super style for every room Absolutely beautiful designs to try—they’ll only look like you spent a bundle.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH IKEA

Leafy bedding and light woods: chic, naturally

super style

in your entry Good looks, personality, practicality—this spot is a win-win-win. A slim coat rack doesn’t take up much real estate (and even has a bench). An oval mirror and rectangular shoe cabinets below it create a cool dynamic of angles-meets-curves. Definitely an entry you’d want to come home to!

BACKPACK DRÖMSÄCK 6-gallon polyester backpack in olive-green

Every bit as chic as it is decluttering. And it’s built with repurposed wood, too.

SHOE CABINETS TRONES 20 ½"W x 7 ⅛"D x 15 ⅜"H polypropylene shoe cabinets in black

UMBRELLA KNALLA umbrella in green/black

PANGET 33 ½"W x 16 ⅛"D x 78 ¾"H pine coat rack with storage bench in dark gray

Sold as a pair and just 7 inches deep, they’re an easy fit in an entry or hallway. Plus you can drop your keys or wallet on top.

BOX LURPASSA lidded 5"W x 7"D x 5"H seagrass box

BASKET TORKIS 22 ⅞"W x 15"D x 11"H polyethylene laundry basket in beige

MIRROR LINDBYN 47 ¼" x 23 ⅝" aluminum mirror in black

The black frame and elegant shape reflect your great taste while making a small area appear larger.

super style

in your dining area When pattern and texture get together, it’s never a dull meal. Oversize canvas art is always a fast upgrade—one and done. Add in a jazzy pendant, pop-ofcolor flowers in a nubby green vase, and an iconic offset-striped rug for a li’l home zone that racks up big-time appeal.

TABLE RUNNER MITTBIT 14" x 51" cotton table runner in black/ beige/white PENDANT MOJNA/HEMMA 19"-diameter plastic pendant lamp in white

TABLE NORRÅKER 49 ¼"W x 29 ⅛"D x 29 ⅛"H birch table

MUG FÄRGRIK stoneware mug in dark turquoise

Its simple lines and subtle grain pattern go nicely with any dining room style.

CHAIR ODGER wood and plastic composite chair in blue

RUG STOCKHOLM 5'7" x 7'10" handmade wool rug in stripe black/ off-white

This fan fave is not only handwoven and made of durable wool, but the pattern is also on both sides, so it’ll last even longer.

super style

in your living room Sure, you can have a reading nook without an actual nook. Setting down a memorable rug marks your territory. The armchair is sleek yet chill-out comfy; a graphic pillow, asymmetrically arranged cubbies, and a mini side table (which comes in white) dress it up. Go on, relax.

LAMP RANARP 60"-tall powder-coatedsteel lamp in black

CUBBY EKET 13 ¾"W x 9 ⅞"D x 13 ¾"H fiberboard cabinet in pale pink

CACTI SJÄLSLIGT stoneware decoration

Retro charm that’s a readerpleaser: The arm and shade are adjustable, and the sturdy base keeps it stable.

BOWL STRIMMIG 6"-diameter stoneware bowl in pink

RUG TANNISBY 5'3" x 7'7" handmade wool rug in gray black

PLANTER GRADVIS 4 ¾"tall stoneware plant pot

Position the reversible back cushion to suit your seating preference. And don’t be fooled by the fabric’s pretty sheen; it’s made to resist wear and tear.

what color is that?

Awesome paint shades and the stories behind them.

green onyx BY SHERWIN-WILLIAMS

“For my clients’ 1920s home, I had in mind a color that felt historic and modern. This green delivers! Popular in that era, it looks like copper patina, yet next to the dark hood and brass accents, it’s fresh and spring-y.” —Micaela Quinton, @copperskydesignremodel, Atlanta, GA

