Welcome to Go Yorkshire’s Guide for 2015 The North York Moors are characterised by their incredible beauty and a calming sense of space, solitude and tranquillity. Whatever the season, the Moors offer the perfect place to get away from it all. The spectacular cliffs and sandy coves of the North Yorkshire Coast form a dramatic backdrop to the North York Moors National Park. Ridge upon ridge of purple heather moorlands extend into the distance, while the natural beauty of secluded dales and rugged, heritage coastlines make it the ideal place to explore. The charming fishing port of Whitby has little changed since the days of its famous son, Captain Cook. With its sheer cliffs and ominous, gothic architecture, Whitby proved to be the perfect inspiration for Bram Stoker’s famous dramatic novel Dracula. For a bustling and buzzing seaside atmosphere, try Scarborough. Packed with seaside attractions, the coastal town caters for the whole family. The East Yorkshire coastline ranges from the golden splendour of some of Britain’s finest beaches to the wave pounded rocks of the East Coast’s highest cliffs at Flamborough Head. The Yorkshire Wolds, with their quaint country towns, and rolling chalk hills, provide a more gentle contrast to the drama of the Moors. The 79 mile Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail attracts thousands of visitors each year, whilst other, less adventurous, visitors prefer to be enchanted by the beauty of the scenery, the picturesque villages, market towns and historic houses. The Wolds also boasts plenty of quaint inns and fine churches and a visit to the area would be incomplete without an afternoon spent admiring the Gothic splendour of Beverley Minster with its rose windows and columns of Purbeck marble. We wish you the warmest welcome for 2015 from all the team at Elmtree Press. Bridlington, courtesy of East Yorkshire Council www.goyorkshire.com | North York Moors, East Coast & The Wolds

With just a Weekend in Yorkshire, here are some suggestions so you can make the most of your time .... Absorb yourself in the great outdoors with a weekend away on the North York Moors. Escape city life and engage in an activity of your choice to stretch your limbs and soothe the soul. Our breathtaking scenery will transport you to another world and an insight into another life that so many of us, not born in Yorkshire have chosen to adopt. When Sunday evening arrives you will reluctantly say goodbye to a window on another life, but refreshed and rejuvenated, we are sure you will agree that one visit will not be enough!

FRIDAY EVENING After checking into your accommodation and, depending upon the time of arrival, we recommend a local walk to stretch your legs and get you in the mood for the weekend. After you have worked up an appetite with your walk, enjoy a meal at a local Yorkshire hostelry and meet the locals.

SATURDAY Challenge yourself by trying out a new activity like surfing on the coast, horse riding over the moors, cycling in Dalby Forest or plan a long walk with a break at a local pub of course! More diverse activities are on offer such as gliding at Sutton Bank but you do have to plan ahead as availability is limited.

HERE ARE SOME OTHER SUGGESTIONS Take a train ride from Pickering across the Moors to Whitby or explore picturesque Rosedale with its ancient iron workings and neighbouring Hutton le Hole. Visit the Moors Centre at Danby and then follow one of the most scenic and remote routes in Britain, the upper Esk Valley to Great Ayton where Captain Cook was born. Drive back along the coast stopping off at one of the scenic fishing villages of Staithes or Robin Hood’s Bay.

The North York Moors is a special place, forged by nature, shaped over generations – where peace and beauty rub shoulders with a rich history and a warm welcome.

Remember to pick up a copy of the Go Yorkshire Mini Guide or download the app for discount vouchers and offers for venues across Yorkshire. SUNDAY Depending upon how strenuous your day was yesterday, you may choose to have a more relaxing Sunday, here are a few suggestions that may interest you:

International Centre for Birds of Prey

Head for Helmsley and enjoy a wander around the shops and lunch at Scott’s Fish and Chips, or visit one of the many attractions that are situated in or around the town. An enjoyable walk is the circular route from Boggle Hole along the beach to Robin Hood’s Bay and back along the disused Railway Line. You will still have time to visit Whitby or Scarborough as well if you so wish. Do make sure you check the tide times before you set out though otherwise you risk getting cut off! There are a wealth of attractions to discover, great houses, gardens, museums as well as wildlife and animal centres which will enthral and inform you of the rich history and life in this part of Yorkshire. You really will be spoilt for choice! Heading south when you make your way home? Then why not take a leisurely route through the Yorkshire Wolds, the deep v shaped valleys and poppy fields are a different landscape to the North York Moors. Stop off at Beverley Minster to marvel at this Gothic gem and then only a short drive on is the city of Hull and the iconic building and aquarium, The Deep.

