Welcome to Go Yorkshire’s Guide for 2016 The Yorkshire Dales are a truly unique region of contrasts and beauty. They straddle the Pennines, spanning North Yorkshire, the southern fringes of rural Cumbria and urban outskirts of West Yorkshire. The countryside in the area is so spectacular that large parts of it are in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, one of only 15 areas in Britain preserved and maintained for their natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage. It is home to some of the prettiest villages and friendliest people in the land. There are 20 main Dales, including the more dramatic and upland areas of Arkengarthdale, Wensleydale and Swaledale. The lower southern areas of Airedale, Wharefedale and Nidderdale are gentler with rolling hills and pasture land. Early farmers cleared the woodland and developed the trademark patchwork of fields enclosed by dry stone walls that are such a recognised feature of this stunning area. During your visit here, you will discover stately homes, magical castles, sleeping abbeys and amazing attractions, all amid the backdrop of the fabulous scenery. To make sure that you get the best out of your visit, we have highlighted some of the best places to visit and many of the events which take place each year. Visit our website www.goyorkshire.com to discover more. We wish you the warmest welcome for 2016 from all the team at Go Yorkshire.

The wide sweeping valley of Wensleydale opens out before you as you leave the A1M and travel from Bedale, a pretty Georgian market town and travel towards Leyburn. This is an ideal place to break your journey, with plenty of interesting shops and cafes. As Bedale is the gateway to Wensleydale, Leyburn is the town at the heart of the Dale and capital of lower Wensleydale. Both towns make ideal bases for exploring not only the Yorkshire Dales, but are well placed for visiting the North York Moors, Coast or York. From Bedale to Hawes, the town at the head of the valley, is a distance of approximately 50 miles which takes about an hour to drive. That is if you can resist not stopping, as the valley is studded with wonderful attractions both natural and manmade. It is ideal walking country, the Pennine Way crosses Wensleydale and there are walks to suit all abilities. From Hawes, the road divides and you can take the road to Sedbergh and the Lake District, head over to Ingleton, Settle and the Three Peaks or across the valley, through the hamlet at Hardraw, via the famous Buttertubs Pass, to Swaledale. Constable Burton Hall
The Forbidden Corner
MUST SEE ATTRACTIONS 14th century Bolton Castle is one of the country’s best preserved medieval castles. Originally built as one of the finest and most luxurious homes in the land, the castle bears the scars of over 600 years of fascinating history. The castle is still in the private ownership of Lord Bolton, the direct descendant of the castle’s original owner Sir Richard le Scrope.
The Forbidden Corner is a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises created within a four acre garden in the heart of Tupgill Park in the Yorkshire Dales. A tourist visitor attraction unlike anywhere that you have been before, ideal for the adventurous and those young at heart!
Brymor Ice Cream Parlour - Whatever the weather, nothing beats a visit to this award winning ice cream parlour for one of the best ice creams you will ever taste! There is a play area to keep the little ones happy whilst you can relax and enjoy.
Thorp Perrow Arboretum, near Bedale, holds the most important collection of trees in England. It is a great day for all the family with nature trails, a mammal centre and plenty of activities on throughout the year.

