Horizon HONOR MAGIC 2 `TBA, hihonor.com It’s about time we saw these nearly all-screen phones take a step forward into being actually all screen. The Honor Magic 2 (currently only planned for release in China, but we hold out hope) features a 6.39-inch 1080x2340 OLED screen that totally covers the front. There’s a forward-facing camera, but it’s hidden in a section of the phone’s rear that you have to physically slide up to pop it out, then slide back down when you’re done. Honor uses the extra space this provides to make it a triple-lens front camera, matching the triple-lens rear cam, so you get amazing shots in both directions. An in-screen fingerprint sensor handles security, and it’s all powered by the AI-focused Kirin 980 chip. This is the future. T3 SAYS: Please sign our petition to make Honor bring this to the India as soon as possible. The Magic 2 looks properly magic.

GOOGLE PIXEL SLATE `TBA, store.google.com Google’s take on the productivity tablet is here, and it’s pretty much a Chromebook with the keyboard removed (and then optionally added back on with a keyboard case that includes a trackpad). The Pixel Slate uses Chrome OS, with a design that makes it more suited to productivity, including split-screen apps. There’s a few other tablet-friendly adjustments, too, such as a blue-light reduction mode. The 3000x2000 12.3-inch screen is sharp and bright, and supports the Google Pixelbook Pen. It’s powered by Intel processors, though the starting variant gets you a fairly measly Celeron chip. The higher-priced model, with eighth-gen Intel Core m3 chip and 8GB of RAM, is a good balance, though you can get more powerful models (including an Intel Core i7 option with 16GB RAM). T3 SAYS: A good-size screen and options for a powerful processor make this a serious tablet contender.

Horizon OPPO R17 PRO `45,990, oppo.com/in The Oppo R series has always focussed on imaging and appearance but R17 Pro also takes aim at the battery front. It comes with Super VOOC Flash Charge fast charging to power upto 40% in just 10 minutes. This is in part due to the bi-cell design that uses two 1,850mAh batteries that fully top up in under 40 minutes. The rear triple camera setup includes a 12MP sensor with variable aperture (f/1.5-f/2.4) and 1.4micron pixel size, 20MP sensor (f/2.6) and a ToF (Time of Flight) 3D stereo lens for depth effects that can accurately map objects upto 3m infront of it. OIS, Dual Pixel PDAF and Ultra Night Mode for optimal low light shots are available. For selfies we have a 25MP camera with AI-based beautification and a live preview option. Face unlock and the in-screen fingerprint sensor keep things secure. T3 Says: Oppo R17 Pro somewhat distinguish itself from the increasingly identical looking crowd via the Emerald Green and Radiant Mist colour variants.

PHILIPS TV SERIES From `9,990, philips.co.in Philips has been dormant in the Indian television segment but that time is at an end with the introduction of 7 new models. This includes sizes starting from the entry level 22” model with FHD panel to the 65” flagship featuring Pixel Precise HD image processing engine said to deliver sharp images with high contrast. The latter top-of-the-line model (65PUT6703S/94 - pictured) has 3 sided Ambilight technology using LED backlight for well tuned ambient illumination. The Micro Dimming software analyses the picture in 6,400 different zones to adjust it accordingly and DTS HD is present for improved sound. A dedicated Ambilight music mode syncs with the currently playing audio to offer a disco-like experience while another turns it into a glorified mood setting lamp. T3 Says: By Q4 of next year, Philips plans to double its service centres across the country with a robust after sales network already in place.

Horizon PIXII `TBA, pixii.fr This rangefinder camera takes advantage of technology by cutting back on it. The principle is this: why does a digital camera need a screen or storage when your phone has those? The Pixii takes digital snaps (the size of the sensor hasn’t been revealed yet, but Pixii says it will have a high dynamic range and ISO from 100 to 6400) and beams them straight to your phone. A good old-fashioned optical viewfinder helps you frame them up in the first place, including a proper optical rangefinder. It can take Leica M lenses, and has controls for shutter speed and ISO, as well as a small OLED screen with a dial for checking and tweaking settings. It’s made of aluminium, and looks super-sleek and gorgeous. T3 SAYS: The design is beautiful, and we love that it’s both old-school and modern at the same time. Here’s hoping the photos are good!

APPLE MACBOOK AIR From `1,14,900, apple.com The MacBook Air has been a staple of offices and students ever since Steve Jobs first pulled it from an envelope onstage in 2008. It’s been massively overdue for an overhaul, and this is it: the MacBook Air now comes with latest-gen Intel processors, a high-res Retina screen, and its thinnest, lightest design yet at just 1.25kg. The dual-core processor is good for everyday tasks, and the 13-inch 2560x1600 screen looks bright and detailed. A Touch ID fingerprint sensor makes it more secure and also quicker to log into. Two Thunderbolt 3 ports double as USB-C ports, and a new full-size keyboard and bigger trackpad keep it usable despite getting smaller. Oh, and it now comes in Gold, Silver and Space Grey. T3 SAYS: Apple’s most popular laptop gets the modern update it deserves. Its portable design could open up your options for where to work.

MOON BY 1-RING $330 (approx. `23,200), 1-ring.net We can’t resist any gadget that includes the two most futuristic-sounding features in the world: AI and levitation. There are two aspects to the Moon. First is the floating camera. Not only does this keep it stable, but it can rotate 360 degrees, either from manual remote control, or it will turn to focus on noise. This makes the Moon great for security, but also for things like conference calls – it’ll turn to face whoever’s talking. Moon also acts as a smart home hub, including everything from IR control to ZigBee wireless, and plays nicely with all kinds of tech, from Philips Hue to Samsung SmartThings and Google Home-compatible gear. Also, its AI features learn your habits to pre-empt your needs. T3 SAYS: This is a pretty handy security system, and a clever and comprehensive smart home hub that also looks super cool.

