Annual Fund Campaign Monies raised by the Annual Fund Campaign support our very mission by ensuring that EFS continues to provide a full spectrum of exceptional programs for our students, keep tuition as affordable as possible, retain top-notch faculty and staff, and remain the first-choice school for hundreds of families who want the best education for their children.
AEIOU Campaign Beginning in 2001 with the first pledge to the AEIOU campaign, funds raised have made an enormous and valuable impact on the school’s learning environment by renovating much of the building (including the state-of-the-art Johnston Theatre), increasing the scholarship endowment, and establishing a teacher salary endowment.
Dining Room Campaign Completed in early 2008, the Dining Room Campaign increased square footage and the occupancy rate and improved the look and feel of the space, creating a more enjoyable dining experience for students and for special functions and other activities.
Auction The school’s primary fundraising event, the Auction generates almost $200,000 annually during an evening of silent and live auctions with dinner and drinks in an unforgettable theme-based atmosphere.

From the Head of School T O N Y F E AT H E R S T O N
A S I LO O K BAC K O N T H E PA S T Y E A R I find there are many highlights to report: new curriculum was developed; games were won; academic and life lessons were taught and, more importantly, learned; lifelong friendships were formed; musical and theater performances were cheered by family and friends; and students demonstrated their caring hearts by helping each other, their families, and their teachers without being asked or expecting thanks. Of course, this is what we’ve come to expect at Elmwood Franklin School. We have also come to expect commitment to the school through the financial support of many people: parents, alumni, Board members, alumni parents, grandparents, and other friends of the school. Thank you to all of you who make it possible for Elmwood Franklin School to continue its tradition of excellence. I’d especially like to thank our current parents, of whom 91 percent participated in the 20072008 Annual Fund, a record in recent history.

Among the projects tackled over the past year, the reaccreditation self-study was by far the biggest. Every ten years, Elmwood Franklin is asked to examine all aspects of the program and produce a 100+ page document which is reviewed by the New York Association of Independent Schools, and it is followed up with a three-day visit to school by a team of 10 educators. Our visiting team will be at EFS in October. During the last school year we looked at each academic discipline and all policies and procedures and included voices of teachers, students, alumni, and parents. The first thing we were charged with doing was examining, rewriting, if necessary, and affirming the school’s mission. The mission is at the center of everything we do at Elmwood Franklin. Although mission statements are sometimes viewed as static and pie-in-the-sky, we don’t see ours that way. The EFS mission is a living document; it captures what we do, who we are, our history and our future. The trick is to do this in a few words and to make it accessible to all. As we started to look into the mission, we realized that it hadn’t been updated in about 15 years. Further, most agreed that it was too wordy and abstract, especially for our students to fully understand and embrace. After many hours of writing, reviewing, editing, and more editing, a group made up of faculty,
administrators, Board members, and parents made a formal proposal to the Board for the revised mission statement and a new statement of commitment that elucidates how we propose to carry out the mission. Elmwood Franklin School prepares students for success in life is how it begins. Please take a few minutes to read the full mission on the first page of this Annual Report. I hope you agree that it captures the historical and continued commitment to academic excellence, character development, and the support necessary for each student to achieve to the best of her/his ability, and that it strikes the right balance of tradition and innovation that is at the heart of what makes EFS special. As we enter the next 10-year chapter of the Elmwood Franklin School story, I thank you again for all that you have done to support the work of our faculty and the success of our students. It is only because of the support of many people over many years that EFS is able to deliver on its mission.
Thank you.

Every gift matters. Elmwood Franklin’s exceptional learning environment comes, as we all know, at a cost. We would not be able to provide the educational experience we do without the charitable support of our constituents— tuition rates would simply be too high. Instead, to meet the costs of running the school every year, we depend on the financial
support of our alumni, current parents and parents of alumni, grandparents of current and former students, current and former faculty and staff, and other friends of the school. When combined, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and operating expenses—a difference of more than $3,000 per student!

Admissions Report Enrollment remains quite stable, with the school filled to capacity at 374 students. After graduating 34 eighth grade students in 2007, we enrolled 50 new students, keeping the school fully enrolled. Families continue to come to EFS from all over Western New York—some from as far away as Boston, Colden, Derby, Elma, Medina, Strykersville and Wheatfield, while others live as close as two houses down from the school.

Parent Council 20 07 - 20 0 8
Is there a more involved, more enthusiastic, more caring group than our parents? Probably not—and the many contributions of the EFS Parent Council show it. From picnics to book fairs, teacher treats to speaker series, room reps to family fun, the Parent Council serves as a support group to the school and as a resource for all members of the school community. All parents or guardians of students attending the school are members and are encouraged to participate. We sincerely appreciate our parents’ involvement and support.

