create varying degrees of movement and energy depending on how the styles are used within a space. Products include: • Pause Tile: a static style, defining quieter moments within space; • Step Tile: an ombre that exudes movement and can be stretched, injecting directional energy; • Interact Tile: a stripe, akin to a quickened stride – building scale, it directs
the eye and assists in way-finding; • Vantage Tile: a bold, geometric shape that adds a large glimpse of interest to the floor. All styles are 22 ounces and are constructed of EcoSolution Q fibre and EcoWorx backing, offering a lifetime commercial warranty covering abrasive wear, tuft bind, edge ravel and delamination. Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Silver, completely recyclable and manufactured with recycled content, all Flight products are 100% PVC and bitumen free and offer a sustainable flooring solution backed with an environmental guarantee for reclamation and recycling. Flight is also certified with the highest level of GECA certification and a Green Star ‘Level A’ product rating according to the Green Building Council of Australia.

All of the cashmere goat hair used in Tretford carpets is dyed without bleaching, which not only gives the carpets their stunning, naturally rich colours, it eliminates the use of
harmful toxins in the dying process. Mongolia, a foreign land whose name evokes a sense of mystery, provides most of the cashmere goat hair used in Tretford carpets. It is this raw material that guarantees the unmistakable quality and durability of Tretford products as well as the radiance of their colours.
Colours of Mongolia The new Tretford colour palette Colours of Mongolia has been inspired by the indigenous peoples, landscape, culture and rugged environment which nurtures the goats that produce this beautiful cashmere carpet. A point of difference New Zealand carpet maker Cavalier Bremworth has released a new felted wool carpet called Kennedy Point using their exclusive Radford felted yarn. Made in New Zealand using 100% sustainable New Zealand wool, it has a textured loop pile with an attractive feel and provides both durability and softness with the use of lambswool. The felted yarn has been cleverly constructed, incorporating random elements of the colour used in the contrasting woollen spun yarn. The mix of chunky felted yarn with this single ply yarn softens the linear design and creates a unique appearance. The result is attractive to the eye, paired with a comfortable underfoot experience. From classic neutral tones to a stunning duck-egg blue, Kennedy Point is sure to add a point of difference to any home. To celebrate its release, Cavalier Bremworth collaborated with designer Roanne Jacobson from Saben to create a limited edition blue leather tote bag – featuring Kennedy Point itself.

In a bold new move on the transformational journey to the circular economy, Desso, a leading global carpets and sports pitches company has developed a new material stream for its carpet tiles based on a partnership with a group of drinking water companies in the Netherlands. In collaboration with Reststoffenunie, an association of drinking water companies in the Netherlands, Desso has found a way to upcycle re-engineered calcium carbonate (chalk) from local drinking water companies. The chalk is positively defined in accordance with C2C criteria and is used for the production of Desso's carpet tiles with EcoBase backing, which is C2C Silver certified and 100% recyclable in Desso’s own production process. The result of this new innovation is that Desso’s products with EcoBase backing will now contain on average 50% positively defined recycled content. Desso is the first carpet company in the world to use the upcycled calcium
carbonate (chalk), co-created by Desso’s R&D team and its partners in the water industry. It expects to draw as much as 20,000 tonnes of chalk from this circular economy waste stream for its carpet tiles in partnership with the Dutch water companies. Desso has also launched its new Transitions collection with this positively defined recycled content. As a Cradle to Cradle company, Desso is committed to developing products that can be brought back and recycled in a non-toxic closed loop, the foundation for a regenerative circular economy. Through a rigid C2C assessment process, Desso strives to ensure its products consist of healthy materials, positive for human health and for the planet. The company vision is to develop environmentally responsible products that contribute to health and wellbeing in the built environment. This commitment to material health ensures that Desso realises this vision while its goods are in use and when they are being recycled.

Getting to the heart of the market Keen to maintain its reputation for innovation and for finding new, better, smarter ways to operate, Dunlop Flooring has decided to extend its product offering to the industry by launching its own range of hard flooring. Heartridge is a new collection of timber, laminate and vinyl plank flooring set to captivate the market with its style, quality and fashionable colour palette. “We reviewed various categories and markets to determine the best strategic fit to utilise our strengths and leverage our brand. The engineered timber, laminate and the luxury vinyl plank market has been identified as an excellent opportunity and a strong strategic fit,”

