Brooke Muggia describes herself as a happily married mother of four children. Like many, she’s into things like music, dance, art, the outdoors, organic cooking, yoga, meditation, and, everybody’s favorite, having fun. But unlike some others, she’s made some lofty local and global priorities for herself and her family: promoting peace, fighting poverty and homelessness, supporting education, defending the environment, and preserving clean water. After exploring careers in finance, fashion, and the art and antique worlds, Brooke decided that her true passion was community service and social justice issues. This work has brought her to Boston’s inner city, New Orleans, Tanzania, South Africa, and has connected her to the people of Indonesia and Haiti. As she addressed Elmwood Franklin’s graduating class, Brooke shared some of the lessons she’s learned about having a dream, having a heart, and
A N N UA L R E P O RT 2011/2012
having a meaningful life—the key to each of them, as it turns out, is sharing them with others. Below is an excerpt from her speech. “It was not long ago that our lives looked very similar. At 14, I walked these halls, I sat in these same chairs at assembly, I won blue and red ribbons in the long jump at Field Day, I was a member of the Gray team and I experienced this community of caring on such a deep level. I went on to high school, college, and then moved to Boston and

I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU A STORY ABOUT A YOUNG MAN NAMED SUHYAL, A VERY TALENTED POET, BRILLIANT, SEPARATED FROM HIS FAMILY, HOMELESS. TO THIS DAY, WE STILL DON’T KNOW HOW HE ENDED UP ON THE STREETS. WE NEVER ASKED, BECAUSE IT DIDN’T REALLY MATTER. started living a comfortable life similar to what I had always known but just 500 miles away. I felt blessed with this life because it had served me well so far. But my heart ached for something more—I wasn’t sure what. Then I had this “ah-ha!” moment. I needed to be connected to a larger slice of this planet, something bigger than myself, to learn more about myself through connecting with others unlike, or ironically, very much like me. I decided that now was the time to find a way to be of service to others. I called the local food pantries and service organizations, but the responses really surprised me: “Your kids need to be 16,” “You need to be trained at the hospital for at least one year,” “Sorry, there is a long waitlist.” We decided to take matters into our own hands. We slapped peanut butter on one side of the bread and jelly on the other. We drew colorful messages on brown paper bags, threw in some apples, jumped in the car and drove to downtown Boston. We opened up our bags and our hearts to the homeless people on the benches who were too scared to go to shelters. We all shared our stories. We met Jae, who had just graduated from MIT University. He wasn’t able to find a job and couldn’t afford his college loan payments. We met Cleveland, who had watched his father get lynched in the South when he was seven. We met John, who had lost both parents in Hurricane Katrina when he was just your age,
14
and who was walking from Boston to Mississippi to make his way back home after a long battle with drug abuse. And we met Min, who couldn’t go to a shelter because her cat wasn’t allowed and she couldn’t bear to leave him. I was suddenly struck so deeply as I realized that these were the same people that I had passed day after day, never looking them in the eye, for I was in a hurry or maybe ashamed that I was too scared to see into their souls. This really simple exchange soon became known as “Sandwiches for the Soul,” and fifteen years later, we still make our way downtown and have made many friends along the way. We have watched them and helped them in small ways. Many were unable to get jobs because they didn’t have addresses—so we said they could use ours and gave them character references. So simple and easy to do for us … now a chance for them! For what really matters is not the “haves” or the “have-nots” in this world, it is what we have together. I would like to tell you a story about a young man named Suhyal, a very talented poet, brilliant, separated from his family, homeless. To this day, we still don’t know how he ended up on the streets. We never asked, because it didn’t really matter. One day I had an extra seat at a dinner for a charity event. Tickets were very expensive and we had a cancellation at our table only five hours before the event was to start. I thought of inviting
E L M WO O D F R A N K L I N S C H O O L
Suhyal. He stood out to me because he was always looking out for his other homeless friends. When material possessions arrived, he would say “Richie, you’re bald, you take the hat,” or “Artie, you’re always cold, you take the blanket.” Suhyal agreed to come but then called back moments later and said, “I can’t go. I don’t have anything to wear. My white shirt has a hole in it, and my blazer is shiny and wrinkled.” I told him, give me your measurements and one hour. I went to work with my friends and pulled together a killer outfit. I threw in some of my husband’s ties and headed to the shelter. I ran in with the clothes and he looked at me and cried. Then he spent 45 minutes putting himself together. Meanwhile, I am thinking, he is taking longer than I do to get ready! But what I was forgetting was that he too cares about self-respect and dignity. He has preferences too, just like we all do. Suhyal’s favorite color is sky blue, he doesn’t like turkey, he’s allergic to wool, he loves classical music, and Maya Angelou is his favorite poet—all things that we have learned as he graciously accepts or declines our donations over the years. So we get to the dinner and Suhyal is the best dressed man in the room. He sees Will, my husband, who winks at him and jokes “nice tie.” Now, this is where it gets real for me. We are not seated at the same table. I panic. How could I explain? And as Suhyal sits down, he places his hands to his heart, closes his eyes and says
A N N UA L R E P O RT 2011/2012
grace for the food in front of him. At that moment, I am struck noticing the 300 other people in the room busily checking their cell phones, talking but maybe not really even listening to the person next to them, and thinking about all the things on their to-do lists. And suddenly, the entire room becomes silent in my mind. And I place my own hands to my heart, close my eyes and say a grace as well. One I surely will never forget. For Suhyal had just taught me another lesson in gratitude. I look over again and he gives me a thumbs-up and mouths “beef tenderloin … holy cow!” I smiled and agreed. That night Suhyal met someone who helped him get a job at Dunkin’ Donuts, and now, years later, he is a barista at Starbucks and rents his own bedroom. I texted him and asked him his words of advice for your graduating class. He replied: What you think of yourself is more important than what the entire world may label you as.”

