C CKEYED
BUT WHAT IS BEAUTY?
Hello Welcome Ey up! We’re the Cockeyed family, and we’re so glad that you’re here. Cockeyed is a new zine for the fun, fabulous and fearless out there! In this house we’re all about the raw, real and of course the hilarious and brilliant. We want you to flick through these pages and be inspired, just like we have been. Each issue of Cockeyed is going to take a light hearted but true look at a different theme or topic going on in that big old world out there – and we want you to join in. There’s always room for more in this family! In each issue we will announce the theme for the next, and if it inspires you or you have something to say, give us a shout and submit it – you may just see your work on our pages. Whether you’re an illustrator, a graphic designer, a photographer, a fashion designer, we love it all! Writing this is pretty exciting for us, this is our first issue, the big no.1! Which meant we didn’t want to go half arsed with what we were going to fill these pages with, that’s not our style! Beauty is everywhere, it’s all around us, and the world we live in is filled with it. However in every generation and era man made standards for this beauty appear – where from, we’ll leave that to you to decide. The Cockeyed family think those standards, put mildly, are poop! Complete and utter poop! With this in mind we present to you; The Antithesis of Beauty. An issue devoted to seeing through the stereotypes and finding the real, raw beauty in this world. Exploring people’s honest, fabulous visual views on the fakeness that we unfortunately find around every corner.
EDITORS LETTER

NAME: ELENA FOUX AGE: 22 GENDER: FEMALE
What is your job/occupation? Or what do you study? I am on the last level (5th) of Graphic Design course in British Higher School of Art & Design. I’m working as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator and sell my artworks as an artist. What magazines do you read on a regular basis? Sometimes I read Another mag, Dazed, i-D. How do you feel about the content in these magazines? I get the inspiration in terms of fashion, style and composition. How do you feel about the way people & beauty are represented in these magazines? To my mind, it’s contemporary fashion and style presented on the background of the modern life.
How do you feel about the way people & beauty are represented in magazines such as Vogue, Bazaar, ID etc? I think that Vogue and Bazzar ‘sell’ the cliche of beauty. It is a bit boring because it shows only canons of beauty that are not exciting anymore - they are too old. As about i-D, it is more interesting in terms of presentation of fashion and beauty. What is your opinion on fashion adverts & editorials? It depends on adverts and editorials. Sometimes it’s just a beautiful picture, sometimes it WORKS. Do you prefer written or visual content when reading magazines or zines? I prefer the smart combination. However, sometimes text can become a picture, sometimes a picture doesn’t need any explanation. What are 3 words to describe your ideal magazine or zine? Smart, exciting, remembered.

GRAPHIC DESIGNER, GINEVRA, GIVES US HER INSIGHT INTO BEAUTY MAGAZINES.. NAME: GINEVRA MANDELLI AGE: 24 GENDER: FEMALE What is your job/occupation? Or what do you study? Now my main job are my drawings however I also work as a graphic designer for an architectural firm. What magazines do you read on a regular basis? 1. WAD Magazine 2. Velvet 3. Vogue 4. Black Magazine 5. Edelweiss Magazine (from Switzerland) How do you feel about the content in these magazines? I love WAD magazine for their graphics and the interviews with young designers. There are ads but they also see it as an art form and not commercial like in magazines such as “Elle. It is never banal and always suggests good things, new places, artists etc.
How do you feel about the way people & beauty are represented in these magazines? The problem, unfortunately, is the stereotype of beauty in these magazines. Our brain is used to seeing skinny girls, hairless, with long legs in all the magazines and advertising and so now we are shocked when we see the opposite. Fortunately feminists around the world are pissed and some get the victory.
How do you feel about the way people & beauty are represented in magazines such as Vogue, Bazaar, ID etc? Obviously the magazines prefer to use this model of beauty to sell. Not only is a model of beauty but it is also a model “sex” and sex is a product, or perhaps one of the products that make the most money. For years and years you hear stories about hair removal for example, this view will not change quickly, but I hope it will change. The TV and the company today has brainwashed for years and still there are stupid ideas like “the hairs are for men.” I’ve actually found amazing online magazine, they have more freedom. What is your opinion on fashion adverts & editorials? I think that most of the magazines mainly think of the money and not for the real purpose of the magazine.
Do you prefer written or visual content when reading magazines or zines? I love reading. But I admit that the image often attracts my eye. What are 3 words to describe your ideal magazine or zine? Democracy, discoveries, freedom.

THEEYEOF THEBEHOLD ER Whether it’s Instagram, Youtube, TV or the cover of Vogue the most beautiful people, or those society, the media or heck, maybe even the illuminati, want us to think are the most beautiful, are everywhere! And we mean everywhere! However it’s no secret to most that children look at this world, and everything in it, a little differently than we do. They see beauty and magic in even the littlest, simplest of things, they don’t care how many likes or hits it has! It is this raw, unbiased and beautiful view of the world that we wanted to share with you, as it is something we find intriguing, inspiring and simply fabulous. The Cockeyed family took the images of some of the women viewed as most beautiful in today’s terms, and gave them to a bunch of kiddies with one ask; draw what you see! Cara D, Jennifer L and more were popped onto paper by the kids we had the privilege of meeting, and the results were perfection! On the coming pages of Cockeyed you’ll be able feast your senses on the translations of 2016’s top beauties by some of the next generation.
We hope you enjoyed flicking through the pages of Cockeyed, and found some inspiration within the work, just as we have. Beauty is all around us, and unfortunately so are the harsh pressurising standards of beauty and perfection; so wanted to share with you the real beauty that we know and love. For the next issue of Cockeyed the big theme is, gender! So if you have something to say around this, and are an artist, illustrator or creative and want to see your work or thoughts featured in Cockeyed send your submission to; cockeyed.submissions@hotmail.co.uk We look forward to hearing and seeing all that you guys have to offer on this super exciting topic! We can’t wait!
