The Australian Government is proud to be associated with the innovative exhibition, So Long as You Move.

Drawn primarily from Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA)’s collection, So Long as You Move showcases video work by four established Australian artists: Daniel Crooks, Shaun Gladwell, Bianca Hester and David Rosetzky.

Galerie in Yogyakarta. I also want to congratulate curators Patrice Sharkey and Alia Swastika, and the staff at MUMA and Ark Galerie, for the high level of professionalism they have brought to this project. The Australian Government supports cultural collaborations such as this one through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the arts funding body, the Australia Council for the Arts.

I hope the exhibition will show Indonesian audiences the diversity and sophistication of contemporary Australian arts and culture. Using the arts to showcase aspects of modern Australia helps to build people-topeople links, deepen cultural understanding and add vigour to the relationship between our two countries.

Bekerja lintas disiplin sekarang seperti menjadi sebuah keharusan bagi seniman. Semakin banyak seniman bekerja keluar dari studio, menjalin komunikasi dengan berbagai pihak, menyerap pengetahuan dan bahasa-bahasa yang digunakan dari displin lain, lalu menganyamnya menjadi media apa pun yang baginya paling sesuai. Tidak ada lagi batasan jelas siapa pelukis, pematung, pembuat film, aktor, penari, pemusik; setiap medium bisa dipinjam dan meminjam.

Demikian pula gagasan kita tentang konteks budaya: semakin meluas. Para seniman memungut berbagai peristiwa yang kita temui di berbagai belahan dunia, menampilkannya tidak sekadar sebagai momentum, tetapi bagian dari sebuah narasi besar. Sebagaimana telah terjadi beratus tahun lalu, di sana-sini ada yang terasa asing dan baru, dibawa oleh mereka yang datang dan pergi, entah singgah atau berdiam lama. Dan dengan strategi artistik yang tepat, karya-karya ini memberi ruang bagi kita untuk menelusup masuk ke dalam, menjadi bagian dari konteks baru itu, dan menempatkan diri kita sebagai “liyan”.

BODY AND URBANITY IN MOVING IMAGES: FLOWING BODIES

Working across disciplines has now become a must for artists. More and more artists work outside the studio, communicating with various parties, absorbing the knowledge and language used in different disciplines then weaving it into whatever medium is most appropriate for them. There are no longer any clear limitations between who is a painter, a sculptor, a film maker, an actor, a dancer, a musician; every medium can borrow and be borrowed from.

Hence our concept of the cultural context is expanded.

Artists adopt the various things that occur in different parts of the world, displaying them not only as a momentum, but as a part of a larger narrative. In the same way as one hundred years ago, here and there are new and strange things, brought by those that come and go, whether momentarily or to stay longer. Now, the difference is that everything moves faster and simultaneously, so that meetings between our cultures are reiterated every day. Eventually, that which once felt foreign moves closer.

Now, we encounter works from Australia. Does what they bring seem foreign and distant? I’m not sure. For me, enjoying moving images on a screen, hearing sounds in a space that is almost dark, is like a sensation that takes me back to being a part of that faraway place. Although this is not my every-day space, there is a link that takes me there, making it a part of my search for myself. Perhaps these are dimensions that I have not often encountered in other art mediums.

Moving images seem to bring us different experiences through time and space. We seem to be faced with a different way of counting time, jumping like images that we have attained from the screen. Imperceptibly, in strong video works like those we see now, where the visual image absorbs us into questions about the world (perhaps I am going too far), we are driven to question the frequently subtle subjects that are offered by the artists.

PERFORMATIVITY, THE BODY AND URBANISM Because we are leaping through time and space, that which felt strange seems to have been bridged. Daniel Crooks’ work, A garden of parallel paths, speaks of the issues and relationship of city and its people.

Crooks uses performative strategies, that once again bring us to new dimensions of space and time, staging the ordinary people, capturing the gesture of everyday life. Crooks seems to look more at how urban society 12

establishes particular gestures and body languages based on the way that the city is physically arranged.

Through the corridors of walled streets, city people walk, waving their arms. Sometimes they even seem to fly a little. Crooks stretches the body by slowing down time, giving the impression that everyday behaviour is arranged, or choreographed. Through people’s movements, we can observe how citizens navigate the city, or even further, embody or stage their sense of the city.

