From the Editor

Welcome facebook.com/GoodHomes

@goodhomesmag

@GoodHomesMag

My home always feels so bare once I’ve taken down the Christmas tree and festive decorations around the house; I’m always tempted to keep the stair garland up for a few more months, but my husband is never as keen! At the start of a new year I put together a wish list of what I’d like decorated/updated/ refreshed in each room, ranging from small changes such as the Karen colour of my cushions, to larger-scale decorating projects, a new sofa or changing my stair runner. Some of these simply move on to next year’s list until I have the budget or time – or I’ve moved onto another project that I forgot to add to the original list! So my advice is not to rush, and to take your time with making decisions, as putting together mood boards is the fun part – as is sourcing exact matches at high-street prices. This month’s decorating pages and real homes are packed with seasonal inspiration and clever ideas to kick-start your 2022 House Project List. Happy shopping!

T

ell us a little about your background. I studied fashion at college, and I’ve always been interested in design and interiors, especially when it comes to colour and pattern. I love using unusual colour combinations in both my wardrobe and room schemes. What have you been up to since appearing on the BBC’s Interior Design Masters? It’s been a whirlwind; the day after the final aired I handed my notice in after 18 years working in the NHS. I’ve been writing an interiors book, designing my first-ever homeware collection for Freemans, plus styling for private and commercial clients. Every day is so different and everything I do involves creativity, which makes me incredibly happy! How did your collaboration with Freemans start? After the series ended I received a phone call, and instantly knew it would be the perfect fit. Freemans is an amazing team to work with, and designing and developing the collections has been a dream come true. My summer range launches in April and includes a beautiful pink bar cart, fabulous lighting and the most OTT bedlinen, which I think will cause a bit of a stir! Where do you get your inspiration? Interiors magazines and social media are a huge source for me, as well as the places I visit on my travels – the riads of Marrakesh, street markets in Thailand, and my favourite place in the world, The Beverly Hills Hotel. Shop Siobhan’s cushions now at freemans.com and follow her on Insta @interiorcurve

With her full homeware range launching in April, Siobhan’s cushions are priced from £15 each

rmed with determination, practical skills and a great deal of ingenuity, Kati Scalet and her partner George were hunting for the perfect ‘fixer-upper’ when they came across a typically Cornish stone-and-slate cottage. It was dark, damp and dated, but the floor plan suited them, and the location was fabulous. ‘To us it was the perfect project,’ recalls Kati. ‘As well as the main property, it had an outhouse utility room, summer house, garage and garden. It’s surrounded by other historic buildings, and everything you need is within walking distance – village shops, a pub, beautiful woodland and the beach.’ Moving in during February 2016, the couple initially lived on the first floor while they gutted downstairs in order to damp-proof, insulate and re-plaster it. practical experience was invaluable. ‘He did everything apart from the electrics and downstairs plumbing, and handmade all the joinery,’ explains Kati. ‘My job, once I’d sketched the plans, was as labourer and decorator.’ Having removed the dark-wood cladding that covered much of the interior, the couple took down some later-added internal walls to create an open-plan living/dining room across the front of the house, opening the kitchen out to the back-door entrance. Next, they took out the old kitchen and replaced it on the other side of the room, choosing Shakerstyle cabinetry, white metro tiles and a wooden worktop, utilising the previously blocked-up window as part of a new dining nook. In the living room, an old-fashioned slate wall feature with an electric fire was found to be concealing a beautiful wide fireplace, so after

