Engineered stone countertops Article by Scott Lewis
L
aminate is fading, and now granite is coming under pressure from a manufactured alternative. Recent forecasts indicate the engineered quartz countertops market is expected to grow because of the availability of a larger variety of designs and colours and increasing applications in kitchens. Currently the kitchen and bathroom countertop market is largely defined by the struggle between two popular materials: natural granite, and manufactured stone produced using the Breton patent processes. This latter material is known by a number of alternate names, including engineered stone, Bretonstone, and, in the European Union, agglomerated stone. Perhaps the most accurate name, however, would be engineered quartz, which we will abbreviate to EQ.
Proponents of the EQ product, such as the listed Israeli/US company Caesarstone, believe that granite has reached its peak, and that EQ will take further market share from natural stone over the coming two to three years. The main reason for the ongoing success of EQ is that, while originally it attempted to emulate granite, in more recent years it has branched out into a wide range of different surface looks. As the kitchen market has itself diversified in terms of design, it’s come to serve the needs of more adventurous families. Already there are signs that granite prices are slipping, as demand tails off in key markets. While EQ is available at a lower price than granite, both surfaces can easily triple their cheapest price when it comes to buying specific finishes.
Granite In some ways, the future of EQ is closely tied up with granite so it is best to take a close look at the granite market to better understand the potential of EQ. Granite has all the benefits of a hard, durable quarried stone surface. It can be polished to a reflective surface, or, in some rare cases, left as a less-reflective, honed surface. The natural beauty of imperfections, and variations in colour are found to be highly attractive to many, while others, seeking a closely controlled kitchen look, find them a little difficult to work with. Granite is a porous rock, which means that for kitchen use it must be sealed and retreated every two to three years. Granite is also a very heavy material, and requires special handling for installation,

as well as a substantial substructure to support it. Attempts have been made recently to develop forms of granite veneer, which provide a 12mm thick surface over a suitable substrate, such as an existing laminate countertop. Some companies have taken this one step further, and provide complete systems, with the granite veneer pre-installed on a new, lightweight substrate. Engineered quartz In contrast to granite, which is an entirely natural product, EQ is man-made, using a majority of natural products. The actual composition of EQ varies according to the manufacturer and the style selected.
Above: Today, the Breton PARAGON multi-wire machines are ideal for cutting granite and marble blocks with diamond wires of 5.3mm in diameter.
In general terms, EQ consists of between 10% and 5% binder, which is either a plastic (polymeric) resin, or — a relatively recent development — a type of cement. The remainder is composed of various stone aggregates. These can include quartz, marble, natural stone, as well as recycled industrial materials, such as glass, mirrors, silica and ceramic.
While quartz dominates as the key aggregate for kitchen countertops, in bathrooms marble is more common. Marble does produce a glossier depth to the material; however, it is also softer and more permeable, making it much less suitable for kitchens.
From the consumer’s perspective, the two main characteristics of EQ is that it is available in an ever-expanding array of colours, and that its surfaces — unlike quartz — are perfect in the sense they do not have any natural variations. In terms of durability, while granite can withstand higher heat than EQ without ill effect, it is very rare that EQ will get exposed to sufficiently high heat to cause the surface to blister. In the event that such blistering does occur, the surface can generally be repaired through sanding and refinishing. Manufacturing EQ Quartz itself is a very common stone worldwide. Marble-based products are typically made in blocks which need to be cut to size, but quartz-based products are produced to finished thickness in slabs.
Above: Granite slabs ready to be made into countertops.. Supplier August/September 2021
To begin the process of making EQ, the quartz is first mined, then crushed to create a uniform size. It is mixed with a binding agent, and other substances, including colour pigments. In modern factories, the mix is then poured between two sheets of paper, with the quantity needed to produce the required thickness.