National Railway Museum

Alternatively if you have not visited the city of York before, then a stroll around the city on a Sunday morning and a visit to the National Railway Museum may be just the ticket!

You’ll find Ryedale nestling between the historic city of York and the spectacular North Yorkshire Coast. If you want the peace and tranquillity of the Yorkshire countryside, stunning scenery is right on your doorstep from anywhere you stay in Ryedale. You’ll never be short of things to do - if shopping is your thing then the market towns of Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, Malton and Pickering host bustling weekly street markets and independent shops and galleries offer a wealth of shopping experiences. From the traditional antiques auctions, agricultural store and rope makers in Malton to quality boutiques and delicatessen in Helmsley, and craft shops and artists’ galleries in Pickering, the choice is yours. A true Yorkshire welcome awaits you. Many of Yorkshire’s most loved and best-kept villages are here, such as Thornton-le-Dale and Hutton-le-Hole. However, if you stray off the beaten track and explore the lesser-well known villages you will be equally rewarded. These villages are amongst our most scenic assets where you can explore the historic village churches, sit by the village pond and feed the ducks or take in a traditional Yorkshire pub lunch. Award-winning restaurants provide delicious food raised and made in the surrounding North Yorkshire countryside, all to be devoured while soaking up some of the best views in the country. Festivals and special events draw crowds from far and wide and each town boasts its own special attraction to suit all ages and interests. The area is rich in history with an abundance of abbeys, castles, historic houses and museums that will take you on a fascinating journey through time. Families are spoilt for choice with theme parks, stunning gardens and craft centres – plenty to keep a smile on your face all day. The market towns provide the perfect base for visiting the wider area. For more information, see our guide to Ryedale’s Market Towns available in Tourist Information Centres and accommodation providers across the area.

A TOWN FOR ALL SEASONS Helmsley has everything you’d expect in a quintessentially English market town: a vibrant market square, independent, specialist shops, excellent places to eat and drink, an imposing castle, friendly locals, a babbling brook, beautiful surrounding countryside.... It’s got even more! A walled garden, bird of prey centre, arts centre, micro-brewery, open air swimming pool, over 50 listed buildings, a luxury spa, a nature reserve, galleries and an arts centre. Two abbey ruins, Michelin-starred restaurants, and the North York Moors National Park are on the doorstep. History & Heritage Helmsley was first settled around 3000 BC and archaeological remains show evidence of Bronze, Iron Age, Roman and Viking settlements. William the Conqueror’s half brother, Count Mortain held the lands around Helmsley and you can still visit the ruins of the Norman castle, and see ancient oak trees in Duncombe Park dating from this time. Helmsley is one of only 17 towns named in the Magna Carta. For several centuries, Helmsley’s economy relied on sheep farming, wool and weaving. The town was later developed and expanded by the Duncombe family who built Duncombe Park. A statue of William Duncombe stands in the Market Place. Yorkshire Hospitality at its finest! Whether you want a quick break or a more indulgent treat, Helmsley has plenty of delights. Many of Helmsley’s cosy tea rooms and cafes are housed in beautiful historic buildings with a wonderful atmosphere. Some pride themselves on offering a Yorkshire menu featuring local

produce, while others are more cosmopolitan. Many have fibre optic wifi. Helmsley has its own micro-brewery as well as some lively pubs. Many visitors marvel at the sheer number and range of food shops and restaurants in such a small market town. Known for its fantastic ingredients and specialist food suppliers, it’s no surprise that there is an award winning fish and chip shop and there are Michelin-starred restaurants just a few miles away! Why not stay for longer? Helmsley is an ideal base for touring the North York Moors National Park and coast. Walk, ride or cycle Helmsley is where the popular 110 mile walking trail, The Cleveland Way begins. There are also beautiful walks and tracks in the surrounding woods and valleys. In early spring, carpets of snowdrops are gradually replaced by the pungeant smell of wild garlic and a blanket of bluebells line the forest floor in April and May. Meadows full of wild flowers in the summer and the glow of foliage in autumn creates an ever changing landscape and is a delight to walk or ride through. Why not follow the circular walk to Rievaulx Abbey (and back!), where you can listen to the audio tour telling the story of the monks

