Ecquality Timber Products, Tenth Anniversary Celebration We all know that China is going to continue to play a big part in our lives well into the future. One small Aussie company took on the “China challenge ten years ago when it set up its whollyowned solid-wood flooring operation two hours west of Shanghai. At the time the company was mostly processing Australian Cypress for the Japanese market. On September 15, 2008 Lehman Brothers filed for bankrupcy in New York precipitating the Global Financial Crisis. News of this event at the time was a surprise, but, fortunately perhaps, its consequences were not apparent to this fledgling Aussie venture. However, having survived the GFC and built a successful

business over ten years, this was not a milestone that Managing Director, Terry Newman, and his wife and CFO, Sonoe Mishima, were go to let pass without a major celebration. The celebrations were held on 20 September and the company also used the occasion to open its new 1200 square metre show room and offices. About 15 clients flew in from Australia and Japan, the Australian Deputy Consul General, Michael Clifton, who also serves as the head of Austrade in Greater China attended, as did the CEO of the Shanghai Chamber of Commerce, Jack Brady, and a number of local dignitaries.

Armstrong Flooring Celebrates 50 Years October 2018 marks 50 years since the founding of Armstrong Flooring as a local flooring manufacturer. As Armstrong celebrates its 50th anniversary, it’s worth remembering the origins of their Australian business that has grown to become a leader in the Australian and International flooring markets and a significant Australian manufacturer and exporter of flooring and walling products. On 2nd October 1968, a joint venture agreement to manufacture flooring in Australia was signedby representatives from Armstrong Cork Co. and the Australian industrial giant Nylex Corporation, and so Armstrong-Nylex Pty Ltd was born. When ArmstrongNylex commenced operations in 1968, 32 people were employed to manage the Australian business and oversee the building and commissioning of the factory at Mills Road, Braeside Victoria. In November of 1969, Armstrong-Nylex produced its first Australian Made Tessera Corlon Vinyl Flooring. From the very beginning, the joint venture proved to be a resounding success, seeing Armstrong-Nylex manufacture many and varied products at numerous sites around Melbourne and in particular at our Braeside factory, where we have produced everything from inlaid Corlon sheet (Tessera, Solarian, Classic Corlon), Carpet Tile (First Edition), Daytile (Atrium & Taj Marble, Picasso), Calendar sheet (Armalon, Wallflex), Extrusions (Skirting & trims) and Homogeneous sheet (Accolade Plus, Accolade Safe) Through the years Armstrong-Nylex grew steadily and in the late 1960’s purchased the Dunlop Flooring Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) plant at Reservoir
6 | Flooring Oct/Nov 2018
Victoria This plant was replaced in 1983 by the purchase from CSR of their VCT plant which was moved on 150 semi-trailers from Concord NSW to Thomastown Victoria. Armstrong also purchased an ACI plant and began making Homogeneous Vinyl Sheet Flooring in the early 70s at Bay Road Cheltenham and the extrusions line from Nylex Mentone in the early 1980s, which are still produced onsite in Braeside Victoria today. To cope with the growing demands of the business, additions to our plant and administrative offices in Braeside were completed in the early 1980s, with a $1.5M homogeneous sheet line being moved from Cheltenham and commissioned here in 1987. In 1993, Armstrong-Nylex began manufacturing Accolade Homogeneous vinyl sheet, which 25 years later we are still proud to be manufacturing onsite and exporting around the globe. A change of focus the late 1990s, saw Armstrong World Industries buy out Nylex and Armstrong-Nylex became Armstrong World Industries (Australia) Pty Ltd. In 2008, the company began to further leverage its local production capabilities and launched Infinity an exclusive bespoke flooring design tool, which offers users the ability to customise the look of their Homogeneous Vinyl sheet flooring. Their bespoke flooring has been since featured in many iconic Australian Hospitals including the Perth Children’s, Lady Cilento Children’s Brisbane and The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne to name a few. On 4th April, 2016 Armstrong Flooring Inc separated form Armstrong World Industries and listed on the New York
Stock exchange as a stand-alone global flooring manufacturer. This was also the day that Armstrong Flooring Australia Pty Ltd was born and it adopted its current branding. Since then they have successfully celebrated the export of our first container of Australian manufactured flooring to the USA and Canada (which are two of over 20 countries that they export their Braeside manufactured product to, including China). As they celebrate their 50th Anniversary they look back at their successes and offer our thanks to you, their loyal customers and employees for your decades of support and assure you that we will continue to evolve, innovate and grow to support this industry long into the future.

FAV Awards Night The 3rd annual FAV awards was another great success. It is a night that contractors and suppliers get together and celebrate their industry as one. It was also a fitting event for the industry to acknowledge the sad passing of an industry stall wort, Cam Hammond. The event was hosted by comedian Michael Pope at the Plaza Ballroom under the magnificent Regent Theatre in the center of Melbourne. Flooring Xtra Celebrates 10 Years Flooring Xtra’s Annual Conference had a little more anticipation and excitement around it this year. Held at the Cordis Hotel, Auckland the group celebrated its 10th birthday. Over 160 members and suppliers came together to toast the occasion. Launched in 2008, the brand was first set up in New Zealand when changes in the market opened the gap for a well run group operating under co-operative principles, could emerge. In less than 10 weeks the founders had worked through the brand identity and licensing. It was an immediate success when it was launched on 1st July and had over 50 stores by Christmas 2008. The distinctive Flooring Xtra logo maintains its contemporary look even today. Since that time over 60 stores have been established in New Zealand, making Flooring Xtra NZ’s largest flooring retailer. In reflecting on this, Flooring Xtra Chairman Jamie Lumber commented:
“Flooring Xtra has not only become a recognised brand, but it is underpinned with a genuine family feel with a great set of values and culture. We have a really solid platform to build on as we look to our next ten years.” Henry Van Dyk, who was instrumental in setting up the group and has been a Director since start up took the guests back in time to the groups’ origins. “In 2008 the flooring retail and supply landscape in New Zealand was under a bit of pressure with how business between suppliers and retailers should be run. A number of us felt strongly that business should be run differently, where supplier relationships shouldn’t be dictated by a Head Office, but built collaboratively together with both the local owner operator, Support Office and our supply partners. But we also knew we didn’t want to be just another buying group so developing a sharp brand was also important.
“As well when we set up it wasn’t about being the biggest, it was always about being the best; and looking back it was unbelievable that we reached 50 stores so quickly, our focus was, and still is about being the best” The gala dinner not only celebrated ten years but also the annual member and supplier awards. In commenting on this Don Barry CEO. “Sure, this years’ event was a special and there was a bit of extra emotion throughout, particularly for those who received awards. We not only reflected on the journey we have been on and all the people who are now part of our business family. But the best measure of every member’s success being part of Flooring Xtra is whether the business and the member personally is in a better space after ten years than if they hadn’t put a green tree on their shop.”

DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR Expands to 15 Exhibition Halls in 2019 The 21st edition of DOMOTEX asia/ CHINAFLOOR, taking place on March 26-28, 2019 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center, is expanding this year to 175,000 sqm in 15 halls. Five of them are dedicated to carpets and rugs, four to wood, bamboo and other hard floors, 1.5 to FLOORTECH asia and 4.5 halls are dedicated to resilient floorings for sport, commercial, industrial and residential purposes. The show's clusters display categories in an optimal way so attendees can quickly find everything of interest to them. Getting down to specifics, this year wood flooring will occupy E1-E4 halls, which means that the exhibitors will have bigger spaces to display their products. E1 will exhibit only international brands, such as Labeco, Boen, Arte Mundi, Swiss Krono, Classen and Faus. E2 will house domestic companies, including Starforest, Tubao, TECLIC, Artree, Jinqiao and Dalian Wood Flooring Pavilion. The largest part of E3

will be for floor heating and E4 – for bamboo flooring and Changzhou laminate flooring pavilion. This way it will be a lot easier for visitors to survey the market and connect with the exhibitors and trends that matter to them. FLOORTECH asia will be displayed in E5, bringing ever new technologies and wood flooring printing machines to the show for the first time; while a part of E6 will house wood flooring supplies like cleaning and maintenance equipment, and applications and installation technology. According to Sara Babinski, design manager at Armstrong Flooring, 3D printing will play an important role in the flooring industry. To take that into account, DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR 2019 will present companies such as Hope Ceramics Machinery Equipment and ELECTRONICS FOR IMAGING. As for mechanical equipment for wood flooring, the world’s leading brands like Homag, Hawk, Suzhou Hotjin Precision Machinery,
AZUMI Mechanical Equipment and Wintersteiger AG have already secured their space. This year E6 will be a gateway to outdoor decking flooring and E7 will house sports flooring, as the industry grew extensively from last year. A big part of N3 and N5 will be occupied by the major international brands, such as KDF, Tarkett, Wineo, JaeYoung, US Floor, NOX, Adopen, GoaKe. The resilient flooring section is expanding dramatically, that is why it will be spread out to halls E6, E7 and N3-N5, taking up 4.5 halls for the first time. DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR also confirmed that W5 will once again be the host hall for the Luxury Brands Carpet Show. Moreover, U-living, Hongjia, Babylon and some other premium household carpet companies will join the hall in 2019, making W5 a high-level design hall. Three country pavilions (Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan) have also confirmed their return to W5 for the 21st edition of the show with large stands.
www.flooringmagazine.com.au
Since the establishment of the show in 1999, DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR has been regarded as a place to be for floor covering professionals from around the globe and a unique opportunity for manufacturers to position themselves as trendsetters of the flooring industry. DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR 2018 gathered 1,418 exhibitors from 35 countries and attracted 60,029 trade visitors, of which 14,238 international, coming from 104 nations. The 2019 edition will continue its successful route, attracting even more professionals and offering the flooring world a unique platform to access and do business in Asia – Pacific, the biggest flooring market in the world. laminate (DPL) BerryAlloc range to bring realistic and exclusive new styles to the market. There has been a positive reception from customers following the initial launch at Domotex 2018, and more of the products will be phased in over the course of this year. James is also excited by the opportunities that digital printing presents for the division’s different solid flooring product lines. Two years ago, Beaulieu Flooring Solutions invested in digital printing capabilities, forming partnerships with leading players in the field. These digitally printed products are invaluable in enabling efficient testing of product concepts and market interest, providing customers with endless design possibilities that cannot be achieved with traditional techniques. While the technology is currently too slow for broad commercial use, James sees Beaulieu Flooring Solutions as well-placed to respond quickly as technologies advance. Recent investments in its soft flooring capabilities emphasise on-going new developments for these segments too. These include new technology for Carus
XL contract carpet, state-of-the-art technology/machinery for needle felt carpet, and full extrusion lines for the artificial grass business. The division is also currently looking at investments in the newly-acquired Beaulieu Australia and Beaulieu Canada plants. Beaulieu Flooring Solutions is committed to supporting the trend towards greater sustainability across the industry. It is already acting upon opportunities to increase recyclability of flooring, focusing for example on single material products and helping customers to recycle their products. James concludes: “This is an inspiring time for Beaulieu Flooring Solutions and our customers. People buy flooring for a room, not a house. And we see it as our goal to refresh product trends and styles to help consumers pursue their individual tastes. Our customers rely on us to have the right products that are focused on trends. I look forward to sharing news of future investments and acquisitions to enhance what we are already achieving.”

MMFA: Innovations are Driving Product Standards Ongoing innovations in multilayer flooring are spurring on the market and changing perspectives. And new solutions to familiar market requirements are making it necessary to revise standards. This is why, immediately after the summer break, the Executive Board of the MMFA (Multilayer Modular Flooring Association) led by Chairman Matthias Windmöller held a meeting with an ad hoc technical group made up of specialists from various member companies. The location of the meeting was quite relevant to the programme, as it started out with a visit to the AgPR in Troisdorf, a recycling plant for PVC flooring, where Managing Director Dr Jochen Zimmermann gave an introduction to the objectives and background of the facility. This was followed by a number of lively discussions internally concerning the continued development of standards, test 28 | Flooring Oct/Nov 2018

criteria and measurement procedures for the various categories of multilayer flooring. These must keep up with the fast pace of innovation whilst at the same time leaving sufficient freedom for future developments. The validity of
the results will now be tested by means of interlaboratory comparisons between member companies. A further meeting will be held later this year which will aim to draw conclusions about the best way to proceed.

What equipment do you require for floor preparation? The common question is “What type of equipment should be used in the Floor Covering Industry?” But first: What is floor preparation? Why do I need to prepare the substrate? Every floor covering will perform best if the substrate is prepared correctly.
covering is going to perform best if the top laitance layer is removed, and the surface is ground back to ‘virgin’ concrete with no contaminants. Interestingly floor coverings such as sheet vinyl or tiles laid on a beautifully flat concrete without any screed looks better and often lasts longer. Prepared concrete is the perfect substrate to lay onto directly.
The good thing about this is that with the right equipment it is faster, cleaner and costs less to do it right.
If a screed is needed, which can happen especially if there are dips in the floor, then the adhesion of the primer and the screed is going to be excellent if prepared correctly.
No matter what you are going to be doing to a floor, every adhesive, every floor
As we often say: “No preparation, is preparing a floor to fail”.