rebuilding and stabilising the chimney breast, Kati and George were able to install a log burner. A complete rewire followed, and eventually they began work on the first floor of the house – where they built in storage cupboards and shelves on the landing and made the happy discovery of original floorboards underneath the old brown carpet. ‘The floorboards in the main bedroom were in great condition, so all we did was sand them down slightly, leaving any glue marks and imperfections,’ says Kati. ‘The rest of the upstairs boards weren’t as good, so we gave them just a thin coat of paint, with the intention of them becoming scratched and worn, to make sure they didn’t contrast with the bare floorboards too much.’ As the renovation continued, Kati made the decision to go freelance, and as her business – Scalet Paperie + Design – began to take off, it prompted the couple to turn the third bedroom into a home office, complete with a wallto-wall desk, overhead pendants and simple shelving. Having chipped off the concrete render from the façade – which had caused ongoing damp problems – and renovated their garden and outbuildings, the bathroom was last to be tackled. To make the most of the small space, the couple knocked through into the adjacent boiler cupboard and built a concrete sink, hunted down an affordable compact bath and finished the room with wall panelling and Victorian-style floor tiles. The renovation project took around two years to complete, including a few setbacks that had to be addressed along the way, including a leaking roof. There was also an issue with their first-floor radiators that had not been installed properly, resulting in water dripping all the way downstairs, just as the final coat of paint had been applied. ‘Luckily the problems we faced weren’t too huge,’ says Kati. ‘Doing a lot of planning and research beforehand really helped it run smoothly.’ Another important lesson that the couple learnt was to use goodquality materials. ‘As we were on a tight budget, we tried to use basic 46 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY 2022

In winter we absolutely love the low sun streaming into the front of the house, and on a rainy day there’s nothing cosier then sitting by the log burner with a good book.’ The cottage is now calm, clean-lined and coordinated, yet full of character. ‘We do feel a big sense of achievement,’ says Kati. ‘We are really enjoying being here for now, but we are definitely planning on continuing our renovation journey, and hopefully getting the opportunity to restore another property at some point soon.’ 50 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY 2022

pending their working life designing and fabricating wow-factor retail installations, Gemma Ruse and her husband Xavier decided to adopt a similar approach when it came to the renovation of their own home. ‘We wanted to evoke the same kind of emotions, but in a quieter way, using honest materials and design details,’ says Gemma. The couple had been living in a two-bedroom flat in nearby Hackney for ten years when they began their search for a house suitable for starting a family. Initially, they discounted this four-storey Victorian terrace due to its poor state. ‘The property was a mess, with a dodgy extension and loft conversion, Artex ceilings and layers of carpet,’ recalls Gemma. ‘It was more of a project than we had wanted, and our first thought was, “no way – we can’t take this on”.’ However, after viewing six similar houses in the area that were already renovated, Gemma and Xavier had a change of heart. and they began to see the potential in the generously proportioned rooms. ‘It was useful to see how other people had modernised their homes, and we picked up tips and tricks along the way,’ says Gemma. ‘In one house they’d created a vaulted ceiling in their bedroom, and we decided to do the same in our bathroom. Some of the houses, like ours, also had a rear reception room with an original balcony overlooking the garden. We thought this made an interesting feature – even more so as now ours overlooks our Japanese courtyard.’ The courtyard is located in the former side return, which sits between the original house and the new part – an L-shaped rear and side extension designed by architects Lizzie Webster and Joe Fraher of Fraher & Findlay. ‘We wanted a contemporary

Meet the owners Leanne Baud, who works for the ambulance service, lives here with husband Ash, a gas engineer, their daughters Esmé, 3 and Ada, 1, and Leanne’s sons from a previous marriage, Oliver, 16, and Mason, 14 House details A four-bedroom 1930s semi LQ +XGGHUVƓHOG <RUNVKLUH When they bought it 2016

aving moved house five times in the last ten years, Leanne Baud is a self-confessed ‘serial renovator’. This 1930s property, however, is a departure from her usual taste for period houses, and the move came about after her husband Ash encountered some practical problems while they were living in Leanne’s previous two-bedroom cottage. ‘Ash is 6ft 3, so struggled with the low beams, plus we also needed space to store all of his bikes!’ explains Leanne. ‘When we first viewed the house I was unsure about the bland rooms and lack of original features, but then we began to see the upsides. Although every room was crammed with furniture, there was lots of space as the property had already been extended to the side and back, and had a double garage.’

