Well known for her role as Shria in Imbewu: the seed, one would describe Kajal Maharaj as a breath of fresh air when she walks into a room. Someone with a bubbly personality carried with poise and sophistication. Her down to earth and humble personality makes her a beautiful soul, inside and out, always looking for ways to uplift and empower others. Being an actress, entrepreneur, influencer, wife and mom, we take a look into Kajal, behind the scenes.

4 | Ella - August 2020

W I T H

Family first Kajal is the proud mom of two boys, 5 year old Zorion and 4 year old Kyros. "That on it's own is my greatest achievement. My family is my everything, they really do come first and are my greatest blessings." She is also the proud wife of Nesan Pather, well known in the entertainment and digital marketing field. "He has supported my every dream and career choice. We are the example of growing together and truly building a home filled with love, respect and adventure. Our children keep us on our toes and sometimes the days can feel like a whirlwind but we all hold onto each other and when it passes, we look into each other's eyes and we know that we are not alone."

How it started Kajal has always been an over achiever, starting with extra curricular drama classes at the age of 3. From the age of 5, she was entered into beauty pageants. "I learnt how to speak my mind, I learnt how to work as a team and shine in my own special way." She studied Drama in high school and went on to study it at university. "From there I networked, I prayed, I believed, I auditioned, I fine tuned my skill, I found every opportunity I could, and built my brand.' Kajal qualified with a Bachelor of Social Science majoring in marketing, media & communications and drama. She is also a qualified Makeup artist and trained as a dancer. So what made her go into the acting world? "Acting was in my blood. At times in my life when I ventured into the corporate world and became a marketing manager, there was always a nagging gut feeling that I should be pursuing my passion. It may have taken a long time but it happened."

Imbewu: the seed It all started when she was invited to audition for the character Shria Rampersadh for Imbewu: the seed, a South African soapie that is filmed in Kwa-Zulu Natal and airs on e.tv every weekday. "I cried when I found out that they chose me and it changed my life forever. I love this show with all of my heart." Shria is a workaholic and very focused on her career. "She always has a plan and is one step ahead of everyone else. However, like any human being. As her storyline is constantly changing due to the fact that she is such an interesting character, it certainly causes a lot of drama that keeps viewers entertained." As sad as it was, Kajal A day in the life says her favourite "Imagine a stunt artist performing scenes to shoot stunts on repeat, all while trying to keep have been when one ball in the air without dropping it. That's Shria mourned a day in my life. I am sure people may assume the passing of that I have an assistant to do things for me her father. As but I have a very controlling personality and I an actress, like to do almost everything myself, which "I got the includes the cooking and the cleaning. There chance to are long hours of acting on set everyday, and really dig coming home to being a wife and a deep and live mother. I also find time to meditate and an emotional exercise. I find time to invest in myself by truth that was growing my soul, abilities, personality breath taking to and finding a lot of moments to watch. I put my help people on the daily." heart and soul into those scenes."Â

A journey with Endometriosis

Kajal refuses to live her life with limitations and she held the same mindset when she was diagnosed. "It was difficult to fall pregnant but on top of that, it is a very painful condition. " Kajal says that one of the most important things she earnt within the 5 years that she battled with this condition, is that prayer and hope is all that you can hold on to. Her endometriosis led to fertility problems but Kajal was convinced that she would be a mother. "I worked with a homeopathic Doctor and changed my entire lifestyle. I gave up gluten and sugar, ate fresh, healthy food and did acupuncture treatments weekly. I lived in a way to help my body function in a healthier way . Today I do not suffer with endometriosis and I am blessed with two miracle babies, both conceived naturally."Â

Women's month is a time to empower and show appreciation to the females who do so much on the daily.

...prayer and hope is all that you can hold on to Celebrating women "My mother, first and foremost will always be the greatest woman that I admire, who inspires me. She is close to home and I have watched her strength move mountains. I have watched her weather the storm and come out on top. She is my daily inspiration." "Women's month is a time to empower and show appreciation to the females who do so much on the daily, who fight silent fights, who build and support families, who achieve in a world of solitude. It is a time for women to know that they are seen and are not alone!"