The Best Methods of Preparation • Diamond Grinders are the most frequently used machine in the Floor Coverings field. From fully shrouded, dust-free hand grinders, to large walk-behind machines these are usually the best type of machine to prepare floors, get glue off, or to make floors flat. Note that there are two essential factors that determine how productive a grinder is. Diamond speed measured in metres/ minute (Not revs per minute) and weight per disc on the floor. A good 240v machine will be at least 30kg per disc and will achieve 550m/min. 34

• Shotblasters can be a very useful tool for some applications. They produce the best adhesion, but they may not always provide the right finish for a floorcovering. Usually they perform best for preparation for cementitious screeds in the Floor Coverings Industry • Scarifiers (sometimes called Planers) are great if you need to remove high spots where the floor needs to be planed down or can be used to give a good bond for floor screeds. • Floor Scrapers are part of preparation and an effective machine when used with the optimum blade. A floor scraper used with a narrower blade should be able to remove adhesives with the floor covering. If you do this, the time taken to grind the floor can be dramatically reduced so a better job gets done in much less time.
The Importance of the Dust Extractor Of all the equipment that is used in the Concrete Floor Preparation Industry, the dust extractor is the one thing everyone needs, and so often people end up with a unit that doesn’t perform! All too often what a contractor is sold is an “Industrial Vacuum Cleaner”. These will come “cheap”, but a Dust Extractor has two key attributes that make them especially suited to working with a lot of concrete dust. There are very few true dust extractors on the market! • A true dust extractor cleans its own filter cartridge. DustMaster Extractors do this continuously, even while operating! Some of these clean the filters by using a rotatory arm that flicks each pleat releasing dust. A Continuous Compressed Air Reverse Pulse system works very effectively, and it is common to hear that owners don’t touch their filters for many months or even years when used properly. • Hopefully these will have a high quality 5micron polyester H13 filter cartridge that can handle immense volumes of troublesome dust; yet allows the dust to be flicked off and fall into a dust bin. • NOTE: All machines used when using a Dust extractor should have an effective shroud system to control dust at the Grinder, Scarifier, etc.
34 | Flooring Oct/Nov 2018
www.flooringmagazine.com.au
The floating shroud is the best as it is always on the floor and provides the best possible dust control. Floorex DustMaster (DM) Series with its effective filter cleaning system includes DM-1360 single motor vac. This performs beautifully with Meteor 250 single disc grinders, Satellite 400 small triple disc grinders and hand grinders. Then the DM-2660 which is a twin motor vac with a 50litre bin, or the twin motor DM-2680 can be used either with LONGOPAC bag system, or single plastic bag system. These Extractors are ideal with Satellite 480, Mastiff scarifiers, and does cope quite well with Satellite 650 grinder/ polishers. The largest Dustmaster 240 volt extractor triple motor DM-2780 is also used with LONGOPAC or single plastic bags and will does an excellent job with Satellite 650, Satellite 766 Dual Head, and large scarifying machines.
Why is Dust Extraction so Important? Silica dust is recognised as a carcinogenic substance, as well as the likes of asbestos. New rules that have come into force make it mandatory to have exceptionally highquality extractors which means that: • The filter element needs to be able to filter 99.99% dust out down to 3micron size. • The filter element is not the only piece in the puzzle to make the dust extractor meet requirements; just putting a HEPA filter into a vac does not make it a HEPA vacuum! • If you have a grinder with a poor shroud system, even the best vacuum is compromised. • The vacuum hose if it is too small diameter and/or too long, may not allow the full flow of air because of friction. You need VOLUME of air, not exactly vacuum to control dust. • A Supa Separator is a perfect way to make any vacuum perform better.
The good thing is that these can be used with plastic bags to collect dust. • It is a distinct advantage if your vacuum has the option of running each motor individually. When you need to back off airflow to keep the diamonds open you realise how beneficial this is.
What does a typical floor prep set-up look like? Most contractors will find that a Satellite 480 heavyweight 240volt grinder imperative (or 3 phase Satellite 650). Meteor 250 single disc 240v Edger grinder or a 180mm Shrouded hand grinder. A DustMaster DM-2660 (or DM-2680) vacuum is an important tool. A Beaver 300 Self-Propelled floor scraper (or Beaver 240 push-type) is usually the norm. PortaMix Hippo 5 bag screed mixing station makes jobs from 5-500 bags easy.

How ROBERTS Revolutionised Flooring with the Invention of Smoothedge Eighty years ago, a carpet layer, carpet salesman and shop owner known as Roy Roberts revolutionised the carpet industry with the invention of carpet gripper and the industry leading brand ROBERTS. “Haunted” by the imperfections of the oldfashioned method of installing carpet, Roberts founded the brand in his family garage in the American State of Georgia. “Why couldn’t someone devise a method which would eliminate tack marks and their ugly indentations and scallops?” Roberts lamented in his booklet celebrating the brand’s 22nd anniversary. “Why wasn’t there a means that would anchor carpet securely, yet provide a smoother, more level finish? “A finish that would enhance rather than deface the installed carpet edge?” After conducting numerous experiments over the course of months, Roberts devised the gripper strips which took on almost the exact shape of the present day Smoothedge. “At last, after years of laying carpet, I was able to lay a truly beautiful job,” Roberts wrote. “The enthusiastic reaction of this first customer convinced us. This was the installation she had always desired. “An improved tackless carpet installation!” Over the coming months and years, as the industry perfected installing carpet with the “Smoothedge tackles finish”, ROBERTS developed new tools to help carpet installers save time. One of these inventions included Hot Melt Carpet Seaming Tape, developed and manufactured by ROBERTS it became another innovative ROBERTS product to be marketed worldwide. From its humble garage-based origins in 1938, ROBERTS has grown to become synonymous with quality and reliability. Now known as a premier brand of flooring tools and adhesives, generations of installers have grown up with ROBERTS with the products now sold in more than 100 countries worldwide. 38

Les Boothey, well known to the flooring industry, served as Interior Textiles Manager at the Australian Wool Corporation until his retirement in 1991. He was responsible for bringing us into the ‘golden age’ when it came to carpets in this country and showcasing one hundred percent pure wool carpeting, and more. Les talks about his work life and we take a nostalgic look back at the industry, the Australian Wool Corporation and shine a light on a remarkable man…..