This includes 4 models: FP-J30M-B, FP-J40M-W, FP-J60M-W and FP-J80M-H that come with high density active Plasmacluster technology and passive mechanical filtration. Haze mode eliminates foreign substances like Toluene, Benzene, NOx, Sox and more with no harm caused to the Ozone from this process. The interactive panel displays PM2.5 levels (FP-J60M-W, FP-J80M-H only), wattage consumed, odour and dust level with the embedded light sensors intelligently shutting down the purifiers when the room’s lights are switched off. T3 Says: 30 global labs have tested the range including the British Allergy Foundation and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) Japan.

GARMIN INSTINCT `26,990, garmin.co.in At first glance Garmin Instinct looks like yet another addition to the eclectic range from the wearable maker but that couldn’t be further from the truth. It is equipped with an inbuilt triple axis compass, barometric altimeter and wrist-based heart rate monitor. There is support for multiple global navigation satellite systems like GPS, GLONASS and Galileo that helps track the wearer’s location in challenging environments such as a blizzard where visibility is extremely poor. Adhering to US MIL-STD-810 rating, the smartwatch is thermal, shock and water resistant coming in a fiber-reinforced polymer case. The high contrast display is not only chemically-strengthened and scratch-resistant but can also be read in bright sunlight. Sports modes include climbing, cycling, rowing, running, skiing, swimming, weightlifting and yoga making it handy for those regularly participating in various activities. After pairing it with a smartphone and Garmin Connect online fitness community, automatic uploads, live tracking and GroupTrack can be enjoyed. OnePlus has always striven for utmost perfection which is reflected in their motto: Never Settle. To that end, they have collaborated with McLaren to announce the ‘OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition’ encapsulating the best of both brands in one

ONEPLUS 6T MCLAREN EDITION

A thing of beauty: Industrial Design As McLaren was the first to embrace carbon fiber, it was only appropriate to use the pattern for the back cover. At the bottom is the McLaren Badge that reacts dynamically to different lighting and angles. To complete the look, sleek lines filled with McLaren’s signature Papaya Orange colour surround the device tastefully fading away as we go up.

Fast and the furious: Warp Charge 30 Upping the ante is Warp Charge 30 that can power up 50% of the battery in a span of just 20 minutes. 30 watts of electricity flows into the device constantly without any sign of slow down or excessive heat generation. Integrated circuits present in the charger and phone combined with highly efficient power management software make this possible.

NISSAN KICKS The all-new Nissan Kicks is all set to sprint on Indian roads soon with a host of technology that will assist drivers and make the ride fun and comfortable. The intelligent SUV comes with an 8-inch infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that brings in Siri and Google Assistant for hands-free driving. It is also equipped with an Around View 360° camera that gives a complete view around the car, making parking in tight spaces a cinch. However, the most intriguing tech feature is the app support. Nissan Connect will be available for free to Kicks users for the first three years that relays data like the parked location of the car, engine, battery low indicator, 24 T3 Tomorrow’s Technology Today JANUARY 2019

geofencing and more. Furthermore, the app also tracks driving and scores the driver based on different parameters, thus allowing the driver to change their driving technique to achieve better mileage. That’s enough for tech. What about design and performance? Nissan has got you covered there with its bold design. The car features Nissan’s signature V-motion grille, floating roof rails, boomerang tail lamps, plush interior and option of going with a 1.5ltr K9K diesel engine or 1.5ltr H4K Petrol engine. Samsung’s folding Galaxy X phone is a classic slab of futuristic tech that nobody asked for

here’s one really great thing about working online – apart from getting the benefit of the wit and wisdom of the Twitter intelligensia, of course. That is, you know exactly how many people read any given story, and as a result have a very good idea of what people really like. For all I know, this page of the mag might be read by two people, both of whom hate me. But on a website such as the award-winning T3.com, you can immediately see, “Oh, five bajillion people read this story; this one… 11 people. Hmm.” As a result, I can say for a fact that tech fans are absolutely nutsoid for the Samsung Galaxy X, aka Samsung’s folding phone. If you’re not familiar with it, the Galaxy X is (or will be) a phone that seamlessly folds out into something more like a tablet. By ‘seamlessly’ I mean, ‘there isn’t a bloody great hinge down the middle like a Nintendo Game & Watch’ – the screen itself folds. Certainly, Galaxy X is an interesting idea, but that’s not the reason that ‘the internet is going crazy over this’ (as they say). It’s because it doesn’t exist. Well, not yet anyway.

fans go crazy about films – Star Wars film ms primarily – before the ey come out. Online fan theorries and plot demands run rio ot for months, and minor characters are fleshed out into plot-changin ng avatars of the fans’ feverish ima aginations. Then the actual movie debuts and everyone goes, ‘This isn’t what we imagined at all! Let’s boycott this film!’ Admittedly, a lot of these ‘fans’ are mad racists and misogynists. But not all of them. Some are normal people who just got giddy with excitement at the literally infinite possibilities offered by things that do not really exist yet, but will quite soon. Tech fans are generally less vocal than film fans (other than in the whole ‘Apple vs Android’ war, of course, but let’s not go there), but the massive number of readers for even the tiniest nugget of info

Unfold the future

on Samsung’s folding phone told us that there was huge interest in the Galaxy X. It’s interest that grew and grew as its rumoured unveiling day approached. Seriously, we almost broke the internet, there was that much traffic for Galaxy X stories. However, Samsung may now have gone and ballsed all this up. How? By actually showing the phone, at its developer conference.

T

Forthcoming tech you haven’t seen yet is always more exciting than tech that is in that more boring state called ‘actually existing’. That’s because your mind can think of all sorts of crazy features that might be in it, and you conjure up something that is personalised to you. You see the same phenomena to a much more intense degree when W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

Your mind can think of all sorts of features that might be in it, made perfectly just for you…

Firstly, it wasn’t actually called Galaxy X, which is a really cool name. In fact it wasn’t called anything, because it’s really not all that near to being finished. We do at least know that the folding screen tech used in the Phone Formerly Known as Galaxy X is called the Infinity Flex Display, so that’s at least slightly cool. What did it look like? Kind of like a phone that folded out, like a Nintendo Game & Watch. You could almost feel the internet deflating as it appeared, albeit momentarily, on stage. We all suddenly thought, ‘Oh, is that it? And anyway, what do you do with a phone that folds out into a mid-sized tablet?’ Someone on the T3 Twitter feed summed it up rather succinctly with Jeff Goldblum’s line from Jurassic Park: “They were so preoccupied with whether they could, they never stopped to think if they should.” Luckily, the reveal was over almost before it began, and there’s still plenty of time for us all to think what the hell to do with the Galaxy X before it really really exists, and makes its way onto the shelves in Carphone Warehouse. But whatever the finished product is like, it’ll never be as good as the phones in our vapourware dreams. How could it be?

