The offcut material normally ends up as boiler fuel, which is a waste of a precious resource. One day while on a long flight he began doodling and came up with the idea for this product. He tested it for 10 years before commercialisation.
Now there is a new and unique option which really leaves all the other outdoor flooring choices looking decidedly mundane. You could think of it as outdoor parquetry. Called Hexidek, it quickly creates a beautiful and natural canvas upon which to paint your own ideal Garden of Eden. The product is an award-winning Australian innovation from Ecquality Timber Products. The company is currently looking for distribution channels throughout the country. The inventor of the product conceived it as a way to avoid the terrible waste of wood that irritated him as the owner of a flooring and decking factory.
The first thing about it is how visually striking it is. There is nothing else that looks remotely like it. That is because it really is a fresh idea. Hexidek is protected by Australian and international patents. It is a DIY product that can be as simple or as complex as you like, depending on the style and arrangement of tiles. Installation is quick and easy, requiring about 10 minutes per square metre of balcony space. There is no need to use a tradesman. It is easy to keep clean because it can be squirted gently with the hose and water can flow away underneath unimpeded to the existing drain. The decking material sits above the concrete on a polypropylene base, so it dries quickly and cannot mould. It can be wiped occasionally with any low-odour, low VOC decking oil to preserve its natural colour, and protect the surface of the wood.

Hexidek sets the new standard in outdoor decking and beautiful balconies. I f you have a balcony or patio that could do with a facelift, read on. Over the last 30 years the number of Australians living in apartments has grown by over 80%, and if townhouses are included the number is significantly higher. The choice to live in an apartment is sometimes driven by budget, but it is increasingly a life-style choice because apartments offer convenience, the opportunity to live in more vibrant areas, and often cut commuting time. The disadvantages of apartment living include space constraints, less garden and limited areas to enjoy the sun and fresh air.
Hexidek – creating beautiful balconies
For those living in apartments, the desire for a bit of green does not diminish, it just gets a bit more creative. A growing trend in recent years has been the balcony garden phenomenon. A quick search of Google or Instagram serves up a host of great ideas. Pot plants and lattices are prominent. For the floor, artificial grass, ceramic, and wooden deck tiles are common choices.

Antimicrobial surface protection and identification
Pylon’s Bio-Guard Coating is used in a variety of industries to create more hygienic environments that complement existing cleaning protocols. Recent success with Bio-Guard has been recognised in the aged care sector, hospitals, medical centres, commercial furniture and joinery, wall panelling and benchtops, doors, handrails, and is recommended for many surfaces that could pose a threat of cross-contamination.
P ylon Coatings has been formulating, supplying, and supporting premium coatings for the Australian industry since 1950. One of the most successful developments in recent years has been the Bio-Guard Coating range that creates more hygienic surfaces with the use of Polygiene Biomaster. Additionally, the range incorporates Polygiene Verimaster security technology to verify the presence of the antimicrobial technology.
Pylon Coatings has successfully tested the Bio-Guard polyurethane coating against SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, on treated surfaces. When tested to ISO 21702:2019 Pylon Coatings saw a reduction in SARS-COV-2 on the surface of up to 82% after 4 hours when compared to a control.
Bio-Guard Coating is a dedicated range of antimicrobial coatings that incorporates Biomaster during the manufacturing process to become an integral part of the coating giving permanent 24/7 product protection against harmful pathogens such as MRSA, E-Coli and Legionella and now proven to inactivate the virus SARS-COV-2.
Pylon’s Bio-Guard Coating also incorporates Verimaster security technology, a covert identification system designed to verify the presence of the antimicrobial technology. This plays a vital role for this coating range to enable the coating to be identified before and after the job has been installed.
“The long-time partner Pylon Coatings is a good example of how our range of technologies can increase the value of our customers’ products by creating more hygienic surfaces, where the antimicrobial effect also can be checked and verified.
And for the end user it will help extend the life of their products, resulting in a more sustainable product,” says Ulrika Björk, CEO Polygiene Group.
Pylon Coatings is one of Australia’s leading suppliers of premium coatings to the joinery industry and is proud to be 100% Australian owned and made. According to the managing director Ron Pajor, “We are proud to be working with Biomaster and excited to announce these latest viral test results to the industry. This coating system will create more hygienic surfaces to meet the demands for today’s requirements.”

