It’s fitting that this issue’s kitchen feature focuses on the enduring appeal of the black and white kitchen, interpreted in very different ways by three inspired design teams. As usual, we’re featuring great homes, this month from Whistler and Toronto, and a focus on dressing tables. Is there anyone who doesn’t appreciate the chance to sit and fuss in total comfort? And there’s the launch of our new City Column by Peter Saltsman, where great design, shopping, eating and the latest exhibitions are on the top of the list. Our interviews with London designer Beata Heuman and Vancouver potter Janaki Larsen offer insights into two exceptionally creative women. As we all spend these last few weeks waiting for spring and the reopening of our world, Michel and I are in packing mode for our move to a partially finished condo that’s suffering from all the usual Covid-related delays. “Who needs closets when you can curl up for a good read” is my current motto. In Memoriam CHRISTINE RALPHS, 1948–2021 Stylist, designer and partner to Michelle Lloyd at the firm Lloyd Ralphs Design, Christine worked alongside her best friend, Michelle, for 20 years. Christine is remembered for her love of the visual arts, her gifted eye, her extraordinary visual sense and her creation of serene, fashionforward interiors. Predeceased by her husband, Peter Ralphs, Christine bravely fought her battle with lung cancer. She spent her time in Toronto, at her charming cottage on Snake Island in Lake Simcoe, and in Bal Harbour, Fla., most often in the company of her friends Michelle and David Bermann. Her last gift to the City of Toronto was founding The Friends of University Avenue, an initiative with the goal of illuminating the avenue for cancer patients at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (visit reimagininguniversity avenue.org for more information). Christine will be remembered for her beautifully curated rooms and missed for her warm and generous spirit.

THIS PAST OCTOBER, our design world lost one of its brightest stars, Christine Ralphs, who, for decades, alongside partner Michelle Lloyd, created some of the freshest, fashion-forward rooms featured on our pages. You’ll remember the glossy white interiors layered with her trademark mix of mirrors, glass, ornate detailing and bold black accents. I spoke with her best friend and partner, Michelle Lloyd, who said: “Our journey through friendship and work was our creative inspiration. Christine was a modern tastemaker of style in everything she touched.” Her rooms always thrilled me. Like her Toronto townhouse that sparkled with huge mirrors and walls of art hung gallery-style. And one particular kitchen that I called her “Chanel kitchen” because it carried the black and white theme using simple Ikea cabinets that Christine customized. On one wall, she hung swing-arm wall lamps that you might find in a bedroom over a desk fashioned from black cabinets topped with Carrara marble — a place to work by day, then set up her bar in LET’S CONNECT time for cocktails. @lyndareevesdesign For Christine, every surface or wall @houseandhome

I’d love to see what great options are out there. Natural gas will be phased out in many cities over the next few decades and home renovations need to reflect the changes needed for the future. PURE SHOPPE “It’s really important to me to celebrate artisans and help shine a light on them,” says Ami McKay of her new retail concept. Last fall, she carved out floor space within her Vancouver design studio to offer a selection of home accessories and artwork that she’s been using in her projects for years. Among them: textile art by local talent Julie Pongrac, whom Ami discovered in the city’s Eastside Culture Crawl years ago, traditional Japanese-style ceramics by Mimoko, and charming pom-pom throw pillows sourced from Mexico (and featured in many H&H stories since). Each pillow takes 10 weeks to make and provides a livelihood for two families — one harvests the wool; the other, the cotton. The rest of the inventory is similarly story-driven, says Ami, sourced with the goal of highlighting a craft and supporting a community. Her eye for tactile, approachable pieces is, of course, part of her own story. “The warmth of my interiors always comes from the natural elements. These are pieces that turn a house into a home.” 1. Travertine Turnabout THE CREAMY LIMESTONE TAKES CENTRE STAGE IN A NEW DESIGNER COLLECTION.

