Hey Hardin County! As always, I am so glad to have you here reading Issue 4 of Elizabethtown Lifestyle. Things are looking up in the world and I am so excited about everything happening in our city this fall. Be on the look out for new businesses in this issue as many are mentioned and included in features. In case this is your first time picking up a magazine: Our features showcase the talents and expertise from local residents and business owners. Most of our articles are written by members of the community. If you contributed, whether it be through advertising, photography or submitting an article, I am celebrating you! If you have an idea for an article or feature, you can always email me at info@elizabethtownlifestyle.com. If you follow my personal Instagram (@_giselle_smith), you probably know that my favorite pastime is dining out. Over a year ago, I put together an editorial calendar for 2019-2020 that included a local restaurant feature— what is now titled Locals Love Dining and is our Issue 4 cover feature. Flip through the pages to read a bit about MUST TRY locals eats. So many new businesses are set to open this fall: We had the pleasure of touring The Newberry Building with Ben LaRue and have the inside scoop on what is to come downtown. Raise your hand if you’re both ready to get back to school and worried about what is to come of the 2020-2021 school year! Me too. A fun, feature included this issue is Back to School, but instead of cute backpacks and over-achieving lunch box inspiration, we interviewed teachers throughout Hardin County on getting your kids ready for what is to come.

Family Fun Cafe & Ice Cream Family Fun Cafe & Ice Cream has been in business since 2016 and is located in Radcliff right off of Dixie Highway. Family-owned and operated, Family Fun Cafe & Ice Cream is run by Michelle Harmon. The restaurant serves up delicious ice cream flavors and a variety of tasty meals ranging from nachos to homemade chili. Favorite menu items include Homemade Potato Soup, Elephant Ear Ice Cream, and Bourbon Pecan Ice Cream. They also have sugar-free and dairy-free items such as their Philadelphia Water Ice. Last year, they launched their fun shakes, including a specialty flavor and a collectible mug; Bourbon Pecan & Brownie and Birthday Cake are favorites. The restaurant hosts events such as petting zoos, pony rides, father-daughter ice cream socials, birthday parties, and movie nights. A mother of ten children, Michelle loves bringing families together and showing them how they can have fun and connect cost-effectively.

Impellizzeri’s Pizza
Impellizzeri’s is a downtown pizza parlor that has been open for nearly three years. The restaurant was brought to Elizabethtown by Ben LaRue, Kevin Addington, and Carl Swope as a part of the revival of downtown. It has become a prominent part of downtown and a place that people love to eat, especially after the events that occur during the summertime. Every day at lunch, you can get a slice and a salad starting at $5.99. Slice choices are classic pepperoni, sausage, or plain cheese and a house salad with your choice of dressing or a Caesar salad.

Scheduled Ladies Nights take place Wednesday evenings. Impellizzeri’s has many great pizzas to try from, so it’s hard to recommend just one. But if we must, we suggest the Sampler Pizza. The Cheese Bread, as well as the Original Wings, are a must-try too!

El Alcapulco El Acapulco is one of the most popular Mexican restaurants in Etown for a reason. Ramiro Romero and his family opened El Acapulco almost a decade ago; they take great pride in being a gathering place for families and friends to come together over delicious food. The service is fantastic, and the staff treats guests like family. The welcoming waiters and staff make it hard not to be a regular at El Acapulco! They recently added an outdoor patio, so people can enjoy eating and spending time together in an open-air environment. Our favorite dishes are the El Alcapulco—basically chicken with queso and homemade rice —and then the classic Chimichanga. Be sure to pair your meal with a margarita for good measure. Flavors include traditional lime, strawberry, mango, and piùa colada.

Ginza Hibachi
Ginza is easy to recognize with its beautiful koi fish mural, but the real magic happens at the Hibachi grill. The restaurant has been a hot spot for sushi and hibachi in Elizabethtown for the past eighteen years. Michael Yun and his family saw a market for Japanese food and opened up soon after restaurants in Elizabethtown were able to acquire a liquor license, Ginza was one of the first to be approved. Michael’s favorite thing about owning a restaurant in Elizabethtown is seeing people sharing a meal and growing friendships with his regular customers. Ginza is known for their hibachi: Chicken, steak—Yakisoba or filet, shrimp, scallops, and vegetarian and are options all served with fabulous fried rice and mixed veggies. You can order off of the menu at your table or join in an interactive experience at one of the unique hibachi tables. If you’re a sushi lover like we are, Ginza is amazing. All sushi is rolled to order with fresh seafood by sushi chef Danny Kwon.