The conveyor belt then transports the material to the compression area. This uses a vibrocompression vacuum chamber where the material is compressed into a solid slab, and all air is removed. This process is the core, patented part of the manufacture. It effectively compresses the particles to the extent that the porousness of the finished product is greatly reduced. From there the material travels to a curing chamber, which is typically a tower-like structure, with a number of heating trays, which are kept at a temperature of between 80 to 85 degrees Celsius. It takes a less than 40 minutes of curing for the material to solidify into the finished slab of EQ. Final processing can include surface smoothing, calibrating, polishing, trimming, bevelling and edge work, depending on what the EQ will be used for. Larger plants are capable of producing around 30,000 square metres of EQ a month.
History of EQ Virtually all EQ in the world is made based on patents perfected by a single company in Italy during the 1960s and the 1970s. The company was originally named Brevetti Toncelli, later shortened to Bre-Ton and then to “Breton” as it is today. It was established in 1963 at Castello di Godego in the province of Treviso, Italy by Marcello Toncelli. The name is a combination of the first syllable of his last name “ton”, plus an abbreviation of “brevetti”, which in English is “patent”.
Originally Bretonstone, as the product is known, was made of blocks of polyester resin and limestone. These materials which were hand-poured into 30cm by 50cm formworks, to then be cut into tiles. Today consumers think of EQ solely in terms of kitchen counters. However, the majority of EQ is slabbed out in massive sizes for use in shopping malls, airports, and high applications such as the floors of Prada fashion boutiques. One of the core problems that early production processes had to resolve was the presence of small air bubbles that were trapped in the resin binder. These made the end product porous, and thus subject to the absorption of moisture — not what you want in a floor or a kitchen countertop. This was when Toncelli set about developing his patented vacuum process. Company legend has it that the first version of a vacuum chamber was a simple domestic hot water bottle.
Above: Caesarstone Vanilla Noir is used on the kitchen benchtop of the River Shack renovation by Three Birds Renovations.
Supplier August/September 2021
A second problem was that as slabs of EQ grew larger, they had a tendency to curve as they cured. The solution to this, it turned out, was to use much less binding resin their production. Toncelli achieved this through the use of vibration, which help established a closely compacted aggregate mix, which would then need a minimum of resin to bind.
www.suppliermagazine.com.au
Discovering Stone
The result of these developments was a manufacturing plant that could produce a slab 125cm by 125cm in size. Versions of this plant were sold to companies in Italy, Tunisia, Venezuela, Singapore and Spain. One plant was also sold to Armstrong Flooring in the US. Success was limited both by concerns over using the unknown material, and the fact that it did not, at first, have the same robust qualities that granite did, being somewhat more like marble in terms of durability and maintenance. The answer was to move to using much harder siliceous aggregates, such as quartz, as a foundation material. By 1982, the company had made and sold in Italy a manufacturing plant that could produce this type of material. It gradually took over the entire market for Bretonstone. The company also sold a plant to a Welsh manufacturer, which began to experiment with harder substances, based on the silica family of stones (such as quartz and some sands). The next advance came in the size of slabs that could be produced. It was Caesarstone
that bought the first Breton plant using new technology for the production of large 125cm by 308 cm slabs. While the plant began producing using marble aggregate, it was soon converted to using quartz instead, borrowing from the developments of the Welsh plant. Breton has continued to improve the size of slabs of Bretonstone that can be made, with the width increasing from 125cm to 144cm and then 166 cm. Today’s plants can produce “jumbo” slabs at 212cm by 367cm. Manufacturers There are over 50 manufacturers of EQ licensing the Bretonstone process from Breton. In the US one of the most significant is Cambria, which distributes solely in North America. Its product can only be purchased through professional services such as kitchen and bath installers, or sourced by builders, architects and designers. While Caesarstone is a major supplier to the Australian market, there is also a wide range of competitors. These include Silestone, which
16
is made in Spain by Cosentino, Essastone which is distributed by Laminex (better known for laminate kitchen surfaces), and SmartStone, which is part of Halifax Vogel Group, a privately owned Australian company that imports and distributes a diverse product range throughout Australia. DuPont also distributes its Zodiaq range of EQ. Future While manufacturers and distributors of EQ are quietly confident they will see market share continue to expand, much of that confidence is based on a continuation of current housing trends, which are dependent on a range of economic factors, including low interest rates on mortgages and other loans, and appreciation of house prices. The move, in Australia, to smaller, less expensive residences in multi-dwelling buildings could see the market shift in the future towards simpler, and more affordable alternatives, such as solid surfaces. It is also worth noting that solid surfaces, such as DuPont’s Corian, are much easier to install on a DIY basis, as common power tools can be used to cut and finish these countertops. Such a change would, however, likely further secure EQ’s market share versus granite, as EQ is capable of going lower in price than granite. The move towards Caesarstone’s Transform product is one example of an EQ manufacturer creating a new channel for less expensive, and faster renovations in the future. ❚

Strategic machine solutions boost efficiency in the stone sector
S
trategic machinery acquisitions can make or break a business. The key to making it is rarely about the technology itself, rather, it lies in working with experts that do what it takes to secure the right solutions, saving time, money, and removing responsibility from workers.
Working closely with Managing Director Pierre Sullivan, Craig’s 20 plus years in the glass and stone processing industry is a valuable asset. Adelaide’s forward-thinking Ideal Stone has partnered with both experts for almost a decade, an arrangement that has proven fruitful.
“If someone asks me what’s the machine for me, I go and do analysis and show them options so that they can compare. I’m not just comparing what we originally spoke about versus what we have to offer. I look at every solution, analyse production, efficiency, and cost, then offer the best solutions to the customer.” says Craig Haidley, Stone and Glass expert for Sydney-based machinery and service hub, Innovync.
Over the years, two CMS Brembana Idroline Waterjet machines and two CMS Brembana Speed CNC Machining centres have facilitated drastic productivity and quality increases for the firm, which creates custom stone products for clients. With Craig’s help, a strategic new acquisition was recently installed, setting the stage for even greater ROI on their investments.
H2: High-output machinery is worth paying for CMS’ Brembana Speed TR, a Stone machining centre fitted with a rotating table, is an in-demand machine. Along with the Twin Table Easyline, Multihead Machine project and new Formax Dual (named after its dual palette system, which offers an impressive 70% productivity increase), it’s one of the most advanced stone machines to have emerged from CMS's Italian factory. What’s more, the Speed TR’s capabilities can be stretched even further through customisation - a bonus that ACT-based Pacific Stone immediately took advantage of.