“I wanted to create a collection that celebrated stone as a material,” says Andrew Metrick of his new Modern Stone Collection for Elte. “Not adding wood, lacquer or metal, but giving myself the task of letting the stone speak for itself.” Among the four stones he selected from quarries in Iran, Italy and Turkey is travertine, which is suddenly being reconsidered for its calm, even appearance and past prominence in 1970s styles. “Travertine has a soft, fibrous appeal,” he says. “These pieces are substantial enough to add an architectural element in a space, but they’re also understated, making them great supporting characters.” 20 H&H MARCH 2022

Take a note from designer Courtney McLeod and bring style to a plain table lamp by customizing the shade. For her living room in New York’s Harlem neighbourhood, she paired a white pillar lamp with a shade in Schumacher’s swirling Giove fabric. Layered against the deep blue walls and tangerine sofa, it holds its own in the vibrant setting. “One hundred per cent, it’s back,” says Kent Worth of Kravet Canada about this revived decorative accent. The Toronto showroom offers a custom lampshade service to the trade with a full range of shapes, pleat options and fabrics. Traditional block prints and bold ikats are most popular and their lightweight cotton allows light to permeate well. “Use a patterned shade in the same way you would use a toss cushion,” he says. “It’s a pop.”

We might pick up on a detail we hadn’t considered otherwise. Many of the chandeliers in your collection are uplights. What’s your advice for using them in the home? Uplighting is something you want in spaces where you entertain — a dining room or library — or in a bedroom, where you want even, beautiful light. It’s generally not for a principal bathroom or places that need task lighting. Use it to create a soft glow and a welcoming mood.

You started your blog, La Dolce Vita, in 2007. Why do you think it resonated? My style is rooted in a classic, timeless point of view, but it has modern touches. Whether you lean more contemporary or more traditional, there’s something you might identify with in my work. How did you focus the look of this lighting collection? It’s something that came together organically. During my travels, pre-Covid, I would go to France twice a year, shopping for vintage and antique pieces for clients and for my store in Houston. The entire Orsay series is inspired by Giacometti fixtures I’d seen in Loulou, a restaurant in Paris. Those fixtures are chunkier, more organic and done in plaster, but I love those conical shades and wanted to reinterpret that. The collection leans a bit ’70s, with a French modern feel. Is travel a big inspiration? I have a visceral need to travel and shake up my surroundings! I was just in Palm Beach and the light, colour palette and architecture are so different there. All of those things creep into our psyches when we travel.

DECORATING IDEA YOU’RE EXCITED TO TRY: I’d like to create a wall from something other than drywall. Not a folding screen, but some kind of room partition. I’d like to explore the materials that could be incorporated and build a room out from there. INTO: Cohesive yet lived-in rooms that honestly reflect how their inhabitants live. OVER: Fast design. I’m just so over that whole look. Authenticity is my thing. RECENT INSPIRATION: The 35th floor of the TD South Tower in Toronto. It didn’t occur to me in the elevator on the way up, but being so high up at night, surrounded by almost complete darkness, I felt charged. HOW OFTEN YOU CHANGE UP YOUR OWN HOME: I’m always rearranging, moving things around and bringing in custom pieces to see how they really work. I need to see it set up. ITEM IN YOUR HOME THAT MOST REFLECTS YOU: My Apple boxes. I like the practicality and simplicity of them. They can be moved around easily to become something different — I like being able to see things in a different light. KEY INFLUENCE ON DESIGN: Communities of makers. During Covid, when I’ve been sitting more than travelling, I’ve become more aware of the creative influences found in relationships. A ROOM YOU WOULD LOVE TO DESIGN: A new hotel lobby. he heavens were definitely smiling on 21-yearold student Beata Heuman in 2004 when — disillusioned by the interior design course she was studying in London — she landed a job interview with one of the lions of British design, Nicky Haslam. Beata admitted she didn’t even know who he was, but Nicky, always a rebel, wasn’t snubbed and took a chance on the Swedish expat. Over the next nine years, mentored by both Nicky and his number two, Canadian designer Colette van den Thillart, Beata developed her own theatrical style (think bold colours, layered patterns and timeless furniture). In a move she called a natural progression, she launched her eponymous firm in 2013, taking on projects such as Chelsea restaurant Farm Girl, London townhouses, a Nantucket clapboard house and a new-build in Hamburg. The firm was included on Architectural Digest’s prestigious Top 100 in 2020 and 2021.