INTERESTING FACTS Did you know that Helmsley has its own open air swimming pool? Popular with the locals, it is only open in the summer. Helmsley is a real “honey-pot” for art collectors. Its galleries have an ever-changing range of quality art to rival the major cities with ceramics, sculpture, paintings and photography by international and local artists. Craftspeople like Keith the Stick Man, timber specialists Duncombe Sawmill and the sugar craft of Celebration Country Cake Designs are keeping crafts alive, using traditional materials and methods, with a contemporary twist.

Whitby is a magical place to visit, steeped in history and oozes charm. It is a town divided into two halves by the River Esk that widens out into a busy harbour and is home to a small fishing fleet, guaranteeing that the freshest of fish is always available. Cottages with tumbling red roofs seem to spill down the hill and the old town with its cobbled streets and interesting shops is crowned by the ruins of the ancient abbey that dominate the town. On the north side of the harbour, the crescents of handsome Georgian houses, many converted into hotels, look out to sea, with a gentle slope snaking down to the sandy beach below. The famous whalebone arch frames the steps that descend to the harbour paying homage to Whitby’s dominance in the whaling industry of the 18th and 19th centuries. The life sized statue of Whitby’s most famous hero, Captain Cook stands proudly nearby on the headland looking out to sea. The magnitude of his epic

voyages can be discovered by visiting his home, The Captain Cook Museum, across the bridge in the old part of town. For those fortunate to have visited the Southern Hemisphere and to have stood on Captain Cook Beach in the South Island of New Zealand, the sense of the achievements and bravery of this man is overwhelming and humbling. The Victorian villas that run behind the Georgian seafront are lined with B&Bs offering a warm welcome and comfortable accommodation. They back onto the beautiful Pannett Park that was bought for the benefit of the town by local solicitor and Alderman, Robert Pannett in the early 20th century. He met with so much opposition to his plans for transforming what were allotments, into a garden and art gallery for the enjoyment of local people, that it was not until after his death that his wishes were finally granted, and the garden and buildings created. In 1927 the foundation stone for the art gallery was laid and latterly Whitby Museum was built behind the art gallery to accommodate the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society who wanted to relocate from their cramped premises on the harbourside. Robert Pannett’s dream was finally realised. His private art collection was donated to the new gallery and the museum ensures that Whitby’s rich and historical past is preserved for future generations. However, Pannett Park is not always peaceful, as the excellent children’s play park next to the museum and gallery is often full of happy children enjoying themselves and for families it is well worth visiting.

When Prince Albert died in 1861 Queen Victoria entered into ‘severe mourning’ and would allow only jet black jewellery to be worn at court. The Victorian people followed this style and soon jet jewellery became the height of fashion.

Why not take one of the Fossil Finding trips organised by Whitby Fossil Shop, “Natural Wonders” on Grape Lane. Ideal for families and beginners. Dates are tide dependant so specific dates only, usually mornings with varying start times dependant on date. Please see www. fossils-uk.com for more information.

This stretch of coastline which runs from Staithes in the North to Flamborough in the south is about 35 miles long and is known as the Jurassic, Fossil or Dinosaur Coast. As you can imagine by the name, it is a source of fossils dating back over 120 million years. In Whitby whole dinosaur footprints can be seen on the beach but over the whole area you can find a variety of fossils including prehistoric fish, lizards and crocodiles, leaves, flowers and ferns, ammonites, bivalves, starfish and corals. The Ravenscar Trail is at the southern most end of Robin Hoods Bay and is a treasure trove of fossils but is not suitable for small children due to the vagaries of the tides and the steepness of the cliff trails! Seven and a half miles of coastline around Whitby is home to Whitby Jet, the fossilized remains of the Araucaria or Monkey Puzzle tree from the mid Jurassic period. There are many workshops, heritage centres and shops dedicated to the elusive gemstone in Whitby and many happy hours can be spent in contemplating the history of jet and also perhaps choosing a memento of your visit!