Two of CDK’s many prime movers are Joint Managing Directors James Woodyatt and Jonathan Height who both started with CDK Stone about five years after the company commenced. Jonathan mainly worked in sales and James mainly on the technical side. They’ve both grown with the business, working very closely together since the early days. They complement each other and are open and honest about their abilities. If Jonathan sold a machine, he would often be found working with James to instal it.
CDK Stone is about people. Their vision? To bring value to the industry and their clients; to nurture great people who do extraordinary things.
The business changed when Jonathan spoke with CDK’s founder Paul De Kok about the future. Jonathan advised Paul that in his opinion, the business could not remain Article by Philip Ashley 16Above: CDK Stone Directors
In 1979 Paul De Kok came to Australia to head up the stone division of the Colson Group. In 1982, that division, Colson De Kok Stone, became CDK Stone when Paul and four partners purchased Coulson Group’s shares. The company was run by only a few people selling granite blocks to monumental and commercial masons. There were some slate and marble tiles in the mix, some abrasives, diamond blades, chisels, tools, and the odd machine. At that time kitchen manufacturers were supplying mainly laminate or wooden benchtops, with the occasional stone top installed by a monumental mason.
CDK Stone, Value for Industry
“Everything people do in a small business, we did,” James recalls.
Evolution and Development
14
As opportunities for CDK in the slate market decreased, Russell Santon, one of CDK’s original partners, pushed for CDK to start importing stone slabs, a move that saw some growth in the company that accelerated when stone started to become popular in the kitchen industry. At that time, most stone machinery used in Australia was designed mainly for monumental masons. It was not really suitable for benchtop production. It was slow and inefficient but as the industry grew, CDK was able to source more suitable equipment, adding significant value to the stone industry.

Biesse Group recently celebrated twenty years in Australia and New Zealand. Building on the legacy created by Allwood Machinery since 1979, Biesse Group continues to lead the market with technological innovation and service to the industry, both here and around the globe.
Biesse Group started as a small family company in 1969. In fact, the founder, Giancarlo Selci is still active within the company that has grown to become one of the World leaders in technologies for the wood, glass, stone and advanced materials industries. 85% of Biesse Group turnover is generated outside of Italy, and it is in servicing those diverse markets that Biesse Inthrives.1989 Biesse opened their first international subsidiary in the United States and in 2002, opened in Australia and New Zealand. The company now manufactures equipment of proven and consistent quality in several international locations and is renowned for their wide range of versatile products that cater for all sectors of the industry, from the small, family operated business through to the largest, fully automated companies.

Recently, Biesse Group Australia and New Zealand celebrated their 20th anniversary with an impressive open house at their Sydney showroom with over 20 machines running live demonstrations; along with 12 trade partners in tooling, software, finance, dust extraction, and consumables. Australian CEO Michael Bullock congratulated his people and said, “No one puts on an event like Biesse Group.” Coming out of COVID, Biesse is set to continue their leading market position as the World opens up again. Early Days Biesse Group was originally renowned for their innovative CNC machines. Since their beginnings in 1969, Biesse brought out what seemed like a never ending stream of machines that continually pushed the envelope of woodworking technologies. Early CNC drilling machines known even now as ‘point to point’ gave way to machines with one, then two routing spindles. Grooving and horizontal drilling was available in one axis, then two and later at any angle. Pretty soon, tool changers were added, first in a fixed position, then riding with the routing spindle.

“There was a feeling at Allwood that the Biesse brand was poised to expand. the Biesse technology was exhilarating, there were new developments coming out on a seemingly regular basis and the industry here was benefitting from it all.”
Troy is one of many professionals at Biesse Group who have seen the company expand through the development of their wide range of machines. From CNC processing through panel cutting and edge-banding, to the varied machines suitable for processing a wide range of materials. Troy said, “There was a feeling at Allwood that the Biesse brand was poised to expand. the Biesse technology was exhilarating, there were new developments coming out on a seemingly regular basis and the industry here was benefitting from it all.”
Early on, Australia and the United States were two of Biesse’s biggest markets. The US shares many similar industry characteristics with Australia. “Our bespoke work led to many new ideas coming out of both 22
A Wealth of Experience
Troy Pearce started with Allwood Machinery in 1996, a few years before they became the Biesse agent. He’s still with Biesse Group today and has worked in every division; wood, stone, and advanced materials, representing Biesse Group in several Australian States and New Zealand. Troy typifies the wealth of experience Biesse Group holds within its people, they have real-world experience, they know what they are talking about.

