The Large Hadron Collider, the Higgs Discovery and the Big Bang. Europe Day on May 9th is a cornerstone of European history and as the birthday of the European Union, a celebration of great importance. Nationally and locally, this day is commemorated in many different ways. In contrast to past years, the EuroFest BC Society is planning a scientific symposium in collaboration with TRIUMF on May 9, 2013, with the meaningful title “International Scientific Cooperation between Europe & Canada - The Large Hadron Collider, the Higgs Discovery and the Big Bang”. This event will feature discussions about the role of collaborative science and technology in connecting Canada and Europe. The keynote address will feature the spokesperson for the Canadian team at CERN and will highlight the tight partnerships that made the Higgs discovery possible as well as what this breakthrough means for science and society. A formal luncheon will follow accompanied by invitations to tour TRIUMF. Engagement of all European consulates is planned and the event will also feature a live video connection to the CERN Control Room. Last July’s announcement of the discovery at CERN of a Higgs-like boson has been heralded as the breakthrough of a generation if not the century. It wouldn’t have been possible without Canada, and it wouldn’t have happened without Europe. TRIUMF is Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics; founded more than 40 years ago, it is owned and operated by a consortium of 17 Canadian universities from Victoria to Halifax. NEW - GERMAN LANGUAGE MATERIALS Surrey’s City Centre Library Can Boast in German! Surrey’s newest library has the city’s largest multi-lingual collection, including books, DVDs and magazines in German. As well, the library’s Press Display database provides access to 39 German daily newspapers that users can read online within hours of their press time. Books cover all genres, including general fiction, literary fiction, romance, mystery, historical fiction, fantasy, and science fiction. Non-fiction topics include cooking, health, travel, self-help, and decorating. DVDs are all German-made films (not Englishmade films with German subtitles or voice-overs) and include German award winners from recent years.
City Centre library opened in September 2011 and has become a celebrated place within the community and beyond, winning many architectural awards for its soaring, lightinfused space and also winning the hearts of library users. It offers an in-library coffee shop with a good selection of food and drinks for those who like to linger. It is located just steps from the Surrey Central skytrain station.

Burnaby, BC March 2013 - The Swangard Stadium and the city of Burnaby will host the 16th Annual European Festival the last weekend in May. This year’s Festival brings together 30 European Countries who plan to showcase both traditional and modern customs, cuisine and cultural heritage to a growing audience. Everyone is heartily invited to come by at least one day, if not both to “spend the weekend in Europe.” The European Festival begins on Saturday, May 25th at 11 am. Highlights for Saturday include the display of the featured country, Switzerland, a 1 pm Flag Parade Ceremony, the 2 pm Children’s Only Performances, and a DJ/Band mashup until 11 pm. Visitors will enjoy Cultural Booths, a Market Place, a Trade Show, Food & Drink, Non-Stop Entertainment and activities for children. Afterwards, there will be a dance from 6pm to 11pm, where guests can still enjoy select hot food and ice-cold refreshments. Sunday, May 26th, the event will begin at 11 am, as well. Highlights for Sunday include Children’s Only Performances at noon, a talent competition at 3 pm, the ABRA Cadabra cover band at 4 pm and the official closing ceremony at 6 pm. Switzerland will be the first featured country, since 2013 marks the centennial anniversary of official relations between Switzerland and Western Canada. The Consulate General of Switzerland in Vancouver is proud to bring you this year of celebration and has set up a special website:www.swiss100canada.com to showcase what connects Switzerland and Canada. Some of these connections will be presented at the European Festival. The Festival still has opportunities for volunteers of all ages to get involved. They are also seeking professional photographers and videographers. Another new festival will feature an Art Plaza with artists from Europe. Managed by the non-profit EuroFest BC Society, the first European Festival took place in 1998 at the Alliance Francaise in Vancouver to help promote and educate local residents about the diversity and richness of Europe’s cultural spectrum. Ten countries participated in the first event and presented some of the national customs, local traditions and original cuisine of Europe. At the 1999 event in Granville Island, ten new countries joined, doubling the participants up to 20. In 2001, the Festival was held at the Scandinavian Community Centre in Burnaby for the first time, while 2012 the Festival opted to move to the spacious Swangard Stadium. The Festival takes place at the corner of Kingsway and Boundary Road in Burnaby, and is also accessible via public transit with a stop at the Patterson Skytrain Station or the 