Looking back on my career highlights is very much like reliving my life in the Textile Industry. Having studied Textiles in the early 1950s, I became involved in the manufacturing of woven fabrics from purchasing the raw wool through to blending, scouring, carding, spinning, weaving and finally to finishing. After achieving such positions as Weaving, Production and Factory Manager with leading Australian Companies, in November 1966 I was invited to join the Australian Wool Board which later became the Australian Wool Corporation. It was here that I achieved my career highlights.
always being interested in wool carpet, in the late 1960s early 1970s I became very involved in the Carpet Industry until retiring in November 1991. That’s 25 years ago!
What’s the history of the Australian Wool Corporation? It is well-known that the Australian Wool Industry has a long history dating back several hundred years. The Australian Wool Board (AWB) was formed in 1936, then the International Wool Secretariat was formed in 1937. The IWS was funded by the major wool growing countries. Being the largest wool growing country, Australia had the major involvement.

with these resources continuing to be available at our Technical Centre in Ilkley U.K. by the IWS, I was very fortunate to be able to feed these new developments immediately into the Australian Industry. A) A most interesting development for the ‘Wool Fibre’ was the Felted Wool Yarn . The Yarn, coloured or natural is felted in various counts, fine or coarse in texture before being used to manufacture rugs and carpets. Both carpet manufacturers who spun their own yarn and yarn spinners took up the concept with enthusiasm. B) In my opinion the biggest event to occur for wool in the Carpet Industry was the natural appeal of “Berber”. This took the World and the Australian Industry by storm and whilst over four decades have now passed, it still has a commanding influence on the flooring industry today. Originally the Berber concept was taken up from the Nomad Berber Tribes of North Africa who used the fleeces straight from their sheep, naturally coloured or white, blended it together then spun it into a yarn for their clothing and rugs.
What were some of your lasting memories and greatest achievements at the Corporation? A memorable highlight is that I very much enjoyed my relationship with the Industry Leaders and respected their continuing input into our numerous joint promotional activities over many years. Together we made an indelible impact for wool consumption in both the Domestic and the Contract market where our “Wool in Architecture” information was also very successful. On my departure from the AWC in November 1991 I was pleased that Wool consumption in carpets was approaching 50% of total fibre usage, its highest level ever.
After retirement, is there anything you particularly miss? On my departure from the AWC I really missed the companionship of my staff and technical colleagues who played a substantial role in my achievements. However, after 27 years we still contact each other and have a lunch get-together 3-4 times a year to enjoy each other’s company.
Talk about your family life. Was flooring in your blood?
44 | Flooring Oct/Nov 2018
When I commenced with the AWC in 1966 I met my future Wife and we married several years later. As life moves on Joan and I have down-sized from a large family home as most of the children have married and moved on. Joan has always played a supporting and substantial role in my career. She was also Personal Assistant to the AWC Technical Manager when we met so always shared in my activities and progress through the years. Wool is still in our blood and having experienced the overall superior performance of wool carpet in two large family homes – the first for 22 years and the second for the same period, we were very happy to choose our second Berber for our current home.
Any industry lowlights you care to mention? Highlights too? The only lowlight in my long career was leaving the AWC for the last time in 1991. However, the over-riding highlight has to be the Industry Farewell given to me on my departure. This Farewell was graciously hosted at The Victoria Carpet Co. by Michael Oakley, the Directors and Staff. Forever grateful!

Water Wars.
The battle for the high ground in the war over waterproof flooring. The flooring industry, like most industries, is in a constant state of change. Kendall Waller, the Australasian Product Manager for Quick-Step® Flooring, talks about the battle for bragging rights in waterproof flooring. When did you first see the push for waterproof flooring and how important is it in the current flooring market? Of course, we have had waterproof flooring on the market for decades, with sheet vinyl and the like, but the real push for a waterproof status started building a few years back with the start of ‘loose lay’, and more recently with the boom in ‘hybrid’ and ‘rigid’ vinyl flooring.
The truth is that today, with many consumers, waterproof credentials are almost a pre-requisite for a purchase decision. For many consumers in the buying cycle, it has become a primary condition, after which all other decisions will be made.
I sometimes wonder how any of us survived our childhood without a waterproof floor.
TRADITIONAL LAMINATE FLOORING
It is phenomenal the influence it has had on the market. I sometimes wonder how any of us survived our childhood without a waterproof floor, while it evokes a vision of constant flooding of kitchens and living rooms, with the kids doing back-stroke! How is it possible to claim real waterproof performance with laminate flooring? A waterproof claim for a wood-based floorcovering can seem counter intuitive, especially given that the current waterproof flooring trend is often a response to the poor moisture resistance of some low quality laminate offerings in the market.
QUICK-STEP ® MAJESTIC VALLEY OAK LIGHT BROWN (MJ3555)
This is why we always include the word ‘surface’ when making our claim. The waterproof surface Laminate collections from Quick-Step feature a unique joint technology and water-repellent coating. This prevents water from entering the joints, thus making the installed floor waterproof.
QUICK•STEP ®
In fact in our labs in Europe, we flood the flooring joints with water for up to 4 days with no uptake of water. Therefore we are comfortable with the tag ’waterproof surface’. This technology is closely linked to our heritage as the inventors of integrated glueless joining systems, and of unique and patented bevel pressing technologies.
And how do you see the comparison with the vinyl offerings in the market? The above is very different to the flexible and rigid vinyl products, where there is the promise of a ‘100% waterproof product’, yet not of ‘a waterproof floorcovering’. Vinyl samples can be dropped in a fish tank without damage, but the story is about the product itself being waterproof, not the installed flooring surface. It is clear that water can penetrate the joints of most rigid and flexible vinyl floors, leading to damage that is not covered by the warranty. Where with Quick-Step we offer a straightforward ‘Wet Area Warranty’: If a Quick-Step Impressive (Ultra) or Majestic Laminate floor is properly installed but water damaged within 10 years of installation (excl. appliance failures or floods), we fix it, simple as that! It’s the difference between a waterproof surface, and a waterproof product. You refer to ‘hybrid’ flooring as ‘rigid’ vinyl, why is that, and where do you see its place in the market? In our view, ‘rigid (vinyl)’ is a preferred description of this category, that uses rigid, rather than flexible plastic for its core material. It’s this rigidity that defines its performance, and permits an installation over more uneven sub-floors. Also the rigid core allows for the integration of a glueless joining system. The term ‘Hybrid’ refers more to the hybridity of ingredients in the product and is often used to avoid the use of the term ‘vinyl’. However this is more of a marketing term for the category. Quick-Step do not sell any rigid vinyl floors today, why is that? At Quick-Step we are big believers in beautiful, rigid and durable click flooring. After all, it’s in our DNA, as we have been offering rigid click panels,
with all their advantages since the start! That’s also why we see such a strong future for rigid vinyl. It solves many of the issues associated with flexible vinyl, by providing a product that’s quickly and easily installed, over numerous subfloors, with low preparation, and good reliability.
Quick-Step® will launch it’s own rigid flooring collection in 2019. We have taken a long term view and did a profound study of the entire category and its variations made in Asia as well as Europe. Although this has taken time, we now have a complete understanding of the category in terms of product make-up, thermal stability, joint strength, and optimised in-house manufacturing methods. We will launch a multi-layer, fibreglass reenforced rigid product in 2019, offering all the normal Quick-Step design elements with best in class performance and latest technologies. This will be one of the first rigid products fully produced in Europe.
NEW QUICK-STEP RIGID WILL BE LAUNCHED IN 2019
Where to from here for waterproof flooring? With the avalanche of Asian-made rigids coming into the market, I think it will be an interesting couple of years. In Australia, there is a big variance in the quality and types becoming available, with big claims regarding installation practice. For instance, I can see a re-think on installation practice, much in the same way we have seen a move away from PS adhesives with ‘loose lay”. These rigid plastics are still quite re-active to temperature change, so those areas subject to big temperature changes could be vulnerable, with typical thermal stability in the 40-50um/LM per degree Celsius. But seeing that these products solve the inherent issues with flexible vinyl plank installation, I do see a bright future for them.

