RFMS Wins FCN's Award of Excellence RFMS was awarded winner of the Technology category at the Awards of Excellence dinner hosted by Floor Covering News and The International Surfaces Event in Garden City, New York, on September 30, 2021. The Award of Excellence is voted via a survey sent to retailers, manufacturers, and vendors throughout the flooring industry. This was the 25th Anniversary of the awards celebration; however, this was the first year to include Technology as a category. RFMS was recognised as Best In Class for Technology in the flooring industry.
Representatives from the top manufacturers and suppliers were present, and Madeleine Bayless, President and CEO of RFMS, said, "It was a privilege to accept the award on behalf of all the team members at RFMS who make our products and clients so successful!" Chris Ogden commented that the award reinforced RFMS Australasia's experience distributing and supporting RFMS products; “every day we have thousands of people across Australia and New Zealand using RFMS products to help them be more effective and successful”.

More than human Tarkett’s new carpet tile collection combines neutrals and colours to bring tactility and serenity to the workplace To compliment the fast-paced digital environment of workplaces, Tarkett have launched their stylish and innovative More Than Human collection, featuring the DESSO Serene and Serene Colour carpet tiles. These 100 per cent recyclable carpet tile collections offer architects and designers complete design flexibility and allow for colour to be built as desired.
Whilst developing the DESSO Serene and Serene Colour collections for the workplace, Tarkett’s designers took inspiration from embracing the demanding world of technology and the science of how people as biological beings respond and react to their surroundings. Tarkett wanted to demonstrate how individual colours and combinations affect people, and how the tactile nature of soft materials can make employees feel calmer while in their work environment. Design and flexibility Designed specifically to apply a muchneeded human touch to workplace interiors,
the subtle pattern of DESSO Serene and Serene Colour takes creative cues from the serenity of watercolour paintings. Available in a rich palette of nine neutral tones, DESSO Serene scales from cool, calming shades to warm and friendly hues. Part of the More Than Human collection, DESSO Serene appeals to the senses, with each of its unique components embodying tactility, and most importantly, offering adaptability. Complementing the organic nature of Serene, the Serene Colour collection features eight accent tones, allowing designers the flexibility to deliver a more understated scheme, made up of neutral tones, or choose to inject vibrancy through a seamless evolution from Serene to Serene Colour. The DESSO Serene Colour designs are not solid but feature an ombre-like colour transition that matches perfectly with a neutral design from the DESSO Serene collection. This allows for colour to be personalised to fit the client’s desires, ensuring fluidity between individual interior spaces and more open spaces. The collection is designed in line with the Tarkett Human-Conscious Design approach, which aims to deliver safer and healthier spaces in which people can reach their full potential. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, both carpet tile collections provide a truly sustainable solution. The products are 100 per cent recyclable* in Tarkett’s own carpet

recycling centre, made from 100 per cent regenerated ECONYL yarn and Cradle to Cradle Certified Silver level. The tiles also come with EcoBase backing as standard, which contains an average of 80 per cent upcycled chalk sourced from local water providers.
Ludwig Cammaert, Design & Technical Development Director at Tarkett, said: “We live in a world that is changing at such a rapid pace, with workplaces adapting to constant advances in technology. Because of this we wanted to create a sensory collection that brings serenity and a calming feel to the workplace, and More Than Human does just that! With a plethora of colours and gradients, the More Than Human collection offers endless possibilities to create modular spaces and brighten up workplace interiors.”