019 Bus from Metrotown. FRUIT TART WITH VANILLA - RECIPE Ingredients: 2 large eggs 1/4 cup sugar 1 dash of salt 1/3 cup flour 2 tbsp cornstarch 1/2 tsp baking powder 1 3/4 cups whipping cream 1 package instant vanilla pudding 1 small jar cherries 1 20 oz can pineapple slices 1 15 oz can mandarin oranges 3 tsp cornstarch 2 tbsp cold water 2 tbsp sugar Preparation: Line a springform pan (10 inches by 3 inches) with parchment paper and set aside. Separate eggs. Beat egg whites with 1 tbsp cold water until stiff. Beat in 1/4 cup sugar and a dash of salt. Stir in egg yolks, sift flour, 2 tbsp cornstarch and baking power over the top and fold in the egg mixture. Spread the batter in the springform pan and bake in a preheated oven at 350 Degrees for about 20 minutes. Cool completely. Beat whipping cream with the instant pudding until stiff (about 1-2 minutes) and spread over the cake. Pour the pineapple slices in a colandar and save the juice. Also, pour the manadarin oranges in a colander and save the juice. Place the slices of fruit on top of the whipped cream and decorate with the cherries. Place a cup of juice from the pineapples and mandarin oranges and 2 tbsp sugar in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Make a paste with 3 tsp cornstarch and 2 tbsp cold water. Add to the boiling juice stirring constantly until thickened. Boil for 1 minute, remove from heat, cool slightly and spoon over the fruit. Place cake in the refrigerator until the glaze thickens. Peter Limbourg (52) will be the new Director General of Deutsche Welle (DW). The Chairman of the Broadcasting Board Valentin Schmidt announced the decision after a meeting of the supervisory body on March 15, 2013 in Berlin. Upon the Selection Committee’s recommendation, the 17 members of the Broadcasting Board elected the current Senior Vice President of News and Political Information of ProSiebenSat.1 TV Germany as the successor to Erik Bettermann with a clear majority. Bettermann (68), whose term as DW’s Director General will officially end on September 30, 2013, has been in charge of Germany’s international broadcaster since 2001. During this time, he significantly shaped DW’s strategic realignment. Valentin Schmidt commented: “Peter Limbourg has outstanding qualifications to further strengthen Deutsche Welle as a modern multimedia company and Germany’s international media presence as a result. He is not only a first-rate journalist with an international background and excellent language skills, but also has extensive managerial experience in the media industry.“ Limbourg thanked the Broadcasting Board for its trust. “To have the opportunity to play such a significant role in how Germany is perceived around the world is a challenge that I will make every effort to meet in the coming years. Ever since my youth, which I spent abroad, Deutsche Welle’s programs have been a valuable part of my life experience. Together with my colleagues, I hope to further enhance Deutsche Welle’s journalistic standing and its multilingual and multimedia programming. Intensifying DW’s cooperation with Germany’s public service broadcasters ARD and ZDF is another goal I have set myself,” said Limbourg. After his military service, Peter Limbourg studied law in Bonn and passed the First State Examination of Law in 1987. From 1988 to 1989 he completed a journalistic traineeship at the German television news agency Deutsche Fernsehnachrichten Agentur (DFA) in Bonn and London. He worked as a reporter in Leipzig in the former GDR before becoming the Europe and NATO correspondent for DFA and SAT.1 in Brussels in 1990. In 1996 he became the Head of the ProSieben studio in Bonn, and in 1999 was appointed Co-Editor-in-Chief of N24 and Head of the Political Department at ProSieben, a position which he also took on at SAT.1 in 2001. In 2004/5 and 2008/9 Limbourg was the CEO of Pool TV, a joint venture of private television stations in Berlin. From 2008 to 2010 he was the Editorin-Chief responsible for N24’s programming. He has been anchor of SAT.1 news since 2008 and Senior Vice President of ProSiebenSat.1 TV since 2010. Limbourg is the jury chairman of the Media Award of the German Bundestag, a jury member for the Axel Springer Prize for Young Journalists as well as an advisor to the Media Commission of the German Bishops’ Conference. Born in Bonn, Limburg spent his childhood and youth in Rome, Paris, Athens and Brussels. He is married with three children.

Wie Mamma sich von ihre Begeisterung erholt hat, sacht sie zu Pappa: “Nu wolln wir Klein Erna ma fix überraschen, wenn sie aus Schule kommt, verstecken wir dich in Kleiderschrank und sagen gaa nix!” Wie Klein Erna nu aus Schule kommt, muss sie ja, wie immer, ers mal auf Tolette. Wie sie fertich is, kommt sie inne Wohnstube gerast und sagt ganz aufgeregt: “Mamma-, is Pappa wieder da??!” - “Wieso?” fragt Mamma ganz dumm. “Klo-Deckel is hoch!” Zwei Milchflaschen treffen sich. Kommt eine Oma in eine Zoohandlung. Da steht ein Papagei er hat an jedem Bein einen Faden. Klein Erna sitzt an Steuer und Heini rudert denn los, dass ihn das nur so von sein Gesicht runterläuft. - So nach einer Stunde fragt er denn Klein Erna: “Sind wir denn noch immer nich in Blankenese?” “Nee”, sagt Klein Erna, “muscha ers mal losbinden!”