Lee Barlow is Biesse Group Australia sales manager. He says of the transition, “It was a successful team that started us out twenty years ago. There has been some natural progression over the last two decades but our passion and commitment to our customers and our people is as strong now as it was when this journey began. It has always been about great machines and strong relationships with our customers. It’s our commitment that we continue to provide the best machines, supported by great service for the next twenty years and beyond.”
The first Biesse CNC machines were introduced in Australia in the mid1980’s. There were a number of suppliers providing a wide range of basic and advanced machinery from Europe, the United Kingdom and Japan. One of the leading players was Allwood Machinery, started in 1979 by John Cover and Jake Martin. John recalls, “We left of current employer to start up our own company. There were just the two of us and Heather, our first receptionist. Things went better that we expected and within a few years we had finally settled our Australian head office in Widemere Road, Wetherill Park with about fifty people working for us.”
Above: Troy Pearce
John continues, “When Biesse’s Roberto Selci came out to Australia we tried to convince them to work with us as their agent. They weren’t too sure at first but eventually they gave us the chance and gave it our best shot. The rest is history and twenty years ago, when we realised Biesse had bigger ideas than us, we decided it was time to hand over the reins, to effectively allow Biesse to grow and become the leading Australian industry provider it is today.”

A Vision for the Future
Above: Michael Bullock countries, nesting is the best example of that. In Europe, standardised cabinetry lends itself to more traditional manufacturing using beam saws to book-cut the majority of their work” said Troy. It could be fair to say that Australia benefitted immensely from Biesse as a machinery supplier, and Biesse benefitted from their relationship with Australia in terms of product development. And that development has not slowed, in spite of a pandemic that has had an impact on almost every industry around the World. Troy said, “Reincarnation is what makes Biesse Group what it is today. We are motivated to be the industry leader; to develop and support not only our customers, but our staff as well.” Biesse Group’s recent release of the High Dynamic technology is an example of how the company is committed to providing technology that has a positive effect on the user’s bottom line with more output in less time.

In the early 1980’s John Cover and Jake Martin saw in Biesse, a company that was to become one of the leading players in the Australian and New Zealand markets. Their intuition was on the money; John said, “Both Jake and I are extremely proud that we could have been part of the Biesse journey. It’s amazing to see what is on display here today, and it’s clear to see Biesse Group continues to lead.” It would be fair to say that from the mid-1980’s, Biesse machines catapulted the industry into a new manufacturing era and that the new technologies show no signs of slowing down. To maintain this leading edge, Biesse Group recognise the importance of after sales support. Biesse’s staff are engaged in a continual program of development in a wide range of skills, not the least that of supporting the customer. After sales service is a challenge to any supplier and recognising this fact is an important step in meeting the customer’s needs. CEO Michael Bullock said, “We’ll never have a technician waiting at your door in case a machine needs service, what we can guarantee is continual improvement in this area, including frequent communication with our “Thecustomers.”business environment is constantly changing and there are a lot of external factors that affect Biesse Group as well as our customers. We will do everything we can to honour our commitments, we don’t pass on any additional costs and wherever possible, we keep our customers in the loop.” Michael continues, “A major aspect of the Italian identity is passion. Our team of technicians is in my opinion the best in the industry and our passion and loyalty to both our team and our customers is something I think shines through. We never sit still, we are flexible and despite some interesting times, we are well-set for the future.”
Another recent technology is Biesse Group’s T-Jet, a solution patented by Biesse that removes chips and dust during routing operations with air jets that follow the routing spindle through its movements, ejecting dust from the kerf and into the dust extraction system. It’s the only technology of its kind on the market, cleaning the routing cuts and almost entirely eliminating residual dust left on the material. The effects are incredible to watch and lead to reduced downtime spent cleaning the table, improved vacuum holding at high speeds, and longer tool life due to the tool not re-cutting dust left in the grooves.