said Dunlop Flooring’s General Manager Sean Forde. “Consumer tastes are becoming more refined and influenced by global trends with European fashions and styles becoming more and more popular with the Australian consumer. In particular, the oak trend continues to gain momentum, especially in the longer and wider plank styles. That is why we have developed our new Heartridge Flooring ranges in a palette of fashionable colours and styles to suit even the most sophisticated consumer.” The name Heartridge was chosen to encompass the feeling of home (‘Home is
where the heart is’) – the brand conveys sophisticated simplicity, strength through stability, a robust nature and reliability – all elements synonymous with quality flooring, and those which are desirable for the home. By contrast, the use of the name Dunlop in the brand provides a feeling of security, emphasising its brand values of quality, dependability, reliability, value for money, trustworthiness and innovation. “We have taken time to understand our consumer and have invested in the development of our new brand Heartridge. The new brand tastefully leverages the Dunlop brand but doesn’t exploit it,” said Sean.
Sean believes that while there are many flooring products on the market, there is currently a lack of recognisable brands in Australia with only a handful of names that readily come to mind. “Dunlop is one of the most recognised brands in the world,” he said. “Using a recognisable brand has two distinct, immediate and powerful advantages – increased recognition that, in turn, leads to trust and increased awareness and cut-through that adds value. “We understand that our customers are very aware of the world around them and are design conscious. They are looking for modern sophistication and elegance. 28

With key companies in our group such as Bonds and Sheridan, we appreciate fashion and the seasonality of products,” he said. “This new brand differentiates us from our competitors; it is natural, earthy, stylish and fashionable. “We also know that our retail partners put a lot of emphasis on service, national delivery and product guarantees and would prefer a recognisable brand that they can trust. We currently offer next day delivery for underlay in all capital cities and have the ability to leverage this as we transition into hard flooring.”

Laminate
Laminate: more natural than ever Even in these times of rapidly-changing design trends, the wide variety of laminate flooring available on the market can satisfy the customer’s desire for individuality. With each new collection, the products are refined not only in visual terms, but also in their technical specification. At Domotex 2015 in Hannover, the European laminate flooring manufacturers grouped within the EPLF e.V. organisation, together with their suppliers, will once again be showing how they set the pace for the international flooring markets. The big furnishing trends for 2015 on the international markets are Shabby Chic,
Vintage and Scandinavian Style. In terms of interior design, originality, clarity of style and naturalness are in demand – and with their current laminate flooring designs, European manufacturers are already well equipped for this. Thanks to advanced printing and finishing techniques, the boards offer the perfect interplay between decor and texture. More defined printing with a strong three-dimensional effect gives the true-to-nature grain patterns of the decors a more authentic look and more vibrant colours. Whether brushed, sanded or rough sawn, the surface textures are always finished so as to be obvious to the touch.

The wood effects in laminate are presented in an overall calmer and more reserved way than in previous years: cracks and knots on the surface are rather less pronounced. The finishes range from high gloss through to semi-matte and matte low gloss effects in oiled wooden flooring style. In the stone decor range, there are authenticallyrecreated surfaces with highquality ceramic textures and the appearance of semi-matte or porous natural stone. The versatile oak decors continue to dominate the international range of laminates. However, other premium and natural design wood decors such as elm, ash, spruce, larch, walnut and pine are increasingly finding favour amongst buyers. 32

Extra-long length planks and effective multi-strip flooring
Laminate floors in XL format satisfy the trend for large, open space living areas, shown here in plank design with a natural softwood appearance. – Photo: Unilin/Quickstep
The current trend for open space living is satisfied by popular plank flooring, with even more choice provided by the extralong and extra-wide formats. These create the impression of generously-sized rooms and result in a beautiful floor pattern, as this setting lets the colours and textures of authentic wood decors really come into their own. Even with the extra-long single strip flooring two or more metres in length, there is still no distracting repeat effect in the decor; each individual plank looks like it has grown naturally. With the aid of intelligent click systems, even the XXL planks can be laid quickly and conveniently. In the multi-strip sector, European manufacturers have devised highly effective and elegant laminate flooring modelled on traditional laying patterns. They are playing in a creative way with the decorative, geometric possibilities of traditional parquet panels, but using a modern twist; for example, they are combining classic wood with stylish stone finish decors to produce the look of a mixed material. Special plank designs are also available and they are increasing the size of these versatile laminate flooring collections: moisture-repellent surfaces for use in kitchens and bathrooms are just as easy to find as are highly non-slip surfaces for use in entrance and work areas. www.eplf.com