It's a beautiful time to be a women.

Embrace it. I have learnt that as women, we need to be kinder to ourselves. We are critical and judgment on ourselves. We feel guilty for living, for accomplishing, for achieving. We spread ourselves thin by being born nurturers We always need to make sure that everyone is ok. But we need to stop to make sure that we are ok. Investing in yourself is not a crime, it is a necessity. Don't feel bad to ask for help. It doesn't make you weaker, it makes you wiser. You got this! And no matter what, you are doing the best you can. Be proud of yourself." 8 | Ella - August 2020

hat a surreal time to be alive! A mere 5 months ago Covid-19 was not a concept that many of us had ever heard of before. Now face masks and sanitizers have become a big part of our daily lives. It’s always best to look on the bright side, to find the “silver lining” and it’s now time, more than ever, to put a positive spin on these face masks. forever

The primary purpose of a face-mask is to act as a physical barrier to protect you and others from viral and bacterial particulates in the air. But why stop there. These masks can also be an additional accessory like a wrist watch or piece of jewellery. Many people have asked me what the “do’s and don’ts” are in selecting and wearing a face mask. Firstly, remember that most times these masks are worn for extended periods of time, be aware of the fabric choices you make. Cotton is one of the best options. Not only is cotton more hygienic, but it is cool and comfortable to wear. Always try and opt for a 3 ply mask which are more effective as a barrier, but also the added filtration layer acts as a fabric stabiliser which gives the mask more body. This prevents the fabric from touching your mouth

mouth and creates an air pocket, making it easier to breathe. Masks these days come in every style and colour. I have had every request imaginable from clients of all ages, ranging from beads and lace for a bride to elegant matching mask for a matric dance and a unicorn rainbow with rhinestones, there is a mask for everyone. Don’t be afraid to experiment or try something new. Your mask can coordinate with what you are wearing or be a pop of colour to add to your ensemble. Since we can no longer share our smiles why not use your mask to express your mood. Seeing your mask as an accessory instead of a hassle will change your perspective and allow you to have a little fun in this trying time. Let your mask be true to your personality and don’t take it too seriously!

How it began Ms. Waffles was established in March 2019 and launched on the 7th of April 2019. Ms. Waffles is a modern twist on the traditional Belgian waffle, created by owners Mallory & Segan. The mission in mind was to develop a Great Gourmet Waffle… On a Stick! We wanted to bring together a sophisticated (but cool) street food dessert that ANYONE with good taste and a sweet tooth could enjoy in the street food markets.

The secret ingredient

Waffles W I T H

The creamy waffle batter was mastered in the kitchen of a passionate mum & dad, who believed in the dream of their entrepreneurial daughter. So, with a dash of inspiration, a dollop of decadence, a spoonful of flavour and a sprinkle of love, the mum created the most delicious “crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside” waffle you could ever bite into.

Our journey Our little venture started on the 'streets' of the beautiful city of Durban. At the inception of our venture we decided to never compromise on the quality of our ingredients. One of our defining ingredients (and one we are exceptionally proud of) is our imported Belgian chocolate that is used to cover our waffles. The smooth, velvety Belgian chocolate is available in Milk, White, Dark, Caramel & Ruby Cocoa, giving our tasters limitless options to experience different flavours of decadence. To complement our chocolate splendor, we also offer a range of exciting toppings, each of which was individually selected to cater to a specific taste preference. We also cater and tailor make packages for Parties, Weddings, Traditional Pre-wedding Celebrations, Events & Office Parties, giving you the opportunity to host your guests to a fabulous live waffle station.

Where we are now In July 2019 we were given an opportunity to open our first store, which is based at 199 Peter Mokaba Road, Morningside Durban. We are inside The Foodbox. We have extended our menu and have added “Waffle in a cup” and “The Traditional Round Waffle”. We highly recommend our popular Traditional Waffle – The Rolls Royce

Abigail Nepaul

Attorney, Notary, Conveyancer, Empowerment Coach & Speaker

Your products/services :

Teen girl and woman empowerment coaching, Inspirational Talks.

