ew things in life evoke a feeling or memory quite like a smell (that’s true of good and bad fragrances alike). When we moved into our new home a couple of years ago, I became Ġ[DWHG RQ ZHOO REVHVVHG ZLWK UHDOO\ D YHU\ IDLQW PHWDOOLF smell that lingered in the hallway. Thankfully, no one else seemed to notice and it soon disappeared after we removed the stair carpet and painted the walls. retty, minty green brings with it all the freshness and optimism of this time of year. The whiff of warmer weather signals new life, and this pastel shade epitomises the mood of spring with all its clarity and vigour. So, if you want to create a soft yet cheerful feeling in your home, this could be the perfect paint colour for you. All shades of green give us that connection to nature, but the transparency of pale mint ensures it’s uplifting rather than grounding. Thanks to its association with tropical seas and its fresh, get-up-and-go vibe, it’s an obvious choice for bathrooms, but I think it can add pep to many rooms in your home. In a busy family kitchen, try it on a tiled splashback for a bright update, or make a dark hallway feel light and open with mint walls. And if you turn the vibrancy right down to the palest shade, it’s soft enough for a tranquil bedroom – it looks divine paired with crisp white linen and pale wood floors. If following the trends is your thing, mint green is having a moment alongside its fellow ice-cream shades – pale pink, sorbet yellow and sky blue, which combine beautifully together. Just look to Miami’s South Beach for inspiration. The trick is to opt for clean lines, simple geometric patterns and minimal architectural shapes to give this party of pastels a very modern update. Aside from its youthful, joyful qualities, mint green also speaks of glamour when combined with monochrome; you only have to think of classic Art Deco interiors and the iconic Tiffany & Co packaging. It looks sharp against a chequerboard floor, a bold stripe or indeed industrial materials such as concrete and terrazzo. Whichever way you use it, mint green will put a spring in your step.

The seat of the Wishbone is made using sustainably sourced paper, hand-woven into a sturdy cord that is either dyed or bleached, depending on the ĠQLVK WKHQ OLJKWO\ ZD[HG It requires little to no maintenance and can last comfortably up to \HDUV The design icon: Carl Hansen & Son’s CH24 Wishbone chair. Who designed it: Hans J Wegner (left), described as ‘the master of the chair’ and a pioneer of the Danish Modern style. When & how: First created in 1949, the Wishbone has been in continuous production since it hit the market in 1950. It’s made by skilled craftspeople using sustainable wood and more than 100 metres of cord – the process involves more than 100 steps carried out by hand.

WHY WE LOVE IT Timeless and with an instantly recognisable profile, the CH24 Wishbone chair is furniture designer Hans Wegner’s definitive creation for the Carl Hansen & Son group. Inspired by chairs from the Ming dynasty, its form comes from its sculptural back, which curves round to create the armrests. The structure is made by steaming wood and bending it into its distinctive Y shape. An icon of Danish Modern design, the Wishbone’s appeal reaches well beyond Scandinavia; a quarter of all the chairs now
produced are sold in Japan, while versions of the design are held in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT FOR EVER Durable and produced with the highest-quality materials, the Wishbone chair is made to last. The design is versatile, too, meaning it won’t date: many owners keep them for decades as the rest of their decoration and furnishing changes. In contemporary homes, the chair can look fresh and light, while it has the gravitas to hold its own in more traditional spaces. In recent years, different combinations of seat material, wood type and colour finish have become available (as shown here), but the characteristic shape of the chair has never changed – and never will. There are countless reproductions available, but while they may offer an element of the CH24’s good looks, they won’t be of the same quality. The real thing is an investment piece – and impossible to beat. Prices for the Wishbone chair start at about £480. odern clean lines, bold colour choices and carefully contained collections of books, magazines and well-cared-for plants create a calm yet undeniably stunning apartment in a leafy pocket of south-east London. ‘I think our style has evolved by osmosis,’ says Kristy Noble, a photographer who bought the property with her partner Sean Griffin, a TV editor, four years ago. ‘My childhood was a major influence: I grew up surrounded by the North Yorkshire countryside, and my mum had several creative jobs over the years – she was a florist, ran an antiques shop and managed an art gallery – and she loved taking me to National Trust properties and other historic homes. On our road trips, we would often visit car boot sales to pick up interesting pieces to bring home. Sean, meanwhile, grew up in Kent and his parents met when they worked together at a local auction house, which was where their shared love of antiques began. Subsequently, his childhood home was filled with their incredible finds.’ After studying an art foundation course in Leeds and then photography in Preston, Kristy embarked on a creative career in London, where her love of interiors is now the focus of her daily life. ‘I work in some beautiful locations,’ she enthuses, ‘photographing