COOL RUNNING

RUN SMARTER THROUGHOUT THE WINTER MONTHS Despite the cold, you can easily keep your training on a hot streak. GB ultramarathon runner Damian Hall shows you how… Yes, the temperatures are dropping outside, but that doesn’t mean your training has to head south too. If you normally run outdoors, making the change to running on a treadmill can feel weird. Entice yourself into it by making training fun with Zwift (zwift.com/ run), an at-home training platform with gaming elements. With each step on the treadmill you power your avatar across virtual courses, from jungles to a futuristic New York. Link up with friends or strangers in Zwift and run laps with them in real-time.

You’ll need a treadmill. The iFit-enabled NordicTrack C990 (nordictrack.com) treadmill uses customised, adjustable FlexSelect cushioning. It also has one-touch smart controls, an integrated heart-rate monitor and a seven-inch smart HD console. You’ll also need a running sensor, such as the Stryd (stryd.com), and your smartphone or tablet to run the Zwift Run app. Structured workouts and training plans are available to help you train smarter. By the time spring rolls around, your form, speed and power will be better than ever.

GADGET GURU

Big or small, T3’s gadget expert will never judge you

DHIRAJ MALHAR

What’s the smallest phone I can get? You kids and your good eyes and your dinky little bags and your tight jeans. You’re unappeasable. Companies are releasing massive phones that once would’ve been called tablets (GaGu doesn’t use portmanteaus, so ‘phablet’ is right out) and now you want tiny phones? What gives? So, say Guru was to do one of his classic question-jukes and dodge the way you were thinking he’d go: the smallest phone you can get is a watch. An Apple Watch or other smartwatch with a cellular connection can do calls. In a lot of cases, you still need a phone, because the contract for

the watch tends to be just a side-benefit sharing your main number, but you could leave that at home. The concept of number sharing brings Guru on to the Palm Phone ($350, US only for now, and only with the purchase of another phone on contract). It’s dead cute, around the same size as a stack of credit cards, and designed to be a companion

ABOVE Remember when people once said four-inch phones were too big?

phone to your real phone. GaGu can see the appeal, but he reckons it works as just an okay alternative to everything else. Let us get a bit more traditional. Apple has binned the iPhone SE, making it a no-go area for small-phone fans – the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 or 8 is now its littlest. Android is obviously a broader ecosystem; Unihertz’ Jelly Pro runs on Android Nougat and totes a 2.45-inch screen, although GaGu wouldn’t have it in his house, much less his pocket. The Gravitis J8, a dumb phone, is 2.5-inch nose to tip, and weighs just 19 grams. It’s a novelty, but maybe it’ll be useful?

THOM YORKE – SUSPIRIA For Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Suspiria, Thom Yorke looks beyond the garish heavy metal of the original to create a shifting and ethereal soundscape that’ll make you shiver in delight.

If GaGu had enough fingers to count how many times he’s been asked this question, he probably wouldn’t have as many horrific memories of ‘the accident’. It’s nine times. Anyway. Guru has answered this before, but not in this way: there are now cheap HDMI adapters coming out of China which do a bang-up job of piping that old-school analogue signal into your TV virtually delay-free. Guru has personally tested the GANA Wii2HDMI which outputs a near-flawless signal for HDMI from Nintendo’s waggly games machine (the code-crackers among you may have concluded this from its name), and there are examples around of the same kind of thing for the PlayStation 2 as well. If your chosen console doesn’t have its own adapter, GANA also does a composite to the HDMI converter which will do in a pinch. Now you just need to make sure you’ve got enough HDMI ports on the TV for your collection.

ABOVE Forget the mini versions of consoles; only the real thing will do for Guru

GADGET GURU’S MAGIC BOX It’s a well-known fact, but for those who are just catching up: Gadget Guru has really big hands. They’re like giant-sized spades. They can hold two basketballs each. Thus, when Guru Jr demands that his father show him up at Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch, those hands have been forced to curl into an unpleasant shape around the tiny, awkward Joy-Con controllers. Well, no more: while it was certainly the thrifty choice, GaGu is more than happy with his purchase of a Hori Switch Horipad, which is a proper USB controller that Guru Jr is absolutely not allowed to use. Perhaps the proper Nintendo Pro Controller might have been better, given that it supports rumble and motion, but is. Gagu’s streaming exploits continue – his world-class gameplay and sparkling personality have netted him a cool in viewer donations.

28 T3 Tomorrow’s Technology Today JANUARY 2019

That’s not enough to justify the purchase of an Elgato Stream Deck which is a frivolous LCDequipped keyboard that puts regular streaming functions in one-button reach, but it’s very tempting. Let’s talk keyboards some more: specifically the Wooting One. Produced in the Netherlands, it’s a truly unusual device, with each key acting as an optical analogue sensor. That’s mad, but it allows you to adjust the actuation point of the keys, and control acceleration in racing games depending on how far down you’ve pressed it. It’s one of the best keyboards Guru’s used. The clatter of keys bottoming out, the feel of consistent springs, being able to actuate the keys by poking a banana digit towards the circuit board; it’s great.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST SCENT Omar Hamwi asks the chief of perfume house Penhaligon’s for some expert advice The art of selecting the right fragrance for your personal style, an event or outfit can be tricky. In an age where you can find answers to almost anything online, how to go about selecting a scent takes a little more than just a Google search. There’s a certain intuition that comes with picking a fragrance and knowing when to wear it. This is the view of Lance Patterson, CEO of Perfumers 1870, a brand collective that manages luxury British perfume house Penhaligon’s (penhaligons.com). To find out how the experts do it, T3 asked Patterson how he goes about choosing the ideal fragrance. “Buying a fragrance is all about instinct,” he says. “You will respond automatically to something you are drawn to.” But how can you test fragrances correctly to discover their qualities, or to determine how the scent might develop once it has settled on your skin? Patterson recommends a couple of methods to get this part right as you explore. “Ensure your skin is moisturised to make it last longer. Spray at a distance – the skin should not be wet,” he explains. “Don’t rub after applying, as that can alter the fragrance as it develops on your skin.” Ultimately, Patterson recommends picking your fragrance the same way you would an outfit: “Think about how you want to feel, and what look you are going for. Think of this fragrance as the ultimate accessory, that finishing touch to an outfit, like your cufflinks.” JANUARY 2019 T3 Tomorrow’s Technology Today 33