Katie Wilton Peterson ’85
The Elmwood Franklin community sadly acknowledges the death of Katie Wilton Peterson ’85, who passed away February 26, 2012, after a year-long battle with breast cancer. With degrees in education and culinary arts, Katie combined her love of teaching and of cooking through a cooking class enterprise known as “Cooking with Katie,” and an instructional cookbook for tweens entitled You’re the Cook! A Guide to Mixing It Up in the Kitchen. She believed that teaching cooking to middle-school-age children helps to instill important values such as confidence, creativity, responsibility, and generosity. Exemplifying those attributes herself, Katie was an enthusiastic supporter of EFS, donating cooking classes to the Auction and appearing for a book-signing and benefit in 2006. She was a resident of Topsfield, Massachusetts. In addition to her husband David and her daughter Amanda, Katie is survived by her parents, Frank and Annette ’48 Wilton, and her four siblings, Frank ’77, Annette ’80, Lucy ’82, and Ben ’87.

FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT L I Z D U RY E A M A L O N E Y ’ 70
For the last three years I have had the honor of serving as chair of the Board of Trustees at Elmwood Franklin School, and the privilege of working with a passionate and committed group of board members who give generously of their time, talent, and treasure in support of our school. It has been a rewarding experience, and I am grateful for having had the opportunity to give back to a school I love so dearly. EFS parent Matt Enstice has agreed to serve as Board Chair, effective July 1, and welcomed several new trustees to the Board this fall. Matt has been a very involved board member and I am confident he will do his best to guide the school moving forward. I am also extremely pleased to welcome Dr. Keller-Cogan to our community as our new Head of School. Meg is already hard at work and her enthusiasm for the school is infectious. As I step down, I have been asked to share my thoughts on the school, its progress and its future. It is no secret that the last several years have seen significant changes in elementary education, and I am proud to say that Elmwood Franklin has remained in the forefront in terms of its program. The increased use of technology and a more global approach to environmental,
24

political and social issues has required that we teach our children new skills in order to allow them to compete successfully in the 21st century. Elmwood Franklin has met this challenge by upgrading its technology infrastructure and implementing innovative new programs in each grade. Smartboards and iPads are used in nearly every classroom, encouraging technology use and collaborative learning. Young students in Prep I and II are now connecting via computer with children from around the world, sharing experiences, learning about each other’s cultures and becoming global citizens. Our Admissions Office is using social media to reach out to prospective families, and the Development Office is reaching out to alumni around the world online via Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube in an effort to keep in touch with our EFS families as they spread out around the globe.
and the administration continue to work together to finalize plans for a Prep and Lower school renovation. A new multipurpose learning lab is also planned and will be a centerpiece of the project, allowing more room for the hands-on exploration that is so effective in engaging younger students. Building will begin once funds have been raised. Expansion and renovation of the Prep area of the building, which is long overdue, will allow EFS to complete the last leg of a multi-year renovation program for the Lower School, significantly enhancing the primary entry point for most of our new students. Finally, while change is required to keep current and relevant in the world of education, I would like to point out that our school’s mission has served us well and continues to be relevant: “Elmwood Franklin School prepares children for success in life. By setting
Building plans are well underway. As chair of the Building and Grounds Committee, Matt has been responsible for overseeing the development of the plans for the Prep-area renovation/ build-out. Education” appearing in Independent School magazine last fall, Chad Barnett, Head of the Linsly School in West Virginia, cites the results of an Independent School Association of the Central States Schools community survey involving 325 independent schools in 15 states, which revealed that independent school parents are most likely to recommend their school to others because of its caring environment and its commitment to character and values. As someone who has been a student, a parent, a volunteer, and a board member at EFS, this does not surprise me. Over the last seven years, I have spoken with many Elmwood Franklin graduates both locally and around the country, and their comments and memories are always about the wonderful teachers they had, the valuable lessons they learned, and the strong foundation and character education that they received while at EFS.
high standards for scholarship and character and providing a nurturing and supportive environment, Elmwood Franklin fosters the development of confident, independent, self-motivated learners with a strong sense of responsibility to self and community.”
I believe it is this commitment to high standards and character coupled with the caring and support provided by our school community that breeds success among our graduates. It is what our mission statement dictates, and I believe it will continue to be the foundation for the success of our school.