‘We love the richness of the walls. A room doesn’t need lots of light to take a dark tone’ incredible furniture, rugs, artwork and textiles. Over the years, these images were stored at the back of my mind ready to draw from when Sean and I had our own place so we could create a home that feels exactly right for the two of us. ‘As we both work freelance, we have a fair bit of kit that needs to be stored at home,’ continues Kristy, ‘and although I had a bit of a clear-out recently, I still have a massive library of interiors magazines, so it’s important for us to keep our home clean and tidy – good storage is an absolute essential!’ Luckily, this 1960s apartment is typical of the period and has a lot of built-in cupboards, but the couple did add some extra freestanding shelves with a contemporary powder-coated finish in the living room to house Kristy’s collection. Here, the couple’s strong aesthetic continues with a dramatic earthy shade used on every wall, not just a ‘feature wall’, and the choice of an eye-catching rug that ties all the elements together perfectly, from those sleek white steel shelves and the soft grey sofa to the black plastic Joe Colombo chair, and even the television. ‘The paint colour is Little Greene’s Light Bronze Green,’ says Kristy. ‘We love its richness and depth, and it’s very comforting. I don’t think a room needs lots of light to take a dark tone. Similarly, in the hallway we chose black to lean into its lack of natural light rather than fight it. ‘The rug was a bit of an indulgence,’ admits Kristy. ‘I was working on a shoot and completely fell for this piece by textile artist 72 housebeautiful.com/uk

It was a bit more than we really wanted to spend, so I looked around for something similar for less money, but I just couldn’t find anything anywhere near as perfect for this room. In the end, Sean and I decided as we truly loved it, we should work to save the money and treat ourselves.’ Kristy’s photography skills have actually saved the couple money elsewhere along the way. ‘I’ve swapped my services for a few things round the apartment,’ she explains, ‘such as the poured-concrete kitchen worktop, the stool in the dining area and the art over our bed. This old-fashioned bartering system has definitely helped keep our budget in check. I think, with everything that has happened in the past few years, small businesses and freelancers are being more flexible and inventive with how they operate.’ Kristy and Sean certainly wanted to think just as creatively at home. ‘Neither of us has ever wanted to follow trends,’ says Kristy. ‘We’ve picked up pieces and ideas along the way and pulled them all together with colour. I think that’s why, after living here for a few years, we still love the way our home looks, and we wouldn’t change a thing. A whistle-stop tour of Ottoline de Vries’s London home feels like plunging headfirst into a swatch book of prints and patterns. Kabuki actors gaze from lampshades, Victorian chairs hum with pop art primaries, over-scaled tulips cascade across a dining room wall… Like colourful bohemians gatecrashing a sedate garden party, unorthodox clashes of motif and hue bring exuberance to the neat, 1930s semi with its tiled porch and compact fireplaces. ‘We Dutch have a saying: “Just be normal, that’s crazy enough.” It’s part of our Calvinistic upbringing; we don’t like to overdo things. You can see that in our interiors – Dutch style is calm and minimalist,’ says Ottoline, a wallpaper and textile designer whose colourful, individual prints are sought out by leading designers. ‘In Britain, you’re much more open to mixing patterns and styles – that’s why I felt instantly at home when we moved here.’ Ottoline and her husband were drawn to the tranquillity of the house, which is tucked into a hillside row of inter-war properties. ‘The south-facing terrace looks over a small wood,’ she adds. ‘We’re in north London, but surrounded by greenery – we almost feel as if we’re in the country.’ Like an increasing number of people, Ottoline rents her home. So for a designer who ‘enjoys a bit of theatre’, the painted-white-to-let interior was an added incentive to sign the lease. ‘Here was a chance to go a bit crazy with the decoration,’ says Ottoline. An aesthetically inclined landlady was another bonus. ‘She’s allowed us to hang wallpaper and pictures, and put our stamp on the property,’ she adds. Ottoline traces her resourcefulness to growing up, one of four, in a rambling, antique-filled house in the southern Netherlands. ‘My

mother did everything: made curtains, painted furniture, upholstered antiques,’ explains Ottoline. ‘She taught us how to wallpaper a room and how to steam it off. Her favourite saying is, “Where there’s a will there’s way,”’ she says pointing out the make-do curtains in the bedroom – simple linen panels pegged over the existing drapery. ‘There was no point in making new ones, so I improvised.’ Upstairs, a pretty antique desk was a present from her aristocratic grandmother, another key influence. ‘She was a teacher who taught herself woodworking. She made me a beautiful four-poster and a desk,’ she remembers. In pursuit of a ‘safe profession’, Ottoline trained as a lawyer. ‘But when my husband and I bought our first house together, in The Hague, I became obsessed with decorating,’ she explains. ‘I wanted to create a wonderful world for my children at home, wallpapering their rooms and hunting for antiques. I fell in love with my new hobby and my day job began to feel like a distraction from what I really wanted to do.’ Friends began to commission pieces of furniture from her, but the spark Ottoline needed came when she won a prize in a competition to produce a design inspired by the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum’s permanent collection. ‘I’d done a course on computer design, which opened my eyes to a world of possibilities,’ she explains. Small, historical details, ‘the things that others might not notice’, such as the sash on a historical costume, are the things that inspire her vivid patterns. With her keen eye for the overlooked, Ottoline has peppered the house with unusual antiques. The Chinoiserie chairs in the dining room are from Amsterdam: ‘I bought them from a guy who lived on a houseboat full of junk – I don’t think he realised how nice they are,’ she says. There are market steals, such as a French chest of drawers and some wine bottles that gleam in the hall. In the dining room, the convivial rustic dining table was a wedding present. A print of over-scaled tulips is a reproduction of a detail in a painting by the 19th-century botanical artist Robert John Thornton, whose use of colour and form has always captivated Ottoline’s imagination. She drew on one of Dutch art history’s most famous movements to design the hall. The graphic pattern of the wallpaper was inspired by the minimalist De Stijl group, whose most renowned member was the artist Mondrian. The living room blazes with pop art neons in homage to Andy Warhol and a wallpaper inspired by Diaghilev’s
‘We were always told if you want something, make it yourself, do something unique’ costumes for the Ballets Russes, while Japanese woodblock prints from the 19th century were the catalyst for her Spot and Arrow wallpaper in the bedroom. In the kitchen, where bright pottery and a vintage cabinet offset understated joinery, Ottoline’s stylised map of The Hague, printed on fabric, one of her early works, brings character. ‘I’d uploaded a hand-drawn sketch online to have it printed,’ she explains. ‘Just out of curiosity. And I was amazed by the result.’ Upstairs, the bright cabinet reinvented with a Paisley-printed paper was another junk-shop find. It reminds Ottoline of another family motto: ‘We were always told, if you want something, make it yourself, do something unique. estled behind a row of pretty Georgian houses in London’s New Cross is Kai Price’s charming flat. When he and his fiancé Joe first viewed the property, its hidden location was one of its main draws. ‘It had lots of lovely features too,’ says Kai. ‘The previous owners had stripped back the floors, and the windows let in lots of light, but we could also see that there was the potential to put our own mark on it.’ Kai and Joe moved into the flat in February 2020, right before the world was plunged into lockdown. While restrictions slowed down the renovation process for most of the country, it actually accelerated things for the couple. Initially, they’d been in no rush to make any major changes to the flat, having decided to live there for a year to work out what needed improving. ‘I had been planning on just doing a quick fix, such as painting the cupboards and tiles in the bathroom, but because we were at home all day every day, we quickly saw how unusable some of it was,’ explains Kai. ‘Plus, we weren’t spending any money going out, so we decided we should save up and start getting some quotes.’ Having a combined kitchen/diner was important to the couple and as the existing layout was wholly impractical, they decided to tackle that first. ‘We couldn’t both be in the kitchen at the same time; if one of us was sitting down in there, there was no room for the other to access the dishwasher, fridge or the oven,’ says Kai. decided to go with a Sebastian Cox kitchen by Devol, agreeing its streamlined, clean look was the perfect fit for the small space. Keen not to change anything just for the sake of it, the couple allowed the transformation of the rest of the flat to develop organically. The other major job after the kitchen was the bathroom, which they tackled a year after moving in. ‘It was liveable and we could deal with it as it was,’ says Kai, ‘but by the time we renovated it, it was on its last legs.’ The room was gutted, leading to the discovery that the joists were rotten and there was every chance the floor could have collapsed beneath them. The flat had been sold as two-bedroomed, and the initial plan was to use the smaller one as a guest bedroom, but it was again lockdown that forced the couple to reconsider. ‘We hadn’t thought about incorporating a home office before then,’ explains Kai. ‘If Joe ever worked from home, he would do it from the sofa or dining table.’ Knowing that this was a space they wouldn’t spend a lot of time in, they chose a bold wall colour to enhance its cosy feel, while a vintage desk and chair have been teamed with a sofa bed to create the perfect balance between office and guest room. For Kai and Joe, the feel of the flat was one of the most important things. ‘I wanted it to be a calm, relaxing space to be in,’ says Kai. As a result, a neutral colour palette flows harmoniously through each room, with subtle hints of mustard and pink. Different textures are also woven throughout to bring in a natural element. ‘I tend to gravitate towards wood, linen and ceramics,’ explains Kai. ‘My aunt was a ceramicist, so I grew up surrounded by lots of handmade things which, for me, is part of what makes somewhere feel like home.’ The couple’s approach has resulted in a space that is completely in tune with their lifestyle and, since the end of lockdown, has been used to its full potential with guests coming and going while they can still comfortably work from home. ‘Rather than tearing things out that were good enough as they were, we’ve been able to create a space that works perfectly for us,’ says Kai. ‘I think our next job is to tackle the garden!’

