attracted critical and commercial praise when nominated for Canadian R&B Single of the Year at the 2009 Stylus DJ Awards. This all isn’t without provocation though. The journey began so long ago, there’s no memory of life before music. At only four years old, Shannon sat down at a piano for the first time and sent shooting stars across the sky. Her youthful exuberance was a delight for on lookers as this young star was taking her first steps in following her parents’ path through music. Shannon’s mother was an avid piano player and learned songs entirely by ear, while her Dad played piano in a band.
“I actually don’t ever remember not playing the piano,” says Shannon through a buttery smile. “But once I got into elementary school and music class came along I wanted to do the opposite of whatever anybody expected. I took the baritone and tuba. I just wanted to see how far I could push myself.”
AnalyzeThis:
Shannon Alvarez .
– D’Analyst
This issue I feature to you is a face with a musical trace, a voice with lyrical embrace, followed by style and class like no other; the one and only, Toronto’s very own Shannon Alvarez. Shannon Alvares levitates through melodies and sweeps you off your feet. She carries you from dreams to reality and back, deftly infusing an R&B touch, with a Jazz like innovation and pop sensibilities. She is a mosaic of cultures, talents and inspirations who straddles the line between the flesh of love and life and the aesthet-

ics of modern appeal. Shannon exudes an unrelenting soulfulness that penetrates even the harshest critics. Her classic beauty is balanced by a modern collision of culture. And her light, enjoyable energy is contrasted by a desire to reach deep inside herself for lyrical inspiration. A myriad of Portuguese, Pakistani and Irish, this brilliant songstress hails from backgrounds ripe with pride, distinction and tradition. With such a potent family lineage comes a cross section of influences that make her uniquely suited to appeal to
music fans across boarders, genres and languages. It is her soul that touches all hearts, her mind that hears all hardships and her voice that transcends daily worries to uplift and enlighten her listeners. Shannon Alvares is the tingling in your spine, the buzzing in your ears and the love beating in your heart. Her potential as a hit maker was realized immediately when her debut single “Crush RMX” was picked up by major DJs across the country. The lighthearted single mirrored Shannon’s airy, flowing energy and
She ended up pushing herself all the way into the choir during high school. Shannon was dreadfully shy though and barely stood out among the group until one day, the teacher assigned her a solo. Her back stiffened and a lump formed in her throat, she knew she could sing but wasn’t sure if everyone else would hear the same voice she heard inside herself. But consistent with the unparalleled ambition she has shown throughout her life, Shannon accepted and dazzled the audience with her sultry delivery. This lead to vocal lessons throughout high school and her attendance at the New Conservatory of Music. A recital came along and she asked to sing, while playing the piano. It could only happen if she performed a solo vocal performance as well. Interview Q/A I admire your statement of ‘’wanting to push yourself and do the opposite of what people expected’’ and ‘’to see how far you can push yourself’’. With that said… Do you think you have pushed yourself entirely in the industry of music? Oh, of course not. There is so much that I have to accomplish and I don’t think I will
ever be finished. With every small step that I make, there is a bigger one ahead. Your mirage of Portuguese Pakistani and Irish is clearly displayed for ones eye but is there a greater of the three to which the public addresses your ethnicity? Hmmm, I’m not too sure. Most people assume that I’m West Indian when they first see me so I’m not quite sure how the public addresses my ethnicity. Would you agree that Toronto is and continues to populate with amazing talent of musical artists and remains the top city in the North America? Oh hell yeah!!! Lol. Toronto has some incredible talent and I’m so excited that people are starting to recognize that now. It’s definitely opening up the doors for the rest of us. How would you rate Canadian talent with an overall perspective in the music industry? In my opinion, Canadian talent in the music industry is at an all-time high! I know for me personally, the more success I see coming out of Canada, the harder I want to work. Are you looking forward to working with any of the main stream artists in the future? if so, whom? There are so many amazing artists that I’d love to work with. It’s a little difficult to narrow it down since I haven’t worked with too many other artists yet. So the list is very lengthy right now. Lol. Who has been your top 3 inspirations throughout your evolving into the music industry? Hmmm. This question always seems so vague to me because different people inspire me on different levels. For example, in terms of artists that I play to inspire me vocally, I’d go with Mariah Carey, Tamia and Faith. There are others that inspire me when I’m writing, such as Alicia Keys, Kanye and Death Cab For Cutie. Then there are the entertainers that I can sit and watch for hours like Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Usher and Beyonce. But the people that really inspire me to keep going even when things seem like they’re not going my way are the people close to me and the people I work with. I find what inspires me most is knowing someone’s story and watching them grow and work
hard at what they love to do. A few examples would be my mother, DJ Starting From Scratch, Jester and August. These people make me want to work harder. I’ve observed and admire all of them in terms of work ethic and it evokes so much determination in me. Has the late great king of pop music and icon, Michael Jackson contributed to your success in anyway? He’s contributed to music as a whole! But as an artist that has had a huge influence on me, yes, he has definitely contributed to my success. Where do you see yourself in the music industry in the near future? What can we look forward to from you? There is a lot coming up for me! My new single has just been released. It’s called “Got Better” feat. August. The track was written by August and myself and produced by August. I’m also working on an album and a mixtape. So there is a lot in the works right now. You’ll definitely be seeing a lot more from me before the end of the year. Can you tell us a bit about the life of Shannon Alvares outside the music? The life of Shannon Alvares.. haha.. it’s A LOT of fun! I just recently joined a few teams (volleyball and ringette). I like playing sports and video games.. I’m not very good at them, but I have a blast losing! LOL. Hmm.... I like trying new things so there is always something exciting going on with me. I try to blog as much as I can about my life outside of music. So if you want to know more, just visit: http://www. shannonalvaresmusic.blogspot.com. What has been most difficult to overcome throughout your career in music? Wow, that’s a very good question. I think the most difficult has been trying to get people to take me seriously as an artist. It’s definitely a lot better now, but when I first released “Crush”, I guess a lot of people were not sure what to make of me and created their own impressions of who they thought I was. I suppose that’s normal in this industry, but it still gets a little frustrating. I figure, as long as I remain serious about what I do, that will eventually come across to everyone else. I think it also helps having communication tools such as Twitter and blogs as it allows you to express who you are to the public first hand.