4K camera drones

nce upon a time, camera drones fell into two camps: you had your top-end, professional drones, capable of hauling cinema-grade cameras skyward and capturing footage that was once only possible with a helicopter; and smaller consumer drones, fun for flying indoors as well as out, and with enough tech to snap a few shareable videos and pics. Now there’s a new breed of drone that packs all the formidable technology, confidence-inspiring safety features and

O

camera firepower of professional drones into portable powerhouses, while still promising all the ‘throw and go’ fun of compact drones. With these drones it takes just minutes to unpack, get airborne and start shooting in stabilised 4K. Drone technology moves fast. Each drone here comes loaded with a 4K camera mounted to a gimbal, and folds down alongside its controller for stowing in a bag or suitcase. All three sync with a companion app, the nerve centre for tweaking settings, and for initiating take-off and landing.

When it comes to nailing dynamic shots, a variety of auto shooting modes means you can nail panoramas, fly pasts and so much more, with just a few taps of your smartphone screen – no pilot’s license needed. What’s more, face recognition and visual tracking tech make it easy to follow a person or object (in a non-creepy way, obviously). DJI has always been king of the drones, so we’re here to find out if the new 4K folders from Parrot or Yuneec have the goods to knock the Mavic Air from the sky.

DESIGN :H KDYH WKUHH DPD]LQJ ć\LQJ PDFKLQHV but which is the most dynamic? s we’ve come to expect from DJI, the Mavic Air is a real eye-catcher – all clean lines and stealthy styling. It folds down neatly into the supplied protective case, but even with propeller arms outstretched - the front arms fold out before the rear arms get into position - it measures just 168x184mm. The 4K camera is recessed in the nose and stabilised by a smooth three-axis, all-mechanical gimbal. The Mavic Air is the only drone here to include obstacle sensors: nose and tail cameras scan the environment for blockages, helping the drone outmanoeuvre them or emergency stop to prevent total obliteration. Downward Vision cameras and a 3D infrared system help with precision hovering. The space-saving controller is compact and neatly laid out. Even the joysticks can be unscrewed and stored within the controller. Parrot’s bug-like AnaďŹ is more svelte than the Mavic Air in weight and design (the AnaďŹ is 320g to the Mavic’s 430g). That said, the abundance of grey plastic makes it feel like a toy. On the underside, a vertical camera and ultrasound sensor aid positioning and hover stability, but there’s no obstacle sensing here. The 4K camera is mounted ahead of the propellers on a three-axis, digitally stabilised gimbal. This positioning means you never see the propellers creeping into view, something that can ruin decent footage. Because the camera isn’t recessed, it can

The DJI Mavic Air is an eye-catcher – all clean lines and stealthy style also be aimed 90 degrees upwards for more angle options. The AnaďŹ â€™s controller design is vanilla, but feels at home in the hands, and controls are right where you need them for piloting. The design of the Yuneec is reminiscent of the Mavic Air. In fact, there’s not much separating the two drones in looks, size or weight. There’s no obstacle sensing, just a vertical camera and ultrasonic positioning like the Parrot AnaďŹ , and the camera is mounted to a primitive stabilising gimbal. The controller is uncluttered and small. Like the AnaďŹ , it features a ip-up central mount to keep your smartphone front and centre.

FLIGHT :KLFK GURQH GHOLYHUV WKH PRVW FRQĆGHQW ć\LQJ H[SHULHQFH" 7LPH WR ĆQG RXWð etting airborne is an extremely simple process with all three drones: charge the battery and controller, download the companion app to your smartphone (DJI Go 4, Parrot Freeflight 6, Yuneec Pilot), follow the simple on-screen instructions and you’re ready to fly. If you’re a newbie, each drone offers a beginner mode that limits speed, altitude and range. These drones also record their location at take-off, returning to that point at the touch of a button. Additionally, the Yuneec Mantis Q features voice control for initiating take-off, landing, and certain camera commands (“Record a video”). The primary function of a camera drone is to capture stable footage from the air, so the drone’s ability to remain composed in flight is vital. This is usually aided by a multi-axis, camerastabilising gimbal and positioning sensors. In comparison, the budget Yuneec Mantis Q comes up way short. Shoot at 1080p and the camera is kept fairly well-rooted via electronic image stabilisation (EIS). Boost the resolution to 4K and EIS stops, leaving footage at the mercy of the wind and the steadiness of your controller input. Disappointing. The Parrot is a different beast. Hurtle the drone skyward and, whether it’s hovering or tracking a high-speed cyclist down a hill, the

Whether the Parrot Anafi is hovering or tracking a cyclist, its poise is catlike poise is catlike, while three-axis image stabilisation works wonders to keep the camera locked on target. Movements are smooth and there’s immediacy between controller input and drone movement. The Mavic Air is just as composed in the air. Those obstacle sensors add an extra layer of insurance, while the three-axis allmechanical gimbal keeps footage steady. All three drones benefit from a Sport mode for high-speed flight. Both the Mavic Air and Mantis Q deliver whopping speeds of 44mph, with the Anafi falling behind at 33mph. Battery life is the final battleground here. The Mavic Air takes last place with 21 minutes in the air, compared with 25 for the Anafi and an impressive 33 minutes for the Yuneec.

