Welcome to Go Yorkshire’s Guide for 2016 The elegant city of York is surprisingly compact, especially considering how much beauty, history and culture it boasts. With a vast choice of museums, historic houses and theatres, and a wealth of architectural splendour to admire, you will soon appreciate why visitors come back time after time.

Turn to page 48 for a list of key events happening in York and the surrounding area in 2016

From the Railways to Chocolate, York has been the central hub for many industries throughout the centuries. Over the last decade, £800 million has been invested into York’s science and technology infrastructure creating a strong network of over 500 science and technology related businesses, attracting new skills and opportunities. Home to two universities, Ripon College of St John and York University, renowned as a centre of excellence and research for science, the city has a large student population which contributes to its vibrant atmosphere. The best way to learn about York’s colourful past is to join one of the many tours or take a gentle wander down the beautiful, cobbled streets and enjoy the bustling atmosphere of the shopping district. Packed full of independent shops, boutiques and all the latest big names, York provides the perfect excuse for a gentle stroll and a spot of self-indulgence. Today visitors are as much attracted to the large choice and variety of retailers as much as the wealth of attractions to visit. There are lots of things still left to do; perhaps you’ll decide to jump on a city sightseeing bus, enjoy a riverside picnic, take a trip on the river or explore the hidden gems that this city has to offer. Our guide to the city will help you make the most of your stay. York is a city that suits all tastes, be it for a long weekend or a base to explore the rest of Yorkshire, one thing we are sure of is one visit is definitely not enough! We wish you the warmest welcome for 2016 from all the team at Go Yorkshire

Barley Hall is a stunning medieval townhouse, once home to the Priors of Nostell and the Mayor of York. Located on the doorstep of York Minster, the building has been lovingly restored to its original splendour with stunning high ceilings, beautifully exposed timber frames, boasts a magnificent Great Hall and is decorated to replicate what it would have looked like in 1483. Barley Hall has an annual changing exhibition area. Full details of the current exhibition are available on the website.

What better place for a short break than beautiful, historic York. Here are just a few suggestions to help you make the most of your time .... DAY ONE: EVENING After dropping your bags off at your hotel, get the mood of the city with a guided Ghost Walk. It is an entertaining way to learn about York’s colourful past. Afterwards dine at one of York’s many restaurants (see pages 30 and 33 for some ideas).

DAY TWO: MORNING Enjoy a hearty breakfast then set off to explore the city. Don’t forget to pick up a copy of our Go Yorkshire Mini Guide (your accommodation provider should have some) before you leave, so you can make use of the discount vouchers inside. Catch a City Sightseeing Tour Bus, an informative and interesting way to get your bearings in a new city, with the option of stopping off at the main attractions en route. After the tour alight at the Minster and explore this magnificent cathedral. Climb the 275 steps up the tower to work off your breakfast and for the magnificent panoramic view.

LUNCH If the weather, is fine take a picnic in the beautiful Dean’s Garden – a little green oasis of calm situated behind the Minster. Alternatively treat yourself at one of the many fine cafes situated nearby.

York is an archaeologist’s dream. It contains one the very few ‘wet sites’ in Britain, where organic materials such as leather and wood survive.

National Railway Museum

“The International Ghost Research Foundation announced that York was officially the most haunted city in Europe

AFTERNOON

After lunch, spend the afternoon exploring the Shambles, which boasts one of the largest and finest selections of independent shops in Europe. Wander around Newgate Market, where you can pick up local food and other interesting goods, each day. Chocolate lovers will enjoy visiting York’s Chocolate Story which is situated nearby in Kings Square and has an excellent cafe.

York’s Chocolate Story

For those loving all things aeronautical, visit the Yorkshire Air Museum which is also home to the Allied Air Forces Memorial and the largest independent aviation museum in the UK. Their restoration workshops and displays make it an excellent trip out.

