SELLADORE "I was astonished when someone first showed that by writing cellar door as Selladore one produces an enchanting proper name.” - C.S. Lewis “Your language too has soft and beautiful words, but they are not always appreciated. What could be more musical than your word cellar-door?” - W.D. Howells “The modern small home or apartment has ... deprived today's child of ... the pleasant summer afternoon activity of sliding down cellar doors. Just what happened to the slanted cellar door in this efficient age isn't clear; although cellars have remained, nothing has disappeared more quietly from modern life than these cellar doors.” - William Chapman White “This famous linguist once said that of all the phrases in the English language, of all the endless combinations of words in all of history, that ‘cellar door’ is the most beautiful.” - Karen Pomeroy “Sell a cellar, door a cellar, sell a cellar cellar-door, door adore, adore a door, selling cellar, door a cellar, cellar cellar-door. There is damned little meaning and less sense in such a sentence, but there is, unless my tonal balance is askew, twice more rhythm and twice more lovely sound in it than in anything, equally idiotic, that Miss Gertrude ever confected.” - George Jean Nathan

INTRODUCTION Within these pages are entire worlds, constellations of meaning and purpose brought to bear upon us by the girls of Elmwood. There is a startling array of techniques and styles fraught with humour, passion and intent. Though each piece says something different they are similar in that they all say something, meaningful and forcefully. We started this journal for this express purpose, to give the girls of this school an opportunity to regain control over language, to exert agency where there might exist passivity. These authors have tamed language to meet their emotional ends and, in so doing, give you the reader an understanding that such things are possible, no matter your age or intent. We ask simply that you read these words with an open mind, an open heart and with the understanding that, should you choose to express yourself as well, we will be waiting for you with the next issue.

Sincerely, Your Editors

Untitled Anonymous The letters accumulate, from the deep well within her soul. Stacked repetitively, filling the emptiness within. Joining in incoherent jumbles until finally words and sentences appear. Amassing, like tumultuous lava, desperately searching to be free. Through her fingers they flow, gasping for air and the release it brings. They cascade like liquid gold, descending in a torrent upon the page. Coating empty voids with spellbinding, enchanting melodies.

Things That Are Strange Maggie Fyfe - i didn’t want to make the title of this ‘strange things’ even though that sounds way nicer because it sounds too much like the show ‘stranger things’ and i didn’t want people reading this to start with the expectation that it would be the same calibre as an emmy award winning netflix show… sorry it’s not… anyways please keep reading i would appreciate your validation - the way wednesday is spelled - i don’t like when people crack their knuckles… do you want your fingers to start glowing like glow sticks? - i thought taylor swift was just her stage name until i watched her documentary… it just sounds too cool to be her real name - keith urban’s hair… i am not a fan - when it’s a friday but you don’t have that nice friday feeling - what’s the opposite of irony? wrinkly? - the fact that the academy didn’t nominate greta gerwig for best director this year - the way my mom pronounces february (love you mom) - when you say “no worries if not”… but there are lots of worries if not - you can convince me to watch any movie as long timothee chalamet is in it - i never go on buzzfeed unless i’m trying to procrastinate, if i have tons of free time then i have no desire to make a frozen yogurt to find out the name of my future pet - one day i hope i’m as cool as zendaya… i know i won’t be… but i can dream - when something is type 2 fun, like in the moment it’s doesn’t feel that fun but then reminiscing about it later is really entertaining… like camping - someone hasn’t made movie yet where andy samberg, jesse eisenberg, and michael cera play brothers - why don’t vampires like garlic? actually never mind, that means more farm boy garlic bread for me so i won’t question it - pilot pete isn’t emotionally mature enough to be the bachelor this season (yes, i’m getting political here i’m sorry) - why is my computer brightness so dark? - i only like jeans with holes in them if they have holes in the knees - would you rather fight a rat sized lion or a lion sized rat?

When I Meet Them Alexis Patrascu I was standing on the hill, blindfolded, when I met them, and they hummed around in the air like little pieces of radio static. Blindfolded? Yes, blindfolded, because they said I could only see when I was not looking.

I was sitting on the mountain, blind and deaf, when I met them, and they touched my hands in the cold like little bits of sparkler fire. Deaf? Yes, deaf, because they touched me and I knew I could only hear when I was not listening.

I was teetering on the cliff’s edge, blind and deaf and numb, when I met them, and they smelled of clear night skies like little pieces of nothingness.

Numb? Yes, numb, because I sniffed the air and knew I could only touch when I was not feeling.

I was lying in the meadow, blind and deaf and numb and dumb, when I met them, and they tasted of individual grains of sugar like little pinpricks on my lips. Dumb? Yes, dumb, because they melted on my tongue and I knew I could only speak when I was not talking.

I am waiting in a hospital bed, nearly dead, when I meet them, and they finally reveal themselves to me, these strange creatures, like little clicks of the second hand on the clock. [and a screaming silence] Yes, amnesiac, because they sat beside me and they told me I could only remember when I was not forgetting.

Mask Anonymous ...so you decide to put on a mask. It hides your flaws. It hides your insecurities. It hides your fear. Your stress. Your sadness. I’m finally normal. I can smile and laugh and joke and talk. I can finally be average. I won’t stand out, I won’t, I won’t. You’ve thought this a thousand times. You’ve put on your version of a perfect face a thousand times. You’ve forgotten who you are a thousand times… and counting. Deep down you know that everyone is “weird” and there is no set definition of “normal.” I mean, we’re all just strange creatures, after all. But you bury that image, a thousand more times. Strange and deranged, I rearrange myself to change and stay in this raging cage

I don’t care. I don’t care. I don’t care (fragments of a mind adrift) Hannah Gerring That winter, a knotch was added to his mother’s list of unsuccessfull projects. In an honest extension of maternal love to an outsider, she returned empty handed, void of any affectionate reciprocation that I imagine any mother hopes to achieve. He, on the other hand, dettached from his mother’s feelings about the situation, decided that if he were to view things as if he saw right through them, this type of pain would never reach him. And so, that winter, another knotch was added to his cynical list of life’s deceits.
