SIGNING FOR LEAGUE HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER WITH ONLINE REGISTRATION, WAIVERS, RULES, AND REGULATIONS. SIGNING UPUP FOR AA LEAGUE HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER WITH ONLINE REGISTRATION, WAIVERS, RULES, AND REGULATIONS.

Bluegrass Sportsplex is amazing in its own right, but there is so much more happening behind the scenes. The 103,000 square foot facility is built on dreams held tight by families in our community. Rick and Louise Davis traveled with their son Todd across the country for soccer while he was growing up. Rick has dreamed of opening the indoor sports facility for over 30 years ever since Todd was a kid playing sports in our community. The dream came to fruition in June of 2018 at the groundbreaking of Bluegrass Sportsplex. Rick finally had the opportunity to open the facility he had always dreamed of for his son, but opened instead with his son and daughter-in-law for his grandchildren and children and adults alike in Hardin County. A dream that began with an indoor soccer complex has morphed into the premier indoor sports and events venue in Central Kentucky that it is today. Conveniently located near Interstate 65 in Elizabethtown, Bluegrass Sportsplex officially opened in January 2020 and is celebrating its first anniversary this year. The Sportsplex is home to a multi-use turf field, three full-size basketball courts which can convert into five volleyball courts, meeting and party rooms, concessions, and much more. The team at Bluegrass Sportsplex invites you to Play at the Plex — to get in the game whether you are wanting to learn, practice, play, or compete. A family business at its core, Bluegrass Sportsplex is managed by Todd’s wife, Cameron Davis, and the whole family partakes in indoor leagues, barre classes, and gymnastics.

WORDS FROM A COACH

We had the pleasure of interviewing Justin Maddock, Director of Soccer for Bluegrass Sportsplex Academy, on what he loves about Bluegrass Sportsplex and the positive impact it has on our youth and in the Hardin County community: “Coaching and teaching go hand in hand. Coaching allows me to help make an impact with all ages through soccer, and I love it so much because I get to nurture a love for soccer and being active in a time when technology is so big in the world. Being active is very important for our mental and physical health, and being active my whole life is a huge part of who I am. Coaching at Bluegrass Sportsplex allows me to share that same energy and love for being active, mainly through soccer, to others while allowing me to interact with people. I am very much a social butterfly, a “people” person, and the Bluegrass Soccer Academy allows me to meet all types of kids and families. We bring mental and physical help to the whole community of Elizabethtown and the surrounding Hardin County areas! The facility doesn’t disappoint in any way. As we get through Covid, the community use and access will just continue to grow, and I cannot wait to see it!”

Adult sports at Bluegrass Sportsplex include Basketball, Soccer, Futsal, Pickleball, Baseball, Softball, and Volleyball. Youth sports at Bluegrass Sportsplex include Baseball, Softball, Basketball, Soccer, Futsal, Pickleball, and Volleyball.

BASKETBALL

Quite possibly Kentucky’s most loved sport, basketball is a popular league at Bluegrass Sportsplex. The facility has three full-size basketball courts available to rent for practices or pick-up games.

SOCCER

Calling all soccer moms — and dads — whether you’re a lover of the game and here to watch your children play, or you want to get in on the game yourself, Bluegrass Sportsplex is the place to be for indoor action year-round. Soccer is a great sport if you’re looking to try something new; leagues include Co-Ed, Men’s, and Youth.

FUTSAL

Futsal is an exciting game played on a hard surface with a smaller, harder, low-bounce ball than a regular soccer ball.

BASEBALL & SOFTBALL

America’s pastime, baseball — and softball — are fun for all ages. The facility is home to six batting cages and indoor training areas and hosts camps and clinics throughout the year.

VOLLEYBALL

With five volleyball courts, Youth leagues, training, camps, and clinics, Bluegrass Sportsplex offers something for every level of player.

PICKLEBALL

In case you’re curious, pickleball is a paddleball sport that combines elements of badminton, table tennis, and tennis. Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, much like a Wiffle ball, with 26-40 round holes, over a net.

Come in and PLAY at the PLEX! The Bluegrass Sportsplex Family: Todd, Cameron, Kyleigh & Hudson Davis How is Bluegrass Sportsplex keeping you safe and healthy during the pandemic? They’re diligently and routinely sanitizing all areas. All staff, trainers, and visitors must agree to follow proper social distancing guidelines. All staff and trainers will be wearing face masks. Anyone participating in an activity at Bluegrass Sportsplex must use hand sanitizer beforehand. They also encourage anyone visiting the facility who is not participating in a training session to please wear a mask while inside the building.