Unleash theFemale Beast –Foxy Brown
style. “I was one that was never afraid to pump my sexuality”. Foxy’s Voice was in high demand and she struck a huge biding deal dilemma. She finally settled down signing to Def Jam Records in 1996. She also later joined the hardcore firm with Cormega, Nas, and Az, and crowned as the first lady of the group. This created foxy creditability to classify her as the female beast. Foxy established herself to be a tough girl from the start in the industry, giving it her all on stage and in the studios. Creating her first debut album, “Ill Na Na” on November 19, 1996, it basically illustrated her teenage interests; which were fashion, men, the mafia and sex. The single “I’ll Be” featuring Jay Z was ranked number 52 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop in 1996, going platinum. Foxy’s Innovative voice and swagger only led her to great amounts of success with her rap career. In 1999 Def Jam Released Chyna Doll, 2001 Broken Silence and last but not least in 2008, Foxy came out and released, “Brooklyn’s Don Diva”. Brooklyn’s Don Diva was a crucial album because it marked the rebirth of miss Foxy Brown and her musical career. In 2005 Foxy faced a tremendous down turn- on May 23, Foxy woke up to realize she had a severe sudden sensor neural hearing loss. “I ran outside to my truck and honked the horn. Nothing. I ran back inside and dialed a number on the phone. Nothing. Then I started breaking down in tears and screaming and I couldn’t even hear myself scream. That’s when I knew there was a problem.” The condition is stated to only effect 1 in 10 000 contributed by a viral infection.
Foxy Brown Returns
know what time it was.
– Joel Persaud
Born on September the 6th 1979 in Brooklyn, New York, This American/Trinidadian was considered the biggest and possibly the nastiest female artist out. “If he don’t do the right thing like Spike Lee/Bye-bye wifey, make him lose his Nikes/ Hit the road!” Foxy raps in her teenage prime, off of her first album, “Ill Na Na”.
From the streets to the airwaves; the female voice is now known to be a dominant, powerful, and a sexy force seducing the listeners into an aroma of sassiness. Branching out in the 90’s, a wave of female hip hop artists started to get heard out loud and clear with respect from hip hop feminists, such as; Queen Latifah who preached the worth and equality of a woman. Hip Hop tended to downgrade woman in general terms referring to them as “b*tches and h0es” portraying a convincing image of that with sexuality and stereotypical images in videos and in audio. If your consistently being called a B*itch you got to be the baddest, you have to become a hard body to intimidate the men while still remaining foxy.
Named after a Pam Grier film, Foxy Brown got introduced to the music scene at a really young age. At the age of sixteen, Foxy won a talent contest in the Brooklyn neighbourhood which grabbed the attention of producers like Track Masters who were intrigued with foxy’s style and it was in their best interest to put young Foxy on the music scene. Throughout her prime years, Foxy was featured on tracks with LL Cool J, Toni Braxton, and Jay Z in 1996. Her career grew tremendously after releasing the collaborative hit singles.
Inga Marchand, also known as Miss Foxy Brown, was one of few females that broke open the barricade entering the hip hop scene with her passion and aggression to let the world
Being young, black, and beautiful, Foxy broke the seals of the industry approaching music with her own raw and sexy
09
Although this seems harsh, it only led to more setbacks in Foxy Brown’s career. On August 22, Foxy was ordered to prison in terms of allegedly assaulting her neighbor with a BlackBerry cell phone and violating her probation. Foxy was incarcerated for 8 months in New York’s Riker Island Prison with her hearing loss in addition to it all. It looks like a lock up will either make or break ones soul but in this case, Foxy feels that it was more of a self defining moment for her and getting in touch with her true self. “At first I was saying eight months of mine was wasted just sitting in a jail cell, like, for what? But I feel like divine intervention is powerful and I think that God did that for a reason, I am actually happy that that happened because I got a chance to really step right out of Foxy and get in tuned with Inga and really just refocused like okay, this is what I need to do. I need to get my priorities straight,
okay you have made mistakes, you messed up like fix it, you know what I mean and I’m the first to admit that I’m imperfect, complicated, flawed like everyone else- I’m human. So I’m just embracing my maturation and just fostering my growth was the most important part of my incarceration.” This was said outside New York’s rikers island moments after her release. So what’s new with Foxy besides the rumours of dating Spragga Benz and Rick Ross? “I’m just going to come out and kill everything in sight.” Foxy insisted on a radio interview on 99 Jamz Miami in Florida March 6, 2009. Foxy lately was featured on Rick Ross’s “Deeper than Rap” with a single called, ‘Murda Mami’. She highly commends new female rap artist, Nikki Minaj and wants to do future projects together. It’s also said that Foxy will be hosting a new reality television series and will also be on the verge of releasing another album in the future. Look out fans and innocent bystanders because the beast is back!
