Imex Win Stand of the Year on the Gold Coast

Government Cash Back Available on New Airtight Solutions Dust Extraction Systems

Recently, Imex won stand of the year at the Mitre 10 annual conference on the Gold Coast with their display of quality measuring and levelling equipment which includes a comprehensive range for all tradesmen and women.

Correction

The Imex team is pictured here with Scott Cam from The Block receiving their award.

It was reported in our 2016 August/September issue that Ori Sion had sold his business. This is not the case. Ori remains in business under the name ‘Alpha Saws & Tooling’, selling a range of European products including all the range manufactured by Frezite.

Airtight Solutions has recently partnered with a service provider to facilitate cash rebates to its clients for the purchase of Airtight’s energy efficient dust control systems. For Airtight’s clients this means Airtight is now, under accredited licence, the only dust control company able to offer access to the Government Energy Savings Scheme (ESS). How it works – The energy savings achieved via an Airtight Solutions system is converted into tonnes of carbon and sold on the

‘carbon emissions trading’ market. The money then comes back direct to the clients post installation, in the form of a cheque from the NES. Stig Brixen, General Manager of Airtight Solutions explains; “At Airtight we have always strived to provide the best performing dust control systems of highest efficiency and reliability. This licensed accreditation is essentially rubber stamping our approach to quality dust control done right, while it provides our clients with a cash incentive to use our energy efficiency products. This is a win/win situation for all parties involved”. ● www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Kitchen Designers Have their Say Whether a new house or refurbishment, the trend is towards flowing transitions between kitchen, dining and living areas. To achieve this, manufacturers must offer customers a wide choice of design options including clever cabinet layouts, colours and materials that blend living and work spaces seamlessly. Let’s hear what some leading International designers have to say. More and more, the borders of interior spaces for cooking, eating and living are flowing into one another and becoming blurred. This is an issue manufacturers in the kitchen industry World-wide are continually addressing. Their focus is on the use of clever design; materials and colour in the kitchen and adjacent living areas. American home design expert Kerrie Kelly says “Bigger and brighter is the name of the game for 2017.” Customers are enthusiastic about natural materials and comfort in the home; expressed in the growing demand for wood décors with a natural look and feel. 8 | SupplierMarch/Apr 2017

Not only light-coloured woods but stone; cement; glass and leather are in equally high demand right now because they turn the kitchen into a living space with an individual touch. Bronze tones are popular in Europe; or architecturally-influenced concrete looks, modern-classic charm or contemporary solids. Designers say mixing traditional white with colours such as blue and grey complement and soften the primary colour. British designer Andrea Gilbert says “Popular colours are white, taupe and polar white and wood veneer is attractive to buyers with a healthy budget.” Wall units with glass doors follow the trend toward limitless frontiers in living spaces. New, integrated LED lighting systems for shelves and niche claddings create a pleasant ambience in the kitchen. With electrical appliances the trend is towards hidden solutions so the space can transition from a work area to a living space without the cold industrial look of stainless steel. Belgian designer Patrick Van

Moerzeke says “Almost 50% of kitchens are now hands-free. We like fronts that reach down to the floors so the base is no longer visible; it creates a more uniform look.” From hidden appliances to cabinets in bright, tasteful colours, homeowners want their kitchen to be stylish enough for entertaining, yet welcoming and functional for everyday use. Designer Xavier Renoux says “Open shelves are a must in France; we want as much surface area to prepare food as possible. A kitchen is considered perfect when the design has some refined details.” Dutch designer Claudia Klein-Zeggelink says “We like contrasts such as different cupboard fronts positioned opposite each other. We also attach great importance to generous and minimalistic designs with clear lines. Wall units are often avoided and a large free-standing table forms the heart of the space for eating and drinking.” Laminex says to consider the style of the home; it should all feel part of one big, super-stylish whole. ● www.suppliermagazine.com.au

What to Expect at Interzum 2017 Interzum will be held from May 16th to 19th 2017 in the German city of Cologne. A wide variety of innovations for interior design and furniture manufacturing are always on the cards as the world’s leading manufacturer’s flood through the gates. It’s the largest industry event for interior design, furniture and cabinet manufacture and leads all others by a fair margin. The fair provides a comprehensive overview of new technologies and design and the new hall layout provides even more space than before. There may be more space but a more compact allocation of floor space allows for shorter walking distances within the exhibition, always important after a

few days at a busy trade fair. The division of the event into the three segments; Textile & Machinery, Function & Components and Materials & Nature allows visitors at Interzum to find exactly what they are looking for as conveniently as possible. Alongside the exhibitors' presentations, every segment offers its own Piazza, providing an area which has been designed to focus on a specific theme and which serves as a meeting place and source of inspiration. In this year's Materials & Nature segment, there will for the first time be two Piazzas inviting visitors in - and they will again be conceived and designed by the interior architect Katrin de Louw. The theme for the Piazzas will be "individuality". In ancient Italian towns, wherever two or more streets joined up, businesses, cafés and restaurants would settle. To this day, people still

meet up in the piazza to discuss the latest world events, meet up with friends or conduct business. This is not unique to Italy: it happens all over the world -- including Cologne, at the world's leading fair for the furniture and interior construction industries' supplying sections. Each of the three themed areas at interzum has its own Piazza, all tailor-made to focus on their respective core theme. Peter Ippolito, architect, Ippolito Fleitz Group (Stuttgart, Berlin, Shanghai) remarked, “I find it very exciting that interzum is opening up more towards architects, as it is extremely interesting for us. There are a lot of innovations in surfaces, which play an increasingly important role in our work. In the innovative formats of the fair in particular, certain crossreferences and relationships can be discovered that generally are not so 12 evident in our daily project work.”

Christian Tschersich, architect, Lava (Stuttgart, Berlin, Sydney) said "Very often, our work is related to issues of well-being, such as the question as to how far an environment can have a stimulating effect on people. In this respect, the materials chosen are incredibly important in terms of colour values, haptics and acoustics. With its combination of trade fair, exhibition and special formats, Interzum is pursuing a forward-looking approach - the event revolves around innovation." With over 1,500 exhibitors from more than 60 countries presenting their innovations, interzum is the industry’s largest event worldwide. 12 | SupplierMarch/Apr 2017

More than 65 % of visitors and exhibitors come from abroad, making Interzum the most international industry fair. At its 2017 edition, alongside the industry’s big names, plenty of smaller, highly innovative companies will again also be participating. International exhibitors will be showcasing an exciting and extraordinarily wide-ranging mix of new technologies, materials and surfaces. As drivers of innovation and suppliers of the entire interior design industry they are important partners in the development of new products and design trends. Precisely because

of this wide range, not only do the most modern materials, components and manufacturing processes become visible at the fair, but also trends and visions for the design of future living spaces: topics such as conservation of resources, sustainability, upcycling and the increasing interest in digitalised living environments are all covered. Its flair for innovation makes Interzum particularly interesting for creative professionals. There are ten very good reasons to visit Interzum this year. interzum takes place every two years and presents the trends of the supplier sector, which