The same approach with a different social idiom can be seen in the work of Shaun Gladwell, Guide to recent architecture: fountains (excerpt), where the artist moves around towards some buildings in the city (in this case Sydney), encountering a fountain. As mentioned in the title, Gladwell uses his body to draw the connection between buildings (as a representation of a cityscape) and movement. The movements are represented both by the body and the fountain, where we face a contradiction and a connection of binary opposition between the body of landscape (fountain) and the human body, and between the presence of absence. While he uses the fountain to capture the city landscape and its architecture, Gladwell also seems be interested in how buildings, perceived as still objects, have a particular pattern of movement, and show a light form of performativity. With the slow rhythm the artist looks as if he dances, so we can see a specific aesthetic idea in his movement, which is juxtaposed with the fountain as the representation of the aesthetic of the building.

between the individual and the collective in public space is perhaps impeded by the class separation, as a consequence of minimal public infrastructure. The upper-middle class in Indonesia do not experience the adventures of wandering the streets as we see in Crooks’ work, or cannot be audience to street artists with skate boards because most often their time moving through the city is passed in or on private vehicles, whether it be car or a motorcycle, and not really encountering city by walking and moving their body around. How often do we hear the whole of the busker’s song, without it being cut off by the green light? The bodily experience of the middle class in city spaces is largely limited to movements between their home, their vehicle and the spaces of their activities. Their bodies are not familiar with the experience of bustle as a part of their routine memories, which lessens the capacity of memory to read ‘the other’.

The boundary between the everyday body and the extra-ordinary body has been blurred; performance art now happens in public spaces—on the streets, in public squares; often, in many cases, there is no need for a stage anymore, and even there is no sign of this daily practice as ‘art.’ Performativity had become a territory not based on the notion of spectacle, but most of the time staging ‘the anonym self’.

VOCABULARY OF MOVEMENT, INTIMACY, PERSONIFICATION

Performativity in its broadest understanding also encompasses how objects are transformed into subjects that not only move, but also speak in the grooves of space and time. Bianca Hester poetically, but also with refreshing lightness, elucidates the narrative of how ‘hoops’ evolved from an installation element to move and build a dialogue with other objects in an indoor space. From here, these hoops move outward, exploring diverse spaces and encountering many different events, including meeting people, and becoming a part of everyday space. The spinning of these hoops not only provides a visual order that has Crooks and Gladwell see a strong connection between a sculptural sense, but Hester also finds language the body and space, particularly with public space in through sounds that have been produced through the city. Public space always displays strong tensions friction with different surfaces. In short, Hester creates between the collective and the individual, the social and a kind of vocabulary of movement, almost resembling the personal, the present and the past. This everyday a dance film, where she locates the hoops as if they behaviour then becomes routine, connecting the were the dancer. Dramatic events occur when Hester physical experience of a place with memories of various plays with rhythm, as this body spins more weakly activities that they have conducted, where their body and nearly falls, or when it reaches a certain speed. At has left a trace. In our lives in Indonesia, the tension Kevin Lynch, an expert in urban planning, conceptualised the mode of walking as displayed in Crooks work as one of five important elements of a map that describes urban cities: ways (roads, alleys, and other connecting spaces that people pass through), limits (walls, fences, buildings), districts (the division of the city based on function), nodes and landmarks.

Indirectly, as people cross from one element to another, city spaces form their bodies and, conversely, their movements form the city.1

the end of the video, Hester builds an ensemble when several hoops appear spinning, before falling down in unison. The intervention to the rhythm of the city, as we see the speed of how people move around, shows an interesting dynamic of people’s lives being contrasted with the movement of the hoops.

David Rosetzky’s work touches on the subtle and intimate relations between individuals. In this case the body is again a part of choreography departing from everyday gestures that are given particular emphasis, where movement becomes a language and a medium for the artist’s concept. Half brother investigates the possibilities of how we speak about small occurrences recorded by our bodies, and how these then re-appear after a particular time, so that they transform into a new pattern. From the perspective of category-conscious performance, things like this can be referred to as choreography. For Rosetzky, choreography is a representation of all of the body’s processes negotiating with the context of time and space. He shows three people in an ordinary situation, which seems almost like a rehearsal for a performance. Rather than seeing the final product as a whole choreographic arrangement on the stage, this work is seen on a screen that shows how the rehearsal itself becomes part of the performance. In many contemporary dance works, efforts to display the everyday or rehearsal process as a part of the final work become strategies to provide a ‘sneak preview’ about what will happen ‘before’ or ‘off the stage’. In Half brother the rehearsal becomes, in fact, the main, building a narrative and vocabulary from all of the scenes of buildings. Using intimacy as a modus, Rosetzky seems to stage emotion. He seeks to borrow everyday gestures as repressions of emotion; a performance of emotion with a flat rhythm with almost no meaningful dramatics, because he invites the audience to dive into trivial issues and small encounters that are remembered by the body, almost by routine. Hester and Rosetzky are interested in that which seems to repeat; as an investigation of pattern; from umpteen routines that appear to be the same, only changing in the context of space and time when the brain selects various occurrences that are almost the same, and chooses which will enter its memory.