one on one with djflash - James Borbath: daily writer in the Dino Nation Blog that is part of The Score Sports Federation. You may know DJ Flash even if you have never seen him in a club. He is the man who is the DJ on The Score ‘s Court Surfing show. That also explains how the guy who writes about basketball in this magazine is interviewing a DJ (Alex a.k.a. DJ Flash). I had got an invite down to Court Surfing a couple of times and DJ Flash was one of the people I got to meet. He DJ’s all across Canada, not just here in Toronto. I was able to hook up with him over this NBA off-season to talk music, the DJ biz and a little basketball too. He is much more than just a DJ, he runs his own company called Across The Board Entertainment which reps a whole crew of DJ’s and some artists as well. I hope you enjoy our conversation: James: Here is my first question and it takes into account both music and basketball. The Raptors will be getting ready to go soon. Fans always make a big deal of what the song will be for the team’s intro at the A.C.C. So if they pick up the phone and call you and say, ‘pick the song for the intro,’ what would it be? DJ Flash: That’s tough! I can’t narrow it to just one. I’ll give you two. Go with T.I., “Bring ‘Em Out” or Jay-Z, “Run This Town.” James: Now I met you a couple of times down at the show Court Surfing on The Score. How do you end up becoming the DJ on a basketball show? DJ Flash: It happened pretty much through connections. I met DJ (Bennett) and brother Anton in London at a place I play at. I passed him a couple mix tapes. Initially, DJ was just looking for some beats for stuff on The Score. Not sure if people know this, but a portion of the beats you here on The Score especially in DJ’s segments is music composed and produced by an artist that we manage, Mantis (His Debut LP “Still Life” is in stores now). Basically that is what got the ball rolling, then DJ said he had an idea for Court Surfing for next year (this was obviously last summer). DJ asked what do you guys think about DJing on the show? I was like of course! It was a great way to get some exposure, and I love basketball so that is how that all came about. James: I was going to say that… In terms of exposure to being on a weekly TV show, it had to be a great thing and a big thrill for a DJ to have a platform like that. DJ Flash: Definitely, we benefited from getting other jobs and
11
gigs and other stuff as well. We have got to travel the country- I was just recently out on the west coast and going up to Montreal and Ottawa on tours up there. It has definitely been good luck for us. James: In getting to travel across the country, and go to all of these places, is it safe to say that things are going well? DJ Flash: Things are going well for sure; I have no complainants. Obviously, I am never satisfied… I’m always working hard to make things bigger and better for not just me but the folks I manage. Across the Board Entertainment manages 7 DJ’s currently as well as a couple of artists. So I am always looking to make things better not just for me, but for everyone. Flash and his company represent the following People: DJ Makem, DJ Bounce, DJ Soundbwoy, DJ Allie V, Black and Yellow as well as artists, Mantis (who was mentioned earlier) and Jessica Kaya. He runs Across the Board Entertainment with Johnny Lacoste and Tripl-b. They are always looking for new talent so if you are interested you can get in touch with them at: ypervaiz@acrosstheboardent.ca. James: Let’s take a step backwards. You have had some success but how did you get started in the DJ game to begin with? DJ Flash: I got started the same way as most, playing records in my basement. I am a hip-hop guy and have always been a fan of that type of music. I was actually listening to DJ Mastermind on the old Energy 108 and he kind of inspired me to play hip-hop records and to DJ. From there it has just been all about hard work and making those connections. It can be a struggle being based in Canada and trying to make it. But it is definitely worthwhile and fun. I have no complainants at what DJing and music has done for me.
DJ Flash: I am very excited. James: So from your prospective, give us your thoughts on what you expect for Toronto’s basketball squad this season. DJ Flash: I am realistic and hopefully a 4 or 5 seed for the Raps in the East. I think that is possible. The one thing I am concerned about is there are 9 new guys and they got to gel. Hopefully we don’t fall to far behind before all of that happens. Chris is going have a big year! Well, he’s got to right? Being on a contract year, so you have to expect he is going to be motivated to play really well. Other then that… looking forward to having Jarrett Jack as a back up point guard. James: The big question for all Raptor fans is, will Chris Bosh stay or go in 2010. What are your thoughts on that? DJ Flash: I want him to stay...I think he’ll stay... I hope he stays. James: Let’s shift back to music. Given that you travel across the country, what are some of the differences music wise? DJ Flash: I feel that the West Coast is a little bit more laid back. They definitely play a little different from how we do here in Toronto. Musically, everything is moving to a more top 40 kind of thing. Which isn’t really my thing necessarily. Musically, everything is kind of getting mashed up together with all different styles of music and stuff like that. Montreal is a good city to DJ in ‘cause it is a musical city. They real know their music. It is more comparable to Toronto than say, Vancouver.
DJ Flash: For sure, when you look at the demographics of plays and watches basketball and who listens to hip-hop music you can definitely see the correlation there.
James: Ok so when you are working and are taking requests, what is the one song you hope no one says and the one song you hope that someone says to play?
James: Let’s pause from the music for a second and talk a little ball for a minute. Raptors have made some big changes and moves. As a Raptor Fan, are you excited for the upcoming season?
DJ Flash: The one song I hope no one says is Beyoncé, ‘Put A
James: Hey, as someone who writes about basketball in Canada- where the biggest sport is hockey, I can relate to that. You mentioned being a basketball fan and I thought writing for this magazine on the sport makes sense because of the natural crossover between the 2 worlds of Hip-Hop and Urban Music and the sport of basketball. You agree with that?
Ring On It.’ That is the one song I hope to never ever have to play again but I know I am going to have too. The one artist that I love to play is Drake. He is really killing it right now. His song with Eminem is crazy! So I hope people ask for that so please do and I will play that for you. James: Now you mention Drake. I notice in the people that read my basketball stuff that he seems to be popular with people. Not being any kind of a music expert here, can you offer me some help as to what makes this guy so good and popular with folks? DJ Flash: First off, for people he is from Toronto so you want to support your own. Secondly, just lyrically I think that guys can relate with him and the girls love him. There are very few artists that can get respect and love from both sides. The beats in his tracks are pretty good too. He selects good beats. James: Who are some of the people that have had an influence on you and what you do? DJ Flash: DJ Mastermind who I mentioned earlier, he is out in Calgary right now. DJ AM who just passed away. He changed the landscape of the DJ biz. If you’re a DJ, you can’t really say that he didn’t influence you just a little bit. He is a pioneer as far as the digital DJ world goes. He changed things for everyonehe is like the Lebron James or Michael Jordan of DJing. Definitely, the old school New Yorkers like Funkmaster Flex and Kid Capri in me wanting to DJ. The way they rock the party and throw down a show is incredible! Jazzy Jeff as well in the same way. James: The whole business really seems to have change with the advancement of technology in the last 10 years. Can you shed some light on that? DJ Flash: It is a whole new ball game now. I feel it is a lot easier for DJ’s that are coming up to try and get into the clubs or make mix tapes or whatever they want to do. I don’t think it’s a bad thing now that everyone has the same music… It forces DJ’s to be more creative. Be it if they are in a club or on the radio mixing, it allows people to expand their horizons be it remixing or creating their own music.
