AUG/SEP 2018 VOL.34 NO.3

Welcome to this edition of Supplier Magazine – issue #199, which presents an overview and snapshot of the recent AWISA exhibition held in Sydney in July – the biggest in its very long history. The biennial exhibition was a must-visit for all woodworking professionals – production managers, designers, CEOs etc, and the four-day event didn’t disappoint: showcasing all the very latest technology; the newest applications and the most innovative products to help your business succeed. There were working machinery demonstrations as well as comparisons of the latest software, tooling hardware and a variety of ancillary products. Supplier Magazine was also at AWISA this year (as we are every year) and according to organisers and exhibitors, the feedback on this year’s Show was extremely positive. AWISA occupied 40% more space than ever before with in excess of 10,000 visitors attending. In this issue of the Magazine, we bring you some of the highlights. It was impossible to cover it all, but we feel we came close! As this was my first AWISA, it was great to put faces to names, meet a lot of hardworking people and take it all in. Enjoy this issue of Supplier Magazine…

Recent Releases from Grass The perfect combo for drinks compartment flaps: Kinvaro D and Tiomos flap hinge With these two new products, in 2017 GRASS increased the comfort of opening and closing flap cabinets. For interzum Tiomos was also presented as a flap hinge; together with the equally new Kinvaro D flap holder, it forms a harmonious and elegant combo for drinks compartment flaps. Both products are also available in the new "Night" surface finish, continuing the elegance of dark surfaces on 12 the interior of the piece of furniture.

“The new Satin finish really provides our customers with more design choice, offering a completely different look and feel to our original Gloss finish” said Meika Doonan, General Manager, DECO. “It also really helps to provide a more life-like appearance to some of our designs that feature the look of natural materials like sandstone, timber and marble – especially when used in external spaces, like outdoor kitchens and BBQ areas.” DecoSplash is made from 2mm solid aluminium flat sheet and is coated with a polyurethane powder coating before the selected image, pattern or design is sublimated – or baked – into the powder coated surface. The result is a vibrant, crisp image that will never peel, smudge or rub off. Being aluminium, DecoSplash is completely noncombustible, complies to the Australian Standards Gas Installation Code (AS 5601) and is safe to use behind both gas and electric cooktops. It is also light weight and easy to install, requiring only double-sided tape and silicon to secure the splashback directly to the wall surface; perfect for DIY renovations or cabinet makers who don’t have time to wait for glass or tile installations. DecoSplash is available in large 3.6 x 1.5 metre sheets and can be cut to size to suit any space. Designs can also be set across multiple panels with absolute precision for seamless joins. DecoSplash is distributed nationally by Lincoln Sentry. ● 10 | SupplierAug/Sep 2018

Nova Pro Scala: always a bit different Nova Pro slide technology, already proven millions of times over in practical use, is now progressing to the next generation. With the comprehensive new drawer range Nova Pro Scala, GRASS is presenting a system which offers the variability to harmonise with the contemporary styles of tomorrow’s living spaces. As well as impressing with entirely novel functionality, the innovative drawer system represents a true design innovation that sets new standards. This is borne out not only by the keen interest within the kitchen and furniture industry, but also by the recent award from the German Design Council honouring the GRASS product design. Despite being up against the best in the business, Nova Pro Scala succeeded in winning the internationally acclaimed German Design Award 2016 in the Industry category of the Excellent Product Design. The range is continually being updated. The latest addition: a model with a high box-drawer for design-conscious customers.

Organisation system and timeless design object: Tavinea "Organised by GRASS" With Tavinea GRASS has a comprehensive interior accessory system for drawers in its portfolio that is also a sensually perceptible design object. At interzum 2017 the system was supplemented with another: the simple, strong Tavinea Sorto frame system for drawers that is perfectly complemented by Tavinea Optima, a dividing system for Nova Pro and Vionaro pot drawers.

TIOMOS Hidden: the hinge becomes invisible With the development of the Tiomos hinge system, GRASS has ushered in a new era in the history of furniture design. With the concealed Tiomos Hidden hinge, which was launched at interzum 2017, the company has added another component that makes it possible to move doors elegantly and almost invisibly.

Convenient opening and closing now has a new name: Tipmatic Soft-close Easy operation and style are features that customers appreciate when buying furniture. Neither is always immediately visible from the outside of a kitchen, and the concealed movement systems can be a real experience in everyday use. The GRASS range now features a new highlight for kitchens, bathrooms and living areas: Tipmatic Soft-close, a system that perfectly combines two popular comfort aspects.â—?

Concelo by Hideaway Redefining What You Should Expect from a Waste Bin Concelo by Hideaway is a brand new waste bin range that was launched to the market at AWISA in July. Concelo by Hideaway has been designed to deliver a bin without compromise. It takes all the best features you would expect from a Hideaway Bin and improves them, totally redefining what you should expect from a waste bin.

L-R: Jesse Staines, General Manager with Jamie Bertelsen, Director, at AWISA 2018.

14 | SupplierAug/Sep 2018

7 years of Research and Development by the well-known New Zealand owned and operated company Kitchen King Ltd, has seen every element of the waste bin reengineered and tested to ensure it delivers both the form and function that should be expected from a premium kitchen appliance. Concelo by Hideaway boasts not just a clean design aesthetic that compliments premium drawers, it also helps keep your kitchen looking and smelling clean. Managing waste can be a challenge, but Concelo is the easiest bin in the world to keep clean, all parts unclip and can be easily hand washed to keep them looking crisp and clean. Concelo boasts a new Active Lid designed to help control odours. The Active Lid is hidden from sight at the top of the bin inside the cabinet and drops down to close over the buckets when the bin is closed. When the bin is opened, the lid lifts up and away to allow an unhindered running action. Concelo bins run on smooth synchronised runners that include a fluid damper for a seamless closing action. Like all Hideaway Bins, the

runners over-extend to ensure the back bucket will come clear of the bench top. Flexible mounting options allow Concelo to be top and or side mounted, meaning it can be mounted into any cabinet width for design flexibility. Mounting at bench height allows the most ergonomic positioning of the bin to easily dispose of waste. Available in 2 colour options; Arctic White to match ever popular white drawers, or Cinder to suit the growing trend for darker coloured hardware. Concelo is also compatible with electronic push to open mechanisms. When combined with the Active Lid, you now have the perfect hands-free waste bin solution! There is no other bin in the world like it! Concelo redefines what you should expect from a waste bin, why would you compromise with anything less. â—?

GOL D STAR AWARDS

And the Winners are… Every AWISA, Supplier Magazine presents its Gold Star awards for products that demonstrate excellence in innovation and value to the wood and allied manufacturing sector. At AWISA in Sydney this year the industry was provided with plenty of new and original product. While all of it was worthwhile and of a high standard, there is always some product that stands out from the rest. This year our judges were very impressed with many of the new products on display but set out to judge our winners based on the criteria we have used for previous shows. Previous awards have gone mainly to machinery, tooling and hardware products but this year, software supporting industry 4.0 manufacturing featured strongly. The criteria for the award is that the product could be any exhibited at AWISA but the product must be exhibited at AWISA in the year it's bestowed. It could be a new product or a product that has undergone recent significant development or improvement. The product must be original or a major development of an original idea produced by that Company. The product could build on an existing technology (such as a cabinet hinge) but the product must exhibit significant original development. The product must move the industry forward through innovation. This year we have six awards so in alphabetical order, let’s get started. Biesse wins a Gold Star for the Sophia IOT software platform, developed in collaboration with professional service company Accenture. Sophia is an acronym for Services; Optimisation; Predictivity; Human; Innovation; Analysis. Based on the connection to a cloud service and special sensors applied to Biesse machinery; technical data on the performance of your machine is collected in real-time and used by the Biesse services platform to improve productivity and predict maintenance requirements. The manufacturer can 16 | SupplierAug/Sep 2018

Biesse Sophia

access reports and data required to make decisions about his machine performance, all on his mobile device. Sophia also connects with a parts portal for ordering of replacement parts. Sophia also won at the Xylexpo technology awards in Milan. Hafele wins a Gold Star for their Connect smart home, released last year at Interzum to huge crowds

and great interest. Hafele Connect links and controls lighting, sound and furniture movements through their plug and play system, either through an app or a voice-activated controller they call ‘echo.’ Hafele actively pursues innovative technologies such as new design for inspiration to interior designers; and pushes the technology and design for small-space living. 18

SCM Maestro Connect

Hideaway Concelo

Homag Intelliguide

18 | SupplierAug/Sep 2018

Hideaway Bins wins a Gold Star for their Concelo bin. Seven years in the development, this product from the New Zealand family owned and operated company Kitchen King has taken just about every consideration into account. From installation and six-way adjustment; full extension so the rear bin can be removed without taking out the front bin; sealing of odours through an automatic active lid to cleaning through the simple removal of all cleanable elements. This product is an appliance in every sense of the word and just as important as a fridge or dishwasher. The system is push-to-open compatible and the installation at bench height is the ideal position for removing food scraps. Concelo is clever, smart, well-designed and is superior to every other waste system on the market; it’s a significant step forward and welldeserved for a Gold Star. Homag wins a Gold Star for their Intelliguide operator assistance system. On panel saws and edge banding machines provided by the Homag Group, the operator is directed as to the orientation of the specific panel to be machined through a system of lasers, cameras and LED lighting. And if the operator picks up the wrong panel the system will recognise this and alter the program without any manual intervention. This is really what industry 4.0 (in the manufacturing context) is all about. The system is available in three levels from basic to advanced but every level has distinct manufacturing advantages. The judges note that a Gold Star would have been awarded to Homag for their Tapio open ecosystem technology platform but as it has yet to be released in Australia, does not yet qualify under the award criteria. www.suppliermagazine.com.au

WoodTech Anderson GS Series

SCM wins a Gold Star for their Maestro Digital Systems platform Maestro Connect. Only released recently at the Xylexpo fair in Milan, Maestro Connect is SCM’s IoT (Internet of Things) Industry 4.0 platform that collects and analyses data retrieved from SCM machines to monitor and optimise production processes. It enables full control of production performance by the manufacturer. It also allows other services such as predictive, timely and smart maintenance and optimized spare parts management.