In addition to all of the fun activities for children and families, Hinton’s is the perfect date night or ladies night. long-lived success The past year has seen ups and downs, especially in business. With ever-changing mandates and Covid sweeping through Kentucky, it is more important than ever to look to businesses which have made it through decades of ups and downs, pivoting all the way, for inspiration in these trying time. Sandi Holland and Geanie Ford have been in the hair business since the 60’s and opened the doors to Head Liners Salon in 1984. With over fifty years in the industry, they have seen challenges and difficulties but also rewards. Both are up-to-date on current products, techniques, and trends and have retained a passion for their industry rarely seen today. Here we share their stories. Geanie Ford I knew right away I had found my home in choosing my profession. I love every aspect of it. It is my passion. I am a pretty self-motivated person, and like being around others that are the same. There is something every day to learn and grow in—new products, new techniques, new challenges. REWARDS: THE AH-HA MOMENTS •

When guests look in the mirror and say “I love it!”

After body treatments, facials, massages—how much better they feel mentally and physically.

When you give someone a set of eyebrows that have lost their’s to cancer; this is a heartwarming service.

Words of Wisdom: Never give up. You will have setbacks. It won’t all be wonderful, but there will be more wonderful than not. Have a passion, hunger to be better, and better at what you do. Always keep your mind and eyes wide open; never quit learning or growing.

Sandi Holland I became involved in my career at the onset! As a member of the National Cosmetology Association, I had the opportunity to train and acquire education to share and networking

1984 Geanie, Sandi, and Carolyn opened Head Liners Salon with two locations in Radcliff and Elizabethtown. 1988 Head Liners Salon moved the location from St. John Road to Starlite Center closing the Radcliff location in 1989.

and share my knowledge with others. CHALLENGES: Staffing —The challenge through the years has been to seek out self-motivated individuals to maintain a high level of customer service we’ve created. REWARDS: The loyal staff members saying “thank you for all you do for us...” THE BEST CLIENTS — The reward has been and always will be the “Thank you! I’ll be back!” and “I’ll tell all of my friends!” I have many clients who have supported us through all of the transitions—some 52-54 years! And that we say “THANK YOU!”

1999 Carolyn Baker retired due to health issues. 1999-2005 Geanie Traveled throughout Kentucky teaching continuing Education for Cosmetology. 1997-2007 Sandi traveled Kentucky and through Indiana and Tennessee as Lead Educator to provide continual education for salon professionals. 2005-2007 Geanie took extensive training with Aveda for facials and body therapy/massage and also trained in chemical peels under a company which is now known as Glo Minerals. 2007 Opened the Spa in turn giving Head Liners Salon an added name, Head Liners Salon & Spa with a staff of 20 and became an Aveda Concept Salon. 2009 Geanie trained and was certified in permanent make up. 2016 Head Liners Salon & Spa opened a lash and brow bar and Head Liners took over a workspace of 4000 ft2.

HEAD HEAD LINERS LINERS OVER OVER THE THE YEARS YEARS 1966 Geanie graduates from House of James Cosmetology School and marries Gary Ford moving to Louisville. 1968 Geanie returns from Louisville to work with “Coiffure’s by Betty Hughes” in Radcliff. Sandi Holland joined the team in August after graduating from Town & Country Cosmetology School, now known as Enspire Beauty School. Carolyn Baker joined the following year. 1970 Sandi married Don Holland. 1970 Geanie had son Jon. 1971 Geanie joined the National Cosmetology Association, holding multiple offices at a local level over the years. 1972 Sandi became a state educator. 1977 Sandi and Don’s daughter Brittney was born. 1977 Geanie, Sandi, and Carolyn became business partners with Betty and opened a second salon in Elizabethtown on St. John Road. Over the next seven years the women worked really hard, traveled on the national hair show competition circuit, and experienced many classes focusing on future trends. They felt it was time to open their own salon.

2017 Geanie trained and was certified in Microblading. 2019 Head Liners Salon & Spa restructured the business going from commissioned/salaried employees to independent contractors and relocated to the new 1500 ft2 location. They joined the Eufora Nation of Salons offering the full line of aloe-based products and Jane Iredale Cosmetics. Geanie: Although downsizing floor space and employees was an adjustment, I feel like I’m in a good place at this point. The pace is slower, responsibilities less. I can give my guests more one on one and I am still getting to do what I love. For that I am truly grateful and blessed that I am able to work.

Children’s Dental Health Month

with Elizabeth Waters, DMD, MS, Orthodontist

February is deemed National Children’s Dental Health Month by the American Dental Association. All dental professionals this month are extra excited to spread awareness about the importance of children’s oral health! These are a few questions that we get from parents about their kiddo’s teeth:

What is the purpose of ‘baby’ teeth?

Teething can be a memorable event for new parents, but it is thankfully short lived. Baby teeth are important because they allow children to eat and speak properly and hold SPACE for permanent teeth. Keeping all baby teeth until they are naturally ready to come out will prevent permanent teeth from becoming stuck or ‘impacted’.

When do I start brushing my baby’s teeth?

As soon as the 1st baby tooth starts erupting through their gums, start brushing with an infant toothbrush or damp cloth to remove the white film (plaque) that hides near the gums. Learning to take care of their baby teeth as a child will ensure that they know how to properly take care of their permanent teeth in the future.

Will my baby like brushing their teeth?