EVENING With theatres, nightclubs, bars and cafes there is plenty going on in and around the city to enjoy in the evening. A relaxing dinner and floodlit river cruise on Yorkboat is another great way to unwind after a busy day. York Theatre Royal’s new season opens in April and has a programme of fabulous plays running throughout the summer and autumn, and has a popular cocktail bar too!

DAY TWO: MORNING No visit to York would be complete without taking up the challenge of walking the city walls. At over 3.5 kilometres long they are the most complete walls of any medieval city in England. Log on to the Friends of York City Walls at www.yorkwalls.org.uk, to download their excellent factual information. Located on the city walls at Monkbar and Micklegate are Richard III and Henry VII’s experiences where you can find out more about the part they played in War of the The Roses. If you feel that walking the walls would be too strenuous, why not discover two of York’s hidden gems, Fairfax House, one of the finest Georgian Houses in England or The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, a medieval gem.

LUNCH For those that love a Sunday lunch Russell’s Restaurant is nearby and serves a selection of delicious roasts and vegetarian alternatives all day.

AFTERNOON Work off your lunch by climbing to the top of Clifford’s Tower, one of York’s most famous landmarks and you will be rewarded for your efforts with the amazing view. Finally a twenty minute walk will take you to the National Railway Museum which is free to enter and is a relaxing and informative way to spend the afternoon. For more suggestions and recommendations on places to visit, shop and eat visit our website www.goyorkshire.com or download our GoYorkshire app for the latest offers. www.goyorkshire.com | York & District - A short break in York

The Shambles is one of the bestpreserved medieval shopping streets in Europe. It was once known as The Great Flesh Shambles, probably from the AngloSaxon Fleshammels (literally ‘flesh-shelves’) and still have exterior wooden shelves, reminders of when cuts of meat were served from the open windows. “Shambles” is an obsolete term for an open-air slaughterhouse and meat market. Unfortunately none of the original shop-fronts have survived from medieval times although the wood shelves and meat hooks are still visible. The street was made narrow by design to keep the meat out of direct sunlight and as recently as 1872 there were twenty-five butchers’ shops in the street but unfortunately they have all now gone.

The unique beauty of The Shambles has been recognised and awarded the title of the most picturesque street in Britain in the Google Street View Awards. This has a certain irony as during the medieval period there were no sanitary facilities and so guts, offal, and blood were thrown into a channel running down the middle of the street This has now lead to any scene of total disorganisation and mess being now referred to as, “a shambles”. Five Snickelways often mis-spelt as Snickleways join the Shambles. These are small medieval paths or lanes between buildings. They often have quirky names too. Three of them are called Mad Alice Lane, Hornpot Lane Nether and Finkle Street (formerly Mucky Peg Lane). Pope’s Head Alley is only 2ft 7ins wide! Today it is a fabulous place to stroll on a day out with a wealth of interesting shops cafes and restaurants to visit.

Despite four out of town shopping centres, all with different offers to attract visitors, York city centre has an unrivalled reputation for the wealth of independent shops and quality retailers creating a shopping experience which is one of the finest, if not the best in England. This was reflected in a recent survey claiming that as many tourists come to York because of the great shopping experience, as do to visit the traditional tourism haunts. Shopping these days is definitely part of the tourism mix.

Here is our guide to shopping hot spots worth seeking out when exploring the city:-

Stonegate

A beautiful wide cobbled street where you will find smaller good quality shops as well as jewellers and galleries. Shopping once again has become an enjoyable experience and York is certainly the jewel in the crown. With four out of town shopping centres, all the major high street chains, plus hundreds of independent and specialist shops situated in and around the Shambles, wandering around the pedestrianised streets is a pleasant experience. Even the most ardent anti-shopper will find something to interest them and while away an afternoon.