KITCHEN/ LIVING ROOM When the two rooms were knocked through, Lisa left the exposed steel ceiling beam uncovered
L
isa Jackson has been passionate about interiors ever since she was a child and has brought that passion to her 1930s semi in Fulwell, Sunderland. ‘When I was little, I’d save my pocket money to go to Habitat, and I loved rearranging my bedroom,’ says Lisa. ‘As my dad was a joiner, I was always asking him to make me things.’ An early adopter of the industrial vintage look years before the trend caught on, Lisa has always had her finger on the pulse. ‘I used to move every year as I enjoyed doing up houses,’ she says. ‘Every single one has had a different style – I once lived in a new-build filled with Ikea furniture – but I’m not predictable. If I like something, I like it, regardless of what era it’s from.’ Moving to her latest home coincided with opening an interiors store, which has since launched online, selling everything from metal signs and old milk churns to display cabinets and school chairs. ‘I wanted some stability for my son Reece when I opened the shop, and it’s handy for his school as well as friends and family,’ says Lisa. ‘Plus, it’s just a five-minute walk from the beach.’ It took a lot of hard work to transform the unmodernised house into a stylish family home. ‘The decor was very chintzy, with red dado rails and Anaglypta wallpaper that was hanging off,’ remembers Lisa. ‘It didn’t worry me though, as I could see the potential and liked the location.’ After replacing the flooring and redecorating to make the house liveable, Lisa tackled the meatier jobs, including knocking through the living room and kitchen/diner. ‘I prefer open-plan as it’s a lighter space and I can be setting the table while chatting to Reece on the sofa,’ she says. Redesigning the kitchen was a challenge. ‘It took a long time to plan as knocking through meant I didn’t have many walls left,’ explains Lisa. Rather than having the sink under the window as before, she decided to make her own kitchen from vintage furniture with everything across one wall. ‘The top half comes from an old butler’s cupboard, which was split into two, and I got the worktop for free from an army barracks. Then

I spotted some haberdashery counters with original handles on eBay that were the perfect fit for the bottom cupboards and everything fell into place.’ Lisa’s so pleased with the finished result she’d never consider buying a new kitchen again. Upstairs, Lisa has changed her main bedroom several times since moving in. Having started with a huge Rococo bed, she switched to an industrial design made from scaffolding poles, and more recently to a super king size Italian-style bed. ‘I saw it on eBay and couldn’t resist, plus it came with a wardrobe and chest of drawers,’ she says. ‘The walls were white for a long time but, as green is my favourite colour, I just had to try Farrow & Ball’s Studio Green when it came out.’ Lisa had been desperate to change Reece’s bedroom for years, so when he broke his leg and was stuck on the sofa for months, she took the opportunity to gut the space. ‘He didn’t have any input, but luckily he absolutely loved it,’ she says. ‘He used to be embarrassed when his friends came round but now he thinks the house is cool.’ The last room to be revamped was the cramped ground floor bathroom: ‘It was so bad – it had dated tiles and a broken bath panel,’ explains Lisa. She opted for a walk-in shower with a black Crittall-style screen. ‘I did consider moving the bathroom upstairs, but that would have meant losing a first floor bedroom and the plumbing would’ve been costly and complicated,’ she adds. Lisa has a particular passion for American vintage items, such as tin ceiling tiles and industrial fans, which she imports from Tramps UK. She also loves the big Newark and Lincoln Antiques Fairs, and the car boot fair at York racecourse, but is happy to add in new pieces from shops such as TK Maxx and La Redoute. ‘I think you can mix old and new, as long as you get the equation right,’ she says. ath is renowned for its majestic sweeping Georgian terraces, but only a short distance away, the quieter tree-lined residential streets are home to a variety of other architectural styles. It’s here that interior designer Lucy Collins found her castellated coach house, built from honey-coloured stone in 1800, complete with glorious Gothic details. After initially renting it out to students, two years ago she decided to renovate the property and move in herself. ‘I always liked it,’ she says. ‘It was scruffy and poky and had lots of doors and walls, but it’s south facing so has lovely light and I knew I could live here.’ The first thing she did was open up the downstairs into one large space, which involved knocking through the galley kitchen, WC, entrance lobby and living room. Now, the kitchen at one end of the house is bigger and opens onto a living room at the other end. ‘Too much precious space was taken up with walls and I wanted to look through to the living room from my kitchen,’ explains Lucy. In keeping with the building’s Gothic style, Lucy reinstated a fireplace in the sitting room into which she installed a woodburning stove. ‘When we rented it out there was just a little hole there,’ she says. ‘I knew there was a chimney behind, so enlarging the hole and installing a fireplace was a straightforward job.’ She commissioned a fire surround made from local Bath stone that mirrors the arched shape of the carved stone above the front door. It’s one of the many features that gives the building its distinctive look reminiscent of Strawberry Hill – the ‘Gothic castle’ created by Horace Walpole in Twickenham in Surrey, which revived the architectural style in the late-Georgian era. ‘Gothic interiors are quite ornate, so this is just a nod,’ says Lucy. Elsewhere, the design elements are less intricate and more pared back. In the kitchen, she replaced tired units with bespoke Devol painted cabinets. ‘The simplicity suits this space and doesn’t overpower it,’ she says. touches, such as a concrete worktop. ‘Originally I wanted to use natural stone, but I couldn’t find anything in the perfect colour,’ she adds. ‘Then I saw the concrete in an Urban Outfitters shop and thought it the ideal alternative.’ Gothic styling may be associated with dark, ornate interiors, but in this coach house Lucy has cleverly created a light, calm space within its castellated walls. This is a home largely decorated in off-whites and soft greys. ‘These colours suit the UK more, but I do enjoy playing with colour, too,’ she says. ‘A friend visited the other day with a geum for my garden and the orange is such a bright splash in my otherwise green and white space that I’m going to introduce it inside too.’ Upstairs, Lucy has papered one wall in each of the two bedrooms with a delicate patterned design. When she went to Farrow & Ball to buy paint, she spotted a wallpaper with a bee design and decided it would be ideal for the bedroom where her two young granddaughters sleep when they visit. It also inspired her to paper a wall in her own bedroom to balance the top floor. ‘I think it adds a grown-up feel,’ she says. Pretty painted furniture and mirrors in soft greys and creams also lend the bedrooms and bathrooms a feminine and sophisticated style. Lucy was born in Nairobi where her father was head of education for Kenya. ‘I remember always being surrounded by lots of beautiful things in our home,’ she says. She also remembers her mother telling her that she wished she would do her homework instead of tidying her room all the time: ‘I’m still the same. W
hen people see this house, they usually have the same reaction – they all say, “Oh, I could live here…”’ says Christopher Howe, the designer who conjured this magical little hideaway in Gloucestershire for clients who are also his friends. He admits that he, too, can’t help falling under its spell when he sometimes comes to stay. ‘I love escaping here because it immediately feels incredibly calm,’ he adds. In part, this is down to the house’s idyllic location, in the middle of a meadow with views down to a winding river. But that sense of rootedness also comes from the way that furniture, fabrics and finds inside the house have been assembled. It’s as if everything has been here for ever, an accumulation of family hand-me-downs and rustic make-do materials. And that’s just the effect Christopher wanted. But the story of how it all came together is as much about artistry as authenticity. The building was originally a sheep barn and had stood unused for years. In just under nine weeks, Christopher turned it into an enchanting bolthole for the owners, who were waiting for work to start on their home near London. Reclaimed timbers and slabs of stone were brought in and honed and hammered into the irregular corners to set the scene. But it’s the objects that fill the spaces – collected over the years by Christopher – that are the real secret behind how this lived-in style was created within a few short weeks. As the renowned antiques dealer, decorator and furniture designer behind the London shop Howe, Christopher habitually sets aside interesting objects he finds on his travels. ‘It’s a way of life, a habit I’ll never kick now,’ he says. When this project came up, it was as if the moment had come for his varied hoard to be dusted down and worked into a scenario that was shaped by his own imagination. ‘The aim was for this home to look as if it had been put together from items begged or borrowed from the big house nearby,’ he explains. an estate worker or a less-favoured relative might come by, from a glittering Murano light to a well-worn Windsor chair. The square footage of the old sheep shed is modest, but the folding doors that Christopher added to the front create a flow. ‘When you arrive, it opens up like a doll’s house – you can see all the spaces at once,’ he says. Two bedrooms and a bathroom are tucked into hayloft-like mezzanine levels and the living room and kitchen are divided by a surprisingly broad central staircase. The layout feels intimate, so that treasures – such as the painted Norwegian dresser in the kitchen – can be just-glimpsed from different vantage points. Christopher chose joiners, stonemasons and builders who are adept at practising traditional methods. ‘Thick stone flags were laid as steps and old wall-boards salvaged from a barn were used to clad the walls,’ he says. It was important to him that authentic raw materials were used throughout. ‘Genuine wall-boards are thinner than floorboards with fewer holes, while the slab of York stone below the stove is a good four inches thick,’ he explains. ‘Everything has been done properly with the right materials – because deep down you can tell the difference between fake and real. A thin ceramic tile doesn’t compare to a hefty

It lacks the presence.’ Proper materials called for proper skills and Christopher loves that the steps down to the kitchen have been put together in a similar way to dry-stone walling. ‘You can see where the stonemason selected just the right size and shape of stone and put it together like a jigsaw puzzle,’ he says. As for the 28-foot-long oak boards that run the width of the house, Christopher encouraged the builders to walk over them with muddy boots and trundle their wheelbarrows in and out. ‘Everything here has to be genuine,’ he says. Features such as the wrought-iron balcony took a little longer to create. ‘It was a good year before I found a blacksmith who had the ease and confidence I was looking for. He had huge hands, but created work of incredible finesse.’ A finial that sits on the staircase’s newel was a perfect finishing touch. ‘I had an image of what was needed in my mind for a while,’ Christopher remembers. ‘Then I was in a reclamation yard in Portland, Oregon, saw this one and thought, “Hmm, that looks about right.” When I got back, I put it on the top and it was a bang-on perfect fit.’ Once the sun goes down, this home feels even more special. ‘At night, you’re surrounded by black sky and stars,’ says Christopher. ‘You can turn off the lights and stargaze. id you know exactly what you wanted? Yes, our priority was to open up the space and make it brighter by knocking out the doorway between the kitchen and dining room. We wanted it to be modern but in a style that would nod to the period of the property and tie in with the rest of the house. We love the Shaker look and had seen a dark green Howdens design we thought would be perfect as we have feature walls in the same colour in the living and dining rooms. Bringing in elements of gold was important too, to warm up the space and tie in with other gold details around the house.
‘The kitchen hadn’t been updated since the 1970s – it was cramped and dark and the cabinets were falling apart. Patterned tiles went up to the ceiling and the worktops never felt clean. We were desperate to redo it.’ 112 housebeautiful.com/uk
How did you get started? We got quotes from a few builders as we wanted someone to manage the entire job, from knocking WKURXJK WKH GRRUZD\ DQG ĠWWLQJ WKH NLWFKHQ WR SXWWLQJ LQ QHZ OLJKWLQJ DQG ġRRULQJ DQG UHGRLQJ our pantry cupboard. We looked for inspiration on Pinterest and Instagram and in magazines to get DQ LGHD RI ZKDW ġRRULQJ DQG ZRUNWRSV ZRXOG VXLW the green cabinets. Before the work started, we had the windows replaced with double glazing.
