BUSINESS GUIDE 2018 Een significante toegevoegde waarde

TROX: The customized solution for air quality in shopping centres Most stores and business owners want potential customers to spend as much time as possible in the shop, to increase the chance of them finding the product they would want to buy. Therefore, good room air quality has a definite impact on how successful a shopping centre is. Perfect ventilation for shopping centres The ventilation strategy for a shopping centre depends on many factors. It starts with structural conditions like architecture, location and orientation or the size of the spaces. In addition, other factors such as occupation and the use and equipment of the stores play an important role. Finally, the ventilation system depends on whether it is designed for a new building or for a renovation. TROX possesses a broad spectrum of ventilation systems, units and components, which offers the possibility to give a customized solution for any different circumstance and for each shopping centre. Streamlined design with TROX Studies confirm that a good quality of indoor air is considered important to keep customers in stores longer and thus stimulate purchases. This means that indoor ventilation systems must provide both high air quality and thermal comfort, thus ensuring a comfortable temperature and humidity.
Energy efficiency The energy required for a shopping centre results from electricity, heating and cooling, and is responsible for a considerable part of the operating costs. In light of the growing number of shopping centres and their considerable energy requirement, developing sustainable ventilation and air conditioning schemes for this type of building is an absolute necessity. To put things into perspective: Retail property makes up for 28% of all non-resident buildings in Europe and is hence the biggest segment. Almost 7% of all retail space is taken up by shopping centres. A retail area of roughly 112 million m² consumes 378 kWh of energy per m² and year, or five times as much as a modern residential building. According to the EU, an energy savings potential by factor 4 (75% increase in resource efficiency) is feasible.
Air diffusers provide a void free air supply, while airwater systems efficiently expel the heavy thermal load. A thousand DUK-diffusers were installed in the shopping centre Les Grands PrĂŠs in Bergen. DUK-diffusers are aluminium jet nozzles which inflate air at a high speed. They are especially useful in larger areas with high ceilings, where an even air supply through ceiling diffusers are not appropriate.
Effective and efficient filters Indoor air quality depends among other things on filter quality. A filter is an obstacle in the airflow which leads to a pressure drop. A fan helps to overcome this obstacle in the airflow, and this in turn has an influence on the energy costs. Although filters incur 60% or more in energy costs over their life cycle, filters for ventilation and air conditioning are often selected without sufficient care. This is unfortunate since the importance of filters cannot be overestimated. Inefficient filters create a considerable pressure drop, which means that the amount of energy that is consumed rises rapidly. According to a rule of thumb, a pressure drop of 1 pascal causes 1 euro increase in energy costs. This amount is bound to increase since we all know that energy costs are on the rise.
They fit perfectly in contemporary buildings, due to their modern look. Their streamlined design also provides a high level of acoustic comfort.
In Europe, 10% to 20% of electrical energy consumed by industrial processes is used for the operation of fans in ventilation and air conditioning systems, and one
third of this energy is required to overcome the pressure drop caused by filters. It seems obvious, that the energy efficiency of filters cannot be neglected; it is in fact very important. TROX’ filter technology Most shopping centres are located in urban environments and are therefore exposed to significant particulate matter pollution due to the high traffic volume. It should come as no surprise that shopping centres, such as the new Docks building in Brussels, require particularly efficient filter systems to keep the hazardous fine dust away from building occupants and visitors. While filter classification to EN 779 was based on a particle size of 0.4 μm in the past, filter efficiency is now tested using three different particle sizes ranging from 0.3 to 10 μm. This is an important step towards avoiding particulate matter pollution. TROX has developed effective and efficient filter systems to handle the high levels of particulate matter found in city centres. These filters were placed in the cinema of the shopping centre. “Safety first” with the fire and smoke protection systems for shopping centres When it comes to fire protection, people come first. TROX shows how the individual components of a fire and smoke protection system have to interact in an emergency to ensure people’s health, save lives and protect property. Shopping centres are very complex buildings that experience high footfall. Air conditioning has, then, a two-fold function: First, to move enormous volumes of air in order to provide high comfort levels. And then, of course, to make sure that people in buildings are safe. In the event of a fire, every second counts. All safety-related components and systems, such as smoke detectors, fire dampers, smoke control dampers and smoke exhaust fans, have to function reliably and without any delay. This is only possible with an overall control system. TROXNETCOM – many components, one interface TROXNETCOM is a dedicated control system for complex fire protection equipment in buildings. All the safetyrelated information for fire protection and smoke extract is read and controlled via one central interface. TROXNETCOM makes use of an advanced network architecture to check all the connected components and to forward data immediately to the relevant points, e.g. to the central fire alarm system. Regular functional tests are carried out and documented to ensure that all components and systems function reliably in the event of a fire. Standard interfaces such as BACnet or Modbus enable the exchange of data among all building services