Maestro Connect is not just a maintenance app; it’s an intelligent production aid that observes actual production data and is able to plan corrective actions. Wood Tech wins a Gold Star for the Anderson GS Series of CNC machines fitted with the ‘Magdrive’ Linear Motion Technology. The award is for the drive technology fitted to a CNC machine that is similar to that used on the maglev train. Maglev stands for ‘magnetic levitation’ and in a train, can achieve 600 kilometres per hour. Wood

Tech claims it’s the first woodworking machine of its type in the World to be fitted with such a drive and the benefits include reduced wear; less noise and super-fast acceleration speeds. High speeds have been hyped in the past but acceleration speeds have always resulted in machinery that never meets its potential. The Anderson GS Series is different because of the acceleration provided by friction-free axes. Of all the technology seen at AWISA, the maglev driven Anderson GS Series is arguably the stand-out of the show. ●

Honourable Mentions for Outstanding Products In addition to Supplier Magazine’s Gold Star awards presented at every AWISA show; honourable mentions are bestowed on other products and technologies that also contribute to the furniture manufacturing industries. In the case of an honourable mention, the item will often not be a new product. It could be a significant revision or re-design of an existing product or it could be an alternate solution to a product that is on the market by another manufacturer. For example, Wood Tech group was awarded an Honourable Mention in 2016 for the Griggio Unica Safe retractable-blade panel saw. The principle was not new but the technology had been adapted for use on industrial panel-cutting machinery and represented a step forward for the industry. At the same AWISA HolzHer was awarded an Honourable Mention for the Ltronic zero-join edge banding module. Winning a Gold Star at the Brisbane AWISA in 2014 for the original development, the new interchangeable design solved the issue of too great an "open time" when several different gluing units are permanently fixed to the in-feed. Our awards are listed in alphabetical order.

Hettich Wingline L

An honourable mention goes to Blum for the Aventos HK top. The new Aventos HK top stay lift is less than half the size of the superseded Aventos HK model. It has a new clean-cut design that harmonises beautifully with cabinet interiors. Blum’s latest lift system for stay lifts is easily installed close to the top panel so it blends into the furniture. The newly designed, minimalist Blum Aventos

20 | SupplierAug/Sep 2018

cover caps come in different colours and give great freedom of design. Aventos HK top can be equipped with three different motion technologies: soft-close Blumotion, the Servo-Drive electric motion support system or the mechanical Tip-On opening support system. An honourable mention goes to Hettich for their Wingline L folding sliding door system. The product is suitable for wardrobes; alcoves like under-stair spaces or in top mounted kitchen units. Wingline L is a ‘Push-Pull to Move’ opening mechanism that opens an entire door set with just one push or pull, with or without a handle. The fitting opens a surprisingly large section of the entire cabinet, leaving more space in the room. Because WingLine L keeps door protrusion to a minimum there is nothing to get in the way of drawers and extensions. The product creates panoramic effects and design flexibility. The judges liked that the product can be used under stairs and sloping ceilings as well as in alcoves. The folding door fitting provides a way of using this potential storage space and making it look attractive. www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Homag B-320 Robot Saw

An honourable mention goes to Homag for their Sawteq B-320 robot saw. The SAWTEQ B-320 flexTec cutting cell with fully automatic part stacking further develops batch size one production using a robot mounted on top of the beam saw. It enables the creation and efficient processing of highly flexible cutting patterns. It is systematically designed for batch size 1 production and works automatically with just one saw; the robot takes over all handling operations up to the ejection of the part from the cell. The Sawteq B-320 was exhibited in Milan as part of their award-winning Autonomous Cell and had the Homag Group Australia exhibited the Autonomous technology they did in Milan it would certainly have won a Gold Star. An honourable mention goes to Vauth Sagel for their Cornerstone MAXX corner unit solution, now with planero desgn. The innovative system for corner cabinets brings the contents of two tray-like shelves fully in front of the

unit. The often badly or even completely unused spaces in the corner unit are therefore made usable in an extremely comfortable way. CORNERSTONE MAXX does not obstruct the adjacent units as it swings out and comes to rest fully in front of its own unit. The product was launched in May 2017 and has recently been nominated for the German Design Award 2018 An honourable mention goes to Wood Tech for their ‘Hive’ automated panel store. Other storage solutions have been around for many years but this one is unique in that it was designed and built right here in Australia; in fact, Wood Tech tells us that even the software is written here. The definite advantage of the Hive is that any support can be provided from right here in Australia. The Hive is available is several configuration options and at AWISA we saw the 90-degree, or one-quarter of a circle version storing 500 parts. The system is available up to a full 360-degree and WoodTech Hive

Vauth Sagel

storing 2,000 individual cabinet parts. Various configurations of panel in and outfeed are also available to suit your individual production preferences. An honourable mention goes to Woodtron for the Tower Panel Warehouse. Released last AWISA in Melbourne, partly to gauge interest in the concept; this significant update is now double-sided giving the user twice the storage space. Unlike most automated warehouse systems that stack panels in (often) random order; the Woodtron tower keeps every board type separate and is ideal for just-intime manufacture. Both the Woodtron Tower and Wood Tech Hive systems make use of the height of your workshop instead of taking up often valuable (and scarce) floor space. Other improvements include cables to catch the board if the vacuum fails; and the capacity to store 60 colours. And if you really want to prepare a ‘rainbow’ pack the night before, you can with the Australian– designed Woodtron Tower. ● Woodtron

4 Kitchen & Cabinet Manufacturers reveal how Empower Factory Productivity & Job Scheduling Software has transformed factory productivity and profit By Sean O’Sullivan, B Com (Hons) Otago University

ALBY TURNER & SON (ADELAIDE, SA) “I’d estimate around 15% increase in our factory productivity; we had very significant and distinct improvements within the first 6-12 months of implementation, however, we’ve had some slippage of late. Once we implement the cloud, I’d expect that to increase by 5%-10% again.”

RIVERLAND CABINETMAKERS

(RIVERLAND, SA)

“Using Empower Factory Productivity Software we have maintained our weekly production with 40% less factory staff. This is a 66% increase in our factory productivity.”

Key Points • Productivity – time on jobs against budget (job, order, staff, staff group..) 1. Budget vs actual time for workshop performance by team and by individual staff member. 2. Value of labour on the job for job costing within our accounting software. • Production – current job status, forward work, due by date 1. Not currently using to any extent, but would like to evaluate scheduling following cloud implementation

Key Points • Ease of use • Real time Tracking of Employees • Assists in Costing Projects. Knowing real times projects are taking and what processes need attention. • This Software has got management working a lot more closely with our factory floor staff. AW ISA 2018

AWISA at Home at ICC Sydney

AKE from Salestech

Philip Ashley reports AWISA is our very own International trade show for the cabinet; joinery; furniture; timber and panel industries. In recent years it’s moved from the old Sydney exhibition centre at Darling Harbour to Brisbane, then Melbourne while a new facility at Darling harbour was built. Returning to Sydney this year, the show attracted record crowds of satisfied show-goers and the organisers have just recently announced that it will return to the same venue mid-2020. You can expect that one to be even better than this. AWISA was held at the new Sydney International Convention Centre (ICC); a facility spanning multiple levels. The AWISA organisers put a lot of effort into making the venue work and very soon, any concerns about upstairs-downstairs were quickly dispelled. The reality was that for the design exhibitors upstairs, you could actually hear yourself speak and for the machinery exhibitors downstairs, the various stands seemed more accessible. One or two exhibitors may re-think their stand location for the next show but every exhibitor Supplier spoke to praised the event and the facility and will be back again in two years. The highlights from AWISA were everywhere. CAD design and manufacturing software continues to impress with World-leading software available to the Australian 28 | SupplierAug/Sep 2018

manufacturer. It’s getting easier to use; more powerful; more visually appealing from a design viewpoint and generally supports the latest industry 4.0 efforts for more total control of your equipment and manufacturing processes. This year, software platforms emerged to control even more of your manufacturing processes. All the major suppliers can provide a suitable software platform not only to control the machinery; but to report on its efficiency; allow remote access and control; troubleshoot any problems that may arise and predict maintenance issues. The major players can all provide overarching software for their computer based equipment. For example, Biesse has Sophia, released at the last Ligna show and SCM has Maestro Connect, released more recently at the Xylexpo fair in Italy. There is more to follow with Homag ‘turning-on’ their Tapio platform in the US recently and planning to release it in Australia in the very near future.