Patricia Urquiola collaborates with Bolon Bolon introduces a new collaboration collection, together with the influential architect and designer, Patricia Urquiola. The Swedish design company has for a long-time admired Patricia’s designs.
Bolon is a Swedish design company that makes innovative flooring solutions for public spaces. It is a third-generation family business run by sisters Annica and Marie Eklund. Under their leadership, Bolon has transformed from a traditional weaving mill into an international design brand with clients such as Armani, Google, Four Seasons Hotels, Chanel, Adidas, Apple and Missoni.
"For many years, Marie and I have dreamt of collaborating with Patricia. Her aesthetic appeals to us and it really is a dream come true to introduce the Bolon by Patricia Urquiola collection to the world. Her great sense for colour is reflected in the collection and has led to a new palette that doesn't exist in our existing range. We are proud to add Patricia to our portfolio of Bolon friends", says Annica Eklund, Chief Creative Officer at Bolon. While working on the collection, Patricia found a resemblance between the weaving technique of Bolon flooring and the Japanese tradition of Sashiko stitches. By developing, experimenting and combining Bolon with Sashiko, the colours, patterns and designs came naturally. Bolon by Patricia Urquiola is a high-end design collection with soft colours, characteristic stitching details and patch-like patterns.
"Sashiko means craftsmanship, a sense of materiality. When we started to work on this collection, we wanted to give the flooring a more authentic feel. We started researching, as we do for all textiles, but applied the approach to weaving techniques. We wanted to communicate cosiness, a feeling of warmth, and Sashiko came up as the leading concept for the collection. I think it worked out really well", says Patricia Urquiola. Bolon by Patricia Urquiola consists of one design that comes in four colours; grey, beige with blue details, a clay coloured pink and a calm green. Available in roll format and made in Sweden, the collection contains recycled material, is easy to maintain, has a high-performance classification 33 heavy commercial and a 15 years warranty.
With a strong commitment to sustainability, Bolon designs and manufactures all collections at a facility in Ulricehamn, Sweden. The company is recognised worldwide for its awardwinning flooring and its collaborations with some of the world’s most acclaimed innovators and creatives.
The collection is now available worldwide, and is a perfect flooring for office spaces, hotels, retail stores, hospitality venues and education spaces. The characteristic three-dimensional look of Bolon flooring adds a tactile feel to any interior with the highest technical performance in every square meter.

Apprenticeships – now a necessity Article by Fiona Wischnewski, CEO FCIA Ltd
A
s everyone is acutely aware the Flooring Industry is in the grips of a chronic skills and labour shortage when it comes to installers and there is no quick fix to this problem.
a well-paid industry that can lead to a number of different and interesting career opportunities.
Our members in the flooring industry all have the same concerns “Not enough tradesmen, trades assistants or apprentices – we need more professional installers.”
As apprentices are generally new to both the industry and business, it allows you to train them to understand how your business operates and mould them into quality installers. Significant government support is available to employers making it cost effective to engage an apprentice right now. The flooring industry is a hardworking industry that can offer apprentices an opportunity to learn a trade that can give them skills and knowledge to build a successful career as well as be a part of the solution to the skills shortage issue we are currently facing.
“We lack qualified trainers to upskill the flooring industry.” “There is a lack of installers and too many of the existing ones lack qualifications.” “We are facing a critical skills and labour shortage, very difficult to overcome without opening up Visas and skilled immigration.” “Too much reliance on subcontractors – direct employment provides reliability, and confidence that you have a core group of capable, loyal installers.” So how does the industry resolve this problem? The lasting solution is apprenticeships. Traditionally the industry isn’t licensed, it hasn’t seen apprenticeships as a necessity, but many businesses are now seeing the benefit apprentices can provide not only to the business itself but to the industry in general.
Whilst everyone thinks flooring installation can be done by anyone, the industry knows all too well this is not the case. Ensuring that all future installers are properly trained, and qualified means businesses are able to sell more flooring product and have the confidence that it will be installed correctly. This in turn will reduce the number of complaints that are made each year.
With very little new blood coming through the industry, employing an apprentice is one way of introducing new people into