White Scar Cave is the longest showcase in England. An excellent tour with knowledgeable and informative guides which lasts about 80 minutes, taking you over 1 mile underground.
www.goyorkshire.com | Harrogate & The Dales - Wensleydale & Swaledale
As you drop down into Swaledale, the landscape dramatically changes to a steep u shaped valley studded with stone barns that were built to protect the sheep and livestock from the harsh winters. This is the most peaceful and least developed of all the Dales, there is one road through the Dale that follows the River Swale passing through the pretty villages of Keld , Muker, Gunnerside and Reeth. The picturesque town at the head of the valley, Richmond is crowned by the magnificent Norman castle that dominates the skyline.
Richmond Castle
Prehistoric people lived here. Earthworks remain and artefacts from the Bronze and Iron Ages can be seen in the Dales Countryside Museum, Hawes. The famous Swaledale sheep are found throughout the more mountainous areas of Great Britain, but particularly in County Durham, Yorkshire, and the lower fells of Cumbria. They manage to cope with the adverse weather conditions, and make excellent mothers. Both males and females have curled horns and thick straight, off-white coats and black faces marked with white. The Buttertubs Pass winds its way north from Simonstone near Hawes towards Thwaite and Muker past 20 metre deep limestone potholes called the Buttertubs. It is said that the name of the potholes came from the times when farmers would rest there on their way to market. During hot weather they would lower the butter they had produced into the potholes to keep it cool.
The annual Swaledale Festival takes place over two weeks, 28th May to the 11th June. Small scale classical chamber music, choral music, folk music, brass bands and jazz features, as do talks, films, exhibitions, poetry readings, workshops and guided walks.
DON’T MISS The legacy of lead mining, once a major industry remains, and high above Grinton on the moor, you can see the well preserved remains of a lead mining chimney and mill. Wonderful Waterfalls - The most famous and dramatic is Aysgarth Falls situated about midway along the valley, but there are many others that are easily accessible. West Burton Falls, Redmire Force and Hardraw Force all make an interesting family day out with easy short walks. Wildflower Meadows - Both valleys are awash during spring and summer with an abundance of wild flowers.
Thorpe Perrow
Middleham is a pretty little town on the opposite side of the valley to Leyburn. Middleham Castle, once the childhood home to Richard III, is famous as the racehorse centre of the North. www.goyorkshire.com | Harrogate & The Dales - Wensleydale & Swaledale

The cosmopolitan streets have a good selection of interesting and diverse shops, galleries, museums, restaurants and cafes as well as 200 acres of town centre grassland known as The Stray. Harrogate is the ideal place to amble and indulge in all that’s on offer, famous for its many antique shops and galleries, it is an ideal place to pass an afternoon. The town is a fearsome devotee of Britain in Bloom and has carried off many awards. It is easy to understand why as throughout the year there are dazzling floral displays that bring out the best of this picturesque town. it is also home to the RHS Garden Harlow Carr, a must for gardeners. Situated just outside the town centre is Harlow Carr, the RHS’s most northerly garden in England. A quiet and peaceful oasis it is a must for gardeners with excellent planting and year round interest. Betty’s has a tea room there too, so you can enjoy a treat for the tastebuds as well as your other senses! Nearby Ripon, the third smallest city in the country, attracts thousands of tourists each year who come to see its famous buildings with their long Christian heritage. The designated World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal is one of Yorkshire’s jewels and has a series of events throughout the year, including nature walks and concerts. Riverside paths lead to the deer-park, home to red, fallow and sika deer and ancient trees; sweet chestnuts, limes and oaks. The Himalayan Garden at Grewelthorpe is set in 20 acres of woods, lakes and streams within 3 different valleys, in a spectacular setting. Many of their specialist plants have been grown from seed collected by modern day plant hunters in China, Nepal, India, Burma, Bhutan and Tibet. It is a wonderful and exciting garden only opened for a limited

Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal time during the spring and autumn, but not to be missed. If all the splendours of nature are leaving you a bit thirsty why not visit the famous breweries of Theakstons and Black Sheep in Masham or for one of the best ice creams you could wish to taste, Brymor Ice Cream Parlour is deliciously decadent! Masham is also home to the annual sheep fair on 25th and 26th September, with an action packed schedule of events. Reminiscent of a French market town, with its large market square, handsome church and beautiful mellow yellow Yorkshire stone buildings, it is an interesting town to visit with riverside walks, cafes and is a centre of excellence for local artists with galleries and shops filled with beautiful mementos of your visit.
Hackfall, set along the banks of the River Ure, near the village of neighbouring Grewelthorpe is a woodland garden with magical follies and winding paths with stunning vistas. JMR Turner painted the woods and falls in the early 19th century and it was a popular haunt with Victorians.

