Elysee Treaty

Above is a poster entitled ““50 Years of FrenchGerman Partnership. What Does it Mean to Europe?” Below is a poster on the “New Germany”

On April 9th, 2013, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Elysee Treaty between France and Germany, the Institute for European Studies at the University of British Columbia, in partnership with the Consulat generals of France and Germany in Vancouver, organized an international symposium. For more than half a century, the French-German partnership, as materialized by the Elysee Treaty and its unprecedented framework for bilateral cooperation between former enemy countries, has been at the core of the European integration project, recently honored with the Nobel Peace Prize. This symposium brought together scholars who analyzed/discussed the past, present and future of European integration & the crucial role of the German-French relations in it. Upcycle the Gyres Uses German Technology

Transforming Marine Plastic Pollution into Fuel The amount of plastic pollution swirling in the world’s oceans has dramatically increased in recent years. Upcycle the Gyres (UGS) is an environmental not-for profit society based in Vancouver, Canada with global board membership. UGS was founded to address the rising environmental impact of the large amounts of plastic pollution swirling in the world’s

oceans. It’s main aim is to recycle the floating plastic pollution from oceans and waterways to provide useful products, such as 3D printer stock, textiles, packing, diesel, kerosene, gasoline and light crude oil.

In order to do so, UGS plans to design the first floating eco-research recycling facility (FERUF), which will operate as a zerowaste, zero-emissions marine plastic research and harvesting facility vessel. Marine Plastic Harvesting

Marine plastic Harvesting is the process of recovering plastic wealth from deposits both on the surface of the oceans and from the seabed, and then transforming these waste materials into useful products. Innovative Vessel Design

Marine plastic research expeditions take time to reach the oceanic plastic convergence zones and can only spend limited amount

of time at sea collecting data and samples to precisely quantify marine plastic pollution and devise practical restoration solutions. The longest research voyage of this kind of date was less than 40 days; a longer one is scheduled from April to August 2013.

To re mediate the situation, FERUF is to provide researchers with a 24-hour, 365-day gyre (a circular ocean current) laboratory

supplied with food, energy and fresh water. It will enable scientists to determine the magnitude of the clean-up, find out exactly

what equipment and methods for ocean plastic reclamation are needed and help to develop the right solutions sooner. At the same time, the facility vessel will be capable of producing, storing and off-loading plastic -to-oil fuel.

FERUF will be designed with bio-mimicry, energy conservation and fuel and energy self-sufficiency principles, such as a greenhouse that will serve as a regenerating food bank. Economic Aspects

A preliminary feasibility study estimates total profits of CAD 100 billion after an initial investment of CAD 2.26 billion. At the beginning, the operation will cost approximately CAD 50 million. The plastic waste is floating in amounts estimated by some researchers as anywhere from 6 billion to 142 billion kilograms. Outlook

UGS is set to clean up the sea to decrease water pollution and loss of marine life, reusing plastic as a resource, using new technologies to generate a new

resource-harvesting business, to create new jobs, as well as new, sustainable end products.

http://www.upgyres.org/who-we-are/ Even kids can help to clean the plastic out of the ocean. While waiting for a ferry boat in Victoria, Natalya, age 11, found this plastic lid floating in the water and decided to “harvest it”. Every little bit counts. Do your part!
