SOMETHING MORE

I love the first touch of every new issue we publish. I am always overly excited for the day when the big parcel from the printing company arrives and I got to see our latest issue in material form. I can´t even describe how I feel when I flip through pages, see all the beautiful photos and all the work we have put into making this happen. It is like a little miracle. Something which was just a digital file is now in my hands, feels great and smells amazing. This is why I do it. I used to work for one magazine, a couple of years back, as a managing editor. I have been always among the first few people to hold every new issue in the hands. Needless to say, I was always running to the newsstand down the street to just look at the magazine sitting there between all the others, waiting for people to buy their own copy. It felt good. It felt real. Like I am actually part of something amazing. One year later, when the owner decided to stop printing and go solely online, I felt devastated. It was no longer exclusive. It was no longer something exciting. Suddenly it was just another magazine you can read online, among twelve thousand others. Just another shared link you saw on your Facebook wall. Shortly after that, I quit the job. Someone said it somewhere - „Being published means being printed.“ I am really not sure whose words was that maybe I overheard it in some meaningless movie or read it in some random book. Either way, I agree with the quote. Perhaps I am old school, but I believe that print is not dead. Magazines and books are still a considerable part of our lives. I love new technology and how easy you can access everything online, but the added value of the printed version is just indescribable. Reading my lines and seeing my pictures in a printed magazine, is for me worth more than one hundred online articles and my photographs all over the internet. I am happy to see that books, magazines and even old film cameras are coming back to fashion. Fingers crossed they are going to stay with us forever. This is was we have missed something more than just digital files. We are doing our best every month to bring you high-quality print version of ELOQUE. That always has been and always will be the main goal for our team. This is the value we offer, stunning printed magazine full of your photographs which deserve to be shown off in the best way possible. If you are reading these lines from your own printed copy, I want to say THANK YOU for your support and for appreciating the good old-fashioned style. I hope you will enjoy reading this issue. PS: don´t forget to smell the pages!

It is

easy to overlook the real person behind the stunning and glam appearance. We assume she has everything, sleep in the most comfortable bed, and eat from a golden plate. If you take a time to get to know her, she is a girl who has to grow up fast and like the rest of us, riddled with emotions and life problems. She is exhausted trying to keep up with the life demand and deals with everything the best that she can. We think it doesn’t make her less beautiful, it only makes her real and human.

yubi

LEE

IS 25 years old photographer originating from Seoul, South Korea, living in Oklahoma, United States. She’s currently staying in London, United Kingdom to study Masters in London College of Fashion.

Her images are not necessarily vibrant or strong, but they have great depth. She tents to put a strong message underneath the surface. Yubi´s work in many ways reminds me of paintings - subtle, artsy, with multiple meanings, uncovering the depth inside you, you didn´t even know you had. Photographs you can look at for hours and you will be still fascinated by it.

Yubi tends to work closely with her models – which are usually random people, not the „perfect“ girls from modeling agencies. She believes that ordinary people can be beautiful inside out and it is worth to capture them. The subject, female model – her story, her individuality, her relationship with Yubi, that´s all isnpiring the photographer to create an amazing art. What else? „These days, since I am in London, gallery tours have been inspiring me a lot. Encountering an art piece or painting I think it is the strongest inspiration that an artist cannot deny at all.“

As is clear from her photographs same as from her editorial „Modern Modesty“ (page 77-86), natural element is an inseparable part of her creative art. Weather, greens and flowers have the biggest impact. „I think flowers with different shapes, and odor represents the individual appearance and inner odor that one person can have. Everyone is different but different in amazing ways.“ In Yubi´s work, you can find two main lines. IVIDUALITY AND MODESTY.

INDIVIDUALITY

“In these modern times where females are bombarded with the trends and what people think about them, I think young females are forgetting what their unique beauty is in terms of both outside and inside. I believe humans are created to look different in body shapes, have various eye colours and interesting personalities. I struggled with low self-esteem issues myself while growing up, and I know that the joy and confidence of finding my own individuality cannot be EVER compared with fashion trends or portraits of women in social media.”