Follow paths through the water garden to the Banqueting House and Temple of Piety between May and October this year to see visual magic of the most extraordinary kind by internationally renowned artist Mat Collishaw. Skipton, the capital town of Wharfedale, is often referred to as the “Gateway to the Dales”, it is crowned by a magnificent Norman castle and has a bustling high street full of independent shops and cafes. Once just a small farmstead, it gradually evolved over the centuries into a major centre trading in sheep and wool. The Leeds Liverpool Canal completed in 1846, took 46 years to build and brought continued prosperity to the town, transporting goods from the mills and quarries. The town is as busy today as it has been throughout the centuries. In March 2014 The Sunday Times judged Skipton as the “best place to live” because of its proximity to the Yorkshire Dales, great schools and its independent shops along a ‘buzzing’ high street. Nearby Wharfedale dominates the Southern Dales scenery, with its wide sweeping valley and river, and neighbouring Airedale that borders the urban outskirts of West Yorkshire. Easily accessible from Leeds, Bradford and Manchester, the area is very popular with day trippers who tend to favour hot spots like Bolton Abbey and picturesque Burnsall, especially on a sunny day. But there are still plenty of beautiful places to escape the crowds if you are prepared to walk, or enjoy exploring off the beaten track.

Airedale gives its name to the Airedale Terrier the largest of the Terrier breed of dogs. They were first bred in the area in the early nineteenth century. During World War 1 an Airedale Terrier named Jack saved his battalion by carrying a message across a battlefield swamp whilst under constant fire. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for “Gallantry in the Field”
Kilnsey Park Estate
DON’T MISS Malham Cove - 800 metres walk from the National Park Car Park, in the village is one of the impressive natural features in Britain. The circular walk from Malham village, climbing up the steep steps and walking over to Gorsdale Scar, before returning to the village along the river by Janet’s Foss, a beautiful waterfall, is a walk we recommend all visitors should undertake if able, as the views and landscape are quite spectacular. There is good wheelchair access to the cove itself to see the magnificence of this natural spectacle, and you can spend hours watching the star attraction of Peregrine Falcons who nest in the Cove.
Skipton Sheep Day takes place on the first Sunday of July in the High Street. It showcases what Skipton and the Yorkshire Dales has to offer with demonstrations, stalls, entertainment and food. Another main event on the annual calendar is Skipton Christmas Market which has been constantly voted in the top 10 of the UK’s best Christmas Markets
Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway - a great day out is to take a scenic ride from Embsay to Bolton Abbey, and explore the beautiful Yorkshire estate of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire who lived here until they took over the running of Chatsworth House. Its showpiece is the 13th century Augustinian Priory situated by the River Wharfe.
Skipton Castle
Skipton Castle - one of the most complete medieval castles left in Britain was restored in 1646 by the remarkable Lady Ann Clifford after it was damaged in the Civil War. Kilnsey Park Estate - with fishing, kids activities, friendly farm animals and the best of local food, Kilnsey is a great Yorkshire family day out. Grassington - the home to the Yorkshire Dales National Park headquarters is a pretty little town full of cafes and interesting shops. There are many walks in the area and a popular walk is to Burnsall along the River Wharfe. The Brontë collections at the Brontë Parsonage Museum are the largest and most important in the world and continue to inspire scholars, writers and artists. Brontë 200 is a five-year programme celebrating the bicentenaries of the births of each of the Brontë siblings: Charlotte in 2016, Branwell in 2017, Emily in 2018 and Anne in 2020.