Were there any particular challenges? Due to budget restrictions and planning regulations, we weren’t able to make the kitchen and dining room completely open plan as we originally wanted, so we settled for a double-width doorway instead. In order to maximise the cupboard space, we had to move the fridge into the dining room. And we QHHGHG QHZ ZLULQJ DQG D QHZ FLUFXLW ERDUG ĠWWHG which hadn’t been in our plan. What were your non-negotiables? A dishwasher was crucial. We also wanted to make more of a feature of our pantry cupboard, replacing the solid door with a half-glazed one and rebuilding the internal shelves. Open shelving was a must too, to display some of our many cookbooks as well as plants and canisters. Your favourite element of the makeover? I love how the space seems so much bigger, brighter and cleaner. We were limited by the size of the garden, but used a website called HomeByMe to come up with the design, which includes a practical arrangement of long desks down both sides of the room, plus one in the middle.

It took me eight days to create my very own Sistine Chapel, but I’m delighted with it – it really has brought the room to life.
$Q\ PXVW KDYHV" Yes – a spacious walk-in shower area with a glass screen to make the room feel bigger and brighter. Another priority was new windows that would be PRUH ĠWWLQJ WR WKH KHULWDJH RI WKH EXLOGLQJ bSOXV plenty of storage – there was none before and we were keen to incorporate more.

our home – or maybe just some of your rooms – might be small, but there are plenty of clever options that will enable you to make the best of the limited space. Consider the bigger picture and be open to a new way of compact living. Here’s how…
A sliding door is a neat, space-saving idea to divide a kitchen from a pantry or utility room
RETHINK THE LAYOUT Before embarking on any changes, think about how you use the space. List the positives and negatives, and write down your priorities for reworking the area. Instead of focusing on specific furniture or named rooms, consider the activities you and your family like to do, and how best they can be served. This will help you – and any professionals you involve – to envisage a solution that’s tailor-made to suit you. For example, there’s no advantage in filling a cramped kitchen with more units and extensive worktops if you rarely cook.
MULTIFUNCTIONAL LIVING Multipurpose spaces are big news, but the latest design solutions focus on ‘broken-plan’, rather than open-plan. ‘It’s less about one big area and more about the clever use of it,’ says Jonathan Woodcock from architectural design and construction firm Qualitas. ‘By using different floor finishes, changes in level, and semi-permanent partitions such as bookcases, distinct zones for cooking, studying and relaxing are created. The key is to have more flexible space that can evolve and change.’ Knocking two rooms into one to combine a kitchen and living room instantly adds light and a feeling of expansiveness. If the wall is loadbearing, the opening must be supported by a steel joist (RSJ), so take advice from a surveyor, architect or structural engineer. Partition walls can be removed or repositioned without the support of an RSJ. When moving the staircase for an open-plan arrangement or creating a double-height or mezzanine space, the layout and overall feeling of spaciousness will be improved but homes need quiet areas too, so do consider doors to close off a section. Shelving units can be used as a room partition as well as providing much-needed storage
CREATING NEW SPACE Extending either outwards or upwards can provide a cost-effective alternative to moving house. Many small Victorian terraced homes have a strip of dead space outside at the back that could be filled by an extension. A loft conversion can add not only a bedroom, but often a shower room too. Basement conversions aren’t to be undertaken lightly though; there’s a lot to consider regarding the costings and feasibility. The work that will be required will include excavating, underpinning existing foundations with concrete, ‘tanking’ or waterproofing the walls and new drainage.
GET ORGANISED Built-in storage solutions are best planned at the early stage of any revamp. ‘Make a diagram of each room in turn, noting every “dead” area that could be used for possible storage,’ advises Simon Tcherniak from bespoke furniture company Neville Johnson. ‘Be creative when considering whether the best use is being made of the existing space – too often we choose shelving units and freestanding furniture that fulfil our immediate storage needs but do nothing to enhance the appeal of the room.’ By first deciding whether fitted wardrobes or cupboards are right for you, how much room they’ll take up and selecting finishes, choosing freestanding pieces becomes easier.
PERSONALISE YOUR HOME If your kitchen produces a constant stream of cakes and bakes, adding a pantry and a dedicated place for bakeware may be a worthwhile investment. ‘Most kitchens have nooks and crannies that can be utilised for additional storage,’ says John Stephens from bespoke kitchen and furniture company Rencraft. ‘These small details make all the difference and use otherwise dead space. They’re also the little things that can turn an ordinary kitchen into something completely unique, with a real personal touch.’ House Beautiful MAY 2022 123
AWKWARD AREAS Redundant spaces, such as beneath the stairs, an unused airing cupboard or an alcove are crying out for a custom solution. Built-in shelving and cupboards are a plus, but areas can also be used more creatively, for instance by adding a built-in bench or a home-office nook. These small spaces need to look good too, and freestanding furniture can help make their purpose clear. An armchair in an alcove will work better if grouped with a tiny side table and lamp, creating a focal point and a cosy spot to read. Boxing in under the stairs with a bespoke wardrobe is a great way to avoid the hallway becoming a dumping ground. ‘Create sufficient hanging space to prevent coats and shoes cluttering up the entrance area,’ says Barbara Genda of Barbara Genda Bespoke Furniture. ‘The stairs are usually deeper than the wardrobe needs to be, so we often build storage shelves behind the front hanging space.’