for many years. And it is versatile, constantly evolving in a vast range of styles, colours, patterns and materials which offers consumers a wide range of options.
C
arpet in Australian homes is as traditional as weatherboards are on our outside walls. This wonderful floor covering has been evolving with us since the first carpet runners were hand tacked into our hallways back in the 1930’s. Wall to wall carpet surged in demand as Australia prospered through the 50’s and 60’s to become a necessity in any luxury home. This age was the heyday of locally made products and a strong Australian carpet manufacturing industry had sprung up using local wools to support booming carpet sales. By the early 1990s carpet’s dominance in our homes began to peak when it was estimated to represent up to 75% of all floor covering sales. But slowly other coverings began to appear, and the share of the floor devoted to carpet
With all this innovation, carpets premier position among floor coverings is unlikely to fade, despite ongoing challenges. The most obvious of these is the misperceptions about carpet hygiene and complaints from dust mite allergens. Quite remarkably we humans are constantly shedding skin, much of which forms the basis of household dust. To maintain good hygiene household dust needs be vacuumed away on a regular basis. When it is not removed it can become a source of nutrient for dust mites which are known to create human allergens.
began to decline. The 1990’s saw a growth in imports of many kinds and floor coverings were no exception. Many new floor coverings like ceramic tile, plank and laminate, initially came from Europe and America, but more recently they have been sourced from North Asian manufacturers. Throughout all this change carpet has remained the single most ubiquitous covering in our homes and for obvious reasons. No other covering has the properties or the versatility that carpet can offer. The most obvious of these advantages is that carpet is soft and comfortable under foot, creating a feeling of luxury that sets it apart from other floor coverings. This comfortable cloth we walk on has great insulating properties that help keep our homes warm. It is also highly a durable fabric that wears well
Flooring December 2021/January 2022
All floor coverings require regular cleaning to remove dust and other dirt, and carpet is no exception. Carpet is unique because the dust can easily be hidden within the fibre where it quickly settles below the surface and out of site. When this household dust is not vacuumed away it can create another place for dust mites and their allergens multiply. All this is easily remedied by regular cleaning with a strong vacuum, but when this simple maintenance is not undertaken regularly carpet can be unfairly blamed for harbouring dust mites and their allergens.

The other challenge facing carpet is its relative cost compared to other imported floor coverings. It is no surprise that the growth of alternate floor coverings is correlated to their low cost. In response, carpet manufactures work hard to innovate new cost effective versions of carpet by incorporating new textiles or recycled materials and changing their manufacturing processes.
And as carpet itself changes the accessories that BBS makes to install these new styles has also evolved.
unique diagonal design has been developed to provide greater holding power for the same stiff backed carpets.
Hot melt tapes have had to be reformulated to reduce smoke and odour so they can be used with confidence in domestic homes and to increase their heat resistance for use in modern apartments. Carpet grippers of differing pin heights have been introduced to match the changing internal construction of carpets and different thicknesses of gripper (from flat to 9mm) have been built to cope with installations over varying thicknesses of underlay.
Adaptation is nothing new for carpet. It has reinvented itself many times since the first runners were installed in hallways. Obvious examples of these changes are direct stick and double bond versions or the carpet tiles that dominate our commercial environment. Some more niche examples are the sold backed products used in nursing homes or some innovative attempts to use recycled plastics as backings.
Carpet gripper has become wider for use with stiffer carpet backings as synthetics have replaced jute and other natural fibres in the backings. Better pinning patterns like BBS’s
Through all this change in fashion and demand carpet has dominated as the king of Australian floor coverings. It keeps it relevance because of its unique features and the way it evolves to suit our modern needs.

Vacuum cleaners – crucial air and carpet care
T
he beauty and life of carpet depends on the care it receives. Proper vacuuming with the correct vacuum cleaner is the easiest and most effective way to keep carpet clean and looking good. Regular vacuuming can also have the largest impact on the air you breathe by removing dust, dirt, allergens, and particles.
vacuum cleaners with specially designed SEBO ET1 powerheads allow the user to switch the brush roller off for straight suction cleaning and 4-level brush height adjustment with uniquely crafted optional Delicate Brush Roller (5010GE) for gentle and effective removal of loose fibres and fuzz from the looped surface. • Heavyweight Cut Pile Twist / Plush - With large wheels, glide plates, efficient air flow, height adjustable brush rollers and high-performance filtration the SEBO X7 Boost Upright (91542AU) is recommend.
Vacuuming carpet properly is easier than you might think. All it takes is a little knowledge about how to select the right vacuum cleaner for the carpet style and fibre. Vacuuming 101 There is not one vacuum type to suit all carpets commercial or residential. Carpet Manufacturers in their Care Guides often list favourable vacuum cleaner features that best suit their style and fibre of carpet.
According to the Carpet Institute of Australia Limited (CIAL) 85% of dirt in carpet is dry dirt and can be removed by effective vacuuming. Each vacuum pass should overlay the previous pass by 5cm. SEBO Vacuum Cleaners Pairing program helps your staff identify the correct vacuum cleaner that will effectively clean carpet right from installation. SEBO Pairing SEBO is no ordinary vacuum cleaner supplier their niche is the ability to identify and provide vacuum cleaners with specific features best suited to particular carpet styles and fibres, it’s referred to as Pairing. If your sales staff are nervous to provide vacuum cleaner recommendations, let SEBO guide them with these top Pairing tips: • 100% Wool Loop – Carpet Manufacturers recommend the SEBO K3 Premium Barrel (9682AU) and SEBO Felix Premium Upright (9809AU)