Claudia’s Tea Room is owned and managed by Charles Thurman and his family. The property has been in the Thurman Family for as long as they can remember. The tea room was built in 1880, and the Thurman-Phillips Guest Home was later built in 1897. When dining at Claudia’s Tea Room, we suggest trying their Sweet Potato Biscuits and the Country Ham with Apple Butter. Claudia’s Tea Room uses many Kentucky-made products: Their ham is from Penn’s Country Ham in Liberty, Kentucky, and their teas from Elmwood Inn Fine Teas in Danville, Kentucky. Charles and his family love entertaining and hosting guests. His goal is to make them feel at home every visit. Guests can expect friendly service and delicious southern cuisine. Shown here are Kentucky Hot Browns, Shrimp & Grits, and Bourbon Bread Pudding— YUM. In honor of the lady of the house, Rose, napkins are folded in the perfect roses and set at every place setting.

Namaste
If you haven’t tried Indian food yet, Namaste is known for some of the best Indian food in Kentucky. The restaurant is a hidden gem in Elizabethtown. They have been in business since 2014 and are locally-owned by Laly Kumar and his family. They have owned restaurants in other cities, but they live here in Elizabethtown and are proud to bring authentic Indian fare to Hardin County. The family loves the people of Elizabethtown almost as much as my family loves their food. They’ve made great connections and enjoy seeing repeat customers and getting to know them. They have always made us feel welcome. Favorite dishes to try are Chicken Tikka Masala, Tandoori Chicken, and the Garlic Naan. The restaurant also features an Indian grocery if picking up food and cooking is more your style. Catering is available for local events! 1609 N. Dewster’s Homemade Ice Cream & Bakery Dewster’s Homemade Ice Cream & Bakery started as a food truck in 2015. For years customers asked where their ice cream parlor was, and they didn’t have an answer. So, in 2018, they opened up their location in Elizabethtown. Kelly and Dewey Cruze, along with their children, run and own the parlor with the help of their pastry chef Rachel Wilson. The Cruze’s love meeting new people and seeing old friends who come in. WooHoo II
e l i z a b e t h t o w n
Have you ever tasted a Gyro? Leann Priddy, the owner of Woo Hoo II, knew the city of Elizabethtown needed a Greek restaurant. We couldn’t be more thankful. Woo Hoo has been open since 2012 and is family-owned. When asked what her favorite part of being a restaurateur is, Leann told us that she loves the people who come through her doors. Much of the clientele are regulars. She tells her employees that they only have a few minutes to turn people’s days around, which is part of their job at Woo Hoo. We recommend the Greek Salad, Gyro & Friends, and the Gyro Burger. In case you’re wondering or are nervous about placing your order and saying “gyro” wrong, we’ve got you covered. It’s “YEE-roh.” My personal favorite is the Sparta Plate with Gyro meat plus extra Greek Tzatziki sauce. Finish your meal with baklava, a rich, sweet dessert pastry made with flaky layers of dough filled with nuts and honey.

Pizza Mavens
Pizza Mavens is a NEW pizza place on Leitchfield Road. Ron Bodner from Reuben’s Deli and Stacy Reynolds of Bourbon Barrel Tavern opened Pizza Mavens almost a year ago, bringing brick oven craft pizza to Elizabethtown. Every ingredient from the dough to the sauce is made in-house. At Pizza Mavens, you can order a New York-style thin crust as well as their “double dough” version for those who like a thicker crust. Of course, all of the pizzas are hand-tossed and then finished in a brick oven. Dining in is an option, but delivery is perfect for your next backyard pizza party or movie night. You can’t go wrong with any of their pizzas, but we recommend trying one of their calzones. Menu items are still being added: Be on the lookout for subs and new pasta options soon!