HGTV Magazine 13

alchemist BY HGTV HOME BY SHERWIN-WILLIAMS

“When I saw this yellow on an apron in IKEA, I knew it was the ideal sunny-but-not-blinding shade for the tiny bathroom in an RV we rent out that sits on our farm. I freehanded the mural with a level and a coffee cup lid. Guests have asked about the color so often that I might need to include it in our listing!” —Else Kerkmann, @else.kerkmann, Bend, OR

fun decorating

brinjal BY FARROW & BALL

“A moody tone, not too purple or too red, was what my client was after for her home office. Dark orchid had the right mix of both and I went, literally, all in—on the walls, trim, ceiling, and built-ins. It’s definitely a statement, though the color keeps it cozy. Her orange velvet sofa and floral shade brighten the space.” —Mary Patton, @marypattondesign, Houston, TX

kendall charcoal BY BENJAMIN MOORE

“Tons of people are doing light gray bedrooms these days. I liked a deeper hue because my room is kind of large, and I knew a charcoal would rein it in. Unlike many, it has great depth and warmth.” —Lindsey Black, @lindseyblackinteriors, Memphis, TN

ferrous BY BEHR

“The couple who lives in this house didn’t know if they were having a boy or a girl. The clay color, inspired by the burnt orange in the rug, works for either. And decals make it youthful. Because it’s not a traditional nursery choice, it won’t feel babyish as their child grows. They had a girl. I hear she’s pretty happy here!” —Coby Starck, @cobystarckdesign, Victoria, British Columbia

jay BY PORTOLA

“I wanted a blue in the dining room that would nod to the Pacific Ocean—it’s a few blocks away from this home—and texture, but I couldn’t find a wallpaper that knocked me out. Then I remembered limewash. It’s applied in thin, watery layers. The brushstrokes give the effect of movement, like waves.” —Natalie Myers, @nataliemyers, Los Angeles, CA

ravishing red BY BENJAMIN MOORE

“A feisty color can make even a laundry room a place you want to be. This classic red has a slight black undertone that complements the other blacks in the room. Plaid wallpaper boosts the whimsy while still allowing red to be the star.” —Betsy Helm and Kiley Baun, @shophousedesign, Philadelphia, PA

fun decorating

juicy peach BY VALSPAR

“Instead of buying a headboard, I painted the arch on the wall behind our bed with some leftovers from a previous project. The color provides instant gratification: Once it’s on the wall, you feel alive and optimistic and peppy. That’s helpful since we’re now empty nesters!” —Lilly Ortiz, @lillithortiz, Orlando, FL

vine leaf “It was once a dingy secondhand white dresser, and I restored it for my husband. I chose hunter green—a favorite of his—and applied three coats over a weekend, removing the wood knobs to keep them natural, like the top. Once we moved the piece into our bedroom, I did a vintage gallery wall to complete the eclectic feel.” —Katie Varela, @our.home.on.a.hill, Lake Forest, CA

IT’S (S IlL!) ALL ABOUT

Because it sets the tone wherever it goes—and it goes everywhere.

SYLVIE LEE FOR APARTMENT THERAPY

pink is cheerful When designer Maude Coudé’s client wondered if the thrill of a pink kitchen would wear off, she had one response: “How can you get tired of a color that happy?!” Millennial pink has been brightening homes and spirits since it became a thing five years ago. In this Montreal space, blush cabinets and rosy pendants are fun on fun.

HGTV Magazine 29

pink says “welcome!” Bugbite lotion isn’t on most people’s mood boards, but Calamine by Farrow & Ball is just what the designer ordered for a dark oak door on a Prior Lake, MN, house. “It evokes the same childhood comfort, and it makes you feel good,” says designer Gabriela Laboy. Terra-cotta-color ceramic urns are aged just enough to make the entry exceptionally warm and step-right-in.

pink is pure flattery There’s good Zoom lighting for days in this Phoenix, MD, home office. “Painting just the back of the built-in gave the whole room a glow,” says designer Laura Hodges. (It’s Odessa Pink by Benjamin Moore.) Sticking with white accent pieces produced even more of a sanctuary aura— helpful, says Hodges, “when you’re the sole female in a house full of boys.”

pink has sugar and spice

“People always ask how my husband handles all the pink I like to use,” says designer Caitlin Wilson. “You have to be strategic about it!” She usually combines it with dark blue, as she did for her Dallas, TX, living room. Larger-than-life blooms on the wallpaper and leopard-print pillows (both from her line) pack a peachy punch. Says Wilson, “It’s a great place to unwind that isn’t too sweet.”

fun decorating

pink is playful Pink walls and flowery touches in a little girl’s room can look original— and supercute. Designer Lisa Floyd chose Resounding Rose by SherwinWilliams for a child in Lakewood, TX, and hung peppy resin flowers (vivaterra.com has similar ceramic kinds). Metallic stencils on the wall by the trundle bed mimic floating bubbles, while the beaded mirror from Uttermost and pom-poms on the curtains come adorably full circle.