Volunteer Recognition “No
act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.”
–Aesop
Giving isn’t limited to money—acts of kindness, both small and large, have a special value of their own. In May, Head of School Tony Featherston and Director of Development Monique Watts welcomed Elmwood Franklin’s many volunteers to a breakfast reception to give special recognition to a few and heartfelt thanks to all.

Susie Green ’62 receiving The Margaret G. Swift Service Award
Liz Maloney ’70 and Donna Muscarella received the Unsung Hero Award from Head of School Tony Featherston in May. Margaret Rogers, not pictured, also received the award.
T H E M A RG A R E T G . S W I F T S E R V I C E A WA R D Named in honor of its first recipient, the Margaret G. Swift Service Award was established in 1989 as a way to recognize outstanding members of the EFS community. In October, former head of Lower School Susie Green ’62 was presented the award in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to Elmwood Franklin.
T H E U N S U N G H E RO A WA R D The Unsung Hero Award, an award that honors those individuals who are “everywhere, doing everything,” was presented to Liz Maloney ’70, Donna Muscarella, and Margaret Rogers. Liz has likely walked through the doors of Elmwood Franklin more than 10,000 times over the past forty years. Liz has worn many hats at EFS and worn them so well: member of Class of 1970, active parent, Annual Fund volunteer and chair, Alumni Council member, trustee and Board president. She has made a lasting impact on this school and the many people she has worked with through her efforts. Margaret has volunteered weekly in the library for more than six years, shelving books and straightening up, and even assisting students from time to time. Joan Good affectionately refers to her as “the library ninja.” She comes in and works quietly in the background, often unseen. Sometimes the only way we know that she has been in is by the straightened book stacks. Margaret’s devotion to the library and the students is inspiring, and we are so very thankful for her hard work and dedication. Donna is like the Energizer bunny—she never stops going! From the very first parent night right up to receiving her award, Donna has been sharing with parents the importance of giving to EFS’s Annual Fund campaign. For the past three years, Donna has seen

the Development Department through many transitions and has helped to raise nearly $1 million for Elmwood Franklin. As a trustee, Donna helps to ensure that every board member understands the importance of the programs here at EFS and how critical it is to have the support of all our EFS community.
PA R E N T C O U N C I L Parent Council officers Mary Frank, President; Sheila Walier, Vice President; Mia Acharya, Treasurer; Heather Jermak, Secretary; and Gretchen Galvin, Room Rep Coordinator were thanked for their leadership. Recognition was also given to Parent Council sub-committee chairs Anna Geronimo, “passive” fundraising; Mia Acharya, Josephine Siddiqui, Gretchen Galvin, book fair; Josephine Siddiqui and Patti JablonskiDopkins, teacher treats; Bill and Jody Warner, fall family picnic; Tiffany Tomasello, ice cream social; Mindy Shine, Holimont fun day; and Aimee Neri, teacher appreciation day.
A U C T I O N 2012 Thanks were given to Auction chairs Julie Greene and Emily Wyckoff for overseeing our successful 2012 Auction, The Golden Ticket, a fun and colorful event that raised nearly $200,000 for our school.
A N N UA L F U N D Annual Fund Chairs Donna Muscarella, Aimee Neri, and Eric Saldanha ’85 were recognized for their leadership of this year’s campaign. Faculty chairs Phyllis Siracusa and Leigh Mikulka led the faculty and staff to another year of 100 percent participation.
ALUMNI COUNCIL Tricia Barrett ’92 was recognized for finishing her three-year term as Alumni Council president, in which she worked to grow our alumni outreach and events.