NO! They do not like it, but eventually become accustomed to the routine. A couple tips for making this transition easier: • Brush your teeth in front of them to reduce the notion that it is a scary and foreign thing to do. • Play or sing a song while brushing to attach a positive stimulus to the habit. Make it fun! There are lots of short YouTube videos for brushing inspiration. • Gradually build up the time you spend brushing their teeth, eventually making it to 2X a day for 2 minutes.

What are the best ways to establish good oral hygiene habits with my child?

Limit SUGAR intake! Sugar is one of the number one causes of oral health issues in children. According to the CDC, more than 40% of children suffer from tooth decay by the time they enter Kindergarten (CDC 2020). One of the ways to combat cavities is to offer only milk and water to drink. Sugary drinks like juice, soda, Kool-Aid, and sports drinks should be given infrequently. Use other rewards besides sweet treats for jobs well done (i.e. going to see a movie, tokens to collect for a certain toy, etc.).

We want to see your smile! If you are having orthodontic or dental work, be sure to share: Tag us on Instagram at @ElizabethtownLifestyle! 53 75

When should my child see a dentist for the first time?

As soon as their 1st tooth erupts or around 1 year old. The first visit is to get your child comfortable with the environment and the Hygienist and Dentist. Dental visits are just as important as well-child visits to the pediatrician!

When should my child start seeing an Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends making their 1st trip around 7-8 years old when permanent upper front teeth (incisors) are erupted. This initial exam is very brief and will look for any abnormalities. Only about 20% of children need ‘early’ treatment due to a bite issue or stuck teeth. This type of treatment is called Phase 1. It is limited to a short time and is performed when the child is in the mixed dentition (baby teeth and permanent teeth). Phase 2 is a longer treatment when the child has all their permanent teeth and lasts an average of two years. References: Why early childhood dental visits are important. (2020, Oc tober 08). By creating a solid foundation for dental health, children will have healthy oral hygiene habits ingrained in them from the start. Healthy teeth allow the child to maintain a healthy body and mind which is a parents’ main goal! Happy brushing and flossing!

Roderick (Eric) N. Abang, DMD, Elizabethtown Dentistry for Children Elizabethtown Native, Dr. Eric Abang graduated right here in Etown, Elizabethtown High School Class of ‘86. After high school, he attended Bellarmine for undergrad and then the University of Louisville School of Dentistry for his DMD. He completed a dental residency program for Pediatric Dentistry at Children’s Hospital of Detroit in 1999 and has been prac ticing in Elizabethtown and Louisville since then.

DENTAL HEALTH TIP: FLOSS! 79 57

Marianne Sheroan, DMD, MS Elizabethtown Dentistry for Children Dr. Marianne Sheroan graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in 2000 and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2003 specializing in Pediatric Dentistry. She has lived and worked in Hardin County since 2003. Community presence and involvement in this area is her top priority.

DENTAL HEALTH TIP: Keep two fluoridated toothpastes on hand for your child! Rather than commanding them to brush their teeth, ask them to go choose their toothpaste! Be firm in your expec tations, but invite them to be part of the process.

58

Nicholas C. Murphy, DMD, Elizabethtown Dentisty for Children Dr. Nick Murphy has been prac ticing dentistry for 32 years. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology then attended the University School of Dentistry for his DMD. He is certified through the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Pediatric Dentistry and is a member of the American Dental Association, Kentucky Dental Association, and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Married to wife Glenda, they have four children: Zac, Jordan, Alex, and Katie, plus two grandchildren Oakley and Katalina, and one on the way. In his free time, Doc tor Murphy golfs.

DENTAL HEALTH TIP: When giving children sugary drinks ( juice, milk, etc.), have them drink in one sitting. Do not allow children to sip over 3- 4 hours because of the constant source of sugar.

79 59

M. Claire Brown, DMD Dr. Claire Brown is a licensed dentist in Radcliff, Kentucky. Dr. Brown received her dental degree at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry with an Advanced Education General Dentistry residency program through the University of Florida. Her residency focused on comprehensive care for patients of all ages. In her time away from teeth, she enjoys running, snuggling her two Boston Terrier/French Bulldog mixes, and cooking with her fiancĂŠ, Reid.

DENTAL HEALTH TIP: Brush Together. Brushing habits make an impac t as kids get older when they choose to implement the prac tices they learned from mom, dad, or their caregiver. Make sure you brush with your child for two minutes, twice a day. If children observe parents prac ticing good daily dental habits, they will follow your example.

80

Susan M. King, DMD Dr. Susan M. King is a family dentist who has prac ticed in a Hardin County for over 33 years. She graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, and the University of Kentucky Dental General Prac tice Residency Program. She has been an advocate for oral health needs of our community for many years. In addition to her full-time dental prac tice, she is a volunteer faculty member for the U of L Dental School, the Red Bird Methodist Mission in Appalachia, and the Community Health Clinic in Elizabethtown. Susan King and her husband, John Ashcraft, reside in Elizabethtown with their dogs Atticus and Julep, and cats, Parker and Kitten. They share five children and five grandchildren. Dr. King’s hobbies include knitting, biking, reading, and gardening. She greatly enjoys prac ticing with her daughter, Dr. Claire Brown, in Radcliff, K Y.