The Emperor Septimus Severus ruled the entire Roman Empire from York for two years. He died in 211 AD, and is buried somewhere beneath the old city. The Bar Convent hosts an exhibition which includes the severed hand of Margaret Clitherow, a Catholic martyr and saint whose shrine is housed in the Shambles. The wife of chancellor to the Minster, Jane Hodson has a memorial in the Minster. She bore 24 children and died in 1636. Mother’s Day must have been the highlight of her year! A lightning bolt struck the Minster in 1984 and started a serious fire three days after the consecration of the controversial David Jenkins as Bishop of Durham. The worst fire of modern times was in 1829, when Mad Martin a religious fanatic, set fire to the Quire which is where the throne of the Archbishop of York is housed. These days, the capitals of the Quire columns are decorated with a variety of fanciful carved heads. York has more miles of intact city walls than anywhere else in England. Did you know that York Minster has its own police force? The only other cathedral in the world which can boast this is St. Peter’s in Rome which has its own police force in the form of the Swiss Guards. A little red devil sits chained outside 33 Stonegate, staring benevolently at passersby! It is not, however, a sign of demonic antics within, it is actually the traditional symbol for a printer. Be careful though, it is supposed to be unlucky to look into his eyes! There is a law still on the statute books which says it is legal to shoot a Scotsman in York. The only snag is it has to be any day but Sunday, and only with a bow and arrow! York Minster, the largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe, took 252 years to build and contains 128 stained glass windows.

There is a stained glass window in All Saints Church, North Street, which is truly unique. The Pricke Of Conscience window, which dates from 1425, is the work of John Thornton. It portrays the final 15 days to the end of the world. Individual panels show floods, earthquakes and fires- Armageddon in fact! The Roman Goddess Minerva symbolising wisdom and drama resides at the Junction of Minster Gates and Low Petergate. The shop below was owned by John Foster between 1580 and 1607, and housed 3,000 books, an amazing number for those times. Interestingly enough, he also sold lottery tickets! There are a number of stone cats, the trademark of architect Tom Adams scattered throughout York. There are two on a building in Low Ousegate, one of which looks like it is walking up the wall!

There is so much to see and do in York, but some of its finest treasurers take a little bit of uncovering. If you make the effort to explore, you will experience some of the most memorable moments of your trip to York. All are based in the city centre and offer an informative and charming way of spending part of your holiday. The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is one of the most complete Medieval Guildhalls in the world, and is still owned and used by the York Company of Merchant Adventurers, who built it over 650 years ago. It is situated between Fossgate and Piccadilly.

Tucked away through an 18th century archway off the busy thoroughfare of Goodramgate is the church of the Holy Trinity, a hidden gem and an oasis of calm in the heart of the city. Merchant Adventurers’ Hall

Clifford’s Tower is not the most obvious choices of being hidden, as it is one of the most famous landmarks in York. However, take the trouble to climb to the top of the tower, not just for the amazing views but to learn about its fascinating history. The tower takes its name from the execution of Roger de Clifford, who was convicted of treason against Edward II and hanged in chains from the tower walls. Holy Trinity Church is tucked away in a small, secluded, leafy churchyard, near to the Minster. It is York’s hidden gem - a tranquil haven among the busy city streets. With 12th century foundations, but with architecture dating mostly from the 15th century, Holy Trinity is amazingly atmospheric. Now in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust, the interior has remained unchanged and unrestored for 200 years, with mediaeval stained glass and unusual Georgian box pews. There is no artificial lighting in the church so opening times may vary depending on daylight conditions. Nearby is Fairfax House, which was the winter home of Lord Fairfax, and is one of the finest Georgian town houses in England. Designed by 18th Century architect John Carr, it is an architectural masterpiece. St Mary, Bishophill Junior. The oldest and most striking part of the church is the massive West tower, which dates to the 11th century and was probably 100 years old when William the Conqueror landed; Eric Bloodaxe may have seen it. It is the only standing church tower not burnt down by William the Conqueror in 1069, or rebuilt. Dig, based in the mediaeval church of St Saviour’s which became redundant in the 1950s,is a hands-on archaeological adventure, giving kids the chance to become trainee ‘diggers’ and discover the most exciting artefacts from 2000 years of York’s history. Barley Hall is a fabulous medieval townhouse, once home to the Priors of Nostell and the Mayor of York. It is situated next to York Minster, and has been loving restored to its original splendor with exposed timber beams and stunning high ceilings. Its magnificent Great Hall has been decorated to replicate how it would have looked in 1483. All these hidden gems are situated in the city centre enabling you to take a break from shopping and to spend some time soaking up the atmosphere of these wonderful buildings.