MACHINERY HIGHLIGHTS On the machinery front there were many highlights. One that caught our attention was the Anderson GS Series of nesting machines from Wood Tech Group with a magnetic drive similar to what is used for the high-speed maglev trains. A series of magnets push and others pull the work-

Masterwood

head up and down the axes at speeds unheard of before this machine. No wear and tear, less noise, incredible acceleration of the axes resulting in an almost 50% reduction in machining times. Anderson uses the maglev system on high-speed drilling machines used for example, in the drilling of PCD boards and their most widely known customers are Boeing and from this year, Airbus. They have a 25-year history of building their own drives and claim the GS series of nesting machines will have a 15 to 18 year minimum lifespan. On this machine there are no moving parts to move the X and Y axes and this saves on maintenance and reduces noise. The machine weighs 20 tonnes and this completely eliminates vibration. It has to be heavy due to the incredible speeds the machine is able to achieve. On other equipment the drives may take up to 300mm to reach the claimed travel speed but on the Anderson GS machine

this can be achieved in an (almost) unbelievable ten millimetres. Wood Tech has done successful tests with 10mm compression tools at 60 metres a minute. Wood Tech claim the drilling time is around a third of the time of their competitors. All this value comes at a price though, with the Anderson costing around 20% more; but with this machine doing the same amount of work as two others, the cost is of little concern. Also from Wood Tech we saw the Australian-made ‘Hive’ robotic vertical panel management system that in its 360-degree version will store up to 2,000 components on only 100 square metres of floor space. Homag exhibited a robotic storage cell in Melbourne last AWISA to quite a lot of interest so the technology is certainly welcome in Australia. The more common system of automated board storage uses available floor space that many companies don’t have, especially those that

www.suppliermagazine.com.au

are already established. The Homag and Wood Tech systems, along with the WoodTron Tower all utilise unused air space within the factory. The Wood Tech ‘Hive’ is manufactured by Australian companies and Wood Tech’s Ron Smythe says “The Hive can do 3,800 movements in a seven and a half hour shift. Most manufacturers have one or two production lines with around six people sorting parts and the Hive eliminates the labour, mistakes and damaged panels.” Woodtron continues to improve its vertical panel storage system that doesn’t rely on floor space and mixed stacks of panels. Geoff Sellman came up with the original idea that was exhibited as a concept in KDT from LEDA

Woodtron One

www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Melbourne that sold really well. Unlike most automated warehouse systems that stack panels in (often) random order; the Woodtron tower keeps every board type separate and is ideal for just-in-time manufacture. Other improvements include cables to catch the board if the vacuum fails; and the capacity to store 60 colours. And if you really want to prepare a ‘rainbow’ pack the night before, you can with the Australian–designed Woodtron Tower. They’ve added some additional safety features and now it’s available as a double-sided system that allows several bays to increase storage capacity. Using standard Dexion shelving, the system is very cost-effective. From Homag we saw the

Blum Minipress

continuing development of operator assisted working with their intelliguide operator assist system. intelliGuide is the first assistance system in the history of panel dividing technology that enables saws to respond to the actions of the machine operator in an intelligent and flexible manner. This means that you have full control over cutting and benefit from ideal processes. intelliGuide has a modular structure. It becomes more intelligent with each stage of expansion: from intelliGuide basic, to advanced, right through to professional. There is no longer any worry about machining the wrong part; intelliguide makes sure of the right part every time and if the wrong part is inserted, the software will alter the program so the right processing is done to that part. Where the operator assistance system is used on edge banding machines, two LED strips in the area of the workpiece infeed clearly show what the operator should do. This is achieved by the workpiece dimensions being displayed on the LED strips. The strips light up in different colours, thereby providing specific handling

instructions. Homag have committed to assisting the worker to get the most out of their machines now for the last twenty years or so. Machines can only run so fast and the operator needs to be as smart as the machine to get 100% of the benefit of the machine technology. The Homag Group also presented part of an automated cell previously displayed at the Xylexpo in Milan where it won a special award. On top of a beam saw sits a robot that is integrated into the saw machining cycle. No operator involvement is required to cut the parts of sort them onto several pallets. In the fuller version the robot takes the panels from the saw and feeds them onto either an edge banding or a CNC line with either standard or vertical CNC processing centres. It’s beautiful to watch and all the major players can supply a solution to meet every need. Not at AWISA but soon to come to Australia; SCM Group has a new combined end cutting and rounding unit for edge-banding machines that combines end cutting and rounding operations, executed with one tool, allowing the design SupplierAug/Sep 2018 | 29

Tempora features convincing; completely revised, solid machining units for the highest demands in a new design built on a solid, heavyduty machine base-frame incorporating precise dust extraction. The m-motion and x-motion Plus control ensures highest repeatability in setting accuracy and allows users to generate individual machining programs and to minimize setup time for fast processing and material change. If you need an automated panel warehouse system and your preferred supplier is Felder, rest assured because they now partner with Barbaric to provide a solution to your panel storage issues. Multicam now uses WIFI to transfer programs to the machine. They have autosquaring of the panels and automated vacuum, based on the sheet size. of machines with a small footprint. It won first place at the Xylexpo awards a few months ago and is great news for someone who needs a fully-functional edge bander in a small package. Stefan Kremer from Felder Group was there on Felder’s biggest stand to date with Dave Ackland from FSA (Window Solutions) demonstrating a Europeanstyle window processed on standard spindle moulders. type of joinery will figure strongly is building design as the World moves towards preserving precious resources and Australia will be no exception. Felder has for many years championed this type of joinery construction and their equipment does the job very well. Time as a resource was the focus in developing the new Felder Tempora edgebander series. Processing edges needs to be as quick, easy and efficient as possible.

making 150 machines a year and sell to large-production companies like Winnebago, Stratco and Jayco. Twenty years ago there were dozens of brands of these flat-bed routers but these are mostly all gone, however Multicam remains. They have their own people to write software for a wide range of applications, and develop their own drives and one-off jigs for specialist production. Altendorf Group was showing off their new company profile that now includes the Hebrock edge bander. There’s likely to be more news later this year when another brand may be added to the newly-named Altendorf Group, quite possibly a CNC processing machine. At AWISA an Altendorf panel saw with a cut-away table was on display to highlight the robust construction of this much-loved classic. From Holz-Her we learnt that the beam saw cutting carriage is now raised with a ball screw and servo drive and that only the sawblade is raised for the cut, not the whole motor assembly. It’s more precise; a lot faster and because the drive belts loosen when the saw blade 32 is lowered, they last longer.

Of interest at the Weinig/ Holz-Her stand was the ‘Storemaster’ automated warehouse that was fitted in between all of their show machines, proving that you don’t need to have a large open area to use such a system. The Weinig Group recently installed a Storemaster warehouse in a company that included a board turning device to flip panels over to apply labels. Seems that anything is possible these days, you just have to ask. Ville-Tec celebrated a birthday at AWISA this year. 22 years ago on 4th July 1996, Peter Ville-Buille started Ville-Tec. Today they still sell the Swiss Streibig 32 | SupplierAug/Sep 2018

brand of vertical (wall) panel saws in addition to Costa wide belt sanders and Gannomat glue dowel insertion machines. Costa has just built a new factory to produce wide belt machines wider than three metres. Costa doesn’t just sand wood but is proficient in a wide range of materials. If you were looking at something a little smaller and less costly than a five-axis machine, Beyond Tools could provide it. Their Rikon brand was released two years ago in Melbourne with only a few machines. Since then they have sold in their thousands and it’s not surprising. Rikon is built by the Chinese ISO9001 certified

QCR company and they produce bandsaws for many of the World’s machinery suppliers. We won’t mention them here but rest assured that up to the best bandsaws available from anyone, QCR is probably the manufacturer. Beyond Tools does not sell the Robland brand anymore, replacing that with the Rikon brand. Another new brand from Beyond Tools is TOUGHCUT. The brand was founded in Perth last year by Tony Mirabile. The range is named after the minerals West Australia is famous for like rutile (edge banders) and zircon (CNC processing). The machine colour is orange, based on the colour of iron ore. The brand is inspired by the West Australian ‘Tough’ family brand that made machinery from 1912 to 1991. Ausmach is a new company supplying machinery to the Australian market. Well-entrenched in the industry with a range of leading software under the IDACSPLUS name; the company supplies CAD, CAM and optimising software that you would instantly recognise. Ausmach is similar to the Wood Tech Group in that they import equipment from several reputable overseas suppliers. Their equipment currently includes CNC machines; edge-banders; beam saws; sanders; panel saws and dust extraction systems. In fact, everything required for kitchen and bathroom manufacture. Ausmach’s exhibits at AWISA included the German-made OTT edge banders and the new German-designed WOODPLUS CNC nesting machine with feed and outfeed tables.