DENTAL HEALTH TIP: Ac tive children sometimes have accidents that involve their teeth. If your child participates in sports, make sure that they use safety equipment properly and encourage them to wear athletic mouth guards during prac tice and games. Unfortunately, accidents sometimes happen; if they do, be sure to have a dentist evaluate any dental injuries as soon as possible to minimize the risk of long-term problems.

Local Fashion Inspiration:

Kentucky TEAM SPIRIT Type A Style Photography: Susan Butterworth Photography We’ve got spirit, yes we do, we’ve got spirit and STYLE, too! Take your team spirit to the next level with some fashion-forward outfits for GAMEDAY! I’m Amanda Burris, a fashion guru and self-taught designer. I approach fashion & interior design with a frugal eye, and I love sharing my awesome finds through my lifestyle blog, Type A Style. I’ve been thinking outside the box and have compiled some of my favorite looks for gameday. No need to drive to Louisville—all of the looks can be purchased at your favorite local boutiques right here in Elizabethtown! I’m a proud wife of a local police officer and mommy to Maverick Dean and his fur-brother, Bentley. Follow along as I find my way through life, one outfit at a time! www.typeastyle.com Instagram: @type.a.style Facebook: @typeastyledesign Amanda V. Burris

Walker Lane & the University of Louisville

Gameday and comfort typically go hand-in-hand, especially with outdoor sports, but you don’t have to forgo fashion to have them both! Take a chunky black sweater, paired with some statement leggings and a team-color-coordinating clutch and you’ll be the best dressed under the Friday night lights. And don’t forget that bold lipstick for an extra pop of spirit!

68

To the Nines & John Hardin High School Wrap me in a poncho all day long! This plaid poncho is the perfect fashion statement for a chilly game day. It keeps you warm and stylin’ with lots of spirit in the stands. Pair with your favorite jeans or leggings and you’ll be ready to cheer on your favorite red and black sports team.

Brandi’s Boutique & the University of Kentucky

My tailgating attire isn’t always what you would typically expect. I will take basic pieces and patterns in my team’s colors and pairing them into a fashion-forward outfit. To cheer on my Cats, I love to add a pop of leopard with the blue and white! Oh, and don’t forget your cute clear crossbody bag before heading into the stadium.

Ali’s Bubblegum Boutique & Central Hardin High School

I love finding pieces in my team’s colors that I can wear outside of gameday, like this baby blue dress. Versatility is the best quality to have when adding to your closet, that way you are prepared for any type of event, including gameday. This look would be perfect for a homecoming game, showcasing your school spirit and fashion sense!

69

J & J Shop & North Hardin High School

You can always find me in a ball cap. It is the best way to cover up a bad hair day, but also a way to show some spirit! While this is what you would typically see for a gameday look, I like to amplify a team t-shirt by rolling up the sleeve and knotting in the front.

Raiment + Boon & Western Kentucky University

That Cute Little Shop & Eastern Kentucky University / Bellarmine

EKU and Bellarmine are both the alma maters of my household, so we rep burgundy often. When I saw these boots, I knew I had to have them. They are the perfect statement to this unconventional tailgating style. But trust me, you will be the best dressed in the lot with this fun top, suede skirt, and matching fedora.

70

Spice up your gameday outfit with a statement top, paired with your comfy skinny jeans. I love the sleeve on this gorgeous top and how versatile it can be for both a casual and dressy style. If your favorite team colors include red, you can easily amplify your school spirit by adding a bold red lip.

Swanky Shoppe & Elizabethtown High School

Every southern girl knows how to cheer on her team in style. Dress up for your team like the southern belle you are by wearing this gorgeous navy dress. Because nothing screams the South more than tailgating, school spirit, and Draper James. Add some more team pride with a pair of matching statement earrings in your team’s colors.

Etown Wax Lash & Skin with Marilyn Delgado

Marilyn Delgado has been beautifying babes in Etown for the past three years. She has skincare treatment options—facials, dermaplaning, chemical peels, the works—for everyone and does the most beautiful lashes in all the land. Permanent makeup is another talent she posseses, perfect for anyone seeking brows that “wow.” If Marilyn isn’t available, you can feel confident booking a highly-trained team member for your service. Always remember to book appointments two to three weeks prior to your service/treatment desired date. Appointments can be made online through the website at www.etownwaxlashandskinbar.com. Read on to hear Marilyn’s story and learn more about Etown Wax, Lash & Skin. My love for esthetics started when I was a teenager. I struggled for years trying to achieve skin I felt confident and beautiful in. After many clinical visits and failed treatment plans, I decided to take the risk and meet with an esthetician to discuss some other options for my skincare. Within months of my appointment, my skin was beautifully clear. And ever since then, my love for esthetics has only grown along with my passion for helping others achieve the skin they feel beautiful in. Now, I am an esthetician, owner of ETown Wax, Lash & Skin Bar, and a trainer for Elleebana Lash Lifts & Brow Lamination. When my husband and I first moved to Elizabethtown due to him being stationed at Fort Knox, we knew we would be living here for at least three years. I researched the market for Elizabethtown and saw that there was a need for a wax, lash, and skincare studio. I’ve been self-employed throughout my entire working career, and I knew I had the passion for esthetics and the drive to open up a business, despite having just moved to the area. Opening up my own business allowed me to get creative and explore various aspects of skincare. Similar businesses to mine tend to focus on relaxation skincare, and I knew that wasn’t the particular area I wanted to focus on. Corrective skincare is my passion; I want to design skincare treatments for my clients that work and help them to feel confident and beautiful in their own skin.