Clean Air A well-maintained carpet can help to purify the air by reducing indoor pollutants. SEBO floorcare is of anti-allergy design ideal for Asthma and Allergy sufferers - an Approved Partner of the Sensitive Choice Program. 5 Reasons you can’t go past Cashmere Touch for your home
T
Colour Choices: Whether you’re looking for stylish neutral tones or colour-rich carpets – Cashmere Touch offers something for every kind of home. Buyers now have access to a vast selection of colour options across a wide assortment of ranges for bedrooms, living-dining spaces and stairways.
he Cashmere Touch collection of nylon carpets offer unparalleled luxury, providing a stylish yet comfortable foundation for your home. Not only that, but it is also durable, easy to clean and can endure varying degrees of foot traffic. Here we explore 5 reasons why the Cashmere Touch range is a must-have in your home. Luxurious yet durable: Coming back home to a feeling of plush, silky softness underfoot is the ultimate luxury. With the Cashmere Touch® collection, you’ll be able to design spaces that not only look and feel beautiful to touch but are also hardwearing, robust and heavy-duty, catering to the needs of busy families. The collection features a mix of solution-dyed nylon (SDN) and Signature’s Colour Guard® nylon fibres – offering buyers some of the softest and most resilient carpets in the market.
Ease of Maintenance: Nylon carpets clean exceptionally well. In fact, wet cleaning is possible (and recommended through a professional) as fibres don’t absorb water like wool. For day-to-day upkeep, thorough and frequent vacuuming is all you need to prolong your carpet’s life and enhance its appearance.
UV Resistance: Whether solution-dyed or Colour Guard treated nylon – both carpet fibres boast enhanced colour longevity. While SDN has colour all the way through the yarn, which helps these carpets deliver long-lasting vibrancy, white nylon carpets are treated with Colour Guard, making them resistant to fading and sun damage. This exclusive treatment bonds permanently with the carpet’s fibres during the manufacturing process creating a colour shield protective barrier. Lay your Cashmere Touch carpets in sunny lounges and bedrooms without worry. Child and Pet Friendly: Cashmere Touch carpets are stain and soil-resistant, making them an excellent floor covering in homes with children. Carpets will maintain their quality while also retaining their appearance. Claws are also less likely to get caught in these fibres – they’re ideal for use with pets at home.

Forbo in the World Article by Philip Ashley Forbo Flooring Systems contribute to creating better indoor environments and healthier buildings by designing products and collections with a focus on human health, supplying floor coverings that are functional, safe, comfortable, and environmentally friendly. In 1928 three linoleum manufacturers from Germany, Switzerland and Sweden formed the Continental Linoleum Union. These were some of the earliest manufacturers of products that are still produced on the same sites today. In 1974 the company was renamed Forbo to reflect the wider portfolio of activities they had developed. Forbo Floor Covering products are now manufactured in France, The Netherlands, Switzerland, The United Kingdom and also in Russia. There are fifteen manufacturing sites. Forbo in Australia – Sixty years ago The original Australian head office, Forbo Krommenie, was in Wayville South Australia offering linoleum and Bulletin board products. In 1987 the company name officially changed to Forbo Australia, and the head office relocated to Silverwater NSW due to rising population, demand, and transport routes. In 1993 more products were offered

span and reach across Australia and New Zealand. PR floors in QLD, George Low in Victoria and NSW and Duroloid for Bulletin Board products are some of the longest standing relationships.
In the early days Forbo had around 75 full time staff and a sales office in every state. Forbo imported floorcoverings from their various factories, and wallcoverings from Mayfair, Kingfisher in the UK, and Salubra from Germany. One import aspect of the Forbo business and wide product offer was the need to have distribution partners to
These strong partnerships continue today through George Low, Flooring Distributors of Australia (FDA) and Inzide in New Zealand. Currently Forbo help employ around 65 staff nationally through their exclusive regional distributors, sales agents and the direct Forbo team. Along with great products manufactured by some of the first flooring factories founded in the early 1900’s, the people at Forbo play a key role in the company’s success. Historically with a mix of European and now local leadership. The Brand Forbo is an overarching name for a number of well-known factory brands from yesteryear including Nairn, Novilon, Marmoleum, 32 Step and Flotex. These original products