Above: Ideal Stone's Speed TR’s rotating tables allow for an efficiency boost of 40% “The new Speed TR, it’s probably one of the most advanced four axes in stone. We might have gone overboard...it’s got a rotating table, a 30kw electro spindle that’s got twice the power of a traditional Stone CNC and tool racks with 83 tool positions.” says Daniel Zovko, the firm’s Director. With Innovync’s help, multiple tool racks were fitted onto the Speed TR; several in the rear, and the other, a very clever design of 3 x 8 position tool racks fitted just under the
bridge of the machine, reducing back-andforth motion between the cutting table and the rear rack. Besides a 40% output increase generated by the rotating table, Pacific Stone enjoys optimisation in almost every aspect; right down to the glycogen-cooled vacuum pumps and laser projector for positioning of the suction cups. Sealant solutions for natural stone
Sealers Guide
Article by Joe Simpson Joe Simpson writes that with the correct selection of cleaning and maintenance products, caring for natural stone or tiled surfaces should be relatively straightforward. It will extend the life and preserve the value of the investment in these beautiful surfaces. Enormous care goes into the manufacture and supply of natural stone, porcelain, and ceramic tile. Their individual aesthetics and formats are carefully engineered, along with their performance characteristics. However, when it comes to maintenance, these hugely varied materials are all too often viewed collectively as “tiles” … and treated in the same way. This is a fundamental mistake. The care and maintenance regimes for man-made ceramic and porcelain surfaces – including sintered stone; conglomerates such a quartz solid surfacing; and each and every family of natural stone should be created individually. In terms of the actual regime, they may follow similar paths, starting with the vitally important initial clean; but the products used in each case should be specific to the material being cleaned and, if necessary, sealed. First step An initial post-installation clean, often referred to as a builder’s clean, is the vital first step in any effective maintenance regime. It will remove manufacturing debris and installation dirt, including any excess grout and adhesive.
Supplier August/September 2021
www.suppliermagazine.com.au
Feature
This very important step should always be carried out before any sealer is applied. If you try to apply a sealer onto a dirty surface, it will not be properly absorbed. This will affect the performance of the sealer, and the overall surface aesthetic. What’s more, subsequent on-going maintenance will be more difficult.
Sealers generally fall into two basic categories: topical sealers and impregnating sealers. Impregnating sealers line the pores of natural stone, allowing the stone to breathe, while maintaining the natural stone’s strength. Impregnating sealers have a natural look and provide a barrier against oils and other liquid contaminants.
To ensure that the correct cleaning product is used, it is vital to determine the acid sensitivity of the natural stone or other surface finish. If the surface isn’t acid sensitive, and if you have to use an acid detergent, it is generally good practice to choose a safe buffered acid-based cleaner, rather than a muriatic acid-based alternative.
Some manufacturers have taken this impregnation technology a step further; using nano particles to create sealers that penetrate deeply into the treated material, providing what is billed as invisible, longlasting protection.
Muriatic acid releases fumes that can harm both humans and the environment. They can also cause substantial damage to stainless steel and aluminium profiles. Buffered acids, on the other hand, do not emit fumes or cause erosion. Certain materials, including polished marble, limestone and travertine, will not withstand an acid wash, and a pH-neutral or alkaline product should always be used. Alkaline products are effective at removing organic dirt and polymers from grouts and adhesives, but they are not suitable for polished stone tiles. A safe selection, in all cases, is a pH-neutral cleaner. A concentrated product is a great option as it can be used at various dilutions to cater for most cleaning needs. Once the stone tiles have been thoroughly cleaned, the surface is then ready to be sealed. Prevent, don’t cure The fundamental maxim is that the best way to prevent stains on natural stone, or indeed, any porous hard surface, is to treat it with a protective sealer. Sealers can repel spills on the surface, causing them to bead so that they can be wiped away before they have a chance to penetrate the stone.
Supplier August/September 2021
Topical sealers, on the other hand, are hard-wearing surface sealers that provide a physical barrier, protecting natural stone or other surfaces from normal wear and tear. These sealers can have either a gloss or a matt finish. They can make the sealed area slippery when wet, and so anti-slip agents can be added, if required, to counteract this effect. Some sealers can enhance (darken) natural stone, while others retain the stone’s natural hue. As a result, different stone types may require different grades of sealer, depending on the intended use, and the desired aesthetic. Most natural stone and tile grout are cement-based, and porous. Because of this, sealant companies recommend sealing cement-based grout joints as soon as possible after installation to provide protection against water- and oil-based stains Selection and application Most natural stone surfaces will need to be sealed, to protect them from water, oil, and other contaminants. Some very porous stone surfaces may even need to be sealed before grouting. Treatments come in many forms, both water-based and solvent-based.
24

Water-based products offer a host of advantages and, compared with solventbased formulations, many manufacturers claim that they perform equally well, or even better, than solvent-based alternatives. Water-based treatments can normally be applied over residual moisture and, somewhat surprisingly, tend to have faster drying times, cutting project time-scales. What’s more, water-based formulations are now available to protect from stains; to repel water; to enhance surfaces; and even block efflorescence. As ecological considerations have become more of a priority on the political and social agenda, manufacturers have increasingly
Above: Recent technological advances in natural stone sealers have expanded sealing options. Image from Aria Stone Gallery. promoted water-based sealants. They are better for the environment and the tradespeople who apply them. In particular, they help limit the amount of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) released into the atmosphere.
With solvent-based treatments, application methods are different and drying times are extended. But surfaces have to be completely dry before a solvent is applied. Ventilation may also be required to extract fumes. There are still some heavy-duty sealers, particularly those for external applications, that are solvent-based. These can offer some application advantages, particularly for aerosol sprays. Vanity tops and food preparation areas may need to have an impregnator applied. If required, users and installers should make sure that it is safe for use on food preparation surfaces. Product manufacturers will able to answer any questions. ❚
How to protect your natural stone correctly with Actichem Natural stone can provide a lifetime of beauty and functionality if properly protected and cared for. However, if not installed correctly or properly cared for, it will be subjected to several negative factors which can compromise its structural integrity and or its architectural beauty. These are some of the top issues associated with natural stone and tiles. 1. Mould Natural stone is typically very porous, and moisture that enters the stone, can sink deep into its structure. The moisture trapped in a porous, unsealed stone surface for as little as six hours will begin to contribute to biological growth – aka mould. This predominantly occurs in external stone surfaces and in washrooms. Aside from mould being a health hazard, it is not uncommon for stone surfaces to be damaged by harsh mould removal methods. A classic
Supplier August/September 2021
example of this, is the use of high-pressure cleaners on Sandstone and Limestone. 2. Salt Attack Salt attack is the curse of Australian sandstone. It occurs predominantly near the coast where sea air deposits its salt laden moisture on the open pore sandstone substrate. The dissolved salt is carried into the porous structure. As it dries it crystallizes and expands breaking apart the outer skin of the sandstone. Some sandstones can withstand salt attack better than others and the best way to protect the stones structural integrity is to treat it with a quality water repelling penetrating sealer. This will allow it to age naturally without exposing it to unnecessary damage.
calcite stone such as marble, limestone and travertine. Granite being an igneous rock is more acid-resistant and will rarely etch. Many foods and beverages are acidic and together with acidic washroom cleaners are the chief culprits of etching. To prevent etching – ensure stone surfaces are sealed, choose your washroom cleaners wisely and mop up spills immediately.
3. Etching Etching is predominantly the result of acidic liquids spilled on natural stone – especially