I am reminded that for our society, speaking of emotion or feelings is virtually seen as taboo. We are not used to expressing feelings, and are taught to bury our response to what we experience in our hearts.

**** Performative art practice, in order not to refer to it as performance art, has in recent developments indicated broad possibilities in exploring the mediums and vocabularies of movements/events. With a situation this open, anything can be framed within the structure of performativity, anyone can be seen as playing in the performative space; does this in the end mean that performance art encompasses anything at all? In the context of Indonesia, with our long and complex history of the performativity of public, and at the same time the intense contestation of the use of public space, we have very different imagery of how the human body performs in public. In many of our video art works, the idea of connecting body and performativity is staged in the theatrical setting of an art piece, in which actor (artists) and spectators (audience) are part of a fictional scenario in real time, as can be seen in works of Krisna Murti or some of the works by Jompet Kuswidananto. There is also action performance, using everyday life situations, done by the artists themselves, such as works by FX Harsono. Different situations and different landscapes had formed specific body movements and gesture; and, also, in the case performance/performing arts, the influence of everyday traditional rituals still strongly remains. This kind of performative body can be seen in many performance works by Melati Suryodarmo, usually in a stage setting, where she interestingly shows a way to distinguish these rituals from everyday life reality, underlining the extraordinary aspects of those gestures.

With the visualisation strategies of these artists, we can see how the routine and the everyday are drawn out of ordinary situations, given frames, have their rhythms played with, and given dramaturgical structures so that they become more meaningful; they show how inter-subjective relations work, in both the conscious and unconscious realms. We can see how art can speak about anything, but that the strategies for processing the medium and the choice of perspective makes ‘anything’ no longer arbitrary, but possessed of a particular relevance and context. Enjoying art work from our neighbouring countries, we pull ourselves out of our everyday situations, seeing how awareness of the ‘other’ can bring us to a perspective in which foreign places are a stage and their new characters are performers. Using the right artistic strategy, these works give us space to infiltrate, becoming a part of this new context, and locating ourselves as the ‘other’.

A CITY IN MOTION

… the people who move through the streets are all strangers. At each encounter, they imagine a thousand things about one another; meetings that could take place between them, conversations, surprises, caresses, bites. But no one greets anyone; eyes lock for a second, then dart away, seeking other eyes, never stopping.

– Italo Calvino1 So Long as You Move brings together a suite of videobased works by four Australian contemporary artists that present the body in motion. Whether dancing, spinning, skateboarding or simply walking, each work explores ways in which the body performs in real space. The protagonists we encounter do not, however, traverse vague or undefined sites. Rather, it is the many familiar features of urban life – such as roads, pedestrians, crowds, civic centres, rooftops, house interiors and laneways – that provide the backdrop for the various rhythmic actions captured on screen.

This is fitting, since, as Elizabeth Grosz notes, bodies and cities are by no means casually distinct from one another: The city is one of the crucial factors in the social production of corporeality – the built environment provides the contexts and coordinates for contemporary forms of the body.2 So Long as You Move speaks to the imaginative potentialities of bodies and, equally, the latency of the cityscape; it is the city that sets the body in motion.

SLOW MOTION Cities connote speed; they are driven by industry and progress, making time an invaluable resource to be exploited. A garden of parallel paths 2012 by Daniel Crooks and Guide to recent architecture: fountains (excerpt) 2000-07 by Shaun Gladwell are decidedly out of sync with the usual haste of city life and its hurried commuters. Both shot in significant metropolitan locales in Melbourne and Sydney, each film has been slowed considerably so that we encounter the elegiac beauty of figures ambling through the landscape. In this way, Crooks and Gladwell recall the activities of the flâneur, who, through his many associations to leisure, idleness, time-wasting and urban exploration, has historically played a key role in understanding and representing the city.

Running between the streets that in turn lead into the broad avenues of the modern city, laneways are an integral part of the servicing and sanitisation of Melbourne, as it was dreamed by nineteenth-century surveyors such as Robert Hoddle. A garden of parallel paths pays homage to Melbourne’s idiosyncratic urban planning, with Crooks combining tracking shots of the city’s many laneways into a seamless gaze down these narrow slices of urban space. As the camera slowly pans across the many tapered streetscapes, passersby stroll in and out of the frame, with purposeful city dwellers such as office workers and shoppers re-imagined as listless wanderers.