HARDWARE HIGHLIGHTS In the design hall we saw many leading products from the many international suppliers. Notable amongst these was the Blum Aventos HK Top; a very neat push-to-open stay-lift for overhead cabinets. The new Aventos HK top stay lift, released May 2017 is less than half the size of the superseded Aventos HK model. It has a new cleancut design that harmonises beautifully with cabinet interiors. Blum’s latest lift system for stay lifts is easily installed close to the top panel so it blends into the furniture. Two different fixing systems make the installation of Aventos HK top quick and easy. You can either use premounted system screws and pegs or chipboard screws and an integrated template. The product is symmetrical and can be mounted to either side of the cabinet. The newly designed, minimalist cover caps come in different colours and give great freedom of design. Aventos HK top can be equipped with three different motion technologies: soft-close Blumotion, the Servo-Drive electric motion support system or the mechanical Tip-On opening support system. Two similar hinges have recently come onto the market and they are almost identical in design and application. The first is the Salice ‘Air’ corner hinge that won the Interzum “Best of the best” award in 2017. Air is described as “An innovative and revolutionary hinge which, despite its compactness and small size, delivers full functionality to furniture manufacturers.” The 34 hinge is fully adjustable in

three directions and also incorporates an integrated soft close mechanism for decelerated closing or the Push self-opening system for handle-less doors. Air is inserted into the top and bottom of the cabinet and the door and is practically invisible. Its small size means that the applications for Air are numerous: kitchens, bathrooms, living and bedroom furniture or display cabinets. A very clever compact design, imperceptible and unseen just like air: Salice says “Air is the new fusion of technology and aesthetics.” The other is the Tiomos hidden from Grass. It’s almost identical to the Salice Air, however on close inspection looks a little more refined. Grass states that “With the development of the Tiomos hinge system, GRASS has written a new chapter in the history of furniture design. With the concealed Tiomos Hidden 34 | SupplierAug/Sep 2018

hinge, which was launched at interzum 2017, GRASS has added another component that makes it possible to move doors elegantly and almost invisibly.” Andreas Marosch, Head of Marketing at GRASS, describes the company's approach "Customers want to express their personality with personalised furniture design. The technical components should be designed so that they take a back seat behind the furniture design or provide a specific aesthetic aspect in addition to the pure function." The latest product from the Tiomos series is a perfect example of this product philosophy: it really takes a back seat behind the furniture. Even better, it becomes one with the furniture and thus becomes almost invisible. The concealed Tiomos Hidden hinge is recessed in the cabinet and thereby is flush with the surfaces of the door and of the inside wall of the piece of furniture. However,

in terms of functionality, it certainly is not second-best compared to its visible colleagues: it is unusually strong, and can be adjusted in three dimensions. Tiomos Hidden features a damping mechanism in the closing action and allows for an opening angle of 105°. The minimum door thickness required is 18 millimetres. Hafele showed the Connect smart home, released last year at Interzum to huge crowds and great interest. Hafele Connect links and controls lighting, sound and furniture movements through their plug and play system, either through an app or a voice-activated controller they call ‘echo.’ It almost looks like they’ve skipped several stages of invention and gone straight into the next century. It’s no small claim to say this will change the way people live. Hafele actively pursues innovative technologies such as new design for inspiration to interior designers; and pushes the technology and design for small-space living. Be it a special drawer in which to charge your devices; cupboards that lower electronically for easy access; or parts of a bench top that pop up to reveal oft-used kitchen appliances or cookware, Hafele had a lot to show.

Hettich impressed with several advanced products including their Wingline L folding sliding door system. Hideaway Bins premiered their Concelo bin at the show to a huge amount of interest. Seven years in the development, this product from the New Zealand family owned and operated company Kitchen King has taken just about every consideration into account. Cleverly designed and much more than just a bin, this product shows what some effort, good design and clever thinking can do to a product that is equally as important to a kitchen as the refrigerator or dishwasher. This product is an appliance in every sense of the word. The system is push-to-open compatible and the installation at bench height is the ideal position for removing food scraps. Concelo is clever, smart, well-designed and is superior to every other waste system on the market. Vauth Sagel introduced their Cornerstone MAXX corner unit solution to Australia at AWISA. The product was launched in May 2017 and has recently been nominated for the German Design Award 2018. The innovative system for corner cabinets brings the contents of two tray-like shelves fully in front of the unit. The often badly or even completely unused spaces in the corner unit are made usable in an extremely comfortable way. CORNERSTONE MAXX does not obstruct the adjacent units as it swings out and comes to rest fully in front of its own unit. Also from Vauth Sagel was the newly developed VS COR Spin corner unit, previously

known as Galaxy Spin 90. The doors retract fully and allow the corner unit to spin through a full 360 degrees, brake after one turn and close the doors automatically. It will spin both clockwise and anticlockwise directions.

IOT SOFTWARE IoT software is about the new Industry 4.0 philosophy. IoT stands for the ‘Internet of Things’ and is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these things to connect and exchange data. The concept was discussed as early as 1982 with a modified Coke machine at Carnegie Mellon University that became the first Internetconnected appliance able to report its inventory and whether newly loaded drinks were cold. It’s estimated there will be 30 billion devices and a global IoT market value projected to reach US$7.1 trillion by 2020. It’s fair to say that you will be hearing a lot more about IoT in the future. SOPHIA is Biesse’s IoT software platform, developed in collaboration with professional service company Accenture. Sophia is an acronym for Services; Optimisation; Predictivity; Human; Innovation; Analysis. Based on the connection to a cloud service and special sensors applied to Biesse

machinery; technical data on the performance of your machine is collected in realtime and used by the Biesse services platform to improve productivity and predict maintenance requirements. The manufacturer can access reports and data required to make decisions about his machine performance, all on his mobile device. Sophia also connects with a parts portal for ordering of replacement parts. Sophia also won at the Xylexpo technology awards in Milan only a few months ago. Sophia is a digital platform that provides users with access to more machine information and initiates concrete actions to optimise performance and monitor the quality of the work produced, anticipating the causes of faults and providing clear solutions to resolve any anomalies. Sophia creates a digital infrastructure to underpin modern manufacturing. The data gathered and analysed by artificial intelligence is transformed into useful data to help optimise customer production and product quality, providing extremely valuable opportunities for growth. This information also provides customers with tools to prevent problems that could damage production. Thanks to SOPHIA, Biesse can take proactive steps to contact customers, reducing machine stoppages and inefficient timewasting. Over the past five months, connected machines have registered a 60% growth in productivity and the platform has highlighted that Biesse has handled more than 2,000,000 events of various types. “The results registered over these first few months demonstrate how the services

we offer our customers help increase the operating time of a machine and promote a proactive approach by reducing diagnostic times by 80%,” states Stefano Calestani, the Group’s new service innovation director. All of the major machinery suppliers are actively pursuing IoT software. At AWISA SCM Group presented their Maestro Digital Systems platform Maestro Connect. Maestro connect is able to offer customised micro services through the use of IoT Apps that support the daily activities of industry operators and improving the availability and use of machines or systems. Maestro connect works to connect the SCM Machines to the internet; monitor, examine and analyse data; collect all cloud-based machine data and finally, decide and act to improve productionrelated issues. What you get is a system that reviews machine status both live and on a historical basis. Virtual reality from SCM

flow. It monitors instantaneous, live operation of the machine and its components and currently running programs. It provides you with lists of machine programs run within a given timeframe with best time and average running time and finally, displays alarms, both active and historical warnings. SCM Group’s Maestro Connect also provides a first approach to predictive maintenance by sending notifications when machine components indicate a pre-determined critical state. In this way, it is possible to take action and schedule maintenance services without any down-time. By constantly monitoring the use of components, Smart Maintenance offers a genuine condition-based maintenance

service that allows action to be taken based on the efficiency of the components. Smart Maintenance also makes SCM’s support to customers more specifically targeted and faster through a constant flow of data from the machine to the Service suppliers. This year the value of AWISA to suppliers of machines, tools, equipment and hardware was evident in the high number of overseas supplier principals that attended the show. Product experts were everywhere to explain and demonstrate the many new pieces of equipment, software and hardware at the show. The upstairs design hall was no exception where the very latest design elements from around the World were on

show. It was an exceptional experience and every visitor took some new ideas from the event. The suppliers were very pleased as well, with most reporting excellent sales from the show and many reporting sales records broken, an indication of the strength of Australia’s wood manufacturing sector. AWISA is much more than a local show; it’s an international event and brings the very best the World has to offer to the local trade. While attracting fewer visitors than the more

densely populated countries, AWISA punches above its weight in terms of quality; value for money; visitors per capita and relevance to the local industry. Ligna in Hannover; Interzum in Cologne; AWFS Las Vegas (all three in odd-numbered years) and Holz-Handwerk in Nuremberg this year are the international shows most likely to be visited by Australian manufacturers but AWISA is the one not to be missed and a record ten thousand visitors gave it the thumbs-up. ●

Ingenious Kitchen Product on Show at AWISA A builder-turned-entrepreneur has developed a kitchen product that is in such high demand, people already started ordering it before it’s official launch back in August. Named Point Pod, and recently showcased at AWISA 2018 in Sydney, this product finally solves the problem of not having enough power outlets in your kitchen by hiding a pop-up unit beneath your stone or timber bench top. Simply press the top of the unit, and power points and USB sockets emerge for use. But unlike other power options, it blends seamlessly into your bench top, so it doesn’t comprise the design of your kitchen. Point Pod was designed and developed by a Brisbane builder, Cameron Singer, who was frustrated with the limited options on the market. “I developed Point Pod two years ago out of my own frustration of the limited power options available,” says Mr Singer. “After renovating my own house, and I was disappointed with what was available to improve access to power for my island bench. There were products online, but they looked so cheap and flimsy in a kitchen we’d spent a lot of money renovating.” “Point Pod units give functional space when you need power at the bench, without compromising the aesthetics of your bench space.” “I believe so much in this product, that I’ve decided to give up my building business to fully pursue bringing this to the market. It’s taken me two years to get it ready, and now we’re about to launch it.”