4. Staining All stone surfaces that are left unsealed, are susceptible to staining. Most foods, beverages, oils and rust will stain natural stone surfaces. Once a stone becomes stained, it can be very difficult to remove. The application of a good quality penetrating sealer is critical for stain prevention. Furthermore, always wipe up spills immediately. 5. Efflorescence Efflorescence is a result of dissolved minerals from the substrate being deposited on the surface and presents as a white powdery substance. The grout lines in between the stone can often be the culprit. Another frequent cause is the setting bed under floors or paving. Apart from perhaps sandstone very few natural stones give rise to efflorescence of themselves but are
rather affected by adjoining materials and substrates. Removal of the water source responsible for wetting the surface is the first step in remediation. Noting that often it can be due to poor drainage, sub-floor moisture and water behind the structure. Sealing the
stone with a quality penetrating sealer, will reduce water ingress and inhibit the salt from clinging onto the stone and becoming difficult to remove. web www.actichem.com.au ❚

LHS unsealed Australian Sandstone & RHS sealed with Spirit Premium Seal
Test first before use Spirit Sealers & Cleaners are constantly testing their line of products in the lab, in the field and on request to assess the strengths and weaknesses of their different types of sealers and cleaners they stock when used on a wide variety of different stones, porcelain tiles, and various concrete finishes. Why do they test so much? Because there are so many stones, from dense tight stones like granite to extremely porous loose sandstones that require cleaning and sealing. Due to the type of stone, particular cleaners may or may not be able to be used without damaging the stone, and due to the porosity, or lack thereof, the stone might be better suited to a particular type of sealer .
Not only do you need to know your sealer, but just as important, you need to know your stone and what it requires. The industry terms ‘penetrating’ and ‘impregnating’ pop up a lot when we talk about sealers. What we need to understand though is that sealers are allowed into the stone based on the porosity, they are not penetrating or impregnating the stone. To keep it simple, if we put a penetrating sealer onto a non-porous glazed porcelain tile it will not impregnate the tile. Yet if we pour plain tap water onto a sandstone tile it will go through it and leave a
puddle underneath. Does that mean it’s ‘penetrating’ water? Of course not, it’s just water that can easily flow through the sandstone. Something to think about, and don’t forget to test first! web www.spiritsealers.com ❚
IF ONLY THEY KNEW... Meet Ed and Sarah. They love their home and recently retiled their balcony using natural stone. The job was perfect and they were thrilled. But 1 month later, they started to get leaching as well as picture framing.
IF ONLY THEIR STONE MERCHANT OR TILER HAD RECOMMENDED EFFLOCK Efflock is an advanced additive that prevents migration of calcium hydroxide and other salts that cause efflorescence. It also provides a hydrophobic function for mortar to minimise picture framing in moisture sensitive stone. When added to screed, render, tile adhesive and grout, Efflock provides a primary water barrier and is proven to be a reliable solution for preventing efflorescence.

World class products on home soil Solutions Sealers have earned their reputation through providing excellent client support. They work together with Tier 1 tilers and trade applicators to ensure every key project is impeccably finished using the most appropriate sealers and correct methodology. Solutions Sealers understand that each project is unique. Subsequently their team of experienced technical advisors test and evaluate each project. They make their recommendations based on preliminary test results and, all of the other variables relevant to that particular project. This approach is why industry professionals trust that Solutions Sealers written warranty has credibility. To further demonstrate this let’s look at the state-of-the-art Sunshine Coast University Hospital (pictured).
A variety of different natural stone surfaces were specified at the Hospital. There was a lot of high traffic areas both inside and outside. A high quality, commercial grade, impregnating sealer was essential to assist in the long-term maintenance of these surfaces. After preliminary tests and consultation with the landscaper and the professional applicator, the sealer QUANTUM was selected for its exceptional performance
however, it may interest you to learn one of the key deciding factors, was QUANTUM’s unique flash-off time allowing for a timely application process. An element that was critical for this particular project. QUANTUM was essentially designed years ago during the construction of the Q1 Gold Coast. The tiler and professional applicator approached Solutions Sealers demanding a higher performing sealer than any others they could source locally or internationally. Being a local Australian manufacturer, Solutions Sealers were able to develop a product that not only met their stringent requirements but exceeded the performance values of international product equivalents. Solutions Sealers make world class products on home soil but more importantly, their team take pride in providing service. Software
The key to your business success
C
hris and Rose Adams have been the owners of 3D Kitchen design and production software since 1993 putting them in their 28th year now. The purpose for setting up this business was to provide premiere 3D Design and production software for the cabinet making industry with a focus on simplicity and accuracy. The motivation has been to ensure that they keep the software moving forward to give their customers the best possible results for their businesses. And so, 3D Kitchen has just completed a lengthy product upgrade which was released on the 23rd July 2021. Unfortunately, this release was many months behind their initial expected dates, but you will see that the results are great and worth the wait. The focus in this latest upgrade has been two-fold. Firstly, they have improved the 3D design function with the incorporation of the latest material colours, patterns and textures from suppliers to the industry. This ensures that 3D Kitchen users can correctly display to their own prospective clients, enhancing the sales process by increasing the reality of the design concepts being presented.
Secondly, a new job profiling function has been added at the design stage. This is a key change enabling each design to have unique characteristics which apply to design and importantly pass directly to production, including to CNC production. What is ‘job profiling’ and why is it important to you? Job profiling is a function that is presented to the designer at the beginning of each new design. At that point the designer makes choices regarding all design characteristics including but not limited to; default cabinet sizing, job materials (with associated thicknesses and edging), cabinet and component clearances, construction needs (such as whether backs are inside/
overall, or toe kicks are built-in/separate, etc.). Once this data is entered it forces all cabinets subsequently placed into the design to behave according to the rules you have set. Users can also set the chosen parameters as a default option for future designs. There is no limit to how many defaults you can create. This means the design process is much quicker and more accurate for production purposes. Importantly, you are not bound by the parameters you choose when you start your design. At any time, you can change the job values, and they are all automatically applied to the design instantly, including to cabinets already placed in the design. So, as you are all looking for the edge when it comes to business and profitability. 3D Kitchen provides the best tools to provide you with that edge in accuracy and speed of design coupled with high performance production results. You will want to see this for yourself, so contact any of their sales agents to start the move forward. ❚