A vanity is one of designer Mindy Gayer’s favorite spots to pink out. “In a smaller space, a surprising color choice has a real impact without having to make a big commitment,” she says. Gayer went with Just Peachy by Benjamin Moore for the Newport Beach, CA, bathroom. It picks up on the blush shade in the marble tiles. No surprise: Brass accents pair gorgeously with light pink.

how bad is it to plant seeds that have been sitting around for a while? You won’t get the best bang for your buck. “Unlike milk, seeds can’t spoil, so you’ll still grow tasty fruits, vegetables, and herbs—but probably not as many of them, since the older the seeds are, the fewer will germinate,” says Rebecca Sears, chief gardening guru at Ferry-Morse seed company. Seeds generally have a shelf life of approximately one year; over time, their stored energy gets used up, and most varieties become less viable. “The biggest risk is disappointment,” says Sears. Why take the chance of a less lush garden or settle for a smaller crop of cukes and zukes? Green thumbs up for sticking with seeds that are in their prime, or replacing the packet.

While sliding your foot all the way in may be comfy and time-saving, ultimately it’s no good for the shoe or for you. “Wearing shoes or sneakers improperly could cause trauma to the heel,” says William S. Long, D.P.M., a podiatrist based in Simpsonville, SC, and a spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association. You’re more prone to inflammation as well as ankle sprains, since the back of your footwear (officially called the “counter,” FYI) controls the motion of your heel, offering support for walking. Driving with collapsed backs is dangerous because a shoe can slip off, potentially leading you to swerve the car. For anyone who craves that free-heel feel, check out slip-on mule sneaks: backless and cute.

how bad is it to forget to remove spot cleaner from a rug? If your “Eeek, the rug!” recall happens within a few hours of spritzing, and it isn’t a delicate material like silk, you should be fine, says Carolyn Forté, director of the Home Appliances & Cleaning Products Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute. Just make sure to spray the spot with water to dissolve the cleaner, blot with a white cloth, and try not to go at it too rigorously. “Once carpet cleaner dries, you have to work harder to get it out, and rubbing can mat the fibers of a rug and make it appear worn,” she says. To beat future space-outs, set a timer or try her hack: Plop a bowl upside down over the stain after you’ve sprayed on remover—you can’t miss it.

how bad is it if your kid plays with the dog’s toys? Sharing is definitely not caring. You may have heard that dog saliva is “cleaner” than a human’s, but that’s untrue, says Gail R. Hansen, D.V.M., a veterinary consultant in Washington, D.C., who works on public health issues. “Think of where dogs put their mouths,” she says. (Picture Scrappy sniffing at other doggies’ doo during walks.) Should a child handling a dog’s chew toy put it (or their hands) in their mouth, bacteria could make them sick. Keep pet and human toys in separate bins, and try not to buy a pooch stuffed animals that resemble your kid’s. “This is what’s fair to your dog, who deserves to have his own toys,” says Dr. Hansen.

Oh no they didn’t! Your stuff is your stuff, however ancient or decrepit. But understanding a partner’s intentions could help you calm down, say Nate and Kaley Klemp, coauthors of The 80/80 Marriage. Maybe they think that college sweatshirt with the giant hole in the sleeve isn’t doing your look any favors, or they went on a cleaning binge and failed to realize that every single one of your 27 bowling trophies still means something to you. (Wait—ponder that.) “After hearing your partner out, follow with a clear request to ask before they throw or give belongings away,” says Nate Klemp. To head off decluttering drama, designate a box in your basement or garage for items destined to be donated. “This will allow both of you to look them over and talk about what to give away and what to keep.”

1 cup tomato pasta or pizza sauce, heated

Heat oven to 375°F. Separate dough into 8 triangles; pat out each triangle slightly.

2

Place 3 slices pepperoni, slightly overlapping, on center of each triangle. Top each with about 1 tablespoon cheese.

3

Roll up, starting at shortest side of triangle and rolling to opposite point. Place rolls, point side down, on ungreased cookie sheet.

4

Bake at 375°F for 10 to 14 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from cookie sheet. Serve warm crescents with warm pasta sauce for dipping.