Basically you don’t have to be pressing up on vinyl anymore. I miss vinyl; I have like 7000 records in my house. But at the end of the day, it is a lot easier now than it was easier on back. Any type of music is acceptable now so it is great in that way. The addition of laptops and MP3s has really changed the way things are done now and it is great! Here is a summary of a few other things we chatted on briefly: Some other stuff we got into was how some folks in the NBA have tried to get into the music business like Ron Artest and others. DJ Flash’s take on that is that, they are good at what they do on the floor and they should stick to that. If anyone has heard Ron Artest, Shaq or a few others I would say that is sound advice. If you were thinking DJ Flash is in reference to D-Wade, he is not, he just liked the name and ran with it. I asked if he ever gets out, where would he go if he were not working. He said pretty much he is working 24/7 so that never happens much. If anything, in his free time he will try and catch a basketball game with friends. His number one tip if you want to get into the whole DJ game is, to love music and if you do not, you are doing it for the wrong reasons. I asked if he ever thinks that Hip Hop and Rap Music can be as good as it was when it first started. He said he hopes so but probably not. He holds out hope that some of the new artists like Drake can take their music back to that kind of style. Alex a.k.a. DJ Flash was really fun to talk with. If you want to catch him doing his thing locally he can be found every Saturday in T.O at Rockwood on 31 Mercer St. He also plays regularly in the London area. If you are looking to get in touch with him to rock your party or event, you can get in touch with him via e-mail @ djflash05@hotmail.com and he is on Twitter at @DJFlash05. I really enjoyed stepping out of my basketball world and doing something a bit different. Hope you enjoyed our chat. I have listened to some of DJ Flash and I like it a lot. He is a great DJ and a great guy as well. Wish him all the best and thank him for taking the time to talk with us here in The Industry Magazine.

Watch Out forLANEZ - Marcus McLean
Young and Talented: Lanez Stops Traffic. I arrive at the Office/Studio of Fred E. Fame, noted underground hip-hop event producer and promoter to interview Lanez, a fast rising name in the Canadian hip-hop scene. I’m unsure what to expect, I had seen Lanez perform a few times, but I wasn’t sure if his on-stage charisma and witty lyrics would equal to a great off-stage interview. We’ve all seen the video of musicians and athletes who are dynamic conduits when they are performing, but turn into stumbling versions of Sarah Palin, babbling words their managers and coaches had drummed into their heads over and over again, when asked real questions. I was led into the photography studio which also doubles as business office; Lanez was already there, playing a new beat over and over again, working out his lyrics. He pauses momentarily to give me some props and as I explain that I need a moment to settle in and set up my laptop, he returns to his writing, playing the beat again. I chose to wait a few extra minutes to watch the young virtuoso at work, to get a feel for him, and try to figure out who exactly this rapper/singer is. A Fred E. Fame Entertainment staffer walks in and we exchange a few words and a quick joke. Lanez looks up from his work, a voice from outside of the room shouts a verbal jab at Lanez telling him to get back to working on his rhymes saying, “you need to concentrate on your rhymes young blood… get to figuring out what rhymes with orange”… the quick spat of laughter is immediately changed to ooohs as Lanez doesn’t miss a beat and replies “door hinge”. I think I’m ready to start this interview. What is your government name? Daystar Peterson. Why Lanez? Lanez was a name that was given to me as a child, I never liked waiting for lights and would be running across the street at all times, and an older dude Hakim, I think he may have been the apartment super… gave me that name… he would keep an eye out on all the kids in our complex, and he started calling me Young Lanez, and telling me to stop running around in the streets.
What other stage names have you used in the past? I had so many… too much to count (he chuckles) even after the Hakim thing… I didn’t go right away to Lanez… it was Spades, Nova…umm…. Jay Sparks, Tory Lanez, and now just Lanez… they may have been others but those don’t matter. What/Who inspires you? I inspire me… and everybody in my immediate family, we all have a musical talent… well the sixth one is more into design, but growing up around all that creative energy is what gives me my inspiration…. matter of fact scratch that one... I can give you a better answer… the reason why I say I inspire me… is because when I came to Toronto I had nothing… no house, nothing... I didn’t even have a paper or pad, no rhyme book… I mean I had nothing when I got here…. It’s my successes that inspire me…. What I’m saying is, if I can do it… anyone can do it… I’m inspired by seeing how far I’ve come… I’m not all the way THERE yet, but I’m excited to see where I’m at right now… (pause) you have to live, to inspire yourself… What was the first hip-hop album you bought? Reasonable Doubt… I wanted to buy that AND get Illmatic… but I didn’t have enough money so I bought the Jay Z… but my second album was Nas. I pause to collect my thoughts, and as I type… I hear the hushed forced whispers of Lanez putting in work on his track fine tuning his lyrics… I complete my thought and interrupt him… he is almost in a trance for a split second then returns to the moment Who are your musical influences? (I ask again) Its kinda weird a lot of rap artists only list of other hip-hop artists.. but I try to listen to a lot of other things… but for me… its gotta be first… Andre 3000... then MGMT, Daft Punk, Jay Z... and of course myself (jokingly)… actually take that out… that sounds kinda cocky… I would have to say Big L… for sure! What would you be doing if you weren’t rapping? Honestly I don’t know… but I think I’d definitely be doing something in music… maybe drumming … I don’t think there was a time in a past, my present or my future life where I
16
Watch Out forLANEZ