PROFILE MODESTY “Modesty has become a big component in my works. I can say that the virtue of modesty was my own tool to find my own individuality. Modesty is not just about appearance, but the lifestyle of women that many are unaware of - everybody are so busy showing oneself in the streets and social media. Modesty embraces lifestyle as a whole and brings one to a humble place. It helps you realize that you are existing here and that is merely beautiful enough. No more. You don´t have to try to satisfy others, or even, yourself.” YUBI IS VERY DOWN TO EARTH AND MODEST PERSON HERSELF – SHE IS LOOKING FOR THE SAME VALUE IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS AS IN THE PAINTINGS. HER UNIQUE STYLE AND THOUGHTFUL PROJECTS WILL GIVE YOU EXACTLY THAT – THE BEAUTY FOR THE SOUL AND HEART. See her exclusive editorial for ELOQUE magazine – Modern Modesty on pages 77-86.

The inspiration for our editorial ‘Chantelle’ was a ‘tribal queen’ theme. The team’s collective vision, as initially envisaged by our creative director and I, was to create empowering images of a strong, confident, modern ‘tribal queen. So, we scouted a location with different types of vegetation and structures, to form the lush backdrop for our theme. Our editorial stylist had a lot of fun styling this shoot, sourcing colourful clothing of various prints, designs and textures. She paired these with layered statement jewellery pieces, to create the tribal and bohemian looks. Our hair and make-up artist created the bold hairstyles, using braids and volume. She painted various make-up looks, including tribal designs on the face and hands (using body jewel tattoos), to bring the ‘tribal queen’ theme together. Our ‘Chantelle’ is a bold wanderer, with the soul of a warrior and the elegance of a queen.

THE CONCEPT FOR “OLD HOLLYWOOD” CAME FROM THE IDEA OF DOING A “DAY IN THE LIFE” OF AN OLD HOLLYWOOD ACTRESS AS SHE GETS READY FOR A PHOTOSHOOT. I’VE ALWAYS BEEN INSPIRED BY THE CLASSIC, HOLLYWOOD MOVIE STAR GLAMOUR OF THE MAKEUP/HAIR AND WARDROBE, AND SO I WANTED TO DO AN HOMAGE TO THAT PERIOD, BUT INFUSED WITHIN A MORE CONTEMPORARY SETTING. 74

This

is is an editorial to encourage and display the beauty of the virtue‚ modesty‘ in women. Modesty is a virtue that has been forgotten in this modern days and in fact it is beyond garment, it is a lifestyle and characteristics that the female may have. It is a lifestyle of humility, solitary, and faithful, but confident. Apples signify the „apples of the eye“ that women tends to thirst for (fame, appearance, social media, money etc.), which a modest woman knows what her one choice is and gives faith. Modesty in women should not be a restriction of veiling certain parts of body, but a freedom and a confidence to accept and embrace one‘s individuality of body and heart.

Model Ike Ortiz

Emotional Embraced

Ike Ortiz is a musician. He reached out to me, asking me to do a photoshoot for his upcoming album. He told me he had never done a photoshoot before and felt a little insecure because of that but he wanted to shoot with me anyway. He believes in what I do and in the vision I have for each shoot. When we met and started shooting I told him to just focus on himself. We listened to the music he loves and later we started to listen to his own music, which is very emotional and filled with depth. He felt more comfortable and was able to express himself with movements and feelings to his own R&B/Soul music. Since the pictures are meant to be on the cover of his new album, my main goal was to capture his as pure as he is the true Ike Ortiz in his element. Here, you can find lots of emotional facial expressions – that leads me to the name of the editorial – Emotional Embraced. You should have seen Ike as soon as he felt comfortable, how his face glowed up and how he really embraced every single emotion he had while vibing to the tunes that he loves. Go and listen to his music on Soundcloud, it is an amazing experience. 102