Guess what? It’s SO GOOD to snap a pic before you toss sentimental stuff. You’ll hang onto the memory while letting go of the boy-milking-cow figurine from grandma that doesn’t quite bring joy. In one study, people encouraged to take photos of objects donated more than those who didn’t.

…it would share lots and lots of design and self-care pointers. Listen up! You don’t have to use a nightstand. Side tables, demilune tables, small trunks, stools with rectangular seats, or even plant stands can out-fab your basic nightstand. Alternately, ditch them and mount floating shelves on either side of your bed.

Hey, crafters, how about a tablecloth?

Show your dining table a little r-e-s-p-e-c-t by throwing on an oilcloth or a vinyl tablecloth before doing projects, or by using a desk protector or dedicated place mats. If you’re a constant crafter, consider investing in a foldable table pad you could tuck away in a closet.

Repress your matchy urges— mix the chairs! The effect is pure homey-fun. Save bucks by refreshing your current dining set with paint or new fabrics in complementary shades, or enjoy the hunt for vintage finds. It’s nice to match the head chairs to get some cohesion.

I’m actually happier without a lamp. They’re total space hogs. A wall sconce frees up the top of the table, making room for an alarm clock, a book, and even a pretty dish to hold jewelry. Try a plug-in sconce for instant gratification (see page 59 for sconces galore).

Ahem, a big vase or two would look great. Much love to books, but you’ve gotta have character. Display vases, art, bowls, and sculptures, new and old. Rest some on top of books stacked horizontally, and rope in others as bookends.

I can help with your MIA remote control. Bins, boxes, and baskets will corral electronic gadgets, chargers, little toys, and mementos. When placed on the bottom shelf, a large container visually grounds a bookcase, and it’ll be within reach for tots.

I like a good rug. It defines dining spaces in large or eatin kitchens, and prevents chair-leg scratches on wood floors. Spills may be as inevitable as Taco Tuesday, but polypropylene and treated nylon rugs won’t easily stain. For extra camouflage, consider darker colors and patterns.

There’s a right (cough) way to dust (cough) my books. The ideal technique is to push dust away from the spine toward the book’s opening; that way, it won’t stick in the binding. Instead of a feather duster, use a microfiber or cloth kind, which grabs dust as opposed to launching it into the air.

home + help The answer is: drawer dividers. Forever frustrated by overstuffed drawers? Imagine how they feel! Section yours off with adjustable wood or plastic dividers, then look forward to getting ready faster in the mornings and never overbuying socks again.

Sometimes taller is better. A double-wide dresser, grand as it is, might dominate a room on the smaller side. Use vertical space to your advantage: A tall, sleek piece can still fit plenty of clothes. If you’re sticking with an existing large dresser, leave the top relatively free of tchotchkes to air it out.

No need to hang anything above me.

Lint rollers are your friend and mine. Doing a quick sweep (reusable rollers work as well as disposable sticky-paper versions) is enough to keep headboards looking fresh. Handle kid handprints or hair dye and pen mark stains with a fabric spot cleaner ASAP after they happen.

It’s true! A headboard can be core decor in a room, and more supportive for your back than a pile of pillows as you watch House Hunters. It stabilizes a bed, too, ensuring better shut-eye if you have a tossand-turn partner.

Coasters are so cute and colorful. Just saying! The better they look, the more you won’t mind leaving them out—encouraging and enabling your family to finally quit leaving water rings and heat marks from cups. No-slip silicone or unglazed ceramic kinds with cork bottoms are your best bet.

a o Hi g aLl f r iT R L ElL y A little TLC goes a long way to letting pieces live their best life. Dust regularly with a damp cloth to beat a dulling film of dust; take care not to slam cabinet doors (apply those self-adhesive clear dots); avoid banging the vacuum into the legs of seats, tables, and dressers (a bumper for the head comes in handy); and if pets hang on the sofa, protect it with a throw or blanket.

Get to know my cousin, the ottoman. They’re typically smaller (good for tight sitting areas) and softer (good for kids) than coffee tables, and many come with storage (woo!). If you’re needing a place to plop drinks and snacks, top yours with a tray.

I’m into that hourglass pillow chop. Plump a pillow by making indents on either side, hands slightly cupped. Also for fluff’s sake, order an insert one size up from the cover. (If the cover is 18 inches, get a 20-inch insert.)