Brows, lashes, facials, Botox?! We would love to see what you’re having done in 2021... Tag us in your Instagram photos and stories at @ElizabethtownLifestyle! 80

Corrective skincare is also very specialized. At ETown Wax, Lash & Skin Bar, each client receives their own unique skincare treatment. Our treatments are systemic and elemental: we add to and take away from the designed treatment plans until we find out what works for each client’s skin. Some treatments can even include a diet recommendation, light therapy, or electrotherapy, a technique that uses a low current to help tone and lift aging skin. I love my job because of the creative aspect of it. Not only are all the treatments we recommend unique, but so are our lashes. Each client will receive customized lash extension mapping that will give them a natural and unique look. I also love advising clients with preventative & anti-aging treatments, helping their skin to look and feel young. Some of our most requested services at ETown Wax, Lash & Skin Bar are lash lifts, lash extensions, Hydro facials, pigmentation treatments, injectables, and permanent makeup. I am so excited to share that here soon, we will be moving into a new building! We will be located at 114 East Dixie Suite 200, right above The Dreamery! I adore downtown Elizabethtown. It reminds me so much of back home, and I’m so excited to be a part of an area that is so important to the nature of Elizabethtown. When I first opened ETown Wax, Lash & Skin Bar, I started in a 100 square ft space, and now we are moving to a much bigger location. It brings me so much joy to see how ETown Wax, Lash & Skin Bar has grown over the last three years. As a business owner, I’m so lucky to be able to work with four amazing, smart, and talented women, and this new space will allow us to grow as a team and make more connections with our clients. It will also give me the room to train more estheticians and cosmetologists to advance their skills and positively impact even more people’s skin! I’m forever thankful for the opportunity Elizabethtown has provided me to do what I love, and I’m so excited to see new clients come through our doors and find a home for their skincare, lashes, and injectables.

Booking a photographer may be first on your list in an effort to get engagement photos done and announce your big day with Save the Dates. We are all for commemorating every moment and updating your invitees, but be sure to do your research before booking a photographer. Ask to see full wedding galleries. Anyone can post a beautiful highlight reel on the Gram, but remember that social media doesn’t always reflect reality. Read reviews. Factor in budget, but don’t be afraid to splurge because, after all, the photos of your wedding will be what you have left at the end of the day and will be shared for generations to come.

“YES!” Photography: Elaina Janes Photography I Styling & Design: Goldenrod + Glory

And now you’re getting ready to say “I do.” Congratulations! 2021 is looking a lot brighter—especially with a sparkly ring on your finger to smile down at all day. If you got engaged over the holidays, you’ve likely already been hit with questions like “Have you chosen a venue?” or “Do you have your wedding colors picked out?” The answers to these may be “YES!” as well, but if not, we have perfected a method for planning the wedding of your dreams—within budget—in record time so you can relax and enjoy your engagement.

Guest count is important because it will determine how much can be spent per guest on items such as dinner, drinks, chairs and tables, decor, cake, and invitations. Remember, the fewer guests, the more you can spend on each guest—and vice versa. If you have a $5000 catering and alcohol budget and divide that by one hundred guests, you will be able to spend $50 per guest as opposed to $25 per guest for two hundred guests. This is just a simple example but gives you an idea. Once you determine how many guests you can afford to have, allot you and your fiancé and each set of parents a quantity of guests you’re allowed to invite. Determine a date that everyone should turn in their invite list complete with addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers (for RSVP tracking). Be firm. Venue and date go hand in hand. If you have your heart set on a specific date, you’ll need to reach out to venues seeking that available date. Always contact venues— and all wedding vendors— by email and ask for availability, capacity, and pricing information. If you’re open to any date within a season, be sure to let the venues know when you reach out. You will need to schedule tours to see the places in person. Take notes of things you love and don’t love as you tour to help make your decision. You will want to book a venue within the first month of planning.

You said

BUDGET, GUEST COUNT, VENUE, DATE... In that order. Figuring out your budget is first and foremost the top priority. We like to get the difficult conversations out of the way early on, so be sure to have a sit down with both sets of parents (separately) to determine if they are willing or able to contribute to the wedding, and if so exactly how much. More often than not these days, couples pay for all or part of their own weddings. You will need to look at your household budget and determine how much can be saved each month leading up to your wedding. The budget should be based on how much you and your families can afford, not necessarily how much the wedding of your dreams costs. If you’ve been on Pinterest, Instagram, or flipping through bridal magazines, you’re likely looking at $75k-$100k events which are in more cases than not, unrealistic. Once you have determined your budget, you can divvy up a percentage of the budget to each of the major elements in your wedding. This is the perfect time to hire a planner, but in case you aren’t, I’ve included some helpful lists in this feature to simplify the process. My suggested budget breakdown can be found on page 91.