Challenges you faced :

A

bigail is a 38 year old wife and mum to two girls and works with her husband at his law firm, Attorneys Anand – Nepaul. She has her own business called Abigail Nepaul Coaching which started 6 years ago.

Where did it start? ·

I was lucky to have had an opportunity to work as a radio presenter for Lotus FM for 10 years. I was also a first year law student at the time. When I left radio I started researching life coaching courses. I registered for an overseas course and loved every minute of it. I then registered for a teen girl coaching course for my niche, becoming the only certified teen life coach in South Africa at the time. After about 4 years I felt called to work with adult females as well and I started my coaching business to help support woman.

I became a first time mum about a year after starting my business and I chose to be with my baby more than on building my business during the first year. This caused the business to stagnate. I still work as an Attorney so I need to set aside time to work on my business. Teen girl and woman empowerment coaching is still fairly new in South Africa so marketing my business and educating the masses has to happen on a regular basis.

· Your aim :

I want to help woman: acknowledge and release their limiting beliefs, understand the power they have to create a life they love so much more.

Your message to women : ·

Sometimes the challenges of life causes us to put on a mask and be the woman society expects us to be. You have everything you need within you to live your best life. Only you can decide to take off the mask and reveal who you really are and only you can decide to go after everything you truly want. If the idea, thought, or image is in your mind you are supposed to achieve / have it.

Eloïse Engelbrecht Founder - Haus of Ellagance Cosmetics

E

ntrepreneur & Celebrity Makeup Artist, Eloïse, always loved makeup just like any other little girl did. She learned a few things from watching her mother do her makeup and the rest she taught herself by watching tutorial videos. Later she decided to go for a proper Makeup course and get a diploma.

Where did it start? Funny story actually, I wanted to start a makeup academy in Cape Town. When I started planning which products I wanted to use, I wanted affordable yet high quality products which was not really available in South Africa. Brands like Colorpop and Morphe. I decided to start my own brand with the same quality.

Your products/services

Eyeshadow palettes, Foundations, Lipsticks, Liquid Highlighters and blush palettes. I offer my services as a Makeup Artist and my private label business is now open for beauty entrepreneurs who want start their own business in the beauty industry.

Challenges you faced :

Keeping your mind positive and focused no matter how many things go wrong or how many doors close. It is easy to want to give up and call it a day, the challenge is to continue and silence the negative thoughts with positive ones.

Your aim :

To grow into a well–known cosmetics empire. I want to inspire women, that our past doesn’t define you or your future and with the right mind set and goals and plans, nothing can stop you.

Your message to women : To be successful, you have to jump. There’s no way around it. Every successful person has jumped. You have to take a leap of faith off that cliff and jump out there as far as you can. When you jump I can assure you one thing; your parachute will not open right away. That’s the fear part. You’re going to hit some sides and rocks. You’re going to get wounded and cry a lot. But, eventually, your parachute will open. And you will soar! If you do not jump your parachute will NEVER open!

Helping all the Furkids Furkid Feeding Network is a NPC that started during Lockdown in Durban. They feed pets whose owners can not afford to feed them, endeavouring to stop the surrendering of pets and provide some relief for shelters. Cyan Brown is the founder of this NPC and through her amazing work, many pets can continue to live healthy and happy lives with their families.