Pay attention to seat depth before buying me online. It’s the measurement from the front of the seat cushion to where the back cushion starts, not the depth of the sofa itself. Anything 24 inches and up should be very comfy. Measure your current cushions for a benchmark. And do not buy a sofa without reading the reviews—there’s usually consensus on how loungeworthy they are.

OUR FLUENT-IN-FURNITURE EXPERTS: Melissa Homer, chief cleaning officer at MaidPro; Rachel Rosenthal, organizing expert and founder of Rachel and Company; Lexie Sachs, textiles director at the Good Housekeeping Institute; Killy Scheer, designer and founder of Scheer & Co; Alison Wilkinson, designer at West Elm

Actually use those vacuum attachments. With their concentrated suction, they’re made for keeping sofas pristine. Remove cushions; give ’em a once-over with the upholstery tool; glide it over the sofa frame to snatch crumbs, dust, and hair; then rejoice when you find that earring you lost a year ago.

FESS UP: WHAT PLACE DESPERATELY NEEDS DECLUTTERING?

CLEANER-UPPER THAT YOU SWEAR BY?

MOST AMAZING CLEANING SCENT?

Our garage, where we stash excess stuff. I’m making stacks of holiday decor and sorting through clothes.

Mind Your Own Beeswax from Amy Howard at Home. Wood gets dehydrated, and this keeps it polished and free of cracks.

I gravitate toward citrus. It’s what clean smells like.

Traditional. For me, auto-spray leaves a residue.

The playroom. I finally brought in clear plastic bins for toys. Since the kids can see inside, they won’t dump them out to find favorites.

Grandma’s Secret Spot Remover is the bomb for getting stains out of all sorts of fabric.

Lavender and lemon verbena for everyday; apple cider vinegar and white sage for deep cleaning.

Auto-spray forever. It’s more sanitary, in my opinion. I don’t even want to think about traditional mopping.

I’m hitting every room! Decluttering is like eating cookies— once you start, you don’t want to stop.

A spray bottle filled with vodka. It tackles dirt and it’s antibacterial.

I secretly love the smell of vinegar. It’s like house cologne.

I’m going with steam mop. That heat can remove almost anything, including spilled red wine.

My basement. It’s the place where things go to disappear forever, but now it’s destined to be a big, beautiful guest bedroom.

A woodsy scented room spray from West Elm I bought a few years ago and have been savoring ever since. Reminds me of my Survivor days.

Our mudroom, as it’s overrun with ski and snow gear. Once the season changes, it feels good to box it all up.

Homemade carpet deodorizer: 1 cup of baking soda to 15 drops essential oil, in a mason jar, with holes in the lid for sprinkling.

The closet off my laundry room, where I store tools and extra decor like lamps. The best way to organize is to take everything out.

Bissell Spot & Stain Spotlifter can erase a variety of marks from a rug or upholstery—a must with a dog.

We’re moving, so massive springcleaning came early. Hot tip: Put duplicate kitchen items up for grabs on your porch, then email neighbors.

Grab Green All Purpose Cleaner. It works, even when kids “decorate” a wall with marker or crayon.

Does pushing crumbs under the rug count? Ha! I do squeegee the glass door of the shower while I’m in it.

I DIY it every so often, and I leave aluminum foil at the bottom to catch crumbs.

Yes, because I’m sweating at the end—I turn up Thomas Rhett and dance while I dust.

If they’re still nice and fashionable, I either consign clothes or take them to a homeless shelter.

Plopping dirty clothes into the laundry and making the beds leaves the house looking clean, even when it’s not.

A clothing charity in my neighborhood. I like to keep it local.

Use vinegar—I told you I love it!—and a lint-free flour sack towel on mirrors and glass objects for major sparkle.

Self-clean. Because it’s better to run when the oven is already hot, I turn it on after whipping up a big meal.

I have a “Please remove your shoes” sign, though I’ve yet to institute that policy.

Do a little bit every day. Taking cleaning breaks away from the computer also helps reboot my brain.

I just discovered my oven has a self-clean function, and now I’m free to make huge messes.

Yep, think running up and down stairs over and over. I skip real cardio on deep-clean days.