Becker

are the inspiration behind our living spaces of the future. Discover the best innovations from all over the world – clearly presented in three areas. World premieres, product innovations and pioneering concepts: interzum is the showcase for the entire sector’s new developments. Formats such as “interzum award: intelligent material & design” and “innovation of interior” will showcase the key trends. interzum is the world’s largest event serving this sector, with over 1,500 exhibitors from more than 60 countries. Since 1959, interzum has rightly enjoyed its worldwide reputation as a state-

of-the-art trade fair. More than 65 % of the visitors and exhibitors come from outside Germany. That makes interzum the sector’s most international trade fair. Appealing, informative and pioneering: interzum features an outstanding event programme. Centrally located and easily accessible, Koelnmesse is one of the most modern exhibition centres in Europe and the ideal venue for interzum. Cologne is an attractive metropolis at the heart of Europe with a wide variety of attractions for interzum participants after a day at the fair. And number eleven; after interzum you can visit Ligna the following week and all on the one ticket. Sylvia Leydecker, interior architect and materials expert, 100% Interior (Cologne) is all set for the show. She explains, “In the past, designs were limited by the materials available. Nowadays, the range of that which is feasible has expanded significantly. The technologies shown at interzum make possible evermore exciting developments, as they give us more options to work with a particular material or surface. For me as an interior designer, interzum and the fair’s special formats are essential because they map how we will be thinking in the future.●

Stay On-trend with Surteco The SURTECO Group offers `A One Stop Shop` a service that is unique in the sector! From floor to ceiling, from edging to surface – decor developments in different materials are perfectly matched with each other. Synergies in relation to flexibility, product range and value for money regularly surpass expectations. SURTECO interprets the latest TRENDS as follows:

RELATED TO BE ONE All things are in flux. Opposites cancel each other out, morph together and develop new creations, unique entities. Timeless materials are combined with functional technology, natural elements meld with purist forms, familiar trends are revived in new contexts. We call this trend “ONE”. The two directions ‘related’ and ‘to be’ combine tradition and contemporary concepts in different ways. This creates a special entity. Something that touches our soul and entices our senses:

14 | SupplierMarch/Apr 2017

Related Urban living and a well-developed affinity with technology and connectivity play a major role and define the trend direction “related”. Smart phones set the pace. Life is transparent, mobile and flexible. This contrasts with the yearning for heritage and the desire for sustainably manufactured or recycled products. Retro-chic comes together with the industry look and combines innovation with culture. The world of colour is witnessing a wide range of metal shades and some of these provide very effective accents. By the same token, dark woods and marble awaken pleasurable memories.

To Be The trend direction “To Be” is all about emotions. An individual’s own home constitutes a sanctuary offering the opportunity to withdraw into an oasis of calm. Authenticity, pleasing textures, artisan craftsmanship and tangibly beautiful materials play a significant role. Technology is only

a means to an end. This world features understated, light colours, a great deal of white, pastel hues, Country Style, Ethno Look, and woods with natural, calming textures. Yet playful, lively flowers and variations of knot also radiate a natural, fresh atmosphere reflected in this trend alongside nordically purist elegance.

Decors printed on polymer sheets or paper for all areas of application The paper-based finish foils from BauschLinnemann, Kroening and SURTECO DECOR make full use of innovative design and natural haptic properties to provide an appealing furniture surface with outstanding technical characteristics. Gislaved`s thermoplastic foils have been developed for particularly demanding furniture surfaces, hardwearing carpets and many other industrial applications. The home pages present an impressive selection of decorative designs, qualities and areas of application.

Thanks to decades of experience in the sector of the extrusion of skirting boards we succeeded in developing LED strips that set new standards both technically and practically. Thus we were the first manufacturer to produce LED strips that could produce even light distribution over a length of approximately 20 metres – from the first lightemitting diode to the last.

Ligna Tech Tours In Focus 2017 On the occasion of Interzum and Ligna, held every two years in Germany, many of our machinery and hardware suppliers run tech tours to coincide with these two events. If you are looking to add more to your trip to Europe, an industry tour could just be what you need to get some new ideas. The tours are run by the Australian subsidiaries and geared specifically for your business. See your preferred supplier as soon as possible to ensure a place. Tours are organised on numbers so as soon as your supplier gets enough enquiries the sooner they will be able to confirm the tour takes place. One tour definitely taking place is the Biesse VIP Ligna Tech tour so let’s take a look at this as an example; to get an idea what sort of things you are likely to experience on such an event. This tour starts off in Pesaro, home to Biesse. Other tours are likely to begin at the supplier’s factory so you can return to Australia immediately after the Ligna fair. Ligna is held the week

20 | SupplierMarch/Apr 2017

after Interzum. In Biesse’s case the first day is devoted to a tour of the Biesse production and afternoon tour of two high end kitchens and bathroom producers. You will see how they produce customised kitchens on demand. Their customers are able to mix and match elements from kitchen designs to create a new unique solution tailored to their household needs. You will see smart factories boasting several production lines and automated warehouse solutions. Two further visits are scheduled on the following day and a further two the day after that. That’s six visits to a range of diverse manufacturers that are certain to give insights into what is possible with new technologies and manufacturing methods. Visits are designed to showcase a range of manufacturing solutions and a wide range of equipment in an actual manufacturing environment. In the age of industry 4.0 you will experience what this means to European manufacturers and see

what the new technologies can do for you. Already there are numerous manufacturers in Australia embracing the new 4.0 technologies. For the Biesse tour, concentrating on manufacturing; one day has been allocated for the Interzum fair and the following week for the Ligna fair. Most of these industry tours allow you to extend the tour or only take part in some of the days. As an instance; last Ligna the Weinig tour looked at some companies in the UK, Poland and Germany and some participants decided to skip the UK and jump on board in Poland. The choice is yours and Biesse, along with other Australian suppliers will be happy to accommodate you special needs. It may even be possible to organise a personal visit to a specialist manufacturer if you want to see something closer to your own production. However the planned visits are all designed to offer the most value. Now is the time to speak to your preferred supplier and Biesse are already filling places fast. ●

Ligna 2017 Preview While AWISA is the best regional show for relevant product that suit your needs, Ligna is a whole new ballgame. Su pplier M agazin e’ s Phil Ashley visited the Ligna preview in Hannover early February and reports on what you can expect at this year’s show. It seems like only yesterday we were visiting the hugely successful AWISA show in Melbourne. AWISA provided a good taste of new equipment but this is always short-lived as suppliers push the boundaries of technology in the never-ending quest to be number one. Let’s take a look at the numbers. At AWISA there were 10,000 visitors and 130+ exhibitors on 20,000 square metres of floor space. These figures are approximate but will do for the sake of the exercise. At Ligna you will see 1,500+ exhibitors on 120,000 square metres of floorspace. Last show 96,000 visitors attended. Ligna has everything and this means you can really get a grip on where technology is at the moment. You will often see machine prototypes there and this may influence your future equipment plans. You can speak to the people who design the equipment and you can find out how the equipment is used in Companies that are similar to yours. LIGNA, the world's leading trade fair for machinery, plant and tools for the woodworking and timber processing industry, is gearing up for its 2017 season (22nd to 26th May). still about three months away, the organizers, Deutsche Messe and the German Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers’ Association, are already confident of an excellent turnout with almost all of the available exhibition space already booked. Exhibitors have given a resounding "thumbs up" to the new hall layout scheme, which in some cases has even led to exhibitors booking more space for enlarged presentations. Repeat exhibitors with a significantly greater footprint in 2017 include Biesse, Bürkle, Cefla, Felder, IMA, SCM and UNIMAK. But it's not just repeat exhibitors who have put LIGNA's organizers in an upbeat mood: LIGNA 2017 will also feature numerous first-time exhibitors, such as Vector Systems from New Zealand. Newcomers in LIGNA's surface technology display area also include many internationally renowned companies, such as Intergroup Plastik (Turkey), Unison (Poland) and IVM Chemicals (Germany). The Wood-Based Panel Production, Sawmill Technology and Energy from Wood displays will benefit from a strong showing of repeat and firsttime exhibitors, many of them global market leaders. With automation on