To further her commitment to craftsmanship, Beata had been selling artisanal items on a small scale since 2015, and unveiled her e-commerce site, shoppa.beataheuman.com, in 2019. Offerings include sumptuous velvet pillows, marbled wallpaper, lighting, and brass coasters and hand-forged hardware produced by small, independent Swedish, British or Italian makers. 2021 marked another major milestone in Beata’s career: the launch of her first book, Every Room Should Sing. The book showcases 10 of her projects, including her own 1870 townhouse in London’s Hammersmith neighbourhood, where Beata folds in bespoke items like a brass-trellised, confectionary-inspired glass ceiling in the kitchen — an ornate backdrop for her Dodo Egg pendant. We asked Beata about her journey from a fresh-faced junior designer’s assistant to running her own 11-person firm, and how she brings a fantastical element to eclectic British decorating. Q&A HOUSE & HOME: What did you take away from your experience with Nicky and Colette? BEATA HEUMAN: I like taking risks and doing the unexpected. I’ve always been drawn to that way of creating, and Nicky does that in spades. He’s irreverent; he likes doing the thing you expect him not to do, and he’s not precious about what materials you can use. Nicky knows about convention but doesn’t take much note of it. You always hope clients will think a project looks amazing, but I admit there’s a real thrill that comes from wondering whether it will be understood and well received. H&H: How do you use those lessons when designing? BH: They taught me how to execute difficult tasks but also how to have fun. I was having martinis with Nicky and Colette at the Carlyle Hotel in New York when I fell in love with the Ludwig Bemelmans mural in the bar. When I was pregnant with my daughter Gurli, I used it as inspiration to create a magical room for her with a mural that included nice local details like the top of Hammersmith Bridge. I love that contrast of the childish motif and the rabbits who are drinking, smoking and being a bit naughty. H&H: How would you describe your style in one sentence? BH: Imaginative, considered and fresh. H&H MARCH 2022 41

H&H: Do you have any signature moves? BH: I like paw feet and giving pieces of furniture almost a personality. We often make bespoke furniture; you get a lot of straight lines in average shops, so I like introducing undulating lines and curves. All of our projects are filled with bespoke pieces or one-offs. I don’t like repeating myself — I try to evolve. H&H: Where do you source items? BH: I love going to antique markets and feel inspired by sites like 1stDibs, which has great photos. If we aren’t going the bespoke route, we gravitate toward vintage to get something completely unique and reasonably priced. Ideally, your home should look like it’s been decorated over a generation or two. H&H: How did your book come about? BH: Rizzoli called me up with the idea a couple of years ago. I wanted to create a design book to help people let their own personality take centre stage. It’s easy to lose confidence and be overly concerned with “doing the right thing.” I encourage people to connect with a design that really means something to them.

have so many ideas all the time that I don’t sleep much,” says ceramic designer Janaki Larsen, happily reflecting on long days in front of the wheel and at the kiln. The acclaimed artist produces up to 100 ceramic vessels per day, notably creating dishes for Noma in Copenhagen when it was voted the world’s best restaurant (Janaki got the commission via a stylist friend when they worked on a cookbook together), so it makes sense she’s not wasting precious time lying down. Many creatives would burn out with so many hours spent working, but that’s precisely what gives Janaki balance — and especially so now that she has an expansive new studio, where those myriad ideas have room to fly. Janaki’s previous studios had always been pintsize, with constant to-ing and fro-ing while raising her now 12-year-old daughter, Lola, co-owning Vancouver’s Le Marché St. George café and designing the winery for its sister outpost, La Fabrique St. George. But the pandemic brought about profound change. “I used to have a production schedule and timelines for my commissions, which gave me a sense of security,” she says. So when a large order was cancelled on March 18, 2020, it alarmed her. Shutting herself in her studio, Janaki surveyed the now orphaned ceramics, dusted off her abandoned website and posted them all online. “Everyone was trapped at home and, because my work hadn’t been available to the public for a long time, it sold out

immediately,” she says. The enthusiastic response inspired her to start focusing solely on ceramics. Janaki always knew she’d be an artist because her parents — painter and potter Patricia Larsen and painter and stonemason Ron Crawford — had long paved the way, but she never thought that ceramics would provide a viable living. “I’d only seen ceramics at craft fairs or admired people with small studios on Salt Spring Island; I couldn’t wrap my head around scaling up,” she says. But within the first three months of the pandemic, another opportunity came along: a fan who’d been following her, urged her to move to a larger retail space he owned next to Livingspace Interiors in the city’s Armory District. That 3,700-square-foot space had been sitting empty for a year, so Janaki jumped at the chance. “There had always been more that I wanted to do in my former 1,000-square-foot-studio, but I’d always lacked the space,” she says. To put her imprint on the sleek new industrial envelope, she set about installing a kitchen with a six-burner range. “Food is such an important part of my work,” she says. “My dishes are for food, my 46 H&H MARCH 2022