Yorkshire is renowned for its great food and good produce, and is the largest food and beer producing region in the United Kingdom, with over 15,000 people involved in the food business. With great connections to the countryside and coast, restaurateurs’ are able to take full advantage of sourcing the best produce the region has to offer. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and pubs where you can sample good quality local food, and shops and delicatessens selling local produce. A farmers’ market is held on the last Friday of every month in Parliament Street where you can buy local produce direct from the growers, and for fresh fish, meat, vegetables and the most delicious pork pies we have ever tasted, the daily Hungate Market is the place to head to. Bettys, the world famous tea shop, is situated on the corner of Parliament Street and St Helen’s Square, and sells fabulous cakes and breads. For those on a budget and if you don’t want to queue, there are plenty of cafes offering delicious home cooked fayre in the historic centre to discover.

York’s compact size means that you can explore most of the centre of the city within a day, wandering around the Shambles, visiting museums and still have time to have a leisurely lunch and indulge in a spot of shopping if you are so inclined – definitely a perfect way to discover any city. However, if you want to really discover York’s fascinating history, we would recommend taking a walking tour and there are plenty to choose from, and all a little bit different. Step through time with White Rose Tours who run a 3 hour walking tour daily. They offer excellent, interesting tours and limit their tours to a small group. The tours are free but you are expected to tip your guide at the end of the tour a reasonable remuneration for their time and effort. During the day you will see many ghost trails advertised and two of the best are the Original Ghost Walk and The York Terror Trail. Both can supply thrills aplenty ! Please see our Ghostly Goings On page for more details- page 37.

Yorkboat, Lendal Bridge A great photographic opportunity, and chance to see the fascinating buildings, bridges and historic sights on the River Ouse in York. ... They have a range of trips to suit everyone from daytime sightseeing cruises, evening cruises, package cruises, party cruises and much more.

Yorkshire Heart Brewery, Pool Lane, YO26 8EL With 10 acres of fantastic views of vines and natural beauty, it’s not surprising that Yorkshire Heart’s tours and tastings have become extremely popular as a great day out. It is also an ideal venue for that special party, corporate entertaining or for group days out.

The York Terror Trail, 6.45pm every night from the Golden Fleece

Prepare yourself for gruesome contact with the history of some of this city’s most famous past inhabitants! For more details see pages 36/37

Yorks Chocolate Story, 3-4 Kings Square York’s Chocolate Story is an entertaining and informative guided tour through the history of York’s most famous chocolate-making families and their finest creations. You’ll also uncover a host of surprising secrets and fascinating facts behind York’s greatest chocolate products, from the Chocolate Orange to the globally famous Kit Kat.

York City Sightseeing, Various pick up points

throughout the city

York is one of the most inspiring cities to take a sightseeing bus tour in, from its exquisite architecture to the picturesque cobblestones, York will capture hearts of all ages. There are so many things to do in the historical city of York, and City Sightseeing will assist you to discover all of the major sights and attractions that this thriving city has to offer.

The Original Ghost Walk, 8pm every night at the King’s Arms Pub, Ouse Bridge

Believed to be the oldest Ghost Walk in York. For more details see pages 36/37

White Rose Tours, every morning (year round) at 11am and every afternoon

(from April to October) at 3pm. Additional tours run Fridays and Saturdays at 1pm. The tours start outside the West Entrance of York Minster (the end with the two towers), under the tree on the wide pavement opposite Cafe Concerto. Just look for the sign. Their guides are historians and history enthusiasts, and they try to keep their groups small enough that everyone feels like they have had a personal experience. The walking tours are three hours long because they believe York is a city to be savoured, not hurried. Although the trips are free, tips are always welcome!