The Cafe at Swope The Cafe at Swope Toyota has been bringing smiles to local diners for the past five years. Kathy McCubbin, the general manager of Swope Toyota, wanted to open a restaurant up because it was unique—no other Toyota dealership in the country has a full restaurant. Since then, it has become a destination for everyone, whether you are looking to purchase a new Toyota, service your car, needing to buy some parts, or if you just want to meet some friends for lunch. After eating a delicious meal at The Cafe, Kathy suggests trying one of their homemade desserts, especially their carrot cake, Italian Cream, or their banana pudding. Whether you’re catching up on homework, having a business meeting, or just stopping by in need of a quick caffeine fix, Vibe Coffee is a downtown favorite. The Erizer Family opened Vibe in July 2015; daughter Keeley wanted the people of Elizabethtown to experience the “small coffee shop feel” and had always dreamed of opening one. The coffee shop is open seven days a week and is run by Keeley and her husband, Matthew. Their favorite part of owning Vibe Coffee is working with family, meeting new people, and getting to know their customers and employees. When visiting Vibe, you should try their house coffee and one of their açaí bowls or some avocado toast. If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, we suggest the Lavender Vanilla White Mocha (Latte)—iced is ideal for summer. Bourbon Barrel Tavern
Five years ago, Bourbon Barrel Tavern was opened by three local owners, Stacy Reynolds, Steve Smith, and Kevin Lowe, who grew up in Elizabethtown and attended school together. When the City of Elizabethtown made local bar licenses available for a limited amount of time, it was a no-brainer that downtown desperately needed a bar to get more people to the square. The mantra the owners lived by while building Bourbon Barrel Tavern was “Do It Right.” They wanted the bar to be done the “right” way, how they envisioned it—no shortcuts. They knew this was necessary for the bar to be a real asset for downtown and catalyze the revitalization efforts being made. Bourbon Barrel Tavern boasts a collection of over 540 bourbons, the largest collection in Hardin County. Bartender Brandon is a crowd-pleaser, to say the least; he can make any drink your heart desires, including the Bourbon’s Backyard Signature Drinks such as The Elizabeth and The Cannonball. Whether you’re seeking a rare bourbon, heading to happy hour with friends after a long day at the office, or you’re looking to turn up on the weekend while listening to live music, BBT is the place to be.

Back Home Restaurant
Back Home has been in Etown for over thirtysix years. Lori Fulkerson and her family own the restaurant; her mother passed it down to them seventeen years ago. Back Home started as a craft show on the square in downtown. Five years after its opening, the store was moved to its current location and only sold antiques and crafts—there was no original intention to become a restaurant. To occupy men so that they wouldn’t hurry women shopping, Lori’s mom set some tables out with some food, and eventually, it became the full-time restaurant and store it is today. Some customer favorites are the Kentucky Hot Brown, Lori’s Dad’s Meatloaf, and the Fried Green Tomatoes.

Flywheel Brewing
Flywheel has been crafting the best in local beer since November 2017. Owners Ashley, Aaron, and Josh are all Elizabethtown natives. The group saw a need for a brewery in this region and wanted to bring responsible drinking culture to the area. The location was selected to aid in the downtown revival. When asked his favorite menu item, Aaron stated, “THE BEER. All of the beer. If he had to choose one, it would be the Mango Milkshake IPA, a perfect balance of bitterness from hops and sweetness from the mangos. downtown rising NEW BUSINESS ALERT: The Newberry Building is set to open later this
fall. Not only did Ben LaRue give us the behind-the-scenes tour, here he shares how the Newberry Building project came about, his involvement with downtown revitalization, and what we can expect in the new space. I moved to Elizabethtown in 1994 to open an Edward Jones investment office. My wife and I chose Elizabethtown because it was close to my family in Hodgenville, and we already had some good friends living here. Our first home in town was at the bottom of Central Avenue, just a few steps from the square! In 1998, I left Jones and started LaRue Financial Advisors. As my business prospered over the years, I started looking for a building that would be a permanent home for us. I noticed the former Huddleston VanZant law office building on Poplar Street was for sale and inquired about it. I bought it in 2006, and we’ve been in that building ever since. Upon reflection, I knew I always wanted to be on or near the square instinctively. My father operated an insurance and accounting practice on the square in Hodgenville for nearly 70 years. I grew up in a downtown environment where every local shop owner knows each other, and I have always loved and appreciated it. My father had a cup of coffee with other business owners nearly every day. Now, I do the same thing at Vibe almost every day.