Image a planet where the making and labelling of products all communicated, they were ‘Nature Positive’ rather than just ‘sustainable’ or ‘eco-friendly’ and they each had QR Code linked to a scorecard that presented scientifically evidence that showed how the product achieved its ‘nature positive’ status, all verified by an independent third party. Many of us dream of living in a world where all have healthy, equitable lives in a natural world that is flourishing, and while it is still a long way off, it is still possible if we all make deliberate decisions to ‘buy right’ and ‘do Asright.’anyone who has tried to set out on this ‘better living’ pathway will likely have found, it is not always easy. To get there, we need to be able to easily access products with accurate claims based on proper scientific methods and meaningful metrics to cut through the deliberate ‘tangle of weeds’ that is the marketing hype and disinformation laid out variously by politicians, media, manufacturers, and other self-interested companies. We need to seek out the clarity and correctness within information being proffered. One of those major ‘tangle of weeds’ or barriers to a healthier, more ethical, and flourishing future or ‘cleaner earth’ is a concept known as With‘Greenwashing’.morethan60 percent of consumers inclined towards buying cleaner, greener products saying they would be open to paying more for a sustainable product, trust in what is being said on labels and in marketing becomes their number one concern.

Police stormed their Frankfurt headquarters, uncovering the extent of greenwashing in relation to a whistleblower’s allegations of false and misleading ESG claims, relating to $US450 billion of the assets DWS manages.
2. Vague Claims Claims such as ‘Green,’ ‘Eco-friendly,’ ‘Healthy’ are explicitly targeted by the ACCC in their ‘Green marketing and the Australian The ACCC states explicitly, ‘Goods must comply with any description that is provided, and this is especially relevant to claims regarding recycled and recyclable content or the environmental impact of components used in the product.’

Using emotive images of leaves, nature, or animals unrelated to the product or even green colours on packaging, are all ways of classic greenwashing. In truth, genuinely eco-friendly products generally use simpler images and plain packaging, but even this technique can be mimicked as greenwash.
25
What is Greenwashing? Greenwashing is a claim made about a product or service that it actually doesn’t have. Greenwashing techniques used can be as simple as a plain lie, they can also be more subtle and involve things unsaid, covered under Australian Consumer Law (ACL). The ACCC states in their ‘Green marketing and the Australian Consumer Law’ publication that ACL applies to all forms of marketing by businesses and across all mediums, dealing with ‘False, Misleading and Deceptive Conduct.’ Deceptive claims only need to be likely to mislead or deceive; it doesn’t matter whether the claim actually misled anyone, or whether the business intended to mislead. Serious examples include fines of up to $1.1 million. The ACCC states explicitly, ‘Goods must comply with any description that is provided, and this is especially relevant to claims regarding recycled and recyclable content or the environmental impact of components used in the product.’
1. Emotive and Natural Imagery
The international standard on Company Self Declarations ISO 14021 specifically precludes use of the terms ‘sustainable’, claims relating to ‘sustainability’, unqualified claims of ‘carbon neutral’ or ‘carbon neutrality’, and prescribes general claims like ‘environmentally safe’, ‘environmentally friendly’, ‘earth friendly’, ‘non-polluting’, ‘green’, ‘nature's friend’, ‘ozone friendly’ (and the like), shall not be used.
4. Hidden trade-offs
Such as clothing or fabric that says ‘natural’ or ‘recycled’ materials while it is actually manufactured using labour employed under conditions considered modern slavery.
There is ample evidence in Global
Remedies to Greenwash
3. Misleading Claims Where products are labelled ‘Natural,’ ‘Organic,’ etc. without any supportive information. There is a good chance that these labels are self-created, solely by marketing teams. They can include creating fake ‘ecolabels’ e.g., showing a picture of a cute koala in a circle. This type of misleading logo invention is something we have all experienced and it happens Evenconstantly.company names that imply green or healthy credentials of its products and do not deliver, maybe considered misleading. There is ample evidence in Global GreenTag’s experience where unconscionable or unknowing manufacturers illegally co-opt real Certification Marks and Certificates for products they are not entitled to use them on. GreenTag issues multiple, successful, ‘Cease and Desist’ lawyer warning letters each year calling for immediate removal of its Marks.

Third party evidence
Manufacturer claims must be supported by easily accessible, and understandable, genuine, third party evidence of scientific testing, assessment against specific recognised standards and verification by a qualified third party or certification system.
A product that is certified and backed up with all the necessary details is a safer way to purchase.
5. Irrelevant Claims Labels that say products are free of certain chemicals, yet the substances might actually be banned by the law and irrelevant to advertise as going green. Or labels that say, ‘not tested on animals’ therefore, irrelevant because animal testing is illegal.