A Family Affair Carpets Galore Floorworld, Thomastown Victoria Philip Ashley reports
T
here are many family businesses in the flooring industry but arguably, none quite as significant as the one started by Bill Tsapatsaris and his sister Angela. Located in the Melbourne suburb of Thomastown, Carpets Galore Floorworld is part of the history of the Floorworld Group and is a second generation family business, now owned by Angela’s daughter Helen and her cousin Chris; who is Bill’s son. Theirs is a business built on the little things that matter to their customers; a business built on saying ‘yes’ when others say no. It’s a business built on family, loyalty, skills and a respect for Bill’s enduring legacy of perfection and customer service. Helen Lazenkas started out in 1995 when Angela and Bill started a second store in Campbellfield. Helen
and her husband Con managed the store and eventually bought the business from Angela and Bill. Selling that business, Con returned to the Thomastown store and Helen took some time off to start a family and later, taking on the role of managing 250 carpenters constructing high-rise developments around Melbourne. Helen returned to the Thomastown store in 2014 before Bill passed away from pancreatic cancer and Angela semi-retired. Helen says “It was a very difficult time for everyone and we work very hard to always honour his legacy.” Bill was an industry personality of some note and Helen says “There’s no one in the industry that didn’t know Uncle Bill.” One of the original six friends who started Floorworld back in the 1980’s, Bill was much loved as an inspiring individual who would often be seen around the Lower Plenty Football Club in his ‘superbly ironed’ Pelaco shirt; a man who epitomised what a family man truly is; a man who’s contribution to the flooring industry in Australia was second to none. Today, Angela is still a Director of Floorworld, the first woman to perform this role and Helen sits on the Floorworld executive board. Floorworld now has approximately 37 stores with the latest opening in Tweed Heads South. Now in charge of one of the largest Floorworld stores in the country, Helen and Con ran the Thomastown store for three years. Bill’s son Chris had been working in flooring installation for over ten years and in 2017 acquired his father’s shares and became co-owner with his cousin Helen. Chris says “This was the way it was always meant to be. From brother and sister, it’s now cousins.” Despite the change in ownership, it’s the family that matters with Con in sales and estimation; Helen in admin and the showroom; Chris in sales and project management; Angela still involved and even Helen’s daughter Olivia helping out on Saturdays. Rounding out the team is Steve on stores and sales

with thirty five years in the industry. While everyone has their own strengths they bring to the business, it’s the ‘family’s’ ability to work as a team that helps them get every job done properly. And it’s the jobs where they stand out. From the Victorian high country to the Mornington Peninsula to the ritzy homes of Balwyn and Kew, Floorworld Thomastown is known for their ability to always get the job done right. Helen says “We’re not scared to have a go, our combined skill sets always make it work.” Chris adds “We’ll always find a positive outcome a solution to anything that comes up. We don’t have problems; we see obstacles that we find solutions for. Helen recalls the day that a guy with an American accent called the store late in the afternoon with a strange request. An ESPN producer from New York was in town for the 2014 Australian Open Tennis and needed a temporary floor laid the next morning. Helen thought it might be a ‘gotcha’ call but invited him out to the store. Thirty minutes later a taxi showed up with a group of ESPN executives and they had drinks and pizza while they worked out what they wanted. It was a temporary floor for a photoshoot that had to be laid the next morning in the ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Melbourne. Helen and
Chris got the job done; getting tickets to the open where Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams took out the titles. Helen says “We always say yes” and saying yes, they won a contract with Rolex. Saying yes also resulted in work for the National Gallery of Victoria and Federation Square. Helen says “In business, looks aren’t always everything so we treat everyone the same way.” It’s this commitment that has seen Floorworld Thomastown win numerous awards, and the gratitude of customers for over twenty five years. This passion for people also extends to Helen’s work for Pancare. Established in 2011 by cancer surgeon Dr. Mehrdad Nikfarjam; Pancare aims to raise six million dollars over the next three years to fight pancreatic cancer. Helen also works personally as one of ‘4women4pancare’ with friends Kerri, Patsy and Janet where they only recently raised $61,000 for the cause. Chris and Helen are also major sponsors of ‘Stan the Man’ Longinidis, the 8-time World Kickboxing Champion’s children’s academy that assists with programs that help to create ‘champion people’ through initiatives that include anti-bullying programs. Helen and Chris are Floorworld Thomastown but much more than that; they are a part of the wider community where caring for others is as important to them as anything else.

Diagnose Your Business If you are familiar with the TV show House, you will know House was a diagnostician, specialising in illnesses confounding other doctors. With his team of doctors, he would investigate all the possible causes of the symptoms the patient was presenting, trying various solutions and addressing symptoms so that by the end of the 45-minute show, he would have identified the problem, and cured the patient (mostly). If we own or manage a flooring business, we know how House feels. Every day we are presented with symptoms indicating the health of our business; ideally, we fix the problem at the root cause, but if not we treat the symptoms. In an ideal world, we would have a healthy business; satisfied customers, happy staff, consistent cash flow, good profit, and minimal daily problems. Unfortunately, very few flooring businesses can check all these boxes.
…our days are spent addressing symptoms; we are so busy putting out fires we don’t have time to identify and fix the underlying causes.
fundamental disconnections between key elements of the business. A big part of the solution is a fully integrated business management solution designed specifically for the flooring industry. RFMS is the market leader. I say “a big part of the solution” because RFMS is not a magic bullet. There are lots of moving parts in a retail flooring business, and there is no software solution on the market that will address unreasonable customers, uncooperative installers, out of stock suppliers, or staff that don’t do as we expect. What RFMS will do for you, however, is create a platform from which you can streamline processes, eliminate double handling, and minimise errors and omissions. RFMS will arm you with the information you need to diagnose your business by providing reporting on all your key indicators. RFMS will remove the silos and blind alleys where your information goes to hide from you. You will still have daily dramas, but you will have less of them, and, in most cases, they will be more easily resolved because you will have the information at your fingertips to make good decisions quickly.
We see other, less appealing symptoms; dissatisfied customers, frustrated staff, lumpy cash flow, low profitability, and repeating day to day issues robbing us of the enjoyment of being in our business. Chris Ogden is a consultant and Director of RFMS Australasia a supplier of IT solutions specific to the flooring industry. Chris has an extensive background in all aspects of the flooring industry, and he can be contacted at cogden@rfms.com.
Drawing on my own experience as a retailer, and on my observations in the industry, we spend too much of our day addressing symptoms; we are so busy putting out fires we don’t have time to identify and fix the underlying causes. Instead we might add another step to our existing processes and we end up with a business made up of a bunch of systems and processes some of which were developed years ago; maybe decades ago. So, we modify the process but the problems persist. Instead of indicators of a healthy business we see other, less appealing indicators; dissatisfied customers, frustrated staff, lumpy cash flow, low profitability, and repeating issues robbing us of the enjoyment of being in business. A significant contributor is often lack of systems, or poor systems, along with 64 | Flooring Oct/Nov 2018