Technology focus It’s the busy period again, everyone wanting their flooring installed prior to the arrival of the big fella in the red suite and the in-laws from interstate. This is generally the time of year sales are rocketing and you don’t have a minute to spare. This raises an interesting topic – how did we do it all prior to technology? The simple answer is more manpower and long hours. In general, the difference today is we do more with less resources and time if we choose not to adopt technology. Even if we avoid technology, it is an inescapable truth that we all rely on technology to keep up with the pace of life and business today. Most of us are oblivious to it and how much time it really does save. A recent trip to Melbourne to attend the finals for the Anthill Top 100 Cool company awards for 2014 highlighted the impact of technology, seen and unseen, on my time and ultimately how I felt by the end of the day. • A two hour drive to the airport through Sydney’s
peak hour traffic reduced to an hour and thirty minutes with GPS technology, digital road signs, radio announcement’s and traffic reports. • Dealing with customer support and inquiries whilst mobile, using mobile technology, email, cloud storage, mobile devices, hands free, mobile internet, wireless connections and Bluetooth.
• Parking at the airport with bay lighting indicating if the space is free or taken – one of the best things since sliced bread. I do, however, suspect the lights are made from ruby and emeralds given the prices charged for parking. • Airport security. I thought to myself, I wonder how long it would take to process all these people without x-ray technology and
metal detectors in today’s turbulent world. • Ticketing, no need to print tickets or even speak to anyone at the counters any more, just stick your smart phone in the scanner at the gate and your boarding pass appears. I won’t bore you with the rest of my trip, however, it does make you think how technology, seen or unseen, plays a big role in our everyday lives. MeasureSquare Mobile iPad and desktop estimation software is software designed to save you time, along with many other benefits we advertise. By the way I felt pretty bad by the end of the day – I had the flu, no tech answer for that yet. However, I would guess someone somewhere is working on it. As for the Anthill Top 100 Cool Company awards – we came fifth in our category and 24th overall. The fact we made the top 100 was enough for me. Gerflor lays foundations for cancer research Almost 100,000 m2 of Gerflor floor and wall vinyl are being installed inside Melbourne’s new Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC). The new $1 billion purpose built facility for cancer research and treatment will comprise 120,000 m2 over 13 levels on the site of the former Royal Dental Hospital in Parkville. Two bridges will link to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where a further 12,000 m2 of extensions and refurbishments are underway. The project will promote research into new cancer treatments, attract the nation’s leading cancer researchers and provide a centre of excellence for people affected by cancer. The Peter MacCallum Cancer

Centre will move into its new home at VCCC in 2016 where cancer research and clinical services will also be delivered by Melbourne Health and The University of Melbourne. Cheryl House is the interiors team leader for the landmark building that is now nearing completion. She, along with her teams, have the formidable task of choosing surfaces and finishes in materials and colours that will stand the test of time. Cheryl’s extensive experience designing for institutions and heavy traffic situations, including schools and airports, has heightened her understanding of the importance of choosing products that are appropriate for particular settings.
“VCCC is a tremendous opportunity to deliver a quality public health facility that will perform well for years to come and continue to be easy to maintain long term. As such, we need tried and tested products from well established, reputable firms that will preserve their high standards. “We choose products on the basis that they are appropriate for the application and place a great deal of emphasis on the technical properties of those product,” Cheryl said. A variety of Gerflor products are being installed in the VCCC including Tarasafe Ultra, Nera Contract Wood and Mipolam Robust EL7. The majority, however, is made up of new generation homogenous Gerflor Symbioz. Its low maintenance and environmental sustainability features, together with market leading stain resistance, equip it well for demanding settings including pathology and cytotoxic laboratories. But, according to Cheryl, other factors also influence product selection. “Colour is aligned to wellness and recovery. New products and technologies like Symbioz allow us to leverage the psychological benefits that colour can bring to a health care setting,” she said. “The colours available in the Gerflor’s Symbioz range are really beautiful – quite unique
and not easily replicated,” Cheryl said. Creating a comfortable, welcoming environment for patients is a priority for Cheryl and her team. “As well as selecting products that are absolutely appropriate for this setting we are also endeavoring to introduce all of those elements that provide a greater sense of comfort and a more relaxed environment, with a sense of domesticity about it. “The experience that people have of this building will obviously be influenced by the interiors. But a good health outcome is not limited by that. There’s also how the staff interact with you and each other and the lovely break out spaces and areas that support collaboration will really add value and have a positive impact on staff retention,” Cheryl said. Cheryl and the sthDI team will complete their work on the project at the end of 2015. Their legacy will endure well after that as patients and staff experience the features of this new integrated cancer research and treatment centre. “This is a landmark project that will bring together the largest concentration of cancer clinicians in the southern hemisphere. We are proud of the role we have played in bringing together one of the top 10 cancer centres in the world,” Cheryl said.