commissions are often for cookbooks and chefs often bring food to the studio.” Now, her new workspace accommodates a showroom, studio, glaze laboratory, kitchen and welding room. “I love that everything is done in-house,” she adds. “I can cook lunch and then see how the welding is coming along in the next room.” That fluidity is what keeps Janaki creative. “I’m always trying to achieve a seamlessness,” she says. “Some people have their day job and then they have their other life, but I don’t ever feel like that — it’s all just one mash-up. If I didn’t have a daughter, I would probably live in the closet here!” Nothing in the studio ever stays in the same place for more than a day; her new furniture was built with change in mind. “I’m constantly working on a new idea — one day, the tables I designed on wheels are set up as a long-table dinner for 42 and the next, they’re being used for mixing glazes.” Although she still produces work for Noma (“You don’t say no to Noma!”), Janaki has largely stopped doing commissions. “If it doesn’t make you feel good, don’t do it,” is a mantra that’s scrawled beside her pottery wheel, and it helps her say no more often so she can focus on doing the work she loves. “When you’re holding something handmade by someone else, there’s energy and passion in that object — it’s an extension of that person,” she says. “As we get more disconnected, these pieces bring us back together; returning to my roots has made me feel connected again to people all over the world.” 48 H&H MARCH 2022

What is it about the black and white It probably all began with the elements: kitchen that we love so much? Over the white marble for counters, black for years, we’ve flirted with other colours — French cast-iron stoves and English “hobs,” think bubblegum pink and turquoise black and white for linoleum tile floors, in the 1950s and sunset and gallons of white paint hues in the ’70s — and, for cabinets. THE ENDURING APPEAL OF THE BLACK AND WHITE KITCHEN.

THE INSPIRATION FOR the black and white palette in this midtown Toronto kitchen was the dramatically veined Arabescato Corchia marble, handpicked by designers Jordy Fagan and Alana Firestone of Collective Studio and their client. They didn’t want to chop up the space with different colours on the uppers and lowers, so they showed off the marble on the range wall. Here, the millwork and hood are stained a deep, rich charcoal, which is in contrast to the creamy, hand-applied Venetian plaster on the walls. Their client loves to cook and asked for a walk-in pantry, but the designers came up with a clever alternative. “We suggested a curved stand-alone pantry with retractable doors and custom half-moon handles,” says Jordy. Another key design feature is the ribbed glass cabinet; the graphic black frames and white oak shelves bring tuxedo-like elegance. There’s a baking cupboard beside the ovens, a hidden step stool, drawers for bread and avocados, and pullouts on either side of the cooktop for oils and spices. “A lot of thought went into this kitchen design,” says the happy client. Sounds like a recipe for success.

WHEN CERAMICIST Sara Wood, her husband, Daniel, and 13-yearold daughter, Adelaide, moved to their circa-1830 stone house on Ontario’s Niagara Escarpment, Sarah decided the house would dictate its own design journey. It was “surprisingly bossy,” she says. “You can’t go modern and sparse in a house like this. We felt like stewards of a little piece of Upper Canadian history.” A self-described Europhile and avid traveller, Sara wanted to recreate the kind of kitchens she’d seen in France, Spain and Italy by companies such as Plain English and deVOL Kitchens. “I wanted a kitchen that felt built up over time,” she says. “In a historical house like this, you wouldn’t match everything perfectly.” To drive home an authentic heritage look, she chose hardworking elements including a farmhouse sink and raw brass faucet. Cabinets in a sooty black look like they’re tinged by woodsmoke. Mellow woods, seen in the hutch and black walnut floors (milled from an old tree that fell in the backyard), soften the black and white palette. Instead of the current mania for a monolithic island, Sara opted for a furniture-like prep table that everyone could gather around. Her one concession to modern style? The Bertazzoni range. “It’s the most beautiful stove I’ve ever seen; it’s my Ferrari,” she says. “I call it my sexy little Italian cooking machine.” H&H MARCH 2022 57

