Go Yorkshire North Yorkshire Moors, East Coast & The Wolds Guide

Page 1

Welcome to Go Yorkshire’s Guide for 2016 The North York Moors are characterised by their incredible beauty and a calming sense of space, solitude and tranquillity. Whatever the season, the Moors offer the perfect place to get away from it all. The spectacular cliffs and sandy coves of the North Yorkshire Coast form a dramatic backdrop to the North York Moors National Park. Ridge upon ridge of purple heather moorlands extend into the distance, while the natural beauty of secluded dales and rugged, heritage coastlines make it the ideal place to explore. The charming fishing port of Whitby has little changed since the days of its famous son, Captain Cook. With its sheer cliffs and ominous, gothic architecture, Whitby proved to be the perfect inspiration for Bram Stoker’s famous dramatic novel Dracula. For a bustling and buzzing seaside atmosphere, try Scarborough. Packed with seaside attractions, the coastal town caters for the whole family. The East Yorkshire coastline ranges from the golden splendour of some of Britain’s finest beaches to the wave pounded rocks of the East Coast’s highest cliffs at Flamborough Head. The Yorkshire Wolds, with their quaint country towns, and rolling chalk hills, provide a more gentle contrast to the drama of the Moors. The 79 mile Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail attracts thousands of visitors each year, whilst other, less adventurous, visitors prefer to be enchanted by the beauty of the scenery, the picturesque villages, market towns and historic houses. The Wolds also boasts plenty of quaint inns and fine churches and a visit to the area would be incomplete without an afternoon spent admiring the Gothic splendour of Beverley Minster with its rose windows and columns of Purbeck marble. We wish you the warmest welcome for 2016 from all the team at Go Yorkshire

If you are here for only a weekend, here are some suggestions of places to visit, our ‘hot spots’ if you like. We recommend using Ordinance Survey Maps, or the National Park produce a series of walking and cycling guide books available from the Moors National Park Centre, Sutton Bank or tourist information centres. Alternatively download their free mobile app or log on to www.northyorkmoors.org.uk

EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF A WOODLAND WALK Over a fifth of the North York Moors is covered in trees and ancient woodlands and is an ideal place to walk and look for woodland wildlife. If you are lucky you may spot a roe deer or badger, Jays and other birds are in abundance. Why not join a wildlife safari. For more information see www.yorkshirecoastnature.co.uk or call 01262 851999

EXPLORE THE COAST Walk from Boggle Hole to Robin Hood’s Bay a picturesque fishing village situated down a steep ravine. Once the haunt of smugglers it is famous for its fossils and rock pools. This can either be a linear walk or for the more energetic, a circular walk returning to Boggle Hole along the disused railway line. Further along the coast is Staithes, another beautiful village of tumbling cottages, which makes a pleasant stop for a pub lunch.

CLIMB THE HIGHEST PEAK Roseberry Topping is the famous conical peak situated at the most easterly point of the Cleveland Hills. On Christmas Day it is traditional for local people to climb to the top of the peak which is a very sociable event as many walkers carry a hip flask!

FOR THE BEST VIEW IN YORKSHIRE Walk along Sutton Bank, an easy walk for all the family and is also wheelchair accessible, it takes you along the escarpment to the famous hillside at Kilburn with the White Horse. A new cycle way has been created with bridleways and bike trails.

BURN OFF SOME ENERGY Family Fun and plenty of activities can be had at Dalby Forest with cycle and walking trails. For more information see http://www.forestry.gov.uk/dalbyforest

EASILY ACCESSIBLE Kilburn is where Master Craftsman Robert Thompson is situated and you can visit his workshops and tea room. His famous trademark is a small mouse which can be seen on his furniture and is evident in many local churches. Farndale – a beautiful valley famous for its wonderful display of daffodils in spring - you can drive or walk through the valley to see them. Hutton-le-Hole – a chocolate box village of neat mellow houses and a village green kept tidy by grazing sheep. Goathland – made famous by the television series Heartbeat, this picturesque moorland village is the terminus of the North York Moors railway.

LONG DISTANCE TRAILS If you want to explore more, the ultimate is to walk part, or all of one of the three National Trails that cross Yorkshire.