the rise across the economy, robots are increasingly finding their way into manufacturing technology. Their roles range from parts handling to component processing and assembly. High-performance controls ensure short throughput times and high plant utilization rates. System partnerships between industrial robot manufacturers, programming specialists and mechanical engineers play a decisive role in the implementation of robotic solutions. Interested businesses will find representatives of all these sectors at LIGNA. In its Factory Automation showcase, Siemens demonstrates with its open, modular Sinumerik architecture how easily controls can be adapted to an existing machine’s operational philosophy. Beckhoff Automation promotes its unified automation platform for all robot types. B&R Industrie Elektronik is presenting the Power Panel 500, computer-based controls that cover even the most complex robot applications whilst ensuring the highest security standards. Robots are increasingly found in woodworking. The world's first building with a robot-manufactured hardwood beech frame was erected in Gmünd, Germany in 2015. Minda sorting robots are working successfully in glued laminated timber manufacturing. With its cleverly designed, modular PUR laminate building set, Bürkle shows how widespread robot applications have become. Möhringer uses vacuum robots for automatic stacking in sawmill engineering. Robots have also gained permanent footholds in painting, grinding, polishing and assembling. LIGNA exhibitor MAKA, in collaboration with Siemens, demonstrates how easily robots can

be integrated into manufacturing: The "Run my Robot" option enables complete programming and operation of the robot using the CNC interface. The central focus of the upcoming show will be on intelligent concepts for integrated manufacturing across all links in the wood processing chain. Integrated manufacturing opens up major opportunities for companies seeking to develop new business areas, boost productivity and build their competitive edge. LIGNA 2017 will showcase the close interplay and ongoing integration of the virtual and real worlds across the entire value chain of the timber processing and woodworking industries. From our preview in Hannover, here’s a small snapshot of what can you expect from your preferred supplier. The cutting 2.0 success story began four years ago when the AKE SuperSilent saw blade was presented at LIGNA 2013. Just two years later, AKE took the unprecedented step of applying this concept to milling tools. The diamond-based 2.0 technology is impressive for grooving, joining and rebating tasks where chips are discharged behind the cutting edge. Last year, AKE presented the panel sizing saw blade 2.0 for machines with mechanical feed at the "Holzhandwerk" trade fair in Nuremberg where tool life increases of up to 70% were achieved. The technology will be on display at Ligna with interviews possible with leading industrial figures from companies such as IKEA and Biesse. Biesse continues to lead with their “Thinkforward” theme, a play on words with the fourth industrial revolution and the smart factory. At ligna this year Biesse will present integrated solutions that are complex but easy to use, allowing more production at a lower cost. This year Biesse will have 40 fully functioning solutions on 5,000 square metres of floor space. To put this in perspective, it’s about a quarter of the entire AWISA show. Biesse will demonstrate their forward thinking in collaboration with Accenture and Microsoft with a five-axis machining centre connected to the cloud. 22 | SupplierMarch/Apr 2017

An Interview with Raphael Prati Raphael Prati is the Biesse Group Corporate Marketing and Communications Director. Phil Ashley caught up with Raphael in Hannover recently and spoke about the recent successes Biesse has experienced. Raphael Prati attends every trade show and Biesse event worldwide and has a depth of knowledge that few people possess; not only about the Biesse product but about how it’s used in industry. Raphael is a people person and speaks highly not only of Biesse’s customers but of their own employees. He says “People are very important to us, not only our customers but we are very proud of the way we put

26 | SupplierMarch/Apr 2017

people in the system, like our new engineers. People are our most important asset and it’s our founder who is telling us this, building up the success of our story, of the families in Pesaro and the surrounding areas. He’s still there, Giancarlo works every day and still thinks about the people. He once worked not as an engineer but as a basic technician at Benelli (motor cycles) and then in his own company but he is very

much educated by life.” “Biesse is a pocket multinational company” said Raphael. “We are quite small compared to the big (retail) brands but the way we are structured is like Fiat. In wood machining we are one of the leaders and we are growing much more than the others (machinery producers), roughly 10% compared to last year and we are now about 600 million euros and this is because of the people we

have. This is not only because of innovation and new ideas but because we work as a team. We are also acquiring and building relationships with our subsidiaries around the World and they replicate the way we work in Pesaro (Italy). Raphael continues “If you think about size, Homag is the first group worldwide but a five star hotel is not valued on the number of rooms they have, it’s about the service

www.suppliermagazine.com.au

they provide and that is also our philosophy. It’s not our objective to beat Homag’s figures; what is important is to grow faster than the others. Last year we had an income of 519 million euros and we are near 600 million this year; the official figures will be available in a few weeks.” He said “We are investing in service to our customers; this is a key factor; the 4.0 technology; the customer support; the software; everything goes in the direction of making our customers’ life easier.” Industry 4.0 is the current buzzword in the manufacturing industries. I asked Raphael about Biesse’s commitment to the technology. He said “For us Industry 4.0 is something we were developing for bigger companies for many years without knowing it was called 4.0; it was software and automation in order to be more flexible on the production side for high volumes. Big companies produced high volumes of the same item but the demands of customers have changed and the big companies now need to produce high volumes of different products, one after the other.” “In order to do this efficiently you have to build an automated system and software that supports it and (Biesse) developed this for big companies like IKEA; and Apollo in Australia. There are a multitude of smaller companies that are hearing about 4.0 without knowing what’s happening so we downsized our technology to make it possible for those companies to be 4.0 compliant. First of all we have to educate them; from our point of view it’s not a www.suppliermagazine.com.au

problem, we are ready but small business may not be ready to catch the value of it so we need to explain it, promote the new ways of producing. A good example is what we do with our bSolid software to see on the screen what will happen in the machine. We have a model of the customer’s actual machine in bSolid so you can see a real simulation, not just an animation. You can see the interaction between the machine and the item that will be produced, including the tools and all the other dynamics” explains Raphael. “Our next step is to collect data from all the CNC machines because some customers are getting higher productivity compared to others and we can share this data with all our customers. This should not be a problem for any of our customers because the data is anonymous and it helps all of the industry” he says. Everyone should be able to benefit from technology and from Industry 4.0 in some way, even the leading companies should see some benefit from data collected from different levels of industry, even from sectors that they might not have considered. Raphael continues “Another part of 4.0 is predictive maintenance and this can be forecast from the data we collect from the machine. Replacement parts can be ordered ahead of time and there will be only a small amount of lost production as the machine is stopped for a much shorter time. We are not just trying to do that for the big companies but also the smaller companies with CNC equipment.” Raphael reveals “We’re going to be

a case history for 4.0 at an upcoming trade show here in Hannover at the end of April. The show is dedicated to software and automation. We’ll have a small CNC machine there at the Microsoft and Accenture stand to show what is possible for carpenters and small business.” At the RFID factory at Ligna there will be a demonstration of furniture production where a chip is placed in the panel that will guide the machine in its operations. This is heading to what Industry 4.0 is really all about; the product talking to the production line. “Biesse started with 4.0 at the last Ligna fair two years ago and has held symposiums on the subject; we started the campaign last year. In the U.S. it’s called