A BERTAZZONI RANGE the colour of the night sky was the starting point for this black and white kitchen. Shannon Hunter had been coveting the stove for almost as long as she’d been a fan of Bloomsbury Fine Cabinetry. After first spying Bloomsbury at Toronto’s Interior Design Show 10 years ago, she was determined to have the company build the kitchen of her dreams. When Shannon and her husband, Noah, moved from Toronto to run Wander the Resort in Bloomfield, Ont., her dream was finally realized. While revamping the resort, they renovated their historical 1897 Queen Anne house, and designer Kassandra Arbour of Bloomsbury stepped in. This English-style kitchen has hints of Scandi and Moroccan flavour with arches, patterned tile, a graphic palette and plenty of warm oak, including the ceiling beams. “Farrow & Ball’s Off-Black is one of my favourite colours to ground a space,” says Kassandra. “It’s softer than a true black, and it’s a beautiful contrast to the paler tall cabinets and floating shelves.” The space is grounded by a large black island topped with soapstone. “I wanted lots of windows and light, with no upper cabinets,” says Shannon. In another power move, the pantry was painted black and framed by a white arched doorway. “The pantry colour makes the archway pop,” says Kassandra. “It’s such a fun look to see that beautiful ladder and the tiled floor.” SEE SOURCE GUIDE

“It’s amazing how a beautiful, organized house can make you feel happy,” says Olivia (pictured), the founder of Primavera Kitchen.

Olivia Ribas always fantasized about having a dream kitchen. It would be a beautiful, light-filled and functional space where she could methodically spread out her ingredients, tools and equipment. “I’m extremely organized,” says the popular Toronto recipe developer, food blogger and photographer behind Primavera Kitchen, a website that gets one million hits per month. In reality, however, she cooked in her small condo kitchen, where she lived with her husband, Pierre DiGirolamo, and their toddler, Thomas. It was a major challenge. For instance, the 15 ingredients that went 72 H&H MARCH 2022

into Moqueca, a silky fish stew from Brazil, where Olivia is from, turned her counters into a mountain of clutter. “I was always searching for spices,” says Olivia. “I bought paprika every week because I could never find it.” Double- and triple-testing multiple recipes was a pain in the compact space, and the kitchen lacked light — not ideal for food photography. So, in 2018, the couple decided to off-load the condo and relocate to The Beach in Toronto. “I grew up in Salvador, surrounded by the ocean, so water is very important to me,” says Olivia. “When I moved to Canada 12 years ago and saw Lake Ontario, I said, ‘This looks like an ocean; I’m happy.’ ” Olivia and Pierre found a tree-lined, lakeside street in the neighbourhood that was appealing and started the process of building from the ground up. The house, clad in white Hardie siding, took a year to complete. At 1,750 square feet (including the basement), with three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a powder room, it’s an elegant, subdued and comfortable home for family living. Olivia enlisted Orsi Panos, the principal of Orsi Panos Interiors, for the design. “I had watched some of Orsi’s videos on the House & Home website and connected with her uncluttered, streamlined style,” she says. “I wanted something transitional and modern, but not too modern.” SEE SOURCE GUIDE

The living room has layers of texture and a high-low mix of furniture. “We splurged on the custom velvet sofa and pillows and saved on the coffee table,” says Orsi. Sofa, Statum Designs; rug by Loloi, Rug & Weave.

Orsi took care of everything from the layout to the finishes, and Pierre helped with project management. “We didn’t want the home to feel like a quintessential beach house,” says the designer, who nixed any seashells and navy blue and white. “We wanted a refined, casual vibe, so we went with classic, elegant fixtures and finishes, and peppered in natural materials such as rattan and linen.” The result is an interior that’s interesting and layered, with an effortless feel. For the colour palette, Orsi looked to her nature-fixated client. “Olivia loves green, so the shade appears throughout the home in the art, accessories and upholstery,” she says. Other natural elements such as wood and marble are also featured, and often designed to work for Olivia’s business. “The marble counters and backsplash in the kitchen have a matte finish,” says Olivia. “I didn’t want anything that shines when I shoot a video. It’s also better for food photography because it minimizes reflections.” White oak floors run through the understated yet gorgeous home. Off the foyer, the art-filled living room flows into a central dining area. At the back of the house, a wall of glazing fills the kitchen with natural light. The large island is custom designed for the busy blogger, who spends up to six hours per day in the kitchen huddled over notes while wielding a spatula. On the opposite wall, a full-height pantry hides an astounding number of items behind bifold doors, and deep lower drawers house pots and clunky appliances. For a food blogger, having the latest gear is essential. “I have to keep up with trends,” says Olivia. “I need my Instant Pot, air fryer, Vitamix — whatever the latest gadget is.” She’s thrilled that her equipment is now tidily stored away, and her spices are at the ready in a drawer by the cooktop. She can finally optimize productivity and focus on what’s important — cooking, of course! 74 H&H MARCH 2022