Software
Apps for the Furniture Industry Article by Philip Ashley A recent study found that 42% of small businesses already have a mobile app and an additional 30% plan to build a business app in the future. There are more than 3.4 million unique mobile apps, so you can easily see where the trend lies. The word "app" is an abbreviation for "application." It's software that comes pre-installed on your computer, iPad, smart phone or watch, or it's software that you install on the device. Apps typically run locally on your device but can also run through a web browser. The three main types of apps are desktop apps, built for computers with mouse and keyboard interactions; mobile apps, designed for smartphones and touch inputs; and web, or browser-based apps. Some apps exist in all three forms. Some apps are ‘free’ but almost all of these are limited in their use. Paying the app developer some money unlocks more features. Generally, the cost is quite reasonable considering the developer spends some time making the app available, and usually maintaining it through upgrades on your device. You are paying for the convenience of not hunting for your audio meter, your spirit level or your notepad and pen.
Supplier August/September 2021
There are many apps available for the furniture manufacturing industry and their use has been booming since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic. This has been due in part to enforced or precautionary isolation of workers, especially in white-collar jobs. Companies are seeking more digitisation and apps feature strongly. Apple's App Store, for example, generated a turnover of 44.6 billion Australian dollars in the first half of 2020, which corresponds to a growth of 24.7 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. Marketing Apps Small to medium enterprises are increasingly turning to digitisation, using apps in all kinds of business areas from product data maintenance and sales, to productivity and finance. Salespersons are increasingly going out with a tablet and an app where they visualise the offer, and the contract on site. The sales report can be made directly on the tablet and entered into the business system. A small business may not immediately benefit from a highend marketing app that takes a while to master and depends on the willingness of your people to take it up, but its worthwhile knowing what’s out there. One app that is gaining a lot of attention is ‘Pinterest.’ Pinterest is a visual discovery engine where manufacturers and their customers can find the latest trends. Search furniture or kitchen and you will find a lot of ideas that your potential customers may already be looking at. ‘Houzz’ is another app where many Australian companies display their designs, and people can get in touch with the providers. Potential customers are able to search for businesses that may be
able to provide them with specific projects like renovations, or a new kitchen. For furniture, ‘IKEA Place’ is an interesting app that allows users to select items from their range and through augmented reality, place that item in their own home with the use of the camera on their device. When the item is placed you can literally walk around it with your iPad, or using two fingers, rotate the item or move it around the room. It takes a while to get used to, but we imagine customers will love playing with it, and are more likely to purchase something they’ve ‘seen’ in their own home. It’s ‘try before you buy” and it is very appealing. Developing an Augmented Reality app is, however, very expensive; starting out at around forty thousand dollars. Productivity Apps Productivity apps make people more effective. If you’ve ever chased someone around a factory to find out when a job will be complete, you would appreciate just being able to send them a text message. One of the more popular messaging apps is ‘WhatsApp’, a subsidiary of Facebook. With WhatsApp you can create groups of people and everyone in that group gets the same message. You can make calls and send images and video to others in the same group. It ensures accountability and co-operation between your people. If there’s an order you want out quickly, your factory manager, foreman, CNC operator and forklift driver can all be included in the request for action. WhatsApp is becoming more important in companies as a rapid communication tool, and it is also of increasing importance

Above: Augmented Reality as a sales and communication channel. The German online colour retailer MissPompadour is using WhatsApp in other ways. They receive about 9,000 to 10,000 orders per month, and the WhatsApp Business app helps facilitate 30 percent of this business. It’s called Conversational Commerce and is already seen as the next big trend in e-commerce and for which WhatsApp is an important way of implementation. ‘Dashboard’ software is another information management tool that tracks, gathers, and displays business data in interactive and customizable images that enable users to monitor the health of a business, analyse and check on processes, and provide their people with a to-do list. Other business apps handle payrolls; scan documents; organise payments; organise job priorities; develop your social media input; manage inventories; and tracks company vehicle mileage. But beware, there are pitfalls. Some apps may not work on your device as you update your operating system. For instance, an app might be great at scanning business cards and categorising them so you can find someone easily, but if the developer stops supporting it, the lost contacts will really hurt you. If you can make a backup, let’s say in Excel, you should do it regularly or at least before your device is updated.