FIGURE OUT YOUR TIMELINE The average wedding lasts five hours from the moment guests arrive to the sparkler exit. The ceremony time should be set first. It should begin two hours before sunset for gorgeous, golden hour portrait lighting post-ceremony. Prior to when the wedding begins, you will need to schedule hair and makeup and determine how much time and how many stylists/makeup artists are needed to be ready in time for photos (expect 30-45 per service per person). We like to begin hair and makeup 6-8 hours before guests begin to arrive, but that is dependant on the size of your bridal party. Decor and detail photos take place either early in the day or an hour before guests begin to arrive, depending on when pre-wedding portraits begin. Either way, your photographer will likely need to arrive 3-4 hours before guests arrive. Vendors should have everything in place in time for decor and detail photos; defer to each vendor to be sure they have enough time to set up, but tables, chairs, linens, centerpieces, and basic decor typically take 4-6 hours to install. If your caterer is providing or setting up place settings, they will need to know that they are expected to have everything in place for photos. Your entertainment vendors, whether band or DJ, need to be in place and sound-checked at ceremony time as well.

If you’re getting married in 2021, we would love to follow along with your wedding planning journey!

BOOK YOUR VENDORS

Once you have a date, a location, and a ceremony time in place, you can begin researching vendors. If you have a planner, he or she can steer you in the right direction; we handle reaching out to all vendors for our clients to check pricing and availability. Even day-of coordinators should be able to give you a preferred vendor list to help you narrow down your search. Your planner will help you put together a design plan within budget to be sure your style is spread cohesively throughout the day, but if you don’t have a planner, you will need to save some images of things you love to your phone or computer to refer back to, plus allow time for researching average prices. When you begin sifting through websites and Instagram reels of wedding vendors, begin to pare down your list by style. If you wanted to book all vendors within one month, I would suggest reaching out via email the first week. Only reach out to vendors that fit your style. Make a list of 2-3 vendors that you’re interested in that fit your style and are well-reviewed, and then over the next two weeks, compare prices and packages to find the best fit. Even if a vendor seems cheap, if their style doesn’t match the vibe you’re going for, then you will not be happy with their work on your wedding day. Be sure you’re comparing apples to apples and that the time allotted in the packages is enough for your wedding day. Talk things over with your families and fiancé as you go. Once you have made your decisions, ask for contracts, and spend the final week reviewing contracts carefully, signing and paying deposits to secure your date.

88

89

CAKE & CATERING

When booking your caterer be sure to ask lots of questions about service and be aware of any extra fees that may be tacked on. Every groom’s favorite part of wedding planning is the tastings. Be sure to schedule a tasting with your bakery and caterer whether before you book or a few months before you say “I do.” A tasting can help you choose options and flavors and makes for a fun memory with your spouse-to-be.

90

STATIONERY, SIGNAGE, MENUS & ESCORT CARDS

Unlike other vendors, stationery and signage are many times purchased online whether you use a custom designer such as Studio W Designs (www.studiowdesigns.com) who designed the stationery to the right, or a corporate company like Minted. The process may take up to a month, and proofs are typically in digital format. You must allow time for addressing or calligraphy. Save the Dates should go out 6-10 months before your wedding date. If you don’t have your addresses in order, now is the time to gather those while collecting email addresses and phone numbers (to track RSVPs if necessary). Date changes have become an uncomfortable norm, but the ability to send out a mass email simplifies the process if required. Stationery suites should be ordered 3-4 months before your wedding to send out two months before the big day. Pieces should include an envelope, the main invite, a details card with reception info, and an RSVP card and RSVP envelope. Fun additions are decorative liners and wraps, curated stamps, wax seals, and maps or timelines for the weekend. Allow one month for RSVPs to be mailed in before taking the time to call and email all missing RSVP invitees to have an accurate headcount which is needed for seating charts or escort cards. Once RSVPs are in at the 30-day mark, plan and finalize your seating chart then order a seating chart or escort cards. Whether you’re looking for an entrance sign or free-standing bar menu, or you want a pretty menu at each place setting sure to make your guests’ mouths water, your stationery designer can help you select the perfect pieces to tie through the look and feel of your day. These pieces should all match your invitations for a branded effect.

WHAT TO SPEND: A BUDGET BREAKDOWN

We assign a percentage to each element based on average weddings and multiply that by your overall budget. Percentages will vary for each couple based on their priorities, but here is an example: Ceremony & Reception Venues 17% Photography 18% Planning / Coordination 8% Wedding Flowers 10% Catering 12% Cake 2% Alcohol 6% Rentals & Decor 7% Bridal Gown 5% Groom’s Attire 2% Officiant 2% Entertainment 5% Stationery 2% Wedding Day Hair & Makeup 4% This percentage scale does not include additional events such as a rehearsal dinner, a welcome dinner, a bridal brunch, showers, etc., and fun things like lounge areas, party buses, fireworks, or photo booths are nice, but they are not must-haves and are not included in this basic budget outline. The same goes for tips, gifts, and favors as what you spend can vary greatly.