Up to 50%* increase of factory productivity Up to 30%* reduction of labour cost

Cameron Singer at the Point Pod stand at AWISA 2018

Point Pod will officially launch its first two products – Point Pod Multi and Point Pod Compact –in late August, but already there’s been quite a buzz in the industry. “I’ve started spreading the word at trade shows, and I’ve been quite overwhelmed by the response. I knew there was a need for a product like Point Pod, but it’s become clear that it’s something people have been looking for,” says Mr Singer. Point Pod will be marketed through cabinetmakers, kitchen companies, architects and interior designers as well as being promoted at trade shows. The units are designed for any space where you would use power on a bench top, including the kitchen, bathroom, office and boardroom. “Point Pod is waterproof and robust and meets all Australian Standards as well as stringent in house testing,” says Mr Singer. “Point Pod is a company dedicated to exceptional design. I started Point Pod to deliver products that are driven by what the market wants for functionality, whilst addressing the aesthetics of the environment.” ●

AW ISA 2018

AWISA Stone AWISA is much more than a furniture production trade fair; it’s a showcase for everything the industry has to offer, including stone, glass and advanced products manufacturing. At this year’s show in Sydney all of the major players were on display. It’s not the biggest show for stone manufacturing but the furniture industry is increasingly becoming more product-oriented and stone features strongly in modern design. The trend for living areas with multiple uses has taken the kitchen from a place to cook, to a meeting place for friends and family. The kitchen is no longer isolated, but linked to the rest of the home and the materials used are more important than even for interior design. At AWISA this year in July there were many suppliers of stone fabrication equipment and accessories. These included Breton; CDK; Farnese; Intermac; TQ Stone products and the Wood Tech Group. Products included bridge saws; CNC processing machines; edge polishing machines; tooling and from CDK, laser site measuring and template production. More cabinetmakers are ‘getting into’ stone fabrication to supplement their cabinet production or to offer their customers a more complete service; and because they already use CNC equipment, usually find the evolution much easier than they imagined it would be. Michael and Kerry Evans of Pacific Kitchens in Far North Queensland say “We wanted another slice of the market but more importantly, needed to offer our customers a more complete, seamless service. Now we deliver the cabinets and stone tops together and our customers are very happy.” This year Breton presented their patented Combicut dj/nc 550 combination machine with both a saw and water jet cutting. Working through 5-axes, this machine enables the manufacturer to cut the slab to size, followed by the cutting of shapes on vertical and inclined angles with the water jet tool. Breton claims you don’t have to move the slab during the entire process. The Combicut is two machines 42 | SupplierAug/Sep 2018

in one but does not allow the production of shaped profiles. For shaped cutting of bull-nose, shark-nose and other shapes, Breton presents the NC 300 K26 EVO; a meaty product name but a machine with a generous polymeric table and front access through two generous foldaway safety doors. Breton’s software allows the production of all kinds of stone products including 3D relief cuts. CDK Stone presented two machines this year, the patented GMM extra CNC Bridge Saw and the IDEA Top 33.16 CNC processing centre. CDK is a one-stop shop for everything stone and offer no less than six bridge saws; eight CNC processing machines; four edge processing machines; water jet and mitre saw as well as software, tools and accessories and software. CDK Stone’s GMM extra CNC Bridge Saw presented at AWISA is fitted with automatic measurement of the slab thickness and tool wear. It has a hydraulic tilting table and can be fitted with a camera to photograph the slab for working out the optimum cutting pattern from the material. Like most Bridge Saws, the GMM can be fitted with a milling spindle. The IDEA Top 33.16 CNC processing centre is built by the Italian Cobalm company and comes with an electro-welded steel frame with a polyurethane coating to prevent rust, a problem with any machine where water is used in the production cycle. Jonathan Height, Joint Managing Director CDK Stone said “Our exhibit featured interactive displays, live demonstration of machinery and an enormous five-meter wide LED screen featuring products that have cross industry uses.” Jonathan added “CDK Stone is more than just machinery and we were pleased to also display our extensive range of high quality, CNC tools from leading German suppliers.” Farnese is relatively new to Australia and is part of the Proform Company who have been supplying CNC wood working machines for at least sixteen years in Australia. Their presentation at AWISA was the 5-axis TECHNICUT

Bridge Saw with touch screen control and a laser cutting guide. TQ Stone products is also a new company. Based in West Australia and established in 2010. TQ Stone supplies a range of equipment from small hand-operated stone cutting saws right up to CNC Bridge Saws and CNC processing centres. The Wood Tech Group also provides a range of stone processing machinery from Denver, a company based in San Marino (Italy). Their Denver Tecnika Monobloc Bridge Saw on display at AWISA is a bridge saw with an optional ISO40 single spindle for shaped work, and touch-screen control. Intermac is part of the Biesse Group that supplies the Donatoni Jet 625 on display at AWISA. Donatoni has been a Biesse company for several years now, demonstrating the group’s commitment to supplying a broad range of quality Italian stone processing machines to the World. The Jet 625 is a high-output Bridge Saw with five axes with a single milling unit for contours. Also from Intermac is the Montresor LOLA edge polishing machine. While Montresor is a new company of the Biesse Group, it has been producing quality stone processing machines since the late 1960’s. Montresor operates as a joint venture between Intermac and Donatoni with the union as recent as July last year. While these developments are quite recent, all of the companies involved have long and successful histories. The most widely used machine from Intermac is of course the Master series of CNC processing centres and the group has hundreds of machines across Australia. Jonathan Height from CDK Stone said of the stone exhibits at AWISA “Surfaces and interior design is becoming a greater focus at AWISA. CDK Stone was delighted to participate in AWISA and actively promote awareness of the stone industry to the vast amount of trades represented. We aim to help expand knowledge of stone and its many applications.” AWISA has in the past been seen as a wood show but this is changing as the show evolves into what the Australian manufacturer needs. AWISA is now a furniture production show and whatever falls into that arena is well-represented there. www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Biesse Group Success at AWISA 2018 AWISA 2018 took place from 4-7 July 2018, at ICC Sydney, Australia. Biesse Group Australia was the largest exhibitor, with a 1500sqm exhibition space which showcased a complete range of solutions including 21 machines within the wood, stone and advanced materials range. For the first time, the AWISA exhibition exceeded 10,000 visitors, an increase of 16% to the last exhibition. The 10,081 unique visitors consisted of 48% cabinetmakers or kitchen manufactures, and 18% joinery manufacturers. While 60% of visitors were from NSW, we also saw a high number of Victorian (14%) and Queensland (10%) visitors. Well over half of the attendees were Directors, Proprietors or General Managers. This is the first time that Wood, Stone and Advanced Materials machinery were exhibited together at an AWISA exhibition. Biesse Group visitors enjoyed live demonstrations on the range of machinery and software, along with some great Biesse hospitality. On display for the CNC range was the Rover A FT, Rover A Smart, Rover B FT, Rover C, Rover K FT and Rover S FT machines, which offer high productivity and quality standards. Rover K FT is the new Biesse numerical control machining centre with Gantry structure - the most compact on the market - designed to machine panels made from wood and its derivatives. And finally, representing the Biesse Advanced Materials range at AWISA was the Rover Plast J FT, for processing plastic materials, cardboard and composite materials. The numerical control processing centre with gantry structure for nesting operations. Maximum quality and reliability are guaranteed together with a competitive price. Tying all these machines together is Biesse Groups software range. bSuite is a complete suite of advanced software tools, giving users access to cutting edge technology. If software is the only limitation to a machine’s capabilities, then bSuite offers endless possibilities. Biesse showcased SOPHIA for the first time to the Australian market, the new rapidly evolving and substantial artificial intelligence platform. SOPHIA is a digital platform that provides users with access to more machine information and initiates concrete actions to optimise performance and monitor the quality of the work produced, anticipating the causes of faults and providing clear solutions to resolve any anomalies. The data gathered and analysed by artificial intelligence is transformed into useful data to help optimise customer production and product quality, providing extremely valuable opportunities for growth. This information also provides customers with tools to prevent problems that could damage production. Thanks to SOPHIA, Biesse can take proactive steps to contact customers, reducing machine stoppages and inefficient time-wasting.●

