SUMMER LEARNING ADVENTURES INFORMATION

Dates:

Summer School begins on Monday, June 17 and runs through Friday, July 19. There will be no classes held on Thursday, July 3 & Friday, July 4, 2024

Times:

Incoming 5K - Current 5K (Momentum Program) at Brookfield Elementary

Classes begin at 8:00am and end 11:55am

Grade 1 - Grade 3 at Swanson Elementary Classes begin at 8:10am and ends at 12:05pm

Grade 4 - Grade 8 at Brookfield Central High School Classes begin at 8:15am and ends at 12:15pm

Location:

Incoming 5K - Current 5K (Momentum Program) at Brookfield Elementary, 2530 N Brookfield Rd, Brookfield. PLEASE REGISTER ALL STUDENTS AT THEIR CURRENT GRADE.

Current 1st - 3rd grade classes will be held at Swanson Elementary, 305 North Calhoun Road, Brookfield. PLEASE REGISTER ALL STUDENTS AT THEIR CURRENT GRADE.

Current 4th - 8th grade classes will be held at Brookfield Central H.S., 16900 Gebhardt, Rd, Brookfield WI 53005. PLEASE REGISTER ALL STUDENTS AT THEIR CURRENT GRADE.

Fees:

The District will use Infinite Campus to allow parents to pay summer school transportation fees. You are encouraged to pay fees online via a debit/credit card or e-check, no additional transaction fees will be applied. To begin, login to your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account. Refunds:

NO BUS REFUNDS are issued once the summer school session has begun. May 17, 2024 is the last day transportation changes can be made or canceled to be eligible to receive a refund.

Open House:

Tuesday, June 11, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm

You and your child can navigate the hallways to see where their classrooms are located. Staff will be available.

Registration:

• Registration opens on Tuesday, March 12 and closes on Tuesday, March 19 at 12PM via the Infinite Campus Portal.

• For current Elmbrook District students you will log into your Infinite Campus Account and select 23-24 Summer School Registration. Follow the prompts to select your summer school courses.

• If you are a new family with children entering Kindergarten in 202324, please complete the District’s online enrollment form and provide required verification documents by March 8, 2024.

• PRIVATE & PAROCHIAL STUDENTS ENROLLING FOR SUMMER SCHOOL Online Enrollment Instructions

• New Private Parochial Students to Summer School: In order to be eligible to register for summer school you must complete the online registration and upload requested verification documents by March 8, 2024

• Returning Private and parochial students: If your child attended summer school in the district last year you will need to complete online enrollment in order to ensure we have the most up-to-date information on file. This needs to be completed by March 8. You do NOT need to provide residency verification or your child’s birth certificate.

• Course placement is by lottery, every student has the same priority in course placement. Your Summer School Schedule will be posted in your student’s Infinite Campus Account on or about April 9 at 12PM.

Transportation:

Due to the number of students enrolled in Summer School, students are strongly encouraged to use the district bus transportation. Students will board buses at their neighborhood school and be transported to summer school locations. At the end of the summer school day, students will be transported back. There is NO home-to-home service

Bus transportation is not available for students attending only one or two periods a day. If your child receives free or reduced lunch at school, you are eligible for free tuition for bus transportation. You must notify the summer school office to have the waiver applied.

Transportation Fee:

$50/child with a two student fee cap. Click here for instructions on how to view and pay summer school transportation fees. Please email the summer school coordinator at summerschool@elmbrookschools.org if you have more than 2 students. The system doesn’t automatically acknowledge the discount.

Bus Locations for Morning Pick-Up & Afternoon Drop-Off:

Buses will pick-up and drop-off students at each of the following buildings in the District: Burleigh, Dixon, Tonawanda, Pilgrim Park, Wisconsin Hills, Brookfield East and Fairview South.

• Bus schedules will be posted on the Summer School section of the website two weeks before the first day of classes.

• Notification will be sent to parents closer to the start of summer school

Parent Drop-Off:

• Please do not park and leave your vehicle unattended in the drop-off area. This area is utilized for a quick curbside drop-off and pick-up only.

• All waiting vehicles will be asked to pull forward as other vehicles leave to relieve congestion.

• We ask parents who wish to escort their children in and out of school to please park in designated locations.

SUMMER LEARNING ADVENTURES INFORMATION CONT.

After School Care:

The West Suburban YMCA will be offering a 5-day Summer School Wrap Around Camp for K-8 grade at Swanson Elementary School from 12:15-6:00 pm. To participate in the YMCA program, the student must be enrolled in a third period class. To register or for more information about this camp visit online at www.gwcymca.org. If your child is attending summer school at Brookfield East High School and will use the YMCA Wrap Around Camp, you MUST sign up for busing and pay for the bussing fees. Please contact elmbrookwrapcamp@gwcymca.org with questions or for more information.