Fit for purpose in libraries and learning spaces Flotex is truly different to any other type of textile flooring in terms of wear resistance and clean-ability. This is due to the precision-driven and unique manufacturing process and pile density of up to 80 million fibres per m, along with the impermeable, washable backing.
There is a reason Flotex is used in libraries and learning spaces. No other textile product can provide the same level of wear resistance under heavy and constant rolling loads and still look good as new as if it were the first day it was installed.
30% more soil is released from Flotex when vacuuming and it has a faster drying time than loop pile carpets. Machine cleaning options mean less down time for high use areas and a reduced risk of slip. Additionally, allergy friendly benefits make Flotex particularly suited to high-traffic learning spaces.

32 Celebrating 60 Years Forbo is well known for retaining employees over decades, recruiting from within for those looking for advancement. Some of the team have spent a lifetime with Forbo and have made the company in Australia what it is today. Tom Nguyen, Finance director started with Forbo nearly 34 years ago! He has worked in most of Forbo’s facilities worldwide and it’s fair to say he knows Forbo inside out. Tom said, “I love the job, the people, and the way we do business the Australian way, for Australian customers.”
Above: Photography Matthias Groppe, Paderborn have evolved or have been superseded with new technology. Marmoleum is possibly the oldest known floorcovering dating back to the late 1800’s and is still strong today. Marmoleum has a bright future given the natural raw materials that grow, and the ability to manufacture it in a carbon neutral way from cradle to gate. European design trends and fashion drives the product offer. The design and quality of Forbo products has always been the defining factor for interior designers, architects, and homeowners, and the reason behind Forbo’s success. Additionally, supplying sustainable products not available or manufactured in Australia. Forbo have maintained most of their original manufacturing sites in Europe close to raw material supply chains, investing heavily in technological expansion while other suppliers have moved flooring production and supply to Asia. Digital printing technology is now available across three production lines and product types. Furthermore, a new homogenous vinyl production line at Forbo’s Netherlands facility allowed the company to successfully lift the design offer in this category. A Sustainable, Circular Economy The principles of the circular economy are at the heart of Forbo’s Sustainability
Strategy. To ensure this strategy meets the demands of the future, Forbo created a five year program with clear goals. This effort isn’t limited to looking at the way products are manufactured, or raw materials are sourced and harvested. It’s a program which goes well beyond the cradle to gate stages of the product life cycle and includes Forbo’s ambitions on reuse and recycling, take back schemes, and pilots for retrieving postconsumer floor coverings.
One example is energy transition. Forbo are already using 100% green electricity in production. The company aims to find alternatives to natural gas and are experimenting with biogas. Their Sustainability Strategy builds on what has been done before and keeps the three P’s (people, planet, profit) as a base line. It was also built on Forbo’s principle of the four R’s (reduce, reused, renew, and recycle) and the successful efforts of creating healthy environments for customers.

Con Diomis, NSW Trade Accounts Manager has been with Forbo almost as long as Tom. He said, “Working at Forbo is a privilege, so many fantastic products and people to work with, including architects, designers, flooring contractors and end users.” Cheryl Pearce works in Accounts Payable. She said, “Over 21 years I have seen many changes in product lines, new systems implemented and many friendly people to work with and represent the company.” John Liston (known to many as Thumper) is a Senior Architectural Consultant and has been with Forbo for 23 years in a number of key roles. He says, “New floor coverings keep improving and have taken the specification sector to another level. I am proud to be associated with wonderful projects, colleagues and our fabulous clientele.” Forbo Australia is a company invested not only in its people, but in their customers, the environment but mostly, in Australia.

Andersens Browns Plains

ith more than 36 years’ experience in the flooring industry, Karle Walton has finally made the leap into store ownership with Andersens, after reviewing the benefits of either joining a brand or operating as an independent. Hailing from Bolton in the U.K, Karle worked in his family business as an installer. You could say flooring is in his DNA, so opening his own store was a natural progression for Karle, after moving to Australia. With a comfortable 20-minute south-east drive from Brisbane, Browns Plains offers the opportunity for both residential and
commercial work. A high growth area, Browns Plains has more than $84 million in approved future development earmarked. “We wanted to be part of a known brand, something that has survived the test of time and the support we were provided with from day one,” said Karle “…having Andersens in our corner means that we can focus on our customers and build our business for our family,” added Karle. Karle’s innate alignment with all of the Andersens’ values, made this union a perfect fit as he has been installing for the group for many years and knew that the culture and team is something he wanted to be part of.