Bold moves create wall-to-wall whoa in Silver Spring, MD.

t

he reaction people typically have when they first look around Tamar and David Volosov’s house: “I don’t think I could ever do this, but it totally works!” Built in 2020, their Silver Spring, MD, home served as a blank canvas for Tamar’s vision. “I’m all about mixing crazy-bright colors and strong patterns in a way that feels a little fancy, not fussy,” says Tamar, who admits she might be making up for lost time (she grew up in a mostly white house). Razzle-dazzle to thrill her three children and guests also mattered; the couple have been known to host 30-plus friends for Friday night Shabbat dinners. Tamar gave designer Dana Schwartz the green (and blue and pink and purple) light, and no room was left unadorned. “While outof-the-box glamour isn’t for everyone,” says Tamar, “it’s definitely for us.”

GLAM SOFA By Lee Industries, its curves and golden legs say “luxe;” stain-treated speckled fabric from Romo says, “Kids are welcome.”

GLAM CEILING “Normally you’d have a neutral ceiling and a gorgeous rug—we flipped it,” says designer Dana. Teal green wallpaper by Romo is yet more of a showstopper next to the dark blue walls.

GLAM CHAIR As eyepopping as the fabric by S. Harris is, those acrylic arms are standouts, too. (It’s from Bernhardt Furniture Company.) The clear material, also in the coffee table (from Century Furniture) and curtain rods, balances the room’s vivacity— but is posh in its own right.

GLAM GLITZ When you have brass counter stools (from Crate & Barrel) and aged brass trim on the island, even pizza-making is chic. The gleam theme continues in diamond-shaped Circa Lighting pendants, cabinet hardware from Top Knobs, and a custom range hood.

GLAM HEADBOARD Sweet dreams are made of this velvet abstract fabric by Holly Hunt. The scalloped edge of the bed mirrors the loops of the bead chandelier from Shades of Light.

GLAM BENCH Although the hues on the Arteriors piece are muted, the design is packed with panache. Says Tamar, “I wanted the bedroom to be a little less crazy than the rest of the house so we could fall asleep.”

GLAM BED Keira has said it makes her feel princess-y (it’s from RH Teen). “A canopy is a great way to draw the eye up to the 9-foot ceiling and utilize the whole space,” says Dana. The butterfly wallpaper and curtain fabric are by Christian Lacroix.

GLAM RUG Tamar scored it from her grandparents’ home after they downsized. Yes, hand-me-downs can be glam! A rug is layered beneath for added coverage.

house tours GLAM WALL Looks like a mural but (surprise, surprise) it’s wallpaper, by Pierre Frey. The flashiness raises the relaxation factor for Tamar. “It’s free-form, like a child’s finger painting,” she says.

GLAM BATHTUB “You can’t be unhappy when you’re soaking in a purple tub,” says Tamar. She got the idea after seeing a yellow one on Instagram; Dana suggested purple to match the wallpaper.

•DO SUBTLE HITS OF REFLECTIVE MATERIALS—think wallpaper with glimmer, pieces made of acrylic (it’s trending), and pearlescent backsplash tiles like the ones in the Volosovs’ kitchen. Sometimes less is more.

•LIGHT IT UP with sensational chandeliers and fixtures; Tamar went for it in every room.

chilled out A family haven with cool ’tude in Larchmont, NY.

j

aime Willey wanted her home in Larchmont, NY, to have a distinct look (no surprise, given that she’s a designer), but she was equally determined to make it a relaxing place for her busy family. The answer was as clear as black-and-white—put together in the most compelling way. Laid-back locales served as inspiration. “I’m into the simplicity of the designs in California, Oregon, and Australia,” says Jaime. “When I find houses I love on Instagram, they’re inevitably from there.” The farmhouse (built in 1837) she and her husband, Stephen, had bought definitely needed serenity: “When we got the place, it had creaky floors, peeling siding, and lights that turned on in the middle of the night. It felt haunted!” Once the bones were in good shape, Jaime juxtaposed neutral mash-ups with pale wood and sprinkled in hip finds— proving that monotone doesn’t have to be the least bit mundane.