wouldn’t be involved in music. How old are you. 17… just turned. What do your parents think about your musical aspirations? My mother died… actually it was a couple months before I became a musician… and my Dad… he just sometimes says “Wow”… he’s always been creative… he was also a performer when he was younger… He’s really proud… I’m sorry to hear about your mother passing, but I have to ask… how do you think losing her has influenced your music. (pause)… I would have to say… it has made it better… with all due respect to my moms… I feel like she’s always with me in some ways… (pause) What I like to do is paint pictures with my music… my moms would say “if you gonna do something, do it the best of your ability and when you tell a story… paint a picture with it”… If that makes any sense… (he takes another long moment) I have tried to look at the loss as a blessing in disguise… Its taught me about pain… and channeling that pain and emotion into my work to help create really vivid images… its been f*cked sometimes… but … I try to use it as fuel in someway to give me strength. How old were you when you realized you wanted to be a musician? 9 What happened I was playing Madden, against one my cousins… who was whooping my *ss, I was getting angry I wanted to fight… but I couldn’t deal with him then he was bigger than me… so I went into the garage… and started to stomp and cuss out loud, this started me rhyming and coming up with words about my cousin… after a little while I was really getting into it… and I started to think… I could really be like all those dudes on stage who were making it big back when I was a kid… after that I started writing 7 songs a day for the whole summer… they weren’t the best songs… but I kept writing them…. That’s when I realized I had the knack for it. Do you play any other instruments. Piano… I’m somewhat with the drums but I play the piano mostly. How would you classify your music In one word… different. Explain. I would explain it as… ummm… I feel what comes out of my head isn’t the same as other people… whatever you’re talking
17
about, I want to be on something else… I think my influences from other musical forms are what makes me say… just… different. While I was reading your bio, I saw that you moved around a bit when you were younger, how did that influence you as an artist. It’s actually influenced me for the better, I’ve moved to five places… from here to Montreal to Florida to Atlanta to New York and back up here… I think I got the best of all worlds… the only thing I didn’t get was a west coast influence… each city rubbed off on me in unique ways… back when I was writing those 7 songs a day each place would creep into my lyrics in its own way. Do you still write 7 songs a day Well I switched it up… I do it in verses right now… so I aim to get 15 of those done… I have my goals written on my wall and I read them everyday… and I’m constantly reminded to keep writing… keep working… to get at least 9 verses but ideally 15 done every day. Describe your writing process. I write my 16’s in columns of 4… I try to make them almost compete against each other… so I try to make the first four the hottest sh*t possible, then I push myself to get make the second set hotter than the first.. and do that all the way to the end… What’s most important in my style is the intro line and the exit line… I want to make sure those hit hard… and with the middle I go back to my philosophy of making each phrase, line, image or whatever as hot or hotter than the one before it. Would you consider yourself a perfectionist? Yes… I try to make sure every thing is the best possible… no filler lines or throw away words… everything needs to just come at you. Name some of the producers you’d like to work with that you haven’t yet. Boi 1da, Kanye, Just Blaze… really whoever is making them Outcast beats… and oh man… Noah Shebib a.k.a. “40” I need one of his beats… pronto. How did you get involved with Fred E. Fame? It’s crazy... I was on the internet… and I just got through finishing a really hot track… Freddy was promoting an event, I called him to get on the show… he asked how old I was… and when I told him 16 he said he couldn’t put me on that particular show.. but to send a track for him to hear… I emailed him the one I just finished… he called me right way and said “… That’s you…. Even on the hook…”.. I told him ya… he said he was impressed… but that he still couldn’t do the show thing right then… we hung up and that was that for a while… then we ran into each other by chance in front of a club… I
didn’t even know who he was at the time… I hadn’t ever met him in person… after I told him my name… he said he was Fred E. Fame… and that he really liked my stuff… and that he believed in me… and to be honest there isn’t a lot of cats who will say they believe in you.. then put up their own dough to push you… ever since that meeting we’ve been tag teaming the industry … its like he’s Mario and I’m Luigi… and we’re going at it hard What’s next, where do you see yourself in five years. Five years…. (pause) on top of the world (jokingly)… I don’t think I’ll have all my dreams accomplished in five years... but I want to be on stage with 50 or 75 000 fans screaming my name… reciting my lyrics. Who do people normally compare you to… who they usually say you ‘sound’ like…. Lately people have been saying Drake… I think someone on the internet started to say I was Drakes cousin, or his little brother or something (laughter)… I don’t even look like him… he’s light-skinned I’m brown… rumours are always gonna be alive at the end of the day.. but I think its THAT rumour that makes people say that I sound like him… people should listen to my tracks and tell me what they think Who is the greatest rapper in the city, country, North America, World. In the city.. right now… me…. You mean in the whole country … me. (straight faced)… North America… hmmm…. I would have to say Andre 3000… and then me… can I say more than one is that against the rules… You can do anything you want man… what about the world.. is that also Andre 3000? I’m sure there is someone out there who isn’t aware that he supposed to be an artist, someone who is really the worlds greatest… but if that kid doesn’t exist... then it would have to be me. Your current single Internet Girl is beginning to make people take notice of you… Was that track written about someone in particular, if so who is she? (Laughter) no no no… no one in particular… I’m on all the sites… like most young people… and one day I had my twitter, Facebook, and my msn open… and sending a BBM when my engineer R.I.M.E.S. came into the room and started to crack on me about talking to girls on all the sites at once... I didn’t even realize to be honest that was what was going on until he mentioned it… as I was laughing about it… he started playing a beat he just made and the track just basically wrote itself.