MOORS AND COAST The Cleveland Way National Trail runs in a horseshoe configuration from Helmsley along the Cleveland Hills to Saltburn and down the coast to Filey, covering 110 miles of stunning scenery where it links with the Wolds Way National Trail. For more information visit www. nationaltrail.co.uk/cleveland-way Wolds Way Trail runs from Filey which is where the Cleveland Way ends, to Hessle and covers 79 miles visit www.nationaltrail.co.uk/yorkshire-wolds-way

FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA The Coast to Coast is one of Britain’s finest long distance walking routes and was made famous by writer and illustrator Alfred Wainwright who in 1972 set out to walk from St Bees on the Cumbria coast to Robin Hood’s Bay on the Yorkshire Coast. A total of 192 miles, the route crosses three National Parks and is one of the most popular walking routes in England. For more information visit www.wainwright.org.uk

A TOWN FOR ALL SEASONS Helmsley has everything you’d expect in a quintessentially English market town: a vibrant market square, independent, specialist shops, excellent places to eat and drink, an imposing castle, friendly locals, a babbling brook, beautiful surrounding countryside... It’s got even more! A walled garden, bird of prey centre, arts centre, micro-brewery, open air swimming pool, over 50 listed buildings, a luxury spa, a nature reserve, galleries and an arts centre. Two abbey ruins, Michelin-starred restaurants, and the North York Moors National Park are on the doorstep. History & Heritage Helmsley was first settled around 3000 BC and archaeological remains show evidence of Bronze, Iron Age, Roman and Viking settlements. William the Conqueror’s half brother, Count Mortain held the lands around Helmsley and you can still visit the ruins of the Norman castle, and see ancient oak trees in Duncombe Park dating from this time. Helmsley is one of only 17 towns named in the Magna Carta. For several centuries, Helmsley’s economy relied on sheep farming, wool and weaving. The town was later developed and expanded by the Duncombe family who built Duncombe Park. A statue of William Duncombe stands in the Market Place.

micro-brewery as well as some lively pubs. Many visitors marvel at the sheer number and range of food shops and restaurants in such a small market town. Known for its fantastic ingredients and specialist food suppliers, it’s no surprise that there is an award winning fish and chip shop and there are Michelin-starred restaurants just a few miles away! Why not stay for longer? Helmsley is an ideal base for touring the North York Moors National Park and coast. Walk, ride or cycle Helmsley is where the popular 110 mile walking trail, The Cleveland Way begins. There are also beautiful walks and tracks in the surrounding woods and valleys. In early spring, carpets of snowdrops are gradually replaced by the pungent smell of wild garlic and a blanket of bluebells line the forest floor in April and May. Meadows full of wild flowers in the summer and the glow of foliage in autumn creates an ever changing landscape and is a delight to walk or ride through.

Yorkshire Hospitality at its finest! Whether you want a quick break or a more indulgent treat, Helmsley has plenty of delights. Many of Helmsley’s cosy tea rooms and cafes are housed in beautiful historic buildings with a wonderful atmosphere. Some pride themselves on offering a Yorkshire menu featuring local produce, while others are more cosmopolitan. Many have fibre optic wifi. Helmsley has its own

INTERESTING FACTS Did you know that Helmsley has its own open air swimming pool? Popular with the locals, it is only open in the summer. Helmsley is a real “honey-pot” for art collectors. Its galleries have an ever-changing range of quality art to rival the major cities with ceramics, sculpture and photography by international and local artists. Craftspeople like Keith the Stick Man, timber specialists Duncombe Sawmill and the sugar craft of Celebration Country Cake Designs are keeping crafts alive, using traditional materials and methods, with a contemporary twist. The picturesque market town of Malton has been the centre of administration for Ryedale since the Romans arrived in the first century AD. Strategically situated to defend this area on the River Derwent, it was an important halfway point between York and Scarborough and today it makes an ideal base to stay for exploring this part of Yorkshire, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Yorkshire Wolds, the Howardian Hills and the North York Moors. With only a short distance to the coast and York you can easily spend a week experiencing contrasting locations every day of the week.

CELEBRATION OF FOOD In recent years the town has reinvented itself ‘as the food capital of Yorkshire’ as a means of injecting money into the local economy and to attract their share of the millions of visitors who flock to this part of Yorkshire each year. This hidden gem of a town is often overlooked by those travelling on to the coast or moors but is well worth a detour. Jorvik Viking Centre

P: 16

Now in its eighth year, the annual May Food Festival is a major event and celebration of the bountiful supplies of food produced in this area, along with the artisan shops and top chefs that Yorkshire is famous for. A wonderful buzz descends upon the town with the market place and surrounding streets lined with stalls piled high with delicious food and Malton is transformed into food heaven. Bands and events are hosted throughout the day and evening, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. As a result of its success, there is now a game and seafood festival held in September.