Take Unnecessary Steps Out of Your Sales Process If you haven’t heard of the phrase “Heath Robinson solution” you will almost certainly have seen an example. In the US they are known as “Rube Goldberg machines”; machines or systems intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overcomplicated fashion. The image is of a Rube Goldberg machine designed to automate a napkin. Of course, it would be an overstatement to say that the systems and processes we use in running our businesses are Heath Robinson in nature, but as technology advances, our existing processes can be made to look almost comically inefficient; as an example, we can think about the cost and inefficiency of traditional mail compared to email. In the flooring business, an example might be our measuring and quoting process. The goal of completing a
measure is to provide our customer with a price. We might be with the customer in their home at the point where they are keen to make a purchasing decision. Instead, having drawn our mud map, we have to go back to the office to find the time to scale the plan, calculate the quantities, prepare the quote, and only then can we send that quote to the customer. Right now, you will likely have competitors who have removed those intermediate steps and will be leaving the customers home having given them the quote. They have done so because they are making use of electronic quantifying tools. I spoke to a new client this week; still trialling Measure Mobile, he measured, quantified, and quoted the job in the home, and he closed the sale. This sale
is a significant event in the history of how he will be doing business in the future. If you would like to see Measure and Measure Mobile in action, contact me at cogden@rfms.com, and I will arrange a demo. Safety
Safety at Schools: Building a Safe Yet Conducive Learning Environment
Schools and Colleges are establishments that play a critical role in moulding our future generations. A good building design plays an essential role in enabling effective and high-quality education environments for every student. Australian state governments encourage architects and designers to create designs that also provide opportunities for interaction among students of all abilities. Administrators of the educational infrastructure across Australia mostly support the concept of universal design and its application throughout the government schools. Universal design recognises that there is a wide spectrum of human abilities, including physical, perceptual and cognitive abilities. Universal designs must create environments that ensure access and participation by all. All architects, designers and project consultants, must have regard to the seven universal design principles: • Equitable use - The design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities • Flexibility in use - The design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities • Simple and intuitive use - Use of the design is easy to understand, regardless of the user’s experience, knowledge, language skills, or current concentration level 66 | Flooring Oct/Nov 2018
• Perceptible information - The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or the user’s sensory abilities • Tolerance for error - The design minimises hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions • Low physical effort - The design can be used efficiently, comfortably and with minimum fatigue. • Size and spaces for approach and use - Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation and use, regardless of a user’s body size, posture or mobility. Some of these principles directly address the need for safety products such as Tactile ground surface indicators who may use a cane and Stair nosing consistent with AS 1428.1 to promote luminance contrast at the leading edge of step treads.
Urban Design Charter
State governments also set up an Urban Design Charter - commitment to making cities and towns in Victoria more liveable through good urban design. For educational infrastructure, this charter lists a set of guidelines for architects and designers to follow. Three core elements of this charter are:
Accessibility - Provide ease, safety and choice of access for all people Safety - Design spaces that minimise risks of personal harm and support safe behaviour Sensory Pleasure - Create spaces that engage the senses and delight the mind
Engaging the Senses
Colours play a significant role in our lives, and research has shown that colour can significantly impact both mood and cognitive function. As we commemorated International #YouthDay in August, we were working on multiple projects involving safety installations at schools with designs and decors in vibrant colours. The use of vibrant colours within educational infrastructure has become increasingly popular over the last few years, and this has had a remarkably positive effect on students and their learning. Creating a stimulating, safe and creative environment is the main goal of any architect or education sector decision maker.
Need of the Hour – Fostering Learning with Colour
Whether for a kindergarten, school or tertiary institution – it is important to pay attention to colour schemes. Appropriate use of colour can stimulate creativity amongst students and contribute towards