Visitors Made the Show at Planit’s Stand During AWISA 2018 AWISA 2018 took place in the newly opened ICC Sydney Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour. Planit Cutting Edge Solutions displayed it’s 6 Brands of Software and technology across 234sqm of floor space, resulting in the largest stand in the company’s history. The hype leading into the show promised something special, and it sure did live up to that hype. All exhibitors put on a show, with larger and more sophisticated stands. Visitor numbers were up 16% on the 2016 show and broke the 10,000 mark for the first time in the show’s history. With more stand space in 2018, Planit were able to feature more of its solutions to customers. With 40 staff and representatives on our stand, our presence was stronger than ever, and we were delighted by the response of visitors who stopped past. Our Demo pods were consistently busy with Demo’s of Cabinet Vision & S2M Center as visitors came to learn more about ways to increase automation in their business. Dave Strickland from Cabinet Vision made the trip to the show, and commented, “There has been a lot of foot traffic and that’s encouraging. It means the market is good, and its growing. From the customer I’ve spoken too, they are happy, they’re looking to grow their business and they want to learn more”. The new features of Version 11 also brought many visitors wanting to see

Whether it be Laser Measuring for benchtops and introducing automation to processes, through to the range of Disto handheld linear laser measurers we had in conjunction with Leica Lasers. As the saying goes, ‘there was something for everyone’ and it was great to meet so many new customers through this part of our stand. Laser Measuring is an emerging aspect of businesses in our industry moving forward. Paul Hansen from ELaser made the trip out and expressed “it’s been fun coming and seeing the excitement and meeting people who are keen to learn more about streamlining processes in their business.” Following the expansion of the AWISA Design area, Planit’s second stand on level 4 was a great addition to the 2018 show. It allowed us to make new connections with a wider audience, as well as showcase our design solutions in a quieter & relaxed atmosphere which visitors appreciated. The engagement of visitors across both our stand is what made Planit’s presence really stand out. It was great to have so many different visitors stopping for a coffee, returning for our 5pm Drinks or event just grabbing a lolly at our reception counter. The activity, excitement and interaction visitors had at both Planit stands gave a real buzz of excitement across all 4 days. Some of the comments from visitors to our stand included: “The Planit stand has been sensational; these guys do a great job”. - Michael Hayler from Cobram Kitchens & Cabinets “The atmosphere and variety basically, it’s a very good show”. - Toby Paton from SIR LANCELOT'S KITCHENS

“The best thing about it is being able to have all my questions answered, meeting people, seeing how everything is…it’s good to see the technology working and on display”. – Domenic Martino from DTech Joinery National Marketing Coordinator Blake Cugley commented, “Planit choose to invest in such a large stand to capture the community aspect of the Planit Stand, allowing for both existing and new businesses to interact with our staff and solutions. Planning for AWISA 2018 started 6 months after AWISA 2016 in Melbourne, with close to 8 months specifically spent ensuring the stand itself provided the functionality we needed we’re ready for the show. We’re proud to be involved in such a first-class event. But as usual, it was our customers that made the show. We want to thank everyone that stopped past either of our two stands.” ● SupplierAug/Sep 2018 | 45

CASE STU DY 1

Luxmy Furniture and Biesse - Trust, Loyalty and Integrity Sudhindra Rao arrived in Australia from Mumbai in 1992 with his wife; two children; four suitcases and a little money to buy a house. They also brought a willingness to work hard; to give something back to their new country. Theirs is an Australian story we can all relate to, a story of risk for reward but also of adventure; moving everything to a new country for the opportunities Australia offered. And they found it in Sydney with the furniture industry and a 20-year partnership with Biesse Australia. Sudhindra prefers to be called Rao; it’s easier for his customers he says. He’s been joined by his daughter Pooja around five years ago and together with a loyal team who have been with the company for up to twenty years; manage Luxmy Furniture in Punchbowl, Sydney. Luxmy is derived from Lakshmi; the Indian Goddess of wealth, abundance and prosperity. She is often depicted with four hands representing the four goals of Hindu human life. Pooja explains “We’re not about just making money; we’re building a culture of quality and happiness here. We re-invest our money in people and technology to make our workplace better and more productive.” It’s been quite a journey since they first arrived in Australia some twenty-five

46 | SupplierAug/Sep 2018

years ago but it didn’t take Rao long to get started. An electronics engineer in India, he’d had his own businesses there including an electroplating plant. He brought his manufacturing and management expertise to his work in Australia. Starting out here in a recession, he took on labouring work but soon got a job managing a powder coating company. Making this company profitable with modern manufacturing principles, he was quickly made General Manager. Rao quickly realised that he could operate a powder coating business himself so he went out on his own. Many of his customers at the time were furniture companies and there was a big demand for powder coated frames. One particular customer was Herman Miller. Their furniture was then only made in Michigan in the USA and the lead time for table tops was too long. They suggested to Rao that he could make the tops in Australia and so another business opportunity opened up. Rao recalls “Our powder coating business was doing well but it was still a risk.” He bought a Laminex factory in Sutherland for a peppercorn payment and every Thursday, went to Herman Miller for training. “There was a lot of pressure to be successful early,” Pooja said. “We bought the factory with a

Biesse machine already there and this was the start of our long partnership with them.” Luxmy produces table systems; chairs; lounges; office screens; ottomans; commercial furniture and joinery and will co-operate with interior designers to produce original designs. Their customers are commercial clients who may not have manufacturing facilities of their own or who may not be able to produce certain designs. Rao says “We are not direct to the market; we’re an independent furniture manufacturer and we manufacture for the corporate market only.” Pooja adds, “We’ve tried to make our business model as simple as possible and cut out many of the overheads. We don’t employ engineers so Biesse has to work for us. When you have a partner that looks after you, everything is simpler. Biesse listen to what we want and customise their machines accordingly; their Worldwide experience is very important to us.” Creative Director Simon Murgatroyd said “Our Biesse’s are the beating heart of the company; they feed the factory. We make tops for all the major commercial players; the icons of Australian commerce. Most of our work is customised by the consumer. Our machinery needs to be flexible and

www.suppliermagazine.com.au

reliable and over twenty years they’ve never let us down.” Pooja adds “Our Biesse machines are extremely agile; our client’s demands are changing so we must change as well. Small orders are more common these days and we have to make it easy to meet the clients lead time. The Biesse machines allow us to meet all the challenges our customers throw at us.” “We work very closely with designers,” Pooja explains. Rao recalls “One of my first jobs in Australia was making belt buckles. I went round to the fashion houses where I met many young Australian designers like Lisa Ho. I learnt that design was an important part of manufacturing.” While some Australian companies are obsessed with overseas designers, at Luxmy they support local talent. Pooja says, “Designer product takes twelve weeks to come from Italy; eight weeks from China but less than five weeks from us. Designers spend a lot of time with the product design and often don’t leave enough for manufacturing. That’s where we have to be flexible and fast. We collaborate with our clients as early as possible to help them realise their designs to a practical solution. We’re partners more than suppliers and we look at Biesse exactly the same way; Biesse are true partners and treat us like we treat our own clients.” Over the years Luxmy have added a number of Biesse machines and now run two beam saws; two edge banders and five CNC routers including a five axis machine with on-board edge banding. Biesse provide Luxmy with the capacity to apply edges with highperformance PUR glue that leaves a perfect edge with an almost invisible glue line. Quality is a high priority but performance of a commercial product is also extremely important. Pooja says “Biesse understand our business; they talk to us and supply us with the machines we need to do our job properly.” Rao adds “Every five to seven years technology takes another step so that’s when we look to upgrade our machines. I can tell you that our five-axis Biesse has changed the direction of our business and opened up markets for new products.” www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Luxmy sees themselves as the industry’s manufacturer and work like a retailer’s factory if they had one. They supply top to middle of the market and are pleased to say that much of Sydney’s CBD would have their furniture. They produce furniture for universities; banks; government and commercial projects and are green star; eco-sustainable; ISO14001 certified and have an AFS chain of custody (forest) certification. “Our investments are in our employees and in our Biesse machinery. Biesse work with us; they understand what we do and how we work, they understand what’s important to us. Over the last six years or so the commercial office structure has changed. We used to make lots of workstations but office work is different now. It’s all about ‘hot desking’ and agile workspaces and we’ve had to change how we do business” said Pooja. “We make everything to architectural specifications; even one-off product. It’s a credit to Biesse that they’ve seen our manufacture change from mass production to niche customisation and have adapted their machines to suit our needs,” she says. Rao tells us “Our Biesse machines haven’t reduced our staff levels; it’s not what we were looking for. They

have lifted our production capacity and added to our flexibility and our ability to do complex work. The Biesse also replicates traditional handcrafts consistently; we don’t see this as losing skills but allowing our trained employees to do higher level skilled work using the high-end capabilities of the Biesse product. The machines have led to job security.” Pooja adds “Twenty years ago we just cut up board but now we’re product-focussed thanks to our Biesse machines.” Rao adds, “It’s a cliché, but we are able to work at the ‘cuttingedge’ with Biesse.” Back in 1992 Rao looked at the US; Canada and Australia to settle his family. As he puts it “In Australia the systems are very similar to India; there’s the warm climate; you drive on the same side of the road and you also play cricket so for us Australia was very attractive.” The Americas’ loss is Australia’s gain and Rao went on to create a real Australian story with Luxmy Furniture. The story isn’t over just yet as Rao and Pooja move forward to continue a brand built on close communication; trust; loyalty and integrity; a brand built on people and technology; technology provided by their trusted 20-year Biesse partner.●