28 | Ella - August 2020

It all started with Cyan Brown, who was managing the social media for an animal rescue organization in Ballito. She saw an influx of requests for pet food from families no longer able to feed their pets. This put a strain on the organization who was already trying to feed their shelter dogs. 'I foresaw a major problem heading our way in the form of surrendered pets because Pet owners were experiencing unexpected financial difficulty on a large scale and I didn’t know how an already strained animal welfare sector was going to cope.' So Furkid Feeding Network was born from a great need in the Durban area. With the help of a network of volunteers, they have fed 134 animals over 4000 meals in the last two months. This has allowed pets to stay in homes where they are loved. 'As financial distress spreads the need for food is ever increasing. Sometimes we spend over R2000 on food in one day. So although I use my own small income donations are vital to us being able to help as many people as possible. '

'I see helping these animals as a way to honour the love my own animals have given to me. It is my privilege and passion to help as many pets as I can. '

Inspiring through art

W

ho Am I? Lulufiya; Entrepreneur, Life Coach and self-taught Artist. The difference is that I do not focus on tools or use conventional tools but focus on color and movement to evoke emotion. Each piece reflects my soul and an extension of who I am. It conveys feelings and emotion that I sometimes cannot quite express through words. It is a world in which there are no rules, no judgement, and no expectation, but rather a world in which I can express freely.

Art is my way of leaving those emotions behind me. I feel it, channel it, create and then walk away, sometimes I tend to go back to add more detail. It is diverse and complex but unique and beautiful in its own. My Inspiration and Motivation? I am inspired by many things. Emotions and Energy because I experience many of them in my internal landscape. People I have met, places I have been to or simply how I am feeling in that moment. Each painting has a part of me in it and always has a deeper meaning. My motivation comes from me wanting to be the best version of myself. For my family. for other women and young girls who are going their journey, discovering who they are, realizing their worth, their power and their voice. Most importantly, for myself. Part of the reason I continue to do this is

so that I can help empower and uplift women. I believe beauty comes in different forms and there is a profound beauty in every one of us. Take the con out of

contractor

This week we had the pleasure of interviewing Gavin Welsh, founder of a new online platform called CheckerTrader. What prompted you to build Checkertrader :

I’m a builder by trade, and I understand how the contracting industry works from the inside - it’s not always pretty. In recent years I’ve seen a massive influx of fly-bynight contractors popping up usually advertising in Facebook groups or illegally on street-pole ads. It's very challenging to hold a rogue contractor accountable for something. I’ve met too many people that have been cheated out of their hardearned cash, and honestly, it makes me furious. So, I decided to create a platform where the South African public could go to find someone trustworthy to complete their jobs

I decided that I’d only accept applications from contractors who were qualified, insured, proud of their work and most importantly willing to be held accountable. To date, I have rejected 60% of the applications that have come through. Who is CheckerTrader for?

It is for anyone in South Africa who is looking for a reliable contractor. We have over 50 categories of contractors to choose from. That includes builders, plumbers, electricians, garden services and so much more. The great news is that every single member has been vetted and verified and is held accountable for their work. Right now, we have been focusing our efforts on KZN, as CheckerTrader is entirely self-funded, and we are growing organically - but we do have contractors spread across the country.

Is there a charge to use the site?

No, CheckerTrader is completely free for the public to use. It isn’t a middle man, and we don’t sell leads. No contractor can pay to be at the top of the search results. We put the closest contractors to a customer’s location at the top. You can search for what you need, with no need to set up an account. How do you hold contractors accountable?

All customers can leave an online review for CheckerTrader members they have used. They can score the contractor from one to ten. If a customer is disappointed by work completed, and gives a score of five

less or we want to help. We give the contractor 21 days to rectify the situation. If the work is completed satisfactorily, the customer will have the opportunity to write a new review. If not, the review will be posted live on their account. We have a three strike policy and contractors will be removed from our site if they have three live reviews of five or less out of ten. Where can people find out more?

www.CheckerTrader.co.za is our website - where you can search for a great contractor right now! Plus, we are on FB & IG @CheckerTrader. We’d love to hear from you!

A proud citizen of Kwazulu-Natal, Suhina Singh is one of the Miss Radiant South Africa 2020 finalists. She is a proactive leader with an enthusiastic spirit for adventure and a love for dance. Currently pursuing her third year of studies in education, Suhina's passion lies in teaching the youth of today to prosper.