‘smart factory.’ Coming to Ligna this year will be an experience at Biesse; it’s not just a demonstration but much more, visitors can see and feel industry 4.0 and what it is really all about and how it can help them. We don’t just want to sell machines at Ligna, we really want to have our customers understand the potential they can get from it (4.0); it’s a different way of doing business. We will have our Australian team at Ligna to help explain everything and if you are in the woodworking business you really should be at Ligna; not every time but at least now and then. We can show our machinery anywhere but at Ligna, you are guaranteed a more immersive experience.” ●

Jurgen Koppel Moves to Leitz Jurgen Koppel has recently moved from the Homag group as Member of the Board; sales, service and marketing to CEO of the Leitz tooling company. He’s moved from the World’s largest woodworking machine manufacturer to the World’s largest tooling manufacturer. Phil Ashley caught up with Jurgen at the recent Ligna Preview in Hannover. If you use machines to process materials, this interview is a must-read. I asked Jurgen if it was difficult moving from Homag to Leitz. He said “Dr. Brucklacher offered me the position of CEO at Leitz and I could remain in the industry without going to a competitor and that was very important for me. I had twelve excellent years in the Homag group and knowing the industry; knowing the customers it was important that I was not in competition with Homag. That wouldn’t have been right for me and Leitz was a very interesting step.” Jurgen believes there are still great opportunities for the Homag group in spite of their recordbreaking turnover last year. It wasn’t hard for him to make the switch and he didn’t feel the need to stay for what might be bigger things in 2017. He said “There are a lot of things still to do, my old team is following the agenda and the new people from Durr are bringing in some fresh ideas. For me, the most important thing was getting out of the crisis in 2009 and of course we achieved the billion-euro target.”

28 | SupplierMarch/Apr 2017

Supplier Magazine's Phil Ashley (centre) with Edmund Mahler (left) and Jurgen Koppel.

Jurgen still feels the blue Homag blood in his veins but sees the step to Leitz as a very interesting point in his career. He jokes “I now have new customers from

Biesse, IMA and SCM; all former competitors. Thank God I treated them well over the years.” Jurgen feels that companies like Biesse “Have a very good technical

standard with a really fair price so you get good value for money, especially with their CNC machines. The Rover machines are a class on their own; the five axis www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Rover with the automatic tables; really, really good” he says. He feels that Biesse is a challenge for the Homag group but also feels there are areas where Homag is definitely ahead. Jurgen also speaks highly of the SCM group who he says “Are doing a very good job and also IMA with the very big production lines here in Europe.” We spoke briefly about Nobilia with the biggest cabinet production in the World and the fact that there are a lot or red machines there. IMA machines are red but Jurgen pointed out that Homag paint their machines red to customer demand so IMA is not the 90% of Nobilia that people think. However; he concedes that IMA do very well there and also at other large German kitchen manufacturers. To the subject of tooling; he believes that middle management of many companies don’t look at tooling as an essential. He said “The tool is the part that is doing the final work and very often the manufacturer look at the tool as only a commodity.” He explained that on an excellent machine with lousy tooling you get a lousy finish. On a notso superior machine with excellent tooling you have a very good chance to get a good quality. He feels that his main task is to convey the message that the tooling and the know-how about the process is essential for the manufacturer to use the tools at their best. Jurgen says “There’s a lot of money-pinching when we are talking about tooling and yes, costs are important but can you afford to have a poor quality on the final product? www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Can you afford that the life of the tool is not adequate and can you afford to shut down a 100-metre production line to change a tool that has become dull prematurely? These costs; nobody is calculating. We are talking about a few cents in the cost of the tool but dollars when it comes to poor quality, lost production and waste materials.” I asked Jurgen about the development some years ago in high-speed spindles to 40,000rpm. He said “Yes, this works but is it really required? We are setting up the tools and the machines and then the customer or the operator gets anxious and then turns down the feed speed. At Leitz we are now well into simulation with our intelligent tooling where the tooling data is available that the machines can use in order to give confidence in the optimum machine settings for the customer.” About industry 4.0 Jurgen believes it to be one of the most popular marketing tools and says “But what does it mean for Leitz? The intelligent tools need to have a clear interface with the machines and then the operator merely has to install the tool and enter the geometry and the material and then the rest of the information like rpm and feed-rate is coming from the tooling.” Jurgen laments “Very often the tool is worn out; nevertheless the customer is still running the machine. If he were to change the tool early enough you can save the tool. Running the tool too long is the wrong approach and this information is also available to the customer. It’s not rocket science but the customer needs to know this.” Leitz is working towards

giving the machine suppliers the freedom to use the interface developed for the Leitz tools. He says “We’ve done a little bit with Biesse and Homag, especially Holzma who want to put a tool library into their panel saws where the saw blade reads a QR code printed onto the blade when it’s installed to get the data about the tool.” And what is Jurgen’s advice to Australian manufacturers? “In Australia you have a lot of small to medium size companies and you are already doing the right things. What I can suggest is that you invest in tooling and automated machines and systems so the employees are not shuffling parts from one machine to the next. They can concentrate on their work.

Automation reduces the cost per piece. People are also talking about the cloud and this sounds very big but you can have your own small cloud in your own company by automating and linking the machinery and all the essential data is available for you to use. Also, using the internet for your business helps you to reach more people and your business will grow.” Jurgen has already been out to Australia as CEO of Leitz. He’s been here before of course many times with the Homag group so he knows us fairly well. If you’re going to Ligna in May, be sure to call into the Leitz stand, have a good look at their excellent range of cutting tools and technology, and say g’day. ●