can improve mood. Use sparingly, as too much can cause anxiety and fear. In short, a well thought out combination of various tones of blue, red, green and yellow could be used to create a calm environment that nurtures creativity and enhances attention to detail. A study by the University of British Columbia found that red can improve memory retrieval and proofreading performance by as much as 31%, whilst blue caused participants to feel safe to explore new ideas. According to the International Association of Color Consultants – North America, “A school’s physical environment has a powerful psychophysiological impact on its students. Appropriate color design is important in protecting eyesight, in creating surroundings that are conducive to studying, and in promoting physical and mental health”. Simply put, if we want students to excel academically we need to make the environment a positive and safe one.
‘Bright’ – Safety in Colour
a positive learning environment. Different colours have different effects on the human brain, so they need to be chosen carefully with consideration towards the demographics of the community. Heavy use of bright and vibrant colours may not be appropriate for students who are prone to overstimulation, however preschoolers and active children would thrive in this environment. According to experts, students between 5-8 years old must feel a sense of security and positivity within the school environment. The most appropriate colours for students at this age include red, warm yellow, salmon, coral, violet and peach/orange. From the age of 9+, it is a good idea to start incorporating more blue and green. At the final stages of the education journey, you can transition away from warmer tones and instead explore cooler ones,
www.flooringmagazine.com.au
with green remaining one of the most popular.
The Benefits of Various Colours
Blue – Strongly associated with vast open spaces such as the sky and ocean, blue significantly enhances creativity and productivity and promotes feelings of calmness. Red – An attention-grabbing colour which enhances attention to detail and stimulates brain activity. Recommendation: balance with a complementary green to avoid overstimulation. Green – Strongly associated with the natural environment, green will help to achieve balance, focus and clarity of thought within the classroom. Yellow – Strongly associated with emotion, confidence, optimism and selfesteem. A bright and fun colour which
Whilst colour is a great way to enhance learning, safety remains a critical element for educational infrastructure. Products such as stair nosings are designed to keep everyone safe as they move about their environment, but they have traditionally only been offered in drab, boring tones which can conflict with the vibrant colours seen in the learning environments of today. We at Classic recognised this issue at an early stage, and we set about to resolve it once and for all. We introduced a new ‘Bright’ range of stair nosings - an exciting innovation in safety products that has been designed in close collaboration with architects and educators.
Flooring Oct/Nov 2018 | 67
We’ve listened to feedback and undertaken extensive trend analysis, culminating in the release of six exciting new profiles — Teal, Lime Green, Raspberry, Coral, Tangerine and Ultra Violet (Pantone Colour of the Year 2018). Each profile is highly visible and conforms with the requirements of the Australian Standards for luminance contrast, so they can be used to further enhance the vibrancy and safety of any building and will help to stimulate the minds of students as they move about the campus.
The future really is Bright…
The trend towards the inclusion of vibrant colour in educational infrastructure is an exciting one. There is little doubt that colour has profound impacts on the academic performance and state of mind of students, teachers and visitors alike. The new range of BRIGHT stair nosings from Classic compliments colour schemes within schools and tertiary institutions whilst also ensuring safety for all, helping to create a positive environment which nurtures intelligence, creativity and learning whilst minimising disruptions. Big Challenges for Australia’s Flooring Sector by Andrew Heaton
Despite a comeback in new home construction, conditions within the flooring industry in Australia remain extremely challenging, leaders within the sector say. One would think flooring would enjoy an upswing commensurate with any boon in housing. Australian Timber Flooring Industry Association CEO Randy Flierman said, however, that notwithstanding a recent upturn observed during most of the past year, quarterly data that his organisation has collected regarding the timber segment of the market specifically since the middle of 2010 indicated a 60 per cent decline in the production and sale of local timber species for flooring during that time. Moreover, while other products such as laminates, bamboo, pre-finished solids and engineered timber were continuing to do reasonably well and were finding their own respective place in the market, traditional products such as parquetry and cork were also struggling. Flierman said underlying challenges of recent years have extended beyond competition from imports and have largely reflected underlying weakness in consumer sentiment. “Only a small part of the decline [in timber flooring] has been picked up by imported products such as bamboo, laminates and engineered Oak flooring, suggesting the decline is both related to consumers’ changing habits over the four year downturn in consumer confidence, looking for a lower price-point; and consumers also showing preference for other purchase priorities such as vehicles and IT/electrical goods,” he said. Michael Keam, strategic marketing manager of Armstrong World Industries (Aust) Pty Ltd agrees that conditions are tough. He said suppliers within the commercial space in particular have been
left ‘fighting for the crumbs’ amid a pullback in government investment in public sector buildings.
“Only a small part of the decline [in timber flooring] has been picked up by imported products such as bamboo, laminates and engineered Oak flooring, suggesting the decline is both related to consumers’ changing habits over the four year downturn in consumer confidence, looking for a lower price-point; and consumers also showing preference for other purchase priorities...” Keam said Australia “certainly has a high level of suppliers of materials to the flooring industry,” and that as a developed nation and wealthy economy, the Australian market is seen by some as an opportunity for higher margins compared with other markets. While potential importers see places such as China as an easy place to source inexpensive product, Keam warned service levels and support once materials are delivered can be problematic. Armstrong employs a sourcing and technical support team based in China to conduct regular site visits and to liaise with local vendors. Flierman agrees that international competition has intensified, albeit with this being somewhat mitigated at the moment with the decline in the Australian dollar. He said while lower-priced products such as bamboo and laminate did well in a low confidence environment during the GFC, European Oak had become much
more prominent in recent times. When it comes to sustainability, Flierman said local flooring materials come predominately from Australian Forestry Standard certified projects and generally ‘win hands down’ compared to imported products. He added that wide board sales are becoming increasingly popular with consumers taking preference to 180-millimetre wide boards and shifting from strip timber flooring on joists to 14-millimetre thick overlay on ply over concrete slabs. Keam agrees that sustainability has become increasingly important. He said increasingly aware and environmentally conscious consumers are identifying areas of concern for their particular circumstances, and are requiring detailed information on things such as the chain of custody of timber, indoor air quality (TVOC levels), maintenance requirements and slip and fire resistance. The flooring sector is benefiting from recent growth in residential construction, with Flierman saying there has been a general pickup in conditions in recent quarters. He said timber flooring specifically was benefiting from the growth in multiresidential building and that it was a ‘myth’ that solid timber flooring could not be installed in multi-residential properties. “The timber flooring industry generally is benefiting from the growth in multiresidential building, those with targeted marketing and solutions for acoustically rated floors are doing well, both from a producer and installer perspective,” he said. “The important factor is that every building is different and no one acoustic system serves all situations, using installers experienced in this area is vital. To destroy a myth, in addition to laminates, bamboo and engineered flooring, solid timber floors can be installed in multi-residential properties, with a wide range of acoustic solutions available, one can be found to suit the majority of timber flooring projects.” Article originally published in sourceable.net

Improve Operational Efficiencies with the Makinex Dual Pressure Washer What makes Makinex tick?
Makinex Construction Products are passionate about creating products that increase productivity by providing faster, easier and safer ways to get difficult jobs done.
What is a Makinex Dual Pressure Washer (DPW 4000 or DPW 2500)
One such product is the Makinex Dual Pressure Washer 4000 (DPW). The Makinex DPW is a hard surfaces pressure cleaner that combines a rotary and wand in the one machine, enabling the user to swap between them at the turn of a handle. The efficiencies offered by the duo functionality within the one machine when cleaning external hard surfaces is a must in today’s competitive facilities management environment and is unique to the Makinex DPW.
What applications are the DPW best suited for? The DPW is highly versatile and can be used on a variety of hard surfaces from schools and sporting surfaces to driveways and footpaths. If it’s a hard surface, the DPW can clean it! 74 | Flooring Oct/Nov 2018
Why would you choose a DPW over a hand-held pressure washer and/or whirl away? There are many benefits in choosing to use a Makinex DPW and these include: 1. It’s a rotary, wand pump and engine all combined in the one machine providing you with greater efficiencies 2. Able to adjust water pressure from 1000 up to 4000 PSI 3. No license is required to operate it 4. As a push behind machine it’s user friendly which also reduces operator fatigue 5. A range of nozzles tips come as standard enabling the user to vary the angle of their spray
How has the DPW helped Makinex customers?
Makinex are proud to say the DPW has helped many customers since it’s development in 2013. One such company is Dynamic Sports Surfaces, a civil construction and project management company who oversee the design, construction and refurbishment of sports facilities within Australia.
Around 18 months ago, they purchased a Makinex Dual Pressure Washer and have been impressed at how it’s helped improve efficiencies within their business.
www.flooringmagazine.com.au
Sandra of Dynamic Sports facilities had this to say; “The Makinex DPW has vastly improved the operational efficiencies of our business. The combined rotary and wand functions has meant no more stopping on the job to swap between two different machines.” Another customer, Kangaroo Courts Australia are satisfied with how the DPW has helped them reduce inefficiencies and save time on the job. With over 30 years’ experience in the installation of sports surfaces across Australia, they know when a product is giving them a good return! This is what Scott from Kangaroo Courts Australia had to say about the Makinex DPW; “The way a court falls means you’re constantly having to swap between the rotary and pressure wand to clear away the dirty water. The fact the Makinex DPW has both functions on the one machine, has enabled to complete the jobs I do 30% faster!”