CASE STU DY 2

A Nesting Case Study Philip Ashley reports It’s not news that in Australia; the nesting of cabinet parts on CNC machines is practiced by a very high percentage of firms. Some say this figure is well over ninety percent. Obviously this puts those companies in direct competition with over ninety percent of the rest of the industry where the costs and production is the same as everyone else’s. Ask any business consultant and they will tell you that this is not the best position to be in. They will tell you that specialisation; where you can charge a premium for services others cannot provide, is a better solution. However; as the manufacture of cabinets for kitchens; bathrooms and laundries and even living areas is a high proportion of the overall furniture industry, many manufacturers find themselves manufacturing to the lowest possible production cost and nesting provides just that. Unfortunately this often translates to low profits, especially when other businesses in your local area produce exactly the way you do…and you end up selling on price. And so if you are a nesting company, it’s always a good idea to be on top of the game and the experience gained by other businesses that work the way you do could help. The following case study was first published in the German publication HOB Holzbearbeitung

December 2017 with the kind permission of Dr. Michael Hobohm and provided as a press release by the Leitz Group at Holz Handwerk this year. It looks at the Mayer Wood Products company located in Bad Säckingen, Germany and in particular; the machines and tools they use to process cabinet parts. Mayer started as a one-man-operation in 1993 and today has eleven employees. It’s a business similar in many respects to thousands of Australian companies and faces the same issues. The company has until 2016 produced with a beam saw but recently invested in some new machinery including a Holz-Her CNC nesting machine and a Biesse ‘Skipper’ vertical CNC drilling machine. They also made an investment in Leitz diamond tools. At Mayer Wood Products the purchase of new equipment became necessary because their panel saw had reached its production limits. The company was also looking to launch into a net-based business with online trading, initially cutting boards into components with and without edging. Managing Director Berthold Mayer says “Later, ready-made furniture will be added.” As their equipment and expertise grew, so did their range of customers. They service one-person

operators who mostly just assemble and install kitchens. They produce for small operators who don’t have the range of equipment Mayer has; and they also cater for larger companies who have to outsource overcapacities. Mayer now also produces sports equipment, a profitable specialisation only possible due to their range of equipment. The question of sawing or nesting is one that Mayer has also faced. They decided that to have both methods of production was the best option. They could have gone for an extra beam saw but decided not to because it is easier to automate the nesting process, something that Australian producers agree with. They also face the issue of not having the skilled people they used to and the nesting process solves that problem as well. They try and nest as much as possible but cut smaller parts on the beam saw. When choosing whether or not to cut a job on the beam saw or nest it on the Holz-Her CNC; they consider the choice of panel size and processing accuracy, as well as the type of material and the degree of utilization of the machines. On the nesting machine they cut ninety percent of their work but do all of their drilling on the Biesse Skipper vertical CNC and this is due to errors brought about by unskilled workers.

“Leitz tools are used on all of our machines", reports Mayer. “It begins with the panel saw, where diamond sawblades and scorers are used to cut; and continues with the Diamaster Pro3 Z3+3 nesting cutter and the Diamaster Pro Z2+2 back wall groover on the Holz-Her CNC and the ‘Whispercut’ cutters on the edge-banding machine. Diamond tools were highly recommended by a Swiss colleague who really fancied the tool life, feed speed and processing quality. Today, the Pro3 Z3+3 cutter nests in diameters of 12mm and 14mm. Leitz currently is the only manufacturer who offers variants from a diameter of 10mm. This makes smaller inner radii possible, e.g. when cutting moulded parts. In addition, reduced tool diameters result in fewer chips and lower vacuum loss which means that the workpieces are held better and thus have less tendency to move on the spoil board. The cutters are clamped with HSK 63 shrink-fit chucks and remain in the

chuck for the life of the tool, even for sharpening. This is done to maintain the precision from the initial carefullycontrolled setting of the tool. Three or four sets of tools are kept so that production never stops and duplicate tools are also kept in the CNC tool magazine. Mayer advises “High feed rates are a must for the router cutter in order to avoid excessive heat builtup. Our recommendations are in the range of 20 to 27m/min. With a standard material mix, this achieves a tool life of well more than 25,000 running metres.” According to Leitz, up to 40,000 running metres is not out of the question. Thanks to the spiralshaped cutting edge arrangement, at least three cutting edges always reach over the entire working length. The PCD-tipped tools achieve higher feed speeds and longer performance times, and with irregular pitch run smoother than conventional shank cutters. Mayer have answered many of the production questions and are

now ready to go to the next level; lucrative online trading. It is there that high quality and high output can be guaranteed with the right machinery and the right cutting tools.●

Blum hinge for thin doors

Hardware Giants on Show Phil Ashley reports Blum expands its extensive hinge program at HolzHandwerk with new hinges for individual furniture ideas. Furniture with thin fronts is the latest trend and from February 2018, new hinges with the integrated Blumotion dampening make special furniture possible; whether its cupboards, furniture with thin fronts of 8mm to 14mm, or glass and mirror cabinets. As chipboard, HPL or ceramic in impressively thin versions from just 8 mm are currently very popular. Blum has now developed a suitable solution for this design trend; the innovative Expando T fastening system. The innovative fastening system ensures a comfortable installation and comes with a very small drilling depth of only 6 mm. For both hinges, standard mounting plates can be used in the usual position. Thus, no adjustment of the body is necessary. All common cabinet side thicknesses can be covered cleanly thanks to a front impact of 19 mm. The new hinges are also available in onyx black for even more 50 | SupplierAug/Sep 2018

individuality in furniture design. The Austrian fittings specialist Blum supports a multitude of furniture trends and design ideas with its 4 movement technologies Blumotion, Servo Drive, Tip-On Blumotion and Tip-On. Tip-On Blumotion, Blum's latest motion technology, combines mechanical opening support with the proven Blumotion function. Even more comfort is provided by Servo-Drive, the electric movement support from Blum. Exceptional fronts? No problem, especially glass or mirror fronts, but also fronts made of extraordinary materials. For glass and mirror fronts, it is called Clip top Blumotion Cristallo, now with integrated Blumotion cushioning. The special feature: The pot plate is glued on, in glass showcases also the associated mounting plate. At Holz-Handwerk, GRASS showcased what was new at interzum 2017. Tiomos H is the new system of ‘invisible’ hinges which

are recessed in the top and base of the cabinet, thereby making cup hinges, mounting plates and serial drilling unnecessary. This innovative form of installation means that the movement system is less prominent compared to the furniture design and particularly impressive in the case of display cabinets compared to the content presented in the cabinet. GRASS also showed their Vionaro iD where a combination of the basic drawer side with a choice of design add-ons creates a flexible system with unlimited design options. "More individuality is hardly possible", says Thomas Müller, Managing Director at GRASS. Other very interesting products were the Tavinea Sorto interior accessory system and the new Tipmatic Soft-close system. Häfele presented their PurePlasma fans for uncompromisingly clean air. The PurePlasma fan is different than any other currently available so-called plasma filters on the market because it generates free

atmospheric low pressure plasma, safely and without measurable emissions. All this creates far greater efficiency than conventional exhaust and recirculation systems. The air cleans itself with the open system in the entire room itself. The system is maintenance free and economical in energy consumption with only a fine dust filter that can be simply vacuumed off. Also from Häfele comes the multifunctional Häfele bathroom mirror that combines the themes of make-up light, room lighting, mood lighting, mirror heating and sound system in a high-quality product. The headlight is adjustable from cold to warm white, dimmed to daylight with a memory function for different users. While the sound system is operated via Bluetooth with a smartphone or tablet, the user controls the light settings and the mirror heater via back-lit tip-on switches integrated in the mirror front. And to round off only a few of Häfele’s innovations is the Easy Storage racking system, Grass Tiomos hidden hinge

developed for simple and individual planning and ordering, for easy transport and quick set-up with no tools needed. The Häfele Easy Storage was developed for people who collect shoes; others who sort T-shirts by colour or equip their closet according to seasons. From Hettich was the ‘Push to open Silent’ drawer opening system with numerous new features added to the second product generation. As a result, Push to open Silent provides the same convenience as electromechanical opening systems. Drawers open entirely mechanically in

response to a light press on the front panel. On shutting; they un-noticeably load the opening mechanism and close in a gently cushioned movement. Even small; lightweight drawers that up until now lacked momentum, close reliably and gently. Using special runners and Push to open Silent units, Hettich has managed to develop an end to end solution for all drawer formats. In the hinge segment, Hettich’s new Sensys hinge in obsidian black retreats into the background on dark materials, remaining conspicuously inconspicuous.