Transitions adds shine to redevelopment Projects are selected based on such factors as innovative construction techniques, use of innovative materials or products, cost-saving methods, innovative design, workmanship, environmental considerations, creativity, and aesthetics. Capri on Via Roma is a redevelopment of a waterfront shopping centre on the Isle of Capri, Gold Coast, Australia. The new shopping centre comprises 31 retail businesses including waterfront restaurants, cafes, fresh food and artisan providers and a supermarket, as well as fashion, beauty and lifestyle outlets. The Capri on Via Roma project had an extensive range of concrete flooring products throughout the internal, external and basement areas which were completed by Transitions Polishing and Grinding. This included around 14,000 m2 of diamond grinding to prepare all rain

damaged slabs; 1800 m2 of Transitions stained polished concrete floors throughout the internal mall; 1200 m2 of Transitions polished concrete in retail tenancies; 4200 m2 of Transitions honed stained concrete floors in the external pathways, entryways and external car parking lots and 7175 m2 of epoxy coating in the basement car park. The polished concrete floors throughout the project had very clear requirements in terms of design flexibility, performance and functionality. The concrete floor finishes had to have the ability to withstand high foot traffic on a constant basis whilst maintaining aesthetic appeal. It was also very important for Transitions to have the ability to install the chosen flooring products within a compressed construction timeframe, in stages, all whilst enabling other trades to complete their works during the installation phase.
Key features of the concrete flooring at Capri on Via Roma include:
• 7-10mm removed from the surface of severely raindamaged slabs and then mechanically grouted prior to works commencing; • R9 slip rating throughout internal areas and R11 on external areas; • UV stable coloured stain applied to Transitions honed concrete flooring (externally); • yellow coloured stain applied internally to create a bright, warm space and to fit in with shopping centre branding; • basement floor to encompass very good protective properties against oil leaks from vehicles; • all internal and external floors to be easy to maintain and within existing cleaning schedules.
FLOORChef has Baskin Robbins’ floors licked FLOORChef and Baskin Robbins have celebrated a successful custom flooring partnership with the recent grand openings of two new stores in West End and Manly, Brisbane. The projects were landmarks for the global ice cream giant as they introduced a series of interior design changes aimed at delivering a completely different customer experience. In a bold move away from the grey vinyl floor tile used in the past, they wanted a fresh start in the form of a
modern resin floor matching their new heritage wall colours. The task of customising such a floor fell to FLOORChef, who were approached on the back of their design knowledge and ability to work at a national level. With scope for many more stores to be done right across Australia in the near future, the choice of partner couldn’t be taken lightly. After many weeks of collaboration to hone in on just the right look and feel, a marbled Designer Dessert was created as the way
forward but the challenges didn’t stop there. Tight scheduling in the fit-outs meant installation had to be completed within three days and be ready for other trades to continue full-scale work less than 24 hours after: a tough assignment for any decorative flooring style.
FLOORChef’s Managing Director, Jack Josephsen, was extremely proud of floors they were able to deliver. “When you walk onto these floors the level of detail is astonishing and the colours tie in beautifully with the overall look Baskin Robbins was going for,” he said.

Give old concrete new life By Kennards Hire Concrete Care With its range of textures and natural rustic appeal, polished concrete has become one of the most highly sought-after of all floor finishes in recent years for home interiors and outdoor dining areas, cafes, showrooms, retail spaces and offices. At first glance a finished concrete floor surface is almost always referred to as polished concrete; however, there are varying types of finishes that can be achieved depending on the desired look and budget. These can simply be referred to as full gloss, semi-gloss and matt finish, each having its own range of benefits in its suitable environment and price ranges per square metre. The most prestigious of concrete finishes is the full gloss polished concrete with consistent stone exposure or plain grey. This features a superior reflective high