Like Storm sequence 2000 – Gladwell’s seminal work which depicts him skateboarding on the edge of a concrete drop at Bondi Beach – Guide to recent architecture: fountains (excerpt) documents the artist skating through well-known Sydney sites. The performance takes place at Cook + Phillip Park; a civic space that has undergone numerous redesigns in order to displace the skateboarders who use it. Like many before him, Gladwell embraces the subversive possibilities of his environment, flaunting the prescribed function of the public meeting spot as he gracefully traverses his way through plumes and walls of water.

While Hester enacts the promise of sound in order to activate site, Rosetzky explores group dynamics and body language. Set in an artist’s studio with a small invited audience in attendance, Half brother 2013 is an intimate video that captures three men caught in a dance with a ream of paper. As the men interact with this material – ripping, stacking and re-purposing the sheets – they also carefully negotiate each other’s bodies and movements, as well as their audience.

Rosetzky is adept at composing stylised encounters that are complex and contradictory in their emotional register. Often solipsistic in nature, they tread a fine line between sincerity and superficiality. In Half brother each male dancer performs silently and relies upon his body to convey or externalise emotion.

Dressed casually as if for a rehearsal , there is a sense of informality and affection between the three men, however the spontaneity and authenticity of this bond is undone by the presence of onlookers; their intimacy revealed to be a constructed performance.

**** WHEN I MOVE, YOU MOVE A city is a sum of its parts. Or, more expressly, it is comprised and shaped by its populace. This is something that is made clear in the work of Bianca Hester and David Rosetzky who each utilise the body in their choreographed performances as a means of communication, cooperation and staging.

In Bianca Hester’s Hoops: sound tests, performances, documents 2011-13, the city’s potential is uncovered through its ability to produce distinct soundscapes.

Filmed across Melbourne in a variety of spaces such as car parks and community halls, this three-channel video documents a series of performances by the artist and a host of collaborators who explore the endless gestures and sounds created by rolling and turning steel hoops. Hoops: sound tests, performances, documents is emblematic of Hester’s practice which regularly sees her survey the manifold rhythms at play within the fabric of a city, whilst also generating her own rhythms (movements, materialities, actions) as a way to open up possibilities for how we might engage and occupy space. With emphasis on collective

In So Long as You Move the city serves as the platform for the flow of people. Sometimes languid and melancholic, other times forceful and rebellious, the bodies we encounter resourcefully respond to the environments and situations in which we find them.

Not limited by the laws of physics or the guidelines of urban infrastructure, the artists in the exhibition visualise how cities might be lived – how the body can be mobilised to reimagine the spaces we inhabit and the relationships we foster. These are new dynamics that are within reach, so long as you move.

An overarching theme in Gladwell’s practice is the body in space, updating the nineteenth century archetype of the flâneur by focussing on street culture and the ways break-dancers, skateboarders and BMX bike riders make use of public spaces.

Didirikan pada bulan April 2007, Ark Galerie telah mendapatkan reputasi yang sangat baik dan diakui sebagai salah satu galeri terpenting di Indonesia.

Asialink Arts adalah sebuah program dari Asialink, sebuah inisiatif dari Myer Foundation yang berbasis di University of Melbourne. Asialink bekerja sama dengan dunia usaha, pemerintah, mitra-mitra filantrofis dan budaya untuk memulai dan memperkuat kerja sama Australia-Asia.

Established in April 2007, Ark Galerie has gained a reputation as being one of the most important galleries in Indonesia.

Asialink Arts is a key program of Asialink, an initiative of the Myer Foundation based at the University of Melbourne. Asialink works with business, government, philanthropic and cultural partners to initiate and strengthen Australia-Asia engagement.

Ark Galerie provides a platform for experimental exhibitions, encouraging artists to continuously question and redefine their artistic practice and work with an interdisciplinary perspective.

Exploring social and political discourse has become an important part of an artists’ role in Indonesia. Ark Galerie aims to engage wider audience with current practices in contemporary arts, and through this connect them with contemporary social issues.

Most of the rising stars and established artists have held their solo exhibitions at Ark Galerie. To name but a few, Christine Ay Tjoe, Eko Nugroho, Jompet Kuswidananto, Ronald Ventura, Rodel Tapaya, Wedhar Riyadi, Ade Darmawan, Tintin Wulia and Tsang Kin-wah.