Be sure to sit down with your fiancé and family to set limits everyone is comfortable with. Gourmet appetizers, petite desserts, fabulous paper products and signage, china/flatware/glassware to make your tables pop, dramatic lighting, and to-die-for floral installations are all items your guests are sure to notice. Trusting the talents of your vendors will pay off and make what your budget buys look like a million bucks.

Basic Wedding Planning Checklist

Determine a set budget dollar amount perfect for you, your fiancé, and your families. Divvy up between vendors. Devise your guest list with your families and collect addresses, emails, and phone numbers. Hire a planner now. Reach out to venues to schedule tours and collect info. Book a venue and set a date! Start wedding dress shopping. Allow 6-8 months for your gown to arrive from the designer and at the very least, one month for alterations. It never hurts to choose shoes and accessories early as well. Ask your bridal party—there are so many fun ideas for this! Choose bridesmaid gowns and have your gals order them. Have your groom get fitted for a tux and set up the account for groomsmen to begin ordering from. Select a photographer and take engagement photos. Order Save the Dates from your chosen stationery designer. Determine your wedding style with your planner, or by looking through wedding blogs and magazines or Pinterest, and saving photos. Be sure the elements you’re choosing go together aesthetically. Make a list of 2-3 vendors from each category that fit your style and have glowing reviews. Reach out to vendors via email to collect information on packages and pricing. Compare apples to apples. If you aren’t hiring a planner, we suggest a day of coordinator to manage your wedding weekend. Schedule tastings with your caterer and bakery. Review contracts carefully, checking timing and specific items included. Sign contracts and pay deposits to secure your date with your chosen vendors. Register for gifts at two to three locations. Book your honeymoon! Stationery should be ordered three to four months prior to your wedding and mailed two months prior allowing 30 days for RSVPs to be returned. Call/email missing RSVPs. If you have a coordinator, he or she will send out a detailed wedding timeline to your vendors; if you don’t, be sure to reach out and confirm the timeline with each vendor. Bridal showers and bachelorette parties are the perfect excuse to celebrate your upcoming nuptials with your nearest and dearest. If you plan to order bridal party gifts, parent gifts, favors, or welcome gifts, order one to two months prior. Finalize numbers with your vendors and pay balances. Pick up your dress and any last-minute items you may need. This is the time for last-minute spa treatments, nails, hair, etc. Pack your bags and enjoy your wedding weekend!

Justin uses a Traeger smoker; start the smoker on the SMOKE setting with the lid open until a fire is established. Heat to 180o F. You may also bake in the oven, preheat to 400o. Traeger: Place meatballs directly on a wire baking rack and Smoke for 30min then turn the temperature setting to 450o and cook for an additional 15-20min until no longer pink in the center. Oven: Bake meatballs on wire rack over a sheet pan for 20-30min or until no longer pink in the center. Carefully add meatballs to sauce and stir to coat. Justin brought these over in a Crock Pot—perfect to keep them warm from pre-game to through the fourth quarter.

ANYTHING SERVED ON A WOODEN BOARD IS NOW FANCY If you really want to impress your guests, serve your Buffalo Chicken Dip on a charcuterie board complete with a mix of chips—tortilla, Doritos, and Kettle Chips are my go tos—plus carrots, broccoli, and celery. We also added some store bought Palmetto Pimento Cheese and some homemade guac. EVERYBODY LOVES BACON Cheddar POTATO SKINS INGREDIENTS 6 Small Russet Potatoes Shredded Cheddar 6 Slices Bacon — Fried Crispy 2 TBSP Butter Coarse Salt Fresh Green Onions — Chopped Sour Cream & Ranch Dressing INSTRUCTIONS Preheat the over to 350o. We like to line a baking sheet with foil to minimize mess. Over the baking sheet, use hands to slather butter over whole, washed russet potatoes and sprinkle generously with coarse salt. Place potatoes on the baking sheet and cover with foil to bake for 30-45min or until soft. Bake time will depend on the size of the russet potatoes you use. While baking, fry bacon to desired crispness; cool on paper towels to soak up grease. Once potatoes have baked, slice in half and lay flat, skins down. Top with shredded cheddar cheese and crumbled bacon. Place in the oven for an additional 5-10min until cheese is melted. Top with fresh, chopped green onions and a dollop of sour cream. Serve hot with Ranch and sour cream for dipping.

MOODboard101

Courtney Ballard

It’s time to start planning for 2021. A fun alternative to the traditional to-do list style New Year’s Resolutions is a mood or vision board packed full of inspiration. Break out your scissors and fav magazines — Courtney Ballard is sharing her tips for a beautiful and inspiring mood board made to motivate. The one rule for creating a mood board is that there are no rules! Sheets of cork, a bulletin board, a wire grid, or a series of favorite images taped right to your wall with some washi are all great options when getting started. I love the look of oriented strand board with its funky texture, too. Choose photos, printed images, magazine and/or newspaper cutouts, catalog pages, special quotes, handwritten notes, personal mementos , etc. Everyone is different so every mood board should be as well!

