For those of you who do not know me, I am Elke. I was born in Toronto, ON and came to BC at age 2. At age 5, I started attending the Surrey 5 German Language School, where I finished nine years later. In 1995, my husband and I moved to Sydney, Australia, where I managed to get 6 a job as an “Authorised Supervisor” of the Preschool of the Johannes Gutenberg German School. 7 In the year 2000, we came back to Vancouver. In 2005, I opened 8 up a nanny agency for Germans, Swiss & Austrians, but that didn’t pan out, although was a great experience. Finally, in 2007, I began 9 my first issue of “German Voices Vancouver Newsletter”, which 10 morphed into Westcoast German News as you see it today. Putting a magazine together is a lot of hard work. I create content, sell ads, find 11 subscribers and am always actively seeking sponsors who like the idea of a German-Canadian publication, which is a unique, one-of-a-kind 15 product that exists no where else on earth! 5

I think it is just too bad they didn’t stay relevant and are offering a “museum approach to German Culture” as someone so colourfully expressed. That is why I am hoping to have at least this magazine as a small replacement, where people can learn about events, people, places and things Austrian, German & Swiss. Realizing that you are not alone as a German Speaker, although you are living in a city of millions, like Vancouver or Portland, or Los Angeles. Introducing the S-Bahn Band I would like to start this edition of Westcoast German News by mentioning my favourite German band: S-Bahn. Singer & accordionist Richard Tyce founded the S-Bahn Band in Vancouver in the early 90’s. With a diverse and eclectic repertoire, the S-Bahn specializes in Oktoberfests both in Canada and the US. Highlights include the “Fall Crawls” during which the S-Bahn tours the Oktoberfest circuit. The S-Bahn plays Thursday, September 17th, 2015 at the Mount Angel Oktoberfest at 9:30 pm in the beer garden/Biergarten. General Consul Josef Beck Consul General Josef Beck is happy to be in Vancouver. I arranged to meet him to ask a few questions about him and his work here in Vancouver, to share with my readers. 1. What were some of his postings? After graduating from the University of Göttingen in economics, Josef Beck started working for the Department of Foreign affairs in Bonn. In 1982, he worked at the German Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels. Between 1984 and 1987, he worked at the German Embassy in Kinshasa, the capital of The Republic of Zaire, a central African state, now known as the “Democratic Republic of the Congo. After working at the NATO Dapartment in the Foreign Office, Consul Beck worked in Quito, Ecuador as Deputy Ambassador. He then joined the political department of the German Embassy in Washington, DC. After this posting he became Deputy Consul General in Los Angeles for five years. He moved to Prague to head the Economic Section ot the German Embassy. From 2008 to 2011, Consul Beck was Director for the Andean Countries in the Foreign Office. Recently, from 2011 to 2014, he served as Ambassador of Germany in Jamica, with responsibility also for the Bahamas, the Turcs and Cacos and the Cayman Islands. He worked one year in the World Bank on climate change, before coming to Vancouver. Consul Beck has a great interest in climate change and feels that this is today one of the biggest challenges for all countries. Germany’s Energiewende or energy turnaround initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by increments starting at 40 per cent by 2020 or up to 80-95 per cent by 2050. Consul Beck hints to the great importance of the 2015 United Nations Cimate Change Conference, whose objective is to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on fighting climate change (Nov 30th to Dec 11th, 2015). He feels that the outcome of this Conference will greatly impact on the future of all countries including Canada & Germany. 2. Where will he reside and what made him choose this location? Consul Josef Beck lives in West Vancouver as it is close to downtown and allows him to fulfil his social obligations in a lovely setting. 3. Where is he from in Germany and where does he consider home? Consul Beck was born between Lake Constance and Black Forest in Bärenthal, a small village in southern BadenWürttemberg, Deutschland. He still likes to visit his home state and travel around the area to visit friends and family at least once a year. 4. How is he planning to celebrate the 3. of October this year? Consul Josef Beck plans to keep the venue of the Shaughnessy Country Club the same and hopes to offer a worthy reception to honor the 25th anniversary of the reunification of Germany. 5. Will he be attending the “Deutscher Platz” celebration? Yes, I have gladly accepted the invitation to take part in the celebrations.

Recipe for Oktoberfest 1.

Teach the audience all the right dance moves. 5. Ensure at least some activities for the next generation. Don’t forget the Bratwurst! Eat. Drink. Repeat.

Big Bear Lake Expands! The Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest begins Saturday, September 12 and runs for eight consecutive weekends through Saturday, October 31. The weekend festivities takes place at The Convention Center located at 42900 Big Bear Blvd. Big Bear Oktoberfest kicks off with American’s Hero weekend on Saturday, September 12 offering free admission for all past and present military, fire fighters and law enforcement officials. The first three weekends admission on Saturdays is $14 for adults, $10 for seniors (62+), and $8 for children 12 and under; Sunday admission prices are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and children 12 and under FREE. The next five weekends general admission on Saturdays is $18 for adults, $14 for seniors (62+), and $9 for children 12 and under; Sunday admission prices $9 for adults, $7 for seniors with children 12 and under FREE. The new beer garden, called the Warsteiner Buden Strasse Biergarten, was constructed to offer patrons a more comfortable social area with additional beer service and outdoor seating. Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest Adds Biergarten, Extra Weekend and Promotions One of the major attractions that set Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest apart from other Southern California Oktoberfests is its engaging non-stop entertainment, wacky German antics and special contests. A new stage was added in 2013 to give festival goers more entertainment and keep a lively atmosphere throughout the festival grounds. 2015 Calgary Oktoberfest

Alberta Beer Festivals presents the 3rd annual Calgary Oktoberfest September 25th & 26th at the Upper Big Four Building on Stampede Park. “Prost! Calgary Oktoberfest is a celebration of food, community and craft beer! Why Oktoberfest?

1. Crown Prince Ludwig, was married to Princess Therese of SaxeHildburghausen on October 12, 1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the happy royal event. 2. The fields were named Theresienwiese (“Theresa’s meadow”) in honor of the Crown Princess, and have kept that name ever since. 3. To end the celebrations from the Royal wedding on 17 October, horse races were held in their honor. The decision to repeat the horse races in the subsequent year gave rise to the tradition of the Oktoberfest. 4. Munich assumed responsibility for festival management in 1819, and it was decided that Oktoberfest be made an annual event. 5. Activities can include an agricultural show, horse racing, tree climbing, carnival rides, as well as up to 7.7 million litres of beer & local specialties like Hendl, Schweinshaxe, Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Würstl along with Brezen, Knödel, Käsespätzle, Reiberdatschi, Sauerkraut or Rotkohl/ Blaukraut along with such Bavarian delicacies as Obatzda and Weisswurst (a white sausage).

Living the Dream! When Cora Schupp started her “Masterpiece Floor Maintenance Ltd.” business in 1986, she never dreamed that it would someday lead to her writing a book. Lessons learned were concepts like “Being on time means being five minutes early”, “Let your yes mean yes” and “Work first, then play.” Schupp also likes to meet her deadlines, plan well ahead, be organized, precise and detail-oriented.