“The opportunity to open my own store, was always on my mind,” said Karle and “…being attracted to what the brand stands for was a determining factor.” Karle didn’t hesitate to mention that he was impressed with Andersens ‘Project Green’ and the 100,000 trees which have been planted in the past 12 months. Climate change is top of mind and it needs to be, so I am proud to stand behind a project that is improving the future of our younger generation and especially my children’s future.
A company’s culture is of course a very important factor in deciding on a brand and Karle feels connected to Andersens. “Warm, friendly, supportive and knowledgeable,” he said, “… you feel like part of a family and this relates back to Andersens foundations over 60 years which is built on country town values.” Of course, the feeling is mutual and we’re excited and proud to have Karle and the wonderful Browns Plains team join the family. Watch this space, we’re sure that Karle will be kicking goals in the very near future.
Of course, opening a new store and making the transition to store owner takes a lot of hard work. … the hard work has been worthwhile, we love how the store looks, the layout and that we are inspiring customer with our design,” said Karle “We’re very excited to present the new design to our customers, and we’re very proud to be one of the flagship stores using the Image 2025 design.” Karle believes that having the entire floor covered in products, gives customers a wonderful shopping experience. “Customers just love the fresh Hamptons inspired store design,” Karle said.

Improve your business - Control the sales pipeline (CRM) Article by Chris Ogden
M
ost flooring retailers are enjoying good sales presently. Even record sales. Right now, we might not be giving much thought to how effective our salespeople are because we are struggling to get it installed. Sadly, we can’t rely on this situation to be the case forever. In fact, forecasts indicate the market will cool over the coming 12 months. We want to establish good sale processes now, so we don’t get caught out. Do we know how many leads our salespeople are working with at any given time? How many potential clients have taken samples, and how many have had us measure? Do we know the reasons leads are lost? Do we know the conversion rate for our business and each of our salespeople? If so, you have good control of your sales pipeline. Unfortunately, very few flooring retailers have this level of visibility into their sales process. Most retailers have good control of the operational aspects of their business, but most are operating blind when it comes to sales. My own experience in flooring retail was that we grew our business by focussing hard on the sales to quotes conversion rate. It was a key measure by which we measured our salespeople, and it was key to growing our sales year on year.
Do we know the conversion rate for your business and each of our salespeople?
In the early years, our systems were largely manual; I still had blind spots in my sales process. I could calculate the conversion rate of quotes to sales and calculate the dollar value conversion rate. While these were very powerful data points, they overlooked how effectively we converted all leads into sales. I didn’t know how many potential customers my salespeople talked to, took samples, and how many agreed to a measure. I didn’t know how many opportunities we were burning or why they were burned. Not only did I not have visibility on this information, neither did my salespeople. Our salespeople are arguably the most critical element in our business, but we don’t give them the tools to be effective, and we don’t readily have the means by which to measure their effectiveness. Flooring specific IT systems have given flooring retailers the ability to better see and understand what is happening in sales. Until recently, however, there has
Flooring December 2021/January 2022
been a gap. There hasn’t been a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool specific to flooring that integrated with a flooring specific business management system.
…forecasts indicate the market will cool over the coming 12 months. We want to establish good sale processes now, so we don’t get caught out. If you want to get better control of your sales pipeline and if you want to give your salespeople the tool they need to sell more efficiently and effectively, you need to be looking at a CRM tool that will work in your business. They are not new. The challenge has been they are generic, can be overly complex for our needs, and are expensive. Also, the data these CRM tools collect sits outside of our business management system leading to expensive customisation or double handling of data.