Combined with the aerial stability and mechanical gimbal, the footage is ready for the big screen, recreating colours and textures in impressive detail. If you’re looking to get creative with a range of auto shooting modes, you’ll find a huge selection within DJI’s Go 4 app. The Mavic Air can track up to 16 subjects in Active Track mode, while Quick Shots serves up a variety of auto shot options, including Boomerang and Dronie. Setup requires just a few taps within the app, before the drone springs into action and starts filming. Smart Capture adds a dash of Jedi magic, enabling you to control the Mavic Air using hand gestures. Cinematic mode is ideal for manual flying, calming jerky controller input and ensuring your footage is buttery smooth. The Anafi’s 1/2.4-inch Sony CMOS sensor produces breathtaking footage. 21MP HDR stills are amazing, particularly in low light, and 2.8x lossless zoom gets even closer to the action. Even at full zoom, quality is bang on. There are plenty of smart flight modes to experiment with, too. Dolly Zoom harnesses the zoom facility to recreate Hitchcock’s famous

‘Vertigo’ effect. Follow Me visual tracking and other useful modes work brilliantly, but are only available through an in-app purchase. A bizarre move by Parrot, but even with this extra outlay it still works out cheaper overall than the Mavic Air. The Mantis Q’s 1/3.06-inch CMOS sensor produces rich 4K UHD footage, but it’s blighted by the lack of stability. There’s a touch more control when you bump the resolution down to 1080p. Stills are where the camera really shines. On our sunny test day we produced crisp, colourful images. The Mantis Q isn’t overly decked out with flight modes, but there’s enough choice to help newbies get to grips with photography. Visual tracking, in particular, works well.

Peak practice

I

like to think I’m a reasonably good skier for someone who only spends two weeks of the year on the slopes, but there’s plenty of GoPro footage that suggests the opposite. Over the years I’ve had quite a few lessons, but it’s an expensive business. So when I was asked if I wanted to try Carv, a digital ski trainer that gives real-time coaching turn-by-turn, I was in the loft in a flash, hauling down my ski gear. A couple of days later, I headed off to Hintertux in Austria to meet Jamie Grant, Carv’s co-creator. We arrived in darkness, so it wasn’t until the next morning that I got my first glimpse of the Hintertux glacier and it started to dawn on me that there might be quite a bit of ice. As I tried to put aside all thoughts of Bambi, Jamie introduced me to Carv (getcarv.com), my ski instructor for the day. Each unit is made up two physical parts, an insole that goes in your ski boot beneath the liner, and a tracker that clips on the back of your boot and is connected to the insole via a cable. Of course we’re not talking Odor Eaters here – the insoles each have 48 pressure sensors and nine movement sensors. It’s the trackers that house the battery and connect by Bluetooth to your iPhone (Android compatibility coming soon) to relay your skiing performance to the Carv app. Your phone also provides the GPS data so the app can

identify which lift or piste you’re on and your earbuds let you hear Carv’s advice. The setup procedure is pretty straightforward: it’s just a case of firing up the app, following the instructions and pairing the phone and trackers. Once the boots are on your feet, you need to lift each boot in turn to calibrate the pressure sensors. Then all you need to do is pop in your earbuds and set Carv running. At the top of the mountain, I clipped on my unfamiliar hire skis and tried to ignore the slick carving of the 10-year-olds cannoning out of the lift, the massive patches of ice, and Jamie’s passing mention of skiing with pros like Olympian Dave Ryding. Yes, I was under absolutely no pressure.

work on my ‘edge similarity’. The score is derived from 35 metrics that are measured on every turn to assess aspects of your skiing, such as your balance, distribution of weight, edge angle, speed and smoothness of movement. Up to the top again and this time I gave it my best shot. I had a few slips on the ice but I kept my weight forward and tried to remember everything I’d ever been told about great skiing technique.

EDGING ONWARD As I rode the gondola back up again, Carv broke the news to me that my IQ was up from 99 to 106 but I still needed to work on my edging. It was time for some coaching and I switched from ‘Free

AT THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN, I CLIPPED ON MY UNFAMILIAR HIRE SKIS AND TRIED TO IGNORE THE MASSIVE PATCHES OF ICE Thankfully, Jamie recommended that I ski badly initially so I could see how Carv picked up on poor technique. Say no more! I set off, focusing on staying on my feet over the ice and kept the deliberately bad skiing for the more powdery (less icy) sections of piste. I’d expected some coaching as I went along, but with Carv set to ‘Free Session’, I was actually being silently judged. It was only when I got to the bottom of the piste, unclipped my skis and sat down in the gondola that Carv piped up to tell me what a great job I’d done and how far I’d skied. Helpfully, it also told me what my Ski IQ score was and that I needed to

A sliding control lets you select one of 20 levels for the skill development. Feeling confident, I went for 12 but it soon became clear that it was over ambitious – or at least on the icy terrain. Each turn was greeted with a wet fart sound that let me know it was not going well, followed by advice along the lines of ‘turn your skis together’. On the ride back to the top, I reduced the level to 10 and tried again. This time the wet fart sounds were interspersed with upbeat dings. I was

365 SKIING IN HINTERTUX AT THE PENZION CHRISTINA A friendly hotel and great destination for summer or winter skiing The Hintertux Glacier is Austria’s only ski resort with groomed pistes open 365 days of the year. That means it’s a popular training ground for professional skiers and national ski teams. But it’s also a good destination for anyone wanting to get in a little outof-season practise. And in the winter, the glacier merges with the mountains of Zillertal to offer 199km of pistes accessible with one ski pass. Nestled in the valley below is the village of Hintertux and the Penzion Christina. This cosy hotel offers spectacular views of the mountains as well as a warm welcome, a comfy bed and the perfect pre-ski breakfast. christina-hintertux.at W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