“It was Antonio Carluccio who after visiting Malton first called it “Yorkshire’s Food Capital”

There is a burgeoning restaurant scene and a range of tearooms, café bars and real ale pubs and we’re proud to still have proper butchers, grocers, delis and a fishmonger. More recent additions to the town include the Malton Cookery School and a growing community of ‘Made In Malton’ producers including new breweries and artisan food producers at Talbot Yard. In addition, the town has a plethora of bespoke and independent shops alongside high street names, making for an exciting, pleasant market town.

Charles Dickens often visited Malton because of his long friendship with Charles Smithson, a solicitor in the town. The Smithson family had their offices on Chancery Lane in Malton and they also shared a practice in London. Founded in 1190, St Leonard and St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church is thought to be the oldest practising church in the country. Neighbouring Norton continues to be one of the principal centres in the country for the horse-racing industry, with many trainers and stables within and on the outskirts of the town. Horses are put through their paces at the Langton Wold and Highfield Gallops, and early risers will come across strings of horses in and around the town coming from and going to the gallops.

Come and spend a weekend shopping, eating and enjoying Yorkshire’s Food Capital!

Pickering Castle

A very warm welcome awaits you in Pickering, an attractive and historic market town positioned between the coast, forest, moors and York, Pickering is an attractive base for exploring this popular area of North Yorkshire. Pickering is a tourist centre and as such has numerous attractions and events where visitors can enjoy themselves. At the top of the sloping market place, where a busy street market takes place on Mondays, is the parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul where fifteenth century murals decorate the walls, and whose spire dominates the skyline. At the bottom of the market place is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway station where you can board the 18 mile steam railway running through the spectacular scenery of the National Park and a further 6 miles to Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. The station at Goathland has featured in the Harry Potter films and TV’s Heartbeat. Pickering castle lies to the north, a splendid example of a twelfth century motte and bailey construction, and which was once also a royal hunting lodge. The traditional Monday market, a monthly farmers’ market, a daily indoor market and car boot sales held regularly in and around the town offer excellent opportunities for bargain hunting. The local independent shops selling quality goods and in many cases local and fair-trade produce, are complemented by excellent cafes and hostelries. Pickering’s antique shops are legendary and the auction rooms offer both value and entertainment.

Church of St Peter’s & St Paul’s

The parish church of St Peter’s and St Paul’s has amazing medieval frescoes, considered some of the finest in Britain. They were painted over for many centuries and were only discovered in 1852 when work on the interior of the church uncovered them. For three weeks many people came to see them, but the vicar, being a puritanical man covered them again, where they remained hidden for a further 24 years until major refurbishment finally revealed them.

Whitby is a magical place to visit, steeped in history and oozing charm. It is a town divided into two halves by the River Esk that widens out into a busy harbour and is home to a small fishing fleet, guaranteeing that the freshest of fish is always available. Cottages with tumbling red roofs seem to spill down the hill into the old town with its cobbled streets and interesting shops. It is crowned by the ruins of the ancient abbey that dominate the town. On the north side of the harbour, the crescents of handsome Georgian houses, many converted into hotels, look out to sea. The famous whalebone arch frames the steps that descend to the harbour paying homage to Whitby’s dominance of the whaling industry of the 18th and 19th centuries. The life sized statue of Whitby’s most famous hero, Captain Cook stands proudly nearby on the headland looking out to sea. The magnitude of his epic voyages can be discovered by visiting his home, The Captain Cook Museum, in the old part of town. For those fortunate to have visited New Zealand, and to have stood on Captain Cook Beach, the achievements and bravery of this man are overwhelming and humbling. The Victorian villas that run behind the Georgian seafront are lined with B&Bs offering a warm welcome and comfortable accommodation. They back onto the beautiful Pannett Park that was bought for the benefit of the town by local solicitor and Alderman, Robert Pannett in the early 20th century. He met with so much opposition to his plans for transforming what were allotments, into a garden and art gallery for the enjoyment of local people, that it was not until after his death that his wishes were finally granted, and the garden and buildings finally created. In 1927 the foundation stone for the art gallery was laid and latterly Whitby Museum was built behind the art gallery to accommodate the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society who wanted to relocate from their cramped premises on the harbourside. Robert Pannett’s dream was finally realised. His private art collection was donated to the new gallery and the museum ensures that Whitby’s rich and historical past is preserved for future generations. However, Pannett Park is not always peaceful, as the excellent children’s play park next to the museum and gallery is often full of happy children enjoying themselves and for families it is well worth visiting.