A Tight Knit Team Article by Philip Ashley

atthew Cassidy is the new director of Andersens Flooring in Stafford, just a few kilometres north of Brisbane CBD. The store is the largest in the Andersens network and was established by Jack Andersen himself to service the commercial sector in the rapidly developing city of Brisbane. For 27 years it has been trading from the same location. The previous owner, Greg Comino, retired late this year to spend time with his grandchildren, among other things. Greg had managed the store for around twenty years and decided to go out on top, paving the way for Matthew to lead the full-time crew of twenty people into their next chapter. Andersens Stafford is one of the busiest flooring outlets in Australia with an average output of twenty jobs every day. Two thirds of their work is for the commercial sector, an unusually high number but given the location, not surprising. Matthew took over the store November first this year, having come from the commercial sector, managing projects for major retail outlets such as Coles, Woolworths, and Bunnings. A civil engineer by profession, Matthew is well suited to the particular corporate focus of Andersens Stafford and is well placed to continue Greg’s work and build on his legacy.
a person I knew to be passionate and proud; his wife Anastasia, and the people who have worked so hard to make the store what it is today. It will be an exciting time here in Brisbane building up to the 2032 Olympics, coupled with the mass migration we are experiencing in Queensland due in part to the low housing prices.” Matthew had moved from Sydney to Brisbane in 2007 where he’d been working as a civil engineer on wastewater projects. In the following years he got married, started a family and early this year was looking for a change. Considering a franchise opportunity, Matthew noticed the Andersens name popping up frequently. He knew Andersens had a really good reputation in both domestic and commercial markets and speaking to people from Andersens head office, the Stafford store came up, along with Greg’s name. Matthew had known Greg for some time through contact at De Luca Corporation where Greg had done Nic De Luca’s home, and it all clicked from there.
Matthew’s history with project managing large commercial jobs was an ideal ‘apprenticeship’ in the lead up to the Andersens outlet in Stafford. Twenty full time staff members plus a host of subcontractors starting a new job on average every two hours is no mean feat and demands everyone is communicating freely to ensure the work is done to the satisfaction
The rich heritage that is Andersens Stafford is embodied in the culture of its people. Five of the twenty full-time employees have over ninety years of experience between them! Matthew says, “There’s no other store like it. When I came on board my personal challenge was to respect the heritage and continue the legacy handed to me by Greg,

Retailer of the Month of both their domestic, and commercial clients. Matthew says, “I enjoy listening; everyone has a contribution to make.” It’s a characteristic of modern business leaders to engage with their people, especially those emotionally engaged in the business. Andersens Stafford has always been a family business. Greg’s wife Anastasia is said by some to have been more critical to the business than Greg himself, such is the nature of partners who share the workload. Over the years many family members worked at the store doing various jobs but it’s people like long-term employees such as Trent, Derek, Lex, Damian, Bruce, and Anthony to name just a few, who have made

the business what it is today. Matthew is passionate about training and skilled trades and while he has the positive opinion the industry is strong; he is concerned about the lack of people coming into the trade. He says the situation could get worse in the short term and that the industry needs to attract people with a solid career path. He is currently looking for four apprentices. Outside of the industry, Matthew spends his time looking after his two young children with his wife, and he also does some offshore sailing. He doesn’t own a boat of his own but crews for a friend. To date he’s done ten Sydney to Hobart races, and coastal events like the Brisbane to Gladstone.
He says there are some crossovers between yachting and operating a flooring outlet, like prior preparation; being systematic; assessing all the conditions and understanding the strength and weaknesses of not only yourself, but your entire crew; or in the case of a flooring store, your team. “Yachting is a tight-knit community,” Matthew says, just like the team at Andersens Stafford.

Clever Choice Design Floors
C
lever Choice Design Floors was founded in 2003. With passion, drive, extensive product knowledge, expertise, and understanding of customers’ needs, Clever Choice became a force in the Australian flooring industry and gave rise to Clever being a household name in flooring. The company began as an importer/ wholesaler of indoor floating floors with a B2B supply chain, specialising in solid bamboo. In 2019 Paxwood Pty Ltd acquired Clever Choice Design Floors and continued its commitment to quality first in flooring research and development. Over the years, the Clever Choice brand has grown to include many signature products and prestigious collections. Clever Choice holds preferred supplier status with major retail chains such as Floorworld, Flooring Xtra and Andersens and many timber flooring focused independent retail and commercial outlets throughout Australia.
The Clever Choice team is unique in the way that all staff, from their warehouse staff to their senior management are extremely passionate about flooring and possess extensive product knowledge. By knowing all aspects of the origin of their flooring, through the harvesting and manufacturing all their staff understand and know how each product will perform in many different environments. They ensure suitability for purpose and supply the best flooring solution for each individual customer’s needs. Their sales and accounts office is based on the Gold Coast, and the warehouse is located in the heart of Sydney in Auburn, a great central location for ease of dispatch for all national clients.
The future Due to the recent growth Clever Choice has seen over the past few years, they are very excited for the year ahead. As we head into 2022, big things are being planned for the future of their company. In January 2022 they will be opening a new Warehouse Head Office in Yatala, Queensland to support their predicted continued growth and help service all their customers to a greater capacity. Along with this they have planned a number of new product lines that will be released over the next year to provide an even larger range to fit each individual’s needs.
Commercial work Part of the recent growth has come from the uptake that they have seen in developing commercial projects. Over the last couple of years, they have been given more and more opportunities to work with commercial clients to provide their signature Clever Choice floors in developments all around the country. This ranges from the Waterford Valley Golf Club where they supplied the Clever Bamboo in Champagne for their brand-new townhouses, to their collaborative work with