What is Mechanically Polished Concrete? Mechanically polished concrete is a beautiful, impressive flooring finish that retains its impression and lustre and hardness without any polyurethane coating or epoxy floor coating. Polished Concrete Floors
Polished concrete is created by using heavy-duty polishing machines, outfitted with progressively finer grits of diamond impregnated segments or disks, to gradually hone down concrete surfaces. This method, comparable to using sandpaper, allows the crew to create the desired shine and smoothness. It begins with coarse diamond segments, bonded in a metallic matrix. Just like sandpaper, these segments remove minor pits, blemishes, stains, and light coatings from the floor.
www.flooringmagazine.com.au
Depending on the condition of the concrete, this initial rough grinding is usually a three to four step process. Next, diamond abrasives embedded in a plastic or resin matrix are used to “fine grind” the floor. Contractors use ever-finer grits of polishing disks until the floor has the desired sheen. If an extremely high-gloss finish is required, a final grit of 1500 or finer may be used. An experienced polishing concrete flooring crew will know when to switch to a finer grit by studying the floor surface, and observing the amount of material being removed. A chemical hardener or densifier is then used to penetrate the concrete, creating a reaction that hardens and dust-proofs the surface. The result is a floor surface that is stunning, durable, easy to clean with an effective maintenance system to maintain the shine that you initially create. Learning the process On demand is the 2 day Polished Concrete Training course offered by Pyrafloor Polished Concrete – and – All Preparation Equipment to train and
educate flooring contractors on the process involved to creating impressive floors. This hands on training course gives you experience in the process along with practical and theory learning to understand the process. After the initial removal of product, adhesive or existing coating from the surface the floor is then prepared using diamond tools to flatten and resurface the floor ready to polish. Throughout the process different product and tooling is used to refine the concrete floor surface. Using resin bond polishing pads, densifiers, grouts and chemicals the surface is mechanically hardened and polished to create an impressive concrete finish.

Getting the best production from your concrete grinder means having the right diamond for the job. And choosing the right diamond is as easy as A, B, C! Onsite the Schwamborn Concrete Grinders thrive being put alongside glue, adhesive, coating removal as well as finishing flooring surfaces on new construction sites like this one. With a wide range of diamond tooling available for every brand of machine, it’s important you know what diamonds to use in each application. On hand held, single phase and three phase concrete floor grinders different tooling achieves different results.
A. Grit; The size of diamonds in each segment
Different diamond grits will give you a different finish on the concrete: A lower grit in the grinding wheel will give you a more aggressive cut, for faster removal of concrete, but with more scratches on the finished product. A higher grit in the grinding wheel will give you a more passive cut, for slower removal of concrete, but with a smoother finish.
B. Bond; the part of the diamond that holds the grinding grit in place www.flooringmagazine.com.au
As the diamond bond wears away, it allows the grit to be exposed, which makes for a faster cut. Which bond to choose will depend on the hardness of the concrete you’re dealing with. Always choose the opposite hardness bond to the concrete surface you’re grinding. This will allow the bond to wear away more easily, opening up the diamond and ensuring it resharpens.
C. Segments; the shape and size of your diamond grinding shoe or wheel.
The more aggressive the shape of your segment, the faster your diamond will work for grinding, cutting, or removal. With a more ‘passive’ looking segment, you’ll tend to have slower removal, but a smoother finish. The number of segments too will have an effect on your results. The fewer segments you have, the more aggressive your results will be, as there is more pressure on each point. Diamond grinding shoes will grind down over time. If you’re not getting enough speed with the type and shape of segments you are running, try changing the grit or the bond.

A great-looking carpet is one that gets vacuumed regularly, ideally every day. Axminster recommends if your vacuum has a beater bar, such as a SEBO or brush head, that’s even better. Take it slowly so the vacuum has enough time to clean from deep in the tufts, and concentrate on well-trodden areas like stairs, hallways and in front of chairs. Not only does Axminster recommend SEBO vacuum cleaners to correctly care and maintain their wool products but so do many other carpet manufacturers overseas and locally here in Australia. Densi Crete Solves Concrete Moisture Issues for National Retailer
Moisture is the archenemy of concrete! When you walk into a building that has damp flooring you can often smell it. This is exactly why architects, building contractors, and water proofers turn to DuraCore for an easy and effective solution that is kind to the environment. DuraCore Concrete Protection Systems use the latest technology to provide: • A complete range of concrete protection products for concrete repair, moisture proofing, surface protection, and sealing. • Products that are 100% environmentally friendly. One such contractor that has been putting their trust in DuraCore since 2012, is Dynacoat Painters an Australian family owned business that has been operating on Queensland’s Gold Coast since 1996. For a recent project, BCF at Taren Point with a store covering 1100m2; the site inspection revealed that the concrete slab had moisture issues and upon removal of the existing floor coverings an Australian Standards’ Moisture Test was completed. The floor needed to conform to the Australian Standards for moisture content prior to installing new impervious epoxy floor coverings. The experts at
DuraCore proposed the use of Densi Crete to bring the concrete’s excess moisture to within the Australian Standard guidelines. Made of a 100% pure colloidal silica, for the protection of new or old concrete, Densi Crete has zero VOC and provides exceptional concrete waterproofing. The product is used to cure, waterproof, densify, purge oil, and to seal the concrete from any contamination, while also being used extensively in the polished concrete industry. For the purposes of the BCF store, Densi Crete provided permanent waterproofing of the concrete floor. Additionally, the product purged contamination and odours from the old concrete slab, and immediately halted contaminant ingress. The real win was thatthere was minimal site disruption – after just an hour, people could get back in to do other work while the Densi Crete completed its process. Densi Crete is a great solution for flooring in factories, retail environments, corporate buildings, and private residences. It significantly diminishes the permeability of the concrete, producing an effective, internal, permanent, colloidal silica barrier. As illustrated in the diagrams below, the untreated surface allows the penetration of salts, effluents, gases and moisture and is prone to dusting, whereas the treated surface provides a solution to these problems. Brendan Sievers, Director of Dynacoat Painters, has been using Densi Crete for projects over the past six years and was once again delighted with the outcome. According to Brendan, Densi Crete “worked perfectly again on this project; removing the moisture and allowing the project to get back on schedule with minimal delay or site disruption”.