Alumni Council 20 07 - 20 0 8
At Elmwood Franklin, we think our graduates are too special to just let go and never hear from again. And our former students agree—the foundations that they build at EFS often have lasting meaning throughout their lives. The Alumni Council works to maintain a relationship of mutual benefit between the school and its alumni. Its objectives are to maintain communication with alumni, keep them informed and involved in the school, solicit their social and financial support, and to share their news and accomplishments with the EFS community. We appreciate the efforts of these dedicated alumni on behalf of our school.

Volunteer Recognition Supporting Elmwood Franklin can be done in a number of ways—financial donations are one way, of course, but volunteerism is another important and valuable resource to our school and our mission. In May, Tony Featherston and Julie Berrigan welcomed many of Elmwood Franklin’s legion of volunteers to a breakfast reception to give special recognition to a few and heartfelt appreciation to all. T H E U N S U N G H E RO AWA R D The Unsung Hero Award, an award that honors those individuals who are “everywhere, doing everything,” was presented to Missy Cleary (at left) and Kathleen Monomokoff Loree (below). Whether is is Parent Council related, Auction related, Room Rep related...you name it, both Missy and Kathleen have done it. And they have done it well, with the most sincere enthusiasm and passion. Missy’s true expertise is the Class Gift section of the Auction. She works with almost every class to create a very unique and sought-after work of art that becomes the class’ donation to the Auction. Missy’s creativity is unmatched, and her energy is contagious. Kathleen works tirelessly behind the scenes of almost every event held at EFS. From the Book Fair to the Auction, she brings productive and clever ideas to the table every time to make each event better than before. Missy and Kathleen have touched every corner of the school and have our sincere appreciation for all they do.

Russell A. Anderson I N F O N D M E M O RY O F
Russell A. Anderson became headmaster of Elmwood Franklin School in 1956 and was commended throughout his 23 years of service to the school for his outstanding leadership and personal involvement in all aspects of the school. Elmwood Franklin owes much to Mr. Anderson, who will be remembered for the legacy of his tenure—a refurbished facility, a refined and well-rounded curriculum, stable enrollment and a healthy financial state—that continues to shape our school today. We invited the EFS community to contribute to a memorial book that shares memories and tributes from those who worked, studied, or volunteered with Mr. Anderson at Elmwood Franklin. This book was given to his family during a tribute service held in the Johnston Theatre in June. We are pleased to share some of those memories on the following pages.

Annual Fund Campaign WO RT H YO U R S U P P O RT
This year’s Annual Fund campaign wasn’t just worth your support—it’s worth your applause! That’s because the Annual Fund Cabinet, led by co-chairs Jennifer Bronstein ’74, Shashi Davae, and Elizabeth Duryea Maloney ’71, with a new focus on increasing participation, managed to bring the parent participation rate to an astounding 91%—a huge milestone for Elmwood Franklin! As we all know, the Annual Fund supports our students, our faculty, and our very mission. In fact, annual giving is an important source of revenue for all the resources essential to the Elmwood Franklin experience—from the classroom to the library, from the computer lab to the playing field, from the theatre stage to the art studio, from Prep to the eighth grade. We are pleased to report this year’s total of $261,111— an impressive sum attained collectively by our 768 donors. Some are current parents, some are alumni parents, some are alumni, some are faculty, some are grandparents, but all of them are generous and valuable. So while the Annual Fund is worth your support, the many individuals listed in this report are worth our most heartfelt appreciation.

ADVANCING EXCELLENCE IN OUR UNIVERSE
The AEIOU Campaign, chaired by Alice Jacobs and Robin Sadler, was launched with a threepronged objective: to raise the substantial funds necessary for ensuring the future of endowed scholarship opportunities, competitive teacher compensation, and extensive capital improvements.
SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT The Scholarship Endowment Fund generates additional revenue each year for our tuition assistance program, provides new scholarships to deserving students, and establishes partnerships with other grant-making institutions to help subsidize tuition costs.
T E A C H E R S A L A RY E N D O W M E N T Elmwood Franklin recognizes the necessity of recruiting and retaining strong, dedicated faculty members—and competitive compensation is an important part of achieving this goal. The Teacher Salary Endowment Fund allows Elmwood Franklin to preserve and enhance one of its most valuable assets.
BUILDING FUND In keeping with initiatives outlined in the campaign’s strategic plan, we have made extraordinary strides toward creating an environment where students and faculty can excel together. Completed renovations include the construction of: • an integrated performing arts center, featuring the state-of-the-art Johnston Theatre and new music rooms; • a well-resourced art studio; • an expanded Upper School science center; • an enhanced Upper School mathematics suite; • renovated foreign language rooms. With the many achievements of this timely campaign, Elmwood Franklin School now stands ready to confront the challenges of the 21st century.
