MASTER PLAN Ouachita Children’s Center Hot Springs, AR - 4/6/16

FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES The Children’s Center contains approximately 11,626 square feet and currently functions as an emergency shelter center for children ages six to seventeen that provides on site services such as: case management, educational classes, support groups, and mentoring. In the future, the Children’s Center would like to expand the accomodations they offer for the children as well as staff. This will require utilization of the current structure to its utmost potential, future additions, and a redesigned site plan. We propose that the site plan be modified as seen on the next page. Currently the entrance appears to be at the back of the boy’s hall. This is due to the current parking situation and lack of signage directing people to the front door. To fix this, we propose to create a single lane circle drive at the front of the building which leads to a larger extension of the existing lower parking lot. In addition, an extension of the exisiting sidewalk would be added from the parking lot. An ADA ramp added to the front entrance creates equal accessibility. This would create a clear traffic pattern to the front door entrance. The future additions could include both of the following solutions. Solution one: Four 1,400 sq/ft Craftsman cottages could be added to the north west end of the property. This would essentially be a mirror image of the homes across the street to create an extension of the already existing neighborhood. In the future, if the Center decided to not continue with the cottage solution, the cottages could be sold off as individual homes. Solution two: two 2-story wing additions would be added to the exisitng building. The lower story would be partially underground, creating a safe place in case of emergency situations as well as multi-use space. The upper story would be new rooms and restrooms for the children. This would allow the center to bring the occupancy up to meet their currently licensed amount and have complete separation of the sexes. In order to utilize the existing building Solution 2 would have to be constructed first. Once the children are moved into the new wings, the rooms on the lower level, that are currently being used as bedrooms, could be turned into much needed offices, classrooms, or therapy spaces.