YCARE Transportation: if your child will attend Brook El or BCHS and will need transportation to YCARE at Swanson, you will need to select this during transportation signup. That option will look like the following: BUS OUT YCare BUS OUT-BCHS to Swa YCare ONLY

Students With Individual Educational Plans (IEPs):

If you feel your child with a disability may need access to the accommodation provided to them during the school year in their IEP to participate in a summer school course, please contact your child’s case manager to set up an IEP meeting.

*Please note that having an IEP does not bypass the lottery process for summer school.

New Students with Medical Needs

If your student has medical needs and may require summer school staff to intervene (administer emergency, scheduled, or as needed medications) we will need physician orders prior to the first day of summer school.

Existing Students with Medical Needs

If your child is currently a student in the district and we already have been providing above medications/cares, we will NOT need additional orders, we will use the orders from the 23-24 school year.

In this course, students will investigate key Pre-Algebra concepts that will serve as a foundation for Algebra. Preparation will focus on the following learning targets: solving algebraic problems and graphing linear equations using rational numbers; Understanding ratios, proportions, percents; Applying and demonstrating an understanding of the distributive property; Solving a multi-step equation with real numbers; Writing and solving equations from story problems; Graphing functions – slope, triangle; Variation, rate of change, x&y intercept; Multiplication & division properties of exponents. Students who enroll in this course should feel comfortable with rigor and an accelerated pace. The verdict is in! The defendant is…… In this class students will learn about courtroom trials, legal terms (arrests, defense, guilt, Miranda warning), and our U.S. legal system. Students will read the background of certain legal cases and divide into prosecution and defense teams. The students will act out the trials of accused persons and prosecute or defend the accused. In addition, we will look at the U.S. Constitution and discuss certain amendments. The course requires high-level thinking and problem solving.

The focus of this course is to develop students as readers by having them engage with a variety of literary genres. Specific instruction will focus on basic comprehension skills, analysis of text, textual inferences, and literary responses. Robotic Exploration

Students will look at the various aspects of robotic construction and design. Working in small groups, students will design, build and program different robotic machines to solve a variety of problems. Robots will be judged in a series of friendly competitions with classmates.

Introduction to Coding Robotics

In this course, students will learn some basic coding skills to code simple robots to do a variety of tasks. Each week, the students will get to use a new robot such as Ozobots, Spheros, or Dash & Dot, and Lego robots grow their problem solving, creativity, and coding skills.

Running Through Summer

Grades 4-6

This course will teach you everything you want to know about running and more. We will do short distance running to longer distance running. Our goal will be to run a 5K together. Along with running you will learn all about the life long skills that becoming a runner creates. Each day there will be a lesson about character.

Campers engage in outdoor fitness activities, obstacle courses, parachute games, relay races, bean bag activities, and team sports such as basketball, soccer, etc.

Paper Crafting

We will study Paper Crafting techniques including mini-scrapbooking crafts and other paper projects in this course. Students will explore crafting using paper or cards as the primary artistic medium for the creation of two or three dimensional objects

This class will focus on the STEM design process. Students will work on creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking as they build towers, bridges, catapults, marble mazes and more. They will plan, explore, design and build together using science, technology, engineering, and math skills.

The focus of this course is to develop students as writers by having them engage with a variety of genres, which may include narrative, argumentative, and informational writing. on topics of their choosing. Specific instruction will focus on leads, organization, elaboration, craft techniques, conclusions, and basic conventions. Instruction will be provided in a workshop format including whole group, small group and individually in order to target individual student needs and interests.

This course is offered to anyone, grades 4-8, looking to study privately or in a small group on a band or a string instrument. Space is limited to 180 in Band and 45 in Strings. Summer band and orchestra lessons offer students a chance to improve performance on their instruments, review technique in the summer, and play exciting music that will appeal to their ability and personality. Summer lessons offer students a chance to receive small group professional instruction. Each student will be scheduled for four 30 minute sessions. It is strongly recommended that incoming 6th grade students who are first time band or orchestra members consider signing up for this opportunity.

Calling all 6-12th grade band Elmbrook Schools Band Students! Join the Super Band and serve your community and honor your country by marching in the Brookfield 4th of July Parade! The Elmbrook Super Band consists of 6-12th grade band students and any Elmbrook 6-12th grade students can be in the band. We have one rehearsal in June before the school year ends and then we march in the parade on July 4th! This course offering is a strength, speed, and conditioning course geared toward the highly motivated student who wants to improve their strength, power, speed, endurance, agility, and flexibility through a five week summer training program. The goal of this class is to improve student’s athleticism off the field so they can reach their potential on the field. All students will participate in specially designed weight workouts, agility and conditioning programs that best fit their desire to improve. Students will get the tools needed to be successful High School student athletes through the daily hard work, sweat, and effort in the fitness activities offered to them in the course, as well as developing the platform to live a healthy lifestyle.

Dates: June 10-13; June 17-20; June 24-27; July 1-3; July 8-11; July 15-18 (Dates/Times are tentative and may be changed at coaches discretion.) The coaching staff will provide any updates and changes directly to the students before the program begins.
