BUSINESS GUIDE 2017 Embracing technology, embracing ambition

TROX: COmpRehensive and fleXible sOluTiOns fOR labORaTORies Energy efficiency is arguably one of the most talked-about topics the last years. This is all the more true for long-term investments where a considerable percentage of the costs are operational running costs that will rise over many years (life cycle costs). Not surprisingly, modern ventilation and air-conditioning technology is a decisive factor in buildings, as the design and operation of demand based ventilation systems can reduce both capital and operating costs. TROX has positioned itself as the technological leader in this field, and offers ventilation and air-conditioning components as well as complete air management systems for office buildings, public buildings, universities and even more for hazardous areas such as laboratories and clean rooms. The wide spectrum of air conditioning systems, units and components puts TROX into a unique position: being able to find a bespoke solution for different conditions and for each lab building. The high number of proven solutions, and the extensive expertise that TROX engineers have built up over the years and by working on the most diverse projects, provide our customers with tailored air conditioning systems and overall safety. Moreover, as a member of the German Sustainable Building Council, TROX demonstrates that sustainability is built into its products. Laboratories are energy-intensive spaces, consuming up to 3 or 4 times as much energy as the typical office space. The laboratories of the typical research-based university can account for between 50% and 80% of the site’s total carbon emissions. At a time when environmental performance of universities is becoming more and more important, laboratory energy consumption is often a major obstacle in the university’s carbon reduction plan. Reduction of energy usage in the laboratory requires extremely careful consideration. It is essential that health and safety is not compromised by inadequate air ma-
nagement. The integrity of testing and research outcomes also relies on the correct environmental conditions being maintained. There are, however, a number of effective energy saving approaches that can be applied to achieve all of the required outcomes: reduced energy costs, improved sustainability performance, and better air management in laboratories for greater environmental consistency. solutions for effective energy saving in laboratories Any strategy to address laboratory energy usage should begin by checking whether the energy efficiency potential of the site faces limitations due to the use of outdated technologies. It is quite common for older laboratories to employ Constant Air Volume technology which is sized for maximum requirements but incapable of reducing air supply in line with demand. Modern Variable Air Volume systems offer far greater efficiency by reducing the loading on energy consuming components in the ventilation and air conditioning system (such as air handling units, chillers and fans) at times of low demand. Most modern labs will have Variable Air Volume technology in place, and it is a matter of finding ways of optimizing the energy efficiency potential of the system. Fume cupboards are a good place to start. When sashes are open, the volumes of air required to maintain a safe working environment for the laboratory personnel increase significantly. As this air has been conditioned, using energy-consuming chillers, fans and dehumidifiers, this has implications for energy efficiency. Scientists can only work at the fume cupboards, of course, if the sashes are open. Research shows, however, that it is very common for sashes to be left open unnecessarily when laboratory personnel are away from the fume cupboards. Changes in work practices or visual reminders in the laboratory
can often reduce energy consumption by drawing this to the attention of personnel. Alongside these personnel-based improvements, the laboratory manager may also decide to harness the advantages of technology such as PIR (passive infrared) sensors or auto sash closers. When the PIR sensor identifies that no-one is present at the fume cupboard for more than the set time, it will trigger a visual or audible alarm to indicate that the sash has been left up. easylab: TROX‘s Room air management system A more comprehensive method for improving energy efficiency is the installation of a room air management system to automatically control all input and extract air for the laboratory to ensure that the required ventilation strategy is maintained. This is an increasingly popular option as it ensures the room balance is maintained automatically. All devices are connected locally, which provides safety and comfort in the laboratory at all times. EASYLAB allows all controllers in the network to immediately communicate once they have been installed. Due to their modular hardware structure controllers can be adapted to individual requirements. Plug-in connections combine easy installation with flexible expansion options. Once a fume cupboard has been commissioned, it can be included in the room control, and removed again, at any time and without readjustment. TROX Belgium has installed this in the Lavoisier building of the University of Louvain-La-Neuve. The demands were very specific: the personnel had to be protected from hazardous substances in the most energy efficient way and at all times. With LABCONTROL and the EASYLAB controller TROX has developed an air management system which was ideal for the refurbishment of the laboratory of the University of Louvain-La-Neuve. TROX Belgium also delivered LABCONTROL components in laboratories of the Bio-Incubator in Ghent, which is an independent research institute, funded by the Flemish Government, with 1.300 scientists from 60 countries working at the different Flemish Universities in Belgium. Reducing the air changes in laboratories When specifying air conditioning and ventilation systems,
engineers design their schemes around the number of air changes (the volume of air replaced by new air each hour) necessary for the space and the activities carried out within it. A typical office space for example would require four air changes per hour. In the laboratory environment, due to the nature of the activities and substances present in the space, the number of air changes is typically set considerably higher. This has a significant impact on the site’s energy consumption. There are various scenarios in which the number of air changes can be reduced. One opportunity is to set the BMS to reduce air change rates overnight or at the weekend when the laboratories are unoccupied. Introducing Occupancy Detection in each lab is another way to increase the air changes. Only when an individual lab becomes occupied will the lab control system change from reduce to standard mode achieving significant reductions in energy usage and carbon emissions. There may also be opportunities to reduce energy consumption by rethinking sash working height or the face velocity of the fume cupboard. In conclusion, it is perfectly possible to manage the air flows in and out of the laboratory to maintain the safety of workers, and still optimise the energy consumption of the facility. Many of these options offer automatic optimisation to ensure that environmental performance is improved without requiring disruption to well-established working practices. The extensive know-how and expertise gained from many meetings with specialist consultants have led to the development of innovative and practical solutions which fulfil the desire of customers for simplified assembly, wiring, commissioning, maintenance, and expandability of the system. It is not surprising that TROX air management systems are successfully used in hundreds of laboratories all over the world. TROX has both the knowhow and the expertise to continually raise standards in the field of air distribution for laboratories. Since 1998 our experts have been members of the standards committees for the EN 1822, EN 14175, DIN 1946 Part 7, and other guidelines and have provided valuable input to these bodies.