THE NEWBERRY The JJ Newberry building had been sitting empty, slowly rotting since 2012 when the city acquired it at a master commissioner’s sale. When ERA acquired the building in 2014, the back third of the building was completely unsalvageable, and we had to demolish the entire section. The roof leaked badly in the front section of the building, the floors were wet and rotting, and the basement wreaked of MOLD! It was awful. Kevin took over the restoration project of the building, Carl was finance and legal, and my job was to recruit a business to the building. Right away, I knew we needed pizza and beer on the square! I either phoned or emailed most of the locally owned pizza restaurants in Louisville. I talked to several, but only one person chose to visit. Bruce Besten, the managing member of Impellizzeri’s Pizza, responded to a blind email from me thirty minutes after I sent it. We spoke shortly after, and he visited. Long story short, the building was too big and in such bad shape that he couldn’t see it happening. Rejection #1. We had two more serious restaurant visits for the Newberry. Both are well known and very successful Louisville businesses. I’ll never forget that on one cold winter day, we were attempting to persuade a gentleman from Louisville to consider the Newberry. It was Kevin, Greg Jenkins, Kelly Emerine, and myself trying to make the sale. Kevin was there with his vision of what the building could be, Greg was there as a builder and expert on our local economy, Kelly was there with information on our local real estate market, and I was just trying not to freeze to death! It had been raining, so the roof was actively leaking. There was no power, so it was dark in the middle of the day. It was freezing cold outside and even colder in the dark, wet, rotting, moldy, old building. You would have to be wearing the most optimistic, rose-colored glasses to make that visit a success. Soon after that visit, we decided to demolish the rest of the building and start from scratch. It just wasn’t salvageable.

The rebirth of the JJ Newberry building is well on its way now. The exterior is largely finished and is a mirror of what the original structure looked like in the early 1900s. We think it fits in with other structures on the square and are very proud of how it has turned out! The main floor will house a gourmet hamburger restaurant/bar with a dedicated meeting space in the rear section. The meeting space will accommodate 50 to 80 people depending on how it is configured and has an outdoor terrace as well. Since we are in Bourbon’s Backyard, the restaurant will stock many great bourbon brands to choose from as well as wine, craft beer, and cocktails.
The basement of the building will be a “Speakeasy” type bar, serving handmade craft cocktails in a relaxed atmosphere. We even made room for a one-lane bowling alley in the back of the bar, which we are very excited about! There will also be covered outdoor seating, which I am sure will be inviting and popular. The second story of the JJ Newberry will consist of four two-bedroom condominiums with open-air rooftop patios. These units are for sale. From the patios, you can see the entire downtown area. These condos would be perfect for living in and entertaining as well! The JJ Newberry project hopefully will be complete at the end of 2020. To finish the Newberry story, I need to pivot back to Impellizzeri’s!

DOWNTOWN RISING CONTINUED: IMPELLIZZERI’S Earlier I told you that Mr. Besten, the managing member of Impellizzeri’s, turned me down on his first visit to town. Since that day, we had acquired the old Stewart Opera House at auction from the county. The building housed the PVA, county clerk, and deeds and records, which moved out to Ring Road in the new county government facility. We had no idea what to do with the space; we just believed we could make it into a success. I called Mr. Besten again and said he needed to see our new property. Once again, he told me no. Rejection #2. I waited two weeks before calling again, and this time he came down (probably to get rid of me), and we sold him on the project! Bruce and his management team have done an incredible job at Impellizzeri’s. It is well run and staffed by incredibly great people. Wes Phelps and Robin Monroe are superstars. A year or so after Impellizzeri’s opened, I approached Bruce about a burger concept on the square, and he didn’t hesitate much this time! I’m happy to say that the owners and management team of Impellizzeri’s will be the same for our gourmet burger themed restaurant in the JJ Newberry! My partners and I have been blessed with many, many friends that have helped in everything we have done on the square. Brandon Fogle at South Central Bank, Mark Harris of Mark Harris Construction, Mayor Gregory, our attorney Mike Moulton, JHL Construction, Elizabeth Adams Design & Consulting, and so many others have helped make these dreams become reality. In five years, I believe our downtown will be much different from today. We hope to incorporate more green space, retail shops, arts, and cultural activities, and make it more pedestrian-friendly. Downtown Elizabethtown is truly rising!
*If anyone has an idea that they believe could help grow our downtown, feel free to reach out to me!