Courtney Ballard is an illustrator, designer, and muralist happily living and working in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Largely influenced by a background in graphic art, she finds inspiration in color, shape, pattern, and texture. Exploring these classic themes, she seeks to create art that uplifts and engages the world around her. Drawing from a passion for typography, everyday life, and just about anything that catches her eye and makes her think, Courtney’s work presents a balance of playfulness and precision, quirky and classic.

Your board could focus on personal goals, professional aspirations, and truly whatever makes you happy. It can be wild and lively or restrained and organized. Remember! Focus on how you want to feel, not just on things that you want. The goal is to inspire your mind and spirit in this brand new year! So cut, paste, tape and pin your hearts out. Add and replace things as time passes to keep your board fresh and relevant. Here’s to envisioning a positive, happy, productive, beautiful 2021, friends!

Pandemic Innovations

“THESE VIDEO VISITS ARE REALLY JUST THE BEGINNING. ALREADY, SOME PATIENT’S VITALS ARE BEING MONITORED VIRTUALLY. THE VIDEO VISITS ARE JUST A TOOL FOR US TO PARTNER WITH PATIENTS FROM THE PRIVACY OF THEIR OWN HOME.”

Douglas Ansert, M.D., Baptist Health Medical Group Internal Medicine and Pediatrics

If 2020 has taught us anything, it is that even in the toughest situations, there is always a silver lining. In the case of the COVID-19 pandemic, Baptist Health Hardin has modified the delivery of healthcare to better meet the needs of our patients while keeping patients and healthcare providers safe. Last year made it clear that the need for technology, convenience, and safety drives new ways to provide care including video visits to connect physician and patient, curbside services to limit in-person contact, and enhanced virtual records that provide a patient’s medical history at each patient’s fingertips.

VIDEO VISITS Today, nearly 100 Baptist Health Medical Group physicians and advanced practice clinicians representing family medicine and 12 specialties in the Hardin area offer video visits for routine medical exams and follow-up. Virtual visits are conducted over a secure network connection to ensure patient privacy and easy access to healthcare providers. In 2020, the video visits allowed patients to limit their interactions with others and avoid crowds while ensuring that they stay connected to their physicians or advanced practice clinician. Video visits allow patients to communicate directly with their Baptist Health Medical Group physician or advanced practice clinician via a free, online platform on the patient’s computer or smartphone. Patients “dial in” to the scheduled video visit for an illness, routine appointment or surgical follow-up. “We are committed to keeping our patients healthy, and in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, keeping patients at home, only a click away, is a good way to do just that,” said Douglas Ansert, M.D., Baptist Health Medical Group Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. As we begin the new year and the pandemic hopefully lessens, the convenience of video visits makes this new trend a permanent fixture in patient care. In some cases, video visits allow for immediate access to caregivers. Take urgent care specialties in particular. Now patients can schedule an urgent care video visit to review symptoms and ailments. In some cases, this may prevent an unnecessary trip to the emergency department, saving the patient time and money.

CURBSIDE SERVICES AND MOBILE CHECK-IN Who would have thought that curbs would be so popular? Curbs really are having their day in the sun. In addition to food, groceries, and clothing, patients can now access important vaccines and tests while never leaving their car.

In the early days of the pandemic, Baptist Health Hardin was one of the first healthcare systems to stand up a drive-thru clinic for COVID-19 testing. This referral-based resource allowed patients to drive up, review symptoms, and receive multiple tests including rule out tests for flu and strep throat as well as COVID-19. As the year progressed, curbside services allowed for pre-operative testing of patients and caregivers ahead of surgery as well as flu shots. Urgent care locations are also utilizing mobile check-in in order to prevent large groups in the waiting room. Now patients and families can stay in their car until it is time for registration and triage. Imagine sitting in your car and not being exposed to other potential illnesses or expose others to your own illness. Patients are encouraged to download the Moblie Check-In application onto their mobile phone for their next urgent care visit or diagnostic procedure or exam.

VIRTUAL RECORDS The pandemic also made it clear that a patient’s health could change quickly and having access to virtual records is more important than ever. Baptist Health Hardin has long offered patients access to their medical records. The MyBHH Records allow patients to access their records easily. This is an important resource in the pandemic when increased testing of the large-scale volumes related to COVID-19 means that patients can access test results quicker online than waiting for a follow-up call. The virtual records are also a resource to patient families and caregivers when visitation is limited. Virtual records can be shared with loved ones, allowing them to track services and diagnostics to ensure they can advocate for their loved ones. Things are different after a year-long pandemic, but innovation has positively impacted healthcare at Baptist Health Hardin. We have learned from this pandemic, and we will continue to implement meaningful innovations, and serve our patients in this community that we hold so dear.