Hettich design

The range provides a key to upgrading into the luxury segment and gives manufacturers new distinguishing options. Hettich's new designer profiles for ArciTech and InnoTech Atira drawers provide a particularly effective way of individualising furniture for those wanting to stand out from the crowd. The decorative, self-adhesive designer profiles in attractive finishes create visual highlights with an individual

touch: timeless stainless steel, chrome or aluminium looks give the drawer a particular aura of elegance and quality. Oak and walnut looks pick up on the trend towards more natural authenticity. Here, the combinations are equally as varied as consumer demands and expectations. Whether in the living room, bedroom, kitchen or contract segment, the high-quality mix of different materials and decorative designer profiles makes an impressive statement.●

In Australia, manufacturers know IMA for their CNC processing machines and edge banders. IMA supplies many of the World’s largest kitchen manufacturers and is a brand recognised for their high-performing machines. While they aren’t too keen on you taking photos of their product, they do offer some service to journalists and we’re able to report on several new(ish) innovations. IMALUX is IMA’s direct laser system for seamless edge banding in small shops. It’s not laser and it’s not hot air; it’s an LED system to apply ‘laser’ edge tape. It’s robust, requires little maintenance and allows for a high feed speed as well as a small tape feed angle and small minimum tape length. The calculation of the necessary ‘laser’ power is effected automatically and the new IMALUX direct laser system is reported to be very energyefficient. IMA also has a new edge-bander glue applicator

IMA Kaeser i-comp

that provides an extended cleaning interval when PUR glues are used and improves the handling of the applicator in the cleaning process. Finally, IMA has developed a new 5-axis robot head with cardan joint bearing for their CNC machines. The maximum spindle tilt angle is -10° and the C-axis can be rotated through ± 370°. At the Holz-Handwerk trade fair Kaeser Kompressoren released the i.Comp; the new, mobile innovation that delivers a powerful compressed

air supply that’s ideal for woodworking and carpentry. Providing exceptional flexibility, this portable infinitely variable speedcontrolled reciprocating compressor delivers a dependable supply of oil-free compressed air wherever you are. This means no oil-laden condensate, no oil changes and no oil checks. This workshop compressor is suitable for continuous use and delivers outstanding efficiency thanks to its variable speed motor – with no need for an air receiver. www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Even at cable lengths of 150 metres, the i.Comp starts up easily to deliver constant pressure of up to 11 bar; with absolute operational reliability. From Schugoma comes a new table machine for applying the ‘hot-air’ or ‘laser’ edge tapes for a seamless edge banded join. The application possibilities of the Hot-Air System are now not limited to new through-feed machine systems or retrofitting on edge

banding machines. With the new TMS1810 table machine, the workstations can be flexibly selected, but also additional work processes in connection with existing edge banding machines can be realised. The Schugoma table machine also impresses with its absolute novelty, the swivelling device for edging on inclined edge surfaces. Here, the co-extruded or pre-coated edge-tapes can be attached to a pre-milled

Schugoma table machine

edge surface on customer requirements from 0 to 48 degrees. The swivelling device is adjusted manually via a hand-wheel. The revised and improved

hot-air unit has impressed many customers since its first deliveries in 2017 with improved performance, significantly lower air and energy consumption. ●

Pedini - the Kitchen Tailor Phil Ashley reports Architect and Pedini product designer Alfredo Zengiaro said “The secret of good design is in the coincidence of aesthetics and industrial standards brought to the production and commercialisation of a product.” And so it is that Pedini Kitchens in Italy is able to enrich the relationship between trends, function and lifestyle, adding their commitment to quality, unlimited customisation and deep respect for the environment to create a product that is sought after by discerning buyers from around the World, including Australia. Pedini is a historic Italian company with its roots firmly planted in the soil of Lucrezia in the beautiful Marche region of central Italy. This is an area where the furniture and cabinet industries flourish and is also the region where some of the World’s best wood working machinery is built. To satisfy their needs www.suppliermagazine.com.au

for equipment that is able to produce a high quality product at high feed rates but also flexible enough to meet their standards of design, variation and customisation; Pedini turned to Biesse. The result is a marriage of leading design; industrial best practice; and a commitment not only to their many loyal customers but to

future generations. Pedini does not compromise and use ecological panels made of 100% post-consumption recycled wood. Not a single tree is felled to make a Pedini kitchen. Every kitchen is made entirely in Italy with the exception of some imported hardware or some appliances specified by the consumer. Pedini is

FSC certified and follows environmentally friendly manufacturing practices. They make good choices to look after the environment and use solar energy generated from their own solar energy system. These are the ethics customers consider when buying a kitchen valued in some cases at six figures.

But Pedini is not all about high-end quality. The company is equally skilled in the manufacture of mass-produced kitchens at a competitive price. Their astute selection of machinery from Biesse ensures their production is flexible enough to accommodate various designs, hardware and construction elements without compromising quality. Three years ago Pedini focused on big international builders and started to include

other cabinetry for bathrooms and living spaces in both residential and commercial projects. Pedini understands the relationship between trends, function and lifestyle and integrates kitchen and other furniture elements to create living spaces that are dependable, dynamic and uplifting. Pedini’s equipment choice was selected for maximum flexibility to handle the infinite range of materials

and hardware elements to provide their customers with unlimited design choices. The ability to deliver a high quality, scratch-free product on a ‘just-in-time’ production schedule was critical in their choice of Biesse as a production partner. Their equipment includes an automated storage and retrieval system working to deliver the correct parts to the processing machines on demand and to specific

customer requirements. A single sided edge banding machine produces edged panels almost like a doublesided squaring machine. The high-capacity production line features an automatic handling system for greatest flexibility for the boring and inserting of hardware. A Kuka robot handles the cabinet parts seamlessly and keeps the huge range of parts moving swiftly through the production. Finally, a

vertical drilling, profiling and hardware insertion machine with batch size one production allows Pedini to work on the most delicate and expensive panel doors without fear of scratches or damage. The first Pedini kitchen was designed and produced in 1957 with the awareness that Pedini had established its own flair by using freeflowing curved lines and creating different working and living zones within the kitchen. One of the first kitchen manufacturers to use a modular cabinet system; Pedini is highly proficient in producing kitchens for any space and design using sophisticated materials and machinery. In 1992 Daniele Radi led Pedini to the next level; modernising the company to create one of the most flexible production facilities, able to produce high-end quality on small and large orders. Current production manager Emanuele Renzoni works closely with Biesse to realise the factory design he says is “Special and fits the challenging needs of the company.” All Pedini products are internationally certified to the highest standards. 70% of Pedini kitchens are exported to over 45 countries and this trend is growing. The success in the export market where Pedini has to accommodate different regulations that exist www.suppliermagazine.com.au

in each country is evidence to Pedini’s position as a premier kitchen manufacturer worldwide. Export manager Fabio Pavoni says “Our kitchens build emotion, a place to share with family and friends but not all people have the same needs. Our ergonomic products can be built to satisfy short and tall people or people with special needs. Good design is always functional design.” Through evolution; the Italian Pedini brand represents the soul of the best Italian design, technology, innovation and quality. The reorganisation of the company has resulted in new importance being given to production techniques and equipment; fresh and creative designs; carefully managed supply chains that synchronise the flow of

many elements to create the whole, and the use of only the highest quality certified materials. During the last sixty years Pedini has developed an exceptional understanding of modern kitchen design and manufacturing philosophy. Best practice is combined with state of the art Biesse technology and machinery to produce a first class product that sets World standards. The future is assured by building on the design achievements of the past to bring the Pedini brand to an international market. Pedini’s leading designers breathe Italian history and culture. Alfredo Zengiaro says “Every purchase made by the consumer begins with the creation of an aesthetic and emotional relationship with the product.” Pedini is able to create that emotion with ‘warm designs’ inspired by organic influences and modern architecture, resulting in Pedini’s timeless linear and trademark elegant curved creations. Think Armani; Bulgari; Gucci or Prada. Italian design is World renowned for its chic, beauty and functionality.

Pedini recognise and lead the trend for kitchens to become completely integrated into the household as a piece of furniture. Through leading designers like Alfredo Zengiaro, Pedini kitchens, bathrooms and furniture contain all of the features of a truly modern, personalised living space. In fact; Pedini is listed amongst the top ten quality kitchen producers in Europe; not just Italy. A careful study by Pedini of modern kitchens focused on ergonomics and lifestyle has resulted in kitchens that have optimal storage and food preparation solutions, attracting customers such as Sir Elton John and former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone. Pedini’s practical knowhow and Biesse’s technical expertise allows Pedini to manufacture not just kitchen, bathroom or living room furniture but to fit the unique lifestyle of their customers. Managing Director Simone Gennari says “We are not selling a kitchen; we are selling a service, a quality of life and in this sense Pedini truly are the Italian kitchen tailors.” ●

particularly to Panel Tools Online whose ethos is “never settle for mediocrity and business acumen is critical”. The immediacy and up-to-date philosophy of this company is crucial, according to Craig and his team, and so is the development of social media and “interaction”. Interacting with the industry and customers is the company’s main focus these days and delivering top-notch customer service and ultimately providing the best tooling solution for the ever-evolving industry. I couldn’t count the amount of times that Craig and his team used the word “communication”, as we all know this is key to the success of any business, and it is clear that Panel Tools Online are on a very clear and successful path due to pitch-perfect communication and understanding the pain points in the industry. Adapting to this new and everchanging market is the focus right now for Craig, Fraser and Jarryd, and providing “immediate” service to their customers is paramount. With an extensive range of panel tools, including router bits and cutters, collets, chucks, saw blades, boring bits, turn over knives and much more, Craig Honeyman and his team at Panel Tools Online are very busy these days to say the least. If the reception to their launch at AWISA 2018 was anything to go by, there is a thirst in the industry for something new. Craig took time out to introduce his team when I visited him at AWISA in July, including young prodigy and cofounder, Fraser Killen, and Marketing Manager Jarryd Biddle, who were all busy demonstrating what Panel Tools are all about to new customers who swamped the very-impressive stand.