Scientific data trends in building trust The requests for more products to be scientifically and independently certified are also on a dramatic upward trajectory, driven by the need for specific evidentiary requirements and carbon metrics from the market generally, ESG focussed companies and property funds and especially from green building and infrastructure rating tools. Sustainable Waste Behaviour
H ideaway Bins are determined that not only the manufacturing process of its products is environmentally sustainable but are passionate about enabling better waste behaviours at work and at home. By developing smarter waste separation systems, Hideaway Bins is in a unique position to have a more positive environmental impact than simply what it does during the production of its products.
Hideaway Bins recognises that sustainability is a journey rather than a destination and is committed to not only being a responsible manufacturer but also a driver for change in our society. Sustainable Manufacturing To minimise wasteful use of packaging in their production process, all cardboard and plastic packaging for components is carefully sorted, stored, and returned to local suppliers, so that the packaging can be re-used time and time again. Any waste that cannot be reused is recycled. All waste cardboard or plastic packaging is sent for recycling, as are any reject metal or plastic Ascomponents.anotherexample, the Hideaway team have spent significant time redesigning their packaging with the goal that all packaging will eventually be 100% recyclable. Polystyrene packaging has been completely removed from the Concelo range and replaced with kraft paper or cardboard packing which are 100% recyclable.
The area where Hideaway Bins sees its greatest opportunity to protect their natural environment is by promoting and enabling better waste behaviours in the community. There is a direct correlation between making it easier and more convenient for people to sort and recycle waste within the home or office and the amount of waste that is diverted away from landfill. If people have tools to help them to sort waste and recycling easily then they are more likely to do it, ultimately assisting local councils with the larger goal of zero waste. For example, in a commercial office setting, the installation of three Concelo 1 x 35L bins side by side is an innovative and durable solution for encouraging better separation of waste, compostables and recycling. In a residential setting, space is often at a premium, and it can be difficult to fit more than a standard twin bin system into a kitchen design. Hideaway Bins have an array of bin options and sizes, including a twin bin system that can be stacked inside a standard height kitchen cabinet to provide a four bin recycling solution for the homeowner.
Sustainable Design Hideaway bins has always focused on designing quality products that are robust and durable. Because they are built to last, Hideaway Bins do not need to be replaced prematurely and are a more sustainable use of resources. For example, to maximise durability, all plastic components used in our Hideaway Bins are manufactured from virgin materials. They are still completely recyclable at the end of their life, and any waste generated during the molding process is reground for reuse in other products.

Further designs of cutters were made which also proved very popular. Over the years the range has been expanded and, to meet increased demand, new manufacturing equipment has been acquired. Because of the wide range of cutters required in the woodworking industry, both standard and special, the flexibility and high precision of CNC machines was needed to meet the requirements of tool production. To date 15 C.N.C. metal cutting and grinding machines sourced from both Japan and Korea, together with other Japanese support machines, form the basis of the equipment of Australia’s biggest manufacturer of woodworking tools.
F ounded in 1986 as a general toolmaking company, Crown Tooling originally located itself in St Mary’s NSW and as a coincidence happened to start a shop right next door to a saw doctor. This was a mutually beneficial arrangement with Crown taking a special interest in woodworking tools and their use and construction. Back in those days most woodworking tools were of the ‘Brazed Tip’ type with the tungsten carbide tip needing initial grinding of the profile, using diamond grinding wheels. These tools required periodic grinding to re-sharpen the cutting edge. This sharpening process had to be carried out by specialist sharpening services with, normally, a week or so turn-around time. This was a tedious arrangement and where the customer was producing large quantities of parts, or the tool got chipped or damaged due to a foreign body embedded in the timber they would have to stop production and either exchange tools with a duplicate tool or run round to the Saw Doctor for a rush re-sharpen. This re-sharpen problem had been solved many years earlier in the metal working industries by the introduction of clamped tip, interchangeable inserts. So, why not in the woodworking industry? At the time interchangeable inserts for straight profiles were just becoming available from Europe. Crown decided this was the way to go so proceeded to import various knives enabling it to produce a range of tooling with insert knives that would replace the old stile brazed type tooling with replaceable knife Crowntooling.offered this range to the market proving very popular with the local customers This first step started a gradual expansion of disposable tipped tool manufacture in Australia.

C ut-to-size manufacturers face a range of challenges in the post-COVID environment. The effect of staff shortages is being felt industry-wide and there is no quick-fix resolution. One solution is for cut-to-size manufacturers to onboard online quoting and ordering systems to relieve some pressure.