When Prince Albert died in 1861 Queen Victoria entered into ‘severe mourning’ and would allow only jet black jewellery to be worn at court. The Victorian people followed this style and soon jet jewellery became the height of fashion. P: 30

Whitby Goth Weekend has grown over the last 17 years and is now a biannual celebration of all manner of weird and wonderful characters, music and art. The main events are held at the Whitby Spa Pavilion but during the weekend many of the local hotels and pubs put on additional live music acts. During the weekend festivities, Goths and non-Goths alike can be seen parading around the town in amazing costumes creating a wonderful and friendly atmosphere to be enjoyed by all. It’s not exactly a secret, but it is a surprise to some – the North York Moors National Park has an amazing stretch of coastline, one on which smugglers, sea captains, miners and dinosaurs have all left their mark. There are 26 miles of sea cliffs, sandy bays, picturesque harbours and ageold fishing villages – not to mention another 20 miles or so of local coast outside the National Park boundary between Filey and Saltburn. The stretch of coastline which runs from Staithes in the North to Flamborough in the south is about 60 miles long and is known as the Jurassic, Fossil or Dinosaur Coast. As you can imagine by the name, it is a source of fossils dating back over 120 million years. In Whitby whole dinosaur footprints can be seen on the beach but over the whole area you can find a variety of fossils including prehistoric fish, lizards and flora.

Why not take one of the Fossil Finding trips organised by Whitby Fossil Shop, “Natural Wonders” on Grape Lane. Ideal for families and beginners. Trips are tide dependant so specific dates only, usually mornings with varying start times. Please see www.fossils-uk.com for more information.

The Ravenscar Trail is at the southern most end of Robin Hood’s Bay and is a treasure trove of fossils but is not suitable for small children due to the vagaries of the tides and the steepness of the cliff trails! Seven and a half miles of coastline around Whitby is home to Whitby Jet, the fossilized remains of the Araucaria or Monkey Puzzle tree from the mid Jurassic period. There are many workshops, heritage centres and shops dedicated to the elusive gemstone in Whitby and many happy hours can be spent contemplating the history of jet and also perhaps choosing a memento of your visit!

BEAUTIFUL BIG SKIES, V SHAPED VALLEYS, LONG SANDY BEACHES, AND MOVIE STARS! A relatively unknown corner of Yorkshire, is the North Yorkshire Wolds and the section of the East Coast which stretches from Bridlington down to Spurn Head, the distinctive spit of land that forms the north part of the Humber Estuary. It is a beautiful and unspoilt part of England which inspired David Hockney to create a new series of large-scale landscape paintings that were showcased in two hugely successful exhibitions in 2012 at the London Academy, and Museum Ludwig, Cologne in Germany.

Wolds Way Lavender

Beverley Minster

Burton Agnes Hall is an Elizabethan Manor House, situated in the village of Burton Agnes, near Driffield. Built by Sir Henry Griffith in 1601–10 to designs attributed to Robert Smythson, it is one of the finest houses of its period in England. The Deep – an excellent day out and will thrill and entertain the whole family. John Bull World of Rock – No visit to Bridlington is complete without visiting John Bull. Watch the secrets of rock and chocolate production unfold before your very eyes! Wolds Way Lavender – Situated ½ mile from the Wolds Way Trail, this is a wonderful and relaxing place to visit. The 12 acre site is planted with over six acres of lavender ranging from rich hues of purple to the purest white. Beverley Minster - larger than one third of all English cathedrals and regarded as a gothic masterpiece by many. Admission is free. P: 40

The Deep

MORE TO EXPLORE If lying on the beach is not for you, then why not have a quiet day out exploring the stunning countryside. The Yorkshire Wolds present amazing chalk landscapes with dry v shaped valleys, stunning wildlife and ancient villages. The Wolds Way is an 80 mile trail, stretching from Filey in the North, down to Hessle on the Humber near Kingston upon Hull in the south. Comedienne, Jo Brand recently strode along the Hessle and North Ferriby leg as part of her “Hell of a Walk” in aid of Sport Relief. East Yorkshire is known as the Yorkshire Natural Triangle. From puffins at Flamborough Cliffs, to mega flocks and rarities at Spurn, across to breeding avocets and other waders at the North Cave Wetlands, this ‘Triangle’ is possibly one of the very best wildlife destinations in the UK - yet very few people realise just how great it is!

