D-School

OBJECTIVE: To introduce the generative and fast-paced element of design by interveiwing a classmate to create a gift that best fits their needs within the time constraints of a single class period.

I created a phone case with an attachable headband and high resolution camera for the best concert veiwing experience free from distraction. Engaging with a real person seemed to make the creative process of developing ideas a lot more fluid. My ideas would change as the person continued to tell me about themselves and so instead of thinking of the first thing that popped into my head and sticking to it, I was more open to altering and toying with my ideas, leading to a better, more suitable outcome. Showing unfinished work felt unsatisfying and mildly frustrating. However, due to the nature of the activity, it also relieved that pressure of feeling like the product needed to be perfect, so in a way, I felt more comfortable making mistakes.

DOT LINE

OBJECTIVE: To create a series of three designs, using only dots and lines, that communicated a word or emotion while practicing the foundations of Gestalt design principles.

Completing this project enhanced my understanding for Gestalt because it allowed me to utilize the principles first hand in my work. Due to the fact that I am more of a “hands on” learner, this project really brought my understanding of gestalt full circle (no pun intended). I began to learn more about my personality as an artist while completing this project because creating a “well-crafted object” was challenging to me. This project taught me the simplicity of abstraction. I always thought that abstraction was this complex element of art whose true meaning could never be deciphered. However, I learned that abstraction can be as simple as a few dots and lines and still be able to clearly portray a feeling.