When is your next single coming out> We are putting out the next mix tape in late October, so watch for that… in the next month or two you’ll hear some fresh tracks. Final question you’re young, dynamic, the ladies must be going crazy at your shows, what’s the craziest thing a young lady has done at one of your shows? (laughter)… well I’ve been flashed.. had girls pass me numbers while I’m on stage… but it would have to back when I was in middle school… I was in 8th grade… and I was performing in a high school… and a girl rushed on stage and gripped me in a bear hug… but what made it worse was her friends came running on at the same time… I still think it must have been a joke… but I got knocked over… there was a pile of 16 year old girls on top of me… security had to pull them off… I didn’t even get to finish my third verse…. But it was nuts… its one of those moments that you know you really want to do this… be a performer and feel that rush when you’re on stage Thanks Lanez I appreciate you taking time while writing to do this interview. Its all good I finished that verse a couple question back… so its no big deal I’m late for my next meeting so I have to leave quickly, but I thank Lanez for his time, say my goodbyes to Freddy and his staff… and head off into the night. I can still hear the beat from the track he was working on spill out into the street as I wave for a cab. I get in, begin to drive away, and I start to think about the article, and how to try to figure out how to approach writing it. Lanez has all the swagger and energy you would expect from a 17 year old with his obvious lyrical gift, but the poise and presence he exudes is years ahead of his time. Maybe it was moving all over continent as a child, or the tragic loss of his mother that gave him his early maturity. I’m not sure, but even through the pain he describes channeling into his lyrics is obviously just under the surface, he is every bit a 17 year old… fascinated by girls, full of jokes, quick to laugh… and an unwavering belief in his abilities and the greatness he’s destined to. The cab moves through packed downtown traffic and it becomes obvious, the only way to show the world who the new kid on the block is... by letting him tell it in his own words. She is known as the Diamond Princess of the 305 (Miami) and the Slip N Slide Records Queen otherwise known as Trina aka The Baddest B*tch! Recently making her first visit to Toronto Canada, I had an opportunity to briefly meet with the dynamic diva. Looking at the flawless beaut, you would find it hard to believe that she entered in the music business over 10 years ago; Former Slip N Slide rapper Trick Daddy invited Trina to spit a verse on his track “Nann Nigga” in 1998. Due to the success of the single and it reaching the 3rd spot on the top Rap Charts - Trina was an instant star and was immediately signed to Atlantic Records/Slip N Slide Records. In 2000, her debut album ‘Da Baddest Bitch’ was released; making The new rap diva one of the leading ladies in the music business. The next few years, the diamond princess began her rollercoaster career; Every album release made Trina even more vidulant and raised her standing in the entertainment ladder; with each album landing higher rankings on the billboard charts. Glamorest Life released in 2005 was charted at #11 on the Billboard Albums and it was not until April 2008 when Still da Baddest dropped, that charted at #1 on the BillBoard Rap and R&B charts and #6 on the overall billboard.
Still the Baddest – Lisa Persaud
Trina was nominated for numerous Favorite Female HipHop Artist of the year awards and video of the year. Although she came close many times to winning, it was only in 2004 where she won remix of the year with Chingy for ‘Right Thurr’ - however the nominations alone were just as prestigous! The hot selling albums, collaborations with the hottest acts in the game Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Lil Jon, Plies, Ludacris, Chingy, Kelly Roland, Keri Hilson, Keisha Cole and many more! Finally hitting Billboard top 10s and headling many urban publications such as XXL and Vibe! This was the beginning of the empresses empire! If not only releasing album on a consistant basis was not enough, the diamond princess stretched her horizons and became her own boss! The Princess launched Pink Diamond coutour, a female High ended fashion line. In 2008 she also discovered and created Miami based female rap duo, Pretty Money, with members Nisha and Angel - who will be featured in her upcoming album Amazin - which should drop early October!
The pressure of the media and their tabloids on her very public relationship with former beau Lil Wayne and current boo Kenyon Martin - nothing has stopped the Baddest B!tch from striving to stay on top of her game!!! What’s next? The anticipated album ‘Amazin’ which should dropped early October - definitely worth the cop! Follow the Diamond princess on twitter and for the latest news and updates check out :

Despite the competition and potential new rivalery with new female rappers - we’ll just leave their names out of this!

Catching Up with DJ DRAMA - Georgia Kuye
Recently, I caught up with Mr. Gangsta Grillz, himself, DJ Drama also known as Barack O-Drama or Mr Thanksgiving for an interview. It is short and sweet but we discussed a lot; from challenges faced while trying to become successful to his views on the new comers to the hip-hop game and much more. Coming up from Philly and being Atlanta-based, you got to experience two different flavors of life. Has this had any advantages in terms of how you were influenced? Yeah I brought a lot of my Philly influences with me to Atlanta. I definitely patterned my mixtape game after the DJs I came up off of from Philly & NY. I feel being from Philly and comin’ up in ATL gives me the best of both worlds.
I’m excited about hip-hop! Hopefully far! In what major way has the game changed from when you first came? The game is totally different from when I was comin’ up. But I was also a kid so my angle of how I look at things is different as well. But I loved the game and I love it now. What was the defining moment in your career? The first time I got my name on a flyer. That’s all I set out to accomplish.
Which city would you say feels more at home to you?
Being a DJ you’re able to feel the crowd’s vibe and give them what they want. Which song right now is sure to get the crowd hype?
They both feel at home. I feel at home everywhere I go. I currently live in ATL.
My favorite song at the moment is Steady MobbinWayne/Gucci.
They say the music industry is like hustling. Can you share one of the hardships you had to face while trying to make it?
‘Gangsta Grillz Vol. 3’ is in the making, which artists will you be working with?
I did it all. Weddings, house parties, family reunions, kinko runs, store calls, etc. Whatever was necessary. It’s definitely a hustler’s sport.
Stay tuned!! Where do you see your career within the next few years?
You must have looked up to some DJs growing up. Who was the first DJ you looked at and thought, “I want to do what he does... I can do what he does”?
Ahh man, still feeding the streets.
It actually was a fictional character in the movie, “Juice”. Omar Epps’ character, DJ GQ is what inspired me to become a DJ.
Love what you do and the rest will come. It’s a blessing to be able to make a living off of something that started out as a hobby. A lot of work and a lot grinding will always pay off!
With talented new comers like J. Cole, Drake, and Kid Cudi, how do you feel about hip-hop right now? Where do you think guys like that will take hip-hop?

What advice would you give to any upcoming DJs?

Jay Z blueprint iii album review - Georgia Kuye
In addition, the album has some questionable production choices and unnecessary artist features. What JayZ fans expected was for him and ‘Ye to go back to the formulas that made Blueprint a classic and apply them to this project. Instead, Timbo’s lackluster production for tracks like “Reminder” and “Off That” are disappointing (I will revisit these tracks in a bit). The featured artists on BPIII are some of the best in the game right now however some features have fans shaking their heads; Drake’s simple hook on “Off That” and Kanye’s contribution to “Hate” are weak and not up to par with the talent they truly possess. On the contrary, “Already Home” featuring Kid Cudi’s soulful vocals compliment Ye’s violin-based melody.