SOME WOMEN BUY SHOES; Kirsten Torokvei buys houses. As a former small business owner, Kirsten had amassed an impressive number of commercial and residential properties but, for her dream home, she looked at hundreds of houses before landing on the one — a classic two-storey red brick house built in 2007 on a tree-lined street in Lawrence Park, one of Toronto’s most coveted neighbourhoods. Despite looking faded, the 6,000-square-foot formal home was blessed with good bones and obvious assets (five bedrooms, 10-foot-high ceilings and seven bathrooms). The house was ripe for reincarnation and Kirsten knew it wouldn’t feel like home to her husband — a former pro soccer player — and her children, Logan, 11, and Carter, 8, until they shaped it to suit their young family’s lifestyle. Kirsten envisioned a more modern, less formal home, one that was clean-lined and casually comfortable. “We wanted a design that would give us all space and privacy when we crave it, and big, comfy gathering areas when we want to be

together,” she says. “I wanted a home that feels lived in, where every inch of space is purposeful. I didn’t want that fancy room that nobody goes into.” For help, she turned to Toronto designer Katelyn Hermant and the team at Peaks & Rafters. Kirsten and Katelyn had worked together on the family’s waterfront cottage in Collingwood, Ont., and had developed a fearless and trusting relationship. “The place had great bones, and we wanted to improve the space for the family’s needs, so we gutted it down to the studs,” says Katelyn of the nearly one-year renovation, which wrapped up in the summer of 2019. The task was to bring a youthful, contemporary spirit to a house with a traditional vibe. Out went the dark and dreary wainscotting and wood panelling, and a partition TOP: In contrast to the curvaceous table and chairs, the dining room has a blue ceiling that adds an evening sky–like intimacy. between the kitchen and family room was jettisoned to create a more informal, communal space. On the second floor, Katelyn revised the layout to reflect the way the family wanted to live, creating a more spacious principal suite with a romantic, double-sided fireplace, and transforming one of the original bedrooms into an “office” for the kids — an idea that proved to be invaluable during the dark days of Covid. Out, too, went the basement nanny suite, now home to a TV room, guest bedroom, bar, gym, wine cellar and hockey room with an artificial ice surface the kids can actually skate on. Each space feels whimsical and unique while having a common thread, Kirsten’s favourite blue, which runs throughout the home and punctuates the soft, neutral palette like an unexpected exclamation point. “We didn’t have to convince Kirsten to go for colour,” says Katelyn. 84 H&H MARCH 2022

“She was all for it. The neutral and more minimalist pieces — the furniture, white walls and mouldings — are classic and timeless, but the colour turns the design on its head.” A cobalt blue ceiling in the dining room (originally an unplanned-for detail) now adds cosiness to the space. “We don’t entertain the way our parents did, so we added comfy lounge chairs to encourage everyone to relax and linger at the table long after the dinner plates are cleared and the candles are melted down to the wick,” says Kirsten. In the laid-back living room, a peony pink silk rug infuses the space with a jolt of pure, energizing joy. “We used colour to create an emotional response,” says Kirsten, sitting at the desk in her grey grasscloth-swathed office, Gus, the family’s puppy, fast asleep at her feet. Sure, she still scans real-estate listings, but the family has no plans to move. “This is pretty perfect for us; it feels like home.” SEE SOURCE GUIDE

HEY SAY THAT IF YOU WANT to own a house in Whistler, B.C., you have to go Full Cabin: wood beams, nostalgic memorabilia and all. But Melissa Meehan, a Whistler regular, was looking for something lighter and fresher. When she and her husband, Paul, who are both entrepreneurs in Vancouver, began hunting for a four-season weekend home for themselves and their three ski-mad children, Melissa knew exactly what she didn’t want: “No knotty pine. No tartan. No skis on the wall.” The search ended in their dream neighbourhood, on a street they’d driven down countless times yet convinced themselves was out of their range — until, finally, it wasn’t. The contemporary house avoided all of Melissa’s deal breakers and then some. Built for a developer by architect Brent Murdoch and decorated by Vancouver designer Denise Ashmore, it sits at the edge of a golf course on a quiet cul-de-sac, with views of Whistler, Blackcomb and Rainbow mountains. The couple walked in, fell in love and demanded to know: “Who did this?” Melissa immediately hired Denise and her company Project22design to finish off the interiors.

With three children and a constant rotation of friends in the house, there has to be a place for everyone. The Bensen dining table seats 10. Custom ceiling fixture by Lock & Mortice, Matthew McCormick Studio.