Clever projects fill a home in Austin, TX, with quirk.

w

henever Wendy Conklin is clothes shopping, she runs into the same challenge. “I see a great pattern on a top or a dress and I think, I wish I could upholster something with that! ” says Wendy, the designer behind Chair Whimsy. Unique fabric, wallpaper, and paint colors abound in the 2,840-square-foot Victorian in Austin, TX, that she shares with her husband, Blane. To Wendy, every textile, every vintage furniture find, every piece of art tells a story—the knockout wallpaper she discovered after hours of scrolling, the settee she drove across the state to get, the paintings done by her adult daughter. “Life is too short not to surround yourself with spaces you’ve lovingly created and put yourself into,” she says. “It brings a lot of joy.”

Of course the couple’s 11-yearold Boston terrier has a charismatic name: Nike, as in the Greek goddess (their first dog was Zeus).

FABULOUS SETTEE This antique had a cavedin seat before Wendy resuscitated it. The floral fabric is original; the hot pink velvet is her handiwork.

FABULOUS STAIRS To make the magic, Wendy cut and adhered Matisse-like wallpaper from Spoonflower.

FABULOUS CHAIRS An animal print basically functions as a neutral here; Wendy hand-painted the frames gold. “The chairs are from the 1890s and have more character than any new ones I could buy,” says Wendy.

Simple accents bookend a painting by artist Carrie Schmitt that, says Wendy, “is like having fresh flowers every day.”

FABULOUS COLOR SCHEME “When you fall for a fuchsia rug, one thing leads to another!” says Wendy. This beauty, from Manhattan Rugs, brings out the hue in the settee fabric by Clarke & Clarke.

FABULOUS BED For an easy bedroom spiff-up, after putting in fab blue and white shades from Smith & Noble, Wendy painted the bed’s metal frame with dark teal chalk paint (Aubusson Blue by Annie Sloan). A pileon of pillows and a blanket from Anthropolgie also reinvigorated the room.

FABULOUS PAINT JOB A second guest room is yet more proof of the power of PIY (Paint It Yourself). Wendy did Decisive Yellow by SherwinWilliams on the shutters and desk chair, and matched a desk to the green wicker nightstand from a garage sale ($5!).

FABULOUS LAMP Wendy upcycled a Goodwill light with a new shade; it’s covered with the same print as the wallpaper in her studio.

PINK BRICK and sage shutters bolster the home’s quaint English countryside feel. “When we meet new people in the neighborhood, they tell us they love ‘the pink house,’ ” say homeowners Ann and Britt Radford. THE ENGLISH IVY used to be ground cover. After noticing it gracing the sides of other homes in the area, the Radfords let it grow. A GABLE ROOF is both majestic and practical— precipitation slides right down, so snow and ice can’t sit around and create water damage.

Gorgeous, yes, but it’s only OK on brick and mortar that’s in good shape; otherwise, it can grow inside cracks and damage walls. And it’s not advisable for wood or stucco. Pros recommend trimming twice a year and redirecting tendrils away from windows, trim, and gutters.

COPPER ROOF ACCENTS were added by owners Tina and Danny Limes. “The finials and chimney caps draw out our home’s unique style,” Tina says. THAT’S THE ORIGINAL DOOR, 93 years young. Its aqua blue hue walks the line between classic and current. THE CONCRETE PORCH needed to stay small to suit the home’s scale. Tina and Danny had the old one repoured and extended to fit a pair of chairs. “We face a park,” she says, “so we like to sit and people-watch.”

Stories that will spark appreciation for your own friendly ’hood— or a bunch of new traditions. AS TOLD TO ALYSSA LONGOBUCCO ILLUSTRATED BY MY TIEN PHAM

“I was pregnant during the heart of the pandemic in 2020 and a baby shower wasn’t going to happen, or so I thought. Out of the blue, I got called to come to the house across the street. Although it was pouring, a bunch of neighbors were there with soggy ‘Congratulations!’ signs hanging from their umbrellas and boxes of cupcakes tucked into their jackets. We sat under the shelter of the covered patio and had a blast. I can’t wait to tell my daughter about it someday.” —Emily Bunce, Astoria, NY

local flavor

“As a kid, I helped my dad plant a maple tree in our yard and I loved watching it grow. After I had a house of my own, I got a maple and a few fruit trees. One day I noticed a neighbor filling a bag with pears—we encouraged people to help themselves—and it gave me an idea. A group of us went knocking on doors, organizing to plant fruit trees. We’re up to more than 200 fruit trees and shrubs of all kinds, with the hope to keep growing every year.” —Laura Alexander, Decatur, GA