York has been named the most haunted city in the United Kingdom and in Europe as well, with reputedly over 500 ghosts haunting the city. The most famous manifestation occurred in 1953. Harry Martindale, an apprentice plumber, was installing a new central heating system in the cellar at Treasurer’s House which is situated on the site of a Roman fort. Suddenly he had to throw down his tools and step to one side whilst he watched a battalion of Roman Soldiers march through the cellar. He described the soldiers as wearing green tunics and carrying round shields which local historians did not believe, as this did not tally with other evidence at that time. Only some years later, when another site was discovered, with findings of soldiers wearing green tunics and carrying round shields was Harry finally believed! Many shops have their own ghost; M&S has a spooky shelf stacker who reorganises shelves at night, much to the annoyance of its staff, and if you are shopping at Jack Wills beware of who is looking back at you when you admire your reflection in the dressing room mirror! Some accommodation providers have a ghost in residence too! If you want an early morning call then why not stay in the Golden Fleece where guests have reportedly been woken by the icy hand of a Second World War airman or at the Dean Court Hotel situated opposite the Minster where guests have reported hearing the slamming of doors, objects being moved around and unusual cold spots in the rooms, even in the middle of summer. For folks that just love a good yarn then a ghost walk is an essential prerequisite of a visit to York. Unsurprisingly there are as many different tours and walks as there are ghosts in this city, but two of the best are the Original Ghost Walk, run by Mark Graham, and the York Terror Trail, run by Damian Freddi. Mark started the Original Ghost Walk 33 years ago and you will find him every evening at 8pm on Ouse Bridge near the King’s Arms pub to begin the tour. He is a master of storytelling and will enthral you with his dark stories of those that lived in and haunt this city to this very day. The York Terror Trail starts at 6.45pm outside the Golden Fleece Inn on The Pavement. Damian leads the tour where you will hear creepy true stories from the old times (added with little bit of dark humour)...

Outside the city walls York’s central location and excellent transport links make it an ideal base to explore the rest of Yorkshire. Whatever your interests, your age and your budget, and whatever direction you decide to head, you will discover the diversity of England’s largest county. The Howardian Hills, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, lie only a 20 minute drive from the city. As you leave York and head northwards towards the picturesque market town of Easingwold, the hills gradually rise to the east of the A19. A relatively unknown corner of Yorkshire, it abuts the North York Moors National Park, the boundary being the River Rye. It is a beautiful and tranquil area, with pretty villages, and on a summer’s day the light cast by rolling clouds across the hills is a magical site to see.

NORTH YORK MOORS

Scarborough Castle

The North York Moors National Park is only a short drive from York and has one of the largest expanses of Moorland in the United Kingdom. This is a special place, forged by nature, shaped over generations - where peace and beauty rub shoulders with a rich history, and a warm welcome. Immerse yourself for a day in the great outdoors and explore this beautiful landscape. A day walking in the forests, cycling or horse riding across the moorland tracks is an uplifting experience. Helmsley, the only town situated within the National Park, is an ideal day out with plenty of attractions situated in and around the town, and a wonderful mixture of shops, cafes and a thriving arts centre.

COASTLINE Yorkshire boasts over 45 miles of dramatic coastline, dotted with quaint fishing villages. It stretches from the vibrant city of Hull northwards, and on to Whitby.

Scarborough is the oldest spa town in Britain, when in 1626, Yorkshire woman, Elizabeth Farrow, discovered an acid stream pouring down the cliff in South Bay and the spa resort was born. P: 40

Idyllically set in delightful woodland and formal gardens, it is a special place to visit or stay.