and with the central BMS. You can find more information about this system on the website of TROX Belgium. EK-JZ smoke control damper – ideal for keeping escape routes free from smoke The multileaf EK-JZ smoke control damper is installed in the walls of shafts that are used for smoke extract. The damper is ideally suited to keep stairwells free from smoke; it can be installed in fire-resistant smoke extract ducts as well as in underground car parks. Thanks to its size and compact depth, EK-JZ dampers are suitable even for installation in restricted spaces, and they extract smoke at high volume flow. High-temperature resistant EK-JZ dampers are fitted with specially contoured, aerodynamic blades and an innovative two-level sealing system, which ensures tightness with high and low temperatures. The new multileaf EK-JZ smoke control damper is easy to install due to its rectangular construction and the integral actuator encasing; there are no protruding parts. TROX GmbH and TROX Belgium have built a solid reputation in recent years, both in the renovation of shopping centers and in the construction of brand new complexes. It works with the best engineers and architects to develop ventilation strategies that meet specific relevant criteria for each building. For example, the Wijnegem Shopping Center was provided with hundreds of TROX products and also in the Belle-Ile shopping center in Liege, TROX was consulted for the placement of different products. With its dedicated Research and Development, TROX has positioned itself as the global leader of innovation in the fields of ventilation and air conditioning. TROX not only offers ventilation and air-conditioning components, but also complete air management systems for office buildings, public buildings, universities and even for laboratories and clean rooms. The high number of proven solutions, and the extensive expertise that TROX engineers have built up over the years by working on the most diverse projects, provide our customers with tailored air conditioning systems and overall safety. Moreover, as a member of the German Sustainable Building Council, TROX demonstrates that sustainability is built into its products. TROX has positioned itself as the technological leader in the market, and offers ventilation and air-conditioning components as well as complete air management systems for office buildings, public buildings, universities and even more for hazardous areas such as laboratories and clean rooms.

Danfoss Drives - Motor technologies for higher efficiency in applications A new control algorithm for Danfoss VLT® frequency converters now opens up for synchronous reluctance motors. High efficiency synchronous reluctance is one of the newly-emerged motor technologies offering optimum energy utilization. At the same time, it is a robust technology and maintenance requires little effort, so all in all it demonstrates impressively low return on investment times. Freedom of choice When the diverse motor technologies within one plant are controlled by a single drive platform, the designer has full liberty to install the best value motor for each application. At the same time costs are reduced for both storage and training in operation of the frequency converter. And updating the system with the new motor technology is an easy retrofit, as no exchange of the drive is required. These advantages are precisely the benefits VLT® frequency converters offer. The VLT® AutomationDrive is able to control a wide variety of motor types, now including synchronous reluctance. Control not only involves operating the motors using advanced Voltage Vector Control, but also the full realization of the
efficiency advantages. This realization is possible due to specially adapted algorithms for operation at the optimum operating point. Fast commissioning With the new Danfoss firmware for synchronous reluctance, commissioning is as easy as for a standard AC asynchronous motor. The installer must enter only four motor parameters. The automatic motor adaptation for synchronous reluctance motors takes only 2.7 seconds to measure the motor characteristics and optimize the motor parameters. The motor then operates at the highest possible energy efficiency, for lower energy consumption and reduced running costs. Danfoss’ “One VLT® for all motors” approach is different to that of competitors, because it enables motor independence including synchronous reluctance at no extra cost, whilst still ensuring optimal performance. The same frequency converter can be configured for operation of standard asynchronous machines, permanent magnet and synchronous reluctance motors, and even existing installations can be upgraded with the new software.