This staff shortage has been caused primarily by the pause in international immigration. Now Australian states compete amongst themselves for the limited talent available. A catch 22 situation will soon be arising when skilled immigrants arrive and also need housing, which is already in short Whensupply.interviewing a selection of cut-to-size manufacturers, five out of six believe that the biggest challenge that the industry faces is a lack of skilled staff. “It's just a lot of overtime for everybody,” says Mick Hussin from Online Flatpacks, “and then you know, somebody gets COVID, and they are off for a week. Staff for us is the biggest problem.” This results in businesses having to pay more overtime, thus reducing profit. Another likely outcome is wage inflation which could cripple businesses already facing a myriad of challenges.
What can you as a CNC manufacturer do?
You will have a real-time overview of how many orders are in the pipeline, which have been dispatched and how many have been delivered already. This helps better manage production
When asked what he foresees in the future, Steve Fitzgerald from Flatpax Cut to Size says, “I think more flat pack suppliers will come into play. We are also selling a lot to domestics (general public), and they are doing it (installing) themselves. You know, we rarely get any phone calls from them, so the system does work even with people who don't have loads of experience.”

“The speed at which you can draw up a project and then quote it, is really good,” says Kevin Jacobs from Tassie Cabinets on the Cabinetry.Online ordering system. “So that is what's really helped me I think in my growth. I've often drawn up and quoted a house-lot of cabinetry in four hours.”
Kevin Jacobs sums it up, “It's like hiring another person, but you’re not paying their wages.”
And importantly, the manufacturer is in complete control of the pricing.
“The business is no longer bogged down or held back by what used to be the tedious and time-consuming process of creating quotes manually. It's like hiring another person, but you’re not paying their wages.”

Many CNC manufacturers are seeing changes already. “We've got quite a few cabinet makers that shut their shops over the last 12 months, now they're just buying everything from us, and they find it so much easier,” explains Mick Hussin.” So, we assemble for them, and we deliver it straight to their sites. All they have got to do is turn up and install it.”
Adopting an online ordering system is, as Retief Joubert from Provence Brothers puts it, “a no-brainer.” When asked how much time and effort the Cabinetry.Online online ordering system saves him, Ben Harding from Trade Cut2Size explains, “It is hard to quantify. I would guesstimate that the programme basically acts like one or one and a half very qualified employees.”
This system increases productivity because cut-to-size manufacturers do not need to engage in the tedious and time-consuming process of creating quotes. The quotes are created automatically. Customers can make as many adjustments as they require and get the information they need instantly.
Anotherplanning.cost-saving feature is highlighted by Mick Hussin from Online Flatpacks, “We just love the ease of it. The fact that you know, we get 50% upfront and 50% before we deliver. No one is chasing money.” It would seem that the cabinetry industry is at a turning point. The industry has seen this before in the 1930’s when a new product called Laminex revolutionised cabinet making. And then again in the 1980’s when CNC machines became widely used and, on average, replaced eight skilled workers. Now in 2022, we are facing another turning point. Online quoting and ordering systems are revolutionising the industry. As Ben Fatchen from Cabinet Systems puts it, “The business is no longer bogged down or held back by what used to be the tedious and time-consuming process of creating quotes manually.”
Along with streamlining the quoting and ordering process, an online ordering system provides a central hub for all orders.

T he Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute estimates that between 78 and 81% of Australians aged 55 years or older, depending on their age cohort, want to live in their own home as they age rather than entering specialised aged care. People want to maintain a sense of community, privacy and independence – experiences that are better provided for in one’s own home, and all of which are needed to remain happy and healthy, well into old age. As we grow older, daily tasks that were once second nature can become difficult and time-consuming due to reduced mobility and advancing medical conditions. Specific architectural details and design elements can help ensure a home is safe, functional, and suitable for the needs of individuals aging in place as independently as possible. If these factors are not considered early in the design phase, the homeowner will face costly modifications in the future. One of the most important spaces for the aging population is the kitchen. It is one of the most used rooms in the home – a space where people prepare and eat meals, connect with family, and entertain guests. The kitchen must not only meet the functional needs of its users, but it must also address their lifestyle and aesthetic preferences. Achieving a balance of accessibility and style ensures a kitchen will bring joy and happiness to its users for their entire lifetime.