Production Apps Production apps can be quite useful but in some cases, can become a distraction. Make sure any app you use contributes to the strength of your business. On the workshop floor you might find an app useful for measuring decibel readings from your machinery. A professional using a dosimeter may have a giggle over this, but these apps have been tested at an acoustics laboratory and are reasonably accurate, in fact to plus or minus 2dB, meeting (U.S.) national standards and occupational guidelines. Apps are available for a variety of end uses like converting measurements, finding levels (spirit level), and measuring like with a tape measure. ‘iHandy Carpenter’ is an app with five professional tools including a plumb bob, bubble level bar, surface level, steel protractor and steel ruler costing $3- that has mixed reviews, but most reviewers said it was useful if you are caught short without the real tool.
Above:
Pinterest App
Your machinery supplier is also generating apps for use on their equipment and with their software; some are free, and some come with a charge. The ‘ProductionAnalyzer’ app from Homag Group analyses the performance of your machinery and helps to uncover optimisation potential with your smartphone. SCM Group offers an app they call ‘Thundercut,’ an app for optimising the cutting sequence on a panel saw. Biesse Group have their own app ‘BDRIVE’ that allows their sales staff to access documents and promotional material on their iPad. With it you can take a virtual reality tour of their tech centre in Italy or view their company presentation. Weinig Group also have a range of productivity apps for their equipment.
Above: Weinig Apps There are so many apps available to help your business grow, to assist your people on the shop floor, to ensure your CNC machines are running at optimal efficiency, to monitor machine servicing and downtime, and to promote your business and the products you make. Your customers are turning to apps in greater numbers than ever before and if we have gained anything positive from COVID it would be that the way people do business is changing, and quicker than we think. To steal a word from a bank that stole it from someone else, it’s an App-Vantage. ❚

How software is transforming manufacturing for the better Article by Riley Henry What is software’s role in this industry? Software isn’t a new concept in the industry. It has been running machines and helping you design for a long time, but its role has been growing larger and more diverse in recent years. It’s more important than ever to be aware of the software relevant to you. This article is here to serve as your thorough introduction to the software that is revolutionising how Australian businesses are receiving, managing and processing client orders: Cabinetry Online. What is it? Cabinetry Online is the Australian made and managed solution for cut-to-size manufacturers that seamlessly integrates into your manufacturing process to diminish time and effort spent quoting and transitioning orders for cutting. Your private and intelligent ordering system is hosted online and easily accessible for your clients to extensively customise, instantly quote and submit their projects exclusively to you. The materials and product library, pricing, portal branding and more are determined by your custom settings to truly reflect your business and offering. Current manufacturers who have made the step to offering their product online, are in agreeance that online ordering provides a more manageable and streamlined experience for themselves and clients. “We can now offer our customers a reliable and consistent way to both quote and order their jobs through us.”
Supplier August/September 2021
Imagine being able to see live updates of when clients are working on projects. Cabinetry Online makes this a reality. Client details, settings, reports, and job information are accessible through your unique manufacturing portal, where you can view any client or project and download submitted jobs directly for production. This means no more double handling of emailed, faxed, or hastily scribbled customer orders to convert them into programs for cutting.

“It takes the time and effort out of producing cutting lists and allows us to effectively control what our customers have access to.” Stop losing time, and stop losing projects By enabling your customers to access a selfservice portal for generating their own quotes at whatever time of the day is convenient to them, they can get a price on a job before you even have to lift a finger. Think of the man-hours you/your team have to spend quoting a job or emailing back-and-forth just for prospects to change their mind, or what about jobs that you have missed out on because you didn’t have time to quote the project? Online accessibility means less quoting for you, faster turnarounds for your clients to get
back to their customers on jobs, and more chances of converting a quote into an order for production.

Your customers are already online If you have a website, then you know the enormous pool of customers browsing online at all times of the day. People are comfortable online, so directing new website visitors to an online portal is the most seamless and convenient way of converting them to active leads or clients. Eco & Sustainability
The Circular Economy Article by Philip Ashley A Circular Economy is an ecosystem where manufactured products do not lose much of their value. The basic principle of this system is not manufacturing, use, and disposal; but rather reduce, re-use, and recycle. But what could this mean for the furniture industry? An independent survey commissioned by CouriersPlease found 85 per cent of Australian consumers want retailers and brands to be more transparent about the origins and sustainability of their products. Accenture research showed that a third of consumers would favour retailers and brands that had shown a visible commitment to the environment and sustainability.
The current linear manufacturing process has a beginning, and it has an end; the end for the manufacturer is when it leaves the factory on the back of a truck. Currently, furniture manufacturers want to sell more new furniture, not recycle returns. A colleague of mine recently tried to replace her kitchen doors and went to the original manufacturer only to be turned away. The ten doors she wanted just wasn’t worth their while. I’m sure the next time she buys a kitchen, it will be from someone else.
According to the World Economic Forum, a circular economy is “An industrial system that is restorative or regenerative by intention and design.” In this scenario there is a beginning and an alternate ending that benefits the environment. The circular economy is arguably the most promising solution to the planet’s looming sustainability issues and is gaining momentum amongst consumers. As the planet’s population races to ten billion souls within the next few decades, it is clear that manufacturers will have to
The question for furniture manufacturers is: “How much more product would I sell if the customer knew I would recycle it, and what would be the cost of taking the product back?” Anyone can put a tag on a piece of furniture saying it’s ‘Made from recyclable materials’ but this actually means little if there is nowhere to return it, except at the tip. What is it? Our current industrial economy is largely dominated by linear processes. After the product is created, it’s transported to stores for consumers to buy and use. The linear process ends when the consumer finishes using the product. It’s put out on the kerb for collection on hard rubbish days where it may be broken down and some of it reused, or it ends up in landfill, where it will sit, slowly breaking down for hundreds of years. With luck the product goes to a charity but eventually it all ends up in the same place.