Roseberry Topping the distinctive conical shaped hill was caused by a landslip in 1921 due to excessive iron stone mining. A good walk in all seasons and a sense of achievement when you reach the top! The summit is 1,056 feet above sea level. The pretty hamlet of Sandsend Runswick Bay, with its wide sweeping sandy bay is one of the prettiest beaches on the North Yorkshire coast. Staithes – this pretty fishing village with white washed houses and cobbled streets is also home to an artists’ colony which dates back to the 19th century when a group or artists inspired by the French impressionists such as Monet, Cézanne and Renoir created a base here. The remote and pretty moorland village of Goathland, most famously known as Aidensfield in the popular television series ‘Heartbeat’, is a beautiful drive across the moors, especially in late summer when it is a haze of purple heather. There are many waterfalls in the area, including the famous Mallyan Spout a 70 ft waterfall adjacent to the Mallyan Spout Hotel. The village is a popular stopping off point for those travelling by train.

With two stunning blue flag beaches, top attractions and three theatres attracting top acts and shows, Scarborough has it all for a traditional seaside holiday. Relive childhood memories eating fish and chips along the promenade or take a ride on one of the restored fairground rides at the Scarborough Fair Collection. Leave the car behind and take a ride on the North Bay Railway through beautiful Peasholme Park to the Scarborough Sea Life Sanctuary where you will discover a magical underwater world of amazing creatures. Visit their seal hospital where they save over 30 seals each year and learn about the problems these beautiful creatures face and the work the Sanctuary does to care for them.

Stephen Joseph Theatre celebrates its 60 anniversary this year. Established by Stephen Joseph in 1955, the Scarboroughbased company has become an internationally-renowned cultural icon specialising in new writing. In celebration of their people, plays and history, the anniversary year features no fewer than 60 events..

Scarborough is a great holiday destination for all the family, whatever your age; there is something to interest each generation. The wide sandy beaches are great for games, perhaps a family cricket match, or a ride on a donkey for the little ones. Why not build a sandcastle with the kids and in the holidays there are lots of organised beach activities to keep them happy whilst you relax. Join a guided walk and discover where dinosaurs once roamed and learn about life along the shores. When you have had enough of the beach, there is a Sky Trial Adventure in Peasholme Park, crazy golf, or enjoy a delicious ice cream. Grandma and Grandpa are not forgotten either. With a beautiful walk along the promontory and seats overlooking South Bay this is a grand view, especially on a clear day, and a tranquil spot above the bustling town. Perhaps a game of bingo is in order, in one of the grand hotels that line the front, or dance the afternoon away at a tea dance at Scarborough Fair! With a large calendar of events there is always something happening!

216 million visits to Yorkshire are made every year, equivalent to the total number of visitors to Walt Disney Attraction Theme Parks worldwide. English Heritage look after Wharram Percy, a classic deserted village in the Yorkshire Wolds. The village was abandoned in the 16th century probably when farming methods changed from arable fields to sheep. The biggest inhabitants at The Deep in Hull are a stunning pair of Green sawfish in Endless Oceans. This tank contains 2.5 million litres of water and 87 tonnes of salt. Nunnington Hall was once home to Queen Elizabeth I’s doctor. The Fife family who owned the Hall in the 1920s used to flood the garden in winter so the children could go ice skating. A Witch Post can be found at the Ryedale Folk Museum. It is thought that the posts were intended to protect the house or hearth from the influence of witches or prevent them from entering the house.

