EORGIAN APARTMENT

Carey’s choice:

A TWO-TONE WALL Create an on-trend paint effect in any room by dividing your walls with two shades – the possibilities are endless!

W

hy choose one colour when you can have two? If you’ve fallen in love with a shade but don’t want to cover an entire wall, or simply prefer to mix things up, then a twotone effect is the perfect solution. There are no rules, but a darker shade on the bottom with a neutral or lighter colour on the upper section is a sure-fire way to success.

Mark your meeting point

Decide where you’d like your two colours to meet – whether that be halfway, three-quarters or even further up the wall. Take a tape measure and mark this point on the wall using a pencil. Repeat at regular intervals along the wall.

Apply the lighter colour

Team a deep colour on the bottom half with a light neutral to make walls look taller

IDEA TO STEAL

For a cohesive look, continue the effect across the door

Start by cutting in using a paintbrush using the lighter of your two colours only on the part of the wall you want it to cover. Fill in the rest of the section using a roller, painting slightly over the point where you want the dividing line to be.

Cut a length of string that’s longer than the width of your wall and run a piece of chalk along it, covering it well. Make sure the first paint colour is completely dry then stretch the string across the wall, lining it up with your pencil marks, and secure the ends with masking tape. Once the string is straight, tap it against the wall so that it leaves a chalk line. Apply masking tape along this line to create your divide.

Apply the darker colour

As with the lighter shade, use a paintbrush to cut in around the edges of the second half of the wall in the darker paint shade. Use a roller to fill in the rest of the wall, then pick up the paintbrush again to carefully paint over the edge of the masking tape. Gently peel off the masking tape while your paint is still wet to reveal your design. You should have a crisp line between your two colours.