Having been rejected by modeling agencies and pageants due to her height, she had almost given up until she saw a quote which read "You never fail until you stop trying". Suhina wants to break all stereotypes and show the world that you do not need to be tall, slim or fair to make a difference and leave a lasting footprint, which is what pageantry should be about. 'I entered because it is a great platform to build self confidence. You also learn

things such as communication skills, leadership, interviews and poise. I see it as an opportunity to help others be the best version of themselves.' The Miss Radiant South Africa pageant is based on their motto "A Radiant heart conquers" and the belief that pageantry should be a platform of encouragement and for those with a radiant heart. The person who deserves to win the title is confident, passionate about helping others in need and is not afraid to stand up for something. I believe I am her. ' Should she win the title, Suhina says that she will make a positive difference and leave a legacy of positive change, 'The title would give me an opportunity to prove that Miss Radiant South Africa is a woman of substance, that beauty exceeds the superficial.'

Flip Comparisonitis Into Success! -Lisa Welsh

You want to be one of those “women who uplift women” but you can’t shake that icky jealous feeling every time you see someone who is living in the way you want to live or who has something that you want. Well, today I want to reassure you that comparing yourself to others in this way is a natural and human thing to do. And, it is totally possible to use these experiences to empower yourself, instead of getting sucked into those “I’m not enough” vibes. Here are four steps that you can follow to escape the cycle of comparison that keeps you stuck and small.

Notice what is happening

I’m sure you’ve been there. Scrolling through Instagram, seeing a flood of successful and beautiful women filling your feed. Of course, you’re happy for them… but there is this nagging feeling of self-doubt in the pit of your stomach.

Awareness is power! The first step is simply to notice when you are going into comparison, whether in real life or on social media. It is totally natural to look for ways to grow and expand. That is what makes you human!

Are you really insignificant because you don’t have that thing/success right now? But be aware of when you switch from noticing things you’d like to have, into feeling like other people are better than you because they have them. Once you can see what you’re doing you can make a conscious decision to do something else.

Take a breather

Be Grateful Now that you have reconnected to the truth of where you are right now, it is useful to remember that “enough” is not a quantity. How many likes are enough? How many followers? How much success? How much adoration?

Once you’ve noticed that you’re going down the comparisonitis rabbit hole, take a pause. Take some deep breaths and come back to your body. Use this moment to ask what is actually true for you right now.

If you are stuck on those kinds of measurements, you will never have enough. Enough is a relationship with what you already have. And by shifting into a feeling of gratitude for what you already have, you will transform your energy from lack to abundance.

Are you really insignificant because you don’t have that thing/success right now? When you take a step back and look at where you are right now, can you remember how great you’re actually doing? And how far you’ve come? Can you feel proud of yourself?

Have you heard that phrase: Don’t let your ice-cream melt because you’re counting someone else’s sprinkles? Let it remind you to focus on your strengths, your talents, and your growth. Ask yourself, what do you already have that you love and are excited about? What shows you that you’re on the right path?

Celebrate It feels so good to appreciate where you are and how far you’ve come, while still noticing where you’d love to go next. So aim to move into an energy of celebration, rather than comparisonitis. Now, of course,

this takes practice. It might not happen overnight and sometimes you might still find yourself feeling icky. But have this as the North Star you’re aiming for. Next time you notice something that you desire, but don’t have yet, use the feeling of comparison as a tool for

growth. Write the desire down in your journal or pin it on a Pinterest board. Use them as a roadmap for where you want to go in life. Can you imagine how different that will feel? Comparison will become inspiration and it simply highlights things what you want to explore and experience - and that’s beautiful.

with

From this energy, it will feel so good to celebrate other people’s success, their wins, and their triumphs. And instead of being sucked into comparison, you’ll be uplifted ambition & inspiration

So, during this women’s month, try these four steps to help you to move into a feeling of celebration for the amazing women around you - without forgetting that you are an amazing woman too!