Managing the increased need of specialized skills in planning and execution can be handled through substantiated advanced training. This program is your chance to step into this building standard of the future already today and become a first mover in the growing market of energy efficient building.
The participants will be accomodated in a passivehouse student home which makes the experience of living in a passive-house even more tangible.
In this program knowledge from different fields of study like architecture, building engineering, social sciences, design, urban planning, economics and other relevant fields of work will be combined. The aim is to prepare this knowledge centrally for the participants to sharpen their perception of sustainable and environmentally friendly methods and techniques of modern constructing e.g. passive house standard.
Furthermore there is a scholarship program which is financed by several austrian companies and organizations which will assure the pariticipation at lower costs for selected students. von S3 sind die Entwicklung, der Bau, die Zertifizierung und der Betrieb von suborbitalen Space Shuttles für die Lancierung von
Kleinsatelliten. Dank einem innovativen System wird eine Lancierung bis viermal preiswerter als heute und demokratisiert damit den Weg ins Weltall. Erste Testlancierungen sind für Ende 2017 geplant.
Ein Schweizer Unternehmen mit bedeutenden internationalen Partnern Swiss Space Systems wurde am 13. März 2013 im Beisein von Vertretern des Kantons und der Gemeinde, hohen Würdenträgern und diplomatischen Vertretern aus acht Ländern eröffnet. Sie feierten die Gründung dieses neuen Unternehmens, das die Entwicklung und den Bau von suborbitalen Space Shuttles für die Lancierung von Kleinsatelliten mit einem Maximalgewicht von 250 kg zum Ziel hat. Die ersten Testflüge sind für 2017
geplant. Der Terminplan ist ehrgeizig. Pascal Jaussi, Gründer und CEO von S3, unterstreicht aber: „Unser Lancierungsprogramm profitiert von wegweisenden Partnerschaften zwischen Akteuren der Raumfahrt wie der Europäischen Weltraumorganisation
(ESA), Dassault Aviation, dem Von Karman Institute und Sonaca und ihren bereits vorhandenen und zertifizierten Technologien.“ Dank der Einbringung dieser Technologien, die vom Hermès und X-38 Programm übernommen werden können, kann S3 in der Forschung und Entwicklung Zeit und bei der Produktion Kosten sparen, um die Vorgabe 2017 zu erreichen. Das Budget beläuft sich auf 250 Millionen Franken. Hätte man bei Null beginnen müssen, wären mehrere Milliarden nötig gewesen.
Ein einfacheres, sichereres, effizienteres und vor allem wirtschaftlicheres Lancierungssystem Swiss Space Systems schlägt
ein Lancierungsmodell vor, in dem ein Airbus A300 zum Einsatz kommt. Das Flugzeug ist für Schwerelosigkeitsflüge bereits
zertifiziert und wird den Shuttle für die Lancierung auf eine Höhe von 10’000 m transportieren. Die Entwicklung des Shuttles
verbindet die vom Franzosen Dassault für Hermes entwickelte Innenarchitektur und die externe Struktur der belgischen Firmen Sonaca und Space Application Services. Die Gespräche über den Lieferanten des Motors sind bereits weit fortgeschritten. Die
Shuttle-Drohne steigt dann auf eine Höhe von 80 km, um dort den oberen Teil zu lancieren und die Satelliten in ihre Umlaufbahn zu bringen. Nach Abschluss der Lancierung kehrt der Shuttle zur Erde zurück und gleitet zu seinem Ausgangsflughafen zurück. Dort übernehmen ihn bis zur nächsten Lancierung die Wartungsteams. Das von S3 entwickelte System bietet hinsichtlich
Sicherheit eine Vielzahl von Vorteilen: Über den ganzen Prozess der Lancierung kann dieser abgebrochen werden, um den Shuttle auf die Erde zurückkehren zu lassen. Dank der mehrmaligen Wiederverwendung der Lancierungselemente und dem weit unter der heutigen Norm liegenden
Treibstoffverbrauch wird Swiss Space Systems Satellitenlancierungen für 10 Millionen CHF anbieten können. S3 ist also bis zu viermal günstiger als die gängigen Marktpreise. In der Regel bedürfen Trägersysteme einer grossen
nfrastruktur am Boden. Für S3 reicht ein Flugplatz, auf dem ein Airbus A300
starten und landen kann. All dies fördert die Demokratisierung des Alls. Länder
und Forschungsinstitute, deren Mittel bislang nicht ausreichten, können nunmehr Satelliten lancieren lassen. S3 hat bereits Vereinbarungen für vier Lancierungen mit dem renommierten Von Karman Institute abgeschlossen.

Just in Freybe Gourmet Foods has been sold for $55 million dollars, after having been in operation in Canada for 169 years. Ulrich Freybe came to Canada in 1955 and relocated the German company to downtown Vancouver. Henning, his son, took over from Ulrich in 1970, and Sven took over as President and CEO in 2009.
