annual report
elmwood franklin school 2005
2006
Elmwood Franklin is a school that emphasizes high academic achievement, good study skills and positive character development.
We set high standards for each child with whom we work, then give support to enable him/her to meet these expectations. We expect our students throughout their years here to achieve success in becoming selfmotivated and in assuming responsibility for their actions. The early years of education are crucial in an individual’s life. Our role is to provide each student with the basic skills to learn effectively and the fundamental elements of knowledge which will become the foundation of all subsequent learning. Learning how to learn,
developing an enthusiasm for acquiring knowledge and cultivating a lively curiosity during these years sets a life-long pattern of sound attitudes. At Elmwood Franklin, we value an atmosphere of genuine respect and courtesy between student and student, adult and student and adult and adult. We not only set a positive tone to support our students but also, we encourage faculty, administration and staff throughout their time at Elmwood Franklin to develop themselves professionally with financial assistance from the school.
In delivering an educational program to further development of the whole child, Elmwood Franklin stresses the following • To be a school in which academic excellence exists in a supportive atmosphere so our students are well prepared for their high school in terms of academic and character growth. • To be a school in which children develop confidence in themselves, demonstrate respect for others, and assume responsibility for their own actions.
In pursuit of its main goals through the following objectives, Elmwood Franklin will • Continue a traditional academic program with emphasis on learning how to learn, developing good study and work habits, and fostering creative and independent thinking.
and high personal qualifications to serve as effective teachers and as caring adults. • Communicate frequently with parents to foster a realistic understanding of their children’s academic progress and overall development.
• Provide a varied curriculum with extra curricular offerings to enrich the education of all students.
• Continue to support the educational program by providing well-maintained, well-equipped facilities.
• Maintain a cohesive faculty of outstanding professional ability
• Enroll a student body that is reflective of our diverse community.

from the
headmaster As the new head of school and a parent of two new Elmwood Franklin students, I am sincerely impressed at the support that the school receives from its many different constituencies. The strength of giving is a most important and telling measure of a strong school community, one that indicates commitment to the school’s mission, to the work of its faculty, and to the well-being of its students. Thank you for your generosity. It is because of your support of our students and faculty that the school is able to continue to provide a first-rate education. A time of transition is a perfect time for an institution to take stock, recognize what it does well and examine areas in which improvement might be in order. With a fresh set of eyes, I have a unique opportunity to reflect back to the community what I see. The strengths of the school are very clear: • A dedicated and inspiring faculty, committed to the growth and well-being of each child; • An academic and extracurricular program that provides each student with the opportunity to stretch themselves in the traditional academic areas, the arts, and athletics, and that also stresses the importance of hard work and positive character development; • An excellent facility, suited to the needs of our students’ academic and developmental needs; (Very few independent lower and middle schools can boast of a theatre like the one our students enjoy daily, for example.) • Families committed to the mission of the school who support our work with their children through generous giving and countless hours of volunteer work; • Innovative thinking that brought about Achieve and a new faculty compensation plan; • Stable and thoughtful stewardship by the board for many years and inspiring leadership 8

from the
board president About six years ago, I sat down with Keith Frome and Robin Sadler, EFS Board Chair at the time, to plan the school’s development activities and prepare the materials for the AEIOU: Advancing Excellence In Our Universe campaign, which we were about to undertake. As is the case with many endeavors that end up accomplishing a great deal, it seems as if the campaign commenced on a wing and a prayer. EFS had never attempted such a large fundraising effort in the past, and frankly, we were not sure where all of this money would come from. As you can see looking around the school’s beautiful new facilities today, the generosity of the EFS family was overwhelming. Now I look at the names and numbers presented here in this Annual Report and I see that trait has not changed. It seems that whenever we ask for support—and we never do it lightly—our donors realize the importance of giving to Elmwood Franklin School. I remember that as we prepared funding requests for the AEIOU campaign, we spent a good deal of time elaborating our case for donor support, listing numerous rationales. 10
While I certainly believe that all of these reasons were and remain true, the message every donor, large and small, should hear most clearly is that their generosity helps gives wings to dreams. Although there are many facets of an EFS education, over the years as a parent, I have come to understand the true gift of an Elmwood Franklin education, the “wings”, confidence and courage, needed to pursue ones dreams and the compassion to support others in the pursuit of their dreams. To me this is a powerful gift to give, one that I wish every child could have, and I thank each of our many donors for all you have done to give our students wings, now and in the future.
Sincerely,
Alice F. Jacobs