Sun room Double doors open onto the outdoor terrace from this previously extended space, where Leanne has made her own updates, including reviving a tan leather chair her friend was throwing out, and painting the brown uPVC window frames in anthracite grey to tone in with the new scheme Corner feature Neutral accessories like the stag head wall hanging and macramé plant hanger add a rustic accent, while Leanne made the shelf from a scaffolding board and brackets from B&Q

Initially Leanne planned for them to live in the house before doing any decorating to get a feel for the rooms. But soon after moving in, she got the itch to get going on the living room, and opened-up the fireplace, installed a log burner and reinstated the picture rail and coving. ‘We put the period features back in the kitchen, too, and throughout the house we stripped back to brick before decorating as the plasterwork was rough,’ she says. ‘We also removed the overboarding on the ceilings and gained an extra three or four inches in height.’ The couple bought a charcoal grey sofa and armchair before they moved in, excited to go darker with their interiors for a change of pace. ‘In my previous cottage, and the barn conversion before that, the rooms lacked light so I decorated in neutrals in order to brighten them up,’ FEBRUARY 2022 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 71

I’ve used Farrow & Ball’s Cornforth White, Hague Blue and Down Pipe everywhere in different combinations says Leanne. ‘Here, I felt able to experiment with dark, dramatic colours schemes.’ She began decorating the living room cautiously at first, contrasting the dark upholstery with Farrow & Ball’s Cornforth White on the walls, before venturing into deeper tones of Hague Blue and Down Pipe as she moved through the house. ‘Cornforth White is in every room and a really versatile colour, as it can look cool and bright or warm and cosy, depending on the light,’ says Leanne. ‘Too many colours would have made the rooms

look disjointed, and I felt greys and blues are calming and sympathetic to the house. I used the three colours in different combinations and added touches of pink, gold and copper in my furnishings and accessories.’ It was in the couple’s bedroom that Leanne tried out the darker blue first. ‘I often do a 13-hour night shift, so good quality sleep is really important,’ she explains. ‘I was a bit nervous about the navy at first but it’s turned out to be very restful, and more recently I’ve been inspired to decorate the rest of the room in the same colour.’ FEBRUARY 2022 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 73

The bespoke vanity in the en suite is also painted in Hague Blue, where Leanne chose white metro shower tiles for a hint of the traditional – later repeating the look in the family bathroom and kitchen. Here, she surprised herself by choosing blue-black cabinets. ‘I’d intended on having a light kitchen and painting the walls dark, but when I happened to see a door sample on the salesman’s desk, I knew it was right straightaway,’ she says. It wasn’t all plain sailing during the renovations, however, with poor water pressure leading to the couple discovering that the pipes and boiler needed replacing.

‘We had to be quite careful with our money at times, but we’ve not sacrificed anything we’ve really wanted,’ she says. ‘It’s just meant everything took longer while we saved up.’ Leanne was also savvy by looking for bargain buys online, such as daughter Esmé’s 1930s wardrobe – a £30 Ebay find –which she painted in Farrow & Ball’s Yellowcake. ‘Upcycling secondhand pieces was a great option when I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted, and it meant we could splash out on other things,’ she says. ‘We stretched our budget by keeping an eye on the sales, too – the Crittallstyle shower screen popped up in a Black Friday deal.’

Budget buy Leanne gave her en suite a high-end look with inexpensive metro wall tiles, which have been elevated by using dark grey grouting. She spotted the GHFRUDWLYH ŴRRU tiles in Wickes for a fraction of the price of other designer patterned styles

Leanne also saved with an ex-showroom bath and basin, meaning she could justify buying the mirrored wall. She went all-out with the decoration in this space, painting the walls and ceiling in Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe. Inspired by the moody look, she used the same colour to update the sun room and made use of the leftover yellow paint from Esmé’s wardrobe to paint the piano. ‘By the time I got to this point in the project, I was

willing to give anything a go!’ she says. ‘After all, it’s only paint, and very easy to change.’ In a busy house with four children, the family needed plenty of storage, and furniture that was versatile and hardwearing, so the sofa and armchair are made with long-lasting oak frames and upholstered in a wipeable velvet fabric. Discover new talent with Blinds Direct

Announcing the return of its Student Design Challenge, Blinds Direct showcases the 2021 winning print fabric, and the theme for this year’s entrants