Schmidt has seen firsthand how financial education can benefit the employer and the employee. Financial wellness programs are one of the most revered job benefits sought out by employees. The First48 Financial Education Alliance wants to provide financial education in various sectors: families, school curriculum, churches, and employers. These are the four pillars of society that are vital to improving the financial education of our communities. First, financial education starts at home around the kitchen table. As Todd points out, this has been eroding for decades because financial education has simply been ignored. Second, schools are a vital place to learn because they provide the opportunity to reach teenagers at the perfect time in their financial journey. Todd even points out that the thing that bothers him the most is the number of adults that say, “I wish I had that class in high school,” referring to financial literacy. First48 wants to end that sentiment. Third, many church leaders are also struggling with tackling biblical finance with the congregation. It is a tough topic from the pulpit, even though money and possessions are one of the most talked-about topics in the Bible, and tackling the

Nothing screams summer louder than yellow. It is one of those colors that look great on every skin tone. I love this Draper James dress and the flattering fit the wrap-style brings. Plus, wicker bags are all the rage this season and bring fashion into your sun-kissed, 54 style. southern

Wedding season is upon us, and the last thing you should stress about is what to wear. A classic form-fitting cocktail dress is perfect for any type of ceremony- casual or formal. Let the dress speak for itself with a basic clutch and simple jewelry.

Every girl needs a denim jacket in their closet. I love to drape it over my shoulders for an effortless look. An eyelet pencil skirt dresses up the vibes the denim jacket and knotted tee bring. Altogether, it makes for a super chic look, perfect for a dinner date or a shopping day with friends.

Hello! It’s great to be back, sending some creative love your way! My goodness, how things have changed in the world since the last issue. There has been an incredible shift in routine, in perspective, in awareness. Our lives have looked a bit different recently. More time at home has meant more time with family, more cooking and baking, more reading, movie watching, snack eating, game playing. The list could go on (mine certainly does) and would hopefully include a few artful activities. If so, good for you. If not, now’s your chance! I’m giving you a simple project this time around that allows for lots of creative freedom.
A process that requires only three materials, but yields endless, beautifully unique results. So grab some paper and a marker or two and make a piece of art for your wall, for a friend, or just for you. That’s it! Draw what you love. Be inspired by the world around you or a world far away. Add lettering to make a statement, or let your illustration stand on its own. Serious, silly, realistic, abstract, detailed or simple.

STAY COOL H A R DIN COUNTY Staying cool is a top priority during the hot summer months. Ireland Heating & Cooling has been delivering comfort to Hardin County since 1968—over 50 years of service to the area. They’re a family-owned business run by local Wayne Ireland. He and his wife Chrystal live here in Elizabethtown with their son and daughter, Jagger and Oakley, and their German Shepherd, Ellie. Ireland Heating & Cooling specializes in residential service and replacements for heating and cooling systems. We had the pleasure of interviewing Wayne on tips for keeping your cooling system in tip-top shape this summer season: COOLING SYSTEM MAINTENANCE & REPAIRS The biggest thing you can do to maintain your heating and cooling system is to check and change your filters monthly. This is a massive cost-saver because it can save you an unnecessary service trip. A lot of times, when technicians arrive on-site when a system is not cooling, they quickly realize that the issue is due to a dirty or clogged filter. You can locate the filter inside of the indoor unit or furnace. Be sure to check the size of your filter before heading to your local hardware store to find a replacement. Wayne recommends buying the standard throw-away filter as they should be changed monthly anyways. Sometimes fancy filters can do more harm than good depending on the type of system you have because they can restrict airflow or damage the motor, which leads to costly repairs. If you have checked and replaced your filters and are still having issues with your air conditioning, scheduling repairs can be done over the phone or online. Technicians can typically come out within 24 hours, although wait times can vary during peak season. The majority of repairs are completed within 24 hours. UPGRADING YOUR COOLING SYSTEM Ireland Heating & Cooling installs hundreds of new heating and cooling systems every year. How do you know when it is time to upgrade? The first indication is repeated expensive repairs. If you have had to call a technician on multiple occasions, it is probably time for a new system. Second, if your electricity bill and operating costs are high, upgrading to a more modern system can save most households thousands of dollars over the years. Lastly, comfort issues within your home, which can range from high humidity and uneven temperatures to noise, are many times a reason to upgrade. If you think you may need an upgrade, Ireland Heating & Cooling offers free consultations and financing. Scheduling a consult is simple: You can call, text, or go online to schedule your appointment. Once an advisor has come out, materials are usually available within 24-48 hours, and installation is completed the same day. PREPPING YOUR SYSTEM FOR WINTER MONTHS Preventative maintenance is critical for heating and cooling systems. Transitioning from hot summer months to cooler temps doesn’t require any special care, although fall and winter months still require checking and changing filters. Preventative maintenance before the warmer months keeps your system up and running throughout the year.