shift their priorities from linear to circular manufacturing. Who Practices it? The footwear company Nike collects worn-out shoes at their stores and grind them up to make a material called Nike Grind, which is used to make athletic surfaces for tennis courts, basketball courts, tracks, playground surfaces and athletic fields. Nike’s program is called ‘Reuse-A-Shoe’. Other companies that recycle used products include Levi Jeans, H&M clothing, and Apple.
Canon is just one example of the many electronics companies that have recycling programs in place for their broken or obsolete products. Customers fill out a form online and Canon send them a shipping label. You can then send back your consumer and home office products, including cameras and accessories, printers, binoculars, and calculators. Epson Australia is a founding member of the Tech Collect Program; a national computer, printer, and TV takeback program; a free service for the general public and small business to drop-off their unwanted televisions and computer products for recycling. In the furniture industry, IKEA is one manufacturer and retailer that will take back some of their own manufactured products and give the customer an IKEA refund. As an example, an IKEA office desk could return the customer between $70 and $124 depending on the condition. IKEA will then sell the
Supplier August/September 2021
furniture as-is through their own outlets. Kitchen benchtops, cabinets and fronts are not included in this deal. For most furniture manufacturers in Australia though; the ones who pay taxes here, it’s not so easy and some Government support may be needed to support a circular economy focussed industry. Why Change? The circular economy goes much further than merely recycling and reusing the materials from an office desk. It’s about evaluating the environmental impact of products and their components from the initial concept stage through to end-use. It’s not about the directors’ office chair that goes next to the production manager and ends up with in the janitors department or at the gatehouse. It’s about what happens after that. It’s also about the alternatives to just selling a product. Imagine leasing your furniture product, take-back and buy-back schemes, and helping customers repair, reuse and recycle old furniture like those ten doors I mentioned before?
Some simple ways to start practicing circular economy manufacturing is to make furniture that is more repairable, and offer parts like drawer fronts, doors, and shelves to replace broken or damaged ones in service. Help is at hand with Industry 4.0 able to accelerate the circular economy with modern manufacturing and waste technologies such as 3D printing, data analytics and modular design. The Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University and Deloitte revealed some of the barriers to manufacturers adopting a circular economy approach to their business. Manufacturers internal culture and willingness to collaborate in the value chain appeared high on the list. The lack of technical skills is another issue, and costs followed closely after that. Consumer interest was another concern and still is, but attitudes towards the environment are changing, and manufacturers who jump on board early will be the eventual winners. ❚

Three Generations and still, All Australian Flamingo Furniture is one of the most well-known and respected family businesses still operating. Located in the furniture manufacturing hub of Bayswater in Melbourne’s outer east, Flamingo enjoys a long-standing partnership with Biesse Group, a supplier as committed to Flamingo Furniture, as Flamingo is to their legions of customers. Flamingo Furniture was founded by Trevor and Anne Winter in 1981. Trevor had been working at a local sawmill in the outer eastern Melbourne township of Healesville, well-known for the animal sanctuary, farming, and timber cutting. Trevor had ambitions of his own Company and so, he started out on his own, committed to filling a need in the market for quality furniture. Moving from his back yard to a building owned by a friend, Trevor and Anne spent their first years in business living in a caravan at the back of the warehouse, building roll-top desks.

Above: Biesse Selco saw Their first desk was sold to an acquaintance who suggested Trevor start making them because there was nothing like them on the market. An order for two desks turned into five and Trevor and Anne were on their way, selling to furniture retail stores. Any money they made was put back into raw materials. Within two years Trevor had put on his first apprentice and he still works at Flamingo Furniture today, such is the high regard Flamingo is held amongst their employees. Outside of independent furniture retail outlets, one of their first major customers was Norman Ross, now trading as Harvey Norman.
Flamingo Furniture’s next move was into occasional furniture, and then, pine bedroom furniture. The range of elegant products are manufactured to consistently high standards, a quality benchmark Flamingo Furniture has maintained to this day. Initially in the middle of the pine bedroom furniture market, Trevor and Anne moved into Australian hardwoods and fought hard to lift their product to the top end. The product was sold through Harvey Norman stores from the retail chain’s inception in the early 1980’s, after Alan Bond bought Norman Ross from Grace Brothers.

Considering the fact that at one time a hundred packs of timber a month went through the factory, these machines have repaid Flamingo many times over. Brooke Winter, Trevor and Anne’s daughter and current CEO said, “Our Biesse machines and the Biesse company have never let us down.”
Above: Rover 346 (top) and Rover 321R In addition to the two Biesse CNC machines, Flamingo Furniture also have a 12-year-old Biesse Akron 425 edge banding machine that will be replaced soon, mostly because of new technology. Rounding out the suite of Biesse equipment is a Selco wn240 beam saw that was installed only a month or so ago, replacing an earlier Selco that provided solid service over twelve years. Production manager Ian Stones and factory manager Paul Hammond, both long-time Flamingo employees have worked with Biesse Group over many years. They are in agreement that, “Biesse make our lives easier.”