To some, Shawn Carter, better known as Jay-Z, is the greatest MC alive. To others, he may have held that title from 1996-2003 but as of late has fallen off. Some would agree that he should step down from the throne and pass the crown to someone else. With so many young, talented up and coming artists in the game does Jay still got it? On September 11, 2001, Blueprint was released, solidifying Jay-Z as one of the greatest emcees of all time. This album contains rich lyrical content and was heavily produced by Kanye West; a deadly combination that marked Blueprint as one of Jay’s best. With this, he has been expected to carry the torch for the hip-hop culture; in other words, if any albums post Blueprint are anything short of classic they are easily labeled as a flop. Exactly eight years after the release of Blueprint, the highly anticipated Blueprint III is dropped... In track one, “What We Talkin’ About”, Jay lays down who (whether or not it’s Dame Dash or Jaz-O) and what he’s taking about in the tracks that will proceed after. No one can deny that “D.O.A.” and “Run This Town” are highly addictive. If they had not been released as singles (and played out profusely), the album may have received higher ratings.
25
Some aspects of the album remain the same. “Venus vs. Mars” is enjoyed more often by the female hip-hop heads yet it cannot be labeled as a “ladies’ track”. JayZ has been consistent in making tracks about women and love in a way that does not come off as too soft of bubbly. Fans looking for the feeling that Blueprint gives off can look to “Empire State of Mind”, beautiful compilation with Alicia Keys, a hip-hop version of Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York”. “So Ambitious”, a jazzy track supplied with a heavy use of bass is brought to you by The Neptunes. Similar to “Reminder”, Jay-Z talks about why he is deserving of his title as one of the best but at this point it’s been overdone. No one can take away from Jay-Z what he clearly demonstrates with every verse; the boy is a genius. Blueprint III overall did not live up to its expectations to be a classic but it is, nonetheless, worth the purchase. Those stuck in the past would disagree but after listening to the album for a week straight it is clear where hip-hop is about to be taken.

. Ms. MusiQ WITH
HAPPY FALL SEASON TORONTO!! YEESSSSSSS!
Question for you Toronto... Did you get all you wanted out of Summer 2009? I sure didn’t! :( I feel like, as soon as I made plans to go here and do that, it was over! It’s no secret that Canadian weather is absolutely ridiculous but this summer’s weather was on another level!! I didn’t go to Wonderland, didn’t take any road trips or vacations, didn’t go to as many events as I would have loved to and I certainly didn’t shop as much as I wanted to. I feel like I didn’t have enough time and every day I had something plan, the weather spazzed out!! Geez.... In any case, fall is my absolute FAVOURITE season! There’s nothing better than cool breeze, hot jackets and dope shoes.... Ahhhhhhhh, bring it on! There are two main things that I want to touch on in this issue and the first one is what I’m going to call ‘nightclub etiquette’. You know when you go to that OVERHYPED party and leave the club upset that you ever bothered to leave your house? Well, this one is mainly for the party throwers and club promoters... SMARTEN UP!
<<Dope & Fresh in the City’s Nightclub Etiquette>>: 1. For those of you who are lacking common decency for other human beings, it’s a shame that I have to ask you to stop over packing these nightclubs! If I cannot comfortably move past people without having to touch their sticky, sweaty bodies (YUCK!), then that is a problem... better yet, a HAZARD! The safety of your attendees should be a lot more important then bragging on Facebook about how many people you crammed in your chosen venue! 2. Bouncers, you are not suppose to allow people inside these venues who are already drunk! Isn’t that against some law? If someone is stumbling to the front of the line, wouldn’t common sense tell you that they should be denied entry inside the venue? Also, to the people to like to “pre-drink”, if you cannot hold your liquor, stay home! I shouldn’t have to suffer because you had one too many and are now throwing up on the dance floor beside me, ugh! 3. Well known DJs who can’t actually DJ.... *sigh*... This one has to be the biggest oxymoron ever! Instead of bragging about how many parties you have lined up and how many Hip Hop artists want to use your services, how about you SHARPEN YOUR SKILLS so that majority of the crowd stops leaving before 1am! You cannot mix music properly if you’re constantly pressing pause between each song or if you scratch the record for a whole minute because you don’t know what to put on next.... BOO! 4. Fighting in the club.... Come on guys, once you move out of the all-ages stage, the minimum age to get into the club is 19. At 19 years old, you would think people would have the common sense to keep their drama at home and away from others who are not involved. Do you think it’s cute to ruin the party for hundreds of others because you cannot be grown about yours and keep your anger in check? No... Not cute at all! 5. Last but certainly not least, the throwing of glass objects at people.... Seriously?! I feel like a kindergarten teacher telling a child to stop putting gum in the other kids’ hair! In what world do you think it is appropriate for you pick up a glass drinking cup and throw it at another person?? DO NOT THROW GLASS AT PEOPLE! It’s extremely inappropriate and it really saddens me that I actually have to point this one out! ***Come on Toronto... GET IT TOGETHER!!*** Ok, now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, on with my next point. With a lot of people being back in school, I thought it would be cool to recommend a great new book to you. For those of you who haven’t heard of Shannon Teresa Boodram, WAKE UP! Shannon is a young journalist who began her role as a sexual educator when she was 19, after appearing on a Canadian National network as a contestant wearing a ‘saveyourcherry.com’ T-shirt. Since then, she has gone on to host a seven-part sex ed. pod cast series- she was an expert panelist on ‘Much Music Much Talks Teen Sex’ alongside Sue Johanson and she has spoken to various youth groups and newspapers on her brand of sexual education. She graduated from Centennial College in print journalism and has since gone on to work as a TV host for High School Rush on
29