SUMME R L A NDSC A PING & OUT DOOR E N T E RTA INING Photography: Susan Butterworth Photography Spending time healthy at home may have you hanging out in your backyard more this summer. Whether partying on the patio or lounging around your pool, you want to be sure that your backyard style is up to par for entertaining guests. We had the pleasure of interviewing landscape designers at Dixie Yard Works, and they gave us a few tips and tricks for getting your yard in tip-top shape this summer season. Weeding and cleaning your flower beds is a great one day project to start. Pulling weeds is always easier after it has rained; be sure to don gloves when pulling problem plant life. Dixie Yard Works has a variety of products to help with the process including weed preventer granules, weed killer, weed barrier fabric, and several options of mulch and decorative rock. Before placing rock or mulch, you will need to start with edging. Edgers are an essential step for professional-looking landscaping. Begin by measuring the perimeter of the structure you would like to landscape. Landscaping should extend at least three to four feet from the edge of your structure to allow space for shrubs. After measuring the structure itself, measure the outside edge where edgers will line your landscaping. This is the tricky part. With correct measurements, the staff at Dixie Yard Works can help you determine precisely how many edgers you need to line your landscape area.

Once edgers are in place, you will choose your plants. The expert landscape team offers plant selection perfect for your style. Choose a mix of vegetation for a beautiful, dimensional design with a mix color and texture. Dixie Yard Works only carries plants that are hearty in our zone, so you won’t end up with shrubberies or flowers that die with the change of seasons in the Bluegrass State. Customers can come into Dixie Yard Works to choose their mulch or rock, or they can visit the website at www.dixieyardworks.com to view the selections. No truck, no problem! Their staff are happy to deliver, and they offer same-day or next-day delivery service yearround. Not the type to DIY? We aren’t either. Dixie Yard Works offers full-service design and installation. Their team will come out and handle everything from weeding and measuring to design and installation. Typical turnaround time on projects is four to eight weeks. Landscaping services also can include maintenance to keep your backyard looking fabulous all summer long and prep plants for fall and winter months. If you’re in need of hardscapes such as a retaining wall, patio, or outdoor kitchen, or you would like to have a structure built such as a deck, pergola or pavilion, Dixie Yard Works has you covered. We had the opportunity to check out some gorgeous homes featuring everything from fire pits to fountains and outdoor living rooms complete with fireplaces and mood lighting. Price estimates are complimentary; custom design plans are included with all contracted projects.

Heather Paulsen 4th Grade Reading Morningside Elementary School The most important advice I have for parents when it comes to reading is to have your kiddos read aloud and then talk about what they read. There are some fantastic children’s books out there! Pick up a book, read with your child, and take time to discuss the storyline: “What connections do you have to the characters and/or events? What are the characters like, and how do you know?” Use this time to dig through the reading and find evidence from the story to fuel these discussions. Even the most reluctant readers will enjoy sitting down and reading with a family member. As teachers, we are looking forward to being back in the classroom, but we are equally unsure of how that will look. The most important thing to do is to assure your child that no matter what scenario comes our way (NTI or face-to-face), their teacher loves them and will do everything they can to make the time they have together memorable, exciting, and full of learning.
Late May, we asked for nominations for your favorite school teachers in the area. We had dozens and dozens of nominations, and of those, seventeen teachers volunteered to participate. In addition to fun photos, each teacher gave helpful tips on keeping your kids sharp this summer and preparing students for what may lay ahead in the 2020-2021 school year.
How are you getting your children ready to go back to school? We would love to see! 102

to help children see the relevance and importance of having Math skills in reallife. A critical skill that all students need to have mastered by middle school is multiplication. Students can use flashcards or free online games for just a few minutes each day to enhance their math skills. The most important consideration when preparing children to return to school is their mental health and ensuring they know the pandemic has affected everyone. It is important to teach our children to be kind, to be patient, and to know when to seek help. Everyone should be kind to one another because you never know what others have gone through and are still going through during this difficult time. Students should also be patient with themselves. It is okay to struggle because it challenges them to use their problemsolving skills, to think critically, and to learn from their experiences. If your child reaches a point of frustration, encourage them to take a break and ask their teacher for help. Teaching is our passion, and that’s what we are here for.