Settle is a picturesque market town and home to the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway. It is also gateway to the wild and lovely Forest of Bowland and the dramatic scars and limestone landscape of Upper Ribblesdale, great cycling and horse riding country. Known collectively as the Three Peaks, the hills of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-Y-Ghent, are all over 700 metres high. The peaks, which form part of the Pennine range, encircle the heads of the valleys of the River Ribble and of Chapel-le-Dale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Whernside (736 metres) does not look quite as imposing as the other two peaks, being more rounded in nature, but is actually the highest peak and its summit is the highest point in North Yorkshire. Ingleborough (723 metres) is without doubt the most popular of all hills in the Yorkshire Dales with easy access from Ingleton or Clapham. Its distinctive rounded shape with a flat top, was once home to an ancient hill fort and has stunning views, particularly across to the Ribblehead Viaduct. Pen-Y-Ghent (694 metres) is a marvellous hill. The profile of Pen-Y-Ghent is dramatic from all aspects and is usually the start of the of the popular 37 1/2k walk, ‘The Three Peaks Challenge’. As you ascend the hill it resembles a sitting lion. And a lion of an ascent it is too, for the final push to the top up its southern face, is as close to a scramble as one will face in the Dales. The limestone strata of the Yorkshire Dales, houses an extensive network of caves, including the beautiful Ingleborough Cave at Clapham and White Scar Cave, which boast the longest show cave in Britain and sits at the foot of Ingleborough on the road between Ingleton and Hawes. Both caves offer excellent guided tours. The neighbouring picturesque village of Ingleton, nestling below Ingleborough is probably one of the most visited villages in the Dales. It is dominated by the imposing, 11 arched viaduct which overlooks the village, a legacy of the railway which brought the first tourists to the area in the form of excursion trains. Today visitors come to enjoy the dramatic and beautiful Ingleton Waterfalls Trail along the River Doe. The trail takes you through ancient oak woodland and boasts one of the last colonies of our native red squirrel. For the energetic there is an enjoyable circular walk to White Scar Cave, which makes a perfect day out.

Children will love this magical cave full of stalagmites and stalactites. The trail is wheelchair and pushchair friendly. There are plenty of cafes and a pub in the village if you need refreshments. For the energetic, climb one of the three peaks, or all three! Design led artisan giftware, jewellery, sculpture, glassware, ceramics, prints, books, stationary and so much more Take a ride on the Settle to Carlisle Line. Explore the extensive White Scar Cave and visit the longest show cave in Britain Enjoy a walk along the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail and you might be lucky enough to see a red squirrel.
REFRESHMENTS The Naked Man Cafe, Settle The Courtyard, Settle Clapham, there are plenty of tea shops and a pub
INTERESTING FACTS Two long distance footpaths bisect the area. The Pennine Way crosses the summit of Pen-Y-Ghent and the Ribble Way follows the River Ribble from its source at the foot of Whernside. Of course the most famous walk is the Three Peaks Walk, a thirty seven and a half kilometer circular walk taking in all three peaks. The potholes and underground network of caves attract cavers from all over the country. The famous Gaping Gill network, at Ingleborough Cave, is England’s highest unbroken waterfall plunging 110metres underground vertically down a pothole, into Britain’s second largest cavern. Ingleton is situated at the junction of two rivers, the River Twiss from Kingsdale and the River Doe from Chapel le Dale. Ingleton was mentioned in the Domesday Book and its name means “Beacon Town”, and was originally settled in the Iron Age by the Brigantes. Ingleton hosts the annual “Overground Underground Festival”. It takes place between late May and early September and is a celebration of activities which all the family can enjoy together, such as running, swimming, walking, biking and of course caving.