George Formby, the famous entertainer was an apprentice jockey at Norton, near Malton. Over 50,000 visitors come to see the small yellow daffodils every year in Farndale. The banks of the River Dove are covered with “Lenten Lilies”; these are the true wild daffodils native to Great Britain. A unique gallery of 15th century wall paintings was rediscovered in 1878 in the church of St Peter and St Paul in Pickering. They had been originally whitewashed over by the vicar as he thought the scenes might inspire idolatry. Mr Bernard Harland of Pickering was responsible for growing one of the largest known gooseberries in 1994. The Yellow Woodpepper Gooseberry, weighed 31drams 22 grains, and won first prize at the Egton Gooseberry Fair. The date for Easter was fixed at the first church synod, held at Whitby Abbey in 664. It also established the supremacy of the Roman Catholic Church in England.

A cave, thought to be a hyena den, was found at Kirkdale in 1821. In it the remains of hundreds of hyena, bear, tiger, elephant and wolf were discovered. King Edward II was almost captured by an invading Scottish army as he sat dining with the Abbot at Byland Abbey. The Battle of Byland was fought in 1322. The woods at the end of Rievaulx Terrace are a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is one of the few homes to the Rievaulx Beetle. The Terrace, which was created by the Duncombe family, took 8 years to build and was finished in 1757.

CITY OF YORK The City of York makes a great day out and is easy to reach by car, bus or train. If you decide to drive, our advice is to take the Park and Ride, this fast and regular service will drop you in the city centre and halve your parking costs. One of the most beautiful cities in the United Kingdom, York has it all. The magnificent York Minster dominates the skyline and there is a wealth of historic buildings and houses to visit, as well as some of the finest national museums in the country, including York Dungeon and the National Railway Museum. There is plenty to offer and entertain. The Shambles is definitely a must see, not only for the wealth of architectural features, but also for the great shops and galleries in what is acknowledged as the oldest surviving shopping street in Europe! Perhaps take a walking tour or, alternatively, one of the best ways to discover the city and learn about its rich past, is to take the City Sightseeing bus, enabling you to see the city in one day. So, whether you fancy a day’s shopping, sightseeing or having a lovely meal out, York is definitely the place to go.

THE WOLDS South of the Moors lies the Yorkshire Wolds which offer a softer backdrop after the sheer drama of the landscape in the North. In place of the steep cliffs, heather covered hills and secluded sandy coves of the Moors, you will find instead gently undulating grasslands and picture postcard villages complete with cottage gardens and village ponds, definitely life at a slower pace! The sandy beaches of Bridlington beckon across the magical chalk upland beauty and deep v shape valleys of the Wolds Way and remote resorts of Withernsea and Hornsea further down the coast. A visit to the area would not be complete without a trip to the ancient town of Beverley and its iconic Minster. Home to the tomb of Lady Eleanor Percy, it is largely regarded as the finest surviving examples of Gothic art and free to visit. Lying serenely at the mouth of the Humber is the famous port of Kingston upon Hull. This is a thriving city with fabulous shops and a buzzing nightlife. Why not take a stroll along Hull Marina and head for the retro Fruit Market area, home to many art galleries, quirky shops and places to eat. Hull has also been chosen at the City of Culture for 2017.

The Deep is one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world and is home to a whopping 3,500 fish including Europe’s only pair of green sawfish, spectacular sharks and rays and a newly established colony of Gentoo penguins.

THE YORKSHIRE DALES Westwards across the Vale of Hambleton lies Yorkshire’s other famous National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park which was created in 1954 to protect the special and unique environment. The Dales is a perfect contrast to the North York Moors, East Coast and Wolds and is ideal walking country. Characterised by deep river valleys and upland meadows, full of wild flowers in spring and summer, each dale is unique and offers different wonders to experience. Whether enjoying the beautiful wild flowers in the summer or admiring the craggy fells in the winter, there are always lots of well signposted walks to enjoy and pretty stone villages to explore and a wealth of attractions to visit. The beautiful spa town of Harrogate to the south of the park is also an enjoyable place to visit. It is a great shopping centre with lots of independent shops and of course, the high street favourites. Harlow Carr, the most Northerly RHS garden is situated here and is one of the most interesting gardens to visit in Yorkshire.

Harrogate Stray has had approximately 6 - 7 million crocus planted in the grass areas over the years to create an eye popping floral treat in Spring.