DECORATING TRICKS Whatever your favourite look, it can be adapted to suit a small space. The latest designs, such as shimmering wallpapers, fresh paint shades and tempting fabric textures lend themselves beautifully to smaller homes – the key is to restrict the number of patterns and colours. Hone your moodboard down to your absolute must-haves, and think about the proportions you’ll use them in. If you want to use a bright colour as a starting point, keep accessories and one wall bright and white to avoid the scheme overpowering the room.
SPACE-SAVVY FURNITURE It only takes the click of a mouse or a trip along the high street to source functional yet design-led fittings in bijou sizes tailored to suit tiny rooms. Don’t fill every space with large storage furniture; pare down belongings instead, then look for furniture that will slot in neatly – make every piece earn its keep. Choose a planting style – cottage, jungle, edible, wildlife, minimalist – then write a wish list of plants appropriate to your garden conditions. Edit using the criteria below and stick to your shortlist for maximum impact.
PICK THE RIGHT PLANT FOR THE RIGHT PLACE This tiny garden has been designed on the diagonal to make it look wider. A gravel path leads across it to a semi-circular oak bench that has been tucked into the tight corner, with tall plants shielding it from the rest of the garden and offering shade.
Get to know your garden. Observe how the sun moves around the space over the course of a day to identify its sunniest spots and shadiest corners. Dig a core of earth from the border to assess the soil and select suitable plants. Research what height plants will reach and how much care they will need.
Make sure your garden has something to offer in every season by using evergreens and plants that will have impact all year. And winter needn’t be all bare branches – opt for Christmas rose (Helleborus x hybridus ‘Blue Metallic Lady’) or winter-scented sweet box (Sarcococca hookeriana var. dig yna) close to the house, leaving the beds further away for summer displays.
PLAY WITH YOUR LAYOUT Dig plant beds across the garden rather than as a strip around the boundary and you’ll see more of your plants from the house. Rotate them to 45 degrees to create the illusion of space and add dynamic pockets in corners for larger plant specimens.
BE CLEVER WITH COLOUR Make the garden seem bigger by planting brighter blooms closer to the house, and more muted, pastel tones further away.

Start with a purchased plant or a cutting and plant in a 30cm pot. Grow it in full sun or partial afternoon shade, making sure to water well throughout the summer DQG IHHG HYHU\ WZR ZHHNV 7R KDUYHVW FXW MXVW DERYH D SDLU RI OHDYHV &XWWLQJ SUHYHQWV WKH plant from becoming ‘leggy’; it grows better with regular pruning and remains a compact shape in the SRW &XW EDFN WR KDOI its size in the autumn. Keep the pot in a sheltered place in winter; some protection may be needed as it is a tender plant, so doesn’t deal well with freezing temperatures.
CAN SMALL GARDENS BE LUXE? YES. HERE’S HOW…
W
ant to add some glamour to your garden for the summer? No matter how small your space, it couldn’t be easier. If a cultivated, formal container style is your thing, choose simple topiary and classic container flowers. The form and shape will be neat and easy to maintain, giving a streamlined, luxe look. Keep any evergreen structural plants on their own in single pots. Mix and match other plants for a long-lasting spring/summer pot display. Restrict the colour scheme – just two or three complementary shades – to up the style stakes. White, purple, pink and blue all stand out and work well together. I started my container garden collection with these
plants which, while not perhaps the most adventurous, still pack a punch: laurel, lavender, rosemary, yew, ilex, Mexican orange blossom, geraniums and hydrangeas. When composing container displays, think about ‘thriller, filler and spiller’ – choose a focal plant and complement it with upright plants at the back, plus some that fill in the middle and others that will trail over the sides. Decorate one wall with dark green tiles or paint the bottom half of a fence in dark green or grey – it will help plants to really stand out and change the reflective light.