Quality Dust Extraction Systems – What to Look For? In this article Airtight Solutions assess the right extraction for a small/medium factory with 5+ machines. A quality dust collector is a critical piece of equipment in your manufacturing process. When performing well it allows you machines to achieve maximum production rates, quality of finishes, long tool life, clean work environment and low running cost. In this article we assess the technologies and design parameters relevant for achieving quality, reliable low maintenance dust extraction. We assume you operate in the timber or joinery industry, and need a full factory extraction system. We discard technologies only suitable for single or small machine setups. These includes shaker systems, static bag units, cyclones, and all things cartridges (cartridges are NOT suitable for wood dust). The relevant options are Pulsejet & Reverse Air Flow (RAF) systems. Pulse jet dust collectors are a tried and tested cleaning technology for baghouses applied across industries. Pulse jet cleaning uses compressed 30 | SupplierMarch/Apr 2017

air and pulse valves to blast air down inside the filter bag providing good online cleaning. There are many applications where a pulse jet dust collector would be a great choice. However, regularly good design principles are not applied on pulsejets, making them unfit for purpose, as often seen in the timber industry. Reverse Air Flow (RAF) dust collectors have become the industry standard for the timber industry. Although a newer technology than pulse jet cleaning the RAF technology is a proven performer in the timber industry across world markets. RAF systems utilise a high pressure fan in the top of the collector to momentarily force a reverse air flow stream down the filter bags. This causes the bags to release any dust they are holding. This cleaning method is effective without mechanical stress on the filter material ensuring longevity of effective baglife. The cleaning system - An effective cleaning system is imperative in maintaining system performance and longevity of bag life. For Reverse Pulse cleaning it is furthermore important that the pulse valves and reservoir are sized correctly. If not, the system is starved of air/ pressure. The result is inferior cleaning and performance, a common occurrence in the APAC market.

RAF dust collector and RAF Inlet (pictured below).

The Extraction Fan is the engine in your system. It needs to overcome the total system pressure loss, while delivering the required air volume. The efficiency of the fan greatly impacts the running cost; the difference can be in the thousands per year. Understanding system pressure losses is crucial in optimal fan dimensioning. Pulse jet dust collectors have a higher initial pressure drop; around 1kPa.This is a design characteristic irrespective of design and brand. RAF dust collectors have a lower initial pressure drop of around 300pa. The higher system pressure means you need a larger motor to achieve the same extraction volume. The difference in power requirement between a pulsejet and RAF system, for a 20,000m3/h application, is about 11kW/h. Ask for the fan curve when buying a new system. Make sure you understand it, even when the industry salesman pitching it may not. Inlet design – A pulsejet should have a dedicated inlet chamber to allow the dust to separate from the airstream. Lack of a dedicated inlet chamber is unfortunately a commonly seen shortcut, taken to cut initial cost. Inlets located in the hopper section are not suitable for pulsejets, as they result in higher dust load reaching the filter bags. The can velocity disallows the dust to drop

down and separate, causing significant reduction in filter bag life, cleaning efficiency and performance. The large hopper of the positive pressure RAF filters allows for good dust separation and are, when combined with non-return valves, suitable options. Explosion relief - Timber dust is flammable and when combines with ample air (oxygen), highly explosive. A full factory dust collector should have appropriate and sufficient explosion relief and non-return valves installed. The non return valve prevents the fireball from an explosion travelling back into the factory via the duct work. The filtration velocity is arguably the single most important design characteristic in quality dust control design. Incorrect filtration velocity by design is the most common reason for poor performance and premature bag life in the industry.

www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Required filtration velocity is based on air volume, filter media type, dust loading and dust type. This should be assessed by a suitably experienced dust control engineer only. Economics – The true cost of your dust extraction system is the initial capital outlay and the actual running cost over its lifetime. The low pressure drop on the RAF system along with its gentle cleaning characteristics results in low power consumption, long bag life and minimal maintenance. Due to the additional mechanical parts, higher pressure drop and need for compressed air, the pulsejet system has significant higher running and maintenance cost. A saving of e.g. 11kW/h means a cost saving of

$6,050.00 per year. The savings on less bag changes is significantly more. In Summary Both Pulsejet and RAF technologies can be suitable, when applied correctly. However, as with most things engineering, the devil is in the details. A cheap pulsejet is rarely a bargain. A correctly dimensioned and well designed quality pulsejet is likely to work well, but comes at a high capital cost. An inexpensive pulsejet is likely to have been subject to cutting corners and yield subpar performance, high running cost and maintenance issues. A correctly dimensioned RAF filter system is not likely to be the cheapest option in the market, but is often found to

be the best value proposition, when considering its low running and maintenance cost. That being said, each application must be assessed on its merits and any respectable industry professional should assess your particular application before making recommendations.

EUMABOIS: A Positive Development for 2017 EUMABOIS is a non-profit organisation, aimed at promoting the European woodworking machinery industry, protecting its business interests and dealing with all matters of relevance to its members. Technical, marketing and fair policy issues are among the main tasks of the Federation. EUMABOIS plays a major role in the international market, hosts qualified experts to address technical and economic problems, and has created an information and interaction network involving the most experienced entrepreneurs in business. This year EUMABOIS changed their Board, appointing Mr. Juergen Koeppel (Leitz) to President and Mr. Luigi De Vito (SCM) to Vice President. EUMABOIS represents more than 800 companies. The year 2016 has been satisfactory from an economic standpoint. The International Monetary Fund expects 1.9 percent GDP growth in the EU, definitely a good result compared to recent times, when growth rates were

close to zero. But EUMABOIS cannot hide behind their figures: the world is growing at rates of 3 percent, the ASEAN area by 5 percent. This means that EUMABOIS need to improve their performance and the industrial equipment business is no exception, quite the contrary, it almost precisely reflects these macro data. Industry exhibitions are often top events but the return on investments (ROI) of these events has to justify the investment, too. Also in this respect, this season has been really positive for the industry. EUMABOIS would like to mention two exhibitions above all, both supported by Eumabois and representing a "turning point" for their market. HolzHandwerk in Nuremberg and Xylexpo in Milan were two key events in 2016. The former reaffirmed the importance of the German market or better the regional market in Europe, while the latter clearly showed that internationalization must be considered as an increasingly strategic business process, especially in Europe.

The picture so far suggests that European machinery manufacturers have definitely overcome the crisis that started in 2009. EUMABOIS think they should not ignore some elements of uncertainty that are affecting the global political and economic scenario and that might be a threat in the near future. The US election showed a strong desire for change in a country that is still the world’s biggest power and from the furniture production point of view the second biggest producer worldwide. Some markets in Northern Africa and Asia are suffering from local troubles that slow down the internationalization process, while Chinese competition is getting stronger. However, China, being the world biggest furniture producer, is a country of great opportunities but also challenges. So EUMABOIS expect 2017 to bring good opportunities, but at the same time the industry has to be aware that market success will depend on the commitment and determination to innovate and change attitudes that Europe has always mastered.●

sell and support TigerStop products throughout Mexico and South America. Headquartered in Vancouver, Washington, with an office in The Netherlands, TigerStop continues to grow as its products support the needs of manufacturers throughout the world. “We are gaining traction in Mexico, and to serve this promising market we have decided to open an office in one of the most cosmopolitan and bustling cities in the world, Mexico City,” said VP of Sales and Service, Jack Ragan. “Building a dealer and support network in Mexico makes sense and will become a hub for expanding into South America.” TigerStop was founded in 1994 by Spencer Dick, who as the owner of a thriving manufacturing business,

became frustrated with the inherent inefficiencies of his machine operators stopping to reset and recalibrate whenever they were cutting material to various lengths. Spencer also noticed that regardless of how carefully material was measured, the end results were always of slightly different dimensions. He founded TigerStop to automate the cutting process so that exact and accurate parts, whether wood, metal or plastic, would result each and every time. TigerStop, LLC is a global leader in automation equipment that is used in material cut-off, drilling, boring, ripping, positioning and pushing under the TigerStop and SawGear brand names. Headquartered in Vancouver, Washington,