Whether called independent living, barrierfree, or aging-in-place design, the goal is to create living spaces that are universally accessible. All these design philosophies are firmly rooted in the principles of universal design, which focuses on designing environments that are safe and comfortable for any age. This broad approach accounts for the physical and mental difficulties faced by occupants as they age and allows you to create a space that will not need adaptation or functional changes in the future.
49
Design principles for aging in place
• Principle 4: Perceptible information. The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or the user's sensory abilities.
The seven key principles of universal design are summarised below:
Aging in place
• Principle 1: Equitable use. The design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities.
The vertical alignment of work surfaces is equally as important as providing a clear floor area. Cupboards, shelves, and workbenches should be set at a height appropriate for the user or be easily Workbenchesadjustable. and sinks need to be low enough to use from a wheelchair and have sufficient space for wheelchair access below them so that wheelchair users or people who have difficulty standing for any length of time can sit and work.
These principles are reflected in the Liveable Housing Design (LHD) Guidelines. The LHD Guidelines assist the residential building, property industry and governments to better understand how to incorporate easy living features into new housing design and construction. Three levels of performance are provided (Silver, Gold, and Platinum), which can be voluntarily applied to all new dwellings.
For a flexible long-term solution, adjustableheight support bracket systems are available for height adjustment of work surfaces. These systems include fixed brackets and mechanical and electrical adjustable-height worktop mechanisms that allow the user to easily move a work surface to a comfortable position. Sinks and tapware
Supplier August/September 2022 www.suppliermagazine.com.au Design & Trends • Principle 5: Tolerance for error. The design minimises hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions. • Principle 6: Low physical effort. The design can be used efficiently and comfortably and with a minimum of fatigue. • Principle 7: Size and space for approach and use. Appropriate size and space are provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of user's body size, posture, or mobility.
The LHD Guidelines emphasise designing homes that are safer, more comfortable, and easier to access for everybody, at all stages of life. Design elements for kitchen spaces are included to support ease of movement and easy adaptation and provide useful guidance for designers and specifiers.
Designing an accessible kitchenlocation and layout Kitchen layouts are typically designed around work zones – an accessible kitchen design is no exception. The ‘kitchen work triangle’ design rule requires the oven, sink and refrigerator to be placed in close proximity to each other. As the most frequently used appliances in the kitchen, it is important to keep them on the same level to allow the user to transition between work zones easily. This layout keeps the user from wasting time during food preparation, cook time and clean-up. Accessible kitchens should have sufficient clear floor area to enable a person using a wheelchair or with limited mobility to move freely and work effectively. The LHD Guidelines provide (for Platinum level homes) a minimum clear opening width of 900mm and with a minimum corridor/passageway width of 1200mm.
The appropriate turning diameter and approach in front of all workbenches should also be provided. The LHD Guidelines suggest at least 1550mm clearance in front of fixed benches and appliances (excluding handles).
Adjustable work surface heights
50
The height of a sink should allow for easy use and access by wheelchair users. The depth of the sink is important too – a sink that is too deep will be difficult to reach into for users with restricted mobility. Shallow sink bowls are more suitable for accessible applications. Lever handle taps or sensor-operated taps are preferred as they are easily operated by users with limited hand strength. An extendable hose spray can be specified to increase the range of use.
Cabinet doors with hinges should be replaced with lift-up doors to give easy access to utensils while keeping the area clear and providing free movement. Cabinets that are too deep and difficult to reach inside should be avoided. Pull-out or pull-down options provide excellent accessibility compared with traditional cabinets. Mobile storage that can fit under a workbench or be moved around the space as needed may also be considered.
Dishes, food items, and cooking tools stored in conventional cabinets, shelving and drawers can be challenging for mobilityimpaired users to access. It is possible to incorporate moveable wall cabinets that can be moved closer to the user with a simple push of a button. An electric lift enables the cabinet to move diagonally, downwards, and upwards to a height where it can be accessed by a wheelchaired user.
Anti-slip flooring
Cabinet, shelf, and drawer design
Appliances
According to the Australian Government, nearly one in three older Australians have suffered a fall in the last year. Kitchens are among the most dangerous spaces in the home because spills can easily become a slip hazard. To minimise the risk of a fall, flooring with anti-slip properties should be specified. Quality flooring suppliers should be able to demonstrate that their floors have been independently tested to the required level of slip resistance. Everyday wear and tear can also reduce performance of floor. To make life easier for the occupant, select a floor that is durable and easy to clean. Low-maintenance flooring is important so that an ageing user is not burdened with regular cleaning or Spanningmaintenance.ahistory of 65 years, Nover is a proud Australian owned and operated company specialising in the wholesale distribution of quality products to the kitchen, joinery, and furniture manufacturing sector. Ovens and other cooking appliances should be placed at a height suited to the user. The oven and microwave should be placed close to a flat workbench so the user can quickly transfer hot dishes to a safe surface. Appliances with side or upward opening doors will be safer and easier to use for users with restricted mobility. Cooktops should be set into heightadjustable work surfaces with front or facemounted controls. Staggered burners can be specified to reduce the need to reach across the Unattendedcooktop.appliances are a major cause of kitchen accidents. For this reason, appliances with automatic shut-off options should be selected. Ample space and clearance around appliances should also be provided to ensure safety and convenience. Electrical outlets During design, it is important to consider the number of appliances required and ensure that it does not exceed the capacity of the kitchen. Appliances should be placed close to the outlet they are plugged into. No appliance should be connected to an outlet that passes over a sink.