Annual Fund Co-Chairs Donna Muscarella, Aimee Neri and Eric Saldanha ’85
The school band and chorus are apt metaphors for the Annual Fund. Everyone has a part to play. Some parts are bigger and some smaller, but each one is important. And when everyone works together, something magnificent is created. The 2011/2012 Annual Fund campaign, orchestrated by co-chairs Donna Muscarella, Aimee Neri, and Eric Saldanha ’85, brought together a chorus of 567 donors and raised a total of $299,677 in restricted and unrestricted funds. That sum is beautiful music to our ears, because every bit of it supports important things such as student resources, teacher salaries, technology, and facilities maintenance. This year, gifts to the Annual Fund funded, among many other thing, new band instruments and an additional Lower School math teaching position. Just as a conductor keeps the band in time, the Annual Fund keeps our school running smoothly and harmoniously. And like every good performance, this campaign deserves a round of applause to everyone involved. Thank you!

RAISE THE PADDLE
FOR THE ARTS
Raise the Paddle for the Arts invited donors to support the arts at Elmwood Franklin. A total of $49,160 was raised through night-of-the-auction donations, which will help to grow and sustain programming in music, theater, and the visual arts. These funds will be used to assist with the purchase of arts supplies, equipment, and musical instruments and will support unique art experiences both in the classroom and in the community for all EFS students.

Your Support What it means, what it does, and why we need it. Every school wants a supportive and generous community. At Elmwood Franklin School, it’s not just a wish; it’s a part of who we are.
As an independent school, Elmwood Franklin was founded and is sustained through the active participation of our contributors. And their contributions come in many forms.
Elmwood Franklin relies on the charitable support of its families, its alumni, and the community-at-large to meet its annual operating expenses. Tuition alone does not cover the cost of providing an Elmwood Franklin education. But beyond its financial necessity, charitable support is at the very core of our being.
Below is an overview of just some of the opportunities available for supporting Elmwood Franklin: its mission, its students, its faculty, and its future.
Financial Support
Special Events
Annual Fund These vital, unrestricted dollars support the school’s current operating budget with funds for faculty salaries, financial assistance, classroom materials and activities, technology, library books, field trips, building maintenance, and utilities—everything it takes to run the school. The entire EFS community—alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, alumni parents, trustees and Corporation members—is asked to participate. And because the Annual Fund covers the immediate operating expenses of the school—what we need now to educate our students—we ask that donors make it their first giving priority.
Auction The EFS Auction is a 20-plus-year tradition that brings parents and others together for a fun and festive evening and also raises significant funds for the school. A team of volunteers, item donors, catalog advertisers, attendees and bidders collectively contribute more than $200,000 for the students and faculty of Elmwood Franklin School.
Capital Campaigns Occasionally the school needs to address larger issues and priorities (often, but not always, related to “brick and mortar” projects) that cannot be covered within annual budgeting. Recent examples include the library media center renovation, the theatre and Upper School renovation, and the dining room expansion. Capital gifts are restricted gifts that are made above and beyond regular annual giving in response to such special initiatives, and they enable the school to plan for and pursue long-term institutional vitality. Planned Giving Planned gifts are as special as they are varied—the options are numerous. Planned gifts include bequests, annuities, trusts, and even gifts of real estate or personal property. Such arrangements benefit Elmwood Franklin in obvious ways, and they may also benefit the donor through favorable tax consequences or a new source of income. If you have already included Elmwood Franklin in your estate plans, please let us know. We would like the opportunity to thank you personally. If you would like to learn more about the possibility of planned giving, contact your financial advisor or the Development Office.

Volunteerism Parent Council The Parent Council initiates a number of activities that allow families to become more closely involved in the life of the school and lend support to the school, financially, organizationally, and otherwise. Among other projects, the Parent Council organizes a Fall book fair each year that provides funds for the school and books for the library. Alumni Council Through events and service throughout the year, the Alumni Council makes strategic efforts to maintain communication with alumni, inform them of current school happenings, involve them in the life of the school, and garner their financial support. Special Opportunities There is no limit to the ways in which our families, alumni, and friends can support Elmwood Franklin. Providing in-kind donations of goods or services, spreading word of the school to potential enrollees, helping out in the classroom or library—the active involvement of our community is what raises us up and sets us apart.
Whatever your ways of supporting Elmwood Franklin School, we thank you. It couldn’t be done without you.