Neighborhood gatherings don’t get any better than our annual adult prom. Most recently, the dress code was tacky or classy. We voted for a prom king and queen, danced the night away to a DJ, and nobody had to spike the punch, because it already was!” —Dena Hill, Lexington, SC

“A neighbor who likes to travel became our kids’ postcard fairy! He started writing ones from his stash, leaving them in our mailbox weekly and yelling, ‘Check your mail!’ each time. He’d share personal stories about places and ask engaging questions, like how many chandeliers they could count in the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles. Sometimes one good neighbor can open up the world to a child.” —Dana Gottheim Childress, Washington, D.C.

Our neighbors are our miniature Bernedoodle’s second parents. When my fiancé and I came home from adopting Chubbs, we found an ‘It’s a boy!’ balloon tied to our front door. They bring over fresh-baked treats and even got him a cooling bandana for the summer. In return, Chubbs likes to show off his tricks to their son, especially when there are belly rubs involved.” —Nicole Antieri, Herndon, VA

“We live on a unicorn of a street where children are raised communally and a neighbor delivers a cocktail of your choice on your birthday. It’s also home to what we call ‘driveway dinners’— our equivalent of a pop-up restaurant. A family will let everyone know that they’re barbecuing and put out tables and chairs. Whoever’s around comes with sides, snacks, and drinks, and we hang for hours.” —Emily Ehlers, Des Moines, IA

“You know the book The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants? Our neighborhood is like The Sisterhood of The Traveling Sump Pump. During Hurricane Ida last August, a lot of houses near mine flooded. My family had a portable pump we inherited from a neighbor who’d moved away—it had been community property, and he gave it to me with that understanding. At around 2 a.m. I hauled it out of our garage and lugged it over to a basement that had 2 feet of water. For the next day, the pump got passed from house to house. It’s the ugliest most beautiful thing.” —Kristen Ryan, Maplewood, NJ

local flavor “I grew up in a neighborhood in which folks always looked out for each other, and it’s never stopped. After my dad passed away two years ago and my mom was diagnosed with cancer, our neighbors took it upon themselves to bring her meals and treats, shovel snow off her walkway, and drive her to appointments. Now that my mom has completed her treatments, we plan to throw a big BBQ as a thank-you.” —Joanna Ames, Portland, OR

“Every family on our block hosts a different holiday party. One handles Easter and Halloween, another covers New Year’s and replays a clip of the ball dropping for the younger kids who can’t stay up late. Our family is in charge of Valentine’s Day festivities, complete with sweets, crafts, games, and goodie bags. We’re glad to be known as the party neighborhood!” —Jen Ciappetta, Cortlandt Manor, NY

When a local gazebo was slated to be torn down, families were heartbroken—we all had fond memories of events and picnics there. To save it, the neighborhood dads banded together and spent every weekend for the next few months rebuilding it, over beers. We’re grateful that it’s back to being a lively gathering —Allison Karzenski, Tiverton, RI place. It definitely takes a village.”

or two decades, Dana Smith made do with a miniscule kitchen in the Bellflower, CA, home she bought after her divorce. At just under 100 square feet, “it was barely large enough to cook in, let alone chop anything,” she says. Dana and her then 3-year-old son, Christopher, dined at a little table at first. “When he got bigger, it was more comfortable to eat on the living room couch.” Cut to 2020: After spending more time than ever cooking at home during the pandemic, she was raring to redo. Dana worked with designer Linda Hayslett to put an addition onto the house that nearly tripled the kitchen’s size. “I like having people hang out at the banquette while I cook,” says Dana. “Especially Christopher, when he visits—at last he can sprawl out!”

Linda first laid them out on the floor to decide on the configuration—ultimately, though, she wanted a perfectly imperfect arrangement. 7 BANQUETTE A custom L-shaped kind is so roomy and so inviting, says Dana, “that sometimes I just lie here and watch TV. It’s a vibe.” The flowery cushion fabric is by Pindler, and the patterned pillows are from Crane & Canopy. There’s storage beneath, which Dana uses as glorified junk drawers. 8 TABLE “After years of not getting to sit and eat at a table, I wanted a big one,” says Dana.