I WAS MAKING PROGRESS. BY THE BOTTOM OF THE RUN, I’D MADE IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL, AND MY SPIRITS RAISED making progress. By the bottom of the run, I’d made it to the next level. My spirits raised, I headed back to the top of the same slope and gave it another go. In fact, I gave it another few goes, because each time I managed to progress to the next level until I was at 14. It was time to switch back to Free Session mode and see how my skiing had improved. My score was up to 111 – now we’re talking. I found using Carv pretty addictive, but there were times when I wanted it to give me more information. Instead of being told to keep my feet a hip’s width apart, 64 T3 Tomorrow’s Technology Today JANUARY 2019

for instance, I wanted to know if Carv thought my feet were too close or too far apart, and when I hit a lump of crud and nearly face-planted but recovered, I was waiting for some praise. I mentioned this to Jamie, and he got pretty excited because he’s planning on increasing the level of communication in the future. One of the great things about Carv is that it’s fed by machine learning. Every turn that’s made with a Carv unit creates more data that’s gathered and used to make improvements. It’s already an excellent device, but I’m pretty excited about what it could become over the coming season. W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

Apple iPhone XR and being LCD instead of OLED means you don’t get the same rich HDR depth, though the brightness is the same for both. All that said, the screen in the iPhone XR is a million miles from being bad in any way – it’s still sharp enough, it’s vibrant, and the wide-colour support is gorgeous. It also has the brilliant True Tone feature that makes it much easier on the eyes. All that said, it’s just not quite as lifelike as the XS’s screen. You can also get a higher-res OLED screen from the likes of the Huawei P20 Pro, which is now about `54,999. Oddly, Apple hasn’t included 3D Touch in the screen, meaning iOS works a little differently to all its other iPhones. It’s not a massive deal, but if you’re used to it, it’s a shame to lose it.

ast year, Apple declared that the iPhone X’s design was the future. But it was also much more expensive than previous flagship iPhones. Now, the iPhone XR brings that design at a price more people will be willing to pay, but it’s still packed with flagship-level tech from the XS. Still, starting at `76,900 instead of the `99,900 of the 5.8-inch iPhone XS means some savings had to be made by Apple. The biggest change is the screen: here, you get a 6.1-inch LCD screen (which is easier to use one-handed than the 6.5-inch screen of the iPhone XS Max) with a resolution of 828x1792. That’s nowhere near as detailed as the 1242x2688 display in the iPhone XS Max,

L

The camera is a single-lens wide-angle affair, and is one of the best in the industry right now, capturing so much light and detail. You get Portrait mode here, but it’s different to other iPhones: it only works on people by default, and it frames differently, because it uses the wide-angle lens rather than the telephoto lens of the XS. This means it takes brighter photos with more detail in Portrait mode, but if you get a close-up of someone’s face, their features get bulbous from lens distortion. It’s still an excellent camera, but we prefer the more flexible dual-camera system on the XS. Performance is best-in-class – it includes the most powerful phone chip on the planet, and is super fast. That includes the new generation of Face ID, which is impressively accurate. Even better, the XR actually has the best battery life of any iPhone, lasting about a day and a half of average use. This is no cut-back iPhone. From build to speed, it’s the real deal.

QUAD DREAMS

Four cameras, many possibilities WORDS ANKUSH MAHAJAN

amsung has upped the ante by releasing the world’s first quad camera solution in the 2018 version of Galaxy A9. The camera setup is similar to what was last seen in the A7 consisting of a 24MP primary sensor (f/1.7), 8MP 12mm (ultra-wide) lens with 120 degree Field of View (f/2.4), 5MP depth sensor with fixed focus lens (f/2.2) and a new entrant i.e. 10MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom (f/2.4). One the front rests a 24MP single lens with f/2.0 aperture. The camera app is very comprehensive and loaded with features allowing for a lot of tinkering and various modes like Panorama, Super Slow-Mo and more can be picked to best fit the situation. On paper, it’s cool to have distinct lenses for situations but in practice it turns out to be a mixed bag. Shots clicked in natural light passed muster with the main sensor but low light posed a problem notably for telephoto and wide-angle shots. The latter has a fish-eye effect that becomes prominent if the shot is not angled optimally but shape correction available after the click is taken does help straighten things. Switching to Live Focus is required to take portrait shots where the intensity can be fine tuned. For selfies, the software-based AI zealously smoothens face details even if beauty mode is toggled off. Rarely we noticed snaps were not registering when taken in quick succession. It would be helpful to make the rear lens selection marked explicitly as such instead of denoting with tree symbols. Holding the A9 exudes a rich feeling partly due to the combination of aluminium frame and glass construction. The gradient design on our Lemonade Blue unit often caught attention as the colour shift would change depending on how light hit the panel. A dedicated Bixby button relegated to the left is thankfully in an area that won’t lead to accidental presses. Reaching the squareshaped fingerprint sensor at the back wasn’t hard but the weight of the devices falls on the heavier side. The 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display is large, vivid and sharp with it displaying striking colours that almost pop out of the screen and the brightness is good enough in direct sunlight. Although wireless charging isn’t supported, fast charging via the bundled charger saves the day to power up the 3800mAh battery from zero to a hundred percent in just under two hours. The provided in-ear headset is better than expected especially with Dolby Atmos turned on. Performance doesn’t disappoint for the most part with more than sufficient RAM for multitasking but we wished

for a better chipset given how the mid-range Snapdragon 660 found here can be seen in many sub-20k smartphones nowadays. GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Honor 8C