Built in a simple box shape, the house draws on local materials that speak to the mountain setting, yet feel light rather than stodgy. The second-storey open plan is anchored by a concrete-faced Rumford fireplace and a kitchen island of grey Fior Di Bosco marble. Continuous oak floors add warmth without resorting to a honey-yellow stain, and vertical motifs in the slats, railings and panelling, plus grounding pops of black in the fireplace and light fixtures, bring a modern edge to the space. The high-spec finishes are luxuriously tactile but not ostentatious. Due to sourcing and shipping issues around the pandemic, Denise furnished the home almost entirely through local businesses. Over several months, designer and client formed the sort of relationship where they’d practically finish each other’s sentences. “Her taste is impeccable,” says Melissa of Denise. “Her finishes are so textural — modern but comfortable.” Denise returns the compliment: “It was clear from the get-go that Melissa H&H MARCH 2022 89

and I were on same page. She had a few things purchased that I would have picked anyway, like stools for the island and chairs for the dining table.” With five bedrooms across 4,200 square feet, plus a guest suite in the basement, the house was a splurge. But it proved invaluable over a year of lockdowns and remote learning, when the children — now 12, 11 and eight — could study in private, walk into the village, zip around on nearby bike paths and reconvene for dinner on the 500-square-foot deck. “Anything you can enjoy together as a family is a great investment,” says Melissa. Last winter, she injured her knee on the final ski day of the season and is now eager to get back on the mountain. “Every time I come through that door, it’s so zen to me. There’s nothing that needs to be done; we can just switch off. Every time we reach the driveway, we say, ‘We love this house.’ Every single time.” 90 H&H MARCH 2022

Devin’s first cookbook in 2009, Two Dishes, was co-authored with her mom, Ace Bakery co-founder Linda Haynes. Since then, Devin has had two kids, opened (and shuttered) her gourmet takeout business, Delica Kitchen, and developed a successful food website, Crumb. MAKES 14 TO 16 JAMMIES

1 8 oz. brick cream cheese, room temperature ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature, plus more for greasing 1 cup sugar 2 large eggs ½ tsp almond extract 1¾ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 1 tsp baking powder ½ tsp baking soda ½ tsp kosher salt ¼ cup whole or 2% milk About ½ cup strawberry jam Powdered sugar, for dusting MAKE BATTER 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease 12 muffin-top moulds with butter and dust with flour. 2. In bowl with handheld mixer, or in bowl of stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment, beat together cream cheese, butter and sugar, until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down bowl, add eggs and almond extract and continue beating for another 2 minutes, or until pale yellow. 3. In separate bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add half of flour mixture to cream cheese mixture and beat, until just combined. Scrape down bowl and pour in milk, followed by remaining flour mixture, and mix until combined. Refrigerate dough for 30 minutes. 4. Use ice-cream scoop, if you have one, to divide batter evenly between muffintop moulds. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of strawberry jam on top of each jammy. Use tip of paring knife or toothpick to swirl jam through batter. Jam spreads when baking, so don’t worry about getting this perfect. Refrigerate batter in between baking and repeat process with any leftover batter. BAKE JAMMIES 1. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes, until cake tester inserted into centre of jammy comes out clean. 102 H&H MARCH 2022

2. Cool for 15 minutes in muffin tin before placing on wire rack to cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar and serve. Note: If you don’t have a muffin-top tin, you can bake these in a regular muffin tin— you just might have to add a few more minutes to the baking time.

Salt and Pepper Flank Steak with Quick Tomato Shallot Kimchi SERVES 4 TO 6

2 lbs. flank steak 2 tbsp canola or safflower oil, plus extra 2½ tsp kosher salt, divided ½ tsp black pepper 1½ cups grape tomatoes 2 tbsp distilled white vinegar ½ tsp grated garlic 2 tsp fish sauce 1 tsp honey 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil 1 tbsp Sriracha 1 medium shallot, peeled and sliced as thinly as possible 1 cup loosely packed cilantro leaves and tender stems 1 tbsp white sesame seeds PREPARE STEAK 1. Remove steak from refrigerator 30 minutes before cooking. Rub with 2 tablespoons of oil, 2 teaspoons of salt and pepper, and set aside. PREPARE TOMATOES 1. Cut tomatoes in half and place into bowl. Sprinkle remaining ½ teaspoon of salt over tomatoes and toss. Let tomatoes sit for 10 to 15 minutes to allow juices to drain. 2. Remove tomatoes from liquid and pat dry with paper towels. Discard remaining liquid. 3. In another small bowl, whisk together vinegar, garlic, fish sauce, honey, sesame oil and Sriracha. Add tomatoes and shallots to bowl and toss to coat well. Let tomatoes marinate while you cook steak.