TigerStop products easily integrate with existing equipment and increase the efficiency, material yield and profitability of manufacturers who process metal, wood or plastic. TigerStop has a second manufacturing and distribution facility in Wierden, The Netherlands, a distribution network spanning six continents, and product support in five languages.●

Häfele Group Increases Revenue The international Häfele Group for hardware technology and electronic access control systems continues on its growth path. In the past year it generated a revenue of 1.311 billion Euro (2015: 1.271 billion Euro), which corresponds to an increase of 3.1%. “When adjusted for currency effects, the increase was actually 6.1%. In light of the general global conditions in 2016, this is a most welcome success,” says Sibylle Thierer, head of the executive board (CEO). The 37 international subsidiaries (+3.2%) as well as the parent company and the six production factories in Germany and Hungary (+3%) all contributed equally to this growth in revenue. Nearly all the markets in which Häfele is active had a positive development and, accordingly, were able to increase their revenues. The USA and India saw particularly strong growth. Asian markets once again recorded above-average growth rates, just as they had done in the previous years. The number of the company’s employees worldwide has increased by 200 to reach 7,300. In Germany, the number of employees remained unchanged at 1,600. Given the large task of integration Germany is facing, the Häfele parent company enlarged their training offer by twelve additional apprenticeships for young refugees from nine countries. They are now completing a two-year apprenticeship to be warehouse clerks. Häfele has been recognised for these new apprenticeships by Detlef Scheele, the designated head of the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit), as a shining example in Baden-Württemberg and as a national example in the matter of occupational integration. Managing Director Sibylle Thierer, who has led the mid-sized family company since 2004 as the 3rd generation to do so, explains this commitment: “We feel obligated to make a contribution to the integration of young people.” As one of the largest companies in the region, Häfele has devoted a lot of www.suppliermagazine.com.au

effort towards the dual system of training for decades. But Häfele has not only attracted positive attention for their training and integration. In addition, the Foundation for Family Businesses in Germany and Europe distinguished the hardware fittings company as one of the best family-run companies in Germany. With 37 international subsidiaries and numerous other sales organisations worldwide, Häfele operates in over 150 countries. Today, the company generates 79 percent of its revenue outside of Germany. The products and services of the corporate group are used by the world’s leading furniture manufacturers, architects and planners, joiners/cabinet makers and dealers. The high level of international product and market expertise allows the company to create better product ranges tailored to specific markets. These products are then manufactured in one of the company’s six production facilities or in line with the “Häfele German Quality standards” at one of the locations of their 1,500 partners spread around the globe. In addition to market-oriented product ranges, the Group is focusing on the development of their own house assortments, available worldwide. Loox LED lights and the Dialock electronic access control system linked with guestroom control and smartphone keys provide the company with further opportunities for growth. These assortments make valuable contributions to additional convenience in buildings and furniture, and represent Häfele’s dynamic, innovative strength. “‘Thinking ahead’ is our commitment. Its essential components include the continuous interaction with new technologies and the acquisition of expertise in new fields,” Sibylle Thierer, explaining the family-run company’s motto. This claim is also reflected in the company’s interaction with the urbanisation megatrend. In recent years, Häfele has developed into the pacemaker of the industry. Following the

motto “More life per square metre”, new ideas are developed for clever hardware fittings and multi-function furniture with innovative design and an optimal use of space, making attractive living and working equally possible in a small space, both in private and commercial environments. Along the same lines, just a few weeks ago Häfele presented the modular “MicroApart 20/30” microapartment room model at the BAU 2017 trade fair and attracted the attention of investors and planners. This type of modular, expandable room situation is the centre point of interest in the international hospitality industry, which is currently in upswing. An organisation for the management of the international and ever more frequent cross-country project business has been built up by Häfele in the last few years and is now proving to be especially useful. The housing shortage has already become a reality in the megacities. As a result, solution approaches and concepts developed in Germany are happily accepted everywhere. “It is our aspiration to make the increasingly complex technology as easy and convenient to use and control as possible for our customers. With this in mind, we also see good opportunities for further growth.” The corporate group projects good market opportunities despite the many trouble spots around the world. “We are anticipating a mid-single digit increase in revenue,” says Sibylle Thierer. The amount of investment of the Group for the coming year will be approximately 40 million Euros. Risks continue to be seen in the volatile foreign exchange and commodity markets as well the growing number of trouble spots, to which a flexible and careful approach will be applied - just as in 2016.●

An efficient compressed air supply begins with efficient components, which is why Kaeser now equips all of its rotary screw compressors from 30 kW and up with super premium efficiency IE4 motors as standard. With the best efficiency values currently available, they serve to further cut compressor power consumption. Moreover, further refinement and optimisation of Kaeser’s renowned Kaeser Sigma Profile screw compressor blocks – the key components actually responsible for producing the compressed air – has helped boost specific power in rotary screw compressors from 75 kW and up, for example, by as much as 12 percent. The new DSD and FSD series rotary screw compressors

therefore offer significantly enhanced efficiency and higher flow rates which translate into tangible energy cost savings. Kaeser’s signature compressed air management system, now featuring improved 3D advanced control, perfectly harmonises the operation of all components in a compressed air system to ensure maximum availability and energy efficiency at all times. As such it acts as the central node and basic requirement for taking advantage of powerful Industry 4.0 services such as permanent energy management and predictive maintenance. Operator models, such as Sigma Air Utility, perfectly complement Kaeser’s extensive range of futureoriented compressed air

products and solutions. Not everyone whose business relies on compressed air necessarily wishes to take on the effort and responsibility of maintaining their own onsite compressed air supply. So for some, paying for compressed air as a service can be highly worthwhile: the amount paid is directly linked to actual consumption. Kaeser is also proud to showcase its new electricdrive portable compressors, which are as powerful as they are quiet.●

This year's LivingKitchen not only followed on seamlessly from its success in 2015, but significantly improved on the key figures in many areas. The next imm cologne will take place from 15th to 21st January 2018 in Cologne, co-located with LivingInteriors. From 16th to 22nd January 2017, the trade fair duo LivingKitchen and imm cologne invited the driving forces of the kitchen and furniture industry to Cologne. Over 200 well-known national and international suppliers from 21 countries presented their latest ideas and innovations.