Another competitor joins the sub-15k segment WORDS ANKUSH MAHAJAN

onor has been gunning aggressively for the Indian market share by releasing new smartphones every other month. Honor 8C is their latest effort in that direction coming in a stylish yet affordable package. Instead of opting for a glass back, polycarbonate with a gradient design is embraced. It has higher durability but is still susceptible to minor scratches so the included plastic case is welcome. However, the biggest surprise is the 4000mAh battery crammed inside such a lightweight body. It can easily last a full day of moderate usage. It takes approximately 2.5 hours to juice up from 0 per cent with the bundled 10W regular charger. EMUI, Honor’s UI running atop Android Oreo 8.1, has a separate battery tab for each app that shows detailed power analysis for those who want a full accounting. Navigation is intuitive and responsive but overstuffing with numerous apps isn’t the way to go and would be better to lose the bloatware. Making its world debut, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 SoC inside does a fine job in daily tasks without any hang-ups but there are hints of lags when resourceintensive web pages are opened in a browser. The 6.26-inch display was a letdown given its HD+ resolution that worked during the era of 5-inch devices but doesn’t play ball with larger screen sizes. By default, the colour temperature favours cooler hues more but that can be changed according to preference. To its credit, the brightness makes it legible outside and eye comfort mode is TÜV Rheinland certified to protect against blue light radiation once enabled. Right above, the notch can be hidden via a toggle that turns the surrounding area pitch black giving the impression of a bezel. The earpiece gave us no problems regarding call clarity and tucked behind it is a notification LED but there was no option to assign separate colours for different alerts. The selfie camera brightens things more than we liked evident in patches where granularity is missing. In low light, the images lack details, a problem that also carries over to the dual front camera setup. Consisting of a 13MP primary sensor (f/1.8) and 2MP (f/2.2) depth sensor, we got good results outdoors when the lighting is sufficient but on a few occasions, some clicks were too overexposed. Turned on, the AI effect makes certain images look sharper while others go way overboard and feel artificial so it is best used on a case by case basis. Portrait mode was hit or miss as the colours were muted no matter the environment and blur didn’t properly get applied to all the edges of the subject leading to unbalanced photos. Moving on, the bottom-firing mono speaker gave a lacklustre performance with a muddled audio output that could have done with some tuning. Coming to security, face unlock is quick and on an average would open up by the time we would pick up the phone to use it. Likewise, the fingerprint sensor is snappy. As a backup device we have no complaints but as a primary smartphone, the overall experience left us wanting.

MAXED UP, AGAIN

Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 The ZenFone Max Pro successor is better in every aspect

WORDS KUNAL GANGAR

sus’ renewed focus in the smartphone market has helped the company get market share and the key device that helped them achieved it was the ZenFone Max Pro M1. Now, they’ve launched its successor that goes head-to-head with Xiaomi’s latest Redmi Note phone. Companies tend to follow a similar design pattern for their successful devices. But not the new ZenFone Max Pro M2. In fact, the new device comes with a shiny plastic back that mimics 3D glass with a wave design. Despite being plastic, it looks premium. Notches are the norm these days so it’s unsurprising to see ZenFone Max Pro M2 also featuring one. The notch, however, is compact that allows Asus to integrate a slightly larger display (6.26-inches in size) with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 on top. Overall, we like the refreshing design for a device in this price range. The 19:9 FullView display supports Full HD+ resolution (2280x1080) with 94 per cent of colour gamut, 1500:1 contrast ratio and 450 nits of brightness. The display quality is decent with good viewing angle and supports a simple colour temperature adjustment slider and night light to cut out the blue light. The one thing that sets the ZenFone Max Pro M2 apart from its closest competitor is the choice of Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 660 processor. Coupled with options of 3GB, 4GB or 6GB of RAM (our unit was equipped with 4GB), the phone performs well, delivering snappy performance with the ability to handle everyday apps and games without showing any signs of a slowdown. The overall performance is also helped by the stock Android the phone runs on, which is not as vanilla as the regular Android or Android One build but it’s close enough with the stock user interface and a few pre-loaded apps. There are dual cameras at the back with a 12MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture and 5MP depth-sensing secondary camera while the front hosts a 13MP f/2.0 sensor. Photographs captured in daylight are good with satisfactory detail and colours, however, low-light SKRWRV DUH D KLW DQG PLVV 7KH IURQW IDFLQJ VHOĆHV DUH GHFHQW DQG VR are the videos that go up to 4K. The 5000mAh battery easily gives about 1.5-2 days of battery life and could take a while to top up the battery again as the phone comes with a 10W charger. On the storage side, it comes with 32GB or 64GB or can be expanded via a dedicated microSD card slot. The competition is stiff in the sub-20k segment and ZenFone Max Pro M2 is placed well within the segment with its improved design, performance and long battery life.

he Corsair HS70 SE bucks the latest RGB trend that you often find with gaming peripherals and accessories. It’s all black exterior, mesh outer grille and accent stitched headband makes it look simple yet stand out from the snazzy looking competitive devices. The headphones are durable and ergonomically designed, thanks to the metal construction and aluminium yoke, and comfortable memory foam earpads. The HS70 SE boasts on-ear volume controls as well as microUSB and detachable mic ports. We like the no-frills design but if we were to nitpick, we don’t like how the mic port cover is not attached to the headphone, making it very easy to lose. The Corsair HS70 SE is a wireless headphone but unlike regular Bluetooth headphones, it can only talk to the bundled transmitter. In short, if you are looking for a pair of cans that works with flawlessly with PC, consoles and smartphones, you’ll have to look elsewhere. However, that said, using the HS70 SE with the wireless transmitter is fast and easy as the device comes pre-synced out of the box. Insert the transmitter to a PC or a PS4 and you’re ready to go. Corsair claims a range of 40ft and while we didn’t get Corsair’s claimed range due to the interference of other wireless devices and thick walls, the HS70 SE is certainly better compared to other headsets in the same price range. In terms of audio performance, the HS70 SE works well, delivering the much-needed performance you want from a gaming headset. The audio quality from the 50mm neodymium drivers is good and certainly makes a difference when you’re playing a game like PUBG or Fortnite. There’s 7.1 surround sound support as well but it only supports on PC via Corsair’s special software that needs to be downloaded. Moreover, the software also allows to customise the EQ settings and adjust microphone input volume. During our use, we got about 14 hours of use from a single charge. The mic performance is decent with the optimised unidirectional microphone that helps to reduce ambient noise for improved voice quality.