Better spaces from the floor up
W
ith over three decades in the flooring industry, Floorworld continues to deliver better spaces from the floor up so their members, customers and community can live better in the spaces they are in. The last year and a half gave Floorworld the opportunity to focus on what their customers want in dealing with a business. So, Floorworld asked and listened, and heard that consumers wanted to deal with companies that supported their community and Australian businesses. The result was a specially Australian designed and manufactured unit that promotes the product of their preferred suppliers. Throughout their stores, various units differentiate each brand on display making it both impressive and easy for the salesperson to show carpet samples and the ease of customers to make a choice.
Floorcovering Association of Victoria Inc.
Floorworld funds this project and to date has invested almost $350,000 in the merchandising modular concept with Floorworld subsidising half and members using their rebates to pay for their share. The pandemic has completely changed the way we live, do business and work. Floorworld recognises their role in supporting their local and corporate communities and has partnered with Pancare Foundation, a cause close to their history and is worthy of their support.
About FAV The principal role of the Floorcovering Association of Victoria is to represent the Interests of the floorcovering industry in Victoria. A year of growth
D
espite all the challenges of 2021, it has been a year of growth for Flooring Xtra. They have added seven new stores to the network, bringing store numbers to over 90 locations nationally. Since the beginning of 2021, Flooring Xtra have opened stores in the following locations: Hunter Valley, Wangaratta, Castle Hill, Cranbourne, Nunawading, Merimbula and Thomastown, allowing them to broaden their service areas throughout New South Wales and Victoria. From company stores to those that are owner operated, Flooring Xtra have built a foundation of industry knowledge, expertise and business successes that can be shared amongst the network, building a culture of trust and mutual respect. Both franchisees and the support office work together toward a common goal, creating a fabulous experience for customers. With the continual growth of this business, it is evident that their efforts are being well received by the public as one of Australia’s fastest growing Flooring brands. The Flooring Xtra Way Joining Flooring Xtra as a franchisee can be compared to joining a family. Hunter Valley Flooring Xtra owner, Dave Sherlock, claims “Right from the outset I loved the family friendly atmosphere that Flooring Xtra
nurtured. This starts from the very top. They genuinely care for their people.” After 25 years in the flooring industry, in both a retailer and supplier role, he felt as though Flooring Xtra was the right fit for his business based on the support he is provided from the whole team. “We are absolutely spoilt when it comes to support from the Support Office, whether it be, marketing, financial or just morale boosting conversations”, says Dave. They go the extra mile to ensure the success of the Flooring Xtra stores, by providing mentoring and support to guide their franchisees through each stage of their business’ journey. Why Flooring Xtra? The Flooring Xtra community is like no other. They genuinely care for and wish to

see each of their franchisees succeed and are dedicated to helping them do so. Dave Sherlock describes his experience with Flooring Xtra by saying, “I can’t speak highly enough of my experience with Flooring Xtra. They have absolutely changed my life in a way I never thought possible.”
Through the continued support of the Flooring Xtra family he says that “Although I own my own business, I am part of a much bigger team, a team that is striving for a common goal.” Another Franchisee, Kevin from Cranbourne and Rosebud Flooring Xtra says, “We have been really happy and very impressed with the Flooring Xtra franchise model, it has been so good to us that we went on to open a second shop.” “My intention was always to be with a company that allows you to grow and expand.” This is what Flooring Xtra is all about and this is what they pride themselves on.
