JUST GO WITH IT Let‘s face it. Not everything goes as planned. You miss an important deadline, your car breaks down in the most inconvenient situation or the stew you’ve made doesn‘t taste as good as your mom‘s. There are a million things which go wrong every day. What do you do about it? Nothing. You just go with it. If things didn‘t go wrong, you wouldn‘t appreciate them when they go right. When everything runs smoothly, when plans and goals are accomplished. We need to learn from our own mistakes, right? This month is ELOQUE filled with great editorials. I am happy to see the progress we are making every month, I am overwhelmed by the support and positive feedback we are getting every day. But you know, things are not always as glam as they look like. There is lots of sweat and stress, hours and hours of work, sleepless nights, changing plans, making decisions, dealing with unexpected issues. What do we do when nothing goes as we want? We just go with it. More stress, more decisions to make, a few embarrassing calls or emails, and again a little more stress and a little less sleep. But the reward in the end is priceless. artlomiej Kurela is a fashion photographer known mostly for his black and white work. He was born and raised in Krakow, Poland but moved to Chicago, USA, 16 years ago. As he said himself, nobody can pronounce his name correctly, so everybody calls him Bart. He started working with models in 2012. I
know that you started in a modelling industry and later found your passion for photography. What was the breaking point when you realized you want to be a photographer? Yes, first I wanted to be an actor. That‘s why I did a lot of theater plays for my polish school, went to John Robert Powers, and REM Studios, and took classes. Eventually I end up working in the office. Then I was like, hmmm it could be fun to be an agent! Few months later I started working for a Modeling Acting agency based out of Chicago. At the same time I took any opportunity to work on movies and tv shows as an extra - stand in and help with casting. It was a lot of fun but it didn’t feel like I actually liked being in front of camera. I was more curious about how things worked, how to have more control of the projects, and about ways how things were done. Then one time, the photographer from the agency was not able to make it, and my boss was like: “Yo, you do have your camera with you, right?” I was like “yeah..?” So he said: “Ok, take Bryan around and take pics of him.” I am like “WTF man, you are serious?” - ”Yeah, he needs new shots and you are all we got.” After that it went all quickly, I started testing with models, male and female, and started loving it more and more until I realized that I can‘t take being at the office anymore and quit. Did I realize that I wanted to be a photographer? I doubt it. I knew it was the new thing and I wanted to learn and explore.
Do you think that actually going to school and learning photography helped to form you as an artist? Of course! I mean, I had to learn how to love photos somehow. In today‘s world people buy a camera, press a button, click, then boom they put a filter and you are done. I miss the days when you put a film in, hoped not to mess it up, then develop it and pray to God you didn‘t make another mistake developing it (laugh). Then you could mess with the photos. Now everything is too easy, you can change everything, you can be terrible at taking photos. You just need to be a good graphic designer and boom, you are good to go. I did graduate with my associates but not bachelors, because I couldn‘t. I used to think it was such a tragedy and it was not up to me, but now I know everything was on the right path.
Now you have your own photo business and doing photography every day. How did you start with it? Where do you find your clients?
Honestly, I don’t do it full time. I don‘t want to. I could shoot more commercial stuff, or weddings or any other stuff, but I just can‘t shoot something I don‘t find interesting. I say no to a lot of projects, and it gets people mad. I do have a job that‘s completely not related to photography, because my next plan is to learn video and start shooting more projects in that area. You are an internationally published photographer. Do you think that being published in editorial magazines like ELOQUE helps your career, gives you more recognition? ELOQUE WHO? (big laugh) Joking! But honestly, when you said “Internationally published photographer” I was like, what are you talking about?! Then I am like, crap… she might have a point. But who cares about that? I am still learning every day! Shooting, making mistakes and learning again… That´s what‘s it all about. I noticed your wide boards on Pinterest - is it that the place where you find your inspiration for upcoming photoshoots? Hey! I don‘t use Pinterest, what are you talking about! (Laugh) Quit revealing my secrets! (Laugh) But no, I freaking love it, you can soooo easily put mood boards together, or at least an outline. And yes, I do find inspiration from other shots, but honestly, people are more of an inspiration to me. I like to work with someone that‘s different. Look, character, ... Or I just use my intuition and work with someone random I would never actually think I would work with. I don‘t like planning too much. Recently I did an editorial where stylist had an idea which I loved so much. I didn‘t read anything and just showed up at the location she wanted to work at. She was like: “Did you see the mood board? Ideas and stuff?” I was like “Yeah…. totally…” (Laugh) Not really, no, I just wanted to go with it, find the right moment, have fun and get the shots. And we did get so many amazing shots! It was totally worth it. What if the photoshoot doesn´t go as planned? Does that ever happen to you? Long ago I learned it‘s good to have a plan or an outline of what you wanna do, or at least work with a person that‘s a little bit adaptive as you are. I had shoots where everything went south - make up artist couldn’t leave the house due to crazy storm, stylist got sick with food poisoning, and model flew all the way from Florida…What you do then? You just go with it. Make it work. And honestly, we got sooo many amazing photos! I can‘t get over it.