SEAR STEAK AND SERVE 1. Heat large skillet or grill pan over high heat for 2 to 3 minutes, until very hot. Using paper towels, blot any excess moisture off steak. Rub more oil on both sides of steak. Sear for 5½ minutes per side for medium-rare, shifting steak in pan every 2 minutes. Set aside on cutting board and let rest for minimum of 10 minutes. 2. Slice steak against grain into ½" slices and lay out on platter. 3. Toss cilantro and sesame seeds with tomatoes at the last second. Serve on the side or generously spoon over steak.

My Favourite Drumsticks with Peanuts and Lime SERVES 4

chicken drumsticks cup soy sauce cup maple syrup tbsp grated garlic tbsp grated ginger tbsp corn, safflower or grapeseed oil, plus more for chicken ¼ cup salted peanuts, roughly chopped 4–5 green onions, trimmed and sliced in ¼" rounds Lime wedges, for serving MAKE DRUMSTICKS 1. Place chicken drumsticks in large freezer bag. Add soy sauce, maple syrup, garlic, ginger and oil. Seal and shake well to coat. Ideally, you can do this the night before, or a minimum of 1 hour before. 2. Preheat oven to 425°F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. 3. Remove chicken from bag, shaking off any extra marinade, and place on baking sheet. Pat chicken dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture (the enemy of crispy skin). Drizzle with a little bit of oil and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until skin is crispy and dark brown. 4. Place chicken on large platter, and scatter with chopped peanuts and green onions. Serve with lime wedges on the side.

Vinaigrette 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 2 tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar ½ tsp finely grated garlic 1 tbsp honey 1 tsp kosher salt, plus more to taste Black pepper, to taste ⅓ cup olive oil PREPARE SALAD 1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line baking sheet with parchment paper. Place walnuts on baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes, until slightly golden and fragrant. Cool slightly and roughly chop. 2. Slice celery stalks diagonally, about ¼" thick. Quarter each apple, remove core and slice into half-moon shapes as thinly as possible. Place sliced celery, celery leaves and apples in large serving bowl along with toasted walnuts and kale. Add half of cheddar. MAKE VINAIGRETTE AND SERVE 1. In small bowl, whisk together Dijon, lemon juice, vinegar, garlic, honey, salt and pepper. Slowly drizzle in olive oil, continually whisking, until combined. 2. Pour vinaigrette over salad and toss. To serve, top with remaining cheddar cheese and a little more salt and pepper. Note: Shave your cheese with a cheese planer or very carefully with a sharp knife. You want large shards, not small gratings.

Our front door opens right into the living room, leaving very little storage or space for a proper entryway. We’re putting in white oak flooring, and we want to get rid of the chunky white storage unit. We’d like to do something more streamlined and still have a place to store our coats and bags. What do you suggest? — M.H., Ottawa

Based on the photo of your entryway, it looks like you’re a family of doers! Let’s start by hiding all the bags and coats that live in your hall. Since the area behind your living room chairs is quite narrow, you’ll need a shallow storage system like Ikea’s Ivar cabinet, shown above. You can mount hooks on the inside of the doors and the back wall of the cabinet. It also comes with optional adjustable shelves, which you can use to store shoes and baskets. To maximize space, stack two units, one on top of the other, to create the look of one tall cabinet. They can be anchored to the wall or mounted on feet (providing breathing room below for basket storage). If you have room, you can stack two more units to create a second tall cabinet. The cabinets are made of solid pine and come unfinished. To customize, paint them off-black and add leather cabinet pulls. Then, for taller coats, hang a blond wood peg rail on the wall above a small bench and store boots underneath.

Consider freshening up your walls by painting them a bright white, like Behr’s Polar Bear. Paint your radiator box the same colour as your new cabinets and install a blond wood shelf above. Then, swap out your print for a round mirror with a dark frame. This will be a great pairing. Finally, add an all-weather doormat, plus a runner to bring warmth and define the space; an indoor-outdoor rug is a great option for this high-traffic area. Enjoy your new organized entry!
