CONCEPT

Proximity

Narrative

These collages represent three ideas of proximity in today’s context. The idea of proximity is constantly in flux with the changes around us. After this COVID-19 pandemic proximity in architecture can be seen through a whole new spectrum.

The first collage expresses the idea of duality in the idea of proximity today. People are physically apart but digital connected. It represents the effect of pandemic on people’s lifestyle. The second collage in a abstract way talks about the new ways of life and how social distance is effects the idea of proximity. The last collage is reflection of the city and surrounding. It represents the idea of a culturally rich context in the proximity of the site and the overlapping or infusing these context in collage represents our intentions of incorporating the idea of surrounding proximity as an aspect of design

PROGRAM

A Vertical Neighbourhood

The program consists of shops, a hostel, micro apartments, one and two bedroom apartments, penthouses, and many public spaces. The public spaces include common workspaces, an outdoor working area, outdoor terrace garden, winter garden, herbal garden, a fitness area, an outdoor gym and fitness center, penthouse terraces, lounge, cafe, green spaces, a dog walk and a pet care and grooming center. The program is spread vertically throughout the building. This is to increase the amount of time a resident spends across the building. The proximity a person feels is to the spaces instead of just their neighbor. This increases the likelihood of a resident meeting people from a different floor than where they live. The location of each of these spaces was considered for maximum movement of the residents and for the best views for each activity. Each public area is located in a cut out portion of the floors. Most of these are exterior spaces with a few examples like the winter garden being an interior space. Since Chicago has rough winters, these interior spaces are meant to allow the residents a comfortable space in the winter to experience nature and get sunlight.

For the idea of proximity, the program of outdoor spaces becomes quite essential.

SITE PLAN

The proximity of important buildings were taken into account when designing how the building meets the ground. The building responds to the site by being open to the corner of Balbo and Wabash. This creates a flow into the shops on the first floor. The bottom four floors connect the users with the surrounding context. This relates to the proximity of Chicago’s urban fabric. The context of Chicago is a main part of the building. Without it, the opening would not have anything to respond to. The openings would not have anything to respond to without the important aspects of the Chicago urban fabric. These floors consist of shops and the hostel. The footprint of these floors allow the building to join the site.

ENCLOSURE

There are three parts to the enclosure of the building: the floor projections, the glass skin, and the fins. The floor projections shield the north and south facing windows from the sun. The fins shield the east and west facing windows. The fins are made up of different materials because of this. The north and south facades have glass fins while the east and west facades have metal fins.

DETAILS

The construction is largely reinforced concrete, with a plaster on it. The slab projections are divided by using slab dividers to provide a thermal break. The footing is a raft footing of 4’ in depth. The foundation for the superstructure sits on a group of pile foundations.