Catherine Strydom KNOW YOUR SKIN

H

i! I am Catherine, an absolute skincare addict. If you ask my loveable husband, he will tell you that I have a cream for anything and everything. I would say that this addiction stems from a longstanding passion for good skin and having the right products to help me achieve the healthiest skin possible. For as long as I can remember, I have had dry and sensitive skin, which required me to moisturize regularly and learn what worked with my skin. Due to this, my love for Skincare started quite early in my life. Today, I am a proud working mommy ofÂ

three wonderful children and still use all my spare time researching new skin products and feeding my passion. As a mom I believe you can still feel good about yourself and not completely lose yourself within the crazy whirlwind of mom hood. My biggest desire with KnowYourSkinJozi is to educate my followers by giving them the tools for a healthy skincare routine. I want to share my journey to healthy skin, and my reviews and tips that have worked for me. I just want you, my reader, to think differently about your skin and your skincare routines.

Megan Hunter FLOWERCROWNS AND TREATMENT

M

y name is Megan and I am a blogger, entrepreneur, and kindness advocate. In 2004 I was diagnosed with a potentially lifethreatening rare disease called Myasthenia Gravis - a neuromuscular, autoimmune disease that causes the messages between my nerves and muscles to get blocked. I battle to speak, swallow, smile, walk, and take care of myself. I felt all alone and was terrified of my future – or lack thereof. All my plans and dreams were suddenly snatched away from me, and I spent my teenage years in and out of hospital. I had many treatments and still wasn’t able to live a full life, but I was determined to live a KIND and positive life. I have so many happy memories; including getting married to the love of my life, finding my dream job with Rare Diseases South Africa, running the Rare Bear Project, starting my own business (Social-Lite Digital) and more. I realised I needed to make my

voice heard in encouraging kindness and awareness. I started my blog ‘Flowercrowns and Treatment' as a means of finding the good in every day, lending my voice to rare diseases and supporting small businesses. In January of last year I needed to have a stem cell transplant – the first in South Africa for MG. The transplant has turned my life around, and I am more determined than ever to be the change that we all need to see. I was also the very proud winner of the 2019 SA Women Givers’ Award for my work with Rare Diseases SA, the Rare Bear Project, and my blog. Every day I make the decision to be positive, be kind, and always look for the good around me. I leave you with a quote that I have adopted as my mantra, “in a world where you can be anything, be kind”.

I think, by now we have all reached that point of frustration, and have started to embrace our new life with COVID-19. For some this is the dream however, for majority of families with children, the struggle has been real, leaving little room to relax and unwind. Of course, there are those celebrities posting tips on managing your life as a parent, but let’s face it… We don’t live in a 12bedroom house with 5 nannies! So how do you find that moment of Zen in your day?! Our point of view at Project ME: a balanced life is very important! However we feel during these unprecedented times the call is for more integration rather than balance! So, here are a few tried and tested tips that can help you.

A

BALANCED

LIFE 64 | Ella - August 2020

Communication

as simple as it sounds, within the household helps build a strong support structure. What we would usually get from colleagues and peers we now get from members of our family. Express any challenges you might have over dinner; it helps to take a load off! This helps the family understand why you might not be available all the time.

Environment

is key, now I am sure, like me you have spent a substantial amount of time ‘spring cleaning your house, at the beginning of lockdown so you are halfway there! Now that you have decluttered, it`s time to create a little designated workspace in your home, whether it is in the garden or on one end of the dinner table, it is your space of work and when you leave that spot at 5pm, you are leaving work and entering your home once again. Being at the ‘office’ still means taking breaks so don’t skip out on those lunch and coffee breaks.

School life

is probably the trickiest in this integration process. The secret to making this work is having a routine. Remember, that we are also creatures of habit. Routines help us feel in-control of situations and helps maintain a sense of self-accomplishment. For those, parents with younger children you also have the added chore of teaching them social norms and time management, things we were all taught in school with our structured time tables. tables. The silver lining is that you don’t have to be the

principle in this situation, you can just sit down as a family and discuss what you think is a realistic timetable.