Acoosta Uno Standalone wireless speakers with a huge built-in library WORDS KUNAL GANGAR

he success of Saregama Carvaan has proved there’s a market for a device with pre-loaded with songs. While Carvaan targets the older crowd with its library of retro songs, this new offering from Acoosta goes for everyone, right from toddlers to the elderly. The two speakers are covered with the aluminium grille on the front DQG D VPDOO GLVSOD\ LQ WKH PLGGOH 7KH WRS IHDWXUHV D EUXVKHG PHWDO ĆQLVK with physical buttons along with a jog dial to control volume and play/ pause. The back boasts ports like FM, USB, aux, mic and power. Acoosta Uno’s design has taken some design cues from Bose SoundDock. Not that we’re complaining and we certainly prefer the modern look that conforms to today’s design and styling. Acoosta Uno’s major selling point is the huge built-in song library. The library is expansive that gives access to over 14000 songs with over 1000 artists and while there’s something for everyone, in our use we found manoeuvring through the list to be cumbersome. Sure, there are playlists to choose from and the display assists a bit but the interface seems unintuitive. An app showing off the whole list and allowing it to play directly from the mobile device would have proved handy. There’s another issue with the search function that stops the current song while one tries to search for the next song. Acoosta also bundles a remote control, which is a nice addition but there are a few features that can be controlled via the remote only. For instance, VKXIćH DQG ORRS PRGHV DV ZHOO DV FRQWUROOLQJ SLWFK DUH exclusive to the remote control. That said, the audio performance on the Acoosta Uno is pretty good. The device comes with a built-in battery that gives a playback of up to 5 hours and supports reverse charging that can charge other mobile devices via USB. Other feature that makes Acoosta Uno a party favourite is support for Karaoke. Connect a wired mic (sold separately) and karaoke versions of songs from a mobile device and you’ve got the party set for karaoke night. Acoosta Uno is a direct competitor to Saregama’s Carvaan but the thing that works in favour of Acoosta Uno is the huge library that pleases everyone and quality audio performance.

BenQ’s affordable monitor supports 4K and HDR WORDS KUNAL GANGAR

e’ve seen a surge in the availability of 4K TVs, thanks to the lowering cost of 4K panels but affordable 4K monitors are still scarce. BenQ is trying to shake things up with the EL2870U. The BenQ EL2870U goes for the gaming and entertainment users with its 4K and HDR support. But is it worth it? Let’s find out. The BenQ EL2870U has a very plain look. The bland looking 28-inch display on the front is surrounded by large bezels with just an HDR/B. I+ toggle button at the bottom right and OSD buttons at the bottom. Limited connectivity ports are at the back with two HDMI ports and one DisplayPort. Interestingly, the stand is the most stylish part of the exterior ZLWK D EUXVKHG ĆQLVK EXW LW GRHV QRW DOORZ DGMXVWPHQW RI KHLJKW RU VZLYHO ,W supports VESA mount. The monitor has a TN panel and supports a maximum resolution of 3840x2160 pixels with a native contrast of 1000:1 and response time of 1ms. The resolution on a supported computer or a gaming console makes the content look sharp and crisp but the viewing angle is less than stellar. The monitor supports HDR10 standard that can be toggled with the button at the bottom right and in our test; we found the HDR performance improvement to be marginal when we hooked the monitor up with a PS4 Pro playing Red Dead Redemption 2. This is most likely because of the display’s maximum brightness of up to 300cd/m2. The monitor also comes with other bells and whistles. For AMD Radeon users, the monitor supports FreeSync that helps eliminates image tearing and eliminates broken frames. The monitor also features two 2W speakers or a 3.5 headphone jack for audio. There’s Super Resolution that claims to upscale pictures to a higher resolution but it tends to over-sharpen the images and Smart Focus that blackens out the display except for selected window or area for improved focus. Finally, the monitor supports TÜV 5KHLQODQG FHUWLĆHG ORZ EOXH OLJKW DQG ćLFNHU IUHH WHFKQRORJ\ WR UHGXFH H\H fatigue. On paper, the BenQ EL2870U seems like a perfect monitor on a budget and while it offers 4K with few enhancements here and there, the HDR performance is underwhelming.

Just Cause 4 Rico Rodriguez returns to cause mayhem and destruction Prices vary; PC, Xbox One, PS4

ust Cause as a series has always been more about the havoc and destruction one can create than the story and this year’s Just Cause is no different. You play as Rico Rodriguez who travels to Solís and help the rebels free the area from the clutches of a powerful organisation called Black Hand. The thing that is different this time is that Rico’s travel to this fictional location is to find information on his missing father. While Avalanche Studios have given you something to keep you interested in, the premise of Just Cause 4 remains the same as previous Just Cause games. This thinly veiled storyline shows promise initially but if we are being honest, that is not Just Cause’s forte but it’s the endless mayhem and destruction, which the new Just

J

Cause 4 handles it well. New and improved weapons along with the improvised grappling hook make it easy to wreak havoc and destroy Black Hand’s property, resulting in chaos and weakening them. Every rebel in Solís wields a gun but the thing that sets Rico apart from the crowd is its grappling hook, which is better than ever. The grappling hook can be customised to airlift objects and people or can be used as boosters or retractors. For instance, you can airlift vehicles or heavy objects up in the sky or use retractors to bring two objects together to create an explosion. This is a nifty addition that enhances the grappling hook’s use. Traversing through Solís can be done via a car, bike, a boat or a plane but it’s the combination of a grappling hook, wingsuit and parachute makes it easy to go from

one place to another without the help of a modern day vehicle. It requires a bit of learning curve as it does not seem as intuitive as say, Marvel’s Spider-Man but once you get a hang of it, roaming around the huge map becomes easier. Avalanche Studios uses the new Apex engine for Just Cause 4 and while the new engine solves the loading time and performance dip issues that plagued Just Cause 3, we can’t really say the same for the visuals. While parts of the game look breathtaking, some elements look underwhelming. For instance, water and explosions looked better in Just Cause 3 than in the latest game. Despite its shortcomings, Just Cause 4 is fun to play if you like a free hand approach to missions, defying physics and mindless explosions. Retro

T3 3 India as a magazine/ezine rightly focuses on products that are new and under development. This, of course, does not suggest or imply that everything old is bad and outdated. The pace at which technology moves, demands that we cover all product developments for our readers. In few cases, this means going back to the

84 T3 Tomorrow’s Technology Today JANUARY 2019

past. Look at the worldwide revival of turntables. Only 15 years ago, the turntable was consigned to the dustbin. Today, pressing plants are hard pressed to meet the demand. The area where retro is most in demand is music – both Western and Indian, and T3 3 India seeks to address this gap. We hope you enjoy this section.