Kelsey Hood 1st Grade Helmwood Heights Elementary School As teachers, one of our favorite things to do over the summer (besides going to the pool) is getting our classrooms organized, clean, and ready to go for our new classes. This coming year, I would encourage families to stay excited about school, whatever it may look like. We are working hard to create an environment that is fun, exciting, and safe for our students to learn. Cleanliness is more important than ever, like washing hands thoroughly and often and not touching your face, mouth, and eyes. Families can look for opportunities to practice good hand washing, wearing a mask when around others, and keeping their hands out of their mouths. Being intentional about this will ease the transition of going back to school. I look forward to meeting all my sweet new first graders, building relationships, and partnering with parents in their child’s educational journey!

The best way for our parents to keep students engaged and learning over the summer is to find something they enjoy and sneak in opportunities to practice reading, writing, and math within that activity of interest. You might also try faint on some family field trips to Kentucky parks and historical sites. These provide a hands-on opportunity to incorporate history and science learning. For your daily schedule, make reading together a priority, and allow students to read whatever interests them. The impact of reading 20 minutes per day exposes the student to 1.8 million words per year! You can also incorporate all kinds of different fun resources to practice sight words such as a paintbrush with water, Play-Doh, rocks (and while you are at it, count those rocks!), Legos – truly any type of active child play can promote continued learning during the summer. Check out one of our favorite sites to view some more great examples of creative learning during the summer: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/articles/ teaching-content/creative-summer-learning-ideas/

Crystal Goodman Kindergarten Lincoln Trail Elementary Summer learning at home doesn’t have to be scary or overwhelming. There are so many activities for kids that can be made in just a few minutes! You can go on a sight word hunt, letter hunt, create dice games, and use a deck of cards to practice ordering and comparing numbers. Even better, you can go outside and find materials to count, measure, and sort to learn math. One thing this pandemic can’t take away from us is the ability to read with our children. Cuddle up together and READ, READ, READ! Kids love to listen to their parents read. Kindergarteners need a lot of play in their day to sharpen their social development skills, so work on a puzzle, build a fort, or even look at old family photos together. Remember to keep it relaxed and fun! Getting back together in our classrooms will be so much fun! I am excited to see everyone, sing and dance, work together, and learn from each other. All of the fun things we experience in Kindergarten like singing, dancing, drawing, painting, counting, reading, and phonics will still happen wearing a mask!!!

AT HOME, YOU CAN HAVE YOUR CHILD PLAY WITH ONE THAT IS THEIR SIZE SO THAT THEY ARE FAMILIAR WITH A MASK AND UNDERSTAND THERE IS NOTHING TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT IF THEY SEE SOMEONE WEARING ONE.” —BRANDI NEWMAN

Greenspace was established in 1974 to preserve and maintain natural areas along lakes and streams in and around Elizabethtown. Through the years, additional property and easements have been acquired, adding up to 30 miles of nature trails for public use. In recent years, efforts have focused on offering a multitude of trail options, expanding accessibility for all ages and abilities, and providing several exciting events and projects. In October of 2019, Elizabethtown was recognized by the Kentucky Department of Tourism as “Kentucky’s First Urban Trail Town” and the newest member of the Kentucky Trail Town Program. Our trails have become a tremendous asset to our community, especially during the recent COVID-19 pandemic, providing mental and physical health and wellness opportunities for our residents and visitors. Recent expansions and improvements along the Greenspace Trails have included trail renovations, new bridges to include two ADA compliant bridges at Freeman Lake Park, a new paved section of trail along Cardinal Creek, the addition of eight miles of mountain bike trails along Buffalo Lake, and the completion of the 500 seat Emerald Cathedral Amphitheater along the trail at Freeman Lake. Years of hard work from dedicated volunteers and community partnerships with several local businesses, schools, scouting and civic organizations, trail users, health care providers, city and county governments, and our tourism bureau have all played a vital role in the success of Greenspace.