Be kind to yourself

every day we learn something new; we learn what works for others and what doesn’t work for us. Life is a journey of self-discovery and right now we are learning many new things. New things not only about the virus but also ourselves, our family and adjusting to feel safe again. Consistency and keeping commitments to yourself are key for maintaining your mental health during this time and give yourself a break if life takes a little longer to normalize again. Before you get back into your daily routine: close your eyes and think of 3 things you are grateful for, say them out loud and enjoy your moment of Zen with positivity, strength and selflove!

SELF-TAUGHT TALENT night. I use makeup as an escape from the harsh realities of life that we each face daily. Makeup is like a fantasy world for me, were I can do anything and everything I want. I have always been a lowkey creative individual however I never really knew of ways to use that creativity within me and put it to some good use. Discovering makeup has allowed me to let that artist in me slowly come out. At first it was a bit rocky, but I am glad to say now more than ever I am fully connected and invested in my art.

T o those

in my small beauty community I’ve built, I am known as @octaviamua_ on Instagram, however to close friends and family, I am Just Octavia. A small girl with this makeup talent that all appreciate but don’t necessarily take as serious as I myself do. Makeup for me is more than just a hobby, it’s an intense passion. So, who am I? Well, yes indeed I am Octavia Gashirai Maramwidze. I am a self-taught makeup artist or enthusiast, whichever way you’d like to phrase it. I have been working with makeup for about 3 to 4 years now. EVERYTHING I know is self-taught, through numerous hours of watching YouTube videos, day and

I am by no means saying I know it all. As a self-taught individual within this beauty space, I am a sponge. I am continuously and consistently, taking in all the necessary knowledge I need to, from both big and small beauty personalities. Every day is a learning curve, with the way the beauty space is always evolving, I am not doing this for the sake of, no, I am doing this for the future, my future. I am doing this in hopes of impacting, positively, in the life of the next individual who comes across my work. I hope one day I can be able to sit or stand, In front of many who are like me and just be able to speak on my journey and just inspire masses, positively and BEAUTIFULLY.

'I have earned tremendous respect amongst my peers and some of the people whom I look up to, but this is only just the beginning. I honestly feel like I haven't done anything. Ask me about this feeling again in 5 years.'

A NEW START Everything changed when Eli, my little boy came along. At the time I fell pregnant I felt like “why is his happening to me” but I realised very soon that it was the exact thing I needed at the right time. I left treatment at 7 months pregnant, very overwhelmed and scared but adamant that this time, things would be different.

Hi, my name is Kerryn and I am an addict. I have been 5 years sober. I know this is an unusual way to start an article about a business but this journey of recovery is the exact thing that led me to Soapify, my handcrafted soap company. I went into treatment nearly 6 years ago for chronic alcoholism and addiction because I realised that I was slowly destroying myself as well as the people who loved me. I didn’t want to have to rely on a substance just to function. I wanted freedom from a life ruled by a substance and obsession. Every time I had left treatment, I would relapse a week later and was straight back into treatment. This became a pattern I didn’t know how to change.

I was lucky to start working at the treatment centre I got clean at, teaching art and music therapy to other addicts. I loved the work but it wasn’t enough financially and so I decided I was going to make soap. I started out in my mom’s kitchen with a few plastic chocolate mold and a handful of ingredients. Before I knew it my soap making had turned into a proper side hustle and and as a a result, Soapify emerged. There was a lot of trial and error, tears, success, failure and hard work that went into building Soapify but it was so worth it. Soapify started to blossom in 2019. Soapify is not just your average soap company. Some of the things we offer include beauty products, body products, bath products and a lip care range. We have a kids range, we do weddings favours, corporate gifting, party, bridal shower, baby

shower and special occasion favours. We have monthly themed surprise boxes which are beautifully themed boxes delivered to your door or to the door of someone special. We are also launching a spin off from Soapify called 'Soapify with Nature' Which is a 100% natural vegan range with environmentally friendly packaging.  With products related to Coronavirus, we are not doing any alcohol based products but we have launched an Antiviral 20 range.