Your black and white photography is outstanding, very unique and characteristic for you. To what instance is it a matter of the gear and post process? I used to think it‘s important. And I mean it is! But it‘s so much more fun just to do something with nothing. Don‘t get me wrong, I do have Canon 5D Mark II and IV and I love them to death. But I also use my first camera sometimes, Canon 50D, and I love working with it. Why? Because why not! Soon I‘m gonna finish the darkroom in da house so I will be using a lot more often my Mamiya C3 and probably few other old cameras I have got over the years. I am open to working with different gear. Probably just not with the Nikon! (big laugh) When you are doing commercial and clients photography, do you still have time for your personal projects? Some personal challenges? I will take a personal project over commercial any day. Some might say I have a difficult character, because I should be making more money or do something different or whatever. But I am just not willing to go a path someone else already went or do things just like someone else is doing. That‘s just not me and I hope never will be. And you know what? When you do a TFP project and you get a team like Makeup artist and hair stylist and wardrobe stylist, you know those people want to be there. Because of you. Because you can create some fun stuff or you have a vision. They are not there to make money but to create. And that‘s where the fun part begins! You asked if I want to get better -
of course I want to get better! At everything! I feel like I‘m gonna stop learning and improving when my dead body falls on the ground. Hopefully holding a camera… and wearing a Deadpool hoodie! (laugh) There are tonnes of great photographers out there. Do you ever compare yourself to others? What effect does it have on you? I know lots of beginners or intermediate photographer feel discouraged. Honestly I used to, but while ago I realized, what the hell is the point? I am just wasting time looking at someone‘s work instead of learning or creating myself? Like who the hell cares what he or she is doing? Good for them!! I do appreciate people‘s work and OMG I love putting hearts and smiley faces under other photographers work. But compete? Compare? Why? They haven‘t walked a day in my shoes, they haven‘t went through the struggles I did. They never had to deal with things I had to. And I have never been in their shoes. I don‘t know what they are doing or what they had to do to get where they are. I don‘t know what pains they experienced, what mistakes they made, what they had to sacrifice… How can anybody know? My last question: What is your secret to success? Ask me in ten years! (laugh).
What gear do you use? Canon Strobes or natural light? Both, but I love natural light Favorite lens? 24-70mm Cat or dog? Cat! Nature or the city? Both Big team or one to one with the model? Necessary team - Mua, Hair, Stylist. No need for assistants or anyone that is not needed Sala(d) or a burger? Vegetarian burrito or Sushi Summer or the winter? Both Favourite photographer? are delicate creatures, living for the sunlight that both nourishes and depletes them. The sun that feeds also unlocks their precious oil, casting it into the light breeze as it kisses their petals, into the pastel fields. It’s the scent that reminds me of my mother, the soft, powdery scent of her Sunday best. It’s the sweet pink juice of my Grandmother’s turquoise lidded crystal-esque bottle, that I was somewhat obsessed with. It is the floral envelope of ladies face powders and Turkish Delights. Each rose has its own unique scent, and like a woman, must be handled with care before it allows you it’s hidden depths. It is a fragrant chameleon, a deliciously endless veil of warmth and comfort, the seductive siren call of a Jezebel. Surprising as the cool morning freshness, as inviting as dew drops on the petticoats of grass blades. What matters is not what something is named, but how it makes you feel. Surrender yourself, and let it carry you on its journey, evoking memories long since buried. Let it channel your emotions and feed your romance. Let it stir your imagination and harness your inner force to break forth your identity. Never underestimate the powerful femininity of this fragile flower, the power to bring you joy or hold you in grief. Louisa Latham model

I
personally have always felt very connected to nature, and I have found a lot of inspiration within the outdoors. When Meghan came to me with this idea I just had to be apart of creating it because it brought nature into the studio to create something amazing. The choice of flowers, and makeup inspiration was inspired by the seasons.
