Alumni Reflections on the Impact of Service with Elon Volunteers! Through EV!, I realized that service is learning. This connection between learning and service helped me understand that “the act of helping” is not the sole definition of service, and service work is a pluralistic activity exemplified through action.

With EV!, many moments were filled with intense joy and a sense of innovation and breakthrough. Some moments came with frustration, brick walls, and burnout. It was part of the cycle. Yet, there was one all-encompassing feeling that remained consistent through both ups and downs: community.

Service isn’t just about giving because it is the ‘right’ thing to do. It is about connecting with a community on a personal level, finding the source of the problem, and coming up with a solution. Providing service takes teamwork, dedication, motivation, and perseverance.
EV! truly prepared me with the skills, experiences, and values I needed to be successful. There is not a day that goes by that I do not use some part of my EV! experience in my own work and personal life. Working with EV! made me the holistic person I am , with the courage and competency needed to walk my path each day.

EV! is full of people who recognize the importance of inclusivity and diversity of thought and identity. We engage with difference head-on to even out the playing field for all.