Ninety-eight students received a total of $610,000 in tuition assistance (26% of enrollment). Of the total amount of tuition assistance awarded, $88,140 was given to new students entering the school and the remaining $521,860 was awarded to families already a part of the school community.
parent alumni council council The Parent Council serves as a support group to the school and as a resource for all members of the school community. It also plans educational and social events. All parents or guardians of students attending the school are members and are encouraged to participate. At each grade level there are parent representatives who support class activities. Through the year the Parent Council sponsors fundraising and community initiatives such as the book fair, box tops sales, the ice cream social, the speakers series, and the fall family picnic.
The Alumni Council continued its work to develop, maintain, and strengthen the relationship between Elmwood Franklin School and its alumni. The Alumni Council is creating more and more ways for alums to stay involved — with new endeavors and events that aren’t just about fundraising, but about maintaining meaningful relationships. We at EFS are grateful to these dedicated alumni for their committed efforts on behalf of our school.

volunteer recognition Here’s a riddle: Entering a very cold, dark room, you are presented with the choice of a fireplace, a wood stove, or a lantern. What would you light first? A match, of course. Nothing happens without a spark. At Elmwood Franklin, we have so many volunteers who by donating their time and talents provide a spark that lights and warms the entire school. A volunteer recognition breakfast held May 31 paid tribute to our community of energetic volunteers. The Unsung Hero Award, an award that honors those individuals who are “everywhere, doing everything,” at all times was presented to Jackie Spangenthal and Andrea Kuettel. Jackie has volunteered in numerous ways, helping tag auction items, organizing the library, assisting with teacher treats, fundraising for Parent Council, shuttling kids back and forth for athletic contests and fieldtrips, and much more. Besides volunteering for Book Fair, Andrea took on the challenge this year of coordinating all of the acquisition divisions for the auction. Andrea is also 38
a Board member and serves on our development committee and our recently formed planned giving committee. Alison Keane and Archie Glick were recognized as Annual Fund Volunteers of the Year. Together, they led a group of 23 volunteers to raise over $280,000 in Annual Fund dollars for EFS—the highest sum ever raised. Parent Council Service Awards were presented to Nina Cascio, Laura Mangan and Lori Bassett. Nina and Laura oversaw the 2005-2006 Parent Council Speaker Series, which presented Dr. Michael Thompson, author of The Pressured Child, among a host of other speakers. Lori was honored for her role as Parent Council president. In addition to overseeing big events like the fall family picnic and book fair, Lori worked with her executive committee (Vice President Cathy Alsheimer, Secretary Lisa Hotung, Treasurer Kathleen Loree and Room Rep Coordinator Joanne Brannen) and many, many parents to continually give back to our school.

Auction 2006 chairs Janet DiMichele, Kate Foley and Sue Liptak were commended for the many hours of planning and orchestrating that go into producing the auction. Janet, Kate and Sue headed a crew of 100+ volunteers to surpass this year’s goal of netting $173,000 by more than $10,000. Lauren Fix was recognized for “going the extra mile” with the car raffle portion of the auction. Former auction chairs Pam Catipovic and Millie Toy were honored for their invaluable support and contributions. Appreciation was also given to the co-chairs of the faculty committee: Pete Johnson, Linda Lanham, Jenna Piazza, and Alyssa Schwabe. Also recognized for her contributions was library volunteer Mary Frank.