F

ollowing 2021’s successful ‘Who am I?’ themed competition, Blinds Direct is inviting students to explore ‘visions of the future’ for its Student Design Challenge 2022. Chosen by a panel of experts including guest judge, Good Homes editor Karen Walker, the 2021 winner was Marna Alberts of Norwich University of the Arts, whose exceptional design celebrates her South African heritage. ‘I’ve been so lucky to have been exposed to a nation of people whose creativity knows no bounds,’ says Marna. ‘In Africa, art is for everyone, not just the educated or ‘talented’, and is how we, as a multinational and multilingual nation, express ourselves.’ What Marna misses most about her homeland is the connection with nature, which inspired her design. ‘I love walking barefoot and climbing trees, so moving to a concrete jungle like London has often left me feeling deprived of Mother Nature’s touch, which has been exacerbated by Covid 19,’ she explains. ‘My design strives to re-establish not only my own connection with the natural world, but that of the consumer.’ Judge and Blinds Direct trend specialist Ana Zuravliova loved Marna’s design. ‘We’re sure she has a successful future in design ahead of her, and if this year’s entries are as bold and dynamic, we’re sure to have another excellent challenge.’ And ‘visions of the future’ offers a treasure trove of inspiration, says Ana. ‘Entrants should pick an exciting topic that considers how life will be in the future. The winning entry will be one that creatively expresses it in a way our customers will love.’ For the latest info on the 2022 Student Design Challenge, and to buy Marna’s winning design, visit blindsdirect.co.uk.

NATURAL CONNECTION Inspired by nature and Marna’s South African heritage, her winning print design Marna is available on blinds, curtains, cushions and lampshades, from £19.83 for a roller blind (right)

Mix with a knife to form a dough, then knead on a floured surface for 10 mins, or until smooth and springy. WHY DIDN’T YOU LIKE YOUR OLD KITCHEN? Looking at the before photograph tells you all you need to know – the dilapidated 1960s kitchen was really unattractive and just wasn’t big enough for our family. We had minimal countertop space and none of the appliances were integrated, so as we love cooking, a new kitchen was a must. HOW DID YOU CHANGE THE SPACE? We decided to move our dining area into the original kitchen, and extended outwards into

a side return to make room for a new kitchen. By taking down all the internal walls, we made the whole ground floor open plan. WHAT WERE YOUR MUST-HAVES? As much worksurface as possible, and a large central island for my cooking and baking. We originally planned for the island to go in the middle, but the new area is quite narrow, very long and an awkward shape to work with, so we made the island an irregular design so it fits in perfectly. island means we can overlook the living areas when cooking. And we loved the idea of having a walk-in pantry. DID YOU HAVE A BUDGET IN MIND FOR THE PROJECT? The kitchen was part of a whole-house renovation, and the total quote for the build was £120,000, which was way beyond what we could afford. In the end, François undertook most of the work himself, with the help of my brother-in-law, to save costs. In total, we spent £27,000 on the kitchen.

HOW DID THE DESIGN EVOLVE? Originally, I wanted black worktops and Shaker-style units, but François had other ideas! He based the island design on the shape of an airplane wing, so it has an ergonomic feel. The unit doors are made of Valchromat, which he nicknames the ‘Ferrari of MDF’ because it’s such high quality. WERE THERE ANY HOLD UPS? We had to fit the kitchen around François’ busy day job. All the cabinets were installed, but we lived without the doors and had

Ring in the new year with a new radiator

Battle the frosty winter nights and crank up the heating in style with BestHeating.com

W

e rely heavily on our radiators at this time of year, but rarely show our appreciation for their hard work in keeping our homes warm and toasty in winter, and throughout the year. So is it time to give yours a style makeover ready for the year ahead? BestHeating.com offers an extensive collection of timeless, contemporary and colourful radiator designs – and replacing yours can be an easier job than you may think. The first task on the to-do list is to ensure your new radiator will provide enough heat for the required room, and based on some simple details about your property, an online BTU calculator will work out the total heat requirement. When choosing a panel design and finish, the colder weather invites us to bring more warming hues into our home. So whether your style is modern and minimal or more classic and vintage-inspired, metallic finishes such as antique brass and burnt gold or earthier tones like ruby red or on-trend sage green look beautiful, whatever the season. If your new radiator is the same size as the one you're replacing, and you feel confident draining and removing the original, this could be a project you can complete yourself. However, if any pipework needs to be moved, or multiple radiators installed throughout your home, it's advisable to seek the help of a plumber to complete your new look.