Yorkshire Day is held on 1st August every year to celebrate Yorkshire’s unique culture and dialect. The unofficial anthem of Yorkshire is the popular folk song is On Ilkla Moor Baht ‘at (“On Ilkley Moor without a hat”), The area around Haworth is known as Brontë Country in recognition for the three Brontë sisters’ contribution to English literature. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë is perhaps best known. There are 40 individual Yorkshire Dales. The limestone pavements have formed over 12,000 years since the end of the ice age. Much of the wealth in the Dales was created from the wool industry. The Settle to Carlisle Railway is 72 miles long, passes over 325 bridges, 21 viaducts and through 14 tunnels and 103 culverts. It was opened in 1875.
The Strid near Bolton Abbey is where the Wharfe narrows to 5′ . Many lives have been lost in its fast flow. The village of ‘Booze’ in Arkengarthdale is actually the Norse name for ‘the house on the curved hillside’. Between 1780 and 1820 a variety of Enclosure Acts led to the creation of many of the dry stone walls which so characterise the Dales. There are roughly 4,700 miles of them. Bing Crosby used to shoot on Darrowgill Moor near Pateley Bridge.
At 1,133 feet Dent station is the highest mainline station in England.
Charles Blodwin once walked over Hardraw Falls on a tightrope stopping half way to cook an omelette.
It took 5 years to build the Ribblesdale viaduct which spans 1/4 of a mile and is 100 foot high.
A Harry Potter film used Grassington Moor and the limestone pavements above Malham Cove as locations.
The Tan Hill Inn on the northern border of the park is Britain’s highest inn at 1,732 feet.
The skills to make cheese in Wensleydale were introduced by French Monks from Jervaulx Abbey in about 1150.
The Dales is one of the last bastions of the endangered red squirrel.
As well as the famous falls, Aysgarth boasts the largest churchyard in England
Part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park is actually in Cumbria. Askrigg is the ‘Darrowby’ of James Herriott fame. The Kings Arms was the ‘Drovers’ and Cringley House doubled as ‘Skeldale House’.
HUBBERHOLME CHURCH St Michael and All Angels, Hubberholme, is one of the most historic and picturesque of all churches in Wharfedale. Dating from the 12th century, it is the farthest church up the dale and was originally a Forest Chapel of the Norman hunting forest of Langstrothdale Chase. It is situated on the site of an Anglo-Norse burial ground, and the tower of the original Norman church still exists. St Michael’s was originally dedicated to the Northumbrian St Oswald, and was given to the monks of Coverham Abbey in 1241. Within the church is the rood loft which was relocated to the church in 1558, and was probably situated in Coverham Abbey prior to its moving. Only two of these lofts still survive in Yorkshire, the other being at Flamborough on the east coast. P: 42
The pews are beautifully carved by Robert Thompson, the “Mouseman of Kilburn”. Several of his trademark mice can be seen carved in them. The author, J.B. Priestley, described St Michael and All Angels Church as “one of the smallest and most pleasant places in the world”. He has a memorial at the back of the church and his ashes were scattered in the churchyard.

A town for all seasons
Situated between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District lies a beautiful and undiscovered corner of Britain, known as the Eden Valley. At its heart lies the picturesque market town of Appleby- inWestmorland with good quality accommodation, shops, excellent places to eat and drink, an imposing castle and friendly locals, it is an ideal base to explore this corner of England. The beautiful River Eden runs through its centre and the town is surrounded by beautiful walks and quaint villages to discover.
History and Heritage
During the 9th century, Viking settlers arrived in the Eden Valley and established the first homestead near Bongate in Appleby and at many other places along the river Eden. The town’s river crossing was an important vantage point and the Normans built Appleby Castle as a defence above the town. The Clifford family took over the castle in the 13th century and remained in residence for the next 400 years. For several centuries, Appleby was the county town of Westmorland,
however with the creation of Cumbria in 1974, the name of the town was changed to preserve the name of the ancient county and as a reminder of the town’s heritage
A Walkers’ Paradise
The town is surrounded by many famous walking routes including The Dales Highway, Lady Anne Clifford’s Way, The Westmorland Way and the Pennine Way . The most famous walk is to High Cup Nick, a classic U-shaped glaciated valley, high on the western flanks of the North Pennines and a geological wonder.
Other Activities
Appleby is situated on the Sea-to-Sea cycle route and many of the quiet lanes form part of the National Cycle Network. For the horse lover there are many bridleways and the River Eden is a fisherman’s paradise renowned for its trout fishing.
Appleby Events Appleby Horse Fair - held every June, it is a major event for travellers, its origins date back to 1685. Harness Racing - Held at Holme Farm, there are various fixtures throughout the season. Appleby Town Carnival - this colourful event is held every July. Appleby Agricultural Show - 20th August 2016.

Leeds - Settle - Carlisle train services run seven days per week, all year round (except Christmas Day and Boxing Day). For further information ring (08457) 484950, or see website. Some stations have bus links. Free guided walks are sometimes available.
Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line
The Friends are a large, voluntary, rail user group who support and promote the line. We maintain the station gardens; provide guided walks; supply On Train Guides; produce marketing literature; and send our award winning quarterly magazine to members. Read more about the Friends and the railway on our website. Engineering works to improve the line can occasionally take place and then train services may be substituted by buses.