Above: Empire Bed Brooke admits that over the many years their Biesse machines have provided reliable service to Flamingo, the machines have saved an enormous amount of labour and increased product throughput. In fact, Brooke estimates that production time without their Biesse equipment would be four times longer than it is now; an untenable situation that could put the future of Flamingo Furniture at risk. Ian said of their Biesse equipment, “It would be impossible to live without them.” Pinpoint accuracy and the elimination of human error add to the underlying value of their investment with Biesse Group.
and if there’s a delay, they notify us straight away. We’re never left in the dark. We have a lot of confidence in Biesse delivering the service they say they will provide.” Ian adds, “It’s fantastic, if we order a stocked part before 2pm today, it’s delivered the following day, they’re very fast.”
Brooke concedes that in time, Flamingo Furniture will need to upgrade their Biesse CNC machinery. She will consider all options but knowing Biesse as a reliable product and Biesse Group as a supportive partner is a compelling reason to continue their long standing and profitable association. Brooke says, “Because our furniture designs are so traditional, we’ve been able to keep our Biesse machines in service longer than most manufacturers. We haven’t needed to upgrade for technology and while over 25 years of service is a fantastic return on our investment, we will eventually need to modernize.”
Above: Roll top desk
Over almost 30 years, Flamingo Furniture has had plenty of time to assess Biesse Group’s service and support. Brooke says, “I can’t fault Biesse’s customer service. Their followup, their time frames, their communication is amazing. When we book in a service, they come when they say they’re going to come
Three generations strong Flamingo Furniture is a proudly Australian owned family company that will celebrate 40 years in September this year. Three generations of the Winter family, still working in management, furniture design, marketing, and production have built a business that is truly an Australian Icon. And for over half their history, Flamingo have relied on Biesse Group’s leading-edge technology to provide a competitive edge while their competitors have largely fallen away. Brooke said, “With our range of bedroom furniture we largely stick with what we’re good at, but our aged care and commercial furniture allow us to explore new designs. Our long-standing success can be credited to our modern Biesse machinery, good management and loyal employees manufacturing a superior product that has stood the test of time.” ❚

Standing out through creativity and design Article by Philip Ashley “We don't create a single group of products. Thanks to the wide variety of materials and the varied technologies we use, we are able to tailor any project, for small scale or mass production,” Raffaele Bastianoni, owner Action Giromari. Action Giromari is a company based in Fano, Italy. Giromari develops stands, signs, branding products and anything that relates to visual communication. Their clients include Dolce & Gabbana and Lavazza amongst many other international designer brands. Other products include coverings, countertops, and custom-made interior design products for retail stores. The company stands out for its ability to work with any type of material, and to demanding timelines.
Above: Shop Display The town of Fano dates back 2,000 years. It was the largest Roman settlement in the Marche region, southeast of Pesaro, the home of Biesse Group. The area is home to a number of high-end yacht manufacturers and at one time Giromari produced interior components for several of those companies, including Pershing Yachts. Initially starting out laser engraving promotional materials and manufacturing trophies, Action Giromari is now recognised as one of the most progressive and design-oriented companies producing unique product displays for the retail sector.

Above: Raffaele (right) with Biesse Plast M5) Action Giromari has had its ups and downs, including the 2009 recession when manufacturing was hit hard. When most manufacturers were taking it slow and careful, Raffaele went fast and hard, expanding his production space fourfold! During the next few years Giromari reinvented themselves, discovering they could produce components for anyone. A major client back then was Clabo Refrigeration Group. They also produced funerary furniture for a time. Action Giromari could best be described as a creative workshop where technology and technical skill shape materials and bring any and all ideas to life. The production space is akin to a designers workshop. In the centre of the building, CAD design rooms and creative spaces are housed in an elevated position with materials stored underneath in a computer controlled automated warehouse. No space is wasted, and designers can work closely with prototyping persons. Spread around the workshop floor are several flatbed CNC machines of European origin, and a 5-axis Biesse Rover Plast M5
purchased in May 2016 that Raffaele says, “Has increased our production of complex shapes and 3D objects; unique products that have great value on the market.” Numerical control technology allows Action Giromari to cut, mill, score and shape each piece. The steps that follow, such as bending, assembly, gluing, all the way to final finishing, are exclusively carried out by hand. It’s a mix of high-end technology and artisan craftsmanship that allows Action Giromari to create products that highlight their clients’ identity as a company, to help them stand out in the market through creativity and design. Raffaele said, “We needed a machine specifically designed for industrial artisan work, but we also wanted a strategic partner for Giromari's technological development. Biesse Group worked so closely with us that I felt like we built the machine together.” Interestingly, even though Action Giromari’s clients are some of the World’s most successful companies, they still demand products manufactured to strict budget

requirements, and to quick timeframes. Inside Action Giromari there is a sign that says, ‘It can be done!’ It captures Action Giromari’s approach as a creative workshop, “That speaks to our pro-active attitude” says Raffaele. He adds, “Ideas will save the World and technology will help shape it for the better.” In a manufacturing business where machines and many different, often manual processes are used to produce a unique product, a staff of around 40 mostly young, open-minded employees work as a team to realise their clients’ vision.

The distinct aspect of Action Giromari is the ability to machine any type of material, whether it is sheet metal, methacrylate, metal, Alucobond, polycarbonate or polyurethane, wood, or wood-based panels. Raffaele said, “Every idea is welcome. Artisanship is the common thread that unites all our products but at the same time, we preserve industrial standards of quality, pricing, and timing.” Action Giromari have extensive experience serving big name retailers in multiple sectors, from pharmaceutical companies to fashion designers, from food & beverages to furniture; expositions and signs.

Action Giromari exists outside a world of mass production at the lowest possible cost. They are unique in combining high technology with craftsmanship to make exclusive products from a wide range of materials that are desirable, artistic, and functional. Action Giromari are not locked in to one product and so, their distinctive abilities command a higher return. Making something that everyone else produces, usually means your product is sold on price. Creating something that is unique leads to better margins, loyal clients, and a solid future. ❚