gloss finish, sealed with a penetrating sealer and requires the least amount of maintenance maximising its longevity and long term value benefits. Polishing concrete floors require a great deal of expertise and experience as well as specialist equipment. And just as there’s a difference in the final look of a polished concrete floor, there is also a difference in polishing techniques. Preparation is the most critical stage to achieving the preferred floor finish. This involves thoroughly removing any existing floorcovering or coating with scrapers, shot blasters or grinders. Polishing concrete involves the use of specialised heavyduty planetary machines equipped with diamondimpregnated disks. These machines work by grinding down the surfaces to the
desired level of exposure required and floor flatness, then gradually create a degree of shine and smoothness through the different grades of diamond resin disks. A dust collector is used throughout the process to eliminate airborne particles.
Topical coated concrete
Grinding a floor where a topical coating, such as an epoxy, will be applied to achieve the gloss finish is a faster and less expensive option. This requires just three grinds of different grades before the sealer is applied
and a standard concrete grinder can be used for this process. Initially 30/40 grit is used to achieve the desired exposed aggregate appearance, and then a 60/80 grit is used to remove the scratches from the first grind followed by a 120 grit. This creates a smooth surface with the correct adhesion profile and ensures the topical coating will bond to the floor.
Full polish
For full polish finishes, it’s essential to use grinders that are true planetary machines as these combine grinding, levelling and polishing the floor in order to attain a superior gloss finish A full gloss polish involves a combination of grinding then polishing the floor numerous times using finer grade of grinding stones through to polishing resins with the addition of a grouting step to close and fill any tiny holes, ensuring a tight finish. Although this method is more labour intensive, it seals the floor and achieves a water and stain resistant finish with a penetrating sealer applied. Equipment specialists from Kennards Hire Concrete Care can provide expert advice on polishing techniques, demonstrate how to use a machine as well as advise on which machine is ideally suited to your project.
The driving force to success Once upon a time. .. it was acceptable to be using hand held mixers on site levelling large concrete floor areas. But times have moved on and technology has changed. You may not have ever given it a second thought, but a contractor is rarely paid for the time it takes them to level a floor – only the finished result. That’s why the Mega Hippo mixer is the answer for production, cost effectiveness and flexibility on site. “It’s the only portable mixer of it’s size around, and the most effective for a wide range of levelling compounds, coatings, epoxies and other mixing products,” explained Naomi Archer of All Preparation Equipment. “It is undoubtedly the most versatile in its class.” All Preparation Equipment, a specialist team behind floor preparation, has worked with hundreds of contractors for coating types and materials – many and varied. From cement products, acrylics, resins and epoxies, all have been widely used for different purposes on a variety of substrates. While they all differ one from the other, there is usually one process required by them all: thorough on-site mixing. Correct mixing of construction coating materials is essential for the success of a product. It is often, however, the most neglected process. Hours are spent preparing a surface to which a coating is applied, then the whole job and profit can sometimes roll out the door by inadequate mixing of the applied product.
Following on from its popular predecessor, the Mega Hippo is the result of input from users and market-leading material producers in Australia, Europe and the United States. Already endorsed internationally for mixing cementitious selflevelers and coatings, the Mega Hippo now offers additional features and benefits to users. • Removable disposable liner: the flexible liner is ideal for resins and hard-to-clean materials – a quick, simple part to install and remove from the canister. The liner helps reduce downtime required for cleaning or can remove the need for special cleaning solvents on site. • Larger mixing canister: up to six 20kg bags or 80 litres of material can be mixed in the Mega Hippo canister meaning more production, more efficiency and more profit. • Larger mixing helix: faster mixing and increased performance for all materials including material containing decorative chip or fine grade pebble aggregate. The unique design ensures that all aggregate is evenly distributed throughout the mixture and not left sitting on the bottom of the mixing canister. This is especially important when mixing compounds with decorative aggregate for floors. • Dust extraction port: airborne dust can be a health hazard as well as an operational nuisance. The Mega Hippo has a special dust extraction hose connection port, which can be used on the standard canister or when a liner is fitted. Dust extraction will help reduce health risks and nuisance factors.

New stair nosings from Floorsafe Floorsafe Australia’s safety products have resulted in solving many safety issues over the past 28 years. They source and find suitable cost effective safety products to deal with every issue especially when it comes to complying with the new laws that have been introduced for stairway safety. “We are cost conscious and always consider affordability,” said Philip Zagni, Floorsafe’s Director. “There are many reasons why builders, contractors and architects chose our products because we focus on producing and providing quality and reliable solutions at an affordable cost.” Safety and long term wear factor is now being considered more than ever before. Rubber and like materials used for stair nosing inserts are slowly being replaced with carborundum inserts. On external stairways where pedestrian safety
becomes of paramount concern carborundum offers the best grip and wear factor. Floorsafe Australia has seen an 80% increase since they introduced and offered a fully coated carborundum insert in place of the usual PVC rubber serrated insert. For some time a high cost stair nosing product has been available that incorporates four or more carborundum strips rebated into several styles of aluminium profiles. An excellent product but beyond most contractors budgets. Floorsafe Australia with its aluminium partners have addressed the costs and now have a range of very affordable carborundum stair nosings that meets the requirements of the Australian standards and building code of Australia. Neatly rebated hard wearing carborundum strips are moulded into a high quality aluminium profile, which is also anodized for extra protection.