imm cologne and LivingKitchen have achieved a record number of visitors this year. "We met our target and have broken the 150,000-visitor mark," said Gerald Böse, President and Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse GmbH, who is delighted with the results. Roughly every second trade visitor came from outside Germany, with foreign trade visitors accounting for nearly 50 per cent. "That shows we are right on track with our drive to internationalise the events," Böse continued. Dirk-Uwe Klaas, Managing Director of the Federal Association of

the German Furniture Industry, was similarly pleased with the figures. "The Cologne furniture show was a wonderful summit for interior decor. The German furniture industry is completely satisfied with imm cologne. It was the ideal start to 2017, which will no doubt be an excellent year for the industry," said Klaas. Of the 104,000 trade visitors, around 56,000 came from Germany and approximately 48,000 from abroad (an increase of 4 per cent). Within Europe, increases in visitor figures were recorded in particular

from Spain (up 25 per cent), Russia (up 26 per cent), Italy (up 19 per cent) and the UK (up 13 per cent). Visitor numbers from the Netherlands and Poland also increased. Numbers of overseas trade visitors rose, in particular visitors from China (up 5 per cent), South Korea (up 12 per cent) and India (up 5 per cent). A rise was also recorded in visitor numbers from the Middle East (up 19 per cent), with particularly strong growth from the United Arab Emirates. With these excellent numbers of foreign visitors, the two trade fairs will boost exhibitors' exports. ●

Peter Hay Kitchens Efficiency and Order in Mass Customisation In 43 years of operation Peter Hay Kitchens have always been at the forefront of the NZ kitchen manufacturing industry in the development of new processes and use of technology. The recent purchase and installation of a Biesse Winstore K1 panel handling system and three Biesse Rover B routers has continued that tradition, kept the company in touch with the market place and effectively future proofed the business for some time to come. The purchase represents a major change in production method for Peter Hay Kitchens which previously used a beamsaw set-up to cut large numbers of parts for stock which were then used to compile kitchens and other product as required. While this suited high volume production of similar products the company found they were increasingly being required to satisfy demand for kitchens and product that offered individuality. “The nature of the kitchen business has changed and our business has changed,” says company spokesman Karl O’Hanlon. “All kitchens now tend to be unique, even those built by group home builders in large residential developments require variance. Someone spending a million dollars on a group built home is going to want to have a say in the kitchen design.” The company’s client base has also diversified in the last five years to include group builders, retirement villages, furniture retailers

www.suppliermagazine.com.au

and architects as well as supplier merchants. A common element being that they all want to be able to offer their clients in turn, the ability to add their own individuality to the product whether it is a kitchen or range of furniture for retail sale. “A nesting set up allows this,” says Karl. “Our issue was a nesting set up that allowed us to shift and process the volumes of panel we required for our manufacturing contracts.” The answer was to implement a Batch 1 linked network production process that enables the company to produce at the speed of high volume stock manufacturing while applying the uniqueness required by the current market. There was no local model for the scale with which Peter Hay Kitchens wanted to do this and even when Peter Hay and his team looked to Australia, Canada, the USA and Italy no one was linking multiple routers to a single panel handling system in quite the way they wanted to.

The selection of the Biesse Winstore K1 system and a multiple router set up to do this, was decided following discussion with machinery supplier Biesse. “Biesse was a natural starting point given the number of machines we have purchased from them over the years and our confidence in their performance and service. We did look at other options to educate ourselves and make sure we were making the right choice but the scope of the purchase and change in operation meant our ongoing relationship with Biesse was always going to be important,” says Karl. It was in fact the first time for Biesse on such a configuration, 3 routers running off the Winstore K1 moving in excess of 400 panels a shift, the synchronisation of jobs, machines and panels was critical to the successful implementation. “We went through three different factory configurations and drawings with Biesse as we fine tuned what we wanted, until we achieved what we considered the likely best result,” says Karl. The Winstore K1 and the three Rover B routers were commissioned in June but the company did a lot of work prior to that to be ready for when the machinery arrived. Back end software was set up, factory layout and re-configuration planned, Robertson & Sinclair were consulted on tooling requirements and the old line was moved to the edge of the factory so that the company could continue to operate during the install. The install and commissioning took about eight weeks and Biesse Italy sent down three technicians who did a great job in setting up and assisting in staff training. The Winstore K1 stacks 28 bays of board of which currently 16 are white and 12 colour. From these stacks it assembles the next job for each machine in order of use (rainbow stacks), close to the router to be used, they are then automatically fed to the router as required. The Winstore K1 can do this assembly after hours or in any downtime while feeding the routers during an operating shift. 40 | SupplierMarch/Apr 2017

“It is all about processing panel and the Winstore K1 and Rovers are very much proving themselves in terms of movement of board and consistency of manufacturing. For us it has solved the problem of large volume manufacturing of one-off product.”

There is minimal operation required at the machine with the Winstore K1 being operated from the office. The result is a very fast line, good for Just in Time manufacturing, with minimal input required by floor staff and very efficient use of materials. It has an excellent off-cut tracking system which not only tracks the off-cuts but recalls them at a suitable time for re-use. “It is not just a panel handling system but is actually linked to production. Itemising panel use, enabling automatic stock control while costs can be measured against each product, giving us the most efficient use of materials and time. For 1 job or 500 jobs we know the exact cost of production,” says Karl. “We run the system on Biesse’s inhouse software bSolid. It integrated fairly easily with IMOS which runs our design and production planning. It could have been all done using IMOS but we went with bSolid as synchronizing the three machines was an intricate process and Biesse installers were naturally very familiar with their own software. The two systems work well together and we were able to configure them both to suit our requirements. Some training was required but fortunately we have staff who are pretty literate in this area.” “It has been a real success,” says founder and owner Peter Hay. “It is all about processing panel and the

Winstore K1 and Rovers are very much proving themselves in terms of movement of board and consistency of manufacturing. For us it has solved the problem of large volume manufacturing of one-off product. In the past we were producing large quantities of stock items. We are now only producing what we need and are producing a lot of it.” “The fully automated cell was the real attraction, there are huge gains around the automating and networking of production. It is not just about efficiencies but about efficiencies and order working together for a smooth and efficient running of the factory. Winstore K1 along with the nesting set up allows this as it can handle all the differentials in terms of materials, processes and product. I believe it is the way of the future and will be a cost competitive system for us for the next 10-15 years.” In what has been a major reorganisation of the factory Peter has been impressed with the Biesse role. “Biesse has been great through the whole process. They listened to what we wanted, they sold us the vision on what could be achieved and then they delivered on it - we are very happy with the final result.”● With thanks to Michael Goddard at Joiners Magazine for the use of this article and photos.