With Eco-Tourism, Staycations, and Outdoor Recreation on the rise, Greenspace continues to evolve as environmental stewards and expand upon the visionary leadership of its founders Mary and Ed Sprague. As a non-profit organization, Greenspace is supported through donations, grants, and special events. A few upcoming events include the grand opening concert in the Emerald Cathedral Amphitheater, a movie night at Crown Point Theatre, “The Wild and Scenic Film Festival” held at the Historic State Theater, and Trivia Night held at the Pritchard Community Center. Whether you’re a hiker, mountain biker, nature lover, bird watcher, trail runner, or just enjoy a casual stroll in nature with family and friends, we have something for you along the Greenspace Trails. For more information about dates and times of upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, or becoming a member, follow Greenspace on Facebook or visit greenspaceky.com. GREENSPACE PRESENTS THE EMERALD CATHEDRAL AMPHITHEATER: Elizabethtown’s newest outdoor venue is the 500-seat Emerald Cathedral Amphitheater located along the Freeman Lake Trail. This unique space nestled in the woods along the General Bradock Creek is another example of what a community can accomplish when working together. This community asset gives visitors to Elizabethtown another reason to explore Kentucky’s First Urban Trail Town. The venue will provide fundraising opportunities in support of Greenspace and our trails by hosting concerts, nature education programs, sunrise services, youth group meetings, regional scouting events, and so much more. The venue was built through the winter months by several Greenspace volunteers and funded in part through a UPS community grant program. Greenspace Special Events Coordinator Matt Deneen spearheaded the project and stated that a project of this magnitude involves many partnerships and volunteers and lots of support. Elizabethtown Tourism, The City of Elizabethtown, Elizabethtown Parks and Recreation and Public Works Departments, Stroub Design, local business owners, and several individuals, friends, and family members.

We live in a very generous community and are blessed to have so many involved. We were very excited to receive the UPS “Delivering on Inclusivity grant to first built an accessible switchback trail. That project served as the catalyst that evolved into the amphitheater. Several organizations and individuals played critical roles in building the new trail and amphitheater. They truly deserve much of the credit. Not only did UPS Foundation help fund the project, but their workers were active in its construction working alongside volunteers from Greenspace, KATO Excavator Sales and Services, Nolin RECC, Habitat for Humanity, Hardin County Jail, local High School Beta Club members, The Central Kentucky Wheelmen, Running Soles, Elizabethtown Lions Club, Elizabethtown Tourism, The City of Elizabethtown, Elizabethtown Parks and Recreation and Public Works Departments, Stroub Design, local business owners, and several individuals, friends, and family members.

BLOGGER SPOTLIGHT: The Love Nest
Photography: Elaina Janes Photography

Hi, Elizabethtown! I’m Jennifer, your local creator of the Instagram account The Love Nest. I was born right here in the state of Kentucky and have lived in Elizabethtown for the majority of my life. Growing up, I always wanted to put down roots in an amazing community and build a haven of my own to call home. I could not think of a better place to fulfill my childhood dreams than right here in Elizabethtown, KY. I’ve been married to my husband and best friend Paul for five years now, and while I do I make most of the creative decisions for our design choices and decor in our current home, I can’t take all of the credit. Paul puts the hard work and labor into our renovations so that this house can become our forever home. Together we have made The Love Nest possible. The Love Nest was created two years ago to provide a creative outlet for my lifelong passion for photography and newfound passion for home decor. Over the years, my account has evolved and become so much more than I could have ever dreamed of. My main goal is to share obtainable ways to turn your house into a home, but when you come to my page, you can expect to find a little bit of everything. Simple home decor ideas, lifestyle tips, easy recipes, daily life/humor, lots of videos of a spoiled rotten dog named Willie, and so much more. One of my most common questions as an influencer is how I got started. For most of my life, I knew little to nothing about the blogging/influencing world. I stumbled upon an Instagram account one day that opened my eyes to the impact that sharing helpful tips and ideas can have on social media, and it changed my world. I was instantly inspired and knew that this was the cre-
ative outlet I had been looking for. At first, I had no idea what I was doing or where to start. Fast forward to the present with a lot of hard work in between, and I am now able to share and inspire thousands of people daily on an account of my own. I hope when you visit my account, you are inspired in more ways than just home decor. I strive to make my platform a space where people can come for whatever they need that day, whether it’s a helpful tip, a good laugh, a place where they can be uplifted, or a place where we can talk about real life and get through hardships together. I am so thankful to have a platform where I can give back in so many different ways. I love being able to support and inspire not just my local community but communities all over the world. I look forward to growing and learning as I find out where this road takes me, and I look forward to all of the friendships I will build along the way.