Lighting Good lighting in the correct areas can make tasks easier to do, reduce eye strain and prevent accidents – all factors that can help improve quality of life and independence. Consider lighting in high-use spaces, such as under cabinets, wardrobes, cabinets, and storage areas. Do not forget to ensure light switches are easy to use and accessibly placed. Automated light switches or movement sensors that turn on lights when a user enters the room, or when a cupboard or storage area is opened, will eliminate the hassle of manual operation in some applications.

“The warmth, beauty and unique grain of peeled spotted gum veneer made the specification of Big River Amourfloor and ArmourPanel an early decision with respect to internal finishes,” Holmes says. Big River’s veneers are available in various thicknesses for use in floors, walls, furniture, and cabinetry enabling a well curated and crafted palette of natural materials to be employed.

Externally the material palette incorporates natural grey concrete block, which has been used extensively as breeze block, and ‘shou sugi ban’ charred timber cladding, against the prevalence of Big River Group’s warm Spotted Gum floor and wall panel and custom-made cement features internally.

I t was a shared passion for traditional Japanese and mid-century modern architecture that drove the inspiration behind the design of Wabi Sabi House. The family home, located 3.6 kilometres east of Melbourne’s central business district in Hawthorn, is adjacent to a leafy park and overlooks the Yarra River. Five years in planning gave Stuart Holmes Architect and his wife an intimate understanding of the plot, its relationship to the environment and the opportunities it could yield. Connecting to the stunning natural surrounds was an early consideration of the design narrative, which is now articulated through the lived experience of the finished home. “There is a limited palette of materials which has been used according to a reasonably strict set of design rules,” says Holmes. “The cohesiveness this has created can be immediately experienced without having to be understood.”

“The visually cool and patinaed exterior contrasts with the warmth of the spotted gum inside,” says Holmes. “This is a deliberate wabi-sabi reference to the shedding bark of nearby river red gum trees, which is rough and weathered outside and rich and warm inside.”

Holmes worked with Finnes Building Group to complete the project which is set across three levels and replaces the remaining half of a 1930s duplex. It consists of four bedrooms, three bathrooms, two living areas, a study, a laundry and, in homage to Holmes’ love of Finland and its traditions, the residence also includes a plunge pool and sauna.
Its premium quality formply product Armourform was also specified following advice from Big River’s sales and technical teams in the early stages of the project. This early advice helped to dictate some of the key features of the interior design.
Based on a sloping plot overlooking the Yarra River, the complex site created some challenges through the build, but with a clear comprehension of the project’s vision and the courage and craftmanship to proceed, Finnes Building Group realised the overarching success of the project. “This was probably one of our most complex projects to date, it proved challenging at times but also one where the team got an opportunity to really demonstrate their skills. We are all thrilled with the end result,” says Stuart Innes, Director of Finnes Building Group.

“The specification of the selected Big River products enabled a distinct design language to evolve, whereby the black formply plays off against the tan spotted gum,” Holmes says. Additionally, the products enabled the construction of routed joinery pulls and door pulls in the cabinetry, which are also key features of the design, linking form to function and truly indicative of the wabi-sabi vibe.
Wabi Sabi House is a home that delivers a rich and immersive experience. Conceived as a whole, the dwelling is deeply connected to its site whereby interior elements are experienced via some condition of the exterior and vice versa. Dominated by sustainably sourced timber, the internal materials have been strategically developed to add depth and character throughout the space in a rich yet minimal application, culminating in an inner-city suburban home that responds to its surrounding environment and nurtures the principles of the wabi-sabi aesthetic throughout. ❚