Nova Pro Scala: A Step Ahead Nova Pro slide technology, already proven millions of times over in practical use, is now progressing to the next generation. With the comprehensive new drawer range Nova Pro Scala, GRASS is presenting a system which offers the variability to harmonise with the contemporary styles of tomorrow’s living spaces. As well as impressing with entirely novel functionality, the innovative drawer system represents a true design innovation that sets new standards. This is borne out not only by the keen interest within the kitchen and furniture industry, but also by the recent award from the German Design Council honouring the GRASS product design. Despite being up against the best in the business, Nova Pro Scala succeeded in winning the internationally acclaimed German Design Award 2016 in the Industry category of the Excellent Product Design segment. Innovations are nothing unusual among the movement systems from GRASS. With Nova Pro Scala, the well-established Austrian company has nonetheless lent the term "system" a completely new meaning; the latest generation of the

double-wall drawer family ensures variability in every dimension. Nova Pro Scala provides the means for creating a wide choice of styles, functions and values, enabling the customer to cover every segment from entry level to premium with a fantastic palette of differentiating features. Based on the track-proven Nova Pro slide technology, the comprehensive new drawer solution creates maximum scope for creative styling as well as enabling efficient production processes. The name GRASS has long been synonymous with expertise in doublewall systems. The drawer side families Nova Pro Classic and Nova Pro Deluxe are both at home in all markets around the world. With its excellent running characteristics, smooth movement and extremely low opening forces, the Nova Pro movement system is the benchmark in the drawer sector. With Nova Pro Scala, GRASS has redefined the top flight of its slide technology across all market and price segments, and for modern solutions in living rooms, bathrooms and kitchens. Purist, clear and timelessly

aesthetic – chief developer Günter Grabher and his team have accomplished a drawer side with minimalist right angles: "We wanted to design an economically attractive drawer system that stands out for being extremely versatile as well as for its optimised use of materials." The development specialists minimised the space required to house the technology, enabling GRASS customers to make full use of the scope for creative styling. Even the tilt angle adjustment was optimised so that it could be accommodated in a drawer side height of exactly 41 millimetres. Covered in laser-welded, powder-coated steel, the characteristic drawer side is a unique trademark; and the complete drawer with its almost limitless design options becomes an individual and special experience. Thanks to its right-angled shape, the intentionally understated metal version can be combined with designer panels to suit all tastes, such as premium mineral resin surfaces or luxury real wood versions. The result is a unique palette of possibilities for giving pieces of furniture an individually conceived and unique profile. "This is

what we regard as perfect version management," comments Thomas Müller, head of the Drawer System Division. The multifaceted Scala range includes drawer solutions with heights of 63, 90 and 122 millimetres as well as a snugly fitting railing version and a new, stunninglooking drawer with a height of 186 millimetres. A special highlight of the modular Scala family is the largesurface Crystal Plus glass version. Product designer Stefan Ambrozus, who was involved in the development process, commented: "Maximising the clear view into the drawers is a very elegant solution." Whether fitted with glass or any other of the available design elements, the frame-sided drawer is a unique design statement. During the development of Nova Pro Scala, special attention was paid to simple processes in drawer production. The cabinet dimensions and drilled holes of the standardised Nova Pro technology remain the same. Prefitted attachment posts for the glass panels on the Nova Pro Crystal Plus make work even easier. This solution does not require any gluing, drilling or tensioning of the add-on elements. In addition, Nova Pro Crystal Plus features an innovative clip technology; the design elements can be fitted securely and without tools, just as easily as changing a battery. The modular front connection on the drawers guarantees maximum stability with minimum part complexity. The drawers and fronts can therefore be easily replaced. ● SupplierMarch/Apr 2017 | 41

This dramatically reduces the amount of setup time, and errors, in any moulding application. “The latest updates for the traditional machines market was well received at AWISA 2016,” says Lee Gabbett, Managing Director of SCM Group Australia. “We’ve seen record sales in the past for these revolutionary machines, and I’m sure that our 2016 offerings will see the same level of success for our customers.” The SCM Group has always enjoyed a welldeserved solid reputation in traditional machines, with design and technology that is second to none. ●

Striplox Sales and Marketing Manager, Dean Urquhart said Striplox’s marketing leading edge is due to its ability to quickly design and create new products fast to meet immediate customer needs. “Our intuitive design, manufacture and delivery speed is precise and rapid, making us a leading innovation company that meets real customer needs,” he said. “The new 180D connector has been specially designed for fast assembly of furniture, exhibition displays and signage with its simple flush or surface mounting application,” said Dean. “With safety in mind, there are no exposed screws, and it joins large and heavy tables such as restaurant benches, conference tables, boardroom tables and office workstations.

“It’s an ideal solution in the exhibition display and manufacturing industries to install walls and connect furniture rapidly,” he said. “The new Megalox offers many benefits to countertop installations. It is the partitioning solution for kitchens, offices, exhibition displays, toilets, bathroom and locker rooms, tabletop installations in kitchens, food retail stores and applications in manufacturing,” he said. “Like all Striplox products, the No 20 Biscuit is made from high quality heat stabilized glass reinforced nylon and does not swell or lose form like typical wooden biscuits.” The patented Striplox range fills a large gap in the joining and fastening market, with its innovative, simple designs and rapid ability to meet customer needs. ●

Spiral Cutters Accepted by Industry Makita has been a household name for every trade person since the 70’s and everyone has a 82mm Makita 1900B series, electric hand planer in their workshop/tool kit. In addition, the portable 12” Thicknesser has been an “old faithful” for many years with the only maintenance issue, the blade sharpening ! With the introduction of the spiral cutter phenomenon

for woodworking planers and thicknessers over the last 5 years, the retro-fitting of these awesome spiral cutters has been firmly accepted by the industry as a whole. We are proud to announce that retro-fit spiral cutters have now been developed for these two styles of Makita planers with the resultant improvement in operational performance and substantially reduced knife maintenance costs. ●

A Reliable Machine, a Reliable Partnership Technical back-up and service support is just as important as the installation of any type of machinery in any industry, and the SCM Group Australia has that covered. “When we need a service technician or spare parts, SCM Group Australia is quick to respond. We can’t afford to have down time,” says Joel.

When Action Speaks Louder Than Words Where do you go if you have a cutting requirement so extreme that only a machinery supplier with the ability to provide unique options can offer a solution? And what machine do you choose if you need to safely and accurately cut a sheet of solid aluminium that weighs in at nearly half a tonne? Well if you’re Action Aluminium, and your company vision statement is “quality without compromise”, you go to SCM Group Australia and choose the SCM SI400EP Class panel saw. According to Joel Greene of Action Aluminium, “The solid aluminium plate that we cut is 100mm thick and can only be lifted onto the machine with a forklift. So not only does the machine need to be strong enough to safely support the weight of over 450kgs, but the sliding table action still needs to be smooth enough for the panel saw operator to easily and accurately cut the aluminium

to size. And the SCM panel saw more than fits the bill”.

A Quality Cut The ability of this machine to cope with such an enormous weight is thanks to the 400mm wide sliding carriage, which uses SCM’s unique guide system that is adjustment free and is always accurate. SCM’s patented slide system utilises twice as many rollers as most other tables in the market. This increased number of rollers allows the loads to be spread throughout the system, making the table feel lighter. And what about the power needed to cut through 100mm solid aluminium and leave an acceptable quality of cut? “No problems,” says Joel. “The SCM SI400EP Class easily handles the demands of the heavy cutting requirements we have here on a day to day basis”. This is due to the unique construction of the saw unit assembly.

The SI400EP Class has a closed-type structure which grants rigidity and a complete lack of vibration along with a smooth vertical movement that travels on heavy duty linear guides that are mounted on the front and rear of the saw blade. Together with the torque produced from a 9kW motor, accuracy, stability and a consistent quality of cut is maintained.

The partnership between Action Aluminium and the SCM Group Australia has been forged over many years. The foundations of this partnership have been built on working together to identify the machining requirements for all the Action Aluminium branches, which ultimately leads to, in some cases, a specialised solution.●