BRIDLINGTON The sea port and tourist town, Bridlington, where David Hockney spent much of his formative years and still has a house, is a seaside gem, well known for its shellfish, long sandy beaches and plenty of good quality accommodation. It dates back to Roman times when it was believed to be used as a Roman Station. More recently it has been the location for the filming of the new Dad’s Army film which debued this spring, particularly hosting Corporal Jones’ butchers shop, The Royal Oak and Private Frazer’s funeral parlour, whilst Captain Mainwaring’s office is filmed in the East Riding Theatre in nearby Beverley . John Bull’s World of Rock is at Carnaby, only a short bus ride from Bridlington. It is a great day out for all ages and you even get the opportunity of personalising your own stick of rock. Following in the movie theme, it was the location for some scenes in the 2011 series Sugartown.

FOR THE CITY LOVER Alternatively, the market town of Beverley is a Georgian treasure, and boasts a fine selection of upmarket shops, both independent as well as the quality high street chains, quirky cafes and fine restaurants. The jewel in the crown, which has attracted pilgrims and visitors for centuries is the magnificent Beverley Minster. It is one of the largest and finest parish churches in England and rivals York Minster for its architecture and furnishings. The majestic Minster rises up before you as you travel across the flat plains from York, beckoning you to this historic market town. If you wish to venture further south or are catching the ferry to Zeebrugge, Hull, the 2017 UK City of Culture is well worth a visit and has transformed itself in recent years with a vibrant Marina and Museum Quarter. Hull is home to one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world, The Deep. As well as housing up to 3,500 fish including a stunning pair of Green Sawfish, a colony of Gentoo Penguins and also some spectacular sharks, the aquarium has new residents, young zebra sharks.

Whitby Abbey

Scarborough Castle During the civil war Scarborough Castle was under siege for 12 months and then taken by the parliamentary army. There are some stone cannon balls on display at the castle. Many interesting fossils have been found in the Whitby area including entire skeletons of pterodactyls. Whitby was awarded “Best Seaside Resort 2006”, by Which? Holiday magazine. Michel Faber’s novel, The Hundred and Ninety Nine Steps is set in Whitby. Whitby was the site of the Rohilla disaster of 30 October 1914, when the hospital ship Rohilla was sunk (either by running aground, or hitting a mine; accounts differ) within sight of shore just off Whitby. Eighty-five people lost their lives in the disaster; most of them are buried in the churchyard at Whitby. In 1829 Anne Bronte died and was buried in Scarborough. The 100 year old Peasholm Park has a boating lake and you can hire boats including ones designed as swans to enjoy the water. Over 50,000 visitors come to see the small yellow daffodils every year in Farndale. The banks of the River Dove are covered with “Lenten Lilies”; these are the true wild daffodils native to Great Britain. William Wilberforce, an active campaigner against slavery was born in Hull. Rievaulx Abbey was Yorkshire’s first Cistercian Abbey. At its peak it had 150 monks and 500 lay brothers and farmed 14,000 sheep on the moors. The monks became rich from selling the wool to Europe. The UK’s biggest recorded earthquake was at Dogger Bank in 1931, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale. Widespread damage occurred on the Eastern coast near Filey. The earthquake was felt down south and even caused Dr Crippen’s head to fall off at Madame Tussaud’s. Mr Bernard Harland of Pickering was responsible for growing one of the largest known gooseberries in 1994. The Yellow Woodpepper Gooseberry, weighed 31drams 22 grains, won first prize at the Egton Gooseberry Fair.

The ghost of Katherine (Anne) Griffith, who died at Burton Agnes Hall in 1620, is reputed to have haunted the Queen’s State Bedroom. Anne Griffith was the youngest of the three daughters of Sir Henry Griffith who built the Hall. Anne thought that it would be the most beautiful house ever built. When it was almost finished Anne went one afternoon to visit nearby friends, but she was attacked and robbed by ruffians. She was brought home to Burton Agnes but sadly died soon afterwards. Whilst delirious, she told her sisters that she would never rest unless part of her could remain in ‘our beautiful home as long as it shall last’. They promised that when she was dead her head should be severed and preserved in the Hall forever, however when Anne died, she was buried in the churchyard. Ghostly manifestations followed. Remembering Anne’s dying words, the sisters spoke with the vicar and the grave was exhumed. The skull was brought into the house and so long as it was undisturbed, the Hall was peaceful and untroubled. Once it was thrown away, another time it was buried in the garden, but always the manifestations reoccurred. The skull is still in the house, probably walled up in the Great Hall. Now she can watch over ‘her beautiful home’ forever.