RogersTV (winning an Impression Award for best on-air RogersTV personality in Canada this year) and is still the host of the 2009 season of High School Rush! Shannon is also a freelance writer for publications like the CBC.ca, Metro Newspaper and Cream World Magazine, runs a few networking sites such as shannonteresa.com, laidthebook.com and has a blog with her best friend, (singer/actress) Andrea Lewis called thosegirlsarewild.com. She even has her own photography business where her work has been published in Now, Desi Magazine, Share, Urbanology Magazine, she has volunteered with Big Brothers and Sisters as a coach for youth basketball, was an intern with MTV Canada and was a mentor with an inner-city youth organization called The Remix Project. The only way to describe this lady is as Toronto’s very own Superwoman! Shannon was a University student in Baltimore, Maryland on a full track scholarship at the age of 18. During that time, she met and was surrounded by a lot of different people dealing with different sexual issues, including a young girl living with HIV. After moving back home to Toronto, she took the stories she heard from others, as well as her own experiences and came up with the idea for the saveyourcherry.com website which later, turned into a mission for her to get more stories from others who have had different sexual experiences (good and bad) and give that information in the form of her new book, ‘LAID: Young People’s Experience with Sex in an Easy-Access Culture’ to young people who need to know what the real deal is about sex! The book was released on October 1st and if you haven’t gotten one for yourself, go out and get it for someone else! I felt it was important to bring this issue up because people have a lot of different thoughts and feelings about sex these days and in my opinion, the younger generation is getting sexual at a ridiculously young age and at a ridiculously fast pace! Not using protection, flying through partners like CRAZY and having kids at 14 and 15... It’s insane! *Read this book Toronto, you might learn something you never knew! * Congrats on the book release Shannon!! Alright folks, I hope everyone enjoys the beauty of fall and I hope everyone has a productive season! Me? I’ll be putting my business plans together! I’m trying to take over the (entertainment) world... What? Y’all didn’t know? LOL! Stay dope and keep it fresh!

JAMIE FOXX SPEAKS ON HIS ROLE IN NEW MIKE TYSON PROJECT. Jamie Foxx has revealed he wants to play ex-world heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson in a biopic that would reunite the actor with his ‘Ray’ director Taylor Hackford. Foxx recently told MTV News that he was making plans to team with the filmmaker to collaborate on a feature that would cast an unflinching eye on the fighter. “It’s strange,” Foxx said of why he wants to portray Tyson. “Look at society. Sometimes we put you up so high, and some people say it’s to get aim on you, but once you get up there it’s like: What do you do once you’re up there now?” “The film will be told in his words. A lot of times we’ve just seen everyone else’s take; it would be great to just get his take,” Foxx explained. He’s looking forward to rolling cameras on the flick and getting people to look at one of our generation’s most controversial characters in a new light. “I think he has a tremendous story. And if he allows me to do it, I think it will be one of those things were it will be really a serious event.” Foxx said that he can remember back to the late ‘80s/early ‘90s heyday of Tyson and how beloved the man once was. “You wanted to see how short it was,” the “Law Abiding Citizen” star said of Tyson’s legendarily brief knockouts of his opponents in those days. “I’ll never forget this: At my house in Vegas, fifty-five people there. Eight guys, the rest were women, corporate. I’m not talking about groupies; corporate women, have their own money, own jobs, watching this fight.” “I’m like, you like Mike Tyson? [And the women said:] ‘Oh yes; something about him. Oh, oh my goodness,’” Foxx grinned. “And he was coming out of the tunnel, ‘Oh he doesn’t have his shirt on. Oh!’ And he was just this ultimate man. I remember telling everybody ‘Okay, everybody get dressed right now because it’s not going to take that long for him to knock this kid out, and we’ve got to get to the after-party. I remember him knocking his opponent out, and it was like the Daytona 500, getting to our cars to get to the after-party just to get a glimpse of this guy. He was bigger than life.” JAY-Z TALKS MICHAEL JACKSON In the new issue of NME Jay-Z pays tribute to the legend Michael Jackson, revealing that Jay-Z collaborated with Michael Jackson multiple times, something that was until now

unknown. According to Jay-Z, Michael sang on “Girls, Girls, Girls,” a track from the original “Blueprint” album. “He was on my song ‘Girls, Girls, Girls’, singing these background vocals and I didn’t even put his name on it,” Jay wrote. Jigga apparently teamed up with MJ on “You Rock My World” too plus brought him on stage during his 2001 Summer Jam performance. “He played a concert with me in New York, which was great,” Jay continued. “He got up and he walked out and the place went mental, guys were just grabbing their hats and throwing them like, ‘Aiiiiiiiiiieeeeee!’” N.E.R.D. ADDS NEW MEMBER. Pharrell, Chad & Shae will be joined by Rhea (a Toronto native of Guyanese descent) on their fourth studio album, Instant Gratification, which is set to drop in 2010. “Musically, we’re just somewhere else with her,” Pharrell told MTV News. “The music is now very 3-D. It’s something you have to hear. But you’ll see. We’re definitely somewhere else. I want to leave that impact moment for when you purchase your download and you purchase your CD. The music is very three-dimensional. We’re just really excited. We feel like N.E.R.D. has always been the punks of hip-hop and the outcasts of alternative music — just a little different. But this time, we’re taking no prisoners.” The Neptunes artist explained Rhea might be petite, at just 5-foot-4, but her booming voice and her classical background blend in with the genre-bending trio of N.E.R.D., also including Chad Williams and Shae. “Now you have this little Tinkerbell that’s just stepped in and has been amazing,” he said. “It’s made it a fun process. We can go in so many more directions, becaus e we have the vocal support.” Rhea, a Toronto native of Guyanese descent, met the fellas only once in person before she auditioned for them via Skype. She sang “His Eye Is on the Sparrow.” Her rendition impressed the guys, and she soon found herself signing on. “It was just a really good time,” she said of meeting the collective. “When I came in there and I met them and they heard me sing, I think they decided it was the right fit.” “Don’t be bashful,” Pharrell chimed in. “We lost our minds. We thought she was great.” N.E.R.D. will be on the road next week with Hov for his Blueprint 3 tour.