MODERN AESTHETIC For a minimalist ŴDW-panel design, the Vertical Milano Aruba designer radiator costs from £144.95

riginally serving as stables for the horses that ran the Grand National nearby, this converted barn near Ormskirk has been home to Scott and his partner Chloe for three years. When the couple first viewed the property, however, they realised it needed a lot of work and vision to make it into their dream home. ‘There was a downstairs bathroom next to a small kitchen, but we knew that if we got rid of it and opened up the space, we could create something fantastic,’ recalls Scott. As an accomplished cook, Scott – who competed in MasterChef in 2018 – is heavily influenced by Japanese cuisine, and had some very specific ideas about the space. ‘I love Teppanyaki-style cooking, which is all about long benches with the chef sitting in front of the guests preparing the food,’ explains Scott. ‘It really inspired our design – I’ve always dreamed of having an amazing kitchen, and a big island was a must.” As an art director by trade, Scott had a good idea of the new kitchen’s layout and the materials he wanted to use, and sketched out a floor plan before visiting the couple’s local Wren showroom near Aintree racecourse. ‘We shared our ideas with the designer Jess, who asked what we needed from our kitchen,’ says Scott. ‘We realised that storage was a key factor, particularly

because I have a lot of cooking equipment.’ The layout, overall style and finish were discussed in detail and Jess created a 3D render for the couple to take home and consider. With natural elements like exposed beams and brickwork in the space, the couple originally opted for oak units and doors with wooden worksurfaces. But after seeing the renders, they decided to look at different colour options. ‘At one point we took it really dark, to almost black, which we thought looked really good as it drew on the Japanese influences that have always inspired us,’ says Scott. The couple chose units from Wren’s Infinity Plus Milano Ultra range in Nero Satin with gold profiles, a solid-oak downturn breakfast bar, and Xena Quartz Cement Lux worktops. When it came to appliances, Scott and Chloe already had a Neff Slide&Hide oven, which was incorporated into the design, alongside Neff induction hobs integrated into the worktop. Once the plans were finalised it was time for installation, and because there was other building work to do at the same time, Scott chose to work with an independent contractor. ‘Our builder Sean is a joiner by trade, so we asked him to install the kitchen for us,’ explains Scott. ‘The kitchen arrived exactly at the time Wren said it would, and because the units came pre-built the whole process just flowed.’ The final result is stunning, with the contrasting colours, lines and 90-degree angles creating the Asian-inspired look and feel the couple had always dreamed of. ‘We went with Wren because they were the only company we saw with the modern, premium look we were after, and we’re bowled over with the results,’ says Scott. ‘It was worth every penny.’ SLEEK AESTHETIC The integrated Neff induction hob is perfect for Scott’s favourite Teppanyaki-style cooking for guests

WHAT WAS WRONG WITH YOUR ORIGINAL BATHROOM? Our house used to be a hotel and we think our en suite was once two bathrooms. It had a bidet, a hideous beige carpet, and all the sanitaryware was pushed up against the walls, leaving a huge space in the middle. DID YOU HAVE ANY BIG IDEAS? We wanted to make better use of the space; the original bath was jammed in beside the fireplace, but the window overlooking

the garden was crying out for a roll-top tub underneath it. We had room for a walk-in shower across a whole wall, with space left for a toilet and double basins. It would have been criminal not to make use of the proportions. SO, YOU WANTED TO CREATE A LUXURIOUS LOOK? Yes, and the acres of beautiful marble-effect tiles everywhere were a good starting point, as was our decision to double-up on showers and basins. It was very important to me

I couldn’t resist splashing out on the reclaimed oak flooring, which adds a real warmth to buy period-style sanitaryware to complement the existing fireplace, which I was determined to keep. The reclaimed wooden flooring we chose looks like it’s always been there. TELL US ABOUT THE MIX OF MATERIALS IN THE SCHEME I did worry about not being able to match all the metallic finishes exactly, as I was sourcing brassware and accessories from different companies. In the end, I went for an eclectic look, positioning different metals next to each other, and it actually works really well.

HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR BUDGET WORK FOR YOU? It’s an enormous room, needing a complete reworking of the layout, but I didn’t want to compromise on the sanitaryware or the showers, so luckily, they were sale items. I went for porcelain marble-effect tiles, which are more practical and cheaper than the real thing. This was a godsend, because we needed a lot of them! I tracked down inexpensive radiators and a basic blind, and my bath mats are from Ikea, but I couldn’t resist splashing out on the reclaimed oak flooring, which adds a real warmth.

MARBLE MASTERPIECE With a matching double-basin splashback, a wall of marble-effect tiles and brushed brassware creates the wow factor in the spacious walk-in shower, which has two separate systems

WOULD YOU DO ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY? Not really, because we had time to plan everything through lockdown. We’d been inspired by a visit to Lime Wood Hotel in the New Forest and loved the style of their bathrooms. We were originally going to choose dark green herringbone tiles, but I’m so glad we went for the marble effect, as they are lighter over such a big expanse. But I plan to add swing screens at either

end of the shower area, as it’s so big and water can sometimes spray out. HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW THAT IT’S ALL FINISHED? We’re desperate to spend time in here. One of us can sit and chat while the other has a bath, or we can shower side by side rather than waiting our turn. It’s great to have a view of the garden, too. It’s hard to leave this room in the morning and get on with the day!

GLAZED-BOX ADDITION

TOTALLY TROPICAL

A stunning glass side-return extension overlooks this Caribbean-inspired rear garden in the heart of London

Feature DEBBIE JEFFERY Photography RICHARD CHIVERS Project YARD ARCHITECTS WHAT DID YOU WANT TO CHANGE ABOUT THE HOUSE? We’d been living in a much smaller property when we first discovered a crescent of unusual early Victorian houses nearby. So when one came onto the market we went to view, as we needed more space to work from home in. The compact three-storey house was extremely dark but had wonderful proportions, and we could see there was scope to improve it. There was a guest bedroom to the rear of the lower ground floor, with the kitchen at the front, so even after living there for almost two years, we had only ever been out into the back garden a couple of times as the access to it was so poor.

Q

HOW DID THE DESIGN CHANGE THE LOWER GROUND FLOOR? As I love architecture and design, I invited some London practices that I follow on Instagram to come and see the house.

Q

Yard Architects impressed us most, and worked from inspirational pictures we’d collected of modernist buildings, plants and tropical landscapes. I’m originally from the Caribbean, and was keen to create a tropical oasis, with banana trees and exotic planting, which was really the starting point. Swapping the position of the kitchen and bedroom, and building a side return extension in glass, completely opened up the back of the house. WAS THE BUILD STRAIGHTFORWARD? Aside from having planning restrictions to overcome as we live in a Conservation Area, and having to crane some extremely large pieces of glass into place over a neighbour’s garden, we were lucky to have a fantastic builder and a very thoughtful team, so every detail was organised and precise. We now spend 80 per cent of our time in the space, cooking, reading, eating and entertaining – it's a calm, sunny oasis in the centre of the city.

NEED-TO-KNOW: GARDEN LANDSCAPING DO THE GROUNDWORK FIRST

PLAN FOR PRIVACY

PLANT FOR THE SITE

If you are completing building work, it's important to start on the garden early when there is machinery on site to move earth and dig lighting cable trenches. Any hard landscaping such as steps and terraces can then be built, while more delicate planting should wait until the project's end to avoid being crushed.

Careful orientation and landscaping will ensure that a home feels more private, with hedging, walls, fencing and gates providing shelter and defining boundaries. Don’t create such a private site that you can’t enjoy the outlook, though, and leave some visual space between walls and trees through which to appreciate the broader view.

Buy a soil-testing kit to try out in different areas of your plot. Poor-quality subsoil will ideally be remedied before planting by adding topsoil and manure while ensuring adequate drainage. Repeat planting is key, as is avoiding too much variety – position darker colours to the front with larger, paler, finer-textured plants behind to create depth.
